strategic planning quotes

If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere

If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.

strategic planning quotes

Strategic planning is the continuous process of making present entrepreneurial (risk-taking) decisions systematically and with the greatest knowledge of their futurity; organizing systematically the efforts needed to carry out these decisions; and measuring the results of these decisions against the expectations through organized, systematic feedback.

We have a strategic plan. It's called 'doing things'.

A goal without a plan is just a wish.

If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.

Strategic planning for the future is the most hopeful indication of our increasing social intelligence.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

The sole purpose of strategic planning is to enable the company to gain, as effectively as possible, a sustainable edge over its competitors.

If you don't know where you're going any road will do

Failure is the most effective technique to optimize strategic planning, implementation and processes.

A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.

If you don t know where you are, a map won't help.

In every company which I have done strategic planning, the number-one value people choose is always integrity. The second values may be quality of products and services, caring about people, excellent customer service, profitability , innovation, entrepreneurship, and others. But integrity always comes first.

Cherish your visions and your dreams, as they are the children of your soul; the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.

It's hard to get lost if you don't know where you're going.

Strategic planning is not strategic thinking. Indeed, strategic planning often spoils strategic thinking, causing managers to confuse real vision with the manipulation of numbers.

If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle

The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet.

If you don't know where you are currently standing, you're dead.

What business strategy is all about-what distinguishes it from all other kinds of business planning-is, in a word, competitive advantage. Without competitors there would be no need for strategy, for the sole purpose of strategic planning is to enable the company to gain, as efficiently as possible, a sustainable edge over its competitors.

Many organizations help businesses to stay on top of what's changing or likely to change. It's important for executives and managers who focus on a company's health coverage to stay up-to-speed on what's happening, and it's important for those in the C-suite to understand the changes to factor these new variables into their strategic planning calculus.

Most of the CEO's who fail think they will find the solution to their problems in Finance, Marketing, Strategic Planning, etc., but they don't look for the solution to their problems inside themselves.

Strategy Quotes – 130 Powerful Quotes About Strategy (With Explanations)

Strategy is the process of planning and executing a course of action to achieve the desired objective. A strategy must be well thought out, detailed, and tailored to the specific circumstances of the situation to be successful. A sound strategy can help an organization achieve its goals and objectives, while a poorly conceived or executed strategy can lead to disaster.

One of the most important aspects of any successful strategy is Implementation. With proper implementation, even the best plans will stay intact. Effective implementation requires detailed knowledge, skill, and experience – something that can often be hard to come by.

A well-executed strategy should also be flexible and responsive to environmental changes. It should be able to adapt as new information becomes available or circumstances change. Each method will work in some cases; instead, a successful strategy will combine different elements to create an effective overall plan.

This is where quotes come in handy. They provide powerful advice on how to create and implement effective strategies.  This article offers powerful quotes to help you develop a sound system for your business.

Best 40 Quotes About Strategy With Explanations

“a vision without a strategy remains an illusion.” lee bolman.

Vision is essential to any successful organization. Without a clear vision, an organization can quickly become disoriented and drift away from its original purpose. The vision is not only what an organization stands for but also the direction in which it plans to move. With a well-defined strategy, an idea will remain just that – a vision.

Lee Bolman, author of “Visioneering,” defines Visioneering as developing a compelling and inspiring vision based on careful analysis and consideration of its current and future needs. It involves understanding the customer and competitor landscape, Crafting a message that inspires people to act, and Mobilizing resources to make the vision a reality.

Effective visioning requires a thorough analysis of the organization’s context and the environment – what’s happening around it, what they did before, and where people think things are heading.

2. “The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that’s changing quickly, the only strategy guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.” Mark Zuckerberg

The world is changing quickly, which can be both good and bad. On the one hand, we’re seeing new technologies and discoveries arising all the time, which means that our world is becoming more and more complex. On the other hand, this rapid change means that things can also become quickly out of control – which is why taking risks is vital to ensure success in today’s economy.

If you don’t take any risks, you’re guaranteed to fail. In today’s competitive world, if they don’t try something new – including businesses and individuals. You may be disadvantaged in the long run if you’re unwilling to take risks to grow your business or achieve your goals.

3. “Strategy is figuring out what not to do.” ― Steve Jobs

The real secret to success is figuring out what not to do. That may seem obvious, but it’s incredible how many people spend their time and energy trying to figure out what they should be doing instead of simply doing what works.

Some of the most successful people in the world have figured out one thing. They realized that the key to their success was not focusing on what they should do but on what not to do. For example, Steve Jobs was a master at figuring out what not to do. He knew that he didn’t need an elaborate marketing campaign or flashy product releases; he simply needed good products that people wanted. And he didn’t focus on profit margins – he focused on creating quality products that would stand the test of time.

4. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” — Warren Buffett

Strategy is all about making the most of your opportunities. In this quote, the author states that strategy involves taking advantage of what someone did in the past. It applies to many aspects of life, including business. When it comes to business, it is essential to remember that success is often due to the efforts of others. For example, to succeed in your field, you should focus on what others are doing and try to replicate their strategies. Sometimes it takes a long time for something to take root, but you can achieve great things with patience and effort.

5. “The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do.” Michael Porter

Many business professionals believe that the key to success is to do what’s called “doing the right thing.” This philosophy believes businesses can achieve their goals by following best practices and adhering to predetermined rules. While this may be true in some cases, it only sometimes provides businesses with the best results. Doing what’s known as “doing the right thing” can lead to failure.

Michael Porter is a business professor who has written extensively on strategy. He has found two main types of failures: those that occur because businesses don’t take action and those that occur because businesses take the wrong action. Businesses face several challenges when taking action, including making informed decisions, overcoming resistance from employees and customers, and anticipating potential obstacles.

6. “Strategy is about making choices, trade-offs; it’s about deliberately choosing to be different.”— Michael Porter

Strategy is about making choices and trade-offs. It’s about deliberately choosing to be different. Michael Porter defines strategy as “creating a course of action that leads to desired results.” To create a successful strategy, you need to identify your business’s unique strengths and weaknesses, figure out what the market wants and needs, and then create a plan that capitalizes on these strengths while minimizing your weaknesses.

There are many different strategies, but all boil down to two key elements: defining goals and planning actions to achieve them. To form a successful strategy, you need clear objectives and know what steps will get you there. You also need to understand the competition and how best to compete against them. Finally, it would help if you could adapt your plan as new information arises.

7. “Sound strategy starts with having the right goal.”— Michael Porter

Sound strategy starts with having the right goal. Defining your business goals and creating a sound strategy is essential. Without a specific objective, your efforts will be scattered and ineffective. Michael Porter defines five essential elements of sound strategy: focus, direction, focus areas, plans, and resources.

