The Trash-Talking Meaning Behind “Give It to Me” by Timbaland

by Jacob Uitti September 5, 2023, 1:59 pm

In the 2000s, super producer Timbaland was having a moment. Not only had the beatmaker risen to fame thanks to his collaborative partnerships, first with R&B star Aaliyah and then with rapper Missy Elliott, but he became an international sensation when he started working with pop star Justin Timberlake.

So, what did Timbaland do? He continued to expand, releasing his popular sophomore album, Shock Value , in 2007 and the follow-up, Shock Value II , in 2009. But it was on the 2007 offering that Timbaland enjoyed one of his biggest successes, the single, “Give It to Me,” featuring Timberlake and smooth singer Nelly Furtado.

But what is the story behind the song? Let’s dive in and find out that answer and the meaning of the track, below.

Genre-Bending

Timbaland is nothing if not versatile. Known as a rap producer who has worked with the likes of Missy and Jay Z, Timbaland is more than a single-genre star. “Give It to Me” was a crossover pop hit, with big rhythms and big melodies. On the song, Timbaland seems to rap, but he’s also singing, bookended by Furtado and Timberlake, two of the era’s biggest hitmakers.

Trash Talking

Each verse in the song is trash talk. The now-51-year-old Virginia-born Timothy Zachery Mosley (aka Timbaland) calls out producer Scott Storch in his verse. Storch, who previously worked with Timbaland and is known for collabs with Lil Wayne and 50 Cent, somehow got in Timbo’s cross-hairs.

Though Timbaland never calls out Storch by name, those in the know knew it was a diss against Timbaland’s former colleague. ,

When Timbo’ is in the party everybody put up their hands I get a half a mill’ for my beats, you get a couple gra-a-and Never gon’ see the day that I ain’t got the upper hand I’m respected from Californ-I-A way down to Japan I’m a real producer, and you just a piano man Your songs don’t top the charts, I heard ’em, I’m not a fa-a-an Niggas talkin’ greasy, I’m the one that gave them they chance Somebody need to tell ’em that they can’t do it like I can

In these lines, Timbaland is saying Storch isn’t a “real producer” and that even though Timbo gave Storch an early chance, the latter is coming back and “talkin’ greasy.”

In subsequent interviews, including with MTV News , Timbaland confirmed that he was talking about his former protege, with their beef beginning over a dispute regarding writing credits for Timberlake’s 2003 hit, “Cry Me a River.” For that song, Storch said he was the real person behind the track.

Rumors of the trash-talking don’t end there. Many fans have said that Furtado’s lines are directed at pop star Fergie, though Furtado denied those accusations.

I’m the type of girl that’ll look you dead in the eye, eye I’m real as they come if you don’t know why I’m fly-y-y-y-y I seen you to try switch it up, but girl, you ain’t that dope I’m the Wonder Woman, let me go get my rope I’m a supermodel and mommy, sĂ, mami Amnesty International, got Bangkok to Montauk on lock Love my ass and my abs in the video called “Promiscuous” My style is ri-dic-dic-diculous-ulous-ulous

When asked on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show if the lyrics were about Fergie, Furtado said, “Ummm, no,” she said. “I think Tim[baland] and I just got a little cheeky and we were like, let’s do a song about how great we are.”

Prince, Too?

As for Timberlake, his lyrics, fans say, seem to be directed at Prince. Could this be true? Well, when Timberlake released his hit “SexyBack” in 2006, the Purple One took a bit of an issue with the song, saying , “For whoever is claiming they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!”

So, biting back, Timberlake took aim in his lyrics for the song, saying,

Could you speak up and stop mu-mumbling? I don’t think you came in clear When you’re sittin’ on the top, it’s hard to hear you from way up here Now I saw you tryna act cute on TV, “Just let me clear the air” We missed you on the charts last week, damn, that’s right, you wasn’t there If s-sexy never left, then why is everybody on my shi-i-it? Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it So if you see us in the club, go on and walk the other way ‘Cause our run will never be over, not at least until we say

Timberlake was white hot at the moment. But still others believe he was also taking aim at former girlfriend Britney Spears’ then-new man, dancer Kevin Federline , who had been in the news at the time talking smack about Timberlake, who had recently released several songs bashing Britney’s promiscuity, including “Cry Me a River” and “What Goes Around
 Comes Around.”

Final Thoughts

In the end, this smash club hit, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, was both the fire and the smoke. It was a jam many shook hips to and one that caused rifts in the world of popular music. It’s a weapon and a relief. It’s many things at once. Yes, it’s Timbaland’s calling card.

