For certain positions at Amazon (usually mid to senior level, L6 and above), as part of the interview process you’ll be required to submit a writing sample. This should be roughly two pages and given to you to complete on your own so that you can do it at home. You usually have 48 hours to complete the assessment. 

This writing sample is taken seriously as part of the interview process. Amazon famously doesn’t use powerpoints, and instead relies on written memos in their meetings. When you have a new marketing or product idea to pitch, instead of having a bunch of fancy slides to present, you’ll be expected to write a 6 page, structured memo explaining your idea. In the meeting, the first few minutes are spent in silence reading the document, followed by stakeholders diving deep and asking questions about your memo. 

As you can imagine, your ability to write clearly and concisely is an important skill to have!

How is the Amazon Writing sample assessed? 

Almost all of the prompts for the writing sample will be a Behavioral Question based on the Amazon Leadership Principles . You’ll usually get the option to answer one of two questions, for example, “Write about a time where you had limited data but had to make an important decision,” or “Tell me about a time you had to convince a stakeholder of your viewpoint.”

The writing sample will be assessed based on the relevance of your example, the structure, your adherence to the Leadership Principles and the logic. If you’ve done the preparation of your STAR stories for Amazon, then you should already have plenty of examples to choose from. The best way to write this is to choose a very solid example and use the STAR format to have a structured story. If you’re new to STAR, you can start here.

It’s very common for an interviewer to bring up your writing sample in the actual interview and ask probing questions about it — so make sure to review your writing sample before going into the interview! Be ready to dive deep.

The curve balls

After coaching hundreds of people on the Amazon writing sample, I’ve noticed that sometimes an interviewer will throw a curveball or two. This happens either one of two ways: 

  • During the interview they bring up the example you wrote in your writing assignment, but are not happy with the example you gave. So, they ask you for another example to answer the question! (A bit stressful if you’ve only prepared that one example)
  • Usually there are two question prompts in the writing sample. They will probe into the one you answered, but then ask for an example/answer to the other question that you haven’t answered!

The solution to mitigate these curveballs is to over prepare. In case 1, you should prepare and write out one extra example for the same question prompt (for yourself), which you can use as backup in case it’s asked for. For case 2, you should definitely answer both questions in the writing prompt, even though you are only submitting one. Putting this extra effort will make you more confident in the interview and moreover give you a larger pool of quality stories to choose from.  

  • Keep the length to two or three pages - no more than that.
  • Keep in mind the Leadership Principles as you write and frame your examples from the lens of these values.
  • Revise your writing sample to be as logical and concise as possible using the STAR format.
  • Always include the reasoning behind decisions you made in the story.
  • Include numbers/data where you can.
  • If possible, have someone else review your example to get a second opinion.

Can I use the same STAR story I used for my leadership principle stories? Or should I have a different one? 

It’s okay to reuse a story you’ve already prepared. What’s more important is how well the story is written!

Should I include headers and bold/italics? 

Yes, it’s definitely fine to add in headings and subheadings to structure the document if necessary.

What font should I use?

It doesn’t matter too much, but I’d suggest using Calibri 10. This is actually the font that Amazon uses internally, so you’ll automatically create some familiarity
and familiarity breeds trust!

How should I use numbers? 

It’s super important to add data. Be specific. Instead of saying you increased sales or marketing spend, give the number. If you have no numbers or data in your example, it’s likely a no-go.

Can I include graphs, images or tables?

This is a big no! And would usually result in a rejection. Amazon is focused on the written word, and the expectation is that you should be able to explain your points without the support of extra images.

Can I write 3 pages? 

No, definitely don’t go over the 2 page requirement. If you’re trying to squeeze in a bit more, make the font a bit smaller. :)

Can I use an example from 10 years ago? It’s old, but it’s really relevant to the question!

I don’t recommend it. As a rule of thumb, choose an example within the last 5 years. Amazon prefers examples that are fresh and relevant. 

What other tips do you have? 

The person reading your writing sample is busy and wants you to get to the point as soon as possible. Don’t make it hard for them! So, get your long version written down first and then edit. To edit, use this method: remove 1 paragraph from each page, one sentence from each paragraph, and one word from each sentence. Be strict and cut out any fat.

Length and Time Limit Requirements

No more than two or three pages is required in this interview phase to answer the two written interview questions. As you write, keep in mind the Leadership Principles, and Amazon’s company culture, and structure your examples in light of these principles. Use the STAR format to edit your Amazon writing sample to make it as logical and concise as possible.

You will have 48hrs to complete the writing assignment, depending on the criteria and instructions. If you finish early, take a few moments to review your work and make any necessary edits.

What Topics Will You be Asked to Write About?

The first question in the written exercise revolves around the type of innovation you have already contributed. You'll be asked to describe the most innovative or creative thing you've ever done eg a product idea you’ve championed.

Pick one innovation that was your idea and speak on that; it might be a new product idea, a process modification, a new metric, or a creative customer interface. Something new that made improvements to your work is enough; you don't necessarily need to have a patent or anything as complicated.

