How do I manually set an IP address on my Samsung Smart TV?

By: Author Olin Wade (Remodel or Move Stuff)

Setting a custom IP address on your Samsung Smart TV is a relatively simple process. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Begin by accessing the Network Settings on your TV. This can be done by pressing the Menu button on your remote, then selecting Network.

2. Next, you’ll need to select IP Settings from the Network menu and choose either Wired or Wireless. Depending on your network setup, you may need to make sure the wireless connection is enabled on the TV.

3. Switch the IP Setting to Manual and enter the IP address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway provided by your network administrator or ISP.

4. If you need to configure additional values, such as DNS and Proxy settings, select Additional Settings and enter the information as necessary.

5. Once you have all the values entered, select OK on the remote to save and apply the settings. Your Samsung Smart TV should now be configured with a custom IP address.

How do I enter IP address manually?

Entering an IP address manually is a straightforward process. First, open the Windows Start menu and type “view network connections” into the search box, then click on the View Network Connections option.

This will open the Network Connections window.

Right-click the network you wish to configure, then click Properties. This will open a new window with the settings for the selected network connection. Click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option.

If it is not already checked, check this option, then click the Properties button at the bottom of the window.

This will open the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window. Under the General tab, select the radio button for “Use the following IP address” and enter the IP address you wish to use for the machine.

The IP address should be entered as four sets of numbers separated by periods (e. g. 192.168.1.25). Normally, the subnet mask is set to the same as your IP address (e. g. 255.255.255.0). When finished configuring the IP address settings, click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

You can double check that you have entered the IP address settings correctly by running the “ipconfig” command in the Command Prompt window. To open the Command Prompt window, open the Windows Start menu and type “command prompt” into the search box, then click on the Command Prompt result.

In the Command Prompt window, type the “ipconfig” command and press enter. This will display your IP Configuration settings including the IP address.

How do you find the IP address of a TV without a remote?

Finding the IP address of a TV without a remote can be done in a few ways depending on the type of television that you have.

If you have a Smart TV, there should be a way to access network settings within the menu without a remote. To do this, you could plug in a keyboard or connect a mouse to the TV and use it to navigate the menu.

You should then be able to find the IP address of the TV within the settings.

If you have an online-only TV, then you may have to connect it to either a mobile hotspot or your home router. After you have done this, the IP address of the TV should show up in the list of connected devices on your router.

For non-smart TVs, the only way to get the IP address is to locate the physical white label on the back of the TV. On this label, the IP address should be printed.

Where is the IP address located on a TV?

The IP address for a television is typically located either on the back of the television or within the settings of your TV. If you look on the back of your TV, you may be able to locate an information sticker on the back of the TV that provides the IP address.

If you cannot locate a sticker on the back of the TV, your IP address will likely be located within the settings menu of your TV. Depending on the manufacturer of your TV, the process of finding the IP address may vary slightly.

However, usually, you will need to navigate to the settings menu and then select “Network” or “Internet. ” Within those menus, you should be able to find the IP address of your TV.

How can I connect my TV to Wi-Fi without remote?

If you need to connect your TV to Wi-Fi without the remote, the first step is to see if your TV has a Wi-Fi button or a menu button on the actual TV. You can use this to access the TV’s settings and then choose “Network” to set up the Wi-Fi connection.

If there is no button on the actual TV, you may need to use an external remote such as a universal remote, a third-party Bluetooth remote, or an IR blaster. With these remotes, you can access the TV’s settings and use them to connect to your Wi-Fi network.

You can also try to connect your TV to your wireless router via an Ethernet cable. This should let you access the router’s settings and set up the connection.

If all else fails, you can refer to your TV’s user manual for more detailed instructions on setting up your Wi-Fi connection without a remote.

What is IP remote Samsung TV?

IP remote Samsung TV is a mobile application that allows users to remotely control Samsung smart TVs and Home Theaters. With the app, users can search and browse a library of content, switch between channels, adjust the volume, access apps, send voice commands, as well as customize and control various settings on their TV or home theater system.

The app works over a Wi-Fi or mobile data (3G/LTE) connection and is compatible with select Samsung TVs and Home Theater systems released since 2011. It also supports mobile devices running Android 4.

3 or higher and iOS 8.0 or higher.

What to do if you lost your remote to your TV?

If you have lost the remote to your TV, there are a few things you can try. First, check all your usual spots — the couch, under the furniture, etc. If you’re still not finding your remote, you can try using a universal remote.

You can purchase one from a home electronics store and they typically come with simple instructions on how to program it. Another option is to connect your smartphone and use an app as your remote. Apps like Harmony, SURE and Peel Smart Remote are available to download on most phones.

Finally, you can try using the buttons on the television itself. Most modern TVs have volume and navigation buttons that you can use to access the TV settings and displays.

How do I pair my phone with my TV?

Pairing your phone with your TV depends on the type of phone you have, as well as the type and model number of your TV. Generally, you can pair your phone with your TV in one of three ways: via an HDMI cable, via wireless screen mirroring, or using a streaming device.

If your smartphone supports HDMI output, you can connect using an HDMI cable. First, plug the HDMI cable into your phone’s HDMI port and the other end into your TV’s HDMI port. Then, switch your TV’s input to the HDMI port you just plugged into.

Finally, open the source menu on your phone and select the HDMI option.

If your TV has a Miracast feature, it should support wireless screen mirroring. To use this method, press the “Source” button on your TV’s remote and select your TV’s Wi-Fi Network. Next, open your phone’s Settings, select Wi-Fi, and find and select your TV’s Wi-Fi Network.

Finally, open the Smart View or Screen Mirroring menu on your phone and select your TV from the list of devices.

The third option is to use a streaming device, such as Apple TV, Google Chromecast, or Amazon Fire Stick. To connect a streaming device, make sure your TV is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone.

Then, install the device’s app on your phone to start streaming.

Pairing your phone with your TV can be a bit tricky, so make sure to follow the instructions that came with your device. You can also search online for your specific model numbers and instructions.

How can I use Roku without remote or Wi-Fi?

Unfortunately, you cannot use Roku without both a remote and Wi-Fi connection. The Roku device needs to be connected to both a remote and a Wi-Fi network in order to access the Roku content library and launch streaming apps.

Without a wireless or Ethernet connection, you cannot use the device.

However, for some Roku devices, you may be able to use a mobile app or a computer as a remote. If you have a device that supports this type of remote, you can download the Roku mobile app and use it to access the device’s settings and launch streaming apps.

