What Is Health Insurance for Owner-Operators?
Health insurance for owner-operators should cover either part or all of your medical costs. This is separate from truck insurance , which you might also need. Whether you have a serious illness or you are simply in need of a routine examination, your health insurance should contribute to either a portion of or all of your medical costs.
As an independent contractor, you can seek a health insurance plan that offers individual or family coverage through the marketplace, a private insurer or a trade association. Since you are self-employed, you can claim a 100% deduction of your health insurance premiums.
If you have one or more employees who work for you, it might be possible for you to qualify for a small group coverage policy. The premiums you’ll pay for health insurance on behalf of your employees will be fully deductible. As an owner-operator, you are running your own small business, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) defines a small business as a group of 50 or fewer full-time employees.
That said, you are not required to offer health insurance to your employees. However, it is always a good idea, and you could qualify for a Health Care Tax credit if you do.
How Does Health Insurance for Owner-Operators Work?
When you sign up for a health insurance plan, you must pay your monthly premiums on time to keep your policy in effect. If you are late, your health coverage may be canceled.
In addition to monthly premiums, there are other out-of-pocket expenses an owner-operator may incur.
Deductibles
Most policies include a deductible, which is an amount of money that you must pay before your health coverage kicks in. You should consider how much you have budgeted to pay for your health insurance before you pick a plan. Your deductible will affect your monthly premium.
If you have a lower deductible, your coverage will start sooner. So, your premiums will be higher. But when you have a high deductible plan, you will pay more money out of pocket before you are covered. Your monthly premiums will be lower as a result.
Once you have reached your deductible, you may be responsible for a copayment when you visit a doctor or fill a prescription. Often referred to as a copay, this is a set amount that you’ll pay for medical care, but it can vary based on the service. For example, your copayment may be $10 to fill a prescription but $20 to see a doctor.
Coinsurance
The percentage of the total costs that you’ll have to pay after reaching your deductible is called coinsurance. Your health insurance company will pay the difference. So, if you have an 80/20 policy, your insurance company will 80% while you’ll have to pay 20% of the cost incurred after you reach your deductible.
Most of the time, you won’t have to worry about filing a claim. Most doctors, hospitals and pharmacies will file electronic claims directly with insurance companies. Health insurance is a significant expense, so when you run a small business, you should always shop around for the best coverage and prices for health insurance.
If you are an independent contractor or you run a business with only a few employees, health insurance premiums are fully deducted. Also, if you decide to join a private health care insurance company and enroll your employees in the plan, you will be responsible for paying part of their monthly premiums.
Your employees will have to cover any services and copayments that are not covered by their health insurance plans. There are plenty of choices to choose from when it comes to health coverage so take your time and search for a plan that suits your budget. Higher insurance tiers will offer more extensive coverage, but they also cost more.
What To Consider With Health Insurance for Owner-Operators
When choosing health insurance for owner-operators, consider the following factors.
Business or Personal Coverage
If you do not have any employees, you can use the Individual Health Insurance Marketplace to find the type of insurance that offers you the healthcare coverage you need, all while meeting your financial requirements as well. As soon as you start to employ people, you can find affordable business coverage in the SHOP Marketplace For Small Businesses .
Availability in Your State
If you travel across state lines, you must have healthcare insurance that covers every state within your itinerary. If you don’t, you may find yourself without coverage in certain states, which can be risky.
Contributing to Employee Plans
Many businesses make health insurance contributions for their employees because perks like health insurance can help to attract and then retain employees. The cost will depend on the type of coverage that you opt for, and the higher the premium, the lower the deductibles.
Open Enrollment
Every year, there is a window of time during which you can change or cancel your health insurance plan. This period of time only lasts for a few weeks, so it’s important to make good use of the open enrollment as you consider your options.
Business Liability Insurance or Workers’ Comp
When you or one of your employees needs medical care, you’ll need to ensure that there are no other types of insurance other than health insurance that cover the claim. If you have Workman’s Compensation, for example, and an employee is injured while working, then the claim should be against Workman’s Compensation, not health insurance.
Take Advantage of Favorable Health Coverage Options
As a truck owner and operator, you have plenty of responsibilities, not least of which is insurance. For example, you will have to secure fleet insurance that is tailored to the particular needs of your company.
Another crucial issue is health insurance for you, your family and your employees. Fortunately, there are a number of large, reliable companies that offer health insurance for owner-operators. Be sure to do your homework and find the health insurance provider that best meets your needs.
Many truckers receive benefits, including paid time off, health coverage and even retirement benefits.
Under Obamacare, only small businesses are exempt from offering health insurance to their employees. The laws that require businesses to offer healthcare insurance to their employees will increase the costs for larger employers. Smaller owner-operators who want to compete in the job market may have to offer health insurance for truckers.
Truck drivers typically receive life insurance coverage from insurance providers for a fixed amount of time until the policy expires. Depending on your preference, the length of the coverage may be between 5 to 30 years.

