Voicethread new assignments: improved student experience, grading features and course organization.

Student using VoiceThread New Assignments image

VoiceThread is a video-based discussion tool available in Blackboard that can be used to encourage student discussion and build community in asynchronous learning settings. The conversations are not live; they take place whenever and wherever it’s convenient for students to participate.

VoiceThread is rolling out its new Assignments interface that makes VoiceThread easier to use, provides more control for instructors, helps deliver better feedback to students, and other performance enhancements.

Your VoiceThread content will no longer appear on the VoiceThread home page. Instructors are now able to create Assignments, and the VoiceThread will live in that Assignment. This helps instructors organize content so that students can easily identify the Assignment workspace.

When creating the Assignment, instructors will be able to choose the activity students are required to perform in VoiceThread.

  • Create – students are required to create a VoiceThread using a video image or presentation
  • Comment   – students are required to contribute a comment on a VoiceThread
  • Watch – students must watch or listen to an entire VoiceThread

Additionally, each activity has tabs that enable instructors to define additional conditions and options within the context of the assignment, for example enabling comment threading, comment moderation, playback preferences, and other settings. Students will no longer need to remember to change settings or need to be taught how to share, comment or create.

Over three hundred courses in UIC currently use VoiceThread, which means that thousands of students, in a variety of courses, may benefit from the improved experience of the new assignments.

New Grader Heading link Copy link

New Grader Screenshot

The new Grader was developed to make grading faster, monitor student activity, identify which students have submitted, have work in progress or if no attempts have been made. Instructors have the option to unsubmit a student’s attempt so a student can resubmit the assignment for another attempt. Graded assignments will appear in a separate tab to illustrate which students have been graded helping instructors stay organized.

Enhanced Student Experience Heading link Copy link

Student interface screenshot

The VoiceThread student experience has been redesigned with an intuitive interface that is meant to provide clarity on what students need to do, how to do it, and when they need to do it.

  • The Assignment sidebar appears with call to action buttons with clear commands, providing students with step-by-step instructions.
  • The sidebar contains full details including a published due date, grading style, and submission status.

Student Gallery is a new feature that can be enabled in Assignments, which allows students to view and give feedback on other students’ work once they have submitted their own work. Instructors no longer need to create a link in Blackboard to a course view in VoiceThread and train students how to find the relevant coursework.

None of your past assignments or VoiceThreads will break. You and your students will start seeing the upgraded interfaces described, but no work will be lost, and everyone can continue completing and grading existing assignments without interruption.

Keep in mind that old assignments will retain old features and policies. To take advantage of all new policies and features, you will need to build a new assignment.

Using new assignments is optional now but effective June 30, 2021 all courses will be automatically updated to New Assignments .

How to Grade a VoiceThread Assignment

Note: The RABB GPS School does not grade assignments in VoiceThread. Please talk to a learning designer.

For this example, we will be grading a VoiceThread Assignment that requires students to comment on a VoiceThread that the instructor posted. First, you will scroll down to a VoiceThread assignment that needs to be graded and click on it. You will be able to see the assignment you created along with who has started the assignment and who has been graded.

voicethread new assignments

When a student has submitted their assignment, you will see that under their names in the ungraded category. To look at the students submission, click on the dropdown button right next to their name.

voicethread new assignments

From here you will be taken to the VoiceThread and will see the student comments on the left hand side. If you click on their name, you will see what the student commented. On the right side of the screen you will see an area where you can assign a grade and save it.

The new assignment features available in VoiceThread

In selecting appropriate assessments, faculty and instructors must consider not just the range of possible options (oral presentations, lab activities, essays, multiple choice exams, etc.) but how the assessments are aligned with the course and module level objectives, the nature of the content, and how that content is taught or disseminated. Some technological approaches to teaching have assessments tools integrated in them. For instance, the use of Kaltura quizzes to enhance student engagement with asynchronous lessons.