You can also use a computer to access the web interface of some Roku devices and control them remotely.

In summary, you cannot use Roku without both a remote and Wi-Fi connection. You may be able to use a mobile app or a computer as a remote depending on the type of Roku device you own.

How to Reset Network Settings On Your Samsung TV (An EASY FIX For That!)

Table of Contents

You come home from a long day at work, and you’re ready to relax.

You’ve been waiting all day to watch that popular series on Netflix, but your Samsung TV won’t connect to Wi-Fi.

You try everything you can think of—you unplug the router and plug it back in, you reboot your phone, you even restart the entire modem—but nothing works.

How can you get your TV working so you can finally relax?

We’ve got some tips for you!

How to reset network settings on a Samsung TV

One of the first things you’ll want to do is perform a network reset.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. On your remote, click on the Menu or Home button.

2. Navigate to and click on Settings.

3. Click on Network.

4. Click on Network Status.

5. Go to Reset Network.

How to troubleshoot network issues on a Samsung TV

Unplug samsung tv from the wall.

If you’re having trouble connecting to the Internet on your Samsung TV, you might want to try unplugging it from the wall.

The most common way to troubleshoot network issues on a Samsung TV is to unplug it from the wall.

Hold the power button on your Samsung TV for 30 seconds after it has been unplugged from the wall in order to drain any residual power left in the TV and allow it to soft reset itself.

This fix should work in the majority of cases.

If unplugging Samsung TV does not fix network issues, try other fixes below. If none of these fixes work, consult a technician for help with your Samsung TV’s network issue.

Update your Samsung TVs software

If you’re having trouble with your Samsung TV, it’s possible that a software update is all it takes to fix the problem.

Updating your Samsung TVs software can fix a number of problems, including video and audio settings resetting back to their defaults. If this has happened to you, all is not lost. Updating your TV’s software will fix this issue and more!

After a software update, your TV may not be able to connect to WiFi in the way it should. This can be frustrating if you rely on Netflix or other streaming services, but don’t worry—it’s easy to fix! You can find instructions on how to update your Samsung TVs software here.

On your Samsung TV, select Highlight Auto Update and turn it on. Next, select Software update. The TV will check for updates and install them if necessary.

Change the DNS number of your network settings

If your TV is unable to connect to the internet, one of the first things you should check is your DNS number.

Tap Menu > Network > Network Status.

Your TV will begin checking your wireless network connection. Try to change your DNS services here.

Look for the IP address and navigate your way to the DNS server. You should see “8.8.8.8” or “8.8.4.4”.

Make sure it changes according to your DNS, then allow your TV to connect again. This should get rid of the “Unable to connect to network” message.

Make sure IP settings are set to “obtain automatically”

If you’re having trouble with your TV, one of the first things you can do is check your IP settings.

To check your IP setting configuration:

Press Menu on your remote > Network > Network Status > IP Settings.

In IP Settings just make sure it says “Obtain automatically”. If it doesn’t, change it!

Manually change your IP settings

Manually setting your IP address can be used to try and troubleshoot your TV.

To manually set your IP address follow the same steps to check your IP address and then continue with the following steps:

1. On your remote, click on Menu.

2. Click on Set up.

3. Click on Network Setup.

4. Choose the Network selection.

5. Turn off DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol).

The system will now assign an IP address for you based on its own settings rather than relying on a DHCP server or router.

This will help eliminate any potential conflicts between routers or modems that might be sharing an internet connection with your television set-top box or other devices connected to its network port(s).

Perform a factory reset

A factory reset might be the answer.

Perform a factory reset from your remote control by going to Settings > All Settings > General and Privacy.

Select Reset and enter the PIN you chose when you set up your TV. The default PIN is 0000. After that, your Samsung Smart TV will automatically reset .

Factory resetting your TV will restore its original settings and software, so any apps you’ve downloaded or videos you’ve recorded will be erased.

A factory reset should fix most network issues on a Samsung TV and restore its default settings , making it easier for you to connect again.

Your internet service provider may be down

Sometimes, internet service providers will push out updates for maintaining their servers. This can cause your connection to be temporarily down.

There’s nothing you can do about this—you just have to wait for them to finish updating and then your connection should come back up.

Sometimes there may be a power outage that can cause your internet service provider to fail as well. This is going to require them to go out on-site and fix whatever is broken.

The good news is that this will only happen once every couple of years so don’t worry too much about it!

But if there isn’t anything broken, you can go ahead and try and call your ISP to see if they can reboot your connection, and sometimes that might help!

Reset your router and modem

If your Samsung TV is not connecting to the internet, there are two potential points of failure that can cause network issues.

These are the connections between your TV and the router, and the connection between the router and the internet.

Simply unplug both devices for a few minutes and then plug them back in again.

Then, turn on your connection to a computer and run it to make sure everything is working properly. Open up your internet browser, go to any website, and see if it will show up. If everything is working properly, you should also see a fully opaque wedge-like icon pointing down on the settings screen of your computer, indicating that all is well.

If this doesn’t work, try moving your router closer to your Samsung TV for a stronger connection. This can be done by unplugging it from one location and plugging it into another next to where you want it placed in your house.

But after moving it closer, power up both devices again before attempting to connect your TV once more.

If that’s not possible, you can also find a LAN cable that is long enough to connect your router directly to your TV.

If neither of these solutions works for you, hard reset both devices by unplugging them from their power sources, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging them back in again after waiting for 10 seconds before attempting to connect again.

Try editing the TV settings

Sometimes, the issue with your Samsung TV’s network settings may be due to other settings that can have some adverse effects on your internet connection.

  • If your Samsung TV is having trouble connecting to a wireless network, try editing its settings.
  • If your Samsung TV can connect to a wireless network, try connecting it to different networks.
  • You should also try and remove some connected devices from the network to free up bandwidth space.
  • Are other devices able to connect to your router? If you find that it’s just your TV that has issues, then the problem might be with the TV and not the other devices.

Reset your Smart Hub settings

Resetting your SmartHub can solve a lot of problems. It’s easy to do and only takes a few steps.

  • On your remote control, click on the Home button or the Menu button.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Click on All Settings.
  • Select Support.
  • Select Device Care.
  • Click on Self Diagnosis (you may need to scroll down).
  • Click on Reset Smart Hub , then enter in your pin (by default, it is 0000).