If you can stick to these basics, you’ll be on your way to creating a successful plan. First, define your company’s overall mission and goals. Then develop a strategy that will help you reach those objectives. Ensure your chosen strategies align with your company’s culture and values. Finally, allocate the necessary resources to carry out your plan and ensure everyone is on board.

8. “Strategy is about setting yourself apart from the competition. It’s not a matter of being better at what you do – it’s a matter of being different at what you do.”— Michael Porter

Michael Porter famously defined strategy as making choices, trade-offs, and taking actions that result in different outcomes. This definition underscores the essential nature of strategy: it is all about deliberate decision-making.

To be effective at strategy, you need to think critically and make choices that will lead to positive results. To do this, you must understand your goals and how best to achieve them. You also need to be willing to make sacrifices – sometimes, things will not go as planned, and you may have to give up some short-term gains to achieve long-term objectives.

All of this requires a good deal of hard work and discipline. But if you put in the effort, it can lead to great personal and professional success.

9. “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said this, which couldn’t be more accurate. A goal without a plan is like trying to reach the moon with a teaspoon; it’s impossible without proper planning. Without a PLAN, your goal is an empty vessel waiting to overflow with doubt and fear.

If you want to achieve something great, you need to have measurable and time-bound goals — goals give you something to aim for and momentum when things get tough. Creating a plan will help you stay focused on what’s essential and prevent you from getting overwhelmed by the task.

There are many different plans, but the most important thing is that they’re tailored specifically to your goals and needs.

10. “A satisfied customer is the best business strategy of all.” — Michael LeBoeuf

Businesses have long known happy customers are the best way to achieve success. However, many businesses need to take the time to understand what makes their customers happy, and as a result, they need to pay more attention to one of the most critical aspects of the business.  A satisfied customer is not only more likely to return and recommend your business to others, but they may also be more likely to spread word-of-mouth marketing evangelism throughout your target market. In other words, if you can keep your customers happy, you’re on your way to success.

Businesses should ensure that they provide high-quality products and services at a fair price to ensure that their customers are always content. They should also take care of their customers by addressing any concerns or complaints that they may have.

11. “There’s only one growth strategy: work hard.” — William Hague

Do you want to be a millionaire? Of course not! But if you want to achieve financial stability, there is only one growth strategy: work hard. It is not to say that there are no other methods of achieving success, but at the end of the day, it’s all about effort and dedication. If you put in the effort, you will reap the rewards.

The unfortunate truth is that many people need to learn how to work hard. They think they can coast on their good looks or intelligence and achieve success without exerting effort. It is not valid. Anyone can become successful if they put in the hard work required. If you want to get ahead, it’s essential to learn to work hard.

12. “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.” — Peter Drucker

This quote by Peter Drucker reflects his belief that there are better ways to go than efficiency. Sometimes it’s better to do something inefficiently – or even not- to get the most important task done.

It is especially true when it comes to decision-making. Making the wrong decision can have serious consequences, so it’s essential to avoid making hasty decisions that could have long-term negative consequences. Instead, careful consideration should take the place of every option before making a final decision. This approach will lead to more efficient – and ultimately better – results.

13. “In real life, strategy is very straightforward. You pick a general direction and implement it like hell.” — Jack Welch

Strategy is simple in theory but often challenging to execute in practice. According to business legend Jack Welch, “In real life, strategy is very straightforward. You pick a general direction and implement it like hell.” Effective strategy requires three key elements: a clear vision, detailed plans, and relentless execution. With a clear vision of where you want to go, it’s easier to develop detailed plans to get you there. And with relentless execution, your plans will come to fruition. Strategy isn’t about pontificating about the future; it’s about getting your hands dirty and making things happen.

14. “Success is 20% skills and 80% strategy. You might know how to succeed, but more importantly, what’s your plan to succeed?” — Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn, a highly successful American businessman, author, and motivational speaker, once said, “Success is 20 skills and 80 strategies.” This quote provides insight into what it takes to be successful and why it’s crucial to develop a plan for success. If you want to succeed in your life, you need to focus on developing the 20% skills necessary for success listed by Rohn. These skills include: setting goals, having good habits, working hard, perseverance, self-discipline, and more.

However, developing an 80 strategy is also essential for achieving success. This strategy includes identifying your weaknesses and building action plans to overcome them. By focusing on both aspects of success – the skills and strategy – you are guaranteed to become successful in your endeavors.

15. By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” — Benjamin Franklin

This statement is especially relevant in the modern world, where many believe success comes without effort. However, Franklin’s quote works to so much more than just professional achievement. We also set ourselves up for failure by failing to plan for the future. For example, if you don’t have a financial plan, you will likely struggle financially during difficult times. Similarly, if you don’t have a proper safety strategy in place, you could be injured or killed while performing activities that are important to you. By taking the time to plan and prepare for challenges ahead, we can avoid failed attempts and achieve our goals.

16. “Globalization means that business strategy and business ethics cannot be separated from each other.” ― Ofra Strauss

With the rise of globalization, business strategy and ethics have become increasingly intertwined. It has led to a greater emphasis on integrated thinking and a greater need for businesses to consider not just their short-term interests but also the impact of their actions on other businesses and communities worldwide.

This interconnectedness is essential regarding what companies do and how they think about doing it. For example, many companies now approach globalization by emphasizing collaboration and sharing best practices. It is because it’s clear that acting alone can lead to negative consequences for both individual companies and the global economy. Integrated thinking is also crucial when deciding how to behave ethically in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

17. “A strategy is necessary because the future is unpredictable.” — Robert Waterman

Strategy is necessary because the future is unpredictable. Futures markets are a way to understand probable events, but they can’t predict the future with 100 percent accuracy. Despite this limitation, strategies can exist to make informed decisions about what to do in response to uncertain outcomes. A well-crafted strategy considers short-term and long-term considerations, business needs, and competitive pressures. It should also be flexible enough to change as new information becomes available.

It’s essential to understand your business and its competitive environment to create a successful strategy; You need to identify your target market and assess which of your competitors is most likely to succeed in capturing that market share. You also need to consider your resources (financial, human, etc.) and determine where you want them devoted in the near and long term.

18. “However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.” — Sir Winston Churchill

It is especially true when it comes to strategic planning. A flawed strategy can be beautiful if it leads to successful outcomes, but you should occasionally take a step back and evaluate the results. A good starting point is understanding your goals. What do you want to achieve? Is success simply averting a disaster, or does winning matter as well? Once you know what’s important, figure out how best to achieve it.