A Truck Show That Covered Trcukers Health Insurance Policies
The Mid America Truck Show in Louisville KY was almost too much to take in. I came on with a truck driver’s health insurance plan with HTA two years ago about health concerns. COVID running rampant a number of trade shows were canceled. This was my first Trucking trade show, and I was overwhelmed to see all the healthy male and female drivers. They represent multiple ethnicities descending on the city. I couldn’t help thinking if my Amazon order was somewhere in the parking lot.
Truck Driver Health Insurance Policies
Little to no health insurance amongst owner-operators was a steady topic. What can I get, and where do I get it? A quick search on the internet confirms what we tell drivers. Go to an excellent article written by CDL.com to learn more about Health Insurance For Drivers but the long and short of it is:
- Affordable Care Act (ACA) For new truck drivers, a plan through an exchange might be a good option for health insurance.
- Health Savings Account (HSA) Truckers who are healthy but want more control over their health insurance benefits should consider a Health Savings Account. The HSA is used in conjunction with a high-deductible health insurance policy.
- Owner-Operator Independent Health Insurance (OOIDA) OOIDA is a great choice for truckers. For a small yearly fee, you can become a member of OOIDA and enroll in their Medical Benefits Group. This will not only provides healthcare and life insurance coverage for truckers but their family too.

Driving Over The Road
There are over 2 million truck drivers in the United States. ( 1 ) The physical demands are well known. Long hours of sitting lead to chronic pain and back injuries. Staying focused and alert while driving roads and highways can lead to poor sleeping habits.
The Affordable Care Act Individual Mandate
3 ways truckers get health insurance, 1. enroll in qualified health plans certified by the health insurance marketplace during open enrollment periods.
The federal government creates an “open enrollment period” where you may change your major medical health insurance without a qualifying event (such as getting new employer-sponsored health with a new job). This is when O/Os may drop their current insurance and find new major medical policies. The certified health plans offered on private marketplaces are required to provide essential health benefits, cover pre-existing conditions and has limits on deductibles, copayments and out-of-pocket maximum amounts. These are policies that are similar to employer-sponsored insurance.
2. You Can Enroll Anytime For Short-Term Medical Policies
3. check if you can receive medicaid or the children’s health insurance program.
If you are 65 years old and not receiving social security, you may have to sign up for Medicare. ( 3 ) If you are not nearing retirement age, you may qualify for assistance through the federal Medicare program or Children’s Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP.
Medicaid eligibility is determined based on your income from being a truck driver. Medicare is also available for the elderly, pregnant women and adults and children with disabilities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Many trucker insurance websites mention med-share programs. are these a scam.
Med-Share programs are Faith-based insurance cost sharing groups. Your monthly payment goes into an escrow account for all members. You request reimbursement for medical expenses. If you are looking for a PPO plan through Med Cost Sharing program, you will need to wait for open enrollment. It’s important for you to know that these are not federal Healthcare Marketplace approved plans.

Health Insurance for Truck Drivers
Trucking is classified as a high-risk profession per The Bureau of Labor Statistics It is one of the most dangerous jobs because the combination of long hours and sleep deprivation increases the chances of accidents. An estimated 70% of truck drivers have at least one grave health condition.
Many independent operators are forced to purchase their individual or family policies. Unfortunately, they are not able to afford the premiums to obtain the proper amount of insurance they need most of the time. Luckily, there are other options truck drivers have for health insurance. Let’s take a look at them.
Your Health Insurance Options as a Truck Driver
- Through the government marketplace during open enrollment or via a special enrollment period due to a qualifying life event outside of open enrollment
- Through a short term medical plan
- Through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
- Through a government-compliant medsharing plan.
Note that you can also purchase supplemental insurance such as dental, vision, critical illness, or accident policies at any time.
Now, two of those options listed above would be based on your income level. Given that the average salary for a truck driver right now is $43,464 a year per Glassdoor.com, that eliminates Medicaid and most of the benefits through the government marketplace plans assuming you had a qualifying life event (marriage, childbirth, etc.) since they do not give any subsidies for individuals that make over $48,240.
So that means even if you have a qualifying life event and make less than $48,240 a year, you still won’t get much assistance from the government unless you make less than $30,150 which qualifies you for a subsidy plus cost-sharing. Between the other two options left, short-term medical plans and medsharing plans, the medsharing plans are the only ones that are government compliant which would exempt you from the tax penalty for not having insurance.
Once you understand your options as a truck driver, the choice for which plan is best for you becomes pretty obvious in most cases, a medsharing plan. This is especially true if you make more than $48,240 per year, which means the best value plans you have to choose from inside of open enrollment are very similar to your choices outside of open enrollment because you make too much to qualify for a government subsidy.
There’s no sense in waiting until open enrollment. Let’s talk more about what these medsharing plans offer.
Medsharing – The Best Insurance For Truck Drivers
These plans operate very similar to traditional health insurance except the premiums are put into an escrow account and claims are paid less than the Members Shared Responsibility Amount. Preventative care, doctor visits, prescription discounts, and more are all included in medhsaring plans.
Some of the benefits of Medsharing plans are:
- They can be purchased year-round.
- They are government compliant but not affiliated with the government at all, which means they exempt you from the tax penalty and it keeps the government out of your business.
- Guaranteed Issue
- PPO Network
- Monthly premiums are much lower (usually about half the price of government ACA plans) because of the way they structure their plans
- Your price is based on your age bracket, so you can have peace of mind that your health insurance premium will stay the same until you reach the next age bracket
- Your monthly payments go towards helping other members as opposed to corporate higher-ups
- When negotiating your bills they have leverage due to the cash they bring to the table as well as tax benefits from being a non-profit organization

