All Year Math Homework, 2nd Grade, All Standards

Show preview image 1

Description

I give my students homework every week where they practice what I teach. I usually go over the homework if we start a new standard. Each day they have to do one column for that day and on Monday's they have to fill in the number chart on the back. The homework covers all the standards and has several versions usually from simple to abstract. I grade homework every day and keep a tally chart of my students that need a small group review that day on how to solve it. I give those students their homework at the end to give them an opportunity to fix their mistakes. My students homework grade is that they solved it, not what percentage they have correct.

Included is the homework for all standards and each is comprised of 2 pages.

You can choose the homework in accordance to what you are teaching. The standards are always listed on the front in the first column. Extra workspace is created also on the bottom of the back page, since some word problems are lengthy. However, I have had visually and graphophonic impaired students and I just let them use a sperate sheet to solve their problems.

I hope this makes your life easier. I know it was hard to try to think of the homework every week. Additionally, I included a blank homework outline for you to use with anything I may not have addressed in this packet.

Also, I have always 4 days of homework, since I believe weekends are for families to enjoy each other. On weeks that we have less days in school, I tell my students that the extra days are extra credit, but not essential. Usually they do it, since extra credit means extra coins for the treasure box.

2nd Grade Homework

homework for 2nd standard

  • The general rule is 10 minutes of homework for every grade level.  That would be 20 minutes for 2 nd grade.  I don’t include reading at home when I’m talking about homework.  So I expect 20 minutes (or so) of homework and 20 minutes of at-home reading.
  • I only assign homework Monday-Thursday (again reading is not included in this).
  • No parent assignments.   If it’s a project that parents are going to have to orchestrate it’s not helping the kids.
  • The kids should be able to complete it as independently as possible.  I love the idea that parents sit with their children and help them finish their work each night, but with many families at our school that never happens.
  • Nothing on the homework is new material.  If I haven’t taught it, it doesn’t belong on a homework page.  The purpose is to reinforce what’s already been taught and to show parents what’s happening in class.  If a child is struggling on the homework (with content that should have been mastered) it’s a sign to parents and me that the child needs some support.
  • I don’t do a lot of worksheets in class.  This homework gives my students exposure to the format of many end-of-year test questions.
  • If they come to school without their homework, they finish it during morning recess.  They almost always finish it with at least 5 minutes to spare, so I know the assignments don’t take longer than 10-15 minutes.

But what does the research say?  Harris Copper, a psychology and neuroscience professor at Duke University and the nation’s leading expert on homework (what a boring job!), reviewed 100+ homework related studies from the past decade.

His findings?  Well, apparently homework in the elementary grades does little to help student achievement.  Kids who do their homework aren’t necessarily going to outperform their non-homework doing classmates.  In high school, it’s a different scenario, but for the little ones it isn’t that crucial.

“However, we support assigning homework to younger elementary-school children due to its potential long-term developmental impact,” Dr. Cooper says, “It helps elementary students develop proper study skills which, in turn, influence grades.”

And from Cathy Vatterott (former teacher, associate professor of education at the University of Missouri—St Louis, and author of Rethinking Homework) we find that the value of homework is in “reinforcing or practicing skills already learned and giving (teachers) feedback to check for understanding.”

Alright, well I’m not totally out in left field.  So what do I do?

On Monday 3 things go home:

  • Timed 1 minute fluency story (more about this here ).  This is the only homework that can’t be done without a parent or older sibling helping.  If it doesn’t come back to school at the end of the week, there is no consequence for the student because this is a parent that has dropped the ball, not the child.
  • Spelling practice (read about it here ).  To be completed a little at a time or all on Thursday night.  If this doesn’t come back to school on Friday morning, they must practice their spelling words 2 times during morning recess (it takes less than 5 minutes).
  • What we call a “half-sheet” because it’s a half-sheet.  Clever, right?  🙂   It’s a half-sheet of paper with language arts practice on one side and math on the other.  Some of my coworkers send all 3 half-sheets on Monday and give them the week to do it.  I send them one at a time and expect it back the next day.

We do 3 half-sheets a week (or less if it’s a short week).  I don’t send it home on Thursdays so they have time to finish up the spelling practice.

There are 5 main strands for language arts.

Hw1

The emphasis is on practicing vowel sounds, but there are also some consonant skills.  The sequence of phonics skills aligns with our morning work book practice.

