Air Force Decorations Part 2 of 2

The post I did about the 13S/1C6X1 career field along with the link included to the reddit post by SilentD provides some great information about the overview of our career field.  The purpose of this post is to further explain some of the more in depth processes, vision, and intent regarding our assignments.

Breadth vs. Depth

As of the writing of this post, AFSPC leadership’s intent for a 13S’s career is to have two Operational Tours or ‘Ops Tours’ under our belt before we move on to do bigger and better things.  This discussion is often closely related to the breadth vs. depth discussion, which in short is whether or not it is better to have breadth of experience (i.e., one tour at every different type of space assignment) or depth of experience (i.e., extensive experience in one or maybe two assignments within similar fields.)  In other words is it better to have experience in all shreds of space (spacelift, satellite command and control, or Missile Warning) or extensive experience in just Missile Warning?  Personally, I think two assignments is the sweet spot of ideal experience so I agree with AFSPC’s current direction on this.  The two ops tour policy is not a hard requirement, it is more of a general goal AFPC uses as they walk us through our career paths.  For example as a brand new 2d Lt I will almost certainly do two ops tours, but a Capt who cross-flowed into 13S from 62XX will probably only do one because he or she is 4-5 years further down their career.

AFPC Assignment Availability Code

In order for AFPC to maintain control of our tours and tour length, they use Assignment Availability Codes IAW AFI 36-2110.  The below memorandum signed January 15, 2015 dictates that with a few exceptions 13S tour length is 36 or 48 months depending on the unit.  The time doesn’t start until you are combat mission ready/mission ready (CMR/MR) so it can be up to one year until your time on station actually starts.  For example here is how my timeline played out.  I was extremely fortunate so consider my case the best-case scenario:

  • Graduated OTS
  • +2 months – casual status
  • +3 months – Undergraduate Space Training (UST) at Vandenberg AFB, CA
  • +3 months – Mission Qualification Training (MQT) at my first base
  • TOTAL:  10 months after graduating OTS, finally on console doing the job

I was in training for 10 months so my 36/48 month tour didn’t start until 10 months (CMR date) after I graduated OTS.  Some of my peers were in training for even up to 18 months so that was a significant part of their career spent in limbo.  I consider 18 months the worst-case scenario.

AFPC controls these tours by Assignment Availability Codes which are outlined in AFI 36-2110.  AAC codes may sound familiar because if you were active duty when you applied for OTS you had to have an AAC 05.  Here is the definition for AAC 55:

AAC 55:  CONUS Minimum Stabilized Tour, Applies to Officers, Tours controlled by HQ USAF and HQ AFPC, Deferment Period or Effective Date:  Date assigned plus number of years authorized.  (In our case, the number of years authorized is either 36 or 48 months.)

The memo also mentions Code 56, but this doesn’t make sense to me because the AFI states it applies to enlisted.  Regardless, the process and basic premise should be the same.

assignment availability code 56

Stabilized Tour Guide

The AFI also references something called the Stabilized Tour Guide, but the link they provide does not work.  This guide can be found on MyPers by searching “Stabilized Tour Guide.”  While it doesn’t specifically spell out the details for 13S’s, it does provide some additional information regarding the differences between minimum and maximum stabilized tours.  It is worth a glance but not crucial.

Click here for the link to MyPers (Air Force personnel access only)

To re-iterate, yes, this does indeed mean that you could be at your first base 4-5 years.  If you are only planning to do four years then punch, knowing this could be a critical point in your decision-making process.  Additionally, this can be HUGE if you are a 63XX officer doing an OPEX tour in a 13S billet.  I should mention that there are indeed short tours out there which are 12-18 months so this can significantly change your timeline.

Hey man, thanks for doing this blog. I have a question, I am in the beginning stages of applying and I was wondering if I could pick your brain about the Air Force lifestyle? My wife is on the fence about me joining and my only experience was the army national guard and 1 deployment, so it is not a good barometer of the AD lifestyle.

Either way, I appreciate these updates.