- Health Insurance Benefits for Truck Drivers
- Safe Drivers of the Month
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has classified Trucking as a high-risk profession. Trucker’s health is at risk because of smoking, sitting for a long period of time, back problems and of course accidents risks due to fatigue and long hours behind the wheel. An estimated 70% of truck drivers have at least one grave health condition. Unfortunately, not all of the owner-operators can afford their individual or family policies. Some trucking companies offer healthcare coverage for their employees. However, these heakth insurance benefits are not always offered by the leasing company to self-employed people.
Do Truck Drivers Get Health Insurance?
As we already mentioned, truckers have a unique set of health risks having in mind how risky their job is. Therefore there is no reason why they should be denied affordable health insurance plans. But before you choose an insurance company, make sure health insurance is included in the bundle package. A lot of those companies provide a wide variety of insurance options, but the one you need isn’t part of them. It’s also important to note that dental, vision, critical illness, or accident insurance aren’t typically covered by health insurance plans. However, you can get coverage for things like these through supplemental insurance.
What is Truck Drivers Health Insurance?
For quite a while, truck drivers have been paying high insurance premiums and coverage that didn’t really meet the needs of the insured. All of that happened because their needs have been ignored by the insurance industry. But that was in the past. Now the truckers have a lot more coverage alternatives than they’ve ever had before.
What Are the Health Insurance Options For Owner Operators?
There are a couple of various kinds of healthcare alternatives for truckers, and although you may feel like you are healthy, the dangers that accompany truck driving can be unexpected. That’s why you better invest in at least one coverage option.
- Health Savings Account (HSA)- People that are in good health are very likely to choose this option. However, if you are looking for lower deductibles you better look into other plan options. You pay less per month for coverage but you have a higher deductible. However, there is an additional advantage. The money you add to your Health Savings Account cannot be taxed by the government.
- Owner-Operator Independent Driver’s Association ( OOIDA)- this organization stands up for professional truck driver’s rights. To become a member you need to pay a small yearly fee. This provides you with lots of benefits, including healthcare. These benefits can extend to your family, and there are many options for coverage providing high amounts of flexibility and a variety of other types of insurance through OOIDA.
- The NRA and Insurance – Similar to OOIDA, NRA offers access to healthcare coverage for its members. While this is validated healthcare, the policies offered might not be similar or comparable to full healthcare insurance. Health Insurance For Truck Drivers
Suppose you’re already a certified trucker or considering a career as a truck driver. In that case, it’s important to weigh the benefits available if you choose trucking as your career. This includes taking a closer look at the potential salary and other perks, such as truck driver health insurance coverage. Although some companies may offer their employees the opportunity to join the company’s health insurance, policies can vary, and some companies don’t. Fortunately, truck drivers have several options when it comes to health insurance. The type of plan can often depend on how long the driver has been qualified, their salary, and what they can afford according to their unique requirements.
Why do truck drivers need health insurance?
Working in logistics services, your health is vital to doing your job. If you become sick or injured, this could result in downtime as you may not drive for a certain period. While many companies offer sick pay, not having health insurance could risk a loss of income in the long term. This is why truck drivers should consider the types of plans available to protect their future finances. If you have the right health insurance plan, that will go a long way towards ensuring that you get the affordable medical care you need quickly so you can get back on the road as soon as possible. There are several types of health insurance for truck drivers.
Truck insurance for new CDL drivers
One of the best options for truck driver insurance for new CDL drivers is the Affordable Care Act (ACA) . This is more suitable for more recent drivers on an entry-level salary because one of the conditions is that you need to earn below a certain threshold. This income threshold changes each year, but experienced truck drivers who earn upwards of $50,000 a year may not qualify. This is because the main aim of the ACA is providing healthcare to those who may not normally be able to afford it.
Medsharing plans
Another option both new and experienced truck drivers have is government-compliant medsharing plans. These operate similarly to traditional plans, with the difference being that premiums are put into an escrow account, but they are typically much lower than ACA plans. Claims are paid after the deduction of a set Members Shared Responsibility Amount.
Short-term health insurance plans
If you’re between jobs or unable to afford ACA insurance premiums, a short-term health insurance plan may be a suitable solution. The truck driver health insurance coverage offered by short-term plans will vary according to the state you live in. The purpose of these plans is to fill a gap, which can be very useful, but it’s important to shop around and find the provider that offers the coverage you need with minimal limitations. Here is a quick guide to short-term health insurance providers with more details.
Health Savings Account (HSA)
A Health Savings Account (HSA) may be a good choice for truckers without current health issues. It’s a way to save money for future medical care for yourself or your family. Another benefit is that it gives truck drivers more control over their health insurance. You should consider an HSA as more of an investment as your money works harder in this type of account, and your contributions go in before taxes. It also works in conjunction with a high-deductible health insurance policy.
Owner-operator Independent Health Insurance (OOIDA)
Truckers also have the option to become members of Owner-operator Independent Health Insurance (OOIDA) . By becoming a member, you will be entitled to healthcare and life insurance for you and your family. There are several benefits of OOIDA health insurance. The medical benefits group offers different types of plans so that OOIDA health insurance costs can vary. There are, however, many discounts and rebates offered by their service providers, which will help to bring down OOIDA insurance payments.
National Truckers Insurance Company (NITIC)
Another organization truckers can join is the National Independent Truckers Insurance Company (NITIC). They provide health insurance plans specifically designed for truck drivers. These can include protection in the case of damage or injuries caused by trucking accidents. Deductibles can vary according to location, your driving record, and the location of your company. If you’d like to learn more about the NITIC and customer experiences, try reading some (NITIC) truck insurance reviews .
Disability insurance
One final type of truck driver health insurance worth considering is disability insurance. This can be available as a short-term or long-term plan if you’re unable to work due to disability. Truckers are out on the road all day, and there is a risk of accidents. If you were injured while driving that left you out of work for a while or on a long-term basis, disability insurance could help to support you and your family during the recovery process. For this reason, it’s especially advisable to consider disability insurance if you’re working in logistics services.
How to choose a company with the best benefits for truck drivers
If you’re looking for work as a truck driver, you may find that some employers will offer health insurance or some coverage. The important thing is to be mindful and determine precisely what is covered and how the insurance plan works. It could also be worth considering a higher salary, other perks, and looking into different types of insurance plans. If you’re not sure which health insurance plan to choose as a truck driver, seek professional advice from a logistics company that can provide support.