Remember not to divulge any confident and proprietary information about your current or previous employer. Give the reviewers all the information they need to understand your idea.

Answer questions about the issues you tried to resolve, the measures you employed, the outcome, if it was a crucial issue, and the impact of fixing this issue on a bigger scale.

A great majority of decisions we make involve careful deliberation, but some can't be thought about scientifically because there simply isn't enough time or data. In business cases, no matter how big or small the issue, they should answer the situation, any alternatives considered, and why the final decision was made.

Be sure to explain how the alternate route you considered differs from others.

Most decisions involve analysis, but some are Proper judgment calls that can't be subjected to analysis because of time or information limitations. For example - "please describe a recent judgment call you made that couldn't be analyzed."

It should center on a business issue, regardless of how big or little it is. What were the circumstances, the alternatives you thought about and weighed, and the steps in your decision-making process? Include a justification for your decision concerning other options that were taken into consideration.

How Is the Exercise Evaluated?

Your submission will be evaluated and rated generally by Amazon reviewers based on the following two standards:

  • Expression and Clarity of idea.
  • Thought organization and structure.

Explain your answer clearly while maintaining the logical flow of the written piece to increase your chances of passing Amazon's written test.

The written exercise will also be evaluated on the following criteria:

Content: Does the response address the customer's concerns? Does it attempt to resolve the issue? Is the language professional and courteous?

Structure: Is the writing easy to read and understand? Is it well organized?

Formatting: Are the document's font, point size, and spacing consistent? Are any charts, graphs, or images easy to understand?

Creativity: Did the candidate devise a creative solution to the problem?

Impact: Would resolving this issue positively impact the customer's experience?

Candidates who can effectively address all these criteria will be well on impressing the reviewers and landing the job.

Now that you know how to format your written exercise, it's time to avoid common mistakes that can ruin your chances of impressing the reviewers.

1. Not Answering the Question: When you are given a writing prompt, make sure that you answer it directly. The reviewers are looking to see if you can understand and follow simple instructions, so don't try to be creative or clever with your response and deviate from the relevant context of the question.

2. Being Too Creative: While you want to show that you are a creative thinker, you don't want to go overboard with your written exercise. Stick to the facts and avoid any fanciful language or outlandish claims.

3. Failing to Proofread: One of the quickest ways to lose points is to submit a writing sample full of spelling and grammar mistakes. Be sure to proofread your work before you submit it, or have someone else take a look for you.

4. Using Slang or Colloquialisms: Your written exercise is not the place to bust out your best slang or colloquialisms. Stick to Standard English and avoid any language that could be interpreted as unprofessional.

5. Being Too Negative: If you are asked to write about a time when you faced a challenge, it's important to focus on the story's positive aspects. The reviewers want to see that you can stay calm and collected under pressure, so avoid any negativity in your writing.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We visited my family back in Illinois over the weekend, and my daughter had a lovely time playing with her cousins. On another topic, I’ve enjoyed helping senior employees practice for their interviews at Amazon. It's one thing to sit on the other end of the table evaluating potential employees, and it's another to be able to talk to them ahead of time. It's exciting to be able to identify the antipatterns early, and help people avoid making those mistakes. One mistake I've seen is when people don't take the writing exercise seriously. I've seen senior leaders spend hours crafting their stories for their on-site interview, but try to do their writing assignment in 30 minutes. It just doesn't work.

I thought it would be worthwhile to add to my collection of articles about how to interview by explaining the Amazon Writing Exercise.

Amazon asks all senior candidates to submit a writing sample as a part of the interview process. Amazon has a document culture, and it's important that leaders in the company have the ability to put their thoughts into writing.

But it's not about being able to have perfect grammar. We regularly hire senior leaders from other countries. They bring across their experience, but not necessarily excellent English. Instead, we look for leaders who can communicate information and ideas in a clear way.

The writing sample questions are unique. This is your one opportunity to spend more than 30 seconds thinking about your answer to an interview question. What project were you involved in?

Who else was involved?

What did you need to accomplish?

How long did it take to do that action?

Did you need to do anything else?

What did other people do?

What was the final result in comparison to what you needed to accomplish?

How did everyone feel about the result?

Were there any follow-up actions to be taken later, or are in progress now?

I understand people forgetting to provide some critical information in an in-person interview. Your brain doesn't function correctly while under pressure. There's not much excuse for a senior leader writing without a time constraint to forget an important aspect of their explanation.