Happy Leap Day Birthday to Me (See You Again in Four Years)

Yes, our driver’s licenses give our real birthday. No, you’re not the first person to joke that we’re too young to drink or drive. A Feb. 29 baby demystifies the quadrennial calendar quirk.

A close-up of a calendar page shows a square with the number “29” in it and a message that says “Leap Year Day.”

By Remy Tumin

Remy Tumin was born on leap day. In off years, she celebrates on Feb. 28.

My mom tells the story the same way every year.

I was two weeks late and my heartbeat had slowed briefly, as it turns out, because I was squeezing my umbilical cord, and the obstetrician said it was time for my grand arrival. So when I was born on the evening of Feb. 29, my grandfather took partial credit.

“I knew she would do it,” he said.

He, too, was a leap day baby, more than 60 years my senior.

The calendar accounts for Earth’s imperfect rotation by adding an extra day in February every four years. It is a science developed over millenniums, dating back to the ancient Egyptians, and one that creates a birthday conundrum for an estimated 5 million people worldwide. The chances of being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461.

Approximately 362,900 Americans have a Feb. 29 birthday, according to the Social Security Administration. By comparison, about 1.6 million can say they were born on March 1.

Some might find the idea of a Feb. 29 birthday peculiar, even undesirable. We think it’s special. People who celebrate a birthday every year? We call them “annuals.”

Yes, our driver’s licenses give our real birth date. No, you’re not the first person to joke that we’re too young to drink or drive. Here’s what else to know about leap year.

Why do we have leap years?

The most common explanation is to keep the calendar in step with the seasons. In science class you might have learned that it takes the Earth 365 days to orbit the sun, but it actually takes about 365.25 days. Adding an extra day once very four years keeps it balanced.

Without leap years, which are also known as bissextile years , “eventually summer would be in November or December 100 years from now,” said Robert C. Washington III, a graduate researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and a Ph.D. student at Howard University.

By the 16th century, Easter kept drifting later into the year. Pope Gregory XIII introduced his own system to keep Easter in March or April, moving the calendar from the Julian system (which adds a leap year every four years) to the Gregorian (which adds a leap year every four years, except in century years that are not divisible by 400; for example, there was no leap day in 1900, but there was one in 2000).

Duncan Steel, the author of “Marking Time: The Epic Quest to Invent the Perfect Calendar,” said the Romans chose to add the extra day in February for two reasons: They considered it to be an unlucky month, and it was the month that came before Easter.

“It’s been a matter of gradual refinement,” he said.

A more accurate system, he said, is the Jalali calendar from Iran, which has eight leap years in a 33-year cycle.

‘Leaplings’ find creative ways to celebrate.

In leap years, we go hard.

Anthony, Texas, and Anthony, N.M., which share a state line, have been known for decades as the “Leap Year Capital of the World.” A leap year baby who lived in the Texas town persuaded the governors of both states to declare it so in 1988 after a flurry of Feb. 29 birthdays.

The community has celebrated leap day with a parade between the two towns, but this year, the Texas side is hosting a weekend-long festival .

Others prefer to head to sea. For the second consecutive leap day (that is to say, the first one since 2020), Karen Tinsley-Sroka has organized a cruise for leap day babies .

“Over the course of my life, I had only met three leap day babies, and here I was surrounded with 78 of them,” she said.

So-called off years present a different issue: When to celebrate?

“I love when people ask me, ‘Do you celebrate on Feb. 28 or March 1?’” said Raenell Dawn, a co-founder of Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies . “I get to tell them, ‘Both, because I can.’ But I’m a February baby; I was not born in March.”

An informal poll of the society’s members showed about a 50-50 split between the two dates, said Ms. Dawn, who is celebrating her “Sweeter 16” by turning 64 this year.

‘This is a fun birthday.’

Eric Grossman, an obstetrician in southern New Jersey who was born on Feb. 29, estimates he’s delivered about a dozen leap day babies over the past 20 years, including two sisters born four years apart .

“A lot of people are anxious about the idea of having a leap day baby,” he said. “I try to reassure parents that your kid is not going to know any different. This is a fun birthday.”

He helps by sharing memories of his own childhood.

“I would get a birthday cake on the 28th and I would get a birthday on the first day of March,” he said. “It’s better to do it twice.”

What kinds of issues do leap day babies face?