Comprehension

Hw2

Covering topics from the common core like contractions, plurals, past tense, etc.  I also toss in some sight word review if it will fit on the page.

Sometimes the students are composing the writing.

Hw4

A lot of times students are asked to edit writing because that’s a big part of our end-of-year test and no matter how much writing we do in-class, the transfer of skills to the test format doesn’t happen automatically.

Hw5

This strand is pretty eclectic.  There’s practice with compound words and synonyms.  There’s also some word analogies, glossary practice, and collective noun review.  Sometimes they learn new words (using a modified Frayer model graphic organizer).

Hw6

These 5 language art strands cycle through every 5 days of the homework.  It’s the same with math.

Place Value

This is huge in the 2 nd grade common core for a reason.  A firm understanding of our base-10 system and how to use it to understand and solve problems is essential for more complex mathematics.  ESSENTIAL!

In the homework pages, the sequence of these skills follows the outline from Singapore math and the Learning Trajectories .  Are you familiar with the Trajectories?  A fabulous book!  Assuming you have $45 to spend (!!) it will change the way you teach math.

Anyway, the place value pages build on those ideas.  There’s practice of building numbers within ten.  Working with ones and tens, making numbers with hundreds, and using place value patterns to problem solve.

Hw8

What you won’t find are any pages with problems like this:

462                                                                                                                                                -209

I debated this for a while.  I used to have problems like that.  But here’s why I decided against it.

The common core says this for 2 nd grade:

Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction…

It says nothing about using the algorithm.  And while the algorithm (step-by-step adding the ones , regrouping a ten if necessary, adding the tens, etc.) isn’t the enemy, teaching it too early stops the development of deeper thinking.

So when students see problems written like this:

And, more importantly, when parents see problems written like that, the reaction is to follow the algorithm regardless of a student’s readiness or understanding.   I found that when I sent home problems like that, all of the amazing, creative thinking and problem solving perseverance that I’d nurtured like a rare orchid was crushed under the booted foot of, “Look what my mom showed me!”   No longer were they interested in how the solved the problem or why their strategy worked.  They just wanted to follow the steps and be done.

So, no more.

Hw9

  • Recognize what they’ve mastered and
  • Figure out how to master the rest.  Strategies, strategies, strategies!  All those great strategies we’ve learned in class (doubles +1, make a ten, etc.) get practiced here.

Problem Solving

Each problem solving page has 3 problems and plenty of work room.  Topics cover addition, subtraction (1 and 2-step problems), comparisons, multiplication, division, money, and writing their own story problems.

Even though there aren’t any 3-digit addition pages, there are plenty of story problems using 2 and 3-digit numbers.  Why?

Well, using larger numbers helps students solidify their base-10 understanding.  If they have to decompose 186 into 100+80+6 in order to figure out a problem, you can bet they’re really thinking about the numbers and how place value can help them find the answer.  Also, in a problem solving format, students are more likely to solve it in a way that makes sense rather than following meaningless steps.

Hw10

There’s a great article here if you’re curious about why I sometimes have kids write their own math problems.

Students get a chance to practice tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs, data tables, and line plots.

Hw11

I hadn’t done much with line plots before they were in the core.  I really enjoyed making some up for these homework pages.

Hw14

This is where you’ll find questions about telling time, counting coins, even and odd, greater than/less than, geometry, even more place value, measurement, and fractions.

Hw 13

Common Core State Standards Initiative

English Language Arts Standards

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the standards”) represent the next generation of K–12 standards designed to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life by the time they graduate from high school.

The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.

The standards establish guidelines for English language arts (ELA) as well as for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. Because students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, the standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.

The College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards form the backbone of the ELA/literacy standards by articulating core knowledge and skills, while grade-specific standards provide additional specificity. Beginning in grade 6, the literacy standards allow teachers of ELA, history/social studies, science, and technical subjects to use their content area expertise to help students meet the particular challenges of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language in their respective fields.

It is important to note that the grade 6–12 literacy standards in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects are meant to supplement content standards in those areas, not replace them. States determine how to incorporate these standards into their existing standards for those subjects or adopt them as content area literacy standards.

The skills and knowledge captured in the ELA/literacy standards are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature. Students will learn to use cogent reasoning and evidence collection skills that are essential for success in college, career, and life. The standards also lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person who is prepared for success in the 21 st century.