VoiceThread is another teaching tool that has assessments built into its design. VoiceThread replaces text-only discussions with interactive lectures and supports Universal Design for Instruction principles. This online platform allows instructors to put digital media such as images, video, and documents at the center of an asynchronous conversation. Instructors can choose among several available graded assignments “types.” Students can be assessed by a “Watch” assignment (requires students to watch all slides and all comments in a VoiceThread presentation), a “Comment” assignment (requires students to make a comment on a VoiceThread presentation), and a “Create” assignment (requires students to make a VoiceThread presentation using video, images, document, or PowerPoint slides).

screenshot of new VoiceThread feature Choose activity: Create

While the assignment feature has been available for a while, VoiceThread has recently implemented a major overhaul and redesign of the entire experience . They added a number of new features, implemented a tighter integration with Blackboard, and provided streamlined workflows for the user. The following are examples of improvements:

Updates to Assignment Setup for Instructors

  • Content organization – The assignment controls all VoiceThread content associated with it
  • Workflow – Streamlined creation process for building a VoiceThread within the assignment setup process
  • Settings – Instructors can dictate the playback settings for all VoiceThreads when students are completing a “Create a VoiceThread” assignment type

Updates to the Student Submission Process

  • Dynamic checklist of requirements for completing an assignment
  • Published due date, grading style, and submission status
  • Clearer messaging about whether an assignment is already submitted successfully

Updates to Grading for Instructors

  • Ability to view a full summary of the assignment, including description, type, requirements, and grading style
  • Three status categories of students (Unattempted, In progress, and Submitted)
  • Can grade students who are “in progress” even if they haven’t submitted yet
  • Graded students are moved to a separate tab in the interface to keep the “to-grade” list cleaner
  • After a student’s assignment has been graded, instructors can go back and “un-submit” their assignment so they can try again

For more information about the New Assignments features in VoiceThread, you are encouraged to watch this brief video . For a more comprehensive review, here is a recording from a recent New Assignment Features Workshop .

Voicethread and canvas assignments.

Updated on October 24, 2023

There are two primary ways to create linked VoiceThread assignments in Canvas. The first option uses Individual View, which takes students directly to a specific VoiceThread to view and comment. The second option uses the Assignment Builder, which lets you choose whether students will create their own VoiceThread, comment on one, or simply watch one.

Please note: If you want students to watch or comment on existing VoiceThreads, create and comment on that VoiceThread first, then make the Canvas assignment to which it will be attached to avoid a potential glitch.   See steps for creating and commenting on a VoiceThread .

Getting Started

To create a VoiceThread assignment, go to the Assignments tab on your Canvas page, and create a new assignment.

Once you have selected “external tool,” leave the hyperlink field empty and click on the “Find” button.

Scroll down to “VoiceThread,” and choose this option.

Individual View

If you want all of your students to interact with a particular VoiceThread, you can setup an “Individual View” assignment.

After selecting “individual view” you will need to either select an already existing VoiceThread (1) or create a new one (2).

If you have opted to create a new VoiceThread, the application will ask you to add media. You can either drag and drop files or click the + icon to create something new within the VoiceThread app.

Assignment Builder

Assignment Builder allows students to submit work directly to you without sharing it with the rest of the class. You can grade your students’ work directly in VoiceThread, and those grades will automatically populate in your Canvas Gradebook.

After selecting “Assignment Builder,” you will see the three types of available assignments for students to complete: Create a VoiceThread, Comment on a VoiceThread, Watch a VoiceThread.

  • In each case, you can establish the requirements for commenting in the settings.
  • “Watch a VoiceThread” assignments won’t be marked complete until students have played any media all the way through and made the required comments.
  • If you are setting up an assignment for students to Comment on or Watch a VoiceThread, it is best to create and comment on that VoiceThread first, then create the Canvas assignment to which it will be attached.   See steps for creating and commenting on a VoiceThread .

Select the option you prefer, and the prompts on the screen will guide you through the process of setting it up.