Strategic planning isn’t just about making plans; it’s also about testing and adapting those plans as necessary. Do your calculations correctly and make sure that your assumptions are realistic. And remember the importance of communication and coordination – two critical ingredients in any successful plan.

19. “Strategy is not the consequence of planning, but the opposite: its starting point.” — Henry Mintzberg

Strategy is not the consequence of planning but the opposite: its starting point. Planning without strategy produces a plan without purpose, while strategy without planning produces random wandering and, ultimately, failure. Strategy is creating a desired future by understanding how people and organizations behave in the present. It starts with understanding what everyone wants (their objectives), then makes assumptions about how they will try to achieve those objectives (the strategies they will use), and selects the actions that will enable them to achieve their goals (the tactics).

20. “Strategy is the economy of forces.” — Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz

Strategy is the economy of forces. It is the process by which an individual or organization selects, identifies, and employs the correct combination of means and ends to achieve the desired objective. In its simplest form, strategy is the art of making choices. A successful strategy requires a clear understanding of both the opponent’s capabilities and intentions and your own. The strategy must be flexible enough to change in response to changing circumstances, yet it should also have a plan for executing that plan regardless of what happens. A successful strategy usually relies on sound intelligence and realistic expectations about potential outcomes.

21. “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” — Peter Drucker

Culture eats strategy for breakfast. But what does that mean? It means that a company’s culture is the first and foremost factor in its success or failure. Understanding and capitalizing on your company’s culture to succeed in business is essential.

A company’s culture is its employees’ shared values and beliefs. It can include everything from how employees get rewards to how they’re allowed to work. A good culture will help a company attract and keep top talent because it offers security and continuity. Understanding your company’s heritage and history is key to creating a great culture is understanding your company’s heritage and history.

22. “The entrance strategy is more important than the exit strategy.” ― Edward Lampert

The entrance strategy is more important than the exit strategy. It is a well-known fact in the business world, and it’s something that should be kept in mind when starting or running a company. Companies should put an exit strategy into place if they are about to go out of business, but an entrance strategy should always be in place if the goal is to grow and expand. A good entrance strategy will attract new customers, investors, and partners, while an effective exit strategy will gracefully help a company wind down its operations. There are many factors to consider when designing an effective entry or exit strategy, including target markets, competitive landscape, financial stability, and regulatory constraints.

23. “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed.” — Willian Gibson

This clever phrase by William Gibson offers an important reminder about strategy and the future. Rather than waiting for the future to come, we can identify places where it is already present and use that information to shape our strategy. Companies who are quick to recognize when and where the future is arriving first have a considerable advantage concerning their competitors — they can learn how and why innovations are succeeding while catching potential pitfalls in advance. This requires paying attention and closely monitoring developments as they arise. Doing so allows us to create a strategy that anticipates the future rather than simply reacting.

24. “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy are the noise before defeat.” — Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese strategist, is often quoted as saying, “The art of war is simple — but it is difficult to practice.” This quote aptly captures the essence of Sun Tzu’s teachings on strategy: it is a complex process that requires both understanding and execution.

Indeed, with proper planning and execution, any strategy can quickly become effective. As Sun Tzu wisely points out, noise – or the lack thereof – can be the critical indicator of victory or defeat. In other words, tactics without strategy are ineffective and doomed to fail, while strategies without tactics can also be effective but will take longer to succeed.  It is thus crucial for any organization or individual looking to achieve victory in any given situation to have a well-developed strategy alongside tactical plans.

25. “There is only one winning strategy. It is to define the target market carefully and direct a superior offering to that target market.”— Philip Kotler

When it comes to business, there is often a lot of confusion surrounding the “winning strategy.” As it turns out, the answer isn’t too complicated – you must define your target market carefully and direct a superior offering to that target market.

Understanding who your customers are and what they want to become the biggest and most successful company in your field is essential. Do some research into the demographics of your target market and figure out what makes them different from other people in your industry. Then, come up with a product or service that caters to their needs.

It may sound like a difficult task, but if you do it correctly, you’ll be well on your way to success. With this knowledge, you can create a winning business strategy that will put you ahead of the competition.

26. “Strategy is a commodity; execution is an art.” — Peter Drucker

Strategy is a commodity; execution is an art. This quote from Peter Drucker has become famous in the business world, and for a good reason. Strategy is a necessary ingredient for success, but it’s also important to remember that execution is critical to achieving greatness.

Execution depends on both the planning and implementation of a strategy. The entire strategy will succeed if the execution of one part of the process is successful. Effective execution requires vital planning and meticulous execution, both skills that can be learned and improved over time.

Successful businesses understand this and invest in their employees so they can carry out their plans effectively. Likewise, influential leaders understand that excellent execution comes from understanding their team members’ strengths and building a culture of accountability and cooperation where everyone participates in shared success.

27. “Strategy without process is little more than a wish list.” — Robert Filek

Strategy without process is little more than a wish list. Without a defined strategy, your organization is at risk – and that’s not always the best option. Too often, organizations attempt to implement a strategy without creating an effective plan of action. It can result in wasted time and resources and ineffective performance.

First and foremost, you need to create a framework for your strategy that outlines what you hope to achieve. Once you have this foundation in place, it’s essential to establish specific goals and objectives for each stage of the implementation process. With an identified roadmap, your organization will quickly become recovered and be satisfied.

A well-defined strategy is essential for success – make sure you keep the process from getting in the way of progress.

28. “Without a strategy, execution is aimless. Without execution, strategy is useless.” — Morris Chang

There can always be more emphasis placed on strategic execution. Strategy without execution is nothing more than a plan on paper; it has no power to bring about change. Without effective execution, strategy becomes nothing more than a suggestion and can even be counterproductive if not executed properly. Execution involves taking action to achieve the desired results; strategy can quickly become irrelevant without it.

A lack of strategy without good execution can have several negative consequences. First and foremost, it can result in wasted resources and lost opportunities. Second, it can erode public confidence in your company’s ability to execute its plans – ultimately damaging your reputation. Finally, poor execution can undermine the very goals you set for yourself – leading to an ultimate loss of credibility and success.

29. “Strategy is Circular; it is not linear” ― Fritz Shoemaker

Strategy is not linear. Most often, it is circular. It means that a company’s strategy changes as it progresses rather than progressing in a straight line. A circular strategy is more effective because it allows feedback loops to be maintained, and quick adjustments are possible.

The main advantages of using a circular strategy are that it is adaptable and responsive to changing conditions and minimizes waste. Waste can occur when one allocates resources in a way that does not achieve the desired outcome or makes investments without considering future needs.