Health Insurance Options for Owner-Operator Truck Drivers
As an owner-operator truck driver, your health is the most important thing when it comes to doing your job. If you become sick or injured, this could result in extended downtime as you may not be able to drive. While many company drivers are offered sick pay, owner-operators do not have this luxury. On top of this, not having health insurance could lead to additional costs in the long term.
This is why truck drivers should consider the types of health insurance plans available to protect their future finances. If you have the right health insurance plan, it will go a long way toward ensuring that you get the affordable medical care you need quickly so you can get back on the road as soon as possible.
Health Insurance Expenses
As an independent contractor, you can seek a health insurance plan that offers individual or family coverage through the marketplace, a private insurer, or a trade association. When you sign up for a health insurance plan, you must pay your monthly premiums on time to keep your policy in effect. If you are late, your health coverage may be canceled. However, since you are self-employed, you can claim a 100% deduction of your health insurance premiums if your employed spouse doesn’t have access to company-offered insurance.
Deductibles
In general, the deductible refers to the amount of money an individual will be responsible to pay before significant health insurance benefits kick in. In general, the higher the deductible is the lower the monthly premium costs will be.
Tax Tip - Use a health savings account (HSA) in combination with a high deductible health plan (HDHP) to save money tax-free. Grow the HSA balance by contributing frequently at hold a balance of at least your deductible. Think of this as a health escrow similar to your maintenance escrow. The HSA funds can be used to pay your deductible and other health-related costs.
Bonus Tip - For 2022, the maximum contribution amounts are $3,650 for individuals and $7,300 for family coverage. If you're 55 or older, you can add up to $1,000 more as a "catch-up" contribution. HSAs have no use-it-or-lose-it provision. Any funds still in the plan at the end of the year can be rolled over indefinitely. People that are in good health may be more likely to choose this option.
In general, individuals are responsible for paying for a portion of their health costs such as doctor visits or purchasing prescriptions. The amount paid by the individual will depend on the health insurance plan you choose.
Coinsurance
This is the percentage of the medical costs that you’ll have to pay after reaching your deductible and before reaching the max out-of-pocket amount. For example, if your plan offers an 80/20 policy, your insurance company will 80% while you’ll have to pay 20% of the cost incurred after you reach your deductible.
Max out-of-pocket
This is the total cost for an individual or family for medical costs. When medical costs, during the year, exceed the plan’s maximum out-of-pocket cost, the medical excess costs are covered by the insurance company.
Insurance Options
Federal or state marketplace.
One option truck drivers have for health insurance is an individual or family plan through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). You can get these plans through government exchanges or through brokers.
The federal government creates an “open enrollment period” where you may enroll for the first time or change your health insurance without a qualifying event. The open enrollment period typically runs from November 1st through December 15th each year. In most states, health insurance plans start on January 1st of the following year. These health plans are required to provide essential health benefits, cover pre-existing conditions, and have limits on deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket maximum amounts. These are policies that are similar to employer-sponsored insurance.
It’s important to note that health insurance plans are typically available by the state and zip code in which you live. This is important to consider when dealing with health insurance as a truck driver because you’re constantly traveling. Some truckers travel over state lines which means their health insurance may not cover them if they need healthcare while on the road.
You should also know that, depending on your income, you can get a subsidy to help afford your monthly health insurance premiums. When you apply for health insurance through the federal or state marketplace or exchange, you need to estimate your family income for the year. If your income is below a certain amount, you may be eligible to receive a subsidy to help you pay your monthly insurance premiums.
At the end of the year, you need to calculate how much your household income actually turned out to be. If your income is above the amount you estimated, you may have to pay back some or all of the subsidized assistance you received back to the marketplace as part of your tax liability. These subsidies had been set to expire in 2023 but the Inflation Reduction Act has extended these subsidies through the end of 2025.
Short-Term Health Insurance Plans
Short-term health insurance plans are great for those who find ACA health insurance premiums unaffordable. This insurance helps provide an affordable health insurance coverage safety net for those who can’t afford individual or family insurance.
It’s important to remember that short-term plans can deny you based on pre-existing conditions or can refuse to pay for medical conditions the policyholder had before the plan took effect.
While these plans are cheap and can provide you with some health insurance coverage, they do not have the same comprehensive coverage as ACA-compliant plans.
Though the benefits are not as robust as an ACA-compliant plan, Short Term Health Insurance can save you money in insurance premiums. These plans are recommended for drivers that are in relatively good health.
If you are just getting started as an owner-operator, an affordable Short-Term Medical Policy may help control your costs.
Organizational Insurance
Through the Truckers Service Association (TSA) you can enroll in Independent Advantage Health Insurance Coverage. They have two options, Major Medical coverage, and Limited Medical coverage. Major Medical options are available for owner-operators through many of the nation's top major medical carriers. Limited Medical coverage is their lower-cost alternative that provides assistance with day-to-day medical expenses. Limited medical plans have an annual cap on the amount the insurer will pay for medical expenses and some benefits have a per-visit limit. Contact a TrueChoices advisor to learn more and enroll.
Truckers also have the option to become members of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) and take advantage of their healthcare and life insurance for themselves and their families. There are several benefits of OOIDA health insurance. The medical benefits group offers different types of plans so that OOIDA health insurance costs can vary. There are, however, many discounts and rebates offered by their service providers, which will help to bring down OOIDA insurance payments.
Medsharing Plans
Another option truck drivers have for health insurance is government-compliant medsharing plans. These plans are similar to traditional health insurance except your premiums are put into an escrow account. Apart from the Member’s Shared Responsibility Amount, claims are paid through the escrow account. Preventative care, doctor’s visits, and prescription discounts are all things you can expect to be included in a Medsharing plan. You can typically purchase coverage through these plans year-round.
The best policy is one that strikes a balance among premiums, deductibles, and coverage that makes sense for the individual.
So Should You Have Insurance as an Owner-Operator Truck Driver?
Treat insurance as an investment in your financial well-being, not just your health. While the vast majority of uninsured U.S. adults cite high costs as the main reason for lacking coverage, out-of-pocket medical bills are the leading cause of American consumer bankruptcy. Of course, not paying for insurance can be less expensive in the short term, but uninsured people are just an illness or injury away from catastrophic health and financial consequences.

