Fast foodies are getting fed up with price hikes at the drive-thru

Look no further than the fast-food drive-thru for evidence of inflation fatigue.

Food companies have been passing along higher labor and ingredient costs to consumers long after inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022. Diners are getting fed up, eating less fast food and griping on social media that their go-to cheap meals aren’t so cheap anymore.

Sales show it. McDonald’s reported underwhelming results in the fourth quarter, and Yum Brands showed weaker-than-expected growth in its top brands , which include KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

Fast-food executives are taking note. McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski told analysts Monday that consumers are becoming more discriminating with their dollars, and he promised the company would focus more on affordability this year.

Kempczinski noted that consumers earning $45,000 or less annually were favoring comparatively cheaper groceries over Mickey D’s, opting to cook their own meals more often.

“Eating at home has become more affordable,” he said. “The battleground is certainly with that low-income consumer.”

Some common grocery items have been falling in price . In the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index, the food at home category rose only 1.3% between December 2022 and December 2023, but food away from home rose 5.2%.

Long known for its Dollar Menu, McDonald’s was recently pilloried online for a Connecticut restaurant’s $18 Big Mac combo meals and $7 Egg McMuffin.

McDonald’s told NBC News that pricing is up to franchisees and can vary by location but that the company strives to strike a balance for value.

In recent years, many fast-food companies have expanded offerings and tweaked their restaurants to try to attract as many customers as possible across income levels. McDonald’s recently upgraded its famous burgers and opened a new concept called CosMc’s , all while leaning into nostalgia.

But inflation-scarred diners may care more about price, said Laura Murphy, managing director of Bolt PR who specializes in food and beverage marketing.

“People are really telling fast food QSR [quick-service restaurant] industry leaders, ‘This is what we’re looking for, this is what we want: We want efficiency. We want affordability.’”

Meanwhile, Taco Bell is leaning in on its value menu, promoting 10 items for $3 or less. The company told NBC News it “remains dedicated to offering our fans delicious food at affordable prices.”

This isn’t the first time in recent years that consumers have balked at menu price hikes, or taken to social media to gripe about them .

Yum CEO David Gibbs told Yahoo Finance last year that the company was planning more modest price increases than the ones it implemented in 2022. Amid the latest quarter’s disappointing results, Yum announced plans to juice sales at KFC by launching a smashed potato bowl and the chicken chain’s first loyalty program.

Some major food and beverage brands operating in the Middle East — including McDonald’s, Starbucks and Yum — have said conflict in the region and related boycotts have also dented business. Burger King’s parent company warned in November that the turmoil there threatened to pile on top of other global pressures, from the war in Ukraine to Covid-19, that have already driven up costs over the last few years.

That could potentially “have an adverse impact on our business and results of operations if we and our franchisees are not able to adjust prices sufficiently ... without negatively impacting consumer demand,” the company told investors.

Bucking the trend, Chipotle’s sales rose 8.4% in the fourth quarter and foot traffic improved, too, after a 3% menu price hike back in October. The company credited the return of carne asada with helping drive the growth.

With prices for almost everything higher today than three years ago, even though inflation has slowed sharply , Murphy said what matters most in today’s fast-food industry are cost and convenience.

“Let’s go back to really making sure that we’re providing simple food in an affordable way that’s efficient, quick, and it gives people really the basics of what they’re looking for,” she said.

Diners are getting annoyed at how expensive fast food has become — and the likes of McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Shake Shack seem to be listening

Chains such as McDonald's, Shake Shack, and Taco Bell have said they're planning only small price increases in 2024 as inflation cools.

Chains across the US put prices up drastically during the pandemic because of factors including higher wages, more expensive food and packaging costs, and supply-chain disruptions.

From January 2021 to January 2022, prices at limited-service restaurants went up 8%, according to unadjusted data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics . The next year, they increased 6.7%.

But in the last year, prices at limited-service restaurants rose just 5.8%, according to BLS data .

Inflation may be cooling, but the series of recent price hikes is still putting a sour taste in some customers' mouths.

