Change Invisalign Trays Every Week?

Dr. McPherson

change invisalign a day early

Invisalign is always innovating. New materials, new software algorithms, and support for many different digital impression systems are just a couple of the many changes they’ve made over the last couple of years.

None of those changes were nearly as exciting to me as a dentist (and to many of my patients) as when they announced in late 2016 that their aligners could be changed every week instead of every two weeks.

Yep, you read that right. Your treatment time can be halved . No other changes necessary. Just change the trays every week, with the one major stipulation that you MUST wear the trays for the required number of hours each day (a minimum of 20-22 hours a day with more being better). If you aren’t diligent about wearing them, weekly tray changes won’t work.

So how did this happen?

Most people who’ve gone through Invisalign are familiar with the standard rules… Wear your trays 20-22 hours a day and change to the next set every two weeks. In late 2016 Invisalign changed up those rules. They announced that after extensive testing they’d found that trays could be changed every week instead of every two. Individual dentists and orthodontists had been experimenting with this for a couple of years with great results but Invisalign didn’t want to put their rubber stamp on it until they were sure that it was safe and effective.  After collecting a lot of data, they found that it was in fact just as effective as the two week change period.

This change has been a result of the Invisalign innovation in materials and software that we talked about earlier. The aligners are made of a proprietary material that creates gentle but consistent force on the teeth. The attachments that are used on teeth are constantly being evaluated to make sure they are creating the most effective force on teeth. The software is continually getting better at predicting how teeth will move. This all adds up to extremely predictable tooth movement and in a shorter time than before.

The Most Important Things To Remember!

Changing once a week only works if you are extremely compliant with wearing your aligners. That means that you wear them for 22 hours a day, only taking them out to eat and brush. If you don’t wear your aligners as often as you should, you’ll have to stay on the two week schedule. Now that is some motivation to wear them consistently!

There are also a couple of products that I highly recommend using (especially if you’re doing 1 week trays changes) that will help make Invisalign treatment easier and more effective for you…

“ Chewies “

change invisalign a day early

Chewies look like a rolled up piece of gauze or cotton but are actually made of a sponge like plastic material. Many dentists and orthodontists recommend them during Invisalign treatment. When you put your trays in you’ll want to chew on them for 5-10 minutes. Invisalign recommends that you do this several times a day and especially before bed.

What this does is pushes the trays up against your teeth more tightly. The closer the fit on your teeth, the faster and more effectively they will move. This is especially important when you first change trays. You can’t get that same pressure using just your hands to pop them in place.

If you’re going to do 1 week tray changes, I highly recommend using chewies.

You can purchase chewies relatively inexpensively on Amazon. It doesn’t really matter what brand you get, as long as you get as long as they are literally “chewy”. Here is a link to the brand that I usually recommend… Orthoband Chewies .

You’ll want to throw away the chewy once it is all smashed up and not as spongy. There are re-usable until then (although you may want to clean them occasionally so they don’t get super dirty!).

Getting the Trays Off

Changing the trays once a week means that your trays will be tighter on your teeth much more of the time. For some people this isn’t a big problem and they don’t have any issues getting their trays on and off with their fingers. Most people can hook a fingernail around the backside of the tray and pop it off. For other people, especially those who have severely tilted teeth or a lot of “buttons” on their teeth, this can be really challenging! I’ve known some patients who would leave them on for two full days until their teeth moved enough to loosen them.

If you’re one of these people, there are some products out there that can help. None of them is perfect, but it is definitely better than not being able to get your trays off!

What I recommend is a  Metal crotchet hook . This is the cheapest and easiest solution for most people. You’ll hook the tip up and around the edge of your tray and pull down to pop it off on one side. Once you get one part off, the rest comes off pretty easy.

change invisalign a day early

There are some other products made specifically for getting the trays off but I’ve found that the metal crotchet hooks work better, are cheaper, and don’t break. The other products are made of plastic and tend to be a bit bulkier and can’t get in between the teeth and tray as well.

Is there any way for Invisalign to work even more quickly?

There are a couple of options that allow for tray changes even more quickly than every 7 days.

Acceledent – This is a FDA approved device that you wear for about 20 minutes a day and it can speed up your treatment 30-50%. You bite on the device and sends out “micropulses” into the bone, stimulating bone cells and allowing them to remodel around your teeth even more quickly than usual. You can typically only get this through an orthodontist who offers it.

Propel VPro5 – This is similar to the Acceledent device in creating small pulses to the bone that accelerate treatment.

Minor surgical procedure – For people who want the fastest treatment, there is a surgical protocol that creates minor trauma to the bone around the teeth. This can be used in combination with the Acceledent or Propel devices to further speed up treatment.

So what’s next for Invisalign?

I wouldn’t anticipate them being able to speed up tooth movement too much more with their aligners alone but I do see them continuing to make technology changes that allow Invisalign to treat more and more types of cases. As it stands now, the vast majority of cases can be treated successfully with Invisalign. Will Invisalign ever replace traditional braces completely? I really doubt it, mostly because some people need braces that are fixed in place and no compliance with wearing them is required (Here’s looking at you teenagers!). I do see it becoming a viable alternative for just about anyone who wants it treatment with Invisalign. I think your dentist saying “You’re not a good candidate for Invisalign” will become a thing of the past.