By implementing a circular strategy, companies can ensure that their resources are used effectively and save money on projects or initiatives that will not result in the desired outcome.

30. “Winning should be at the heart of every strategy.” — A.G. Lafley & Roger L. Martin

When leaders think about how their company should operate, they often focus on the “triple bottom line” or “financial bottom line.” This measure of success looks at revenue, profit, and shareholder value. But there’s another metric that executives should be thinking about: winning.

Winning should be at the heart of every strategy because it is the best way to attract and keep top talent and to create long-term shareholder value. When a company makes winning its top priority, it attracts talented individuals who want to work for a successful and profitable company. It also creates a culture of winners in which everyone strives for continual improvement. In addition, making winning the top priority can increase shareholder value because it means that shareholders are getting a higher return on their investment than if a company didn’t emphasize winning.

31. “Creative without strategy is called ‘art.’ Creative with strategy is called ‘advertising.” — Jef I. Richards

The relationship between creativity and strategy is an important one in the advertising world. Too often, one can do creative work without a plan or roadmap, resulting in lackluster results. On the other hand, clever marketing campaigns that are well thought out and executed can be incredibly successful.

A transparent target market is a vital element of a well-executed campaign. You need to know who your audience is to create content that speaks to the customers specifically. Additionally, effective marketing campaigns must have a good launch plan. Not only must you determine what content and ads you’ll use, but you also must ensure the proper scheduling to ensure your potential customers understand. Therefore, creating great creative work without strategy is called ‘art.’ Creating great creative work with strategy is called ‘advertising.

32. “A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.” — Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Vision statements serve as a rallying cry for organizations and individuals alike. They are not just pictures of what could be but an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more. They help us identify our goals, set attainable targets, and create momentum toward accomplishing them. While vision statements may seem lofty and out of reach when first conceived, the power of a well-crafted vision lies in its ability to motivate us toward change.

The benefits of having a solid vision are clear: A vision is not only motivating but also predictive. By understanding where you want to go and why you want to get there, you can avoid getting sidetracked by trivial matters or obstacles on your way. Furthermore, having a clear vision allows others within an organization to see their role within the larger picture and work collaboratively towards common goals.

33. “Strategy is buying a bottle of fine wine when you take a lady out for dinner. Tactics are getting her to drink it.” — Frank Muir

The strategy is buying a bottle of fine wine when you take a lady out for dinner. Tactics are getting her to drink it. The difference between the two is that strategy is about planning, while tactics are about executing. When you buy a bottle of wine, you’re hoping the lady will like it and want to drink it. If she doesn’t like the wine, then your strategy has failed.

On the other hand, if she does like the wine and drinks it, then your tactic has succeeded. Both strategies aim to get the lady to drink the wine. But while one outcome is a success, another outcome can fail if she doesn’t enjoy the wine or gets sick from drinking it.

34. “You build your own strategy. You don’t define it by what another competitor is doing.” ― Ginni Rometty

In today’s business world, it is critical to define your strategy. Too often, companies follow the strategies of their competitors instead of developing their own. It can lead to disastrous results, as competitors can quickly overtake you with a better strategy.

Fortunately, there is no need to mimic the strategies of others if you want to achieve business success. Instead, you should focus on developing your unique approach. It means defining what you want your company to accomplish and then working tirelessly to achieve it. You don’t have to rely on other companies or individuals for guidance; you can develop your strategy by researching and consulting with experts when necessary.

35. “Leaders establish the vision for the future and set the strategy for getting there.” ― John P. Kotter

Leaders establish the vision for the future and set the strategy for getting there. They create a compelling vision that inspires employees, communicates the company’s values, and drives performance. Vision setting is an essential aspect of leadership, as it sets the tone for the organization and provides direction for future decision-making.

Successful vision setting begins with understanding what stakeholders want and need from their organizations. Leaders then create a compelling narrative that ties these needs back to the company’s values and mission. One must communicate this story throughout the organization to rally support and inspire employees to pursue common goals.

A well-planned vision also requires a clear strategy, which spells out how employees will achieve the objectives of the vision. Leaders must develop a plan that considers both short-term and long-term considerations.

36. “Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy.” – Norman Schwarzkopf

Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy. Without a strategy, you will likely lead your team to failure. Strategy is about planning for the future, setting goals, and creating a plan of action to achieve those goals. Character is what makes the strategy work. Integrity, selflessness, and moral fiber allow people to put themselves in other people’s shoes and understand their motivations.  Without character, your team will not believe in your mission or follow your lead.

37. “The basic strategy is to stick to my core business and my area of expertise.” ― Henry Sy

When starting a business, one of the most important things is to determine your core business and focus on that. Doing this will create a successful company and keep your customers and employees happy.

Some businesses try to diversify too much, which can lead to issues down the road. For example, if your company sells products in multiple categories, you may need help to compete against companies specializing in just one area. It’s also important to stay true to your niche market; if you start selling products outside your area of expertise, customers may be less likely to return.

It’s also important to remember that while marketing is essential, it’s only some of it. If you neglect your manufacturing or shipping processes, you might lose money.

38. “Strategy requires thought, tactics require observation.” ― Max Euwe

Strategy requires thought; tactics require observation. Max Euwe recognized this when he said, “strategy is the art of thinking ahead, while tactics are the art of seeing what is happening.” A good strategy takes time to develop and relies on sound analysis and understanding of the game. Tactics, however, are more immediate; they are concerned with what is happening in the present.

103.   “you are either improving or getting worse.” -unknown.

This quote suggests that there is no such thing as staying the same or remaining stagnant. Instead, the implication is that every individual or organization is constantly in a state of change and that the direction of that change can either be positive or negative. In other words, if someone is not actively working to improve or grow, then they are likely to experience a decline in their abilities or performance over time. The quote underscores the importance of ongoing self-improvement, development, and learning in order to achieve and maintain success.

Fluid Intelligence- Quotes About Strategy

104.   “education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” –socrates.

This quote by Socrates suggests that the purpose of education is not simply to fill a student’s mind with knowledge, but rather to ignite a passion for learning and intellectual curiosity. Rather than viewing education as a static, one-way process where knowledge is simply imparted from teacher to student, this quote emphasizes the dynamic, two-way nature of learning. The goal is not to simply fill students with facts and information, but to inspire them to think critically, ask questions, and pursue their own interests and passions. The quote underscores the importance of creating an engaging, stimulating learning environment that encourages active participation and a lifelong love of learning.