Want to become a financial analyst at Amazon? First, you must pass the Excel assessment. This assessment will be sent to you after the initial resume screening or during the interview phase. You will need to show your skills and prove your competency in different features of excel. These include:

The final round consists of a series of on-site interviews also known as loop interviews. Each of the 5-6 interviews lasts about an hour. You will begin with five minutes of introductions, followed by 50 minutes of the interview, and then 5 minutes for any questions you might have for your interviewer. About assessments

At Amazon, one of our highest priorities is hiring and developing the best, and we work hard to raise the performance bar with every hire. Amazon uses online assessments as one way to help us get to know you better, and we design them to measure key characteristics required for success in a role. Assessments also allow us to assess applicants consistently and equitably, as every individual is provided with the same experience and information needed to complete the assessment. Depending on the position, we may ask you to take an assessment during the application process or send it to you separately after you’ve applied. The type and number of assessments will depend on the role you apply for and in some cases, must be completed within a certain timeframe. The two common types of assessments are work style assessments and work sample simulations.

WORK STYLE ASSESSMENT

These assessments are centered around Amazon’s peculiar culture and Leadership Principles, and typically take 10-20 minutes to complete. In these assessments, we ask you to choose the extent to which a statement represents your work style. For instance, we may ask you which of the two statements "I like for things to be clearly structured,” or “I look forward to the opportunity to learn new things," best describes you.

WORK SAMPLE SIMULATION

These assessments ask you to complete virtual tasks related to a specific position and typically take 20 minutes - one hour to complete. They may ask you to make decisions based on our Leadership Principles, complete activities critical to success at Amazon, and demonstrate your problem-solving, prioritization, and interpersonal abilities. Depending on the role you are applying for, the assessment may ask you to interpret data from a chart, answer a customer question, choose how to resolve an issue, multitask, or find the right information from multiple sources.

  • For any Software Development Engineer I & II applicants we recommend reviewing our Software Development Topics to help you prepare for technical evaluations and interviews. For all other roles, no advance preparation is required to complete the assessment(s). Just be yourself and do your best.
  • Some questions may ask about your work style. Try not to overthink them or spend too much time on any one question. We want to get to know the authentic you, as there are many types of successful people at Amazon.
  • Before starting your assessment, read any information provided carefully since things like timing, deadlines, and assessment types can vary depending on the team.

The formalities

  • Most assessments are conducted virtually unless administered as part of a hiring event or on-site interview day.
  • During your assessment, be in a quiet and comfortable place with no distractions.
  • Review provided instructions carefully, as some assessments must be completed by a particular date. If an assessment deadline is missed, we’re unable to grant extensions. Many assessments are also timed, so be sure to set aside an appropriate amount of time.
  • All assessments require the internet, have a computer with a reliable connection and access to email. You will be notified of any additional technical requirements in advance.

Writing Assignment Advice

Roles at Amazon Level 5 and above are expected to submit a written assignment.  It is a test to determine your writing skill.  You are expected to submit your written essay 1-2 working days before the loop interview, otherwise an agreed date is set.  My advice is to prepare your written assignment long in advance, giving you sufficient time for a thorough review with us.  Writing is critical to your success at Amazon, and you don’t want to lose an opportunity because you ran out of time.  You may or may not be directly asked about your written exercise question during your on-site interview. Members of the interview team will review your submission during final review. All offers extended are contingent upon receiving a written assignment.

The length of the assignment will be told to you by the recruiter, however it typically up to two A4 or Letter size pages long.  The preferred font is Calibri or Arial of a size ranging from 10.5 to 12.  Your sentences should be always single spaced.  There should be no use of colour in your written assignments and data must be presented.  You can use tables only if it saves you space compared to the use of words and must be relevant however, graphs, charts and pictures are frowned upon.  You must use MS Word in rich text format, but you are free to submit in PDF.

Finally, do not use bullet points unless it is followed up with in-depth sentences of support and do not use proprietary information.  Things to keep in mind when writing are:

When choosing your example, try to pick something as recent as possible. 

Be specific. Include all relevant dates, names, titles, and elements involved in your example. Answers with more information are perceived as more truthful and paint a better picture of what you accomplished.

Clearly answer each part of the question.  One of the worst mistakes that you can make is to ignore parts of the prompt.

Context is important. These questions will always, in some form, ask you about a time in your career when you faced a problem and how you handled it. Although showing off your accomplishments is important, so is describing the problems that you have faced. Your explanation of the problem should be given just as much attention as your explanation of the solution.

Do not be afraid to discuss adversity. In real life, unanimous agreement about solving hard problems is uncommon. An example that includes disagreement, controversy and how you were able to overcome it is more believable and applicable to a real company than an example where everything goes smoothly, and everyone agrees.

QUESTION TOPICS TYPICALLY GIVEN

Two questions are presented for you to answer, where you choose just one:

Question 1:

Most decisions are made with analysis, but some are judgment calls, due to time constraints or incomplete information.  Write about a judgment call you have made recently – i.e. in the last 12 months – that could not be analysed beforehand.  The focus should be on a business issue.  You may write about a big issue or a small one.  Describe the situation, the alternatives you evaluated, and your decision-making process.  Explain why you made that judgment call over the alternatives.

