Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are othe r shoe stores.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes department stores, big box retailers, and consignment stores. You need to mention such competition as well.

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a shoe store business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your shoe store business, including taking inventory, ordering new products, customer interaction, cleaning the store, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to sell your Xth shoe, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your shoe store to a new city.

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance s heet, and cash flow statements.

Income Statement

An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you sell 5 shoes per day, and/or offer seasonal discount offers ? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your shoe store, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a shoe store:

  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff

On has tapped Navalayo Osembo as its new head of Africa as the running shoe and apparel brand looks to expand its presence across the continent.

In the newly created role, Osembo will focus on building On’s Africa business, developing relationships athletes in the region and working with On’s social impact program, Right to Run. “I am looking forward to building On in Africa authentically and holistically in a way that adds to On’s existing global efforts and elevates Africa’s voice, creativity and ingenuity,” Osembo told Footwear News in an exclusive interview. “Africa’s position is more than just putting shoes on athletes with the proven expectation that they will stand on the podium as marketing tools. Athletes from Africa face many challenges that are easier to address if one makes a concerted effort to understand the context and challenge the status quo. On is already doing so much more for athletes beyond the podium.”

Osembo started her role in January and reports to Bianca Pestalozzi, On’s general manager of EMEA. Osembo is currently based in New York and is working with the team to determine the best location to move to within a year or so.

In an interview with FN, Pestalozzi praised Osembo’s experience at Enda noted her passion for “building lasting and equitable athlete relationships and authentically commercializing products in Africa for Africa.” She added that On is currently assessing the best way to expand in Africa by learning more about the market and its consumers.

“We see a long-term opportunity to build a meaningful presence and a community of fans in both East and West Africa, building on the success of our athletes, telling their stories and also establishing a commercial footprint for On in the region,” Pestalozzi said.

“Enda allowed me to understand, at a fast pace, every facet of the industry, from design, production, supply chain management, finance and accounting and marketing,” Osembo said. “Because of this, it has been relatively easy to get into step with the different teams at On and start the work of developing a holistic approach to Africa.”

As for why On was the right choice for her, Osembo was drawn to the brand’s strong culture, as well as its approach to business building in Africa, which she said aligned with her own vision and values.

“On sees Africa as an equal in the global economy without limiting its lens to qualitative economic data,” Osembo said. “On is also not playing lip service but actively investing in the infrastructure needed in Africa to elevate athletes and deliver impact right where it matters.”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — As he closes in on the Republican presidential nomination, former President Donald Trump made a highly unusual stop Saturday, hawking new Trump-branded sneakers at “Sneaker Con,” a gathering that bills itself as the “The Greatest Sneaker Show on Earth.”

Trump was met with loud boos as well as cheers at the Philadelphia Convention Center as he introduced what he called the first official Trump footwear.

The shoes, shiny gold high tops with an American flag detail on the back, are being sold as “Never Surrender High-Tops” for $399 on a new website that also sells other Trump-branded shoes and “Victory47” cologne and perfume for $99 a bottle. He’d be the 47th president if elected again.

The website says it has no connection to Trump’s campaign, though Trump campaign officials promoted the appearance in online posts.

The unannounced launch came a day after a judge in New York ordered Trump and his company to pay a whopping $355 million in penalties , finding that the former president lied about his wealth for years, scheming to dupe banks, insurers and others by inflating his wealth on financial statements.

That penalty came after Trump was ordered to pay an additional $83.3 million to the writer E. Jean Carroll for damaging her reputation after she accused him of sexual assault. With interest payments, Trump’s legal debts might now exceed a half-billion dollars — an amount it is unclear he can afford to pay.

Trump’s appearance was met with clashing boos from his detractors and chants of “USA!” from supporters who arrived at the sneaker event decked out in Trump gear. The dueling chants made it difficult, at times, to hear Trump speak.

Some had been given signs that read “SNEAKERHEADS LOVE TRUMP.”

“There’s a lot of emotion in this room,” Trump said of the reaction, after holding up and showing off a pair of gold shoes, then placing one on each side of his podium.