Check you are Wi-Fi password

Check your WiFi router’s password. If it’s too difficult or long, try changing it.

To do this:

  • Go to Settings
  • Click on General
  • Click on Network
  • Click on Open Network Settings
  • Finally, click on Wireless.

If Show password is enabled, type in the correct password to verify that it’s correct before continuing.

If this doesn’t solve the issue, try re-entering your WiFi password. If that doesn’t work either, there may be something wrong with your settings and configuration.

Disconnect other devices from your Wi-Fi

If you’re having trouble connecting to a WiFi network, try disconnecting all other devices from your network.

If there’s a limit on the number of devices that can connect to your hotspot, check under device settings for the hotspot and increase the limit so that your Samsung TV can connect.

Or if that’s not possible, disconnect some of your other devices from the WiFi in order to troubleshoot network issues on your TV.

Try using an ethernet cable

If you want to use a LAN cable to connect your TV directly to your router or modem, this is an alternative to wireless.

The downfall of this is that you will have a wire showing, and you’ll also have to find a wire that is long enough to reach from your TV to your router.

Unplugging and plugging in your TV

If you’ve been having trouble with your TV, there’s a quick fix that can help.

Unplugging and plugging in your TV is a simple process that will usually solve any problems you might be having:

  • Unplug your TV from the wall.
  • Wait for about 1 minute.
  • Plug in your TV again.
  • Turn on your TV with the remote as usual

How to optimize your wireless network for a Samsung TV

  • Make sure to check your router and make sure it is plugged in and working properly.
  • Make sure that all of your cords are securely plugged into their respective ports on the router, and then make sure they are not damaged or frayed in any way.
  • Check your router. If your router is old, it might need to be replaced.
  • Move things around! If there are dead spots in your house where the WiFi doesn’t reach very well—or at all—it’s worth moving things around.
  • Try changing your Wi-Fi channel or changing some settings on your router. 2.4 GHz frequencies are able to reach farther distances, while 5 GHz frequencies have shorter but more powerful signals. If you have things like walls or large objects in between your TV and your modem, try switching to 2.4 GHz. If they’re close together and your signal is poor, try switching your modem to 5 GHz.
  • If you have a lot of devices connected to your WiFi at once, this can cause interference with your signal and lower its strength. Try removing devices that you don’t normally use often. If that’s not possible, you might want to look into buying a modem that allows more connected devices.
  • Always keep your TV, your router, and your modem’s firmware up-to-date.
  • Routers and modems need room to breathe. Don’t stuff them in a closet. These machines produce a decent amount of heat, and sometimes that can hurt your WiFi signal.

Smart TV IP Address: Beginners Guide (Find, Hide & Change It)

Whenever you connect any device to the internet through your broadband router, it immediately and automatically acquires an Internet Protocol (IP) address. This is a series of numbers that identify your device as part of your network.

Your Smart TV has an IP address so internet servers can send the resources you want to access online. The Smart TV needs the IP address to communicate with servers remotely and to local devices within the same Wi-Fi network. You can find, hide, or change the IP address of your Smart TV.

Read on to find out more on the purpose of an IP address for your Smart TV. Find out why you need the Smart TV IP address, how to protect it, why you would want to change it, and how to change it.

Table of Contents

Do Smart TVs Have IP Addresses?

Like all other devices which connect to the internet, your Smart TV has an IP address. This is so that internet servers around the world know where to send the online resource you’re trying to access.

Your IP address is provided by your local network and registered on the Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) servers. It is assigned to your Smart TV by your router which connects your local network to the world wide web.

The IP is a unique identifier that allows your Smart TV to send data, request content, and receive data from servers and other devices. The IP address acts much like a telephone number. When you call a phone number, your call goes to a particular device. The person on the other end can identify who you are simply by seeing the calling number.

The IP address for your Smart TV has two parts. The first is the network ID which has three numbers. The second part is the host ID which is one number. For example, your IP address could be 192.168.1.1. In this case, your Smart TVs network ID is 192.168.1 while your host ID is 1.

Why Do Smart TVs Have an IP Address?

Every device that connects to the internet needs an IP address. When connected to the internet, the IP address allows the Smart TV to send requests for content and to receive content and data from network servers.

For example, if you want to watch a popular TV show like say, The Witcher, you will connect to Netflix and search for the show. You will then click on the episode you want to watch.

This sends a message from your Smart TV, through the Netflix app, to the Netflix servers. The Netflix server then identifies your Smart TV using the IP address and sends you the show.

Without an IP address, the Netflix server wouldn’t know which of the trillions of internet devices in the world to send the show to.

When you’re facing problems streaming your favorite shows, one of the troubleshooting points of focus will be your IP address. Without it, the Smart TV manufacturer or repair staff will find it difficult to restore your streaming services.

It’s important to note that your IP address can change, especially if you change from one router to another. For example, if your router goes off and you use your smartphone as a hotspot, your Smart TV will have a different IP address than what it had before.

Your Smart TV’s IP address can reveal your geolocation (This can be helpful if your Smart TV is stolen) , though it can’t reveal your precise location. This is because the Smart TV’s IP address only reveals the location of the server nearest to you rather than the exact physical address of your device.

The location information your Smart TV reveals are:

Even though your Smart TV’s IP address doesn’t reveal personal identifying information, others can use the available information to piece together your identity and physical address.

For instance, your ISP will have records of the credit card you used for paying subscription fees. The credit card will have your name and registered address.

How to Find the IP Address of My Smart TV

There are several ways to find the IP address of your Smart TV. These include:

Find Address Using the Remote

Not all TVs support displaying network details on the TV screen, especially older Smart TVs. Nevertheless, most modern Smart TV models allow users to access network information.

The general steps of finding your IP address on most Smart TV brands are:

  • Switch on your TV and connect to the router.
  • Press the menu button on your remote control to display your Smart TV’s main menu.
  • Click on ‘Network’ or something similar on your main menu.
  • Network Status
  • Network Settings
  • Wi-Fi Direct
  • Device Name
  • You might want to first click on ‘Network Status’ to make sure your Smart TV is properly connected to a working router, and connected to the internet.
  • Subnet Mask
  • DNS Setting
  • Under IP Address you will see the IP address which looks something like 192.168.1.17.

Find Smart TV IP Address Using Apps

If your main menu and subsequent menu lack any of the steps above or something similar, you can use the installed apps to find your Smart TV’s IP address.

