What Is a Project Evaluation Template?

A project evaluation template is a fillable form that provides you with a framework for retroactively and proactively assessing your project’s effectiveness. Use the form to capture your project’s highlights, challenges, lessons learned, and post-project tasks.

It’s crucial to have a method in place for assessing the effectiveness of your projects, so you can ensure that you’ve met the project deliverables, outlined the post-project tasks, and enumerated lessons learned. By following this process, you can deliver future projects successfully. Without having this evaluative structure in place, you risk losing valuable time, siloing teams, and implementing nothing but one-off projects.

By using a project evaluation template, you can increase your productivity, proactivity, and project success rate.

You can modify project evaluation templates to meet your specific project’s needs. Though project evaluation templates may vary, they typically include the following components:

  • Project Title: Enter the name of the project you are evaluating.
  • Project Overview: Provide a high-level overview of the project’s original goals and objectives, criteria for success, and a comparison of the planned expectations vs. actual execution.
  • Project Highlights: List project highlights, including major accomplishments, what went well, what could use improvement, and what would work for future projects.
  • Project Challenges: Capture the project’s challenges, including areas for improvement, key problem areas, and any technical challenges.
  • Post-Project Tasks: Write down any post-project tasks that you should perform in order to improve the project or ensure that you’ve accounted for all the objectives.
  • Lessons Learned: List the lessons learned, including what you discovered during the planning, execution, and delivery phases.

Additionally, some project evaluation templates frequently include the following post-project evaluative components:

  • Moderator: If you have a post-project discussion about the project, enter the name of the meeting’s moderator.
  • Date Prepared: Set the date for the project meeting or for the delivery of the project-evaluation report.
  • Participants: Enter the names of the team members who are attending the post-project evaluation.
  • Future Considerations: Based on lessons learned from the launch of this particular project, write down things to consider regarding future projects.
  • Action Plan: Provide an action plan (or a list of action items) that identifies the project deliverables and any outstanding tasks.
  • Key Performance Indicators: List any KPIs that you used, or plan to use, to evaluate the project’s success (e.g., output KPIs, input KPIs, process KPIs, qualitative KPIs, etc.).
  • Key Takeaways: Write a summary of the project’s key takeaways and how they relate to the success of future projects.

Assessing Student Project Work

Techniques to evaluate progress and ensure success

Assess Project Work

Project work challenges students to think beyond the boundaries of the classroom, helping them develop the skills, behaviors, and confidence necessary for success in the 21st-century. Designing learning environments that help students question, analyze, evaluate, and extrapolate their plans, conclusions, and ideas, leading them to higher–order thinking, requires feedback and evaluation that goes beyond a letter or number grade. The term “authentic assessment” is used to describe assessment that evaluates content knowledge as well as additional skills like creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation.

Authentic assessment documents the learning that occurs during the project-building process and considers the real-world skills of collaboration, problem solving, decision making, and communication. Since project work requires students to apply knowledge and skills throughout the project-building process, you will have many opportunities to assess work quality, understanding, and participation from the moment students begin working.

For example, your evaluation can include tangible documents like the project vision, storyboard, and rough draft, verbal behaviors such as participation in group discussions and sharing of resources and ideas, and non-verbal cognitive tasks such as risk taking and evaluation of information. You can also capture snapshots of learning throughout the process by having students complete a project journal, a self-assessment, or by making a discussion of the process one component of the final presentation.

Developing Assessment

As you design the project, it is helpful to begin with the end in mind. What performances do you want to see? Then, determine exactly how students will demonstrate each performance as they build a product or solve a problem to complete the task.

Most of our assessment focuses on content mastery. Techniques we are all familiar with include the evaluation of the final product and having students complete quizzes or tests. Other benchmarks for content mastery you can use include the number of citations a student references, amount and quality of research, use of experts, validity and effectiveness of arguments, meeting the topic, and answering the essential question.

Completing complex authentic projects that require collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and innovation helps prepare students for increasingly complex life and work environments. Effective communication in the 21st-century requires that students can effectively express themselves in writing, verbally, and visually. Be sure to assess the quality of writing, including ideas, vocabulary, fluency, organization, and conventions, as well as the use of media and overall design. Since a project is a collaborative effort that occurs over time, include evaluation components that consider teamwork, organization, planning, and behavior.

Questions for Students

Content Knowledge

  • What new content did you learn while working on this project?
  • Did you know more or less than you expected?
  • What surprised you?
  • What else would you like to know about the topic?