“This is something that I’ve been talking about for 12 years, 13 years. And I think it’s going to be a big success,” he said.

As he spoke, the smell of weed occasionally wafted through the room.

Some of those who attended said they were unaware Trump would be there, and continued to shop as a crowd gathered around the stage. Many in the audience said they were not from the city and instead hailed from nearby states and Washington, D.C.

The attendees skewed younger and more diverse than Trump’s usual rally crowds. Trump’s campaign is hoping he will be able to win over more young and minority voters, particularly young Black men, in a likely rematch against President Joe Biden in November.

This isn’t the first money-making venture Trump has announced since launching his third campaign for the White House in 2022. Trump last year reported making between $100,000 and $1 million from a series of digital trading cards that portrayed him, through photo editing, in a series of cartoon-like images, including as an astronaut, a cowboy and a superhero. He has also released books featuring photos of his time in office and letters written to him through the years.

Before he ran for office, Trump hawked everything from steaks to vodka to a venture he called “Trump University.”

The new sneaker website says it is run by CIC Ventures LLC, a company that Trump reported owning in his 2023 financial disclosure. The website states the new venture “is not political and has nothing to do with any political campaign.”

Still, it describes the sneakers as a limited-edition, numbered “true collector’s item” that is “Bold, gold, and tough, just like President Trump.”

“The Never Surrender sneakers are your rally cry in shoe form,” the description reads. “Lace-up and step out ready to conquer.”

A Trump spokesman did not respond to questions about the event, including whether Trump was paid to attend.

Among those in the crowd were Jonathen Santiago, 21, and Danea Mitchell, 20, Trump supporters who drove from Monroe County in the northeastern part of the state for the sneaker event. They said they were excited to see the former president and praised how he interacted with the crowd. They also had kind words for the sneakers.

“The red bottoms were a really nice touch,” Mitchell said.

She shrugged when asked about Trump’s legal troubles. “I think it’ll be an interesting four years if he’s found guilty, but I have no doubt he’ll be president,” she said.

Also in attendance was a group of “cheer moms” from New Jersey who said they were in town for a cheerleading event and decided to stop by for a chance to see Trump.

Karla Burke, 48, said she heard some people booing and making noise, but that most people around her had been supporters. “At the front was a different vibe,” she said.

As for Friday’s penalty in Trump’s civil fraud trial, Burke said it doesn’t change her support. “I think it was unfair,” she said. “They’re just going after him so he’s not the Republican candidate.”

Biden-Harris 2024 Communications Director Michael Tyler slammed the appearance, saying: “Donald Trump showing up to hawk bootleg Off-Whites is the closest he’ll get to any Air Force Ones ever again for the rest of his life.”

Trump flew from Philadelphia to Michigan, where he held a rally in the suburbs of Detroit and railed against Friday’s judgment , which he has vowed to appeal. Both Pennsylvania and Michigan are expected to be critical battleground states.

Target has launched a new budget brand that will offer shoppers low-cost clothes, electronics, beauty products, and home items.

Target said on Thursday that the brand, Dealworthy, will feature nearly 400 "everyday basics," with most items under $10 and some costing less than $1.

The range will include items such as undergarments, socks, toothbrushes, laundry detergent, and dish soap.

Target will also sell Dealworthy electronics, including phone cases and power cords, as well as kitchen and home items like paper plates, paper towels, and food containers.

Beauty products and toiletries on offer will include shampoo, dental floss, and cotton balls and swabs.

The retailer said that the first products would be available in stores and on its website on Sunday, February 18, with more being rolled out throughout 2024 and in early 2025.

The new brand could see Target competing more closely with dollar stores, many of which have scrapped the $1 price point in recent years amid soaring inflation. Dollar Tree , the last of the big three dollar store chains to stick to price tags of $1 and under, put its price up to $1.25 in late 2021.

Inflation has been cooling in recent months. But prices soared in the wake of the pandemic, forcing some shoppers to trade down by turning to cheaper brands, including retailers' own-branded products. Aldi , whose range is mostly made up of private-label brands, said that US sales soared in 2022.