Martin Jennings, a 51-year-old truck driver from Florida, told Business Insider his family was being deterred by higher prices at fast-food chains.

"Most of the time, it's just so expensive that we try to avoid it," he said. "It's gotten kind of outrageous, and so we've really scaled back."

Ben Heyworth, an account executive from Orlando, told BI he rarely ate at home but had pivoted from dining in at fast-food chains such as Subway, Burger King, and McDonald's in favor of fast-casual restaurants that were designed for sit-down meals. He said the food, service, and atmosphere were all better, and they generally charged a similar price.

Shake Shack executives told investors on Thursday the company expected to put in-store prices up by about 2.5% in 2024. Pricing action would be more in line with what the chain did before the pandemic, executives said.

Wendy's executives said on Thursday that the chain planned to put prices up in the low-single digits throughout 2024, with a small increase planned for the middle of the year. The company said it had put prices up by about 4.5% in 2023 but that customers didn't place smaller orders as a result.

Both McDonald's and Taco Bell said last week that customers should expect less dramatic price hikes this year. McDonald's put US prices up by about 10% in 2022 and again in 2023, and its chief financial officer, Ian Borden, said diners were now more cautious of price increases.

Customers are looking for app deals and choosing value menus

Customers are looking for ways to get cheaper meals at fast-food chains. Jennings said his family had apps for "pretty much every" fast-food restaurant out there to find deals. They'd choose to order "whatever's the cheapest," he said.

David Gibbs, the CEO of Taco Bell's parent company, Yum Brands, said sales of the chain's revamped $3-and-under value menu had been stronger than expected.

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said he expected low-income diners to be more attracted to the low-price items on its menu, such as those included in its D123 platform, which prices some items at $1, $2, and $3, rather than multi-buy promotions.

In their recent batch of earnings calls, fast-food executives generally said they were optimistic for the year ahead as inflation cools and employment levels are high.

"The consumer should start to see net disposable income coming up slightly, feel a little bit richer," and want to treat themselves by visiting restaurants more often, Wendy's CFO, Gunther Plosch, told investors.

Prices in California are set to go up, though

While the picture in most of America should improve for fast-food customers, diners in California should expect to face bigger price increases in 2024. Minimum wages for California fast-food workers are set to increase to $20 an hour in April, and their employers are planning to hike menu prices to offset this.

Chipotle said it was eyeing a price increase in the mid-single digits, depending on consumer sentiment and actions taken by other fast-food chains.

People who order for delivery generally face higher menu prices, too. Shake Shack's CFO, Katie Fogertey, said the chain had recently increased the premium charged to customers who placed orders digitally.

Fast-food chains are finding other ways to get diners to pay more, such as rolling out more digital order kiosks , which typically push diners to place bigger orders and spend more on customizations.

Will Food Prices Stop Rising Quickly? Many Companies Say Yes.

Food companies are talking about smaller price increases this year, good news for grocery shoppers, restaurant diners and the White House.

Few prices are as visible to Americans as the ones they encounter at the grocery store or drive-through window, which is why two years of rapid food inflation have been a major drag for U.S. households and the Biden administration.

Shoppers have only slowly regained confidence in the state of the economy as they pay more to fill up their carts, and President Biden has made a habit of shaming food companies — even filming a Super Bowl Sunday video criticizing snack producers for their “rip off” prices.

But now, the trend in grocery and restaurant inflation appears to be on the cusp of changing.

After months of rapid increase, the cost of food at home climbed at a notably slower clip in January. And from packaged food providers to restaurant chains, companies across the food business are reporting that they are no longer raising prices as steeply. In some cases that’s because consumers are finally pushing back against price increases after years of spending through them. In others, it’s because the prices that companies pay for inputs like packaging and labor are no longer rising as sharply.

Even if food inflation cools, it does not mean that your grocery bill or restaurant check will get smaller: It just means it will stop climbing so quickly. Most companies are planning smaller price increases rather than outright price cuts. Still, when it comes to the question of whether rapid jumps in grocery and restaurant prices are behind us, what executives are telling investors offer some reason for hope.

