Physical Science: Energy Introduction and Conceptual Flow Narrative

Introduction: This Grade 6 Physical Science Unit focuses on energy in earth systems and addresses the California Science Standards for 6th grade for the topic of energy in Earth systems and Investigation and Experimentation Standards. By the end of the unit students know that the sun is the major source of energy for earth systems. Solar energy reaches the Earth as radiation in the form of visible light. Convection currents distribute the sun’s heat in the atmosphere and oceans. Heat is transferred in Earth solids by conduction. Energy can be carried from one place to another by heat flow, waves including water, light, sound or by moving objects. Energy is transferred and transformed between different forms of energy. Applications of energy doing work include experiences with windmills, water wheels, heat from a peanut, solar powered batteries and balloons.

Concepts about Energy in Earth Systems are used throughout the following grade six Earth Science Units: Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Volcanoes, and Weathering and Erosion. Energy provides the force to change the surface of the Earth through weathering and erosion. Interior energy (heat) provides the force to move and change Earth materials below the surface. The interior convection currents change the surface of the Earth through Earthquakes and Volcanoes as well as the Plate Tectonic movement.

The Grade 6 Physical Science Unit on Energy in Earth Systems is presented to students through a series of investigations using indirect evidence (models) and direct evidence, experiments, active learning experiences, researching using a variety of sources, questions, and assessments. Assessments include: pre-, post and one formative assessment.

Conceptual Flow Narrative: The Grade 6 Conceptual Flow Narrative for Physical Science: Energy in Earth Systems builds on the concepts presented on the conceptual flow graphic by describing the concept(s) addressed in each lesson and the links that connect each lesson to the next. Lessons are linked to the previous lesson and the lesson that follows via a conceptual storyline enabling the development of student understanding as they progress from one concept to the next.

After students have completed the Pre-Assessment, they begin their exploration of Energy with Lesson 1 “Forms of Energy” . Forms of Energy is an introduction to the many forms of energy that can do work. Energy station materials are explored and discussed to clarify characteristics of each form of energy. This lesson links to the next lesson, which further classifies energy into potential and kinetic energy.

During the previous lesson, students learned that there are multiple forms of energy. Lesson 2 “Potential and Kinetic Energy” continues the exploration of energy by using observations collected in the first lesson and identifying characteristics of potential energy (stored energy or the ability to do work) and kinetic energy (energy in motion). The transfer and transformation between forms of energy is explored in the next lesson.

Lesson 3, “Energy Transfer & Transformation,” links to the previous lesson by providing applications that transfer and transform energy to another form to complete a task. The Rube Goldberg designs challenge students to explain changes that stay in the same form of energy (transfer) and changes that change energy to another form (transform). During the next lesson, explanations for the sun’s transfer and transformation of solar energy is explored.

Having learned that energy is transferred and transformed in the previous lessons, Lesson 4 “Thermal Energy Flow in Materials” begins with an investigation that measures how materials are heated using radiant energy (light) from the sun. Two additional demonstrations provide examples of how heat continues to flow through other Earth materials such as air and liquids. Another investigation explores how different materials transfer heat by conduction at different rates.

Differences in how thermal energy flows in materials (uneven heating) causes wind on Earth. Wind energy can be harnessed to do work. During Lesson 5 “Wind Energy” experiments with windmills transfers wind energy to mechanical energy providing forces to turn windmills. In the next lesson, students learn the energy from the force of moving water can be used to do work.

Moving water provides the force to move a water wheel in Lesson 6 “Energy from Water Wheels” . The water wheel is like the windmill in previous lesson and both can transfer or transform energy to another form to do work. Examples include providing energy for turbines to generate electricity or lifting heavy objects. In the next lesson, students learn energy from food provides heat for fuel for humans.

Lesson 7, “Peanut Energy” explores how peanuts store energy that transforms to heat energy when burned. The energy of the peanut (foods) can be transformed into energy used by living things to function and stay alive.

Lessons 1-7 develop conceptual understanding of transfer and transformation of energy in Earth systems. The formative assessment #1 assesses student understanding of the multiple ways energy can be transferred and transformed.

In “Formative Assessment #1″ , students design a logical series of transfer and transformation using pictures of a variety of forms of energy. Evidence from the assessment indicates the understanding of transfer and transformation possibilities.

Energy that is transferred or transformed starts with a source. Lesson 8 “Solar Energy” introduces a comparison of sources of energy for batteries. Solar batteries use the sun as a source for energy. Chemical batteries use chemical reactions as a source for energy. This links to the next lesson that explores renewable and non-renewable sources for energy.

Lesson 9 “Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy Sources” summarizes that all energy has a source. Renewable sources replenish within a lifetime. Non-renewable energy sources are not replenished within a lifetime. Benefits and drawbacks of different sources are explored.

Upon completion of the eight lessons, students take a Post-Assessment to determine their overall understanding of the concepts presented in the unit.

Engineers must always decide on what solutions are best in a given situation. Engineers who are developing alternative energy systems must consider a variety of different constraints and criteria for choosing which source might be best for a particular application. The technical effectiveness is one way to chose the best (for example, need a lot of sunny days for solar energy), but environmental and economic criteria are also important.

After this activity, students should be able to:

  • Identify at least five sources of energy.
  • Explain why an increased dependence on renewable energy sources is an inevitable part of our future.
  • Describe how the depletion of fossil fuels is a serious global issue.

Who remembers what our unit project is all about? (Be prepared to state this again.) One of the key steps in our problem solving spiral is "to gather information." We've been gathering information about energy sources and why we might want to consider using some energy sources more than others. One way to change is to consider a different source of energy. But we need to learn more! If you were to consider implementing a different energy source and conversion process, what would you want to know about it? (Lead a class brainstorming session.)