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • How did your work and actions contribute to your team’s success?
  • What was the hardest part of about working in a team?
  • What was the best part?

Technology & Communication

  • What new skills did you learn?
  • What else do you want to learn how to do?

Creating Rubrics

Because many performances cannot easily be quantified, you want to be as specific about your expectations as possible. Creating a rubric for the final product and various components of project work can ensure a more accurate, specific, and useful assessment.

A rubric is an authentic assessment tool that:

  • Provides clear expectations for a project.
  • Examines the product as well as the entire project-building process.
  • Enumerates the performances on which students will be evaluated.
  • Explains what constitutes excellence during the project process.
  • Helps students understand what they need to do to excel.
  • Helps remove subjectivity and bias from the evaluation process.

Sharing and clarifying the performances that will be assessed during a project removes mystery from the evaluation process, helping students focus on specific actions they can take to improve their performance.

Involving Students in Assessment

Involving students in project assessment boosts motivation, improves meta-cognition, and promotes self-directed learning. Students who are asked to reflect on their own performance learn to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and are able to pinpoint where to focus their efforts to see the greatest results.

You might have students provide feedback and critiques by asking them to keep a project journal or work log, evaluate themselves using the project rubric, and answer additional self-assessment questions. An open-ended self-assessment allows students to share learning that occurred during the process that was not included in the rubric. As they reflect and evaluate, students should describe their learning and contemplate decisions they have made individually and as a team.

You may also want to have students complete a peer evaluation for components of the project, such as the project presentation. Students can also evaluate the writing, design, and effective communication during the creation and presentation of the final product. Combining your assessment of the process and the end product with student reflections and evaluations will help you create a more accurate assessment of student performance.

Audience Assessment

Authentic project work should reflect the questions, problems, and needs of the world beyond the classroom. If the work is something that has real value, make sure there is a wider audience for the final product presentation. Having students create web pages to display their ideas and findings enables their products to easily reach a wider audience. If the project deliverable involves an oral presentation, invite peers, family, or community members to attend.

You may also want to invite subject matter experts in the area of project work to participate in the final product’s assessment. Developing public-service announcements? Invite employees from a local advertising agency. Designing a new school? One of your classroom parents may just be an architect.

student project evaluation form

If students know that other people will be relying on and judging the information and ideas they propose, their motivation to work hard and take risks increases. If you involve the audience in the assessment process, be sure to provide a rubric or other guide to ensure the feedback they provide is pertinent to project goals.

The complexity of student projects makes assessment that captures both the final product and the learning that occurs along the way an intricate and sometimes difficult task. Summative assessment can be an effective component of an overall assessment strategy. Authentic assessment can be used during the project-building process. Rubrics, ideally developed with the help of the students, can help to evaluate how successfully students address specific goals and performances. Self-reflection gives students a means to determine what they think they have learned and how well they have learned it. Crafting assessment strategies that combine all of these methods helps us gain a much better understanding of the learning that takes place during the entire process.

Teaching excellence & educational innovation, instructors: multiple instructors course: 51-201: basic typography communication design, 51-711/712: graduate design studio, and other studio-based courses, school of design, college of fine arts assessment: forms for evaluating student projects graduate design studio beginning typography.

Many students in studio-based design courses believe that design choices are subjective and therefore cannot be evaluated using objective forms of assessment. These forms were created to provide students with objective, clearly articulated criteria for the variety of dimensions in which studio-based projects are assessed and graded.

Implementation:

Faculty developed evaluation forms for the studio-based design courses that they were teaching. Then they shared these forms with each other so that the evaluation forms remained consistent for each course. The criteria on the forms appear in the course syllabi so that students are aware of them from the beginning of the course, and the forms are used to evaluate student work at mid-semester and the end of the semester.

Students have more realistic expectations of how their projects will be graded. There are fewer instances of students contesting the final grades on their projects.

Although students are aware of the criteria that will be used to assess their work, they do not always pay attention to these criteria for each assignment. It is not always easy to clearly communicate to the students that these are the criteria that will be used to evaluate their work.

A project may be referred to as the academic requirement that students need to create and pass in exchange of a grade percentage. Also, it may be the specific work layout that an entity needs to do for their clients. These two may differ in purpose and processes, but the variables involved in both project descriptions have something in common.

  • the effort being exerted by an individual in the work functions that he or she is tasked to do;
  • the contribution of the team member in the success of the group and the entire project;
  • the important inputs of a team member that have helped in the improvement of the processes of the project and the implementation of other project activities;

  • if there is any, the weaknesses of the specific team member that made some project phases to be harder than how it is supposed to be.