From time to time, leap day babies can face administrative headaches. Sometimes Feb. 29 does not appear in a drop-down menu. Some states used to require that driver’s licenses expire on the driver’s exact birthday. There have even been reports of inaccurate birth certificates .

Another obstacle: Turning 21 can be a fiasco if it falls on an off year. Ms. Tinsley-Sroka turned 21 when she was living in Rapid City, Okla., and called the police to make sure she wouldn’t be arrested for underage drinking if she went out on Feb. 28. They gave her a pass, she said. She also called several bars ahead of time to see if they would serve her. One agreed.

“I pulled up, showed my ID,” she recalled. “They said, ‘Oh, we’ve been waiting for you!’”

Yes, there are famous leap day babies.

We are not many, but we are mighty.

Famous people with leap day birthdays include Ja Rule, the hip-hop artist; Prime Minister Pedro SĂĄnchez of Spain; the actor Dennis Farina; Dinah Shore, the actress and television personality; Tony Robbins, the motivational speaker; and Pope Paul III, who was born on Feb. 29, 1468.

Perhaps the most famous fictional character born on a leap day is Superman .

What does the zodiac suggest?

For those who follow astrology, leap day babies fall under the last sign on the zodiac, Pisces — known for being intuitive, sensitive, dreamy and creative souls, Chani Nicholas, an astrologer, said. But no more than anyone else born during this season.

“We hate to break it to you,” she said in an email. “But leap day babies are exactly as special as their other Pisces siblings.”

Another astrologer, Rose Theodora, said in an email that because Feb. 29 comes around only every four years, celebrating on that day makes “a person younger than everyone else born in the same year” and experience “reverse aging.”

Pisces are associated with the planets Jupiter, which is associated with luck, and Neptune, which has nebulous qualities, Ms. Theodora said, “so it makes sense that Leap Day babies would have a day that also disappears for three years at a time.”

Until 2028

Surge pricing at Wendy's? Yes, please! I will only eat the highest-priced Baconator.

Wendy's plan is to start jacking prices right around lunch or dinner. that makes sense, because most americans who choose to slowly clog their arteries by eating at wendy's do so around those times..

i give to me

Shortly after this column was written, Wendy's – presumably intimidated by my clout – chicken-nuggeted out and released a statement saying that while it will enact " dynamic pricing ," the fast-food chain will not implement " surge pricing ... raising prices when demand is highest ." In a statement to USA TODAY , the company said "we have no plans to do that and would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most." But it will, apparently, consider lowering prices at other times, which according to math amounts to the same thing. I stand by this column. And you're welcome, American consumers. Once again, journalism has made a difference.

Have you ever thought to yourself: “This cheeseburger I just bought tastes delicious, but wouldn’t it be cool if I could pay more for it during the times when most normal people want to eat?”

I know I certainly have. My name is Rex Huppke and I’m a renowned USA TODAY columnist and a known person on the internet . Nothing matters more to me than status, so I was PUMPED to read about Wendy’s new plan to test dynamic pricing at its restaurants.

The plan is simple, and similar to the way ride-share companies and other retail and service providers raise and lower prices depending on demand. Dynamic pricing is a great way for fantastically wealthy corporations to make more money by leveraging the needs of not fantastically wealthy people, or “normals” as we status-havers call them.

Yes, Wendy's, please give me your highest priced burger!

It also gives people like me a chance to believe that intentionally spending more for something that cost less 10 minutes ago is proof that I’m cool and edgy.

Face it, it's Biden vs. Trump: Can the media wake me when the general election starts?

Wendy’s plan is to test jacking the price of a Frosty or a Pretzel Baconator right around lunch or dinner. That makes sense, because most Americans who choose to slowly clog their arteries by eating at Wendy’s tend to do so around those times. You know, the times when people get hungry.

More hungry people + higher-priced Ghost Pepper Ranch Chicken Sandwiches = more money for Wendy’s!

Overpriced fast food makes for great social media content, so I'm in

And for someone like me? It means a chance to #PostOnInstagram a pic of me scarfing down a Loaded Nacho Triple Cheeseburger right when it’s at its HIGHEST PRICE POINT! #PoshLife #GetOnMyBurgerLevel

The company plans to test the dynamic pricing next year, and if you think I’m going to be caught dead buying low-cost midday fries, you know nothing about my personal branding.

I and my fellow influencers will only feast on processed food stuff when there is maximum demand.