Average Cost of Trucking Insurance
While trucking insurance coverage will vary depending on the type of truck you drive and your coverage needs, a recent Progressive study offered some helpful insights into how much premiums might cost. The average monthly cost of premiums is around $640 for truckers in a specialty niche, like street sweeping or garbage hauling. Truckers moving heavy-duty freight can expect to pay a higher premium, averaging around $982 per month.
These estimates were based on drivers with a clean record seeking minimum coverage only. Your rates will vary depending on several factors discussed below.
How to Save on Trucking Insurance
Trucking insurance isn’t cheap, but it’s necessary. Fortunately, you can do a few things to save on coverage, and certain providers might offer special discounts you can take advantage of.
- Maintain clean driving records: Whether you’re a single owner-operator or you have employees, maintaining clean driving records can help keep your premiums relatively low.
- Hire experienced drivers: Typically, insurance costs are lower for drivers with more experience.
- Pay for the year: If you pay your policy in full for the year rather than monthly, certain insurers may be willing to give you a discount on your coverage.
- Opt for a newer truck: Newer trucks with modern safety equipment may be less expensive to insure than older trucks with fewer safety features.
- Carefully consider your routes: Mapping out your routes carefully could work in your favor as you shop for insurance. Insurers consider where you travel as they’re calculating the cost of your premiums. If possible, try to avoid major cities and areas known for terrible weather.
Essential Cost Variables for Insurance
Similar to your personal auto policy, several factors will impact the cost of your commercial trucking insurance, and you’ll likely get different quotes as you compare policies. Here are some things insurers typically look at to determine coverage costs.
When it comes to commercial truck insurance, your years of experience will impact your insurance costs. Those with more years on the road will likely pay lower premiums than those with fewer years of driving experience.
In general, insurance companies consider males to be higher-risk drivers than females. Insurance Institute of Highway Safety data shows that men are more than twice as likely to be involved in a serious accident than women, so you may pay more for coverage if you’re a man.
Credit Score
Your insurer may look at your business credit score when you apply for coverage. Higher scores will likely result in lower premiums, as a high credit score indicates that you typically meet your financial obligations.
Your location and driving routes can also factor into the cost of your premiums. For instance, drivers located in a major metropolitan area may pay higher premiums. Those who often travel through major cities may also pay a higher cost for coverage.
Vehicle/Model
The type of truck you drive will impact the cost of your insurance. While it probably goes without saying, those who drive larger, older-model 18-wheelers will have more expensive coverage than drivers looking to insure a commercial pickup.
Type of Coverage
While you must have certain coverages such as liability, other insurance coverages are optional. The type and amount of coverage you need for your truck will affect your premium costs.
You’ve got questions. The Drive has answers.
Q. What are the major types of insurance a trucking company needs?
A. While proof of liability (property damage and bodily injury) and cargo coverage is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA), other coverages can offer valuable protection. For instance, you may also benefit from physical damage or bobtail coverage.
Q. Which companies offer the best trucking insurance?
A. Some of the best trucking insurance companies offer several coverage options and valuable discounts that can help keep costs down. If you’re shopping for coverage, consider comparing policies from the following providers: OOIDA Three by Berkshire Hathaway Sentry State Farm Progressive NITIC EIB Direct
Q. Is insurance required for trucking companies?
A. Yes. The FMCSA — the U.S. government agency responsible for regulating the trucking industry — requires new operators to prove they have both liability coverage and cargo coverage. Minimum coverage amounts will vary based on whether you’re operating a freight or passenger vehicle.
Q. What is bobtail insurance coverage?
A. Despite its funny name, bobtail coverage offers serious protection. It’s a type of liability insurance designed to cover drivers who’ve already delivered their cargo and are heading home. So technically, it protects you when you’ve completed a job and you’re off-duty.