Workforce Evaluation

Other than the individual evaluation of the people involved in the project, the entire workforce must also be collectively evaluated through the following:

  • the dynamics of the team as an entire entity,
  • the ability of the team leader to motivate his or her members to do their specific functions the best way possible,

Evaluation of the Project Proposal

Right before a specific project proposal starts, its proposal must first be evaluated as it will serve as the foundation of the entire project. A project proposal evaluation form includes the following information to be assessed:

  • the entity that is proposing a specific project;
  • the date of submission of the project proposal;
  • the proposed date of the project implementation;
  • the processes that are needed for a project to materialize; and
  • the content of the project, which includes the preparations for the project, the feasibility and sustainability of the project, and the possibilities of achieving the project deliverable.

Importance of a Project Evaluation

A project proposal is important for the following reasons:

  • it allows the assessment of the entire project as a whole,
  • it oversees all the details of the project,
  • it helps assess the work being applied to the entire project, and
  • it creates awareness to all the processes of the project and which of these processes are effective and efficient.

Student Evaluation Form

What is a student evaluation form.

A student evaluation is a document used to measure a student’s academic performance and progress. It typically includes a series of questions that allow teachers or peers to evaluate each student’s performance, behavior, and learning process.

What Do You Write in a Student Evaluation?

A student evaluation is a comprehensive review of a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall performance. The evaluation should include examples of student performance, as well as feedback on the student’s participation, engagement, and ability to effectively apply concepts.

The assessment should also provide suggestions for improvement and opportunities for the student to grow in their abilities and understanding.

Types of Student Evaluation

There are different types of student evaluations, each serving a specific purpose. Some common types of student evaluations include:

Formative evaluation : This type of assessment takes place at every step of the learning process and provides feedback to guide students through their learning journey.

Summative evaluation : This type of assessment happens at the end of each learning unit or course. It’s a final review of student performance and comprehension.

Self-evaluation : This type of evaluation encourages students to reflect on their learning to identify their strengths and areas for improvement.

Peer evaluation : This type of evaluation involves students providing feedback to their peers, promoting collaboration, and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Benefits of Student Evaluation

Student evaluation offers several benefits for both students and educational institutions:

For students : Student evaluations provide feedback that can help students identify their strengths and weaknesses, set learning goals, and improve their academic performance.

For educational institutions : Student evaluations provide valuable data that can be used to improve teaching methods, curriculum development, and overall student learning outcomes.

About this printout

Students use this printout to evaluate both their own performance in a group as well as the actions of their group members.

Teaching with this printout

More ideas to try, related resources.

Before beginning a project in which students evaluate each other and themselves, make students aware they will complete evaluation forms.  Explain to students that the purpose of this form is to make their project more enjoyable because group members will be accountable for their participation. Share with the students the printout to familiarize them with actions and attitudes they will observe in their group members.  Remind students that their group members will be looking for these same characteristics in their behavior.  Include specific examples that exhibit positive participation.  For example, model for the students statements that show respectful listening, such as “I understand what you are saying, but I believe we would have more successful trying _____.”   During the project encourage students to complete in either journals or group discussions reflective statements such as “Today I contributed ____.” or “Our interactions could be improved by _____.” At the end of the project prior to students completing the printout, express to students that their responses will be not be shared with group members so that peer pressure does not cause false evaluations.  Stress that you are expecting students to be honest and truthful in their evaluations.  Encourage students to recall their reflective statements completed during the project and to consider if they achieved the project’s goal, if they worked well as a group, and what changes they would make to increase their group’s effectiveness.  After reading the evaluations, determine what actions will be targeted next.

  • Routinely ask students to self-evaluate through journals, evaluation forms, questioning, and conferring with individual students.  This gives them practice in learning to monitor their own behaviors and increases their self-awareness.
  • Alter skills or add additional traits you want students to consider.  For example, if you have specific checkpoints for the group work, you could add these to the evaluation and ask if students met these deadlines successfully.
  • After your students have used this assessment tool, ask them for suggestions to improve this evaluation.  For example, if students felt they already learned how to respect each other’s ideas, then ask what other skill they feel the class should work on when they undertake their next group project.

Self reflection without the awkward class silence

Self-evaluating on the spot can be tough. The next time you need your students to reflect on their progress—be it for a project or the full semester—give them space and guidance with this template.

Student self evaluation form FAQs:

How does a student self evaluation form help my students.