Some, but not all, consumers are saying no.

Executives have found in recent months that they can raise prices only so high before consumers cut back.

The soda and snack maker PepsiCo had raised prices by double-digit percentages for seven straight quarters, and while that streak ended at the close of 2023, PepsiCo still raised prices by 9 percent in the final months of the year.

But all those price jumps on sodas and chips have started to bite. The company recently posted a surprise drop in sales .

Ramon Laguarta, PepsiCo’s chief executive, said on a recent earnings call that the company would be less likely to raise prices beyond “normal pricing levels” — around 2 to 3 percent per year. The firm is seeing milder cost increases on ingredients and is focusing more on keeping sales up, he explained.

James Quincey, the chief executive of Coca-Cola, explained on a recent earnings call that the company had seen a stark divide among U.S. customers: Some are under financial stress and are facing a “real spending power squeeze,” while others “still have plenty of money, plenty of purchasing power” to spend on lactose-free milk and protein shakes.

Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, reported strong U.S. sales in the fourth quarter, in part as more higher-income households turned to the value chain for grocery shopping.

“We continue to see a customer that’s resilient, but looking for value,” Doug McMillon, chief executive of Walmart, said during an earnings call on Tuesday. He noted that prices for food and consumable products were still “slightly” higher than a year ago.

“Prices are lower than a year ago in places like eggs, apples and deli snacks, but higher in other places, like asparagus and blackberries,” he said.

Companies are seeing a return to normal.

Some companies seem to be following the rest of the economy back to more moderate price changes. Overall inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, peaked at 9.1 percent in summer 2022 but slowed to just 3.1 percent at the start of this year, while food commodity costs like beef , grains and some kinds of dairy have been easing.

“Our pricing broadly is coming down in line with kind of inflation getting back to, what I’ll call more normal levels,” Ian Borden, chief financial officer at McDonald’s, said on a call with investors. (McDonald’s executives also noted that they were seeing some lower-income customers spend less per visit.)

Shake Shack, the burger and ice cream chain, is planning on raising prices by 2.5 percent this year — a return to the sort of increases that were normal before the pandemic, Katie Fogertey, the company’s chief financial officer, said on a recent earnings call .

But she noted that some stores would need to raise prices by more than that to offset increasing costs. In particular, that is true in markets where workers are hard to find and bigger price increases are needed to “offset wage inflationary pressures,” she said.

Such comments underline an important point. Many companies have taken advantage of inflation to pad profits, but for the past several years, some portion of grocery and restaurant price increases has been aimed at covering higher costs. Wages have been rising rapidly in the hospitality and retail sectors, and key ingredients had been expensive amid supply chain problems, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and bouts of avian flu.

Companies typically at least try to raise prices when the cost of doing business climbs to avoid losing profits. But as wage and input cost pressures begin to fade, companies can stop aggressively lifting prices without risking a hit to their bottom line.

Some firms are turning to technology.

Of course, there is a way to cover higher costs without raising prices: Companies can improve their productivity, so that each worker can stock more shelves, flip more burgers or wait more tables. That is, partly, what Wendy’s is doing.

The fast food chain is rolling out digital menus, hoping they enable “immediate benefits to order accuracy, improve crew experience” and allow for sales growth, Kirk Tanner, the company’s chief executive, said on a recent earnings call .

Wendy’s also plans to try out “dynamic pricing,” he said, using technology to change prices to meet consumer demand. Another company executive suggested that the company expected “low single digit prices” this year.

This all adds up to cooler food inflation.

Taken together, the signs suggest that grocery and restaurant inflation is likely to prove more moderate in 2024 than it was in the previous three years .

Many food-related input costs are either coming down or jumping less aggressively. Wage gains remain elevated in food service, but they are cooling back toward normal. And consumers are beginning to push back on the kind of big price increases that firms were using to pad their profit margins.

Michael Swanson, chief agricultural economist at Wells Fargo, expects grocery inflation to cool to 0.5 percent this year — “much slower than it’s been” — although restaurant inflation could remain stronger as people continue to open their wallets to eat out.

