Therefore, the amount you spend on business plan writing services (and other consulting services such as legal services) needs to be negligible relative to the amount raised.

The other drawback is that you usually don't own the business plan itself: you just get the output, while the actual document is saved in the consultant's business plan software - which makes it difficult to maintain the document up to date without hiring the consultant on a retainer.

Start a Rice Business in the Philippines: 3 Options You Can Do

I’ll try not to bore you with overused facts. You already know how rice is to Filipinos and that’s probably why you’re looking into how to start a rice business in the Philippines. I caught up with Bryan Dizon, my brother-in-law, farmer extraordinaire, and owner of  Javenri Harvest Farm   (“Javenri”), and asked the questions you may have on rice production and selling in our country. Though I suspect the lessons here apply to other countries, too.

The Rice Value Chain and Players

When we say rice business or  bigasan , the most common interpretation is that of a retailer or wholesaler. But there are several ways you can get into the industry. Here’s a list of your options as a business. We’ll also talk about the profit margins you might expect per business type. 

Rice business value chain

All of the succeeding data are from the  Philippine Statistics Authority  (PSA) as presented by the  Department of Agriculture  (DA) in their training for trainers. 

A lot of functions also overlap and may be carried out by a single player. For example, farmers may go directly to millers or even retailers. Skipping a few steps may mean more profit but also at the expense of more work. 

Growers or farmers

The value chain starts with the farmers or growers. In terms of profit per kilogram, they have the highest at Php4.33/kg.

Keep in mind though that this is over the course of the entire process. That’s until harvesting or about 3 months in total. We’re not even mentioning the labor-intensive nature of a grower’s business.

Traders get the fresh unhusked rice ( palay ) and dry them ready for milling. As the middlemen between farmers and retailers, they’ve been given a bad rap for a few reasons (e.g., hoarding). But as long as farm-to-market roads are unavailable, traders have an important role to fill. 

Wholesalers and retailers

For people who want to start, the most popular rice business option is selling because it is a straightforward process. You look for a good location, apply for the relevant business permits and licenses ( BIR , DTI/SEC,  NFA ), buy the necessary equipment and assets, set up your management system, and so on.  

What high demand means to you as a business

The good news is, demand for rice in the Philippines is high. As a country, we’re consistently in the  Top 10 Rice Consumers in the World . Here’s the bad news: High demand doesn’t automatically imply large profits. 

That’s a common misconception prevalent in the industry. I got this quote from one of the top results in Google.

Sorry, but NO! This approach fails to see the other side of the same coin,  supply . If both supply and demand are high, then it’s a wash. There may even be billions or trillions of rice sacks demanded, but if supply is as widespread as demand, then that just means smaller margins for you, and potentially a losing business. 

Let’s get back to the dealership example in the quote. If it’s that easy to enter the market as a dealer, then you’re most likely going up against entrepreneurs who want the same pie. The low barriers to entry mean more players, and ultimately smaller profits per dealer (and occasionally losses).

The point here being profit margins are dictated by more than just demand . There’s supply, which is partly determined by barriers to entry, and there are other economic factors to consider.

Understanding this is crucial when assessing the expected returns that follow.

The expected profits mentioned in the following texts are also from the PSA, presented by the DA. The margins per business model are also presented in this table.

According to the dataset from the Philippine Statistics Authority: 1. Farmer (fresh palay) = 27.8% 2. Palay trader (dry palay) = 2.7% 3. Miller trader (milled rice) = 6.7% 4. Wholesaler (milled rice) = 1.6% 5. Retailer (milled rice) = 2.8%

Keep in mind that the returns are based on PSA’s sales and profit figures, and do not consider external economic and non-economic factors. That is, you may be getting less per kilogram as a trader, but also consider that it takes less effort and risk. When choosing a rice business type, capital, business plan complexity, and niche are also factors to think about. And of course, your risk tolerance and preferences should be taken into account.

Consider these tradeoffs when choosing a rice business model to pursue.

Movement towards Mechanization 

In 2019, the Rice Tariffication law ( RA 11203 ) was signed, allocating Php10 billion per year towards the mechanization, training, credit, and other initiatives for the betterment of the Philippine rice industry. 

This has some implications for you as a business player in the rice industry. 

One example is the  potential for higher gains due to the mechanization , and lower overhead, of operations. This has been a contentious act though due to the lost jobs for farmers. But the idea, at least in economic theory, is they’ll eventually shift jobs to more productive uses. The change in work enhances the overall productivity of the economy. 