"Consumers are still spending, but pressures like higher interest rates, the resumption of student loan repayments, increased credit card debt, and reduced savings rates, have left them with less discretionary income, forcing them to make trade-offs in their family budgets," Target CEO Brian Cornell told investors at the company's most recent earnings call in November.

Executives said that food and beverage prices were up by 25% on average compared to pre-pandemic and that customers had been "delaying their spending until the last moment" to stretch their budgets until the next paycheck, like waiting for the weather to turn cold before getting winter clothing.

Target makes $30 billion a year from own-brand products

Target told Business Insider that it would be selling a 200-pack of jumbo cotton balls for $1.99, a two-pack of toothbrushes for $0.99, and tablet stands and phone cases for $5.99 each.

"In each category they will be the lowest-priced item at the shelf," Rick Gomez, Target's chief food, essentials, and beauty officer, told Axios . The phone cases will cost half the price of the cheapest cases it sells by other brands, Target said in its press release.

"With Dealworthy, Target is offering more options at lower prices, starting at less than $1, while strengthening its portfolio of owned brands," the retailer said in a press release .

Target said that it makes more than $30 billion in annual sales from its owned brands. Target brought in revenues of $109 billion in 2022.

Switching plans could be a costly student loan forgiveness mistake for some borrowers.

The Biden administration has been encouraging borrowers to enroll in the SAVE plan, a new income-driven repayment option that officials have billed as the most affordable program ever. SAVE can provide borrowers with lower payments and a pathway to student loan forgiveness .

So far, close to seven million borrowers have enrolled in SAVE, according to Education Department data. This includes 2.8 million borrowers who enrolled for the first time, another 700,000 who voluntarily switched from another IDR plan, and other borrowers who were automatically converted to SAVE due to being previously enrolled in REPAYE, its predecessor. Nearly a third of Direct federal student loans (totalling approximately $374 billion) are now being repaid under the SAVE plan.

“Beyond being the most affordable student loan repayment plan ever available, the Biden-Harris Administration designed the SAVE Plan to put community college students and other low-balance borrowers on a faster track to debt forgiveness than ever before,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in a statement last month. “With lower monthly payments, protection from runaway interest, and faster timelines to debt forgiveness, President Biden’s SAVE plan is not only benefitting millions of current borrowers but also providing the students of today and tomorrow with a more affordable pathway to college degrees and credentials.”

There is little doubt that SAVE will be the most affordable repayment option for many borrowers, particularly those with relatively lower incomes compared to their balances. But for some, switching to SAVE from another IDR plan may not be the best move. Doing so could increase their monthly payments or lengthen their time before qualifying for student loan forgiveness.

Here are the details.

The SAVE program has many beneficial features. Like all IDR plans, SAVE calculates monthly payments using a formula applied to a borrower’s income and family size. Payments are recalculated every 12 months. After years in repayment, the borrower can qualify for student loan forgiveness.

But it’s the details that make SAVE more affordable than other IDR plans in most cases:

  • A higher poverty exclusion limit means that less of a borrower’s income is factored into the payment calculation. This results in a higher threshold before borrowers have an actual monthly payment, and a lower payment for everyone else.
  • A more favorable repayment formula applied to income above the poverty exclusion limit means lower payments for many borrowers, as well. And when a tweak to that formula goes into effect later this summer, borrowers with undergraduate student loans may see a further reduction in their monthly payments.
  • A generous interest subsidy will periodically waive any interest accrual that exceeds a borrower’s monthly payment, eliminating any future negative amortization (balance growth associated with payments being less than interest accrual). This is a benefit unique to SAVE and is not available to other IDR plans.

The student loan forgiveness term for SAVE is a bit complicated. Borrowers with only undergraduate student loans can receive loan forgiveness after 20 years in repayment, although it can be shortened to as little as 10 years for those with small initial starting balances. Those who have graduate school loans would be on a longer 25-year loan forgiveness term.

PAYE May Allow For Faster Student Loan Forgiveness And Lower Payments In Some Cases

The benefits of SAVE mean that it will be the best, most affordable IDR plan for many borrowers. But not all. In some cases, the Pay As You Earn plan (an older IDR option established in 2012) may be better. That’s because of two key features of PAYE.

