Photography Careers: Everything You Need to Know in 2022 to Land Your Dream Career in Photography

Photography Careers: Everything You Need to Know in 2022 to Land Your Dream Career in Photography

posted on January 2, 2022

photography careers

Successful photography careers aren’t easy to come by.  But then again, if things were easy, everybody would do them right?

I think one of the biggest reason that you don’t see more people with careers in photography is simply because it might be one of the best jobs in the world.  But like anything truly amazing in this world, it’s also extremely difficult.

What follows is meant to help you decide if a photography career is right for you and, if it is, how to land your dream job.

This article was last updated January 1, 2022.

Six Reasons Why Careers in Photography are Amazing

Photography careers are now.

First, it’s always at the cusp of the times.  When newspapers exploded, so did a need for photography.  The same was true for the explosion of the internet and, it’s current state which we like to call social media.  With technology expanding more rapidly than ever before, the need for great photographers continues to increase.

For better or worse, photography is also accessible to most people.  With DSLRs now becoming cheaper than ever before, the market is saturated with both new photographers and opportunities to make photography work as a career.

Most photographers have cut their teeth out of sheer boredom, having picked up a camera to pass time.  The ability to take photos whenever and wherever can’t be ignored, either.  As an expressive outlet, we can tell stories and create art out of our surroundings and, with gratitude, I say that photography is always there for you when you need it.

All of my friends who are photographers absolutely love what they do, but what I love the most is that a photographer is complete in control of his/her own destiny.  There are so few gatekeepers left to tell us what we can and can’t do, who we can and can’t work for, that our careers are totally in our own hands.  Careers in photography don’t require us to create a resume and go to a panel interview and I sincerely hope that never changes.

You’re an Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is somebody who leverages their knowledge of an industry to start and grow a business in it.  As entrepreneurs, we get to be our own boss and have financial independence.  Not everybody that I know is wired for this type of work but 100% of entrepreneurs and and so are 100% of the successful full-time photographers that I know.  We simply feel like we’re drowning working for somebody else.

If you have less chops in the business side of things (that’s why you’re here at Photo MBA, right?), then another option is to work for an agency.  With high quality creative always in demand, it’s entirely possible to work for a creative agency in advertising and a myriad of other markets.  Salaried jobs have their benefits, but if you’re like me, seeing the progress in your career and knowing that it’s all on you is something you strive for daily.

Pursuing clients and working as a freelance photographer means that you get to develop a brand, your marketing, choose who you work for and in what capacity, as well as working when and where you want.  In 2016, there’s no reason that you can’t leverage the amazing power of social media (the internet) to build a strong personal and/or professional brand and trade that up to high-quality clients.

Night Owl Seeks Lucrative Career

Everybody likes to be romantic about how they hate their 9-5 job and how they’d be so successful if they didn’t have that constraint.

And it might not be a popular opinion, but I think that while we’re all photographers, photography careers aren’t for everybody.  The truth is that the vast majority of people would prefer the perceived safety and security of a regular ‘job’ versus the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

A career in photography might be for you if:

  • You don’t keep conventional hours
  • You focus mostly on your strengths and tend to outsource your weaknesses
  • You work odd hours

As a photographer, you don’t have to show up to an office and edit photos from 9-5.  You can edit photos from 9pm to 5am if that’s how you work best.  You can choose to take more traditional jobs or you can work weddings where you’re there for 10-12 hours and then off all week.  Your schedule could change every single week and every week, and even every single day, can be different from the last.

The Beautiful Balance

And while photography careers are often characterized by unusual schedules and manic work hours, but there’s also this sense of beautiful balance that accompanies it.

The balance comes in the sense that you get to have a taste of everything.  There are opportunities that will allow you to travel, work from home, work with teams, spend time with your family, explore new places, and meet new people.

It doesn’t matter if I’m a man or woman, young or old, as long as I can deliver an amazing client-experience and tell vivid stories with my work.  You can work with people from all walks of life and, because of your photography career, get access to things you might otherwise never get to experience.

Careers in Photography are the New Musician Turned Actor

Multi-potentialite or multi-hyphenate are terms being thrown around a lot to describe people in 2016 who are multiple titles and pursuits.  Thirty years ago, you might describe yourself as a photographer but today, you’d call yourself a photographer-writer-artist, adding in whatever else you’re interested in or working on.