105.   “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change. “ -Einstein

This quote by Albert Einstein suggests that one’s intelligence is not necessarily measured by one’s accumulated knowledge or mental abilities, but rather by one’s ability to adapt and change in response to new information and experiences. In other words, being smart is not just about knowing a lot of facts or being good at solving complex problems, but also about being able to evolve and adapt one’s thinking in response to changing circumstances.

This quote emphasizes the importance of being open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn throughout one’s life. It suggests that intelligence is not a fixed or static trait, but rather a dynamic quality that can be developed and honed over time. By embracing change and staying open to new ideas and perspectives, one can continually grow and evolve, and become more intelligent and successful in all aspects of life.

106.   “It’s not what you know, it’s how fast you can learn.” -Liz Wiseman

The quote means that in today’s fast-paced and constantly changing world, it’s not just about what you already know, but how quickly you can learn and adapt to new challenges and opportunities. It emphasizes the importance of being a continuous learner and having a growth mindset, as these are crucial for staying relevant and successful in today’s rapidly evolving economy.

Crystallized Intelligence – Quotes About Strategy

107.   “knowledge is having the right answer. intelligence is asking the right questions.”-unknown.

This quote implies that while knowledge is important, true intelligence involves more than just having the right answers. It involves being able to ask the right questions and seek out information that can lead to deeper understanding and insight. In other words, intelligence is not just about what you know, but also about your ability to learn and think critically.

108.   “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.“ -ALVIN TOFFLER

This quote by Alvin Toffler means that in the 21st century, it is not enough to just acquire knowledge and skills. Rather, it is necessary to continuously learn and adapt to new situations and challenges, to unlearn what is no longer relevant, and to relearn new ways of thinking and doing things. In other words, the ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of change and uncertainty is more important than simply having a set of static skills or knowledge.

Most Training is Useless – Quotes About Strategy

109.   “it is, after all, the dab of grit that seeps into an oysters shell that makes a pearl, not pearl making seminars with other oysters.” -stephen king.

This quote by Stephen King emphasizes the importance of hard work and persistence in achieving success. The “dab of grit” represents the effort and determination required to overcome challenges and obstacles in order to create something valuable or achieve a goal. King suggests that this effort is more important than attending seminars or simply acquiring knowledge without putting it into practice. The analogy of the pearl being formed within an oyster’s shell suggests that greatness often arises from difficult and uncomfortable circumstances, but the result can be something beautiful and valuable.

67.   “Businesses often use training as a surrogate for the hard work of true skill development.”-Bill Peper, facilitator within General Motors’ Standards for Excellence process

This quote means that many businesses may use training as a way to improve their employees’ skills, but they may not be doing enough to actually develop those skills through real-life experiences and practice. Training can be a valuable tool, but it is not a substitute for the hard work and dedication required to truly develop skills that are necessary for success. In essence, the quote suggests that true skill development requires more than just attending training seminars or workshops, and that businesses must be willing to invest the time and resources needed to help employees truly develop their skills through hands-on experience and practice.

110.   “Training is too often used as an inexpensive way to look like you’re doing something if you’re a manager. As typically done, it requires little time and little personal change.” -Ted Harro

This quote suggests that some managers use training programs as a way to appear like they are making efforts to improve their employees and the business, without actually putting in the necessary effort or resources. They see training as a quick and cheap fix to address problems, rather than recognizing that true skill development and change requires personal investment and commitment. In other words, the quote implies that simply offering training is not enough; the real challenge is to create a culture of learning and development that leads to meaningful change and improvement.

Thinking Like a Leader – Quotes About Strategy

111.   “improvise, adapt, overcome.” – green berets.

The quote “Improvise, adapt, overcome” is a phrase commonly used in the military, particularly by the United States Marine Corps and Green Berets. It means that in the face of unexpected challenges or changing circumstances, one must be flexible and resourceful enough to find a way to succeed. It is a call to action to think creatively, be adaptable, and persevere in the face of adversity. In essence, the quote encourages individuals to overcome obstacles and challenges by being resilient and taking bold, creative action.

112.   “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Serenity prayer

The Serenity Prayer is a popular prayer that is often used to promote acceptance, courage, and wisdom. The prayer is attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr, an American theologian, and is often associated with Alcoholics Anonymous and other addiction recovery programs.

In the context of strategy, this quote can be interpreted to mean that it’s important to recognize the limitations of what we can and cannot control, and to focus our efforts on the things that we can change. When developing a strategic plan, it’s important to identify which factors are within our control, and which factors are outside of our control. We should focus on changing the things that we can, while accepting the things that we cannot change. This requires wisdom and discernment to know the difference, and the courage to take action where possible. By focusing on what we can change, and accepting what we cannot change, we can develop a more effective and sustainable strategy.

113.   “Theory without practice is pointless; practice without theory is mindless.” -Andrew MacLennan

This quote emphasizes the importance of both theory and practice in any endeavor, including strategy. Theory provides a framework and understanding of concepts, while practice provides the opportunity to apply those concepts and gain experience.

In the context of strategy, the quote highlights the importance of not only developing a sound theoretical understanding of strategic concepts and principles but also applying that knowledge in practical situations. A strategy that is based purely on theory and has not been tested or applied in real-world situations is likely to be ineffective or even detrimental to the organization. On the other hand, a strategy that is developed purely through trial and error without any theoretical underpinnings is likely to be haphazard and inconsistent. The best approach is to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience and to continually refine and adapt the strategy based on real-world results.

Chess Not Checkers – Quotes About Strategy

114.   “chess is like looking across an ocean. checkers is like looking down a well.” -dr. marion f. tinsley.

This quote is often interpreted to mean that chess is a much more complex and strategic game than checkers. Chess involves predicting and anticipating your opponent’s moves, and adapting your strategy accordingly. In contrast, checkers is a simpler game with fewer variables to consider, and it is generally easier to see the consequences of a given move.

In terms of strategy, the quote suggests that the most effective strategies require an understanding of the complexities and nuances of a given situation, and the ability to anticipate and adapt to changing circumstances. A successful strategy should take into account a wide range of factors, and be flexible enough to adjust as needed. Simply relying on a set of rules or standard tactics may not be sufficient to achieve long-term success in complex or rapidly changing environments.

115.   “Winning in this game is all a matter of understanding how to capitalize on the strengths of each piece and timing their moves just right.” -Bobby Fisher

This quote, spoken by Bobby Fisher, one of the greatest chess players of all time, emphasizes the importance of understanding the strengths and weaknesses of individual pieces in order to make the right moves at the right time. This principle is also applicable in the realm of strategy, as a successful strategy requires a thorough understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of one’s own resources and the resources of the competition, as well as the ability to time moves and take advantage of opportunities as they arise. In essence, the quote emphasizes the importance of strategic thinking and the ability to apply that thinking in a timely and effective manner.