2nd Grade Reading Standards: What Your Child Needs to Know

homework for 2nd standard

After some requests from our clients, here is some information on 2nd-grade standards.  I hope you enjoy.

2nd-grade reading standards are designed to build on the skills that students learned in first grade and prepare them for the more complex texts they will encounter in later grades. The standards are aligned with the Common Core State Standards, which provide a framework for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. By the end of second grade, students are expected to be able to read and comprehend a range of texts, including stories, poems, and informational texts.

Overview of 2nd Grade Reading Standards

2nd-grade reading standards focus on building foundational skills that will help students become proficient readers in the future. Students will learn to read fluently and with comprehension, and they will be able to analyze and interpret a variety of texts.

One of the primary goals of 2nd-grade reading standards is to help students develop a love of reading. Students will be exposed to a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. They will learn to read independently and with a partner, and they will be encouraged to read for pleasure both in and out of the classroom.

Another important aspect of 2nd-grade reading standards is building vocabulary. Students will learn new words through a variety of methods, including context clues, word families, and sight words. They will also be introduced to new concepts and ideas, expanding their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Finally, 2nd-grade reading standards focus on comprehension. Students will learn to identify main ideas, make predictions, and draw conclusions. They will also be able to compare and contrast texts, and they will be able to identify cause-and-effect relationships.

By the end of second grade, students should be able to read and understand a variety of texts with ease.

Overall, 2nd-grade reading standards provide a strong foundation for future reading success. By focusing on building foundational skills, developing a love of reading, building vocabulary, and improving comprehension, students will be well-prepared for reading challenges in the years to come.

10 overall standards for 2nd-grade reading and comprehension are:

  • Reading accurately and fluently with understanding
  • Reading grade-level text with appropriate pace and expression
  • Recognizing and reading common sight words
  • Using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words
  • Identifying the main idea and supporting details in a text
  • Describing characters, settings, and events in a story
  • Making predictions and inferences based on text
  • Summarizing the main points of a story or informational text
  • Comparing and contrasting information from different sources
  • Using illustrations and text features to enhance understanding of a text.

Phonics and Word Recognition

Phonics and word recognition are important skills for 2nd-grade students to develop as they learn to read. Phonics involves understanding the relationship between letters and sounds, while word recognition involves recognizing words by sight.

One way to help students develop phonics skills is through explicit instruction in letter-sound relationships. This can involve teaching students to recognize and produce the sounds associated with each letter of the alphabet, as well as common letter combinations such as “sh” and “ch”. Teachers can also use word sorts and other activities to help students practice identifying words with similar sound patterns.

In addition to phonics instruction, 2nd-grade students should also be exposed to a variety of texts to help develop their word recognition skills. This can include both fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as poetry and other forms of literature. Teachers can also use word walls and other visual aids to help students recognize and remember common high-frequency words.

Overall, a balanced approach to phonics and word recognition instruction can help 2nd-grade students develop the foundational skills they need to become proficient readers.

Fluency is an essential component of reading comprehension. It refers to the ability to read text accurately, quickly, and with expression. 2nd-grade students are expected to read with increasing accuracy, rate, and expression. They should be able to read grade-level texts fluently and with comprehension.

To assess fluency, teachers may use various measures such as oral reading fluency, running records, or timed reading assessments. These assessments help teachers identify areas of strength and weakness in a student’s fluency skills and provide targeted instruction to improve fluency.

The 2nd-grade reading words per minute (WPM) standards vary depending on the school district and state. The benchmark WPM for 2nd-grade students is 90 words per minute with 90% accuracy.

To improve fluency, teachers may use various strategies such as repeated reading, choral reading, partner reading, and listening to fluent reading. Repeated reading involves reading a text multiple times to improve accuracy, speed, and expression. Choral reading involves reading a text together as a group to improve expression and rhythm. Partner reading involves taking turns reading a text with a partner to provide feedback and support. Listening to fluent reading involves listening to a fluent reader read a text aloud while following along in the text to improve comprehension and fluency.

In summary, fluency is a crucial component of reading comprehension. 2nd-grade students are expected to read fluently with increasing accuracy, rate, and expression. Teachers may use various assessments and strategies to improve fluency skills and support students in becoming proficient readers.