  • How it can be used in your home

In the few classes we will learn more about these sources so that we can evaluate whether any of them might be suitable recommendations for our energy project. Think about how these various energy alternatives might be utilized in your project as we go through this research.

  • Divide the class into groups of three students each.
  • Hand out the research packets and activity sheets. (Note: Two versions available, one as homework and one as an in-class group activity.)
  • Each group answer one question for all seven energy sources.
  • Assign each group one of the seven research questions (If fewer than seven groups, choose just a few questions, preferably how it works, one economic question, one environmental question, etc.). The "how things work" question might warrant a few groups assigned to it with each group just answering the question for a few of the sources.
  • Explain to students that by doing this research, they will become experts on the specific aspect of energy sources. (For example, they will be experts on the environmental effects of energy sources.)
  • Each group makes a decision based on the specific aspect they researched, as to which source is best.
  • This may take more than one day. Have students who finish early move on to the next step outlined in the following day.
  • Have each group prepare one-page handouts summarizing findings.
  • Give each group a blank piece of regular copy paper and markers.
  • In preparation for the next day's class, make copies of each handout for each student. Make a transparency of the handout for the groups to use for their presentations.
  • Have each group present its handout to the class.
  • Write on the board which energy source each group felt was best.
  • As a class, discuss the pros and cons and decide which ones are most feasible for a home.
  • Relate this to the semester project: How might you use this information to address the question posed at the beginning of the energy unit?
  • Tell students that in the next class they will look at the systems for those sources.
  • If extra time, use the Energy Trivia PowerPoint to review the facts students researched.

Worksheets: Collect and grade student presentations and worksheets. Students' abilities to answer questions and participate in the discussion after the research provides an indication of how much they understand the various aspects of these systems and can weigh their pros and cons.

An object suspended at height has gravitational potential energy. For example, a ball or a skier at a height. A raised hammer possesses gravitational potential energy that holds the ability to displace a nail (work).

The higher and bigger in mass, the greater would be their potential energy!  The potential energy can be calculated by multiplying the mass, acceleration due to gravity (a constant), and the height of the object.

2) Magnetic Potential Energy –

We have learnt that opposite poles of two magnets attract and their like poles repel. The closer the opposite poles of two magnets, the more is the potential energy in them.

3) Chemical potential Energy –

The energy stored in food, fuels, batteries are examples of chemical energy. When we eat food, the chemical energy in food gets transformed to give us the energy to do mechanical work.

4) Elastic Energy –

Spring has more potential energy when it is compressed or stretched. For example, when we wind a mechanical clock, we are storing potential energy in its spring. As the spring loosens, energy is released slowly that turns the hands of the clock! When an arrow is placed in a bow with the string pulled back, the arrow has potential energy and can go far and even hurt someone (work).

Kinetic energy

Kinetic energy is the energy of mass in motion .

Kinetic energy can be classified into five types –

1) radiant energy –.

Solar energy, light from bulbs and other lighting devices, heating elements in toasters and other appliances, x-rays, radio waves are examples of radiant kinetic energy that travel or move in waves or particles.

2) Thermal Energy –

While baking a pizza or boiling water, the molecules in them move as they release heat, they are examples of thermal energy.

3) Sound Energy –

Our voices, speakers, musical instruments, chirping of birds or any sound is caused by vibrations of particles . The source of sound creates waves that reach our eardrums through these vibrations.

4) Electrical Energy –

Electricity is the flow of electrons around a circuit. So there is movement all around us as we switch on the lights and heaters, it also means that all the electrical appliances in our houses work on this kinetic energy!

5) Mechanical Energy –

Any visible moving body around you possesses mechanical energy – a moving car, a moving ball, a running girl, a boy playing the piano with his moving fingers, etc. Aside from this, wind and a flowing river also have mechanical energy that we harness to generate electricity. Mechanical energy has two types of energy , such as potential and kinetic energy.

Kinetic energy depends on the mass and velocity of the object. The greater the mass and velocity, the greater would be the magnitude of kinetic energy.

This means that if the velocity of the object doubles, it’s kinetic energy would quadruple!

The potential and kinetic energy in a pendulum

Energy can be transformed from one form to another. The best example of potential energy converting into kinetic energy and vice versa is a pendulum. When we hold a pendulum on one side, it has a certain amount of potential energy. When we let it go, the pendulum will swing back and forth. The potential energy thus is converted into kinetic energy and back to potential and so on and so forth over and over again.

  • At position A, the bob has potential energy. As the bob moves down to B and C, the potential energy starts to get converted into kinetic energy.
  • At C, all the energy is converted into kinetic energy.
  • At E all the energy is converted back to potential energy.
  • At B and D, the bob has a combination of both.

Ideally, as per the law of conservation of energy, the bob should keep moving forever. But the bob eventually stops as it loses energy in the form of friction with air, heat, and sound.

Trivia: William Rankine of Scotland had introduced the term potential energy in 1853.

These worksheets cover many topics such as climate change, five senses and parts of animals and plants. The fun activities and worksheets help students become engaged in the learning process. Students learn how to read a thermometer and how it works by completing activities related to the topic.

Students in Grade 3 can use worksheets for information about different species of animals and plants. Students can also learn more about the human body, and the different functions of its systems. For example, a worksheet on the life cycle of the chicken includes a series of activities that explain how a chicken grows from an egg to a chicken. Another worksheet is about electricity. This worksheet includes cut-and-paste activities and diagrams. It also contains a spinwheel.

It teaches elementary concepts and helps kids to develop vocabulary as well as reasoning skills.