Wendy's boasts of dynamic pricing and suggestive selling

During a recent conference call, Wendy’s CEO Kirk Tanner said this : “Beginning as early as 2025, we will begin testing more enhanced features like dynamic pricing and daypart offerings, along with AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling.”

Kirk, I don’t know what “daypart offerings” are, but I’ll take 12 of them, and make sure you’re charging me the peak rate. And hit me with all the suggestive selling you can. I’ll be in the corner booth eating a $39 Big Bacon Classic Double and hoping my heart doesn’t explode before I can post about it on TikTok.

Kirk continued : “As we continue to show the benefit of this technology in our company-operated restaurants, franchisee interest in digital menu boards should increase, further supporting sales and profit growth across the system.”

As God intended.

Don't bore me with your desire to afford lunch, my $20 Frosty is melting

Look, I’m sure there are some folks out there who think paying more for the same damn nugget of spicy chicken-ish stuff is profoundly unfair to consumers and likely to damage brand loyalty and drive people to other fast-food places that don’t engage in cynical time-of-day price gouging.

But what about the people who think a funny social media post of themselves paying more for a frozen-dairy desert that tastes like cold mud makes them a person people care about?

$20 for flipping burgers? California minimum wage increase will cost consumers – and workers.

This is important to us, and I don’t think the needs of people who want to afford lunch should trump us wanting to floss on what used to be Twitter about dropping three-hundo at a Wendy’s.

So I say, bring on the dynamic pricing. You may lose business, but you’ll lock up the most important consumer demographic: people willing to pay anything for attention.

Can I give Wendy Williams her flowers?

OPINION: Wendy Williams was good on TV, but she was one of the greatest radio broadcasters I have ever heard.

Wendy Williams Honored With Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own.   Read more  opinions  on theGrio.

I just want to give Wendy Williams her flowers because it’s a rough time in Wendyworld right now. The new Lifetime documentary “Where Is Wendy Williams?” makes her look sad, and dementia has made her unrecognizable. It’s tragic to watch her mind and body betray her. For me, what I choose to remember is that once upon a time, Williams was one of the greatest radio broadcasters of all time.

I understand why Williams moved from radio to TV. She wanted to make more money, have a bigger platform and become a bigger star. I get it. She created “ The Wendy Williams Show ,” a very good talk show that ran for 13 seasons. But before TV, when she was in the world of radio, Williams was an absolute legend.

From 2001 to 2008, Williams hosted “The Wendy Williams Experience” from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on WBLS in New York City — a show that was syndicated throughout the country. At its height, there were over 12 million people listening to her every day. For most of the four-hour show, it was just Williams talking. They didn’t play records, they didn’t have lots of guests and for most of her run, she didn’t have a co-host. ( Charlamagne da God did the show with her at one point, years before he had “The Breakfast Club,” but even when he was there, it was always her show as opposed to the way Charlemagne and DJ Envy share space on their show.)

‘Star Stories With TourĂ©’: That time I played basketball with Prince

In 2009, shortly after she walked away from her radio show, she was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame .

On “The Experience.” there were guests and callers from time to time, but for the most part, it was just Williams — just that gorgeous voice and her big personality. That was incredibly captivating.

Williams was, then as always, the ultimate girl’s girl. On the radio, she could make any topic fascinating but she was most at home doing celebrity gossip. She was the gossip queen who loved to be up in famous people’s business. In 2008, the New York Times called her a “scandalmonger, the kind of beauty-salon savant who wishes famous people the worst.” They also said she “can be startingly mean-spirited.”

I’ll never forget Williams asking Whitney Houston about her drug habit . Or the time she talked to R. Kelly’s brother about the singer being illiterate. Or the time a caller asked her if the caller’s husband was bisexual. Williams famously said, “ Denial is a river in Egypt! Your husband is gay !” (Back then Williams loved to assert that some man was secretly gay. After a while she just said “How you doin’?” in her signature sing-songy way and the audience knew what she meant.)

There was nothing Williams would not say. She was fearless, funny, smart and wild. She’s the auntie who arrives with the wine, the tea and the storytelling ability to keep everyone enthralled for hours. Every afternoon that she was on, she made unbelievably great radio.

She was also very flirty. Many times, when she had guests in the studio, she would conclude the interview and then, as they walked out of the studio, she would say something about their backside. She actually did that to me once.