Vocabulary Acquisition and Use

2nd-grade students are expected to develop their vocabulary acquisition and use skills which will help them to understand and communicate more effectively. The following are some of the key areas of focus for vocabulary acquisition and use in second grade:

  • Context Clues: Students will learn to use context clues to determine the meaning of words in a text. They will be taught to look for clues in the surrounding words and sentences to help them determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
  • Prefixes and Suffixes: Students will learn to recognize and use common prefixes and suffixes to help them understand the meaning of new words. For example, they will learn that “un-” means “not” and “re-” means “again.”
  • Multiple-Meaning Words: Students will learn that some words have more than one meaning, and they will be taught to use context clues to determine which meaning is being used in a particular sentence.

2nd-grade students will also be expected to use new vocabulary words in their writing and speaking. They will be taught to use words they have learned in context, and to use them correctly. Students will also learn to use synonyms and antonyms to expand their vocabulary and to express themselves more precisely.

Overall, the goal of vocabulary acquisition and use in second grade is to help students become more confident and effective communicators. By developing their vocabulary skills, students will be better equipped to understand and use language in a variety of contexts.

Reading Comprehension: Literature

Reading comprehension is an essential skill that students must develop to become successful readers. Students in the second grade are expected to demonstrate comprehension of literature by identifying the main idea, characters, setting, and plot of a story. They should also be able to make connections between the story and their own experiences, as well as identify the author’s purpose.

One way to help students improve their reading comprehension skills is to encourage them to ask questions before, during, and after reading. This strategy can help students focus on the text and make connections between their own experiences and the story. Teachers can also use graphic organizers, such as story maps and character webs, to help students visualize the story and understand the relationships between characters and events.

Another effective strategy for improving reading comprehension is to use read-alouds. During a read-aloud, the teacher reads a story aloud to the students while they follow along in their own copies of the book. This strategy can help students develop their listening skills and improve their understanding of the story. Teachers can also use read-alouds to model fluent reading and emphasize important reading strategies, such as making predictions and asking questions.

Overall, developing reading comprehension skills is essential for success in school and in life. By providing students with opportunities to practice these skills, teachers can help them become confident, engaged readers who can understand and enjoy a wide variety of literature.

Reading Comprehension: Informational Text

Second graders are expected to develop their reading comprehension skills for informational text. This includes understanding the main idea and key details of a text, identifying the author’s purpose, and making inferences based on the text.

Students should be able to use text features such as headings, subheadings, and bolded words to help them understand the text. They should also be able to compare and contrast information from multiple sources on the same topic.

Teachers can help students develop their reading comprehension skills by providing a variety of texts on different topics and encouraging them to ask questions and make connections to their own experiences. It is also important to model and scaffold the strategies for understanding informational text.

Overall, second graders should be able to read and understand a variety of informational texts with increasing independence and proficiency.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

Second grade students must be able to integrate knowledge and ideas from various sources to build a deeper understanding of the text. This includes analyzing the relationships between characters, events, and ideas in a story and making connections between different texts.

Students are encouraged to use evidence from the text to support their understanding and to make predictions about what might happen next. They are also expected to compare and contrast different versions of the same story, identifying similarities and differences between them.

One way teachers can support students in developing these skills is by using graphic organizers, such as Venn diagrams or story maps, to help students visualize the connections between different elements of a story. Teachers can also use read-alouds and class discussions to model how to make inferences and draw conclusions from the text.

Another important aspect of integrating knowledge and ideas is understanding the author’s purpose and point of view. 2nd-grade students are expected to identify the author’s purpose for writing a text and to recognize when the author is expressing a particular point of view. Teachers can help students develop these skills by asking them to identify key words and phrases that reveal the author’s purpose or point of view and by providing opportunities for students to write from different perspectives.

Assessments and Resources

Assessing student progress is a crucial part of ensuring that they are meeting the 2nd-grade reading standards. Teachers use a variety of assessments to monitor student progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. These assessments include:

  • Oral reading fluency assessments
  • Reading comprehension assessments
  • Phonics assessments
  • Sight word assessments

Resources to support 2nd-grade reading instruction are widely available. Many publishers offer reading programs specifically designed to meet 2nd-grade standards. These programs typically include a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, that are appropriate for 2nd-grade readers. In addition, many online resources are available to support reading instruction, including:

  • Reading comprehension websites
  • Phonics games and activities
  • Online reading libraries

Teachers may also use various instructional materials, such as anchor charts and graphic organizers, to support student learning. These materials can help students understand key reading concepts and strategies, and can be particularly helpful for struggling readers.