So now you know. If your dentist or orthodontist tells you that you can change your trays every week, it is actually recommended that you do so by Invisalign. If your dentist or orthodontist is still having you change your trays every two weeks ask them to look up the updated recommendations from Invisalign. They may not have heard about the change quite yet. You’ll be glad you did and they’ll probably thank you too!

What Happens if You Change Invisalign Trays Too Often?

change invisalign a day early

Despite this, some patients feel anxious to complete their treatment early and switch out their Invisalign trays as soon as they start to feel loose. Continue reading to learn why your treatment schedule has been set the way it has and why you shouldn’t switch the trays earlier than your provider recommends.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign trays have been molded or printed based on scans taken of your teeth, gums, and jaw. As you change them out, usually at a rate of one per 1-2 weeks, they will become closer to the shape your provider hopes will be permanent at the end of your treatment.

This means each subsequent aligner will be slightly tighter than the previous one. As it applies gradual pressure to your teeth, the ligaments that hold your teeth in place will loosen, allowing them to gradually shift to healthier positions.

After wearing your Invisalign trays for the allotted time, you will switch to a temporary or permanent retainer, which if worn as prescribed, will maintain your teeth in their new positions for the rest of your life.

How Long Do I Have to Wear Each Aligner?

Invisalign aligners should be worn for at least 20 hours per day. If not, your treatment will be prolonged or even reversed since too little time prevents your teeth from adjusting to their new positions. This means that you should wear your aligners while you sleep and during the day as much as possible, only removing them to eat and drink, play contact sports, or take a short break.

Each new aligner feels tight when you first wear it and gradually loosens during the 1-2 weeks prescribed. Many patients notice that the aligner feels loose on their teeth before this time is up, usually around the 7-10-day mark.

To accelerate their treatment, many patients are tempted to switch to their next retainer at this point, or even sooner.

Why You Should Not Replace Aligners too Early

In some cases, you can move to your next retainer a few days early with the permission of your orthodontist, who will advise you on your progress. After all, the treatment schedule cannot account for everything, such as the fact that the teeth of certain people (particularly younger patients) are more receptive to changes. Additionally, some patients are more consistent with their aligner schedule than others.

However, changing out the trays too early (such as at five days or sooner) and without the permission of your orthodontist can have serious consequences for your treatment. The new aligner will likely fit tighter than intended, which could damage your teeth, injure your gums, or warp your appliance.

The tray may feel loose sooner than the scheduled change, but that doesn’t mean it has finished that part of your treatment. Remember that Invisalign corrects not only the straightness of your teeth but also their alignment with your bite, which requires many subtle adjustments.

Patients commonly no longer feel the pressure of the appliance after a few days, but in nearly all cases, they should still stick to the prescribed treatment schedule. Contact your orthodontist if your appliance still hurts after a few days or feels very loose much sooner than expected. They may re-examine your progress and change your schedule.

The important thing is to consult them before making changes on your own. Altering your alignment and bite is a complicated process that can become dangerous to your health without the proper guidance. In most cases, your schedule has been set for a reason and provides the best guideline for your treatment progress.

  • What Happens If You Change The Invisalign Trays Too Soon?

woman wearing Invisalign

Invisalign has transformed orthodontic treatment by providing a discreet and straightforward alternative to conventional braces. Invisalign gently adjusts teeth into their ideal positions using a set of transparent, removable aligners, providing patients with a beautiful smile during the treatment. However, following the recommended treatment plan is essential for attaining optimal outcomes.

One common question arises: What happens if you change Invisalign trays too soon? Let’s delve into this topic and understand the importance of following the prescribed timeline.

About Invisalign Treatment

Getting Invisalign near you involves wearing a series of custom-made trays in sequential order, each tray designed to move the teeth progressively. The trays are normally replaced every one to two weeks, depending on the orthodontist’s recommendation. This scheduling allows the teeth to move gently into their new positions without causing excessive strain.

Risks of Changing Trays Too Soon

Inadequate tooth movement.

Invisalign trays are intended to shift teeth in small, precise increments. Changing trays too quickly may not allow a tooth to move into the correct position. It might cause uneven alignment, necessitating you to go back and re-wear specific trays.

Discomfort and Irritation

Wearing a new tray before your teeth are ready might cause irritation and pain. Teeth need time to adjust to the pressure of the aligners. Changing trays too soon might cause pain and even sore areas or ulcers in your mouth.

Extended Treatment Time

Attempting to speed through the treatment by changing trays too soon will prolong the overall time of the treatment. Your teeth require sufficient time to respond to the pressure of the aligner. If you exchange trays regularly before they have effectively shifted your teeth, you may wear aligners for longer.

Reduced Treatment Efficacy

The effectiveness of Invisalign in Country Hills is dependent on adhering to the recommended schedule. Changing trays too soon might reduce the overall effectiveness of the treatment. It might lead to less-than-ideal outcomes, necessitating more changes or a complete re-evaluation of your treatment plan.

Importance of Following Orthodontist’s Instructions

Personalized treatment plan.

Orthodontists cautiously design a treatment plan tailored to your dental requirements and objectives. Each pair of Invisalign trays is programmed to do particular tooth motions at specified times. Deviating from this schedule can disrupt the carefully planned sequence of tooth modifications, lengthening your treatment period or resulting in less effective outcomes.

