Verb Tenses – Grade 5

Verb Tenses – Grade 5 discusses verbs that convey time, sequence, condition, and state. Students will learn how to identify which statements fall into these four categories. They will also learn about helping or linking verbs. They will be required to use these verbs when writing sentences in certain tenses. For example, to convey something that has happened requires the “has” linking verb.

The lesson defines each of the four categories. It may take time for students to understand the differences among the four groups. However, the lesson provides many examples of each category. You can spend more time working with the students and adding your own examples. By the end, students will both identify and correctly use verbs that convey these aspects.

Description

Additional information, what our verb tenses – grade 5 lesson plan includes.

Verb Tenses – Grade 5 explains verbs that communicate different aspects of language. It focuses on differences between verbs that convey time, sequence, state, and condition. The lesson provides detailed instruction on each of these areas. By the end, students will learn both how to identify these verbs and how to use them correctly. This lesson is for students in 5th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the green box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The supplies you need for this lesson are colored pencils and the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson.  One suggested adjustment to the activity worksheet is to place students in four groups and assign each group a different verb type to express in pictures or as part of a mime or charades. For an additional activity, you can have students use current reading or other text content and identify the four types of verbs. Finally, you can have your students write a paragraph using each type of verb, underlining the sentences and identifying the verb type.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

VERB TENSES – GRADE 5 LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Verb tenses.

The Verb Tenses – Grade 5 lesson plan includes three content pages. The lesson opens by stating that last night, you may have done something. Right now, you’re reading these words. Later, you will eat lunch or dinner. You have done things in the past, are doing something right now, and will do something in the future. We need different verb tenses to convey that actions happen at different times.

We also need different verb tenses to convey sequences of events, states of being, and conditions. Some people may find it a little bit confusing. You can express a similar event in many different ways using different verb tenses: I ate a candy bar yesterday. I had eaten a candy bar yesterday. I may have eaten a candy bar yesterday. And I eat a candy bar.

Verb tenses communicate differences in time, sequence, condition, and state. The lesson describes each of these and includes examples of each. Time conveys past, present, or future; sequence conveys the order of events; condition conveys that an action or state of being depends on a condition being met; and state conveys a subject’s state of being.

We often use one or more helping or linking verbs with action verbs. If you use the correct verb tense for conveying time, sequence, state, and condition, people will understand your writing and speaking much better.

Using Verb Tenses Correctly

It’s important to use verb tenses correctly. The lesson describes each tense in detail and includes examples of each tense conveying time, sequence, condition, and state.

When you want to describe something that happened in the past, you use the past tense of the verb. You sometimes need to include a helping verb.

You use the present tense of the verb for actions that occur regularly or at the present moment. Also, you sometimes need to include a helping verb in the present tense.

For actions in the future, you use the future tense, sometimes with a helping verb as well.

It’s important to understand the differences between the tenses and the differences between verbs that convey time, sequence, state, and condition. This will help you learn how to use them correctly.

VERB TENSES – GRADE 5 LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Verb Tenses – Grade 5 lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

DRAW A PICTURE ACTIVITY

The activity will certainly test students’ understanding of the material. Students will draw a picture to express each type of verb in one of four blank boxes. Afterward, they will write a sentences that matches the picture.

Students may work in pairs or groups to complete this activity.

VERB TENSES – GRADE 5 PRACTICE WORKSHEET

For the practice worksheet, students will first read a series of five sentences. They will have to mark whether the verbs indicate the present (PR), past (PA), or future (F). Then they will read a series of 15 sentences. This time, they will mark whether the verbs express time (T), sequence (Q), condition (C), or state (S).

CREATE THE SENTENCE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment further solidifies students’ knowledge. The first part requires students to match definitions to the correct type of verb expression. The second part requires them to write sentences that express the correct verb tense. The lesson provides twelve verbs. Each verb has a specific expression (time, sequence, condition, state) next to in parentheses. This signifies to students which tenses they will have to use.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.

Present Perfect Tense Worksheet for Class 5 with Answers

by Manjusha Nambiar · October 27, 2023

We make the present perfect tense form by putting has or have before the past participle form of the verb.

  • I have seen him before.
  • They have arrived.
  • He has stopped talking to me.

Use has when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun.

Use have when the subject is a plural noun or pronoun.

Use have when the subject is the pronoun I or you.

The past participle is the third form of the verb (v3). Most verbs have their past participle form ending in –ed. Such verbs are called regular verbs.

Some verbs are irregular . That means their past and past participle form do not end in –ed . You can learn more about irregular verbs here.