It’s a short-term problem with a long-term gain.

Other aspects to take note of the excess tariff are financial assistance, land titling, crop insurance, farm diversification. The gist is this: We’re making strides to increase the competitiveness of the Philippine rice industry relative to our ASEAN neighbors.  Riding this wave as an entrepreneur might not be a bad idea. 

People wanting to start rice businesses in the Philippines should know that there are opportunities other than rice selling as retail or wholesale rice suppliers . Your 3 options are as a (1) grower/farmer, (2) trader, and (3) wholesaler/retailer.

PSA statistics are of great help, but keep in mind the economic tradeoffs per business model. Higher earnings usually come at the cost of more work and risks.

This study examined the importance of indigenous institutional arrangements in rice production and processing activities in Ogun State, Nigeria through the use of Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). Analyses from the study showed that agricultural financing constitutes the greatest challenge that affects rice production and processing. Other findings from the discourse revealed that in some rice producing areas where there is the existence of rice farmers' clusters; there is access to modern rice processing machines such as winnowers, threshers and destoners. The operations of Rice Growers Association of Nigerian-RGAN in Ogun State are coordinated by the executive committee, which constitute the indigenous institutional arrangement. This study recommends that sincere and concerted efforts on the part of the government in implementing the goals of Agricultural Transformation Agenda be made to engender the welfare of rice farmers through the development of the rice value chain. The need for actively involving the rice farmers through the RGAN is also germane. This study analyzed the profitability of paddy rice production in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, which identified the different sources of risk involved in its production and also compared the effects of the risk management practices and techniques adopted by farmers in the course of a profitable production. Data were collected from 60 randomly selected paddy rice farmers using a well structured questionnaire and analyzed using the descriptive statistics, gross margin model and multiple regression analysis to determine the socioeconomic characteristics, profitability and relationship between the risk management techniques investigated and the farmer's profit respectively. The result showed that 97% were male, 88% married and had an average household size of 10 people. It was interesting to realize that all respondents had one form of education or the other and their average farm size was 15 ha producing about 3.2 tons of paddy per ha. The average variable cost incurred per hectare was estimated to be $866.3 (N172, 400) while the total cost was $1002 (N199,400) and a revenue of $1768.84 (N352,000) was generated. This puts the gross profit at $902.51 (N179,600) and net returns at $766.83 (N152,600). Several risk classified as technical, market, financial, social and political were identified but majority of the farmers highlighted the technical risk consisting of pest/diseases among others as the major source of risk in paddy production. Practices such as use of agro-chemicals, fertilizer, improved seeds, non-farm businesses, and farm insurance were adopted to mitigate and reduce effects of some of these risks. The regression result showed that farm size, use of agro-chemicals, farm insurance and improved seeds were all positively related to the farmer's income and significant at 5% probability level and (R 2) explained 78% of the total variation in farmer's returns. The use of fertilizer was significant but negatively related to farmer's returns. This could be due to poor application techniques or excess use of it. The formation cooperative society on the other hand was positively related but not significant at 5% probability level. The absence of these risk management techniques indicated a decrease in the net returns by a constant value of (-0.923). This study however concluded that paddy rice production in the study area is a profitable enterprise and consistent government policies that would favor paddy production, market information, extension service delivery, input subsidization and credit facilities should be implemented.

The broad objective of this study was to analyse the structure and conduct of rice marketing in Benue State, Nigeria. A total of two hundred and forty questionnaires were administered to the respondents in the three geopolitical Zones of the State using a multi-stage sampling procedure. The objectives were achieved using descriptive statistics and Lorenz Curve. The study found that majority (65.4%) are small holder farmers with sales income of 200,000 Naira or less per annum. Most respondents are members of marketing associations, source information through middlemen and sell their paddy based on current prices. The results further showed that there is freedom of entry and exit into the market as well as, lack of adequate marketing information. There is inequality in the market power concentration. The Gini Coefficient for Zone A (0.53) is higher than Zone B (0.46) and Zone C (0.46). The market structure was found to be oligopsonistic. Majority of the respondents sell their paddy immediately after harvest, they rely on family or personal sources for business finance, they have attended training related to their business, they sell improved varieties of paddy and they do not collude to fix prices, nor advertise their paddy for sale. The study recommends that government should provide financial support to foster farmer-operated rice processing facilities.