Best Overall Commercial Truck Insurance: Progressive
Coverage for a wide variety of trucks and trucking companies
Free state/federal insurance filings
Does business in all 50 states
Limits to travel radius may apply
Cannot purchase policy online; must work with agent
Progressive is one of the largest insurers of commercial trucking in the U.S., offering coverage for a range of vehicles and businesses, from tractor rigs and flatbeds to pickups and dump trucks. The insurer also offers specialized optional coverage, such as garagekeeper’s legal liability for tow truck operators, as well as more common add-ons like heavy truck roadside assistance. Additionally, Progressive says it will file any and all required state and federal proof-of-insurance certificates on behalf of policyholders free of charge. Progressive also boasts that it is the only insurer with a fully in-house team of claims adjusters. All of these factors are why we’ve named Progressive the best commercial truck insurer overall.
There are some potential drawbacks with Progressive, however. The company doesn’t offer primary liability insurance in Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, or New York to owner-operator “super regional” truckers, who cover a radius of more than 500 miles. And although Progressive’s website offers much more detail about its policy offerings than many competitors, you’ll still have to work with an agent in order to complete the quote process and purchase coverage.

Best for Single Vehicles and Fleets: Sentry
Specializes in commercial car and truck insurance
Nationwide availability
Limited information about coverage available on insurer website
No option to purchase policy online
Unlike some companies Sentry only offers commercial insurance, and it specializes in trucking coverage. The company says it works with agents nationwide that only cater to truckers, and all of its in-house claim adjusters are trucking specialists, according to the insurer’s website. That kind of expertise could be a real plus for customers who prefer to work with a representative. But people who prefer an online approach may find that the Sentry website isn’t as detailed as those of some competitors.
- Motor carrier insurance (rented vehicles, bodily injury/physical damage, loss-of-use expenses due to theft)
- Physical damage insurance (collision, comprehensive, named perils)
- Motor truck cargo insurance
- Non-trucking liability (use for non-business purposes)
- General liability (medical expenses, legal expenses, physical damage)
Best for Owner-Operators: CoverWallet
Quotes available online or through an agent
Works with multiple insurers to find cheapest coverage
Covers a wide range of trucks and drivers in multiple industries
Not an insurance company; does not underwrite the policies it offers
May not be able to buy coverage online
CoverWallet isn’t an insurance company, it’s a digital insurance brokerage that works with 10 third-party insurers to find customers the best policy for their particular needs. Insurers represented include Hiscox, Chubb, Travelers, and Progressive, all of which are included in our rating of the best small business insurance companies . CoverWallet could be a good option for owner-operators because the insurers represented offer a number of specialized coverages, such as hot shot truck insurance (for freelance drivers who haul loads on short-notice basis) as well as traditional owner-operator insurance.
Unlike other companies, you may be able to get a quote online and purchase coverage without having to speak to an agent, though some companies may require working with a representative in order to complete the transaction. Also, some customers may prefer working directly with an insurance company, rather than going through an intermediary like CoverWallet.