Gradual and Controlled Movement

Invisalign trays function by applying regulated pressure to your teeth to guide them into the proper positions. The time range indicated for each tray ensures that this shift occurs gently and without unnecessary stress. Changing trays too quickly might put too much pressure on the teeth, causing discomfort and distress and damaging the roots.

Minimized Discomfort and Irritation

Even if the process is moderate, moving teeth might cause discomfort as oral tissues transform. Following the recommended schedule helps your mouth adjust to each new tray, minimizing the possibility of sore spots, ulcers, or other irritations caused by hasty tray changes.

Avoiding Reversal of Progress

Teeth tend to return to their previous positions if given more time to settle in new places. If you switch trays too quickly, the teeth may need more time to relax, resulting in potential regression and the need to use prior trays. It not only extends the treatment, but it can additionally reverse earlier progress.

Optimal Treatment Duration

Invisalign treatment is intended to deliver immediate and efficient outcomes. Following the orthodontist’s advice guarantees you get the most out of this contemporary orthodontic approach. Any alterations from the plan, such as changing trays too soon, could disrupt the delicate balance of the treatment, extending its duration.

Monitoring and Adjustments

Regular visits to your orthodontist are essential during your Invisalign experience. These check-ups enable our dentist in Country Hills to assess progress, make necessary modifications, and offer advice depending on how your teeth react. Deviating from the appropriate tray replacement schedule can make it difficult for the orthodontist to fine-tune your treatment.

When to Change Invisalign Trays?

To promote successful and safe tooth movement, the time for replacing Invisalign trays is an important component of the treatment. Following your orthodontist’s recommendations is essential since they’ve created a customized treatment plan tailored to your dental needs. However, as a general guideline:

Follow Your Orthodontist’s Instructions

Your orthodontist will recommend a schedule for updating your Invisalign trays. This timetable is based on the intended tooth motions and the time needed for each tray to complete those movements. To get the greatest results, adhere to this plan throughout the treatment.

Typically Every 1-2 Weeks

Invisalign trays usually get replaced every 1-2 weeks. Each new set of trays indicates a step forward in your teeth’s movement. Changing trays too frequently or infrequently might result in poor outcomes.

Signs of Readiness

During regular check-ups, your orthodontist will evaluate the progress of your treatment. When your teeth are ready for another movement stage, they may suggest you switch to the next set of trays. Before moving on to the next set of trays, your teeth should be quite at ease in this current set.

Gradual Changes

Invisalign trays are designed to progressively and softly shift your teeth into the ideal positions. Changing trays too rapidly might cause discomfort and distress and impair the treatment’s effectiveness. Always adhere to the schedule.

Aligner Number

The amount of aligners you receive varies according to the duration of your treatment. The number of aligners utilized, the longer the treatment is expected to last. Your orthodontist will advise you on the estimated treatment time and the tray replacement schedule.

Regular Check-ups

Regular appointments with your dentist near you are required to monitor your progress and make any necessary changes to your treatment plan. These appointments confirm that your teeth are reacting as predicted and that you are on the appropriate track.

Avoid Rushing

While you can be concerned about seeing results quickly, taking your time with the process is essential. Changing trays too fast may cause discomfort, irritation, and the need to reverse your treatment. Allow your teeth to move at a safe and effective speed, and trust the process.

Can I Change My Invisalign Early?

Invisalign

If you're part of the Invisalign club, you know it's a game of patience. Each clear aligner carries you one step closer to that perfect smile. But what if you're eager for quicker progress? You might wonder, "Can I change my Invisalign trays early to accelerate the process?"

It's a typical query, yet the answer isn't as simple as you may assume. Changing Invisalign trays early involves more than meets the eye and can impact your tooth movement. To help you, we'll explain the risks of changing trays early and how you can get the most out of your Invisalign treatment.

The Impulse to Change Trays Early

It's reasonable to want to see results from Invisalign as soon as possible. After all, you've invested considerably in your smile and want to enjoy it immediately. When changing trays early, you must realize what can happen if you switch too soon.

There are several common reasons why people get the urge to change trays early. Maybe you see that your treatment has progressed slowly, or you feel impatient and want faster results. Or perhaps you're struggling with minor discomfort associated with wearing the tray and feel like switching to new trays will be better.

While these are natural feelings, moving trays too early can have major consequences for your therapy. It's important to know how Invisalign works and why it's important to follow your orthodontist's schedule.

The Risks of Changing Invisalign Trays Early

When you receive your Invisalign trays, the orthodontist creates a schedule outlining how often to swap out your aligners. Every two weeks or so, on average. Though parts of this process might seem boring, there is a method to the madness.

Invisalign works by gently shifting your teeth in small increments over time. Each tray is designed to pressure each tooth and move it into place. If you switch aligners too soon, you will not receive the full benefit of the aligner. This can result in misalignment or crooked teeth once your therapy is completed.

Furthermore, advancing Invisalign trays too quickly can cause pain and discomfort. This is because there's not enough time for your teeth to adjust to the pressure of each aligner before moving to the next one.

The Importance of Following the Recommended Schedule

By following the recommended schedule, you are allowing your teeth to move and adjust in a gradual manner. This contributes to more accurate tooth alignment and less discomfort along the way.