I was a guest on her show — I don’t recall what year or what I was there to promote. I just remember sliding into a highly pitched chair in a small gray studio and feeling very intimidated by her. I was nervous because Williams was fun, but you never knew what she’d say. I enjoyed listening to that in the car, but in the studio, when the joke might be about you, it’s a different story. On that day, she did not say anything out of pocket; we had a nice, normal interview. When she let me know it was time to go, I thanked her — relieved that it had gone well — and I walked out of the studio. As I did, she said, on the air, “Ooooh, I love to watch him walk away!”

‘Star Stories With TourĂ©’: That time I got into Kanye’s head and how it offered a glimpse of the future

I was mortified. She’d just talked about my butt as hundreds of thousands of people listened. At the same time, I was deeply complimented. She’d talked about my butt as hundreds of thousands of people listened! I wanted to hide but I also wanted to say, “Aww, thank you, Wendy!!!”

Being a radio host and a TV host are very different jobs, and just because you succeed in one does not mean you will be great at the other. Williams was good at doing TV and made herself into an unforgettable presence on that medium. But on the radio, she was one of the best of her generation. It’s incredibly hard to talk to an unseen audience for four hours a day with no script and remain compelling, engaging and fun enough that they want to come back for more of you the next day. Williams on the radio was a once-in-a-generation talent and as much as I love blasting music in the car, I always turned it off if I had a chance to hear Williams. I miss her show, and I miss the big, bold person she used to be. Seeing her in trouble makes me want to stop and give her her flowers. She’s one of the greatest radio broadcasters I’ve ever heard.

At the end of 2022, Kelly Osbourne gave birth to her and her partner Sid Wilson's first child.

Kelly, 39, famously laid low during her pregnancy, and didn’t initially share any updates on her baby — who is named Sidney — after welcoming him.

In fact, her mom, sharon osbourne , was the one to publicly break the news that kelly had given birth..

On a Jan. 2023 episode of her show The Talk , Sharon candidly revealed that Kelly had welcomed a baby boy — and shared that the child was named after his father. “She won’t let a picture go out of him, and I’m so proud of her,” Sharon said.

The following day, Kelly shared a message on Instagram about how it's “no one’s place” to discuss her baby. “I am not ready to share him with the world. It is no one's place but mine to share any information on my baby,” she wrote.

Months later, Kelly eventually began posting photos of her and Sid’s baby and recalling aspects of her pregnancy experience.

In August 2023, she revealed she purposefully stopped posting photos while she was expecting in a bid to avoid being fat-shamed , writing on Instagram: “There are no pictures of me pregnant because I hid for nine months because I did not want to get fat-shamed.”

And now, Kelly has recalled getting into a massive disagreement with her partner when it came to deciding on their baby’s last name.

Last week, Kelly revealed on her parents’ podcast that she and Sid got into a “huge fight” because the Slipknot member didn’t “let” her give their child her last name as well as his.

“this is personal, and i didn’t expect to ever talk about this, but i’m going to,” kelly began . “it’s the biggest fight me and my baby’s father have ever, ever, ever had, and probably ever, ever will.”.

“I wanted our son to have both of our last names, and he wouldn’t let me. We had a huge fight,” she shared.

“I feel that I was forced into doing something I didn’t wanna do and I can never ever, ever forgive him for that, but we can move on,” she continued. “So right now my son doesn’t have a double-barreled last name.”

Kelly went on to note that she and Sid attended “couples therapy” and had plenty of “eye-opening conversations” about the subject — after which he ultimately came around.

“After lots of eye-opening conversations and some couples therapy, he has seen the light,” she said. “We are going to legally change our son’s name to have both of our last names.”

“We both made our child, so he should have both of our last names,” Kelly added, while her parents expressed their joy at the outcome.

After Sharon noted that naming kids after their parents is a "very dated" practice, Kelly said, "Don't even get me started mom. Because it goes Sid's dad, then Sid, and now our son. Sid told me that his grandfather had the same name, but he didn't! His grandfather's name was Fred."

"I love Sid's name, don't get me wrong," Kelly later added. "I love my baby's name now. He is a Sidney."

60 Songs That Explain the ’90s is back for its final stretch run ( and a brand-new book! ). Join The Ringer ’s Rob Harvilla as he treks through the soundtrack of his youth, one song (and embarrassing anecdote) at a time. Follow and listen for free on Spotify . In Episode 118 of 60 Songs That Explain the ’90s— yep, you read that right—we’re covering Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason.” Read an excerpt below.