The Bottom Line
When it comes to choosing the best commercial truck insurance, Progressive may be the best insurer for most drivers and owners. However, this kind of coverage is highly specialized, and the best insurance company for a fleet owner may not be the best provider for an independent contractor who owns his own rig or cargo van. Because Progressive is one of the insurers represented by CoverWallet, it may pay to check with CoverWallet first to see if it or another company can meet your needs.

Commercial truck insurance is form of business insurance that is designed to protect the policyholder against financial loss or hardship that results from covered incidents and perils such as:
- Injury to employees, customers, and others
- Damage to or loss of cargo
- Damage to or destruction of personal property, yours or others
In most cases, a commercial truck insurance policy will cover any employee who is driving a company vehicle. Some insurers require that these drivers – sometimes called “permissive users” – be named on the policy; other companies do not. Addtionally, a commercial truck policy may or may not include coverage for personal use, depending on who owns the vehicle (yourself versus your employer, for example), among other factors.
Coverage requirements and amounts vary from state to state and vary greatly based on the kind of truck or vehicle you drive. Rates and coverage needs depend on whether you drive for an employer on a full-time basis or work on a contract or freelance basis, and whether you own or lease your own rig or drive one owned by an employer.
As with car insurance, a standard commercial truck policy should include:
- Liability insurance protects you from financial loss if you’re found responsible for physical damage to another person’s property. It also covers medical bills related to any injuries you may cause to others.
- Collision insurance pays for repairing physical damage to your vehicle caused by an accident or striking an object like a street lamp.
- Comprehensive insurance pays for physical damage to your truck caused by a non-accident-related covered peril such as vandalism or weather damage.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance is designed to reimburse you for expenses related to being struck by another driver who is either uninsured or lacks sufficient coverage to pay for your damages. It may or may not be optional.
In addition, a commercial truck insurer should offer:
- Motor truck cargo insurance is designed for for-hire drivers who drive dump trucks, tractors, box trucks, cement mixers, cargo vans, dually pick-ups, flatbeds, or car haulers. It offers liability protection against damage to or loss of cargo, including dumping of loads and fire or collision.
- Non-trucking liability insurance is designed for drivers who lease their vehicles from an operator that provides primary liability coverage. This kind of insurance covers your truck during personal (non-business) use, including running errands and attending family events. It does not cover hauling loads or transit to and from the workplace.
- Rental reimbursement insurance will cover the leasing of a replacement truck for a set period of time (e.g. 30 days) if your own vehicle is rendered inoperable due to an accident. This insurance may also include compensation for bills or truck payments if you are unable to work due to your truck being inoperable.
- Trailer interchange insurance protects you from financial losses if the trailer or cargo it contains is damaged by fire, collision, or vandalism, for example.
In most cases, you must carry commercial truck insurance if you drive a car, truck, van, or specialized vehicle to conduct business. Examples include:
- Transporting goods, such as a flower delivery van
- Carrying passengers, such as ride-sharing cars or limousines
- Providing a service, such as a mobile pet-grooming van
- Hauling heavy equipment or tools with a vehicle and/or a trailer
Nearly every state imposes some sort of minimum requirement for liability insurance, although coverage amounts and limits vary from state to state. Most also impose additional insurance requirements that depend on what kind of commercial business you own or work for.
As with other kinds of insurance, the price that you pay for a commercial truck policy will depend on a number of factors, including:
- State where your business is located
- Years of operation as a business
- Driving history
- Distance driven, aka operating radius or usage radius
- Type of truck(s) driven
- Kind of cargo being carried
- Amount of coverage needed
- U.S. Department of Transportation authority, if required

What trucking companies have the best health insurance?
Discussion in ' Questions From New Drivers ' started by VinnyVincent , Oct 11, 2018 .

Hi, So one of the main reasons I'm getting into trucking is because I need good health insurance and I need it quickly, which isn't possible in my current industry. With that said; I may as well be looking for a company that offers some of the best benefits. I would also specifically like to know how the health insurance at Schneider is. They are currently the company I am strongly considering starting out with.