The steps are:

  • Make sure your Smart TV is connected to the broadband router, either through an Ethernet cable or through Wi-Fi.
  • Select one app, such as Hulu or Paramount+. This method works with almost any installed app on your Smart TV.
  • On your chosen app, go to settings.
  • Under settings, go to Network info or Device.
  • You may go to other menus such as support or wireless connections.
  • Depending on the manufacturer, at this point you will either see a pop up showing the IP address of a menu item leading you to the IP address.

Find Smart TV IP Address Without Remote

If for whatever reason your remote control isn’t working, you can use an IP scanner tool such as Angry IP Scanner to find your TV’s IP address.

  • Switch off any other TVs on the same network and only leave on the TV whose IP address you want.
  • Switch off any devices from the same manufacturer as the Smart TV. For example, if you have a Samsung Smart TV, switch off all Samsung smartphones. You don’t have to switch off all these other gadgets, but switching off leaves less room for confusion later.
  • Install the IP scanner tool to your computer and run it.
  • The scanner will immediately begin discovery and will scan all networks within range.
  • After scanning, the scanner tool will show a list of connected devices. You will see the manufacturer name of your Smart TV in the list. If you have multiple devices from the same manufacturer, you may have to switch off the others and run a ping test to discover which one identifies your Smart TV .
  • Next to your Smart TV’s manufacturer name you will see other details such as IP address, ping, and ports.  You have successfully identified your Smart TV’s IP address.

Find Smart TV IP Address with Phone

There are various smartphone apps that allow you to discover devices connected to your network. For instance, Fing can work with both android and iOS smartphones.

Use these steps:

  • Install the network scanning app to your smartphone.
  • Connect your smartphone to the same Wi-Fi network as your Smart TV.
  • On the scanning app, tap on ‘Devices’ to display all the devices connected to your network.
  • You will find your TV manufacturer name displayed in the list.
  • If you have multiple devices from the same manufacturer, you may have to run a ping test by switching them

Find Smart TV IP Address Using the Router

You can access the router console to display the list of connected devices.

The steps to follow are:

On a browser, go to the router login page . You can do this by looking under your router for the router’s IP address. Copy this into the URL address bar of your browser.

Check all the connected devices and you will see the manufacturer name of your Smart TV.

Note that some routers may only show the TV and other gadgets as ‘localhost’. So this method may not work as well as the other methods. Nonetheless, you can still run a ping test to identify which of the devices is the Smart TV.

How Do I Hide My TV IP?

For your personal security and privacy, you may want to hide your IP address from the rest of the world. For Smart TVs, you may also want to mask your IP address to allow you access to geo-restricted content.

Every time your Smart TV connects to the internet, the installed apps record your IP address. Cybercriminals , regulatory authorities, streaming services, advertisers, your ISP, and other interested parties may identify your IP address and use it for their own purposes.

For instance, marketing analysts can use your Smart TV IP address to monitor your viewing habits. They then sell this information to advertisers who now know what kinds of advertisements to feed you. These adverts can become disruptive, popping up all over your usual online spaces.

It is possible to hide your Smart TV IP address.

The simplest way to mask or hide your Smart TV IP address is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This is an online tool that encrypts your data, thus anonymizing your online activity.

VPN’s work by assigning you random IP addresses attached to geolocations far away from where you really are.

For instance, many people in developing countries use VPNs to access content reserved for North American audiences.

To use a VPN with your Smart TV:

  • First identify the VPN service you would like to use and set up an account. Choose a free or paid subscription depending on your needs. It is best to use a secondary device such as a computer or smartphone to set up your account.
  • Switch on your TV and clear all stored data , especially for the streaming app you want to use.
  • Next, go to the Smart TV’s app store to download the app for the VPN service and log in.
  • Connect the VPN to a server in your country of choice. For example, if you want to access Netflix US, choose a US location. If you want to access BBC iPlayer, choose a UK location.
  • Your Smart TV is now connected to the region you chose.

You can find more basic knowledge about VPNs on Smart TVs here .

How to change DNS on Samsung TVs

Ray Walsh

In this guide, we will show you how to change DNS settings on your Samsung TV.

If you are looking to unblock more content, then you will need a smart DNS service. A Smart DNS service is a fast, effective, and super-simple way to spoof your location so you appear to be elsewhere. If you haven't already got a Smart DNS we list some services here too.

What is DNS?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is best thought of as the phone book for the internet. It is a directory of domain names that are each assigned a number (IP address).

You use a DNS address every time you visit a URL or click on a search result on Google. It is this address that allows your ISP to connect you to the website.

Ordinarily, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) handles your DNS requests using servers in your own country. This permits the websites you visit to know where you are, and it allows those services to enforce geo-restrictions on you.

This is why you can't watch BBC iPlayer from outside of the UK. The BBC website can see that your DNS is being resolved outside of Britain, and it knows to automatically block you.

How to change DNS settings on your Samsung TV

If you want to unblock TV shows and movies on your Samsung TV, then the first thing that you need to do is to subscribe to a Smart DNS service. Check out our best smart DNS services page for a list of great providers. Having subscribed, you can enter the DNS address manually into your Samsung TV using the remote control.

To ensure that users cannot pass around the DNS address to friends and family, some providers ask users to register their home IP address with its Smart DNS service first.

Once you have registered your IP with the VPN's Smart DNS service, you are ready to follow the steps below to set it up on your TV:

  • Log in to your VPN provider's website and locate the Smart DNS address. It will be an IP address that looks like a string of numbers (for example, 192.42.5.44). Make a note of it so that you can enter it into your Samsung TV.
  • Turn on your Samsung TV and navigate to Menu > Settings  > Network > Network status .
  • When the automatic check finishes, click IP Settings .
  • Choose DNS setting and select Enter manually .
  • Enter the Smart DNS address provided by your VPN.

That is all there is to it! You have now set up a Smart DNS on your Samsung TV, you can start streaming content unavailable in your country. Check out our guide on how to change DNS settings for information about how to do this on other devices.

Please remember that your VPN's Smart DNS service may not work for every single country, so be sure to check with the VPN to find out which countries it unblocks (usually the UK, the US, and a few other places).

What is Smart DNS?

Smart DNS is a service for spoofing your location (pretending to be in a different country). It allows you to leverage a DNS resolver in a foreign country. As a result, you can use your Samsung TV to stream foreign content.