Question 2:

What is the most inventive or innovative thing that you have done?  Describe something that was your idea, e.g. a process change, a product idea, a new metric, or a novel customer interface.  It does not need to be patented.  Do not write about anything your current or previous employer would deem confidential information.  Provide relevant context for us to understand the invention/innovation.  What problem were you seeking to solve, and what was the result?  Why was it an important problem to solve?  How did it make a difference to the business or organisation?

Note:  There may be variations of these questions, but in essence they are the same.

Amazon will evaluate your writing response on two criteria:

Clarity of thought and expression. Be sure to explain your point well.

Organization and structure. Make sure that your writing flows logically and makes sense.

They also make up the characteristics of the ideal Amazon employee. As such, you’ll be assessed against them throughout the Amazon recruitment process.

While some of these principles are self explanatory, others are a little more complex in their nature. For example, bias for action, in Amazon terms, means it’s better to take calculated risks than be overly cautious with your decision making.

You’ll need to show these principles in action throughout your application, be it through past behaviour or as part of your Amazon assessment tests, so be sure you fully grasp the meaning of each before you start the recruitment process.

To apply for an open position, you’ll need to set up an amazon.jobs account, create a profile with some basic information, upload your CV and, depending on the role, answer some relevant screening questions.

If you’re applying for a creative role and have existing work examples or an online portfolio, Amazon recommends you include links to these within your CV.

If your application is successful you may be required to take one or more Amazon online assessment.

Amazon Aptitude Tests

Amazon numerical reasoning tests.

As part of the screening process, it’s likely you’ll be asked to complete a series of online assessments. These may be sent to you as part of your initial application, or at a later date.

The numerical reasoning test is designed to measure your confidence and ability concerning statistical information, and since Amazon is a data-driven company, these tests are a standard requirement for most roles.

You’ll be presented with a series of tables, charts and graphs, and will need to evaluate the data present to draw logical conclusions. All questions will have multiple-choice answers and will require only basic calculations, like working with percentages or conversions .

Amazon verbal reasoning test

You may also be invited to sit a verbal reasoning test as part of your Amazon application. These measure your critical thinking skills , and your ability to interpret written information.

You’ll need to determine if a set of statements can be classified as true or false, based on a passage of supporting evidence. In some cases, there may be insufficient information within the text, in which case your answer would be ‘cannot say’.

Amazon Work Style Assessment

The Amazon Work Style Assessment is a type of personality test, which evaluates your professional preferences to determine how they fit with Amazon’s corporate culture. Typically it takes between 10 and 20 minutes to complete, and presents a sets of statements that represent different working styles.

For example, “I enjoy working as an individual in a solitary environment” or “I prefer to work collaboratively in a team setting”. For each set, you’ll need to state your preferred working style.

It’s important to refer back to the Leadership Principles throughout this assessment. Remember, these outline the type of employee Amazon looks for and will be the benchmark against which your working preferences are measured.

Amazon Work Sample Simulation

For the Amazon Work Sample Simulation, you’ll be given a virtual task to complete that is relevant to your future role. This could be anything from handling a customer query to evaluating financial information, or developing a solution to a hypothetical problem.

These tests measure skills required in the given job function, such as interpersonal skills, multi-tasking, prioritisation and effective problem solving. Whatever your personal task involves, keep the Leadership Principles in mind and use them to guide your actions.

Depending on the nature of the task, your Work Sample Simulation will take up to an hour to complete.

Amazon software development engineer online assessment

This assessment is a combination of coding and behavioural tests and is used for software development engineer positions.

For internship and graduate positions, the assessment consists of code debugging, coding test, the Work Style assessment, and technical problem-solving assessment.

If you are applying for a more senior software development engineer position, the assessment will include two coding questions, a coding approach questionnaire, and the Work Style assessment.

Amazon maintenance technician test

The Amazon maintenance technician test is an adaptation of the Ramsay Mechanical Test and is administered to applicants for maintenance jobs. This is used to assess an applicant’s aptitude for mechanical maintenance and is similar to a mechanical reasoning test .

Area Manager Job Tryout

An Amazon Area Manager online assessment takes around 45 minutes to complete, and is divided into 5 sections:

Work scenario: Like a situational judgement test , you will be presented with hypothetical workplace scenarios and will be required to identify the best way to respond.

Manage your day: Used to assess your time management and organisation skills, you will need to arrange tasks according to their urgency and priority.

Run your area: You will receive a report similar to those you can expect on the job. You will need to analyse the data, answer questions, and make decisions based on the report.

Tell us your story: Here you will need to give some background information on your experience and education.

Describe your approach: A type of personality test where you will need to state how much you identify with the statements.

Financial analyst excel test

An Amazon Excel assessment test is required for candidates applying for a financial analyst post. This is used to measure an applicant’s proficiency using Microsoft Excel.

Topics that typically appear on the test include:

  • Macro creation
  • Advanced properties
  • Advanced formula creation.

Amazon MBA assessment

The Amazon MBA assessment is administered to MBA and master's level applicants for full-time and internship positions.