Based on the severity of your misalignment, your dentist has scheduled a precise treatment time for you. This plan is personalized to your specific requirements and will assist you in attaining your desired final results.

It's natural to want to switch trays as soon as you get your new smile but resist the temptation. Stick to your designated timeline and enjoy the full effects of Invisalign treatment. Plus, it will save you from having to resort to a costly procedure down the line.

Get the Most Out of Your Invisalign Treatment

The good news is that you can still benefit from your Invisalign treatment without changing aligners too frequently. Here are a few pointers:

Follow Your Dentist’s Treatment Plan

Your dentist will create a comprehensive Invisalign program tailored specifically to your needs. This plan should always be followed for the best results, as switching aligners early can delay your journey to a straight smile.

Clean Your Aligners Often

Bacteria builds up over time with regular use of Invisalign trays, which can increase the risk of infection. To ensure your aligners stay clean and safe, brush and rinse them after each use.

Wear Your Trays For at Least 22 Hours a Day

Your aligner trays must be worn for at least 22 hours every day for Invisalign to be effective. This will speed up therapy while ensuring your teeth stay aligned properly.

Visit Your Dentist for Regular Check-Ups

A regular dental checkup is necessary to check your development and ensure that everything is proceeding as planned. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions regarding Invisalign or your smile at this time.

In the end, it's all about having a bit of patience. Changing your Invisalign early might seem like a faster route to that perfect smile, but remember, it's not a race.

It's a process meticulously planned by professionals who know their game. So, trust them, stick to the plan, and if any concerns pop up, your dentist is only a call away. Good luck!

How Often Will I Change Invisalign Trays?

Posted on May 11, 2022 by AllSmiles .

Clear aligner trays similar to Invisalign and ClearCorrect

How Often Will You Change Invisalign Trays?

You will change Invisalign trays every one to two weeks if you wear the trays twenty to twenty-two hours daily. Your dentist will give you sets of aligners to keep at home and have available when it is time to switch to the next pair. Most invisible braces require you to change to a new set every one to two weeks.

What Determines When You Change Invisalign Trays?

The time frame for changing Invisalign trays depends on your case, the complexity of tooth movement, and your diligence in wearing the aligners as directed.

  • Your patient case – No two patients’ cases are the same. Depending on the stage of your treatment plan, when you switch aligners may vary between one and two weeks.
  • Complexity of tooth movement – It takes longer for Invisalign and other clear aligners to achieve complex tooth movements than simple tooth movements. When movement is complete and your teeth are stable, your dentist may advise you to move to the next set of aligners sooner than two weeks.
  • Wearing the aligners – It takes twenty to twenty-two hours of daily wear to move your teeth as outlined in your treatment plan. If you do not wear the aligners as directed, it will delay switching to the next set.

What Are Invisalign Alternatives?

Today’s invisible braces offer several alternatives to Invisalign. A dentist or orthodontist may work with various braces or aligners and decide which to use for specific cases. Some dentists use Invisalign only. Others achieve beautiful results with Invisalign alternatives like ClearCorrect®.

Schedule a Consultation for Clear Braces

Regardless of which brand of aligners you choose, look for an experienced dentist with advanced occlusion and bite and clear aligner training.

Schedule a consultation and ask questions:

  • How many orthodontic cases have you completed from start to finish?
  • How many cases like mine have you managed?
  • How long have you used clear aligners for patients?
  • Which brand do you use and why?
  • May I see patients’ before and after photos?

Straightening your teeth with braces or clear aligners can be an exciting change. Take time to research your options and provider.

Why It’s So Important to Switch Aligners at the Right Time!

Spark Clear Aligners with a beach hat and sunglasses

Making the decision to pursue a happier smile is an amazing first step. If you’re choosing clear aligners to help straighten your teeth, however, you might have numerous questions about the process that you wish to address before getting started. For example, how are you supposed to know when to change aligners? How do you know if you’re changing aligners too soon? What else do you need to know before you begin the process? All of these are very valid questions and concerns that could have an impact on your experience.

To make sure that you maintain your peace of mind when you first establish an appointment with an aligner, let’s walk through some of the questions above!

How to Know When to Change Aligners:

Understanding the clear aligners process.

Concerns surrounding switching aligners early and dealing with consequences in treatment are extremely common. However, knowing how the clear aligners process works and what you will be doing throughout your treatment can serve to ease any anxiety you might be facing.

Every aligner treatment process begins with a visit to an orthodontist that offers your designed clear aligner system. They’ll conduct a 3D scan of your mouth and use this scan to create a comprehensive treatment plan, utilizing a certain number of trays to gradually shift your teeth into the desired position over time. 1

Most patients may be able to address their dental issues within 10 to 20 months, but every case is different. During that period, you will most likely have to change trays every one to three weeks. Having all of this information ahead of time can make you feel less stressed about accidentally changing aligners too soon. Should an issue arise throughout the process (teeth moving too fast or too slow), your orthodontist will address these with you. 1

So, should you be extremely concerned about making a mistake somewhere in the process? Absolutely not! The initial consultation and the continued check-ups provide you with the support you need to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your clear aligner system. As long as you’re following directions and not engaging in any habits that could affect your smile, you should be fine!

But what happens if you ignore directions? What if you should decide that you can determine how to know when to change aligners better than your orthodontist?

