Volunteer Opportunities at Libraries

close up of the 'volunteer' entry in a dictionary with the word 'volunteer' highlighted in green

The Cobb County Public Library Volunteer Program is vital to the mission of the library. The program is designed to enhance and expand library service to the community. Volunteers are advocates for quality library service. Their enthusiasm, support, and commitment make it possible for the library to meet the increasing library needs of our customers.

Every attempt is made to match opportunities with volunteers. However, library staff, instead of volunteers, must perform some jobs. Among these are storytimes and computer work involving patron records.

Please find below a list of volunteer positions and descriptions for each. Contact the library where you would like to work to see if opportunities are available.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the library must complete the application below. Please note that applicants age 17 and older must successfully pass a background check before being approved for volunteer service.

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old.

Court Ordered Community Service Workers

Court ordered community service workers (CSW) follow different procedures and policies than library volunteers. Not all branches in Cobb County Public Library (CCPL) accept community service workers and a short turnaround time-frame for completion of hours cannot be accommodated.

CCPL will only accept persons who are Cobb County residents, 18 years old or older, and mandated by a Cobb County Court to perform service. Please review our CSW Policy for a list of misdemeanor offenses that will be accepted for community service at the library. If interested and permitted to complete community service at a government institution, please complete the online application.

LEARN MORE ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE SENTENCING

Community service is a sentencing option that provides many benefits to the court, the participants and our community at large.

WHAT IS COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE

Courts can sentence individuals to perform community service hours as a condition of community

control (probation), as a sanction or in lieu of financial sanctions such as fines and fees. Community

service is uncompensated work at a non-profit or governmental organization that provides services to the community or its citizens. Agencies must agree to accept the offender; work must be supervised and documented in writing; and within a reasonable distance from an offender’s residence unless

transportation is provided. CCS staff ensure that placements meet these criteria and agency work sites

provide safe and appropriate work assignments so that clients can successfully complete their

community service requirements .

WHY USE COMMUNITY SERVICE SENTENCING

It provides the court with an option for indigent and low-income offenders unable to pay fines, costs, and fees.

It can be used as an effective and immediate sanction.

It enhances probation by requiring offenders to demonstrate responsible behavior .

It offers a cost-effective alternative to expensive jail time.

It is restitution to the community.

It makes productive use of an offender’s “free time.”

It is flexible and can be scheduled around an offender’s work, school, or family obligations.

It exposes offenders to positive role models in their community.

It encourages empathy to others through service to the community.

Some clients continue to volunteer at, or have been hired by the agency work site, after completing their community service.

MUST Neighborhood Pantry

Serving children and families in crisis.

MUST Neighborhood Pantry's mission is to eliminate hunger for at-risk students in local schools, giving them a greater opportunity to succeed in school and life. We partner with schools by providing food and toiletries to at risk students and families through our campus-based food pantry program. We work very closely with their school social workers, counselors and staff to identify children and families in crisis. Once a month, including the summer, families can come to the pantry and choose items their families need and enjoy. Below you will find more information about how you can assist these children and their families in your community.

Need groceries? Contact your child's school counselor or social worker to be considered for the Neighborhood Pantry program. The schools are responsible for selecting families who qualify.
