Food is an essential part of our lives. We all need food to survive as it provides us with energy and nutrients for healthy growth and development. Eating a well-balanced diet can also help us stay fit and strong.
There are many different types of foods that we can choose from when choosing what to eat. Fruits and vegetables are great for providing vitamins, minerals, and fiber to our diets. Grains such as rice, oats, and wheat provide carbohydrates which give us energy. Protein-rich foods like eggs, beans, fish, and meat help with growth and repair of tissues in the body. Dairy products contain calcium which is needed for strong bones.

Eating a diverse selection of foods also provides us with different flavors and textures, which can make eating more enjoyable.

ESL Cooking Reading Comprehension Passage
We all need to eat to keep fit and healthy. Young children cannot grow tall and strong unless they eat a well-balanced diet. This means a selection of foods that provide protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and mineral elements.
Some foods can be digested raw but other foods are heated and cooked to make digestion faster. Salad leaves, cucumber, tomatoes, vegetables such as carrots, and fruit do not need cooking. However apples are an example of fruit that can be eaten raw and also cooked. Stewed apples, apples baked in the oven and apples in pies and topped with crumble are ways of eating the fruit. When food is cooked, it is heated.
Before people had electricity and gas, they cooked on wood and charcoal fires. A fairly recent addition to cooking is the microwave. This speeds up the cooking time. Fan ovens are also more efficient. Barbecue cooking outside in the garden on a warm day in summer, is very popular. In the kitchen, utensils are used to contain the food, and they vary from open pans to pans with lids, frying pans, steamers, pressure cookers and woks.
Before supermarkets sold ready cooked meals that just require re-heating, it was the tradition that men left the women in the home to prepare and cook food. Now both men and women share the tasks in well-designed kitchens. In restaurants, the chef, a few years ago, was nearly always male. Today however, there are as many female chefs as men.
There has been a great revival in the way food is cooked, mainly in part due to seeing a lot of cooking programmes on television. These are often presented as competitions like Master Chef and the Great British bake-off. Also people travel more to foreign countries and return home with exotic and interesting recipes. The availability of ingredients in the supermarkets also encourages experimentation.
The kitchen is now the 'hub' of the house. The family, friends and visitors when waiting for a meal to be prepared all gather in the kitchen and help to prepare the dishes or watch others doing the cooking. The utensils available to aid the food preparation are plentiful. Different types of knives for example. Aprons and oven gloves help to protect us from spills and heat when taking hot dishes from the oven.
Some people love cooking, planning the meal, assembling the ingredients and then preparing the food. Others however prefer to open a tin of food and hot up the contents.

Can you cook.
Read the article about Tom and do the exercises to practise and improve your reading skills.
Do the preparation exercise first. Then do the other exercises.
This teenager can – and his mum's very happy with him.
Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sport.
But between 5.30 and 6.30 from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: mum, dad, younger brother Joe and older sister Emma.
I think it's important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them in today's world.
First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes in my cookery books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good! – Tom's mum
I love cooking and I think I'm really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don't know why, it isn't difficult and it's great fun! – Tom
In the past, Tom didn't help out at home and his mum wasn't very happy with him. Today, things are different and she is very happy.

Food Quiz question 14
Food quiz question #14 ... 2017 to 2022.
Agreed. The question is worded poorly, and the file has not been updated. It is now 2022, and I'm not going to hold my breath for an update as promised in December of 2017. I'm hoping for a Christmas miracle in 2022; please kindly update this?
Thanks for your comment - the worksheet has now been updated with a differently worded question 14 - Hope you and your students enjoy the lesson!
Hot & Spicy: any difference?
Private classes, amazing lesson.
I'm teaching English in Northern Spain at the moment (The Basque Country). I used this lesson with a lot of my classes last week (pre-int to upper-int) and they loved it. It gave them a really opportunity to discuss their local cuisines with me as well as discover how multi-cultural the UK actually is. I only managed to get through pages 1-4 of the worksheet in an hour and an half lesson but that's great because I can do a part two this week. Thank you very much for the lesson plan and nice one!
(P.S. they got a bit confused with the "e.g. pies" on the food description, they read it as egg pie. Maybe a e.g. might be better - sorry for being such a nit-picker)
Not sure if I'm missing something, but there seems to be a section missing - the activities that correspond with the restaurant reviews. Great looking lesson plan though and am planning to give it a go tomorrow.
Looking into it
You're right, it seems that the worksheets are slightly mis-numbered and that the one with the questions about the reviews is missing. We are looking into it!
That's great, thanks!
Present and correct
All worksheets should now be present and correct!