Agriculture has for once been the main source of income in Nigeria, but during the oil boom era, agriculture was sidelined for petroleum products as the major source of income, since then, agricultural products has suffered significant setback as most of our food were imported from foreign countries, apart from the fact that many people are no more interested in agriculture, most youths now migrate to urban centres in search of white-collared jobs. This study thus looks in the impacts of agricultural produce on development using selected rice producing communities of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State as case study. It employs the agricultural land use theory and the productivity concept as the basis of its theoretical underpinning. The study involves the use of descriptive research design and the primary source of data collection in a bid to collecting relevant data from producers and consumers using 200 questionnaires. The data collected were presented using the descriptive statistics. The study examines the problems confronting rice production in the study area and suggests recommendations for the remedies of the noted problems. The study will be of great help to researchers and government agencies.

There is the growing concern for food security in Nigeria today, with particular focus on rice being a staple food. If effective policies must be made to improve rice production, it is important to examine the phenomena underlying its consumption in the first place. Therefore, this study evaluated the socioeconomic determinants of local rice consumption in South West Nigeria, using Ekiti state as a reference point. A two stage random sampling technique was used to survey one hundred rice consumer households in two local government areas of Ekiti state. The data for the study were collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used for data analysis. The study revealed that 51% of the respondents were between the ages of 31-40 years, 77% were married with a moderate family size of between 5-7 persons. Majority (60%) were civil servants who earned between 30-40,000 naira monthly and spent 10-20% of their income on local rice consumption. The regression analysis showed that, age, marital status, level of education and occupation have positive effects on local rice consumption. Income on the other hand have a negative effect on local rice consumption, an indication that as people’s income rise they tends to shift from local rice consumption to imported rice. It is therefore recommended that improved varieties of rice be provided for farmers coupled with improved rice milling technology and processing facilities to improve the quality of local rice in Nigeria in order to encourage consumer preference. This study analysed the performance of paddy rice marketing in Benue State, Nigeria. The population of the study was made up of rice farmers in the three (3) geopolitical Zones of the State. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used for this study. One Local Government Area was selected from each of the geopolitical Zones. A total of two hundred and forty questionnaires were administered to the respondents. The objectives were achieved using descriptive statistics and Gross Margin analysis while the hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis, student t-test and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation. Majority (68.1%) of the respondents have attained some formal education, (66.9%) have market experience of over ten years, (50.7%) have household size between 6 and 10, (87.3%) are less than fifty years of age, (89.3%) are male while, (65.4%) are small holder farmers with sales income of 200,000 Naira or less per annum. The study also found that Gross Margin per hectare for paddy production in the study area was 112,123.56 Naira while paddy rice marketing was 126% price efficient. The study accepts the alternate hypotheses that states that: the socioeconomic characteristics of respondents have significant effect on efficiency; rice marketing in Benue State is profitable and the null hypothesis which states that the rice market in Benue State is not integrated. The study recommends that government should rehabilitate rural feeder roads to enable easy movement of produce and provide credit to encourage increase in farm sizes while marketers should form unions to enable them benefit from economy of scale and enrol for training on entrepreneurship.

Rice business plan competition announces 2024 student startups, graduate student-led ventures from around the world will compete for more than $1 million in prizes.

HOUSTON – (Mar. 4, 2024) – The 2024 Rice Business Plan Competition (RBPC) has announced the 42 startups that will compete for more than $1 million in prizes Apr. 4-6 at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

The RBPC, hosted by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and the Jones Graduate School of Business in its 24th year, brings together the best student ventures from top universities across the world to compete for prizes in front of more than 350 angel, venture capital and corporate investors and members of the business community.

After a rigorous and competitive application process, the judging team selected 42 startups led by students who are pushing to create new possibilities in technology, energy, health care and building solutions that shape a better future . This year’s invited startups represent 35 universities from four countries.

“We had an excellent field of candidates this year, making it incredibly difficult to narrow down the pool of applicants to 42 and double the amount of judge screeners joined in to help identify the best startups, showing us just the level of excitement around this year’s competition,” said Catherine Santamaria, director of the RBPC. “I commend all the student startups who took the time and effort to submit an application and look forward to meeting the stellar startups who will join us on campus in April.”