Of course, that would also help me out with similar themed posts. Air Force is light years different than army so please do pick my brain. Either post here or email me at airforceotsguy@gmail.com

26AFI36-2110 5OCTOBER 2018 2.7.Medical Deferment or Limitation.Worldwide commitments require every Airman to be physically qualified for immediate global reassignment, except as indicated below.2.7.1.Temporary Medical Deferment. An Airman may be deferred from PCS or TDY when a temporary medical condition (expected to last less than 12 months) prevents worldwide service. When an authorized official at the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) updates a temporary medical deferment, an automatic interface with the personnel data system processes an assignment availability code 31 (Table 2.1) if the date of availability is 30 calendar days or more from the date of the AF Form 469, Duty Limiting Conditions Report. For deferments of less than 30 calendar days, do not authorize an assignment availability code 31. The date of availability cannot exceed and cannot be extended beyond 12 months from the date when the underlying defect was deemed, or clearly should have been deemed, disqualifying for worldwide duty. When an Airman is scheduled for a mandatory PCS while temporarily medically deferred from PCS, medical treatment facility officials determine if the Airman should proceed on PCS and can be evaluated and/or treated upon arrival at the next duty station, or whether the Airman should be evaluated and/or treated at the current station. If the medical treatment facility determines the Airman should be evaluated at the current location, the MPF will reclama the assignment (see paragraph 5.33) upon written notification. (T-1)The assignment OPR will request assistance from HQ AFPC/DP2NP (RegAF) / AFRC/SGP (AFR) / NGB/SGP (ANG), Medical Retention Standards Branch, to determine the appropriate assignment action based on the medical circumstances.2.7.2.Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) and Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) Deferment. Medical treatment facilities submit an AF Form 469 on Airmen with physical limitations not of a temporary nature, that interfere with worldwide assignability, to indicate a medical evaluation board isbeing processed. The automatic personnel data system interface updates an assignment availability code 37. If the Airman’s personnel record reflects an assignment availability code 31, Temporary Medical Deferment, the assignment availability code is automatically removed and replaced with assignment availability code 37, Medical Evaluation Board or Physical Evaluation Board (see Table 2.1). Per AFI 36-3212, Physical Evaluation for Retention, Retirement and Separations,an Airman pending a Medical Evaluation Board or Physical Evaluation Board may not be reassigned PCS or TDY (or granted leave outside the local area, separated, or retired) until the medical treatment facility determines the medical disposition.2.7.2.1.(RegAF)If circumstances arise regarding the assignment status of an Airman pending a medical evaluation board or physical evaluation board, (example: for an Airman serving overseas, it appears the date eligible for return from OS (DEROS) expires beforea final determination is made), the MPF will advise the assignment OPR via email and provide complete details. (T-1)The MPF will provide an information copy to HQ AFPC/DP2NP and HQ AFPC/DP3AM. (T-1) Guidance is provided as appropriate. NOTE:An assignment availability code 31 or 37 does not preclude an Airman from separating or retiring, therefore these personnel actions should be monitored by other AFI36-2110 5 OCTOBER 201827means. The DEROS is not involuntarily extended for medical reasons. When appropriate medical authority determines an Airman is not medically cleared for PCS, and assignment availability code 31 or 37 is updated, the Airman is ordered to remain in place and the DEROS is allowed to expire. When Airmen are medically cleared for PCS near or after their DEROS, the MPF advises the assignment office of primary responsibility, with information copy to HQ AFPC/DP2NP and HQ AFPC/DP3AM, of the circumstances and requests assignment disposition.2.7.2.2.2.13 (ARC only)Reserve component members cannot be involuntarily retained on orders. However, they may receive Medical Continuation (MEDCON) orders or receive incapacitation pay as specified in AFI 36-2910, Line of Duty (LOD) Determination, Medical Continuation (MEDCON), and Incapacitation (INCAP) Pay.2.8.Dependent Care.

I'm going through something similar, was coded 31 for Asthma then received an overseas assignment to Misawa the next week. Basically what I have learned is that at the 120 day mark AFPC will review for medical clearance and determine if the gaining location has the medical facilities to provide continued treatment. At that point if they determine that it cannot support the medical needs of the member then they will reclama the orders. Unfortunately in my experience even though I see one of the few MD's on base as my PCM, even he cant make the determination and say for sure what's going to happen. In my case he has strongly suggested that my orders are going to get turned off once the medical review is completed, but its got to go through the process for that. Anyway this is what my PCM explained to me, as far as I have been able to read its accurate but I will defer to the more experienced in this matter. My 120 day mark is June 15th, I should hear back then if I keep my assignment (probably not).

yeah. it probably shouldn't happen but it did. probably because Im a mandatory mover so that may have tripped things up. yeah im headed for a med board. PCM was hinting pretty hard that i should be ready. they are doing a DAWG on me right now. which will they recommend IRILO since Im non deployable and not able to do my job since its a lot of manual labor. Ill let you know what happens. Right now its just a waiting game for AFPC to kill the assignment. Oh wow, i am surprised you received an assignment AFTER you were coded.. So you think you are going to likely get med boarded then? Please let me know what happens and best of luck to you.