2nd-grade reading standards are crucial in ensuring that students develop a strong foundation in reading and comprehension skills. These standards provide a roadmap for teachers to ensure that students are on track to achieve reading proficiency by the end of 2nd grade.

By mastering these standards, students can read fluently, comprehend their reading, and develop critical thinking skills. It is important to note that these standards are not meant to be a one-size-fits-all approach but rather a guide for teachers to tailor their instruction to meet the needs of each student.

Teachers play a critical role in helping students achieve these standards. They must provide a supportive and engaging learning environment that encourages students to read and develop a love for reading. This can be achieved using various teaching strategies, such as read-alouds, shared reading, and independent reading.

Overall, the 2nd-grade reading standards are an essential component in developing a student’s reading skills. By providing a clear set of expectations for teachers and students, these standards help to ensure that all students can become proficient readers.

Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade. In California, the State Board of Education decides on the standards for all students, from kindergarten through high school.

Since 2010, a number of states across the nation have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

The California Department of Education helps schools make sure that all students are meeting the standards. Below you will find information about the standards and the CCSS-related activities taking place in California.

See which NATO countries spend less than 2% of their GDP on defense

homework for 2nd standard

Donald Trump said over the weekend that he would encourage Russia to attack “delinquent” NATO allies that, in his judgment, spend too little on defense.

His remarks shocked leaders on both sides of the Atlantic — and mischaracterized how the 31-member alliance works.

NATO member nations all make payments to cover the operating expenses of the organization, which was founded in the aftermath of World War II to help Western Europe counter the Soviet Union with help from Canada and the United States. But they don’t pay membership fees to remain in the alliance, so there’s no delinquency to speak of.

Countries do, however, commit to spending at least 2 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense each year, with the goal of ensuring the alliance’s military readiness and deterring any potential attacks. The commitment is a guideline, not a requirement , that has been in place for nearly two decades.

Last year, 11 countries met or exceeded that target, according to NATO statistics. The rest spent smaller portions of their GDP on defense. (Iceland, the only member state with no armed forces, is omitted from the data set.)

Most of the countries that spent beyond the 2 percent mark either share a border with Russia or sit near the front lines of the Ukraine war. Trump’s insinuation that they’re not paying their share is false.

Poland — which shares part of its northern border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and a long stretch of its southeastern border with Ukraine — spent a greater share of its GDP on defense last year than any other member state, at 3.9 percent.

The United States ranked second, at 3.49 percent. But in raw numbers, the $860 billion U.S. defense budget is more than double that of all other NATO allies combined.

Other member states spending more than 2 percent of their GDP include Estonia, Lithuania, Romania and NATO’s newest member, Finland, which joined the alliance last year. (It’s worth noting that most of the big spenders have national laws or policies that require 2 percent defense spending in accordance with NATO’s goals.)

Countries farther from Russia were more likely to spend below the 2 percent guideline. Some — including Germany, Italy and Canada — spent considerably under that target, despite having large economies and GDPs topping $1 trillion. Others, such as Luxembourg, may struggle to meet the threshold because of the limited size of their militaries and defense industries.

Trudeau told NATO that Canada will never meet spending goal, Discord leak shows

Most NATO allies are spending a greater share of their GDP on defense than they were in 2014. That year, Russia invaded the Crimean Peninsula and annexed it, inflaming tensions in Eastern Europe and prompting NATO to double down on its 2 percent spending goal.

At the time, only three allies were meeting that target. The number increased to seven in 2022. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February of that year, defense spending spiked in several countries.

Poland again topped the list, with its defense spending jumping from 2.4 percent of its GDP to 3.9 percent. In total, Poland spent more than $29 billion on defense last year, nearly $12 billion more than it spent in 2022 and three times what it spent a decade ago. France, Slovakia, Hungary and several others also ratcheted up defense spending after the Russian invasion.

Earlier this year, Turkey voted in favor of Sweden’s membership after months of delay. Pending Hungary’s ratification, Sweden is expected to join NATO this year as the 32nd member, and has committed to spending 2.1 percent of its GDP.