The student entrepreneurs gain real-world experience to pitch their startups, enhance their business strategy and learn what it takes to launch a successful company. With a goal of not only competing for cash but also understanding what it takes to secure investment, raise awareness and launch a successful venture, these graduate students will pitch their companies through four rounds of competition over three days in hopes of taking home the grand prize.

The 42 ventures for RBPC 2024:

Over 23 years , the RBPC has grown from nine teams competing for $10,000 in prize money in 2001 to 42 teams from around the world competing for more $1 million in cash and prizes. It is the largest and richest student startup competition in the world. Over two decades, 826 teams have raised more than $5.5 billion in capital with 56 successful exits and five public companies.

The RBPC is hosted and organized by the  Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship , Rice’s internationally recognized initiative devoted to the support of entrepreneurship, and  Rice Business , which has been nationally recognized as the No. 1 graduate entrepreneurship program.

Rice at climatecap: building mba skillsets at the intersection of business and climate.

We recently returned from this year’s ClimateCAP  Summit — the leading MBA climate conference, where students from top business schools gather to learn, discuss and collaborate on various issues at the intersection of climate change and business.

Many people are unaware of the networking and learning opportunities ClimateCAP offers MBA students, so we want to share a glimpse into our experience with a quick Q&A. You can learn more about us and the conference at our profiles linked below.

1.   What is your area of focus? What are your post-MBA career goals?

Dana Vazquez:  I am concentrating in energy and entrepreneurship. I will be working at Cisco Systems in their FLEX Rising Leaders program , with a focus on sustainability and governance. 

Nikki Beittenmiller:  I am concentrating in energy with a focus on public and private investment in energy transition across the energy value chain. After completing my MBA, I’ll be joining Quanta Services as a member of the energy transition strategy and corporate development team. 

Derek Fry:  I am concentrating in energy. My goal post-MBA is to secure a job with a renewable energy developer and operator. 

2.   How would you describe ClimateCAP, and why did you attend?

Dana Vazquez:  Every year, MBAs gather at ClimateCAP to learn, discuss and collaborate on various issues at the intersection of climate and business. I love connecting with other MBAs and have found that ClimateCAP is one of my favorite events in business school! When I was coming for my MBA, I would see people in my network attending the conference and thought it looked like a great way to build my own expertise. 

Nikki Beittenmiller:  I followed ClimateCAP even before starting business school, and once I got to Rice I was excited to finally participate. The summit is an awesome networking and learning opportunity. The discussions and workshops helped me connect what I was learning in class to real-world business problems. Beyond the summit, ClimateCAP offers additional resources for MBAs interested in climate, such as their MBA Academy and Fellows program.

Derek Fry:  Connecting with other MBAs with similar career interests was a lot of fun and coffee chatting with sponsors opened the door for potential job opportunities.

3.  who were this year’s notable speakers what are some of your key takeaways.

Dana Vazquez:  There were many incredible speakers — but I have to say the ESG workshop with Professor Jerry Davis was a definite highlight! I loved his energy, wisdom and generosity. I also really enjoyed the fireside chat with Donnel Baird , founder and CEO at BlocPower. 

Nikki Beittenmiller:  Hard to pick from the phenomenal speaker lineup, but I was particularly invested in the panel conversation with Jeff Blau , CEO of Related Companies, and Ryan Brown , COO of energyRe. Every part of the energy transition relies on the buildout of new energy infrastructure, and it was exciting to hear about new transmission projects that are trying to accelerate that step in the process. 

Derek Fry:  The speaker lineup was impressive, featuring a diverse range of experts from the energy and climate arena. My key takeaway is that irrespective of one’s profession or industry, every MBA role can contribute to climate solutions.

4.  What ideas relating to your career did ClimateCAP spark?

Dana Vazquez:  I loved the discussion on “First of a Kind” (FOAK) technologies and how to finance their scaling efforts through non-dilutive funds. We heard from some incredible experts in this space, including Tadeu Carneiro , CEO of Boston Metal, and Terry Grant , vice chairman at Marathon Capital. It felt encouraging to hear these experts talk about the importance of FOAK technologies and how we can move them forward. 

Nikki Beittenmiller:  The conference served as a timely illustration of how industry-agnostic climate change can be. While the specific business implications may differ from one company to the next, the lessons learned in one sector can provide inspiration and models for others. 