Gemini 1.5: Our next-generation model, now available for Private Preview in Google AI Studio

February 15, 2024

assignment availability code 56

Last week, we released Gemini 1.0 Ultra in Gemini Advanced. You can try it out now by signing up for a Gemini Advanced subscription . The 1.0 Ultra model, accessible via the Gemini API, has seen a lot of interest and continues to roll out to select developers and partners in Google AI Studio .

Today, we’re also excited to introduce our next-generation Gemini 1.5 model , which uses a new Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) approach to improve efficiency. It routes your request to a group of smaller "expert” neural networks so responses are faster and higher quality.

Developers can sign up for our Private Preview of Gemini 1.5 Pro , our mid-sized multimodal model optimized for scaling across a wide-range of tasks. The model features a new, experimental 1 million token context window, and will be available to try out in  Google AI Studio . Google AI Studio is the fastest way to build with Gemini models and enables developers to easily integrate the Gemini API in their applications. It’s available in 38 languages across 180+ countries and territories .

1,000,000 tokens: Unlocking new use cases for developers

Before today, the largest context window in the world for a publicly available large language model was 200,000 tokens. We’ve been able to significantly increase this — running up to 1 million tokens consistently, achieving the longest context window of any large-scale foundation model. Gemini 1.5 Pro will come with a 128,000 token context window by default, but today’s Private Preview will have access to the experimental 1 million token context window.

We’re excited about the new possibilities that larger context windows enable. You can directly upload large PDFs, code repositories, or even lengthy videos as prompts in Google AI Studio. Gemini 1.5 Pro will then reason across modalities and output text.

Upload multiple files and ask questions We’ve added the ability for developers to upload multiple files, like PDFs, and ask questions in Google AI Studio. The larger context window allows the model to take in more information — making the output more consistent, relevant and useful. With this 1 million token context window, we’ve been able to load in over 700,000 words of text in one go. Gemini 1.5 Pro can find and reason from particular quotes across the Apollo 11 PDF transcript.
[Video sped up for demo purposes]
Query an entire code repository The large context window also enables a deep analysis of an entire codebase, helping Gemini models grasp complex relationships, patterns, and understanding of code. A developer could upload a new codebase directly from their computer or via Google Drive, and use the model to onboard quickly and gain an understanding of the code. Gemini 1.5 Pro can help developers boost productivity when learning a new codebase.
Add a full length video Gemini 1.5 Pro can also reason across up to 1 hour of video. When you attach a video, Google AI Studio breaks it down into thousands of frames (without audio), and then you can perform highly sophisticated reasoning and problem-solving tasks since the Gemini models are multimodal. Gemini 1.5 Pro can perform reasoning and problem-solving tasks across video and other visual inputs.

More ways for developers to build with Gemini models

In addition to bringing you the latest model innovations, we’re also making it easier for you to build with Gemini:

Easy tuning. Provide a set of examples, and you can customize Gemini for your specific needs in minutes from inside Google AI Studio. This feature rolls out in the next few days.
New developer surfaces . Integrate the Gemini API to build new AI-powered features today with new Firebase Extensions , across your development workspace in Project IDX , or with our newly released Google AI Dart SDK .
Lower pricing for Gemini 1.0 Pro . We’re also updating the 1.0 Pro model, which offers a good balance of cost and performance for many AI tasks. Today’s stable version is priced 50% less for text inputs and 25% less for outputs than previously announced. The upcoming pay-as-you-go plans for AI Studio are coming soon.

Since December, developers of all sizes have been building with Gemini models, and we’re excited to turn cutting edge research into early developer products in Google AI Studio . Expect some latency in this preview version due to the experimental nature of the large context window feature, but we’re excited to start a phased rollout as we continue to fine-tune the model and get your feedback. We hope you enjoy experimenting with it early on, like we have.