You cried. I cried. Everyone cried. According to the internet, everyone cried. My mom texted me. You know how many times my mom has texted me about the Grammys? Zero times, previously. Did you hear that giant burst of applause just now, for Tracy Chapman, at the 2024 Grammys? You remember how this performance opens with a hero shot, zoomed in on her guitar, on her hands playing the immortal, gentle, vulnerable, empathetic riff to “Fast Car,” and everyone in the world thought, Is that really her? and the camera slowly zoomed out and it was really her and you got, like, chills? You remember that? You got chills. I got chills. Everyone got chills. Everyone cried. I’m here to tell you I’ve been complaining about the Grammys on a professional level for my whole entire life, and you can go years, you can go decades waiting for one Grammy moment that literally anyone enjoys, and Tracy Chapman is the only Grammy moment in history that literally everyone enjoyed.

Me, myself, I got nothing to prove . She sounds like she’s almost crying, right? She’s so moved, in this moment, by the realization that she’s making everyone else cry. So this country singer, Luke Combs, is like a giant sentient Sam’s Club endcap, right? The endcap’s got beef jerky and camouflage winter coats in it. He’s got the baseball cap. It’s like he perpetually walks around in a fishing boat, with holes in the bottom of the fishing boat for his legs and feet. I don’t even mean any of that pejoratively. As blockbuster arena-filling modern country stars go, Luke Combs is pretty cool, I gotta say. And so Luke Combs in 2023 has this bonkers chart-topping hit cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. I was playing cornhole at my family reunion in rural Pennsylvania last summer and Luke Combs’s cover of “Fast Car” came on the radio and I got really super good at cornhole for like 45 seconds. It was awesome. I’m not explaining what cornhole is if you’re not familiar. I don’t have time.

Songs That Explain the ’90s , the Book

If you’ve ever listened to  60 Songs That Explain the ’90s  and thought, “I wish this podcast were a book,” do we have some news for you.  Songs That Explain the ’90s  is out now on Twelve Books. Order here.

And there is some consternation, understandably, about a big, burly country bro dominating country radio—the ultra-macho, pickup-truck-humping, He-Man Woman-Hater’s Club cesspool that is country radio—there is consternation about Luke Combs dominating country radio with a beloved song written and sung by a Black woman. Sung by Tracy Chapman, an international deity and somewhat of a deified mirage, nowadays. Not a public figure. Not someone who requires our attention or approval. Me, myself, I got nothing to prove.

But suddenly Tracy Chapman’s on my TV again, playing “Fast Car” with Luke Combs. But never mind Luke Combs: There’s Tracy Chapman, beaming with joy, and you’re crying and I’m crying and I don’t know about you but when I cry I get florid, right, I start thinking about the “Fast Car” guitar riff, the modest pristine little melodic jump, brrr nrrr nrrrr nrrrr nrrrr, dnnnnggg dnnnnnng . It’s not a huge leap. She slides up, what, eight frets on her guitar, but it feels like a huge leap. And then I start thinking about the lyrics to “Fast Car,” the modesty of the escape “Fast Car” describes: Won’t have to drive too far / Just ’cross the border and into the city . Eight frets equals eight highway exits, maybe.

Then I start thinking about the line Mama went off and left him / Wanted more from life than he could give and then I think about the climactic verse of “Fast Car,” the downer ending, the disillusionment, the realization that the singer has become like her mother, still longing for escape.

I’d always hoped for better . Holy shit. Listen, I get emotional , all right? I said I cried; I didn’t say I stopped crying. I have heard “Fast Car” a billion times. And thanks to the Grammys I will now happily endeavor to hear it a billion more times. We’re playing the chorus. Of course we’re playing the chorus. I’m not a monster.

And once again the melodic leap we’re about to take here—the I-eee-I —is not some enormous, grandiose, overwrought rock ’n’ roll–type gesture, but it’s all the more triumphant and devastating and then triumphant again for how modest it is. She fears no danger. She is invulnerable. She sees no foe. She is related to the earliest times, and to the latest.

“Fast Car” came out in 1988. It appears on Tracy Chapman’s debut album, self-titled, from 1988. I heard “Fast Car” one billion times in the 1990s. It is canonically, essentially, indelibly, yet not officially the ’90s, and thus technically outside my purview. But Tracy Chapman is a figure of tremendous compassion and understanding, and that is why Tracy gifted us with another bonkers hit song, and this one was the ’90s, canonically, essentially, indelibly, and officially. Us works there—she gave this gift to all of us. But she gave this gift to me, especially.