Getting to know yourself, your goals, shortcomings, and strengths can be tricky—to say the least. Help your students reflect in a structured way with this form.

You can completely customize it to fit your students’ needs. Typeforms ask one question at a time, which will give them time to think about their answers. The form guides them through their evaluation like a conversation would and allows them to reflect on their work.

What are the benefits of using a form for self evaluation for my students?

Real self evaluation goes beyond scales and ticking boxes. This student self evaluation form asks questions like you would in a real conversation, which means they need to reflect on their answer. They give themselves a 7 out of 10 for teamwork? Follow up with a question that lets them explain why they’re such good team players.

But you also benefit from using an online form for their self evaluation. No more handling paperwork and storing it away: you can link this form directly to tools like Google Drive or Dropbox, so their answers are stored away safely.

However, these schools also need to assess how well these students are performing in their studies. A school is only as good as the students it produces, so all schools have to make certain that their students are of top quality by evaluating all of them.

One of the things that can help out these schools is the use of the proper Student Evaluation Forms.

The Different Types of Student Evaluation Forms

There are many variations of these types of forms that a lot of schools use to guarantee that they properly assess how well a student is doing in his or her classes, and by giving the proper feedback to that student. Here are some examples of these types of forms:

For Student Performance Evaluations

  • Student Employee Performance Evaluation Forms are mainly used by those establishments that hire students as employees. This is to check if that student is able to progress to a high degree of work, while at the same time being able  to manage his or her studies without any drop of quality.

For Student Self-Evaluations

  • Student Self-Evaluation Forms are the kind of forms that are worked on by students when they need to see how well they’re performing overall during their classes. This is to help them see what their weaknesses and strengths are and help them in letting their teachers know as to what they can work on together.
  • Group Work Student Self-Evaluation Forms are made specifically for assessing how a student does in certain group works or group projects. Group projects require a degree of participation from all members, and a student who’s a part of a group uses these forms to assess himself or herself to see how much he or she contributed to the project or assignment.
  • Student Product Self-Evaluation Forms are mainly used by students when they need to evaluate themselves on a certain project or homework that they were asked to work on by a teacher. This helps them in seeing how well they performed and how well they think the output was and determine if they were satisfied with it or not.

For Student Course Evaluations

  • Student Course Evaluation Questionnaire Forms are mainly used when students need to properly assess a course they were taking through the use of a questionnaire. Questionnaires are a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study and it’s one of the best ways to evaluate any course.

For Student Presentations

  • Student Group Presentation Evaluation Forms are the kind of forms that are worked on by students who participate in group presentations. These are properly assessed by teachers who witness these presentations and see if the point of the presentation was properly conveyed and if the entire thing was executed well or not.
  • Student Oral Presentation Evaluation Forms are for those teachers who need to check how well these students did during their oral presentations. Oral presentations are sort of like written orientations in terms of structure, but instead of using a pen and paper, the student uses his communication skills. And presentations based on how well a student is able to orally present the subject must be properly evaluated.

For Student Work Evaluations

  • Student Work Performance Evaluation Forms are utilized by those teachers when they need to see how well a student is performing any kind of work that they were assigned to do. It could be that the student was assigned to research work, group works, work projects, and just about anything else that a teacher needs to assess.
  • Student Field Work Evaluation Forms are mainly used to see how well these students do during their field work. Field work is practical work conducted by a researcher in the natural environment, rather than in a laboratory or office. So these are usually projects or researches that students are required to do outside the classroom (For example, social experiments that require multiple interactions). And these field works must be properly assessed with regard to how well they were done and how well the results were.

The Importance of These Student Evaluation Forms

If you were the head of any kind of educational establishment, even you’d want to know how all your students are doing, right? This is exactly why there are Student Evaluation Forms that help out any school in checking out how each and every one of their students are performing on a daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly basis.

As mentioned before, schools are only as good as the kind of students that they produce. If these schools want to be known as the best, or at least one of the best, then they have to make sure that their students are performing at rates acceptable or excellent. These evaluation forms can really help out if ever there’s a student who’s having difficulties.

Let’s say that a head teacher sees that a student is having lots of difficulties in a particular subject. That head teacher can refer that student for a counseling session or even extra lessons so that student may improve his or her performance.

So not only is this beneficial for the school, but for the students as well. It helps them see the aspects where they’re at their weakest and it’s up to them if they want to work on it or not. The point is that the school is able to point these strengths and weaknesses out through the use of these forms.