Grading “Assignment Builder” VoiceThreads

Once you save the assignment, it will either load right in Canvas underneath the assignment directions or open in a new tab, depending on how you configured the assignment settings. Once the assignment is published, VoiceThread will list your students on the right-hand side of the VoiceThread box. VoiceThread will separate students into two groups: “ungraded” (1) and “graded” (2). When you click on a student name under “ungraded,” their VoiceThread will appear to the left. Refresh the page to see incoming submissions and open the VoiceThread assignment in a new tab to view the submission in a larger window.

A new assignments option in VoiceThread

' src=

VoiceThread users can expect to see a new version of the assignments option this summer. The upgrade will take effect for all UVA faculty, staff, and students on Saturday, June 19 , between Summer Sessions I and II. It offers new features and improved functionality for faculty creating and managing assignments for their courses.

A few things to know:

  • The upgrade will be automatic, and users will not need to do anything to proceed. If you’d like to begin using the new version before the upgrade date, you can do so by following the steps for transitioning early .
  • None of your work will be lost, and previous assignments will retain their old features.
  • Any new assignments you create after the upgrade date will utilize the new version.

Some of the enhanced features that will be rolled out include a timed release option to set start and due dates for assignments and the ability to grade by percentage or pass/fail (point grading is coming soon!), among many others. View the full list of updates.

One feature that will no longer be supported in this new version is sharing a VoiceThread from an assignment outside of the assignment. You will have to make a copy and then share it.

Canvas: VoiceThread Graded Assignments

logo for Instructional Technology Group

by Suzanne Thompson Updated 8/8/21

VoiceThread is integrated with Canvas!

As of june 30, 2021, welcome to the “new assignments” voicethread interface. a few improvements:.

–The Canvas assignment will control all VoiceThread content associated with it. Once you use a VoiceThread for an assignment, it will no longer be visible on your VT Home Page. The assignment is the only place instructors and students can see it. –You can set start dates and due dates. Students will not be able to see your assignment outside of that time range. –After students submit, they will not be permitted to make any alterations to their submission unless you’ve allowed them to resubmit. –Selecting an existing VoiceThread will make a copy of it for use in that assignment.

You can build a VoiceThread assignment in Canvas, asking students to: CREATE a VoiceThread, COMMENT on a VoiceThread, OR  WATCH a VoiceThread.  As you grade the VoiceThread assignments, the grades go into the Canvas grade book. (Not familiar with VoiceThread? Check out these videos: What is a VoiceThread?     and  VoiceThread Basics Workshop 1 )

There’s a link to the full video tutorial lower down in this article, but the main tips to remember when creating a graded VoiceThread assignment in Canvas are…

When you are creating an Assignment (click more options if necessary, to see all the assignment settings), for the Submission Type , choose EXTERNAL TOOL  in the drop-down menu.

The area will then expand and you will see a Find button.

Canvas submission type dropdown for external tools.

Click the FIND button. Then click and drag the edges of the new pop up window to make it wider and taller until you see the 2 scrollbars on the right side. Use the 2 scrollbars to scroll down to find VoiceThread in the alphabetical list.

Canvas configure external tool screenshot highlighting VoiceThread

Click the  VoiceThread  link one time and you’ll see information appear in the URL field at the bottom of that window. (Also, if you’d like your assignment to open in a new tab, check that box.) Click the  Select  button.

Canvas external tools menu highlighting VoiceThread with an arrow pointing to the URL field.

You’ll then need to configure the settings of your VoiceThread.

The main takeaway here is to choose “ Assignment Builder ” (see screenshot below) if you want to create a graded VoiceThread assignment (asking students to  Create ,  Comment  on, or  Watch  a VoiceThread). The other options in the screenshot below work fine with VoiceThread, but do not tie in with the Canvas grade book. The video below explains what each option can do.