This week we are discussing “Give Me One Reason,” by Tracy Chapman, from her 1995 album, New Beginning . I didn’t need another reason to talk about Tracy Chapman, but I am grateful to the Grammys anyway for giving me another reason. Before I get distracted by anything else, listen to this guitar riff, dude. You’ve heard this song at least half a billion times, but there’s a reason for that. She’s playing electric guitar now, but there’s no overblown grandiosity to it. There is, instead, tremendous personality. The slyness, the flirtatiousness, the skepticism. This is a guitar riff that says, I am ill-advisedly attracted to you, and I am aware that you will gravely disappoint me. Listen to the way the first note bounces, dude.

I keep wanting to describe this as bluesy , also, and bluesy is accurate as analysis, given the vibe and the chord structure and whatnot, but this word bluesy just feels weird in my mouth, though now I’ve said the word three times where I could’ve just said bluesy once and kept it moving. Four times now. In the early 2000s, I’m like 23, maybe, and I go see a rad local blues band in Columbus, Ohio, and I’m sitting behind this woman who’s drinking a bottle of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, and she’s banging her bottle of Mike’s Hard Lemonade on the table in time to the music, like, doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo . And this image fucked me up for weeks. I can’t explain it. That’s ungenerous clueless young snooty rock-critic behavior on my part, obviously, fueled by this dopey idea in that moment that I get the blues in some fundamental soulful way that the Mike’s Hard Lemonade lady does not. That’s bullshit, obviously, but I just want you to have all the facts—or I guess all the feelings.

The greatness of the first 10 seconds of “Give Me One Reason” illustrates a core Tracy Chapman proposition: these elegant, beautiful, warm, compact, incredibly lifelike little guitar riffs—[ hums “Fast Car” riff ]—that you absorb into your bloodstream within 10 seconds the first time you hear them, and you remember them fondly for the rest of your life. And sometimes it’s just chords , y’know, four simple and bright and familiar chords that she makes her own, that she somehow transforms into a classic Tracy Chapman riff. Very few people who’ve ever walked the earth can do this; can play four chords you’ve heard 50 billion times apiece and make them sound like their chords, make these chords sound brand-new and radical and revolutionary. Tom Petty comes to mind. Tom Petty did that a lot. But like, if I pulled out a guitar right now—I’m not gonna do this, don’t worry—if I pulled out a guitar and played G, C, E minor, and D, you’d be like, Yeah? So? But that’s not your reaction when Tracy Chapman does it.

IR-2024-45, Feb. 21, 2024

WASHINGTON — During the busiest time of the tax filing season, the Internal Revenue Service kicked off its 2024 Tax Time Guide series to help remind taxpayers of key items they’ll need to file a 2023 tax return.

As part of its four-part, weekly Tax Time Guide series, the IRS continues to provide new and updated resources to help taxpayers file an accurate tax return. Taxpayers can count on IRS.gov for updated resources and tools along with a special free help page available around the clock. Taxpayers are also encouraged to read Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) for additional guidance.

Essentials to filing an accurate tax return

The deadline this tax season for filing Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return , or 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors , is April 15, 2024. However, those who live in Maine or Massachusetts will have until April 17, 2024, to file due to official holidays observed in those states.

Taxpayers are advised to wait until they receive all their proper tax documents before filing their tax returns. Filing without all the necessary documents could lead to mistakes and potential delays.

It’s important for taxpayers to carefully review their documents for any inaccuracies or missing information. If any issues are found, taxpayers should contact the payer immediately to request a correction or confirm that the payer has their current mailing or email address on file.

Creating an IRS Online Account can provide taxpayers with secure access to information about their federal tax account, including payment history, tax records and other important information.

Having organized tax records can make the process of preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier and may also help taxpayers identify any overlooked deductions or credits .

Taxpayers who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or ITIN may need to renew it if it has expired and is required for a U.S. federal tax return. If an expiring or expired ITIN is not renewed, the IRS can still accept the tax return, but it may result in processing delays or delays in credits owed.

Changes to credits and deductions for tax year 2023

Standard deduction amount increased. For 2023, the standard deduction amount has been increased for all filers. The amounts are:

  • Single or married filing separately — $13,850.
  • Head of household — $20,800.
  • Married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse — $27,700.

Additional child tax credit amount increased. The maximum additional child tax credit amount has increased to $1,600 for each qualifying child.

Child tax credit enhancements. Many changes to the Child tax credit (CTC) that had been implemented by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 have expired.