Woman changing Spark Clear Aligners

Why It’s Important to Switch Your Aligners on the Required Schedule.

Sometimes, it’s not a question of how to know when to change aligners. Some patients may feel as though things are going quickly or that it might be the right time to make the switch ahead of schedule. However, switching aligners early can have a major impact on the treatment process.

When you decide to switch trays before the recommended time frame offered by your orthodontist, you run the risk of continuing to straighten some teeth while others fall behind the rest. While this may not be visible when you switch to a new tray ahead of time, these errors will make themselves known when you put on trays in the future.

The result? You can push your treatment timeline further back than you initially anticipated, necessitating the creation of new trays to fix these issues (which means more time wearing aligners than you need to and greater costs as a consequence of switching too early). Make sure to address how to know when to change aligners and what happens when you don’t switch as requested by your orthodontist before you start your treatment. This will serve as a deterrent from trying to speed up the process on your own!

How Often Do I Need to Wear Them Daily?

So, you know that you need to wear your trays for a period of one to three weeks at a time. This is helpful in knowing when to change your aligners out for a completely new tray. However, there’s something else that you need to know ahead of time: how often you should be wearing your aligners daily.

The goal for those wearing aligners is to keep them on for at least 22 hours daily** (except when eating, drinking, or engaging in your oral care practices). Should you fail to wear them for the allotted time, you won’t have to worry about changing aligners too soon as your current ones may no longer properly fit.

The best way to make sure that you’re staying on schedule is to carefully plan your day around your meal schedule. Set aside some time to figure out how often you eat and how often you’ll spend caring for your teeth afterward. Although situations are bound to come up here and there that end up using more time than you anticipate, this can help you avoid missing your mark by hours and extending your treatment deadline.

Always make sure to follow your orthodontist’s instructions to get the best possible results and avoid any potential delays in your treatment!

Dental hygiene tips for healthy teeth & gums

Can I change my Invisalign every 5 days?

Invisalign should not be changed every 5 days because your teeth will not be able to shift properly during that period. According to the recommendations, Invisalign trays should be changed every two weeks, and it is not standard procedure to change them every seven days.

You must wear Invisalign for 20 hours every day for it to be beneficial. The trays should only be removed for dining and cleaning, and you’ll need to switch to a new tray every 1–2 weeks. Each set of aligners will aid in moving teeth into their proper positions

What Happens if you replace your Invisalign too soon?

If you skip an aligner or move on to a new aligner too soon, you risk “adaptation faults” at the aligner-tooth interaction. This simply implies that the aligner’s fit will be impaired, even if the aligner itself feels the same on the teeth.

Is Invisalign’s first tray the worst?

The great news is that once you become adjusted to the aligners moving your teeth, the discomfort you may experience during the first week usually fades. When you obtain a new set of aligners during treatment, you’re likely to experience some discomfort, although the first week is usually the toughest.

Do the Invisalign trays become tighter with time?

When you first put in a new set of aligners, you may notice that they feel snug or a little too tight, and it may be tough to get them into and out of your mouth. Please note that this is normal and there is no need to be concerned.

Is it possible for me to change my aligners slightly earlier?

After 7-10 days, some people discover that their trays are regularly loose. It’s acceptable to replace them sooner in some instances. However, you should only do so with your dentist or orthodontist’s permission and supervision. If you seek more guidance, make an appointment with your Orthodontist.

Can you finish invisalign early.

Home » Can You Finish Invisalign Early?

Here at Gladwell Orthodontics, many patients ask us whether they can finish their Invisalign treatment early. It’s important to understand that the length of time you will need Invisalign will depend on the complexity of your case and how often you wear your aligners.

Invisalign typically takes about a year for teenagers and up to two years for adults. If you are interested in Invisalign, Dr. Jason Gladwell will let you know how long an Invisalign treatment will take you during a complimentary Invisalign consultation.

Once you find out how long your specific Invisalign treatment will take, know that there are certain factors that can lengthen and shorten your treatment. If you fail to wear your aligners for at least twenty-two hours a day or refuse to wear them at school or work, your Invisalign treatment will likely take longer. In the event that you have a particularly complex tooth alignment or many teeth that need to be moved, you can expect a longer treatment time as well.

To ensure that your Invisalign treatment is as short as possible, you must adhere to Dr. Gladwell’s instructions to a tee. If he tells you to wear your aligners for at least twenty-two hours a day, be sure to do just that. In addition, you should take good care of your Invisalign aligners by brushing out food particles or plaque and notifying our office if one becomes cracked. Lastly, if you travel often for school at work, don’t forget to take your aligners with you.

Schedule a Complimentary Invisalign Consultation

If you’d like to find out whether you’re a good candidate for Invisalign and are wondering how long the treatment will take for you, don’t hesitate to call Gladwell Orthodontics today to schedule a complimentary Invisalign consultation. We can be reached at (919) 453-6325 and look forward to hearing from you.

2024 Daytona 500: Date, time, schedule, lineup, weather, qualifying, drivers, location, rumors, complete guide

The 66th running of 'the great american race' will take place monday afternoon due to rain sunday.

gettyimages-1467719075.jpg

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Just a short way away from the beach that became one of the major showcases of the power of the automobile, the Daytona International Speedway has served as one of the world's greatest and unmistakably American cathedrals of speed. And no race it holds all year is more unmistakably its own than the one that bears its very name.