VoiceThread setup window, highlighted box around Assignment Builder

Here are videos with all of the steps and additional details: Using VoiceThread in Canvas

Voicethread new assignments, other tips and fyi:.

–Audio and video comments on WFU VoiceThreads are auto captioned, providing greater accessibility.

–When you create a VoiceThread assignment, it appears in the Canvas gradebook immediately with that name. If you rename a VoiceThread assignment, it also renames it in the gradebook immediately–however, it does  not  rename it in the VoiceThread assignment interface. Also, once you create a VoiceThread assignment and choose your settings, they are permanent for that link. You can’t edit those settings. So, if you need to edit your VoiceThread assignment name or settings and you catch the error right away before students submit, go ahead and delete the assignment and recreate it.

–When you go to grade a VoiceThread in your Canvas course, you don’t use Canvas SpeedGrader. Just click on the assignment link. You’ll see at the top “SUBMITTED” and below that “NOT SUBMITTED.” But in the sample screenshot below, “NOT SUBMITTED” is empty, when I know I have several other students in the class. Here’s why: It’s not until a student has clicked the VoiceThread assignment link that they are authenticated into the VoiceThread group in the course. and they will then be recognized by VT and appear in the “Not Submitted” area until they submit. Later, if you create additional VoiceThread assignments in that same course, those students who have already authenticated in that course (that VT group) will immediately show up as “Not Submitted” (until they submit) since they have already authenticated into that VoiceThread course.

Using VoiceThread Assignment Builder in Brightspace

VoiceThread’s updated assignment builder is now even better for tracking participation and grades for VoiceThread assignments. And it still integrates directly into Brightspace.

UPDATED: In Summer 2021, the connection between Brightspace and VoiceThread was updated and this caused some slight changes in how the two work together. This post has been updated with these new changes.

Add a VoiceThread Assignment to your content

To add a VoiceThread topic to your content area, click Existing Activities and scroll down to VoiceThread .

voicethread existing activities menu link

You’ll now see a popup window with these option buttons to work with your Voicethread.

Click the Course Builder button to choose from 3 assignment types: Create, Comment, and Watch.

voicethread assignment builder option

Create assignment

Students will create their own VoiceThreads about your specified topic. These can be automatically added to a student gallery that other students can see and add comments on. It can be graded as a percentage, pass/fail or a specific point value. You can also require to add a certain number of slides to their presentation.

This VoiceThread training video details how to set up a Create assignment.

*NOTE: VoiceThreads created for a create assignment will ONLY show up for this assignment. They will not appear in a student’s list of VoiceThreads if they go to their account.

Comment assignment

Comment assignments require students to add a certain number of comments to a VoiceThread that you have provided. It can be graded as a percentage, pass/fail, or a specific point value. You can also require to add a certain number of slides to end of the current presentation.

Watch assignment

This is the simplest assignment for students because it only requires them to view the entire VoiceThread and comments. This is automatically graded as pass/fail.

These are the same assignment types that were available before with upgraded options like a student gallery. Where we really see big differences is in the tracking and grading.

Rename your Voicethread topic

Now you have a VoiceThread in your content area which by default is titled “A voicethread link”. To change this title , click the divet button next to the title to bring up the context menu. Choose Edit Properties In-place .

voicethread topic title edit properties in place

Now you can just double click on the VoiceThread title and type in your new title.

voicethread topic type in new title

Grading & Tracking

After creating the VoiceThread assignment, you now see this grading view. You can quickly see 3 completion labels: submitted, in progress, and unattempte d. You can also see what has been graded and send out a reminder notice for incomplete work with 1 click.

voicethread grading view with completion labels

Each individual student in the list can be opened up for more options by clicking the divet arrow. Click on a comment date/time in the list to quickly jump to the comment in the VoiceThread. You can also add a percentage grade here. If the comments weren’t satisfactory, choose to unsubmit the assignment for them to do again.

voicethread grading individual student view

Since you can see that a student is “In Progress” it is easier award partial credit for assignments.