However, the IRS continues to closely monitor legislation being considered by Congress affecting the Child Tax Credit. The IRS reminds taxpayers eligible for the Child Tax Credit that they should not wait to file their 2023 tax return this filing season. If Congress changes the CTC guidelines, the IRS will automatically make adjustments for those who have already filed so no additional action will be needed by those eligible taxpayers.

Under current law, for tax year 2023, the following currently apply:

  • The enhanced credit allowed for qualifying children under age 6 and children under age 18 has expired. For 2023, the initial amount of the CTC is $2,000 for each qualifying child. The credit amount begins to phase out where AGI income exceeds $200,000 ($400,000 in the case of a joint return). The amount of the CTC that can be claimed as a refundable credit is limited as it was in 2020 except that the maximum ACTC amount for each qualifying child increased to $1,500.
  • The increased age allowance for a qualifying child has expired. A child must be under age 17 at the end of 2023 to be a qualifying child.

Changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The enhancements for taxpayers without a qualifying child implemented by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 will not apply for tax year 2023. To claim the EITC without a qualifying child in 2023, taxpayers must be at least age 25 but under age 65 at the end of 2023. If a taxpayer is married filing a joint return, one spouse must be at least age 25 but under age 65 at the end of 2023.

Taxpayers may find more information on Child tax credits in the Instructions for Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) .

New Clean Vehicle Credit. The credit for new qualified plug-in electric drive motor vehicles has changed. This credit is now known as the Clean Vehicle Credit. The maximum amount of the credit and some of the requirements to claim the credit have changed. The credit is reported on Form 8936, Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit , and on Form 1040, Schedule 3.

More information on these and other credit and deduction changes for tax year 2023 may be found in the Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) , taxpayer guide.

1099-K reporting requirements have not changed for tax year 2023

Following feedback from taxpayers, tax professionals and payment processors, and to reduce taxpayer confusion, the IRS recently released Notice 2023-74 announcing a delay of the new $600 reporting threshold for tax year 2023 on Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions . The previous reporting thresholds will remain in place for 2023.

The IRS has published a fact sheet with further information to assist taxpayers concerning changes to 1099-K reporting requirements for tax year 2023.

Form 1099-K reporting requirements

Taxpayers who take direct payment by credit, debit or gift cards for selling goods or providing services by customers or clients should get a Form 1099-K from their payment processor or payment settlement entity no matter how many payments they got or how much they were for.

If they used a payment app or online marketplace and received over $20,000 from over 200 transactions,

the payment app or online marketplace is required to send a Form 1099-K. However, they can send a Form 1099-K with lower amounts. Whether or not the taxpayer receives a Form 1099-K, they must still report any income on their tax return.

What’s taxable? It’s the profit from these activities that’s taxable income. The Form 1099-K shows the gross or total amount of payments received. Taxpayers can use it and other records to figure out the actual taxes they owe on any profits. Remember that all income, no matter the amount, is taxable unless the tax law says it isn’t – even if taxpayers don’t get a Form 1099-K.

What’s not taxable? Taxpayers shouldn’t receive a Form 1099-K for personal payments, including money received as a gift and for repayment of shared expenses. That money isn’t taxable. To prevent getting an inaccurate Form 1099-K, note those payments as “personal,” if possible.

Good recordkeeping is key. Be sure to keep good records because it helps when it’s time to file a tax return. It’s a good idea to keep business and personal transactions separate to make it easier to figure out what a taxpayer owes.

For details on what to do if a taxpayer gets a Form 1099-K in error or the information on their form is incorrect, visit IRS.gov/1099k  or find frequently asked questions at Form 1099-K FAQs .

Direct File pilot program provides a new option this year for some

The IRS launched the Direct File pilot program during the 2024 tax season. The pilot will give eligible taxpayers an option to prepare and electronically file their 2023 tax returns, for free, directly with the IRS.

The Direct File pilot program will be offered to eligible taxpayers in 12 pilot states who have relatively simple tax returns reporting only certain types of income and claiming limited credits and deductions. The 12 states currently participating in the Direct File pilot program are Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state and Wyoming. Taxpayers can check their eligibility at directfile.irs.gov .

The Direct File pilot is currently in the internal testing phase and will be more widely available in mid-March. Taxpayers can get the latest news about the pilot at Direct File pilot news and sign up to be notified when Direct File is open to new users.

Finally, for comprehensive information on all these and other changes for tax year 2023, taxpayers and tax professionals are encouraged to read the Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) , taxpayer guide, as well as visit other topics of taxpayer interest on IRS.gov.