The assessment is split up into three parts:

  • Work sample simulation: you will be given a virtual task that will be relevant to your future role
  • Work style assessment: evaluates your professional preferences to determine your fit with Amazon's culture
  • Career experience survey: a questionnaire where you will provide your preferences for current MBA roles

Amazon Versant Test

The Amazon Versant test evaluates your ability to grasp and communicate in the English language. The test assesses several facets of language ability and is split up into five sections:

Typing: You will be given a passage of text and will need to type as many words as possible in 60 seconds. This section assesses both your speed and accuracy when typing.

Complete the sentence: You will have 25 seconds to read a sentence and identify the word that makes the sentence make sense and grammatically correct.

Dictation: A series of sentences will be played, and you will have 25 seconds to type out what you have just heard. Again, speed and accuracy are important here.

Reconstruct the paragraph: You will be given 30 seconds to read a paragraph. After that, the paragraph will be deleted, and you will have 90 seconds to type it back in.

Email writing: Within just 100 words, you will need to construct an email that covers all key points outlined to you.

Telephone interview

Telephone interviews at Amazon consist of behavioural questions, with their basis rooted in its Leadership Principles. You’ll be asked about challenges you’ve faced in the past, and the approach you took to overcome them.

Questions in the phone interview typically focus on areas like team motivation, collaboration, problem-solving and risk. A key thing the hiring team looks for at this stage is data-based evidence, so be sure to include supporting information in your answers.

Face-to-face interview

If you’re successful in your Amazon online tests, the next step in the application process is an in-person Amazon interview, which will last between 45 minutes to an hour.

Depending on the position, you can expect to meet anywhere between two and seven interview personnel, including representatives of your prospective team, managers, and what Amazon refers to as ‘Bar Raisers’. These are individuals from an unrelated department there to give an objective opinion on your suitability.

As with your telephone interview, in this interview stage questions will be behavioural, so prepare several possible examples in advance.

Assessment centre

Every Amazon business team operates its specific recruitment process, and some may require you to attend an in-person assessment day .

The activities you’ll undertake here vary greatly depending on the job function, but role play exercises and group activities are common. You may also be required to take a written assessment or a job-specific test, such as a coding exercise. You’ll be informed in advance of the nature of your assessment day.

Amazon endeavours to respond to applicants as quickly as possible, and states a turnaround of five working days post-interview, so whatever the final stage of your application, you can expect to know the results within a week.

Amazon hiring process

But before entering the answering part and its methods, let us see what to expect in the writing exercise section. The structure of the writing exercise includes two questions where you are free to attend either one of them. The candidates will have at least 48 hours before the onsite interview to complete the answer. 

The answer should not be more than four pages, and the ideal number of pages you can write is 2. But, again, it is to ensure precise answering with valid points only. 

Writing exercise: Question 1

The first option asks you about your greatest innovation or an idea good to make people’s lives better. The answer can include points like what was the most innovative thing you have done, describe any product idea, marketing method, or customer interaction technique that brought about a change in your working atmosphere, why was the said innovation required, how did you manage to solve the problem with your idea and so on.

While writing the answer, make sure that you do not disclose any information your previous employer requested to be confidential. Any possible idea or change you put forward that brought a positive change or resolved a problem in your work can be included in the answer. 

There are some things that you should include in your answer:

  • Is your innovation scalable? How can you develop your idea to resolve a larger problem without spending additional resources on it? 
  • What is expected from this innovation?
  • How does your innovation impact society?
  • What is the level of influence the idea can bring out? 

Writing exercise: Question 2

The second option is based on your judgment rather than innovation. Without proper judgment calls, analytical decisions cannot withstand in the long run. In this question, you have to elaborate on any judgment calls you have made, which positively impacted the issue at hand. 

In the answer, it will be beneficial to explain the entire situation in which you had to take this action and the impact of the decision you made. Explain the various conditions you considered while arriving at this decision and the reason for eliminating all the other alternatives you had.  

Keep in mind while answering

There are some things to note while presenting the answers to both questions. 

  • Use MS Word rich text format. 
  • The title of the question should be the question that you have chosen. 
  • Use Arial or Times New Roman with font preferably 12 but no less than 10. 
  • Do not use bullets or outline format. 
  • Do not include any confidential information in the answers. 
  • Include specific examples and valid points to support your answer. 
  • Use the STAR approach while answering. 
  • Ensure proper flow of writing. 

How are the answers evaluated?

There are two criteria by which the reviewer assesses your work. They are:

  • Clarity of expression.
  • Structure and organization of ideas. 

You need to keep these points in mind and maintain a proper flow in your answers. Arranging the related points in a disorderly fashion will not get you anywhere, be prepared to organize the answers with the PAR structure. You can also try using a second-party perspective to edit your answer to get the necessary flow. 

Sample Answer Structure 

You can use the following sample structure to write your answer. The answering process is almost like behavioral questions but with introduction and conclusion paragraphs. 

Introduction 

In this paragraph, answer your question briefly and outline what you are going to write. State the innovation or judgment that you made in the introduction and explain it later. 