You can set start, due, and close dates for the VoiceThread . This work just like Brightspace dates . If a student has submitted work after the due date, it is clearly marked “Late” in the grading area.

*NOTE: Students will only show up in the ungraded list on your VoiceThread assignment if they have previously opened up a VoiceThread for your class. It does not automatically pull in your whole Brightspace classlist. If a student is not even listed as “Unattempted” that means they have not even opened up a VoiceThread yet or attempted the assignment.

What students see

The new assignment builder is also very friendly on the student side. The student view displays

  • VoiceThread assingment title
  • Information that you have provided about the assingment
  • Required actions, comments, etc.
  • Grading scheme (% or pass/fail)
  • Whether the assignment has already been submitted

Canvas: VoiceThread Graded Assignments

Updated 8/8/21

    VoiceThread is integrated with Canvas!

As of june 30, 2021, welcome to the “new assignments” voicethread interface. a few improvements:.

— The Canvas assignment will control all VoiceThread content associated with it.

Canvas Submission Type screenshot

Click the VoiceThread link one time and you’ll see information appear in the URL field at the bottom of that window. (Also, if you’d like your assignment to open in a new tab, check that box.) Click the Select button.

Canvas interface showing "load in new tab" checkbox

You’ll then need to configure the settings of your VoiceThread.

The main takeaway here is to choose “ Assignment Builder ” (see screenshot below) if you want to create a graded VoiceThread assignment (asking students to Create , Comment on, or Watch a VoiceThread). The other options in the screenshot below work fine with VoiceThread, but do not tie in with the Canvas grade book. The video below explains what each option can do.

VoiceThread interface with Assignment Builder emphasized

VoiceThread’s New Assignment Interface is Now Available

by Mendi Benigni | Apr 14, 2021 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Setting up a create-a-VoiceThread assignment

Require students to create a full VoiceThread. They will upload the slides and record comments, then submit that to you for a grade. You can even allow students to see their classmates’ submissions later so they can engage in peer review and conversation. Great for:

  • Student presentations
  • Demonstration of a skill (bedside manner, playing an instrument, painting/drawing technique, pitching a business)
  • Submitting a paper, wireframe, website, etc. to receive feedback

Note: If you haven’t built a VoiceThread link in your course yet, please visit the link building support page to get started.

Step1: Choose Activity

Click on the Create button, then click “Continue” at the bottom of the screen.

Screenshot of the Create button on the setup page with the continue button highlighted

Step 2: Choose options

Select the playback settings you want each student’s VoiceThread to have. Students will not be able to override these settings.

Screenshot of the choose options screen listing the checkboxes described below

Number of comments required Students will be required to post comments on the VoiceThread they create. You can require a minimum number or an exact number. They will not be permitted to submit until this requirement is met. Important: This is the number of comments students record on their own VoiceThread, not on a classmate’s submission.

Number of slides required Students will be required to add this number of slides to their VoiceThread. Minimum number of slides required is always 1 by default, but you can require more if desired.

Commenting types Select which types of comments you want to allow students to post.

Allow students to add slides to any VoiceThreads for this assignment Allow students to add slides to any VoiceThreads submitted by their classmates to this assignment.

Enable threaded commenting Turns on the ability for your participants to start  threaded conversations .

Enable comment moderation Allows you and the student to preview all comments on this VoiceThread before revealing them to others. You can also choose never to reveal them. Learn more about Comment Moderation.

Don’t allow commenters to delete their own comments Anyone who records a comment on a VoiceThread will be unable to delete it once it is saved. This is a powerful tool for assessment because your commenters will not be able to “retry” after they’ve recorded.

Limit length of each comment By default, all audio and video comments recorded in VoiceThread can be 60 minutes long. If you’d like to set shorter time limits for your commenters, enter your desired maximum comment length here.

When recording, automatically advance to the next slide after Set slides to advance automatically at pre-set intervals as users are recording. In addition, you can check the box for Pecha Kucha or Ignite beneath this option to automatically set the correct restrictions for those presentation types. Learn more about timed presentations here.