116.   “Everybody Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth.” -Mike Tyson

This quote by Mike Tyson means that everyone can come up with a plan or a strategy to achieve their goals until something unexpected happens, such as an obstacle or a setback. At that point, the plan may no longer be effective, and the person must adjust their approach to succeed. The quote emphasizes the importance of being flexible and adaptable in one’s strategy, as even the best-laid plans can fail in the face of unforeseen circumstances. In business, this quote highlights the need for companies to have contingency plans in place for dealing with unexpected events, and to be able to pivot quickly in response to changing market conditions or other factors that may impact their success.

Be Decisive – Quotes About Strategy

117.   “you’re allowed to fail; you’re not allowed to not try.” -david maister.

This quote by David Maister means that it is better to try and fail than not to try at all. Failure is a natural part of the learning process, and it is only by taking risks and trying new things that we can learn and grow. The quote also implies that it is important to take action, rather than just thinking or talking about things. In terms of strategy, this quote suggests that it is important to take calculated risks and be willing to experiment with new approaches, even if there is a risk of failure. It is better to try and fail than to stick with the same old strategies and never make any progress.

118.   “Done is better than perfect.” -Cheryl Sandberg

The quote “Done is better than perfect” means that it is often more important to complete a task or project to the best of your ability and get it done, rather than spending too much time trying to make it perfect. This mindset emphasizes the importance of action and progress over the pursuit of perfection, which can lead to delays and missed opportunities.

In the context of strategy, this quote can be seen as a reminder that strategy is an ongoing process that involves taking action and making adjustments as you go along. It’s important to keep moving forward and making progress, even if things aren’t perfect, in order to achieve your goals and objectives. It’s better to have a strategy that is “good enough” and implemented effectively than to spend too much time trying to perfect it and miss out on opportunities for growth and success.

119.   “Not making a choice is still a choice.” -Unknown

The quote “Not making a choice is still a choice” means that even if you choose not to make a decision, you are still making a decision by default. It emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for our choices, and that inaction or indecisiveness can have consequences just as much as making a decision. In the context of strategy, it applies to the importance of actively making strategic decisions, rather than simply allowing things to unfold or deferring to others. It underscores the need for leaders and decision-makers to take ownership of their decisions and actively drive the direction of their organization, rather than passively waiting for events to unfold or relying on others to make decisions for them.

Reactive or Proactive – Quotes About Strategy

120.   “failure to prepare means preparing to fail.” – unknown.

The quote “Failure to prepare means preparing to fail” means that if you do not put in the necessary preparation and planning for something, the likelihood of success decreases. In other words, failure can often be the result of insufficient preparation. This quote can apply to strategy by emphasizing the importance of preparation, planning, and thoroughness in developing and executing a strategy. If a strategy is not adequately thought out and prepared for, the chances of failure increase significantly. Therefore, taking the time to plan and prepare for a strategy is essential to increase the likelihood of success.

121.   “I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.” – DR. STEPHEN R. COVEY

This quote by Dr. Stephen R. Covey means that a person’s decisions, choices, and actions are what shape their life, rather than the circumstances they are born into. It highlights the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own life and not blaming external factors for one’s shortcomings or failures. In the context of strategy, this quote emphasizes the importance of being proactive and taking ownership of one’s decisions and actions in order to achieve desired outcomes, rather than simply reacting to circumstances as they arise. It encourages individuals to focus on what they can control, rather than being limited by what they cannot control.

Lucky or Prepared – Quotes About Strategy

122.   “anyone can get lucky; not everyone can persevere.” -the daily stoic.

This quote means that success is not solely determined by chance or luck. It acknowledges that luck can play a role in achieving success, but it ultimately places greater importance on perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges and obstacles. In the context of strategy, this quote highlights the importance of persistence and determination in achieving strategic goals. It suggests that while a strategy may encounter setbacks or failures, it is the ability to learn from those experiences and continue to push forward that ultimately leads to success. A successful strategy requires a team that is willing to work hard, learn from failures, and persist in the face of adversity.

123.   “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” -Seneca

This quote by Seneca means that luck is not purely a matter of chance or happenstance, but rather the result of preparation and being ready to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. It suggests that being proactive, taking action, and being prepared are crucial to success.

In terms of strategy, this quote emphasizes the importance of being prepared for unexpected opportunities or challenges that may arise. A well-prepared strategy that anticipates potential scenarios and has contingency plans in place can help a business or organization capitalize on opportunities or navigate unexpected obstacles with greater ease and success. By being prepared, one can increase the likelihood of being in the right place at the right time and having the necessary resources and knowledge to seize opportunities or overcome challenges.

124.   “There are facts and opportunities and realities, and how you respond to them determines whether you succeed or fail. Luck becomes a convenient excuse when things don’t go your way and a rationale for staying comfortable while you wait for luck to determine your fate. You can’t become excellent at execution if you’re willing to gamble everything on the unknown. ” – Grover, Tim S. Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable

This quote suggests that luck alone cannot guarantee success in any endeavor. While luck can certainly play a role, success is ultimately determined by how one responds to facts, opportunities, and realities. Instead of relying on luck, one must take action, be prepared, and make decisions based on available information. Luck should not be used as an excuse for failure, but rather as an opportunity to improve and better prepare for the next challenge. In the context of strategy, this quote emphasizes the importance of planning, preparation, and execution, and highlights the risks associated with relying on chance or luck alone to achieve success.

125.   “I believe that people make their own luck by great preparation and good strategy.”- Jack Canfield

This quote means that luck is not a purely random occurrence, but rather something that can be influenced and created through effective preparation and strategy. It implies that success is not solely dependent on luck, but rather the result of focused effort, thoughtful planning, and careful execution. In the context of strategy, this quote suggests that a well-executed strategy can help create opportunities and increase the likelihood of success. It emphasizes the importance of careful planning, attention to detail, and proactive decision-making in achieving one’s goals.

Battles win wars – Quotes About Strategy

126.   “the talent of the strategist is to identify the decisive point and to concentrate everything on it, removing forces from secondary fronts and ignoring lesser objectives.” – carl von clausewitz.

This quote by Carl von Clausewitz suggests that a strategist’s talent lies in identifying the critical point of a situation, which, if appropriately addressed, will lead to the desired outcome. The strategist must then focus their resources and attention on that point, rather than becoming distracted by less important or peripheral goals. In a strategic context, this quote implies that leaders and decision-makers must prioritize their efforts and resources towards the most important areas that will have the most significant impact on their desired outcomes, rather than spreading themselves too thin across multiple objectives. By focusing on the crucial point, they can achieve their goals efficiently and effectively.