First, PAYE has a 20-year student loan forgiveness term for all borrowers enrolled in this plan. That is particularly beneficial for those who have graduate school loans. Under SAVE, graduate school borrowers would not be eligible for student loan forgiveness until the 25-year mark. Those extra five years in repayment — potentially during a borrower’s peak earnings years — could be quite costly.

To illustrate, let’s take a single borrower with only graduate school loans, a family size of one, and an Adjusted Gross Income of $100,000. Under SAVE, the borrower would have payments of around $560 per month, while under PAYE, they would pay around $650 per month. SAVE is obviously cheaper — to the tune of nearly $22,000 over the course of 20 years. But the extra five years in repayment under SAVE’s 25-year loan forgiveness term would cost this borrower over $33,000, more than offsetting the savings associated with the lower monthly payments. And that assumes no increases in the borrower’s income.

A second benefit of PAYE that SAVE doesn’t have is a cap or limit on monthly payments. Under PAYE, if a borrower’s income gets to high, there is a ceiling on payments based on the amount that would have been required to pay off the loan balance over a 10-year term. PAYE payments would never be more than this amount. But SAVE has no such cap.

Take a borrower who has a total federal student loan balance of $50,000 at a 5.5% interest rate, and a current income of $70,000. Their SAVE payment would be around $310 per month, while their PAYE payment would be around $400 per month. If their income increases to, say, $120,000, their SAVE payment would increase to around $730 per month. But under PAYE, their payments would hit a cap of around $545 per month, based on the 10-year Standard plan. In this example, the borrower would actually have lower payments under PAYE than under SAVE. This is particularly relevant for borrowers who are pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness, where they must repay their loans under an IDR plan or 10-year Standard plan to continue making qualifying payments toward student loan forgiveness.

Importantly, not everyone qualifies for the PAYE plan. To be eligible, borrowers must have had no outstanding federal student loan balance as of October 1, 2007, and must have had a new federal loan disbursement on or after October 1, 2011.

ICR May Provide Lower Payments Than SAVE In Limited Circumstances

Similarly to PAYE, the Income Contingent Repayment plan (another IDR option) may provide more affordable student loan payments than SAVE in certain situations.

ICR is typically the most expensive IDR option. That’s because ICR has the lowest poverty exclusion limit, and a formula that requires borrowers to repay a substantial portion of their income — 20% — toward their student loans. As a result, ICR doesn’t make sense for most borrowers (Parent PLUS borrowers are an exception, as ICR may be the only IDR option for them).

But for borrowers with high income and a relatively low federal student loan balance, ICR can actually be more affordable than other IDR options. That’s because in those circumstances, their payments would be based on what the borrower would pay on a repayment plan with a fixed payment over the course of 12 years, adjusted according to their income, rather than the 20% formula.

For example, a single borrower with annual income of $100,000 and a federal student loan balance of only $30,000 at a 5.5% interest rate would pay around $560 per month under SAVE, but only $330 per month under ICR. As with PAYE, this may be relevant for those pursuing student loan forgiveness through the PSLF program, where repaying their loans under an IDR plan is typically required.

New Enrollments In ICR And PAYE Will Be Limited Soon

All of this matters because while historically borrowers have been permitted to switch IDR plans, that’s about to change. Starting in July of this year, the Education Department will be limiting new enrollments for student loan borrowers in the PAYE and ICR plans. Those who are currently repaying their loans under PAYE and ICR can remain in those plans. But borrowers who switch to SAVE from those plans will not be able to change their minds and return to PAYE or ICR after July 1, 2024.

Ultimately, the beneficial features of SAVE mean that for many borrowers, enrolling in SAVE is the best course of action resulting in lower payments, an end to negative amortization associated with interest accrual, and eventual student loan forgiveness. But for a subset of borrowers, changing IDR plans and enrolling in SAVE could be a big, irreversible mistake. It’s important to understand the benefits, drawbacks, and eligibility rules of each IDR plan to make an informed decision.