Some member states are spending more but have yet to exceed the 2 percent mark. Others have flatlined. But the pressure to ramp up defense spending hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Following Trump’s remarks, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday pledged to meet NATO’s 2 percent goal. “That is urgently needed,” Scholz said. “Because as harsh as this reality is, we do not live in times of peace.”

Why US economy is powering ahead of Europe's

  • Published 13 February

Shopper in a mall

While countries around the world have struggled to recover from the economic setbacks brought on by the pandemic, one has emerged particularly strong.

With a fast-growing economy, a strong labour market and falling inflation, the US has outpaced its counterparts in Europe and elsewhere.

In terms of GDP, it posted a 3.3% gain in the fourth quarter of 2023, far exceeding economists' expectations of 2%.

That put the US at 2.5% over the course of the year, outpacing all other advanced economies and on track to do so again in 2024.

"The US is holding up much better than other countries," said Ryan Sweet, Chief US Economist, Oxford Economics. "It seems like the engine of the US economy continues to hum along where it's sputtering in other nations."

Chart showing US growth v other countries

Experts say that there are several reasons why the US is outperforming other nations.

1. Pouring trillions into the economy

When the Covid-19 pandemic slowed in-person work and social life to a halt, countries had to grapple with how to support their stuck-at-home citizenry - including many who lost their jobs or couldn't work.

In March 2020, Congress rushed to pass a $2.2tn economic stimulus bill that sent cash into the pockets of American workers, families, and businesses. Two more pieces of legislation followed to keep small businesses afloat and workforces employed.

This was the largest influx of federal money into the US economy in history. Some $5tn flowed to everyone from individuals making an extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits to state and local transit agencies strapped for cash without commuters.

  • US economy sees surprisingly strong growth

"I think there was a whole generation of policymakers that came out of 2008 and 2009 with the lesson that if you don't go big and go bold, the problems last for a long time," said Aaron Terrazas, chief economist at Glassdoor.

"If you're tentative, you prolong the pain. So I think that's one reason why the fiscal response was so much more forceful this time."

That stimulus is still being credited with sustaining consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of economic activity. That capacity to spend despite high inflation has been a buoy.

Shoppers in Brooklyn

Some of the money put into households' pockets ended up in excess savings, said Ryan Sweet, a war chest for Americans to tap into when they need it.

The size of the US rescue deal dwarfed what other countries did, although some like Japan, Germany and Canada also went big.

European countries have a more robust social safety net than the US and were able to adapt existing programmes without increasing spending. But this short-term advantage could not make up for the huge gap in stimulus size.

2. A flexible jobs market

High inflation has been a painful experience for many Americans and has shaped their view of how the economy is faring. But a strong jobs market has helped disposable income, which is the engine behind consumer spending.

The unemployment rate in the US has been below 4% since February 2022, which is on a par with historic lows. And while prices climbed steeply, real wages have risen too. Low-income households have seen some of the strongest real wage growth.

The US has also enjoyed a productivity spike in 2023, growing at its fastest pace in years.

Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, points to the flexible labour laws which allowed companies to slash workforces at the start of the pandemic. This produced short-term pain for workers but allowed companies to adapt to the moment and invest in new technologies.

She cited the example of hotels, which laid off workers and haven't hired back to pre-pandemic levels.

"They've simply changed a lot. They've introduced self-checkouts and mobile check-in technology. They've reduced the frequency of room cleaning, they've eliminated room service, because now customers tend to prefer to use Uber Eats anyway, and pick up orders and deliveries."

Hotels have become lighter and leaner and less personnel intensive, she said, a shift that meant they lived on which, in the longer term, benefits workers.

Jobs fair in Los Angeles

The US enjoys another advantage - an ability to resupply its labour market, especially through immigration at a time when the retirement of the baby boomer generation has slowed population growth.

The European approach favoured paying companies to keep workers on their payrolls when lockdowns crippled businesses. The UK furlough scheme paid employees 80% of their wages and lasted more than 18 months.

The US had more severe unemployment as a result but laid-off American workers were eligible for newly-expanded unemployment benefits, which sent cash directly into pockets.