Attack the Flanks – Quotes About Strategy

127.   “attack him where he is unprepared; appear where you are not expected.” -sun tzu.

This quote by Sun Tzu from “The Art of War” means that in order to be successful in a strategic situation, you should try to attack your opponent where they are not prepared and appear where they don’t expect you. This involves understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both yourself and your opponent, and exploiting those weaknesses to gain an advantage. In the context of strategy, this quote highlights the importance of planning and preparation, as well as the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and take advantage of unexpected opportunities. It also emphasizes the need to be creative and flexible in order to stay ahead of the competition.

Going Too Far? The Maverick and The Heretic- Quotes About Strategy

128.   “vision without execution is hallucination.” -thomas edison.

The quote “Vision without execution is hallucination” by Thomas Edison means that having a great idea or vision is not enough to achieve success. It is essential to have a plan of action and to execute that plan. In other words, without taking action, a vision is just a dream or an illusion.

In terms of strategy, this quote emphasizes the importance of not just having a well-crafted strategy, but also effectively executing it. A well-defined strategy provides direction and guidance, but it is the execution of that strategy that ultimately leads to success. It highlights the need to have a clear plan, set specific goals, and take decisive action to achieve those goals. Without execution, a strategy is just a set of ideas and goals that have no impact on the organization or individual.

Teach a Man to Fish – Quotes About Strategy

129.   “give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” -unknown.

This quote means that it is better to teach someone how to do something for themselves rather than simply doing it for them. By teaching someone a skill, they can use that skill to improve their life and become more self-sufficient in the long run. This quote can be applied to strategy in a few ways. For example, it can be more effective to train employees to develop skills that will help them be more productive in their work, rather than simply giving them a solution to a problem. Additionally, it can be more beneficial for a leader to work with their team to develop a strategy collaboratively, rather than simply dictating a plan to them. By involving team members in the strategy development process, they will have a better understanding of the goals and how they can contribute to achieving them.

130.   “Strategy without process is little more than a wish list.” -Robert Filek

This quote highlights the importance of process in achieving strategic goals. While strategy provides the direction and vision, it is the processes and methods that translate that vision into concrete actions and outcomes. Without effective processes, even the best strategy can become unattainable or a mere aspiration. Therefore, having a well-defined and structured process that supports the strategy is crucial for achieving success. This quote can apply to various contexts where strategic planning is involved, such as business, education, or personal development.

Inspiring Quotes about Strategic Planning

by Funding For Good | Feb 27, 2023 | Strategic Planning

Two strategic planning quotes: "Strategic planning is a process, not a product," by Funding for Good; and "Most people think of strategy as an event, but that's not the way the world works," from Clayton Christensen, Harvard Business School Professor.

When your organization is getting started with a strategic planning process, “inspiring” might not be the first word that comes to mind. But in Funding for Good’s work with dozens of organizations, we’ve found that inspiration is exactly what the strategic planning process provides. So to help inspire you, we’ve gathered some of our favorite quotes about strategic planning.

First though, if you’re struggling to get your planning process started, our guides on to How to Write a Strategic Planning RFP and How to Select and Work with a Strategic Planning Consultant can save you time and energy.

Quotes about the Value of Visioning in Strategic Planning

At the core of strategic planning is carving out time to create a vision for the future. Instead of just looking one year out, organizations often look 3, 5, or sometimes even 10 years ahead. Organizations map where they want to be, what they want to accomplish, and how they’re going to achieve those goals.

As these quotes suggest, that long-range goal-setting process often unlocks insights and inspiration and can help re-energize your team.

“Strategic planning is worthless – unless there is first a strategic vision.” John Naisbitt
“If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.” Yogi Berra
“A goal should scare you a little and excite you A LOT.” Joe Vitale
“A goal is a dream with a deadline.” Ken Blanchard

Quotes about the Strategic Planning Process

Here at Funding for Good, we think a lot about the strategic planning process. And we’re always working to ensure our approach meets each client’s unique needs. In our client work, our own favorite saying is:

“Strategic planning is a process, not a product.” Funding for Good

Leaders often find this approach helpful. It upends the idea that the goal of a strategic planning process is a single written document. Yes, a written plan is a key outcome. But just as important is aligning your stakeholders around a shared vision. The Harvard Business School and President Dwight D. Eisenhower both agree:

“Most people think of strategy as an event, but that’s not the way the world works.” Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen
“Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Quotes that Reveal Unexpected Benefits of Strategic Planning

If you’re a leader who is perpetually running from one crisis to the next, these quotes illustrate how strategic planning can save you time in the long run.

“The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do.” Michael Porter
“An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing.” Dale Carnegie

The prioritization that strategic planning entails also comes in handy when you’re working to accomplish ambitious goals. Especially since none of us have enough time to do everything.

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.” Leonard Bernstein

Quotes about the Power of Fresh Perspectives

Another valuable part of the strategic planning process is how it creates a structured opportunity to bring in a range of perspectives. As a leader, you might hear voices and ideas you haven’t previously had the time or opportunity to consider. In our experience, this leads to a stronger plan and a greater chance of successful implementation. The experts agree.

“If you’re crafting a strategic plan for your organization and know which strategy you prefer, enlist others with differing views and opinions to help look for information that either proves or disproves the idea.” Harvard Business School
“If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” George S. Patton

Finally, it can be helpful to remember that you don’t have to accomplish all your strategic goals tomorrow. Indeed, as Vincent van Gogh reminds us:

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent van Gogh

We hope you’re as inspired as we are to get working on strategic planning!

Planning Quotes

1. “it does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near one.” – j.r.r. tolkien.

This planning quote from Tolkien’s fantasy classic The Hobbit does what all good quotes should do, speaks to the reader on many levels. This is, of course, a piece of dialogue that moves the plot forward. But Tolkien isn’t merely talking about made-up lands. He’s referring to the necessity of identifying risk in any thorough plan.

2. “By Failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin

You can always count on our Founding Fathers for good copy, and none gives better than Benjamin Franklin. He collected them in his Old Farmer’s Almanac and a few probably made their way into some of our fundamental governing documents. Freeing a country from under the powerful arm of a great power is going to take some planning, which Franklin knew was the first step towards success.

3. “Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.” – Gloria Steinem

Sometimes we forget that a plan is document that puts structure around an idea. But without that vision to set the plan in motion, there’s really no point in following through. Feminist icon Gloria Steinem understands that before there is a plan, there is a dream. That’s always the first step in any plan.