By manually altering the DNS settings in the menu of your Samsung TV to use a VPN's dynamic DNS server (Smart DNS) – you ensure your DNS requests exit in the same location as the content you want to stream. As a result, you can stream on websites and services that are usually blocked.

For more information, check out our what is DNS  page.

What are the best smart DNS services for Samsung TVs

If you haven't already got a Smart DNS service, check out the services below:

  • ExpressVPN - is the best smart DNS for Smasung TVs. It's fast, really easy to use, and unblocks pretty much everything.

In our testing we checked that all ExpressVPN plans work for Netflix. The one year plan is the best value : three months free and a 30 day risk-free trial.

  • CyberGhost VPN - is an excellent Smart DNS service. It's easy to use, is able to unblock Netflix and it's great value for money.
  • Surfshark - is the cheapest smart DNS service on our list. It's great for streaming and has a 30-day money back guarantee.
  • StrongVPN - is a great smart DNS service that allows users to use it on an unlimited number of devices at once.
  • CactusVPN - is a solid all round smart DNS service that is easy to use.

What are the advantages of changing DNS on your Samsung Smart TV?

As soon as you update your TV's DNS settings, you will gain access to online services that are usually geo-restricted where you live. As a result, you will be able to stream TV channels such as:

  • Amazon Prime
  • Disney Plus
  • Fox Sports Go
  • Netflix (regional content and originals)

Remember that your VPN may only provide access to content from certain regions. So be sure to check with the VPN provider to ensure that it can unblock the TV and streaming services you are interested in.

What Smart DNS services are good for Samsung TVs?

In 2024, standalone Smart DNS services are a rip-off. Therefore, it is much better to get a VPN subscription. By subscribing to a VPN, you can unblock content on your Samsung TV while also getting full use of the VPN with the following benefits:

  • Gain complete privacy on all of your devices (desktop, laptops, smartphones, tablets, routers).
  • Enable a full VPN tunnel to spoof the location of computers and mobile devices (to access foreign websites and services on those devices).
  • Connect to public Wi-Fi without fear of hackers or tracking.
  • Bypass websites blocked at work, in school, or on public Wi-Fi.
  • Download torrents without being tracked by your ISP.
  • Use the internet without being tracked by the government.
  • Bypass any online censorship imposed by the government.
  • Access websites and content from back home when you are on holiday.

The best Smart DNS service available on the market is ExpressVPN . ExpressVPN's Smart DNS service can unblock US and UK services, which makes it an extremely useful and versatile service to use on your Samsung TV. To find out more about Express, you can read our full ExpressVPN review . Alternatively, click the button below to visit ExpressVPN's website.

What is the difference between Smart DNS and VPN?

A few years ago, many internet users would get a subscription with a standalone Smart DNS service. This allowed those users to pick from a bunch of DNS servers located around the world.

These Smart DNS services were extremely popular because they allowed consumers to spoof their location elsewhere to stream foreign, geo-restricted content.

In 2024, the vast majority of people have given up using stand-alone Smart DNS services in favor of VPNs. This is because the cost of a VPN is equal to what people used to pay for Smart DNS – but a VPN gives you many more features and versatility.

Like a Smart DNS service, a VPN allows you to spoof your location. However, it also encrypts your data to ensure that your local network administrator or ISP can no longer monitor what you do online. It is this extra layer of encryption that makes a VPN much better than a Smart DNS service.

When you use a VPN nobody can tell what you are doing online.

The good news is that VPN services understand that setting up a VPN with smart TV can be a bit of a headache. To allow their subscribers to get the most out of their VPN subscription, some of those services throw in a Smart DNS service for free!

As a result, their subscribers get the use of a VPN and a Smart DNS service for the same price. With these kinds of VPNs available on the market, there really is no wonder that stand-alone Smart DNS services have gone out of business.

The best VPNs for Samsung TVs

VPN services will allow users to unblock content and improve online privacy on any device. Check out our Samsung TV VPNs page for a list of the best services or head over to our guide on how to set up a VPN on Samsung TV .

How else can I unblock content on my Samsung TV?

Smart DNS is by far the easiest way to unblock more content on a Samsung TV. However, it is not the only way. You can also use a VPN to pretend to be in a different country.

The benefit of a VPN is that you also gain complete privacy, which makes it a more secure way to unblock regional content. You will also get granular control over where you choose to connect, which will allow you to unlock even more content.

Unfortunately, you cannot install VPN software directly onto a Samsung TV. Instead, you will need to connect your TV to a computer using an ethernet cable. This will allow you to share the VPN connection from the computer to your TV.

Alternatively, you can set up the VPN connection directly on your router. By doing this, the VPN will automatically protect (and spoof the location of) all the devices in your home  – including your Samsung TV.

How to Find Samsung Smart TV (or any TV) IP Address Without Remote

samsung smart tv

Whether you want to assign static the IP address to your Smart TV or change the DNS , you need the remote to navigate to Network settings. However, if you’ve lost the remote or can’t find it at the moment, don’t worry it’s still not the end of the world. I will show you some of the easiest ways to find the IP address of your Samsung Smart TV (or any streaming device) without a remote. Let’s begin.

Find Samsung Smart TV IP Address

There are plenty of ways you can go about finding the IP address of any device connected to the router and you can do it on a computer, a smartphone, or even on your TV. The steps for figuring out the IP address will be similar to the steps listed below so you should be able to replicate it on any smart TV or streaming device.

1. On a Computer

If you want to find the IP address of your Samsung Smart TV from a Windows computer or a Mac, Angry IP Scanner is a decent choice. In fact, we have an in-depth guide on how to use Angry IP Scanner .

Step 1: Download and install the software on your computer, and run the application.

Step 2: Angry IP Scanner would automatically detect the IP range, you just have to press the Scan button to begin discovery. Even if it doesn’t you can go with 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.255.

Step 3: Your TV would show up on the list with the manufacturer name in the title.

If you have multiple Samsung phones or TV in your house, the application may pick up multiple devices and you may get confused which is the actual TV IP address. To filter out your TV from the rest, simply, right-click the IP, select open, and do a Ping test before and after powering on your TV. The ping command works as SONAR, i.e. it sends data packets from your computer to your TV. Ideally, when the TV is OFF, you will not get any ping replies.  If you still get a ping in return then it’s probably not your TV.

2. Smartphone

Fing is another popular network tool that allows you to discover devices connected to a network . The app is well-reputed and available for both Android and iOS which makes it adequate in this case.