3. Energy (in)dependence

The US is a net exporter of energy and experts say that's helped the US economy's strength.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and energy prices soared, Europe absorbed the impact much more than the US. Germany, a major European manufacturing hub, imported much of its natural gas from Russia via its Nord Stream pipeline. Its productivity took a hit.

Higher energy prices pushed up inflation in Europe, in what experts called a "double-shock" - the pandemic and then Ukraine.

The impact of the Ukraine war on energy prices was a lot worse in Europe than in the US, said Ben Westmore, who oversees surveillance of the US economy for the OECD.

Gas prices in Europe between early 2021 and 2022 shot up by something close to 20%, he says, whereas in the US, it was only 3-4%.

He pointed out that European countries have seen not only a bigger increase in prices, but also a greater propensity for businesses to pass them on to consumers.

"Both of these factors have helped U.S. inflation moderate to a faster extent than in many countries, especially Europe," he said.

homework for 2nd standard

NASA is seeking applicants to participate in its next simulated one-year Mars surface mission to help inform the agency’s plans for human exploration of the Red Planet. The second of three planned ground-based missions called CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) is scheduled to kick off in spring 2025.

Each CHAPEA mission involves a four-person volunteer crew living and working inside a 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The habitat, called the Mars Dune Alpha, simulates the challenges of a mission on Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. Crew tasks include simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, exercise, and crop growth.

NASA is looking for healthy, motivated U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are non-smokers, 30-55 years old, and proficient in English for effective communication between crewmates and mission control. Applicants should have a strong desire for unique, rewarding adventures and interest in contributing to NASA’s work to prepare for the first human journey to Mars.

The deadline for applicants is Tuesday, April 2.

https://chapea.nasa.gov/

Crew selection will follow additional standard NASA criteria for astronaut candidate applicants. A master’s degree in a STEM field such as engineering, mathematics, or biological, physical or computer science from an accredited institution with at least two years of professional STEM experience or a minimum of one thousand hours piloting an aircraft is required. Candidates who have completed two years of work toward a doctoral program in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, completed a medical degree, or a test pilot program will also be considered. With four years of professional experience, applicants who have completed military officer training or a bachelor of science degree in a STEM field may be considered.

Compensation for participating in the mission is available. More information will be provided during the candidate screening process.

As NASA works to establish a long-term presence for scientific discovery and exploration on the Moon through the Artemis campaign, CHAPEA missions provide important scientific data to validate systems and develop solutions for future missions to the Red Planet. With the first CHAPEA crew more than halfway through their yearlong mission, NASA is using research gained through the simulated missions to help inform crew health and performance support during Mars expeditions.

Under NASA’s  Artemis  campaign, the agency will establish the foundation for long-term scientific exploration at the Moon, land the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut on the lunar surface, and prepare for human expeditions to Mars for the benefit of all.

United racked up a fifth straight win in all competitions on Sunday but made hard work of their 2-1 victory against Luton after Hojlund had struck twice in the opening seven minutes. The opener came just 37 seconds after kick-off and saw the 21-year-old replace Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock as the youngest player to score in six straight Premier League matches. United had never gone ahead away in the Premier League quicker than that, nor had they moved 2-0 up on the road as early as they did when Hojlund then chested in Alejandro Garnacho's volley.

But Luton have made life hard for the biggest clubs at Kenilworth Road and this was no different, with Carlton Morris pulling one back in the 14th minute. Rob Edwards' side were reinvigorated by that goal and constantly unsettled United, who were fortunate not to see Casemiro sent off for two bookings before his half-time substitution. A breathless second period followed but somehow there was no more goals, with Ross Barkley seeing a stoppage-time header hit the bar for the hosts.

FT: Luton 1-2 Man United

And United survive!

Madness that it was that nervy for them, after such an impressive start.

Luton refused to give up though and threw everything at it, falling just short in the end.

Luton 1-2 Man United

90+4 mins: OFF THE BAR!

One final corner for Luton, Barkley gets up at the near post and his header flicks off the top of the woodwork!

90+2 mins: It’s a flurry of late corners for Luton. Still the ball in isn’t good enough though.

Garnacho is away on the break, Rashford and Fernandes up with him.

It’s a lovely move, Garnacho’s shot deflected behind for a corner. That will do for United.

90 mins: Here we go, Luton corner coming up. Need to make the most of this.

It’s absolutely woeful! Fernandes clears it away at the near post.