After rain all day Sunday forced the race to be postponed , Monday afternoon marks the 66th running of the Daytona 500, the biggest prize in all of stock car racing and the season-opening race for the NASCAR Cup Series. The rainout Sunday marks the third time in race history it has been postponed to Monday, all of which have come since 2012. Matt Kenseth won the first-ever Daytona 500 run on a Monday evening in 2012, while Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag four years ago in the rain-delayed 2020 race.

It's a loaded field for the sport's most historic race. Joey Logano, who won this race in 2015, is in pole position to start the race as he looks to hold off last year's winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Plus, drivers like Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson look to add more hardware to their trophy cases from further back in the field. And defending Cup champion Ryan Blaney looks to get his year started the right way.

It's a busy weekend as the season kicks off with arguably the biggest race of the season. Be sure to stay up to date with all the happenings around Daytona Beach with our coverage of the race -- including the updated start time -- which you can catch up on below. Bookmark this page as it will be updated with the latest race info and news through the checkered flag on Sunday.

How voting in Michigan elections is about to change — again

Four years after Michigan saw a decided and sustained shift toward absentee voting by mail or drop box, election administrators and candidate campaigns are bracing for the impact of early in-person voting as a new way elections could be largely decided ahead of Election Day.

Voters wishing to cast a ballot in the Feb. 27 presidential primary can begin visiting early voting stations on Saturday. Early, in-person voting runs for nine days through Sunday, Feb. 25, and allows a voter to obtain a ballot, fill it out on-site and feed it into a vote-counting tabulator just like if it were Election Day.

The early voting option is available statewide for the first time since voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2022 that made a host of changes to voting rights and election procedures. It differs from traditional absentee voting in which a voter requests a ballot by mail and can mail it back to their municipal clerk or drop it in a secured dropbox outside City Hall or some other government building.

It's unclear what effect early, in-person voting will have on Michigan's voting patterns in the long run — whether it will pull from those already using absentee or those inclined to vote on Election Day — but clerks and campaigns are adjusting strategies, staffing and spending to accommodate the option.

"Where is it going to settle down the road? Hard to say," said Chris Thomas, the retired, longtime state elections director. "I doubt mail is going to fall back into the 30 percentiles.

"We’ll see how much early voting either gathers that (absentee) vote group or more people who vote on Election Day decide to do it early.”

For campaigns, the combination of absentee voting and early in-person options means deploying assets and base-voter messaging earlier while still keeping reserves on hand for independent or undecided voters waiting until Election Day to cast a ballot, said Jamie Roe, a Republican political consultant from Macomb County.

Historically, Democrats have fared better with mail-in absentee votes, while Republicans do better with voters who cast ballots on Election Day.

"We need to bank base votes early and then compete for the late deciders very effectively," Roe said of Republicans. "If we didn’t learn a message in 2022 of how that was done, then shame on us.

"What we can’t continue to do is howl at the moon against early and absentee voting," Roe added.

For city clerks, the people running the most local elections, the new option makes it feel like election season never ends.

Just a few months off the November elections, they’re working hard to recruit election workers, which is proving a unique challenge given additional rules now in place requiring time for people to vote early. It’s an effort that requires creativity. Clerks report they’re working with colleges and even high schools to ensure they have enough temporary staff.

“The difficulty is trying to figure out how many people we even need at this point,” said Kim Meltzer, clerk of Clinton Township.

Because early voting hasn’t existed like this in Michigan before, it’s hard to estimate how many people might take advantage of it. Especially in its first year, the number of early voters may be relatively low, but clerks still need to be ready.

Voting proposals shift behavior

To better understand the potential voting pattern shifts that could result from early in-person voting, officials are looking to a major shift that took place after voters enshrined the right to cast an absentee ballot without any excuse in a separate proposal in 2018.

Historically, in order to get an absentee ballot and vote by mail, a voter had to either be a senior citizen, have a disability that prevented them from going to the polls or was going to be out of town on Election Day. In many cases, voters would use the last excuse. The 2018 constitutional amendment allows for no-reason absentee voting.

The new option, which came into effect during the COVID pandemic, created an immediate spike in the number of people voting absentee. Whereas past elections saw, on average, about a quarter of Michigan's voters voting absentee, that number jumped in November 2020 to 57% of total votes cast, or about 3.2 million of the nearly 5.6 million ballots cast.

In November 2022, without the threat of the pandemic, absentee ballot use evened out to about 42%, or nearly 1.9 million of the 4.5 million votes cast, records show. During that election, Michigan voters passed with nearly 60% support Proposal 2, which added nine days of early voting to the state constitution, created an option for individuals to be added to a permanent absentee ballot list and allowed clerks to pre-process absentee ballots ahead of Election Day.

Early voting works much the same way regular voting does: People show up to a designated location, receive their ballot from a poll worker and fill it out.

They then cast their ballot as they normally would. This is different than absentee voting, which has voters fill out their ballots at home and drop them in the mail or return them directly to a clerk's office.

Absentee voting is still available — early voting is simply an expansion of the options available to voters, and it will be available for every statewide and federal race.

Not every polling place is an early voting location, but voters can look up their early locations on the Secretary of State's website .