Step 1: Install Fing on your Android or iOS smartphone from Play Store and App Store respectively.

Step 2: Connect your smartphone to the same network as the Smart TV and run the app.

Step 3: Go to the Devices tab and tap the Scan button on the top right.

The app would start scanning the network and show your devices in the list. You’ll find your Samsung Smart TV here.

manually set ip address samsung tv

Now, the app is smart enough to recognize and distinguish between a smartphone and a TV, however, if you have doubts, you can do a ping test on your TV by simply turning it OFF and then running the Ping test in the app. If you get a ping return, then it’s not your TV.

Most router these days would show you a list of all the devices connected to the network and you can check all the connected devices in the router console.

Step 1: Go to the router login page on a web browser from a desktop or a smartphone and enter the login in credentials.

Step 2: Navigate to connected devices and you’ll find your Samsung Smart TV. Every Router has a different interface and discovery mode. In my case, it failed to get the name and showed the TV as ‘ localhost ‘. That’s why I don’t recommend this method unless you absolutely have to. However, you can still try and ping the IP address of the TV while it is switched off to see if it pings back. If it does then it is probably not your TV.

You can also take a look at this guide on how to find the IP address of any device on the network .

4. Use your smartphone as a remote

Samsung Smart TVs have loads of awesome features and the SmartThings app is one of those. It lets you play TV sound on the computer, mirror your phone screen to the TV and even control the TV using your phone. Therefore, if you have lost TV remote, you can use your smartphone as a remote to control your TV and find its IP address by navigating to Network settings. Follow the steps.

Step 1: Install the app on your smartphone, you can do this on any Android or iOS device.

Step 2: Log in using a Samsung account or create one here .

Step 3: Now, tap the + button and add the TV to the app by following the on-screen instructions.

Step 4: After setting everything up, you’ll be able to navigate using the touchpad and the buttons on the screen.

manually set ip address samsung tv

Step 5: To find out your TV’s IP address, navigate to Settings > General > Network > Network Status > IP Settings .

manually set ip address samsung tv

The above app SmartThings works only with Samsung Smart TVs, however, if you use any other Smart TV or streaming device, there is probably an app that lets you control the TV with your phone. You can install the appropriate app for your device and navigate to find the IP address in the Network Settings.

  • Android TV- Android TV Remote Control ( Android | iOS )
  • LG Smart TV- LG TV PLUS ( Android | iOS )
  • Roku- Roku App ( Android | iOS )
  • Firestick- Amazon Fire TV App ( Android | iOS )
  • Apple TV- Apple TV App ( iOS )

Closing Words

These were some of the ways with which you can find the IP address of your Smart TV even without a remote. You can pretty much find the IP address of any device with these methods. Let me know if you face any problem with these methods in the comments below.

How to Check Your Samsung TV’s IP Address

manually set ip address samsung tv

Evan Gower With over a decade of experience in digital publishing. Evan leads our team with a keen eye for emerging tech trends. Read more May 17, 2020

Like any other device, every smart TV has an IP address. However, many people get confused when asked to check their TV’s IP address, simply because they can’t see it on the TV itself. You have to use your phone or computer instead.

How to Check Your Samsung TV's IP Address

In this article, we’ll show you a couple of ways to check your Samsung TV’s IP address. All you have to do is choose the method that’s most convenient.

Check IP Address Using Your Phone

We’ll start with the easiest method. You’re probably holding a smartphone in your hand right now, so all you have to do is download the Smart Things app. This popular app allows you to mirror your phone screen to the Samsung TV. In essence, you’re using your phone as a remote control.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a Samsung phone, as the app is available both for Android and iOS devices. Moreover, it’s free.

Before you start, make sure that your phone and your TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see your Samsung TV. Once you’ve downloaded the app, here’s what you have to do:

  • Log in to your Samsung account or create a new one.
  • Tap on the Plus button to add a new device.
  • Select your Samsung TV.
  • Go to the Settings.
  • Open General Settings.
  • Select Network.
  • Select Network Status.
  • Open the IP Settings.
  • You’ll then get to see your Samsung TV’s IP address.

There you have it! If you already had the Smart Things app, it won’t take more than a couple of seconds. On the other hand, if you haven’t used the app before, we hope you’ll find it useful. You can connect your phone with many devices in your house and use it to control them even when you’re not at home.

check samsung tv ip address

Check IP Address Using Your Router

As you may know, the router shows you a list of all devices connected to your network, as well as their IP addresses. You can check them either from your phone or your computer. Here’s how to do it:

  • Open your browser and go to the Router Login Page.
  • Log in with your credentials.
  • Open the List of connected devices.
  • You should now see its IP address.

That’s all you have to do! However, bear in mind that the list may look different on each router. Some routers aren’t able to recognize every device. Instead, they may label them as “local host”.

A great thing about the router is that you can use it to check the IP addresses of multiple devices at the same time. Therefore, if you need to check more than one IP address, this is the fastest way to do so.

Check IP Address Using Discovering Tools

Nowadays, there are a lot of apps you can use to find out what devices are connected to a particular network. We’ve used Fing, a well-known and trustworthy app. Of course, there are a lot of other apps you can try. Just be careful and always read the reviews because some of them could be scams.

If you decide to use Fing, you can download it to your Android or iOS device for free. Again, before you start, make sure that your Samsung TV and your phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Here’s what you have to do next:

  • Open the Fing app.
  • Tap on Devices.
  • Tap on Scan.
  • After a couple of seconds, you should get a list of all devices connected to your Wi-Fi.
  • Under each device, you can see their IP address.
  • Just find your Samsung TV on the list and read its address.

That’s it! Most people use this app to check whether there are any unknown devices connected to their Wi-Fi network. It’s good to have this app if you suspect that someone is using your Wi-Fi without your knowledge.

Moreover, you can use this app to check your Internet speed quickly. The app also notifies you when the Internet is down in your area.

Get to Know Your Address

In certain situations, it’s handy to know your IP address. Some people like to write it down or even try to learn it by heart. But there’s no need to memorize all those numbers, as you can check them in a couple of seconds.

Have you tried any of the methods outlined above? Which one seems the quickest to you? Let us know in the comments section below.

How to Change your Samsung TV to IPv4

Changing your Samsung TV to use IPv4 instead of the newer IPv6 protocol can help resolve connectivity issues and allow access to IPv4-only resources. As an electronics expert, let me walk you through this process in detail.