Derek Fry:  I found the breakout panel on clean energy supply chains particularly interesting. It provided valuable insights into the sustainability and lifecycle of mining operations and explained the supply-side resource availability of rare earth metals critical to the energy transition. Resource availability is often framed as a crisis, but the panel did an excellent job at cutting through the headlines by thoughtfully explaining fluctuations in the rare earth metal reserves/production ratios. 

5.  Aside from ClimateCAP, how else can Rice Business students engage with climate action and sustainability efforts?

Dana Vazquez:  Houston is an incredible space to explore topics around climate, cleantech, the energy transition and more. With great organizations like Greentown Labs , Center for Houston’s Future , and the Renewable Energy Alliance Houston , there’s plenty of opportunity to tap into our local community of best-in-class experts. I encourage everyone to get involved in local efforts however they can. 

Nikki Beittenmiller:  First and foremost, join the Rice Business Cleantech Association ! Not only does the club offer great resources for Rice MBA students interested in embarking on climate-oriented careers, but it’s also a close-knit community of students pursuing diverse projects and extra-curricular endeavors with a climate and sustainability angle.

Derek Fry:  Rice Business is also home to the Rice Cleantech Innovation Competition (RCIC), an annual student-run MBA case competition focused on decarbonization and clean technology investment. Finalists and event organizers have the unique opportunity to network with students from other top business schools and interact with professionals in the sector. The competition continues to attract teams from universities nationwide and generate increasing interest among sponsors. 

6.  How can ClimateCAP discussions be applied to entrepreneurship and business in Houston?

Dana Vazquez:  We have an incredible technical community here in Houston. With many FOAK technologies being developed in large organizations, in schools and throughout the broader community, we can and should support entrepreneurs trying to scale climate technologies that can solve important problems. 

Nikki Beittenmiller:  Houston is already showing the world how diverse stakeholders can come together to collaborate and innovate on solutions for some of the toughest climate problems. It is so exciting to see energy majors supporting and investing in cleantech startups coming out of places like Greentown Labs. To put ourselves on track to achieve our climate goals, we’ll need to continue supporting this kind of creative collaboration across the industry. 

Derek Fry:  I think these discussions are already underway in Houston. At ClimateCAP, I honestly felt that the Rice crew was far ahead of the average attendee on most topics related to energy and climate. Houston is the intellectual hub for virtually every segment of the energy industry and has a high concentration of energy know-how ranging from engineering to finance. I believe the talent pool in Houston offers a competitive advantage for both entrepreneurs launching startups and for existing businesses generating cash flow, especially for those businesses working at the intersection of energy, climate, and business.

Cost of first-class stamp to rise again to £1.35, says Royal Mail

The cost of first and second-class stamps is to go up again next month, after Royal Mail announced price rises of 10p a letter.

The fourth increase in two years will take the price of a first-class stamp to £1.35 and the cost of the second-class service to 85p and will come into effect on 2 April.

In March 2022, first-class stamps cost 85p and second-class stamps were 66p, but there has since been a run of increases, most recently in October .

Royal Mail said it had “sought to keep price increases as low as possible in the face of increasing cost pressures and wage increases, declining letter volumes and lack of reform of the universal service obligation (USO)”.

It said the number of letters sent had fallen from 20bn in 2004-05 to 7bn in 2022-23, while the number of addresses had risen by 4m.

The average UK adult now spends less than £7 a year on stamped letters and receives on average just two letters a week, it said.

The company, which was privatised in 2013 , has been lobbying for changes to the USO, which requires it to deliver letters to the UK’s 32m addresses six days a week.

The postal regulator, Ofcom, which is reviewing the rules, recently suggested Royal Mail could save up to £650m if it delivered letters three days a week, and £200m if it stopped Saturday deliveries.

However, unions indicated they would not support a switch to a three-day-a-week model.

Nick Landon, the chief commercial officer at Royal Mail, said: “We always consider price changes very carefully, but we face a situation where letter volumes have reduced dramatically over recent years, while costs have increased. It is no longer sustainable to maintain a network built for 20bn letters when we are now only delivering 7bn.

“As a result of letter volume decline, our posties now have to walk more than three times as far to deliver the same number of letters as before, increasing the delivery costs per letter.”

He added: “It is vital that the universal service adapts to reflect changing customer preferences so that we can protect the one-price-goes-anywhere service, now and in the future.”

Royal Mail said the new price of first- and second-class stamps remained below the average prices in Europe of £1.66 and £1.26 respectively.