Describe the problem 

This is the problem section of the PAR writing structure. Explain the problem that you are solving with your idea. Describing the situation’s entire context and specifying the need for innovation or judgment calls is part of this section. Make sure to wrap it up in half a page. 

Describe the action 

This is the action section in the PAR structure and should be the longest section of all. In this section, you should explain the methods that you took to resolve the previously explained problem. You should begin every sentence of the paragraph with a general idea of the point that you will explain in that paragraph. If there are multiple points, use the first sentence as a title for them all. 

Describe the results 

The last and final section of the PAR structure should include the aftereffects of your idea. Explain the outcome of your innovation or judgment call in this section. 

Conclusion 

While writing the conclusion paragraph, restate the topic and summarise the major points that you have covered. 

Common mistakes while writing 

There are some common errors that people keep repeating in their answers. Let us go through some of them and identify their solutions. 

Mistake 1: No introductory paragraph 

Even though the PAR structure is intriguing to follow, adding an introductory paragraph is essential to bring in the reader towards your situation. It is the general summary of what you are going to present, and it provides a clear direction in which the reader is supposed to address your answer. 

If you avoid the introduction, the reader will have to put extra effort into identifying what you are trying to say through the answer. So you need to include the answers to the question of the major point in your story. 

Here is a simple example of an introductory paragraph you can refer to. 

“Recently, I had to innovate a new way of approaching customers in my company to increase sales. Of course, I had my team with me throughout all the major decisions, but in the end, it was an experiment and a risk we had to take. But at last, it became one of the most productive sales innovations in the company’s history”. 

In this example, the problem, its solution, and the innovation outcome are all mentioned in a nutshell. It also raises curiosity in the reader to explore the full story. The transition from this to PAR structure is easy for a writer. 

Mistake 2: Absence of context

Providing a vague description of the event instead of giving the right context is a mistake that appears most and should be avoided. In the following example, we can see how this is a problem in an answer. 

“A few months ago, I happened to come across a project idea of a team of which I was not a part. The team was confident about the product, but I found some issues that would cause major problems in the market. Especially related to customer satisfaction and sales outlets. 

But I was confused about whether to report my concerns to the team lead or just stay away from it as it was not my project. At this point, I kept the company’s interests above everything else and expressed my concerns to the project lead. Surprisingly, the project lead took it well and amended changes in the project favorable to the customers.”

In this answer, there are many questions left unanswered. How did you come across another team’s project? What was the project, and why was it unsuitable for the market? How did you understand the problem, and what was your suggestion to solve it? How was the team lead able to create necessary changes?

From this example, it is clear that providing the proper context and details is necessary while answering the questions. There should be no questions remaining in the mind of the reader when he goes through your answer. A clear context makes a perfect answer that can connect with the reader throughout the essay. 

Mistake 3: Overuse of context

Same as not giving enough context, providing excessive background information can also be a problem in your essay. The effect of your story reduces whether you don’t provide enough context or overuse it. While describing the situation in your essay, think like a person reading it for the first time and giving the necessary information for such a person to understand what you have written. 

This is where editing comes essentially in any work. Even if you detail a lot of information, make sure to edit it out to proper context yourself or with the help of another reader. 

Mistake 4: Failure to describe the action 

As we have discussed earlier, the action part is the most important portion of the answers. This is the part where you describe the innovation or judgment that you are mentioning in the answer. Hence, it has to be perfect with the necessary information. 

We need to make sure in this section that you have to try and give credit to yourself for your actions. It may be true that you had a team to assist you, but it is hardly a place to compliment your team. Let us take a look at this example answer. 

“I coordinated the marketing team and the developers to come up with a new tactic that defines the product with such quality in the market. It was important for the publicity heads to understand the product’s specifications and they were explained about it. I also contacted the customer support team to make them aware of the changes made in the programming and product functioning and asked them to keep feedback on the new release.”

Even though you should note that the answer can be more detail-oriented than this, the answer is perfect for showing what you offered in the process. For example, in this answer, the writer could mention how she contacted the customer support team, coordinated the marketing and developers team, and about the product idea. 

To know what kind of details you need to mention, keep in mind the position you are applying for. Then, write about the details that are relevant to the job you need. 

Mistake 5: Failure to describe the impact 

The last part of the PAR structure requires you to write the result of your initiative. It is an important part, and you should not omit this in any circumstances. Your answer will be complete only when the reader can know the outcome of your work. 

Answer these questions in the result portion. How did your action affect the business? Were you able to resolve the problem at hand? If not, what are the lessons you learned from your action? What process did you use to improve your situation?

Here is an example where you have to explain failure as a result. 

“I implemented the new pattern in our code, and as we were unable to get it checked in our usual format. The problem was fixed at sight, but my supervisor asked me to check it anyway, irrespective of the closing deadline. But the code didn’t pass the final tests, and hence we had to reverse the program. As a result, we met a slight delay in delivering the final code, but the produced code was perfect, and the client was more than happy about it. 