IPv4 vs. IPv6 – What‘s the Difference?

First, let‘s quickly cover the core differences between these two Internet Protocol versions:

IPv4 has been the dominant networking protocol since the 1980s. It uses 32-bit addresses, providing approximately 4 billion unique addresses globally. An example IPv4 address is 192.168.1.100.

IPv6 was created to solve the shortage of IPv4 addresses. It uses 128-bit addresses, allowing for 340 trillion unique addresses. An example IPv6 address is 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.

Key IPv6 Benefits:

  • Massive increase in available address space
  • Integrated IPsec security
  • Simplified header format
  • Improved multicast routing

However, IPv4 remains widely used. According to Google, approximately 22% of users access Google over IPv6 as of 2022. Many networks still rely on IPv4, so disabling IPv6 on your devices can resolve connectivity issues.

Checking for IPv6 Connectivity Issues

Before disabling IPv6 on your Samsung TV, I recommend performing some connectivity tests to see if IPv6 is working properly:

On your TV:

  • Go to Settings > General > Network > Network Status
  • Select View Details and note IPv6 address (if shown)
  • Run connection tests for IPv6 networks

From your computer:

  • Open command prompt and run "ping -6 [your TV‘s IPv6 address]"
  • If you get replies, IPv6 is working. If not, there is a connectivity issue.

Fixing the root cause is ideal, but if needed you can disable IPv6 as a workaround.

Disabling IPv6 on Your Samsung TV

If you wish to completely disable IPv6, here are the steps:

1. Using your remote, go to Settings > General > Network > Network Settings 2. Navigate to Expert Settings (may need to enter password) 3. Select IP Settings 4. Choose IPv6 5. Change the setting from Enable to Disable

This will stop your TV from using IPv6 entirely. Keep in mind this may cause issues reaching IPv6-only resources.

Enabling IPv4 via DHCP

Once IPv6 is disabled, you need to enable IPv4:

1. Under IP Settings, select IPv4 2. Change the setting from Disable to Enable 3. Select DHCP as the configuration method

Using DHCP allows your TV to automatically get its IPv4 configuration from your router. This is the simplest setup and recommended for most users.

Manually Configuring IPv4

You can also manually configure IPv4 if needed:

1. Under IP Settings, enable IPv4 2. Select Manual as the configuration method 3. Enter your desired IPv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers 4. Select OK to save

For example, you could enter:

  • IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.101
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
  • DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Manual configuration is only recommended if you have networking expertise. Mistakes can prevent connectivity.

Restarting Your TV

Once you have configured IPv4 and disabled IPv6, restart your Samsung TV for the changes to fully apply.

You may need to re-run network setup on your TV after this process. Check for connectivity issues and troubleshoot as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some common questions on this topic:

Will disabling IPv6 impact my internet connectivity?

It shouldn‘t, as long as your router and ISP support IPv4. Most networks still rely on IPv4. But some very new networks are IPv6-only, so connectivity may suffer.

What if I don‘t see IPv4 options on my Samsung TV?

Some older TV models don‘t support disabling IPv6 or manually configuring IPv4. Your best option may be using a router that supports IPv4 only.

Should I disable IPv6 permanently?

I recommend leaving it enabled unless you have a specific need. More and more networks and content will require IPv6 in the future.

What if I can‘t connect after making these changes?

First reboot your TV and router. If issues persist, reset your TV network settings to defaults and re-configure IPv4 via DHCP. Check cabling and router configuration as well.

I hope this guide helps explain how to switch your Samsung TV over to the IPv4 protocol. Please let me know if you have any other questions! I‘m happy to help walk you through the process.

Changing Your DNS on Smart TVs - Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hisense and others

Using a Smart TV to access the masses of live streaming services and video on demand channels is becoming the simplest method of watching our favourite TV shows and movies.

It’s the ideal system. Everything you want to watch is available directly on the best and biggest screen in the house. You don’t need to plug in your laptop, any kind of streaming box or stick, or cast or screen-share from your phone or tablet.

However, when it comes to watching geo-blocked content, you’ll need some kind of workaround to navigate the regional blockades.

Today, we’re looking at how to utilize a Smart DNS service, and how to change DNS (Samsung, LG, Sony, and more) settings on your Smart TV, where the international switching is managed.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name Server .

Domain name servers translate an IP address (Internet Protocol) into the name you see in the URL bar. The main reason for this is that it’s faster to use the address than using a series of numbers.

An IP address is a numeric label assigned to a device connected to any computer network. The IP address you connect to the Internet (usually determined by your WiFi router) can be dynamic (changeable by your service provider upon connection or start-up) or static (stays the same—also called fixed or permanent).

How do I change my Smart TV DNS?

Deep in your TV settings (well, fairly deep…), you’ll find a range of network settings that include your IP and DNS server settings. We’re going to give you a run-through of where the settings you need are on a selection of different brand TVs, and where you’ll find the replacement DNS addresses that allow access to blocked services.

Sadly, not all Smart TVs allow you to change your DNS settings. We’ll do our best to provide some insight into the most popular that do, with step-by-step guides to configure Samsung TV, Sony, Panasonic, LG and a few others.

It’s up to you to track down the best DNS for Samsung Smart TV or any other brand, but before you do, we’d suggest you read up on how much more efficient and easy to set up StreamLocator is for your Smart TV. You’ll be glad you did.

Acquiring your Smart DNS settings

When you sign up for Smart DNS, you’ll provide them with your IP address, or they might automatically track your IP to keep you connected.

Registering your IP address with your Smart DNS service

For each of the different providers, there’ll be a slightly different way to access the settings you need. They will, however, be quite similar so the suggested route should help you get where you need to be.

  • Log in to your Smart DNS account using your home connection.
  • Navigate to your IP registration / Register my IP address / Validate my IP address / Check in a new address option.
  • If it shows ‘ Registered ’ or ‘ Validated ’, then everything’s good to go. If not, you’ll need to input your current IP address or allow the service software to access your IP address. There could also be an option to register or validate additional IP address (at work, for example, or if you’re connecting using a VPN) where you may want to use the service.
  • Many providers will have an ‘ Automatically register my IP address ’ setting. If this is you, then the provider should automatically track your IP address and update any changes. You may also have an option to update your IP address using the service’s app (if it has one).
  • Your Smart DNS service will provide a single or selection of new DNS locations that you can use to access the blocked regions you need.