In several states that allow for early, in-person voting, voting trends broadly fall into a three-way split, with about a third of voters voting absentee, a third voting early and in-person and a third voting on Election Day, said Thomas, the former state elections director. Other states vary. Georgia, for example, sees about 60% of voters participating in early, in-person voting.

In Michigan, it's unlikely early, in-person voting will see an immediate uptick, Thomas said. "I think this will take some time to grow," he said.

Roe said Republicans would benefit by promoting early, in-person voting, arguing it was a better route than absentee because mistakes could be realized and fixed immediately. But the trend toward early voting also changes the way campaigns are run, requiring more spending earlier in the election cycle.

"It definitely has an impact on your campaign budget, when you have to have resources available and how you deploy those resources to make sure you’re reaching people before they’re voting," Roe said.

Staffing a challenge

However, getting election workers in place may prove challenging in some municipalities across Michigan.

More than six dozen local clerks around the state sent a letter to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in January asking for assistance meeting the requirements put into place by the new law, which forces clerks to both call and email those with permanent mail ballots that they must choose a party affiliation to vote in this month's primary.

In the letter, the clerks noted that their offices have less than 10 employees, often closer to two to four. To run an election, especially in larger cities, it can take hundreds of people.

In Clinton Township and Sterling Heights, clerks both said they were relying on the Macomb County Clerk’s office to help supplement a few additional workers.

Sterling Heights Clerk Melanie Ryska said that her goal is to nearly overstaff polling locations on Election Day, in part to increase the number of people able to answer questions voters may have about the process.

“We really have to combat some of the mis- and disinformation,” Ryska said. “Any time we can get out in the community, raise interest in the process and encourage people to come work with us, it’s part of a consistent multi-faceted effort we’re going to have all through 2024.”

In Dearborn, Clerk George Darany said his team has been trying to carefully toe a line of paying people enough that poll workers — more than 300 people to work on Election Day itself in the city — want to sign up, but not so much that it burns through the entire elections budget.

In many cities, it's difficult to find someone who can work all nine days of early voting plus Election Day, meaning additional people need to be trained and specific schedules need to be developed.

“It costs $125,000 extra every time we do early voting, which is required in all state and federal elections,” Darany said. “It’s a nice chunk of change.”

Clerks aren’t just facing new rules, though. In large part, they’re still fighting battles from years past.

Tensions in 2020 reached a high point as unsubstantiated claims about the validity of the presidential election made national headlines in Michigan. In Detroit, groups tried to disrupt ballot counting after then-President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit in the state saying that observers weren't allowed to watch.

“2020 was not fun,” Darany said.

Election workers were criticized and questioned unfairly, even as they did things completely by the book, Darany said. A notable number of longtime election workers said they wouldn’t come back.

“It got to be too much for people, especially elderly people who weren’t doing it for the money but were instead just doing it for their civic duty,” Darany said. “When tensions flare like it did, it definitely has a negative effect on workers.”

In Dearborn, the clerk’s office works with the police department to ensure that election workers know that if trouble arises, someone is on call to help diffuse issues. Relying on the police department has been beneficial, he said.

One bright spot, Darany said, is that many poll workers are still coming back year after year to help make sure votes are counted quickly and accurately. More than 50,000 city residents will vote in November, he estimated. This year, Michigan residents vote not only for president but also for a new senator and in state races.

“We’re certainly anticipating some excitement this year, but we’ll be prepared for it,” Darany said.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in the race to replace George Santos

WASHINGTON (AP) — The epilogue to Republican George Santos’ short and tumultuous congressional career will be written Tuesday as voters in New York’s third congressional district decide who will complete the remaining 11 months of his unfinished term.

In December, Santos became only the sixth U.S. Representative to be expelled from the chamber by his colleagues after a blistering report from the House Ethics Committee found “overwhelming evidence” that he had broken the law on multiple occasions and exploited his office for personal enrichment.

Vying to replace him are former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi , the Democratic nominee, and Nassau County legislator Mazi Pilip , the nominee for both the Republican and Conservative parties.

Suozzi represented a version of this Long Island-area district in Congress for six years but gave up the seat after an unsuccessful run for governor in 2022. He has held other elected office on Long Island dating back to the mid-1990s, first as mayor of Glen Cove and later as Nassau County executive.

Pilip is an Ethiopian-born veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces, where she served as a gunsmith in a paratrooper unit. In 2021, she was elected to the Nassau County legislature. Although elected on the Republican and Conservative party lines, public records indicate she remains a registered Democrat. On the campaign trail, she has declined to say whether she voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.

Santos says he doesn’t plan to vote in the special election.

The current incarnation of the third congressional district was created about a year and a half ago, but it has been a key focal point in an ongoing battle of wills being waged across the country between Democrats and Republicans over redistricting and, ultimately, control of the U.S. House.

In 2022, a New York court rejected a map drawn by Democratic lawmakers , saying that it had been unconstitutionally gerrymandered. That plan was replaced with a much more Republican-friendly map that created the current District 3 and played a key role in the election of Santos and other New York Republicans whose victories helped Republicans reclaim control of the U.S. House. But District 3 in its current form will cease to exist early next year after New York’s highest court ordered yet another congressional map to be drawn for this year’s elections.