From this incident, I learned that not everything would be a success, and you have to learn from the failures. In addition, it taught me that trust in the quality of the final product is sometimes more important than the time in which it is delivered. So, we need to start fast and look for every possible way in which things can go wrong, then prepare for every case scenario”. 

In this answer, the writer portrayed her failure and stated why such an incident occurred. When you write about something that has not gone as planned, ensure what you have learned from the action. It shows a positive attitude in work and life alike. 

Amazon writing exercise: Tips to score well 

Here are some basic tips that you can try out while answering the questions. These may help you score better in the exercise. 

  • Try to pick the most recent example rather than one that happened a long time ago. The more your answer adapts to the current environment and technology, the better. 
  • Be as specific as possible . Include the relevant information like the place, date, names, etc.. as the more authentic background you can provide, the more believable your answer will be. 
  • Answer every part of the question. As you have seen, you will be asked several multifaceted questions under each option. Make sure to answer all of them correctly. 
  • Importance of context. As we know, the description of what happened is really important for the idea to be conveyed rather than pinpointing just the situation.

Lindsay Mustain — a former Comcast and Amazon recruiter and now CEO of Talent Paradigm — compared these statements to what she’d imagine hearing at a Miss America pageant in a recent interview with CNBC Make It .

It’s a simple response describing what you do in your role without highlighting your accomplishments, she said — using: "I had stakeholder meetings with people," as an example.

Mustain says those types of answers make a rĂ©sumĂ© look "like a glorified job description," adding that it’s not just junior employees but C-suite execs who are also guilty of this. 

Instead, she suggests quantifying your accomplishments, so you have numbers to back up how you helped a company move forward. 

The "more metrics and analytics you can add to your résumé, the more impressive," she said.

Recruiters often deal with tens of thousands of applicants, so a results-based résumé is more effective as the reviewers quickly get a sense of how much value you added to a role, she said.

Eugene Hayden, who has worked at companies like Google, KPMG, and the Boston Consulting Group, previously reviewed over 800 rĂ©sumĂ©s to help people in his network who were negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The most common mistake he found in the résumés he reviewed was a lack of quantifiable achievements, with 86% of résumés having this issue, he said.

"Hiring managers and recruiters are looking for people who perfectly fit the role and are able to achieve goals and evaluate their personal impact.

Step 5: Choose a Book Release Option for Your eBook

Step 6: Uploading Your eBook

Select “upload ebook manuscript”.

Once you are happy with the features you have selected, it is time to upload your eBook manuscript. There are several recommended formats for your book, including .doc, .docx, HTML, Plain Text, and MOBI to name a few. 

Using the current Kindle format is recommended so your book will be readable and professional on every e-reader . Once you upload the file, you can see how it looks like an actual book. 

Under the title “Kindle eBook Cover,” select the book cover option that applies to you.

Step 8: Select Publisher              

1.     under the “kindle ebook isbn” section, enter the international standard book number, if applicable, and the publisher..

If you intend only to publish this eBook on Amazon, then you do not need either piece of information and can leave the prompt boxes blank. 

2.     Under the “KDP Select Enrollment section,” select the KDP option that applies to your eBook.

Also, in this section, you can add your eBook to KDP Select, which allows your eBook to be a part of Kindle Unlimited, and you will receive a broader range of marketing options. To avail of this, your eBook has to be exclusive to Amazon. 

If you are unsure about this option, you can always add it later. 

Step 9: Choose the Territories and Pricing for Your eBook

1.     under the “territories” section, select the territorial option that applies to your ebook..

It is standard practice to select the default setting “All territories (worldwide rights)” unless there is a specific reason not to. This will make your eBook available to every customer base that has access to Amazon.

2.     Select the Royalty Plan Applicable to your eBook.

You can choose between 35% and 70% royalty for your book. Selecting 70% will result in more profit for you, but it will add pricing limitations to your book, and you will have to enroll in Book Lending. 

3.     Select your eBook’s primary marketplace and add the listing price in the prompt box.

Select Amazon.com as your eBook’s primary marketplace, and then add your listing price to the prompt box. If your book is selected to be available worldwide, the listing pricing may change subject to exchange rates in different countries. 

Step 10: Add Your eBook to Matchbook and Book Lending

If you want to enroll your book into the Book Lending and Matchbook feature, you can select to add yourself or opt out, depending on your preferences. 

Step 11: Save Your Draft eBook 

  click “save as draft” until you are ready to publish..

Once you have added all the relevant information about your eBook into the specified areas, you are given two options: “Save as draft” until you are ready to publish it or “Publish your Kindle eBook” if your eBook is completed. 

Once your book goes live, it is best practice to set up your Amazon Author page with a recent photo and biography, giving potential customers insight into the book’s background. Also, any blubs from the book should be added to your eBook’s details page. 