Tanker companies probably have the best health insurance and maybe food service companies. Plenty of tanker companies hire Houston drivers right out of cdl school. Labatt Food Service in Houston hires new cdl grads. Lily Transportation is hiring Houston drivers. Call and ask about health insurance . Lily has been hiring new cdl grads lately. $75,000 - $85,000 a year Do you want tanker company names? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's some tanker companies that hire Houston new cdl grads: SVTN - www.svtn.com Tidewater Transit Gemini Transport Western Dairy Transport - www.wdtmilk.com Superior-Carriers CTL Transportation Schneider Bulk Trimac Transportation W.W. Transport - may have something; it's non-hazmat food grade dry bulk. www.wwtransportinc.com
Thanks ChinaTown! Extremely useful info right there! I was under the impression that food grade might not pay as much as HAZMAT, but 75-85K seems great! Maybe I should look more into that. No need to expose myself to hazardous substances if I don't have to, I suppose.
W.W. Transport hauls lots of corn and flour. I did some of that when I worked for Tankstar and it's really easy work with good pay.
If you decide you can't do a private cdl school right now, then try Western Dairy Transport and FFE (Frozen Food Express) since they both have their own cdl school and provide meals & lodging. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ---Western Dairy Transport truck photo:------FFE (Frozen Food Express) truck-----

I'm a proponent of trucking company schools; not all of them, but a few are pretty good. We just do what fits our situation best.

What to know about Small Business Insurance
As a business owner, you likely need some kind of small business insurance. But what kind of coverage depends on the type of business you run, its size and its revenue.
The most common small business insurance products include:
- Business owner’s policy (BOP): A BOP is a basic package of business insurance products combined into one policy. It combines essentials like property insurance, liability coverage and business interruption insurance.
- Commercial auto: If you make deliveries, transport clients or use vehicles for other business operations, you’ll likely need a commercial car insurance policy.
- Liability insurance: Liability insurance protects you against lawsuits resulting from bodily or personal injuries or property damage incurred by clients or vendors in dealing with your business.
- Property insurance: Property insurance is a must if you have valuable equipment, supplies or a physical business space; it protects you from losses that may occur due to storm damage, fires or theft.
- Workers compensation : If you have employees, you’ll likely need to get workers’ compensation coverage to protect your employees in cases of work-related injuries or illnesses.
- Errors and omissions (professional liability) insurance: Businesses that give advice, such as financial planners, or provide physical care need professional liability insurance. It covers your legal expenses and other fees if you’re sued due to negligence or a failure to provide services.
Besides those basic coverage options, you can often customize your policy by adding additional coverages to your policy. Common add-ons include:
- Cyber liability: If you do most of your business online, handle sensitive information or store customer data like email dresses or payment information, you’ll need a cyber liability policy. These policies provide protection in cases of hacks or data breaches that compromise sensitive information.
- Business interruption insurance: If your business operations are interrupted and you lose revenue for a covered reason, such as building damage after a fire, business interruption coverage provides you with some compensation.
How to choose a small business insurance company
To choose a small business insurer, consider the following factors:
- Company size: Some insurers specialize in policies for freelancers or solopreneurs, while others may offer policies to businesses with 20 to 100 employees. Your company size — and how much you expect it to grow — will affect which insurer is a good fit.
- Equipment and buildings: If your business operations involve a brick-and-mortar store or warehouse, equipment, vehicles and several employees, you’ll need a much more robust policy than someone operating a small, online business from their home office. Depending on your company’s operations, you may even need specialized coverage add-ons, such as cyber insurance or commercial auto coverage.
- Risks: Businesses vary in risk based on their industry and business model. For example, an academic tutoring business will likely have less of a liability risk than a roofing company. Think about what risks your company faces, such as what kind of equipment you work with, how often clients or customers will come onto your property and if you handle sensitive information.
- Cost: Small business insurance can vary significantly in cost between companies, so it’s a good idea to get quotes from several leading small business insurers to find the best deal.
If you’re still unsure about which types of insurance products are right for you, take a look at our comprehensive guide to small business insurance .
Frequently asked questions
What does business insurance cover.
Business insurance coverages and exclusions vary by policy; a basic BOP covers the following:
- Property insurance for the business’ buildings and equipment
- Business interruption insurance for the loss of earnings that may occur from fires, storm damage or other major disasters
- General liability protection that covers your legal responsibility if another party is injured or experiences damages from your business
What is general liability insurance?
General liability protects you from losses related to injuries, property damage or misleading advertising. If you have clients who visit your business premises — and therefore are at risk of becoming hurt in an accident on your property — general liability coverage is a necessity.
How much does business insurance cost?
The cost of coverage depends on a wide range of factors, including your company size, industry and location. In general, you should expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per year for a basic business owners policy (BOP).

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand
MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.
The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.
National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.
A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.
The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.
Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.