Republicans hold a narrow majority in the U.S. House, 219-212, with four vacancies.

Here’s a look at what to expect on election night:

SPECIAL ELECTION DAY

The special election in New York’s third congressional district will be held Tuesday. Polls close at 9 p.m. ET.

WHAT’S ON THE BALLOT

The Associated Press will provide coverage for one contest in New York on Tuesday: the special election in the third congressional district. The candidates on the ballot are Suozzi and Pilip. Pilip’s name appears on the ballot twice under both the Republican and Conservative party lines.

WHO GETS TO VOTE

Any voter registered in New York’s third congressional district may participate in this special election.

DECISION NOTES

Under its current boundaries, District 3 has a larger share of both Republicans and independents than the rest of the state. More than 28% of District 3 voters are Republicans, compared to 22% statewide. The share of independents in the district is 28%, compared to 24% statewide. And while more District 3 voters are registered as Democrats than in any other category, they make up only 39% in the district, compared to 49% statewide.

These numbers have helped Republicans find success at the ballot box in District 3. Although voters in the district preferred Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden over Donald Trump by five- and eight-point margins in the last two presidential elections, Santos beat his 2022 Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman, by almost eight percentage points. By comparison, Santos lost his first bid for Congress in 2020 against Suozzi by almost 13 points under the old district lines.

Lee Zeldin, the 2022 GOP nominee for governor, carried District 3 by a 12-point margin in his unsuccessful bid against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The GOP advantage is clearer in the part of the district that falls in Nassau County, which contributed 82% of the district’s total vote in 2022. Both Santos and Zeldin received a higher share of the vote and had bigger vote margins in Nassau County than they did districtwide. The part of the district located in Queens is more competitive, but it makes up a much smaller share of the overall vote. Santos lost in Queens by four percentage points, while Zeldin narrowly outperformed Hochul by a margin of nearly two and a half percentage points.

On Tuesday, the shortest, most direct path to victory would be to win in Nassau County. The bigger the win in Nassau, the harder it is for the trailing candidate to pull out a win. Suozzi would likely need to win by a substantial margin in Queens to make up for even a modest lead by Pilip in Nassau.

The AP does not make projections and will declare a winner only when it’s determined there is no scenario that would allow the trailing candidates to close the gap. If a race has not been called, the AP will continue to cover any newsworthy developments, such as candidate concessions or declarations of victory. In doing so, the AP will make clear that it has not yet declared a winner and explain why.

An automatic recount will be triggered if the vote margin is equal to or less than 0.5 percentage points. The AP may declare a winner in a race that is eligible for a recount if it can determine the lead is too large for a recount or legal challenge to change the outcome.

WHAT DO TURNOUT AND ADVANCE VOTE LOOK LIKE

As of Nov. 1, 2023, there were nearly 571,000 voters registered in District 3.

A detailed breakdown of the amount of pre-Election Day votes cast in the district in the 2022 general election is not available, but in the gubernatorial race that year, about 29% of the vote in all of Nassau and Queens was cast before Election Day.

Early voting began Feb. 3 and concludes on Sunday.

HOW LONG DOES VOTE COUNTING USUALLY TAKE

In the 2022 general election, the AP first reported results in the district at about 9:02 p.m. ET, or about two minutes after polls closed. The election night tabulation ended at 1:34 a.m. ET with about 94% of total votes counted.

Researcher Rhonda Shafner in New York contributed to this report.

A previous version of this story stated that Pilip was a former paratrooper. This has been updated to clarify that Pilip served in a paratrooper unit, but as a gunsmith and not as a parachutist.

New in-person early voting starting this weekend in Michigan

Voters approved new voting opportunity in 2022.

A significant change to how we all vote in Michigan begins Saturday morning. No longer is it a choice between voting absentee and voting on election day.

Saturday (Feb. 17) morning, Michigan begins nine days of early voting before election day.

Metro Detroit clerks have been preparing for this for months, and now you can cast your vote in person. However, votes will not be counted until election day.

Voters approved this in 2022, but it will be the first time we see it in action in Michigan.

The voting process will run for nine days.

The idea behind early voting is to ease long lines and snafus of in-person voting on election day, but unlike election day, you’re not going to see all the polling places you see on election day up and running.

Instead, each community will choose its early voting sites.

For example, in one township, there will be two; if voting early is something you are interested in, it is best to check out your local clerk’s page and see what they’ve designated as early voting locations.

“A voter comes in, gets their ballot, marks their ballot, and enters their ballot into the tabulator, and those ballots will be counted on election day,” said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

So now, all of us have three options for voting—absentee, early in-person voting, and voting on election day.

The difference is whether you go to your designated polling place on election day or whether you go to one of the dedicated early voting spots your community clerk has chosen. It starts on the 17th and will run through the 25th.

The primary election day is Feb. 27, which will continue as always.

The Michigan Secretary of State did a Zoom briefing Thursday to review details, but local clerks have been preparing for this for months.

The reality is we have been able to do early voting for years. Some people usually like to vote in person on election day to gauge what it feels like out there and to see how busy it is.

Still, this new path to cast your vote is an option for those who know ahead of time that their workday will be hectic.

We always had the option of going to our local clerk’s office ahead of time and asking for our ballot and voting.

All this does is expand that process and make it theoretically easier.