Planning Quote Gloria Steinem

4. “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abraham Lincoln

No president had to face as great a challenge as Abraham Lincoln. If he didn’t spend time planning and placing sensitive pieces, it’s likely that we’d be living in a very different country today. Never neglect the time and effort necessary for due diligence before action.

5. “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” – Yogi Berra

Out of the mouth of baseball players often comes great wisdom. The term Yogi-isims was created to describe Berra’s malapropisms and unintentional witticism. But they’re not just for laughs. As simple as the above statement is, nothing is more true.

Planning Quote Yogi Berra

6. “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” – John F. Kennedy

President John Kennedy filled the United States with hope, and then we all know what happened. But when we still were filled with a sense of optimism about the future, Kennedy made it clear that whatever future we had in front of us was due to what we did behind it.

7. “The more time you spend contemplating what you should have done…you lose valuable time planning what you can and will do.” – Lil Wayne

Hip-hop is omnivorous, so it was only a matter of time before a rapper like Lil Wayne spoke to the concerns of project managers. While it’s important to learn from your mistakes, you can get bogged down on the “blame game.” Figure out where you fell; then get back up, and try again.

Planning Quote Lil Wayne

8. “It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt hits on something important here with this quote about planning. She understands the human capacity to wish upon a star, to want something badly and hope that, by some trick of chance or fate, it will be given to you. But things rarely land on your lap, and if they do, they might not be what you want. Plan and you will receive.

Planning Quote Eleanor Roosevelt

9. “Have a bias towards action – let’s see something happen now. You can break that big plan into small steps and take the first step right away.” – Indira Gandhi

The Indian politician and stateswoman would have made a great project manager. She sees that big projects are made up of small, actionable takes. Plans are broken down into phases called milestones, which are made up of tasks, and that way things get done.

10. “Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans.” – Peter F. Drucker

Author and educator Peter Drucker is saying that there is no plan without buy-in from all parties involved. That means from the stakeholders to the team members. The project leader must motivate and get everyone committed, or else a plan is useless.

Planning Quote Peter F. Drucker

11. “Making a plan without the right tools is like making spaghetti without a pot.” – Me

Yeah, I just made that one up. Give it time, though. I’m sure it’ll be up there with Lincoln, Socrates and Martha Stewart as a top-tier, super quotable quote. Why? Because it’s true!

There’s meaning embedded in there: planning is really just an abstract act until you execute that plan. If you don’t have a pot, or project management tools, then your spaghetti, or project, isn’t going to get done.

Plans are complicated, like recipes. There are a lot of ingredients you need to keep track of and place in the right order. ProjectManager is a project management software that helps projects get organized. 12. “A man who does not plan long ahead will find trouble at his door.” – Confucius

Planning Quote Confucius

13. “Always plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.” – Richard Cushing

Planning Quote Richard Cushing

14. “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” – Warren Buffett

Who understands the need to prepare for the future better than an investor, and who is a better investor than Warren Buffett? Plan now and reap the benefits later. That’s true in financial markets or building a skyscraper. It takes time, but the hard work pays off.

Planning Quote Warren Buffett

15. “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” – Pablo Picasso

Even creative types like fabled master of modern art Pablo Picasso knew that inspiration is only a small part of any effort. The creative process is one of planning, failing and planning anew. But those plans are rooted in a belief that they will work. Without that faith, there is no plan that will clear the hurdles that block the progress of any project.

16. “Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.” – Tom Landry

Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry knows a thing or two about leading a team to success. While scoring points is, of course, how you do it, that’s not as easily said as done. A good coach uses a plan to exploit the talents of this team, and sticks to it – unless it must change . Landry didn’t say that, but I did.

Planning Quote Tom Landry

17. “Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning.” – Thomas Edison

Yes, sometimes the fates are smiling on you, and it’s as if everything just falls into place. But you can’t bank on luck. Inventor Thomas Edison saw that while opportunity is important, if you’re not prepared for it by having a plan to take advantage, then that opportunity will pass you by.

Planning Quote Thomas Edison

18. “Just because you made a good plan, doesn’t mean that’s what’s gonna happen.” Taylor Swift

Singer, songwriter and all-around cultural phenom Taylor Swift knows that a good plan is a good start. But if you want to finish what you started you might have to throw that plan out and make a new one. Things change, including your plan.

Planning Quote Taylor Swift

19. “Unless you have definite, precise, clearly set goals, you are not going to realize the maximum potential that lies within you.” – Zig Ziglar

Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar says that the sharper your focus, the closer you’ll come to hitting your target. Planning must be thorough, thinking through all the resources you’ll need , the budget and the time you must complete the project. The more planning you do, the better your results.

Planning Quote Zig Ziglar

20. “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” – Alexander Graham Bell

21. “To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time.” – Leonard Bernstein

It’s funny because it’s true. Composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein knows that plans are everything; we can work them up to be as thorough as possible, but time will always make a joke of our plans. Things happen; time doesn’t care.

Planning Quote Leonard Bernstein

22. “The reason that everybody likes planning is that nobody has to do anything.” – Jerry Brown

Jerry Brown has lead one of the largest states in the union and one of the largest economies in the world as governor of California. It’s a danger of planning that everyone should be aware of: plans are crucial, but without action they’re nothing.

Planning Quote Jerry Brown

23. “I ain’t Martin Luther King. I don’t need a dream. I have a plan.” – Spike Lee

Director Spike Lee is making a point. Of course, his work is driven by a passionate dream to create stories that he feels compelled to tell. But without having a plan, that’s all they would be, dreams.

Planning Quote Spike Lee

24. “When my company started really growing, I didn’t have any help in my house at all. I had the upkeep of my daily life, I had a one year old and a three year old, and I had my house. So I had to prioritize.” – Julie Aigner Clark

The entrepreneur who founded Baby Einstein hits on a key element of any strong plan. That is prioritization. A plan should be exhaustive, listing everything, no matter how minute. But then comes the hard part of prioritizing those tasks to know what must be done, what should be done and what could be left undone.

25. “I don’t believe in failure. It’s not failure if you enjoyed the process.” – Oprah Winfrey

Planning is the structuring of process. Failure is a part of every plan. That’s why there’s risk and risk management to prepare for the bumps on the road to success. As Oprah Winfrey notes, those failures are not failures; they’re part of the process.

Planning Quote Oprah Winfrey

26. “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin

The quote “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat” is not from Sun Tzu, at least not in any of the major translations. It is so commonly misattributed that even book editors have let it slip through. It doesn’t really appear until 2002 and the Giles translation (the most famous and widely used) was from 1910.

Not sure it really matters as it is a great line and, at least from my readings of Sun Tzu, it is something with which he would have agreed.