Start playing when opened The comments on your VoiceThread will begin playing automatically when people first open it.

When final comment on a slide has played, automatically advance to the next slide after __ seconds When the VoiceThread is in play mode, it will play through all of the comments on a slide and then move to the next slide automatically. The number of seconds is the “pause” time before the slide advances.

Allow download Allow students to download the central media from the VoiceThreads their classmates create.

Allow export Allow students to export one another’s VoiceThreads.

Allow students to make a copy Allow students to make a copy of one another’s VoiceThreads.

Student Gallery If you want students to view one another’s VoiceThreads after they are submitted, check this box. This will give them a “Student Gallery” button in their interface to see the VoiceThreads their classmates have submitted for this assignment.

Screenshot of the student gallery checkbox on the choose options page

Click “Continue” at the bottom of the screen when you’re done.

Step 3: Finalize

Set the final details for your assignment.

Assignment name This will appear at the top of the assignment in the student’s view.

Assignment instructions These instructions will appear on the right-hand side of the student’s view. Tell them more about what you expect from them here.

Example URL If you have created an example you want students to follow or more information about the assignment, enter the link to that page here. It will appear on the right side of the student’s view.

Message shown to student after they submit Customize the message students see after they’ve submitted their VoiceThread. A little personalization goes a long way!

Prerequisite Students will not be able to start this assignment unless they have already submitted a previous VoiceThread assignment in this course. Check this box and then browse for the assignment(s) you want to require them to complete before beginning this one.

Start date Students will not be able to view the assignment until the start date/time. If you want it to be open immediately, leave this blank.

Due date This is the date the assignment is due. Students can still submit after the due date, but they will be marked late.

Close date Students will not be able to access the assignment at all after this date. If you want the assignment to be open indefinitely, leave this blank.

Allow students to resubmit assignment Give students the opportunity to try again if they submit the wrong thing or need to make corrections after you give them feedback.

Allow students to view assignment after submitting If you don’t want students to be able to see the work they’ve submitted, un-check this box. If you want them to see their work so you can record feedback on it, leave it checked. They will not be able to make any changes to their work even if they can see it.

Assessment Choose how you would like to grade this assignment.

  • Complete/Incomplete

Click “Publish” at the bottom of the screen when you’re done. This will return you to your course page.

Teacher arrested for class assignment about ‘ways to kill’ one of his students

A Virginia teacher was arrested and had to give up his license after he gave his class an assignment asking them to come up with different “ways to kill” one of his students, it has emerged.

The unidentified Crestwood Middle School teacher instructed his students to write how they would kill one particular student in the class in January 2022, according to court documents obtained by WTKR Thursday.

The documents state that the assignment came from another student in the class, but the teacher went along with it.

Students then reportedly pulled out their tablets and dutifully listed ways to kill the selected classmate, with court documents describing how the students came up with ideas to chop him up, throw him out a window, burn him alive, and feed him to a dog.

Police became aware of the incident after the bullied child went home that night and told his parents, according to WTKR.

During an ensuing investigation, police reportedly asked what could have prompted the teacher to come up with the writing exercise — to which he said it was hard to engage the class, and the student at the center of the assignment didn’t appear to be upset by it at the time, records show.

The teacher went on to admit it was an inappropriate class assignment and said it was an error in judgment.

He later pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and voluntarily surrendered his teaching license, according to WTKR, which has been digging into the reasons teachers have lost their licenses throughout the state.

The Chesapeake School District said the teacher was employed at the school from Aug. 31, 2021, through April 8, 2022.

In a statement to the local news station, school district officials said they would not comment further “on such situations involving personnel.

“The safety of our students is our top priority and Chesapeake Public Schools expects all employees to act with the utmost professionalism to provide a positive learning environment for all students.”

The Post has also reached out to the Chesapeake School District for more information.