Make a note of your IP address

Before switching DNS settings, it’s a good idea to make a note of your existing server. Most Smart TVs will have an ‘Automatic’ option, which will locate your IP address for you. If that’s the case with your TV, then there’s nothing to worry about.

Don’t forget to change your region

The whole idea behind changing your DNS is to access international TV services. So, when you’ve switched your DNS, make sure you don’t forget to change your TV’s region settings . To watch the channels you want, you’ll need to switch to the UK, US, or any other location you need.

Setting up Samsung TV DNS addresses

How to setup a Samsung TV to work with your new Smart DNS setting:

  • Go to Menu > Settings menu > Network > Network status
  • Click Network status
  • When the check is complete, click IP Settings
  • Choose the DNS setting and select Enter manually
  • Enter the Smart DNS location provided by your chosen service

How to change region on Samsung TV

  • Go to Menu > System > Setup > Smart Hub Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy
  • On this page, press the shown buttons in the following order “Mute – Return – Volume Up – Channel Up – Mute”
  • You should now see a list of countries from which to make your choice.

Setting up LG TV DNS addresses

How to setup an LG TV to work with your new Smart DNS setting:

Go to Menu > Settings > All settings

Scroll to Network and select Network Connection > Set expert

  • In the IP Mode area, click Dynamic and choose Manual
  • Enter the Smart DNS setting provided by your chosen service

How to change region on LG TV

Go to Smart TV Setting > LG Smart World Settings > Manual

  • Pick the preferred region for your needs.

Setting up Sony Smart TV DNS addresses

How to setup a Sony TV to work with your new Smart DNS setting: Go to Home > Setup > Network

  • Click Network Setup
  • Click Expert
  • Click WiFi and then choose your WiFi connection

Click Advanced options > IP settings > Static

  • Enter your IP address for your home network (it may already be filled in automatically)
  • The Gateway address is usually your router address (also usually automatically completed)
  • The Network prefix length is almost always 24
  • For DNS 1 , enter your existing DNS setting
  • For DNS 2 , enter the new Smart DNS setting

How to change region on Sony Smart TV

Unlike some of the other systems, Sony TVs will update the region, once you’ve correctly switched to your new Smart DNS address.

Go to Settings > Network > Refresh internet content

  • Select the All Apps menu at the bottom of your TV screen
  • You should see the newly available location-specific apps

Setting up Panasonic Smart TV DNS addresses

How to setup a Panasonic TV to work with your new Smart DNS setting:

  • Go to Setup > Player settings > Network > Network settings > IP address/DNS settings
  • Turn DNS Auto Configuration off
  • Enter your new Smart DNS address in the primary and secondary DNS setting

How to change region on Panasonic Smart TV

Sadly, Panasonic Smart TVs are set to the region they’re sold in. You can access apps with international catalogues such as Netflix and view the different streams using your Smart DNS, but you won’t be able to access native apps to your preferred location.

Setting up other Smart TVs, such as Toshiba, Hisense and more

  • Typically, you’ll navigate through your TV’s settings for the Network options.
  • In the Network setup or configuration , you’ll need to select custom or manual setup .
  • Finally, your Primary DNS should be changed to the Smart DNS server settings .

The smartest option for your Smart TV is StreamLocator

The amount of work you have to undertake to switch your Smart TV’s DNS is often complex and still isn’t guaranteed to get you where you need to be.

With StreamLocator, the only thing you have to do is switch your WiFi network option.

Once that’s taken care of, there’s no region to change, as everything is managed automatically by our smart hub.

By far, this is the simplest way possible to access almost all of the international services and streams on a Smart TV.

If you’d like to know more about how it works with your make and model, have a chat with one of our support team . They’ll give you the complete rundown and let you know how well it will perform the tasks you need.

StreamLocator – plug and play

Because StreamLocator is a plug and play system, there’s no complicated action to undertake. Plug it in, switch your WiFi option, and that’s that.

Can I install VPN on Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony, or other Smart TV?

Very few of the VPN services will work directly with your Smart TV. You may be able to unblock Netflix or some of the streaming services using a VPN, but it still means switching the DNS settings in your TV.

You could install the VPN on your PC or Mac and use it as WiFi hotspot, but that’s really quite cumbersome and impractical.

The third option is to install a VPN on your router. Once again, this is a complicated process that should only be undertaken by someone with the appropriate knowledge.

And, if you’re looking for a free VPN for your Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic, or other Smart TV, don’t bother. They aren’t competitive enough to provide the amount of servers required to avoid being blocked by the major providers.

SmartThings Wifi manual IP address setup (PPPoE and static IP)

A SmartThings Wifi Hub sitting on a glass shelf

SmartThings Wifi provides corner-to-corner Wi-Fi coverage for your home and lets you control all of your smart devices. If you tried to set up SmartThings Wifi   and received a message that said it can't connect to the internet, you will need to check your network setup and manually set your IP address. There are two ways to connect manually: on a PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet), which is used on Ethernet connections, or a static IP address, which may be used in some homes, hotels, and workplaces.

Set up using a PPPoE

When you use the SmartThings app to set up SmartThings Wifi, it should automatically connect. However, if you receive a message that SmartThings Wifi can’t connect to the internet, you will need to enter your IP address manually. If you’re using a PPPoE, follow these steps to manually set your IP address:

On your phone, tap Set IP address manually when prompted, and then select PPPoE from the drop-down menu under Connection type. Enter your ID and password, and then tap Done .

PPPoE selected under Connection type

Note: You will need to enter a PPPoE ID and password. If you don’t have this information, contact your internet service provider.

Set up using a static IP

Some homes, hotels, or offices use a static IP address that never changes. This is different from most devices that use dynamic IPs, which change constantly. You will need to contact the network administrator and request your IP and WAN settings.

On your phone, tap Set IP address manually when prompted. Enter the IP and other settings listed, and then tap Done .

A list of Static IP information

Reboot the modem

The first thing you should do if you are unable to connect to SmartThings Wifi is reboot the modem. Unplug the modem and SmartThings Wifi, and wait 2 minutes for both devices to fully power off. Then, plug them back in.

Next, verify that one end of the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the IN port on the SmartThings Wifi hub and that the other end is also securely connected to the modem. Make sure you are using the included Ethernet cable. If you still can’t connect, try using another Ethernet cable that supports up to 1 Gbps.

Note: Some modems require power cycling to assign an IP to a new device.