Even there, he said, “it’s going to trend down.”

Fast-food restaurants aren't immune from inflation. Customers have noticed rising prices for the past two years and buying lunch for less than $10, or $20 if you go to Five Guys, has become more challenging.

There is a tool, however, that can reduce the cost of your food. Nearly every fast-food restaurant in northwestern Pennsylvania has an app that you can download onto your smartphone.

Many of the these apps have digital specials, deals that are only available online, and rewards programs that enable customers to buy food with points earned through previous purchases.

But not all apps are the same. Let's take a look at five of the most popular ones:

McDonald's has taken some heat on social media for its rising prices, though the recent story of a Big Mac meal costing $18 was shown to be only at one particular Connecticut location.

Most McDonald's value meals cost between $7 and $11 at the Erie restaurants, and even less if you download the McDonald's app.

On my most recent visit, I used a deal to buy a Big Mac meal for $6. It saved me $2.89 off the regular price.

I'm embarrassed to admit this is one of my most used food apps, but the idea of getting discounted McDonald's food is too tasty to deny.

You can order and pay for McDonald's through the app, but you can also scan the deals at the counter or kiosk when you arrive. However, some deals are mobile order and pay only.

Be aware that you can only use one discount every 15 minutes, and sometimes the app tells you that you have used a discount when you haven't. In those cases, I reboot my smartphone to fix the glitch.

In addition to the deals, you also collect points on the app, which you can use to purchase certain foods like Big Macs, French fries or large frappes.

Jimmy John's

One of the food apps I downloaded for this column is from Jimmy John's, a sub shop with two Erie locations.

The app itself is simple and easy to navigate, but it does require you to order and pay online to earn its "Freaky Fast Rewards."

The rewards, at least the initial one, is fast. I can earn a free 8-inch sub after just one online order.

In addition to earning free food with follow-up orders, you can unlock more rewards through the app's Achievement Badges. They may require you to buy a certain food, such as a brownie, within a designated period of time.

I feel this app is beneficial if you are willing to enter a method of payment. I'm not a fan of giving these apps my credit card information, so I might upload a gift card.

When Taco Bell arrived in Erie more than 35 years ago, it was known as a cheap place to eat. Tacos cost 39 cents each, and your lunch usually cost less than $4.

I don't expect fast-food restaurants to maintain the same prices they had in 1989, but I did experience some sticker shock when I walked into a Taco Bell a few years ago for the first time in decades.

The Taco Bell app does feature deals, often on a rotating basis, that aren't available when you order in person. So, I downloaded the app and ordered online.

The good news is that my family's order was ready and waiting for me when I arrived. The bad news is that they didn't include the 13 taco sauce packets we ordered, and switched sweet iced tea for unsweetened iced tea.

Also, the app wouldn't allow me to pay part of the bill with a gift card that I had uploaded. Thankfully the bill was about $10 less than if we had ordered in person.

The Subway app is another one I have used for years, though I don't order online. The main benefit is a rewards program that offers $2 discounts every time you spend $40 online or in person.

I would check out the deals offered on the app, but they weren't as good as Subway's paper coupons that come in the mail. But since the most recent coupons expired earlier this month, I recently used the app to order lunch and chose a 10% off deal.

My sub was waiting for me when I arrived, and it was made exactly how I ordered it. I had uploaded a gift card, so I didn't need to give them my credit card information.

Bottom line: It's a fine app but the paper coupons offer a better deal.

Moe's is an app, like McDonald's, that offers plenty of rewards even if you don't order online.

The restaurant's well-known Moe's Monday burrito deal is now only available through the app, though you can scan it at the register. I also uploaded my AARP card, so I always have a 10% discount if there aren't better deals available.

Its rewards program offers a $10 discount for every $100 you spend, which just about covers the cost of a meal (if you drink water).

Be aware that if you want to redeem a deal or discount in person, don't select it until you approach the register. They are only good for 10 minutes.