Step 12: Self-Publishing Your eBook

If you are interested in publishing your eBook as a printed book or if your eBook has become so successful that there is a space in the market for a printed, physical version, self-printing can be completed through Amazon.com. Self-publishing your eBooks was historically completed by CreateSpace through Amazon but now can be produced through the Kindle section within Amazon.com. 

Your eBook will need a spine and back cover and must be re-formatted as physical books look different from eBooks. But it is another service that Amazon offers its budding writers. 

To publish a book on amazon is a skill, and it is a challenging feat. It is very tempting to rush your manuscript to the market when you have spent so much time, creative juices, and effort producing something that people will like with no monetary supplement. However, releasing something that is not entirely finished is unprofessional and will ruin your chances of success.

Amazon and Kindle have ensured that writers can easily present their hard work to an enormous market of potential customers. It gives writers the option to bring their body of work to the market under their terms and when they feel like it is ready to be presented, which ensures that there are more quality eBooks on the market.

Those $399 Gold Trump Sneakers Are About a Lot More Than Shoes

What is Trump really selling when he is selling footwear?

Of all the merch hawked by the former president and current presidential candidate Donald J. Trump and related entities over the past few months — the gold (chocolate) bars, the wines , the superhero NFTs — is any of it more Trumpian than the $399 Never Surrender sneakers unveiled over the weekend at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia ? They are like a road map to Mr. Trump’s value system and electoral strategy in sartorial form.

Gilded hightops as shiny as the chandeliers at Mar-a-Lago, they have an American flag wrapping the ankle like the forest of flags that spring up behind Mr. Trump whenever he takes a stage. They have red soles made to match his trademark red ties (and the flag) and perhaps as a sly nod to Christian Louboutins and the semiology of luxury footwear. Also, there’s a large embossed “T” on the side and on the tongue.

While they are “bold, gold and tough, just like President Trump,” according to the Trump sneakers website, allowing potential owners to “be a part of history,” they boast zero technical performance attributes. While they have a shape similar to Nike Air Force 1s (get it? Air Force One!), they are unabashed imitations of the original.

It’s tempting to dismiss the offering as all flash and marketing with little substance. That’s what Michael Tyler , a spokesman for the Biden campaign, did, saying, “Donald Trump showing up to hawk bootleg Off-Whites is the closest he’ll get to any Air Force Ones ever again for the rest of his life.”

Or to think of them as Mr. Trump’s answer to the Biden campaign’s TikTok presence : an effort to associate himself with the cool embedded in the whole idea of sneaker culture, not to mention the energy and athleticism implied by the “Just Do It” model. Despite the fact that Mr. Trump himself is almost never seen wearing a sneaker, or doing much exercise.

Yet the merching of the moment is more dangerous than it may initially appear.

There has been a lot of eye-rolling since the sneakers’ debut, and jokes about the fact that, given the millions of dollars in penalties levied on Mr. Trump in his various civil cases, he has to make more money somewhere. And there was a lot of focus on the boos that met his appearance at Sneaker Con. (To be fair, the sneakerhead community is not the market for the kicks since there’s nothing original about them; it’s the MAGA market.)

It’s easy to get distracted by the sheer absurdity of it all — a former president, selling sneakers!

There are so many ways Mr. Trump has challenged the norms of the presidential system that such merch can seem the least of the matter. What is selling NFTs with pieces of a mug shot suit compared with the indictment that necessitated the mug shot? What is offering $99 Victory47 cologne in a gold bottle with a gold Trump head as a stopper (another product available on the sneaker website) compared with offering to throw NATO allies to Russia like little pieces of red meat? Besides, realistically, there’s no way the sneakers will provide much of a financial boost to Trump World.

The sneakers are being created by a company known as 45Footwear LLC and are not officially “designed, manufactured, distributed or sold by Donald J. Trump, the Trump Organization or any of their respective affiliates or principals,” according to a disclaimer on the sneaker website. That company licenses the Trump name and image from one called CIC Ventures LLC , which happens to have the same address as the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Trump sneaker website looks a lot like the Trump NFT website, and as with that arrangement, Mr. Trump most likely receives a licensing fee. He did present the sneakers at Sneaker Con himself.

Despite the fact that, as of Sunday, the website claimed that the 1,000 pairs of numbered Never Surrender sneakers had sold out, leaving the somewhat less exciting T-Red cherry knit sneaks and Potus 45 white knit sneaks available at $199 each, it’s hard to imagine a circumstance in which the shoes provide any meaningful source of income.

What they offer is something else.

Like Mr. Trump’s tendency to turn every courtroom appearance into a form of entertainment that can be used as a campaign op, his effort to commoditize his legal jeopardy is a long-term strategic play. In reducing his indictments to a slogan on a consumer good, he is reducing their gravity.

It’s a form of insidious trivialization, the sort of tactic that plays perfectly in the landscape of late-stage capitalism in which everything is a product for sale. Oh, those old federal charges? They’re not serious; they’re a style choice. He’s transforming indictments into accessories, a language everyone speaks. The more product he sells, the more he makes a mockery of his situation. That’s where the real profit lies.