Four minutes added on - that feels harsh. Onana has wasted that himself.

88 mins: Yet another big chance for United to finally put this match to bed.

Fernandes is in on goal, drags his shot inches wide of the far post. Had to score really... again.

85 mins: Final decision for Luton hasn’t been good enough.

Ogbene has plenty of team-mates to pick out in the box, but cuts onto his left foot and smacks an effort over the bar.

Amrabat on for United, Hojlund off. Not exactly like-for-like.

82 mins: Lindelof booked for a bit of a wild hack - got nowhere near the ball.

Lokonga then wastes another promising move, blazing over from 25 yards out. Poor choice.

80 mins: Hojlund the latest to be denied by Kaminski, who has had a busy old afternoon.

Plenty of saves, spent a lot of the match rushing off his line to varying degrees of success... certainly hasn’t been boring!

76 mins: Mainoo slides in, looks a good tackle but the whistle goes. And a yellow card - very harsh.

Barkley clips the free-kick to the back post, Evans up well to head it out.

Luton put it back in, great block from Varane to deny Osho. That was nearly the moment.

73 mins: It’s now 16 shots for Luton, 18 for United.

The visitors have come through their rocky spell and are looking more in control. Luton need to find a second wind from somewhere.

UK middle classes ‘struggling despite incomes of up to £60,000 a year’

Insecure jobs and high housing costs make it hard to maintain decent living standard, says abrdn Financial Fairness Trust

Britain’s insecure jobs market and high housing costs are leading to the growth of a precarious middle class struggling to maintain a decent living standard on household incomes as high as £60,000 a year, a report has said.

A study released by abrdn Financial Fairness Trust, a research body set up by the fund manager , said the uncertain nature of work meant there was a one in three chance that someone earning a middle income today would not be doing so next year.

The report – Caught in the Middle – said that problems of middle-class insecurity were especially acute for single parents, with those in employment more likely than not to be in an insecure job.

Donald Hirsch, a policy adviser at the FFT and one of the report’s authors, said 20% of those in the middle fifth of the income distribution were struggling to pay for food and other essentials. “It is people earning between £30,000-£60,000 a year, depending on the type of household, people who you would expect to be doing OK,” he said.

“Being on a middle income does not make people secure. In the present cost of living crisis, the vulnerabilities of people on modest incomes have become more apparent. They face significant uncertainties, and are rightly encouraged to save both for rainy days and their retirement,” Hirsch said.

“Yet if they are also paying off student debt and have high housing costs, it becomes difficult to maintain a decent living standard today – even at the minimum level often associated with lower income groups.”

The report defines work as “insecure” if someone is either self-employed or has been working for their present employer for less than two years, or less than three years if working part-time. It also classifies very low-paid full-time jobs – where pay is less than half the full-time average – as insecure.

Working-age adults became more likely to be in work, but less likely to be in secure work, during the 2010s.

Worklessness – combining unemployment and economic inactivity – fell from 20% to 18% over this period, but secure employment also fell, by 1.5 percentage points, while insecure employment rose by four percentage points.

Hirsch said the problems of the precarious middle classes were not as severe as for those further down the income scale, but that it was important for the government to act to tackle growing insecurity.

“Measures to improve predictability, stability and the right to flexible working had been promised for the present parliament, but were not delivered. In the coming parliament, this should be a priority.”

The study found that more than one in four people in the middle of the income distribution were not in secure employment, and one in seven were not in secure housing. One in three of those in the middle quintile in a given year will have slipped down to a lower quintile the following year.

While financial pressures on middle income families were not new, some issues had become more important. Childcare costs had outstripped other prices and earnings; housing had in many cases become less affordable; student debt had increased significantly and pension savings were becoming more important to retirement security.

“Some groups are clearly more vulnerable than others. Single adults and lone parents have less security and resilience than couples. People in privately rented accommodation face the double disadvantage of high housing costs and low security,” the report said. “Younger adults are more likely than older ones to have insecure work, higher housing costs and be repaying student debt.”

In addition to measures to provide greater employment security, the report said more needed to be done to boost the protection given to tenants in the private rented sector. The renters reform bill – which is going through parliament – was an important step, the report said.

It argued that more should be done to ensure the rising earnings of those on middle incomes were not cancelled out by childcare costs, and to increase the amount of contributions made by employers and government to pensions.