You used to be some sort of unicorn if you could jump from one industry to the next, as a musician would make the leap to acting.  However, in 2016 almost everybody has more than one pursuit.

Chase Jarvis, one of my favorite photographers, is not only a photographer, but a writer, tech entrepreneur, media producer, and CEO.

Additionally, you can move within the career of photography to shoot a multitude of different subjects, later on adding in leading workshops, mentoring, videography, etc.  You can literally do whatever you want to now.  With the gatekeepers gone, you can pursue tangential passions to photography as you see fit.  It’s common for two photographers to get together or a photographer to meet somebody working on a unique project and join them in it.

You Get Paid to Relieve Stress

Having a photography career means, essentially, that you’re getting paid to relieve stress.  Granted, the business side of photography, what we focus on here at Photo MBA, can be incredibly stressful, but being paid for something you’re passionate about is one of the greatest things on earth.  Going out into the world and taking photos is one of the best kinds of therapy and careers in photography provide that on a daily basis.

On a shoot, you are both creative director and artist, deciding what will be shot and how.  You’re both architect and mason.  You can follow your creative vision and create the art that you want to, especially once you start attracting clients (note I said attracting, not pursuing) that appreciate the value of your style of photography.

Are You Ready for a Career in Photography?

If you’re interested in pursuing careers in photography, there’s a good chance you fall into one of two groups:

  • You’re a super-passionate young photographer trying to see if your passion for photography is worth pursuing as a career.
  • You’ve been doing photography on the side for a while, in addition to your full-time job, and want to see if it makes sense to pursue it full time.  This could mean working for yourself or working for someone else (and all of the perks and trials that go along with each).

Here are the three most common questions people ask when they’re looking into photography careers.

What does a career in photography mean?

Careers in photography mean more than just taking pictures and telling stories.

In fact, the pictures you take are just the tip of the iceberg.  If you want to own your own business as a photographer, you have to focus just as much on business as you do on your craft.

It’s my personal belief that if you’re reading this, you’re a photographer, even if you don’t have any paying clients.

A career in photography means that every negative is also a positive.

For example:

Your schedule is erratic and different every day -> You control your own schedule.

You never know where your next paycheck comes from -> You’re rewarded for working harder and smarter.

A career in photography means you’re an entrepreneur.  You use your business skills as well as your camera skills to create a thriving business and making a living doing work you’re proud of.

How much will I make in my photography career?

This is covered pretty extensively in our 2016 guide to Photographer Salary , but photographers make what they’re worth. The market is the market and the market decides what you’re services are worth.

This is both the best and worst part of being a photographer.  You find out really fast if what you’re doing is working with the clients you want to serve because they will, or they won’t, hire you.

I couldn’t disagree with the Bureau of Labor Statistics any more.   They claim that the average photographer makes $31k per year and while that might be true, averages can be VERY deceiving.  I would much prefer to see the median (middle number) or the mode) most common number) from their data.  If you average my yearly income with Kobe Bryant, the average is reflective on neither.

Do I need to go to college to get a career in photography?

One of my favorite articles over at Fstoppers is Clay Cook’s treatise on not going to college.

Without going down the rabbit hole on how I agree with every single freaking point he makes in the article (you should go read it, it’s awesome), I’ll summarize by saying:

No, you don’t need to go to college to have a photography careers.

But Brendan, my dad would straight up murder me if I don’t go to / finish college.

I understand there’s a lot of societal pressure to go to college.  There really is.

There’s a great clip from Gary Vaynerchuk where he asks somebody ‘Who are you afraid of letting down?”

Here’s a creative third option (are are creative after all, right?): go to college and start your business then.  Don’t drink and party, but instead start running your business out of your apartment or dorm room.  Parents and society are happy and so are you.  If your push hard and your business is running in full swing before graduation, you can always finish later.

The Highest Paying Photography Jobs

professional studio photographer

With smartphone camera advancements, the old adage, “everyone’s a photographer” has never been more true. But to make a living at photography, you’ll need a variety of skills and equipment to meet the specific needs of your clients. If you’re wondering how much do photographers make, we’ll look into the different income streams you can explore.

Beyond investing in cameras, lenses, tripods, lights, and accessories, a professional photographer needs to know the right gear to use in each situation and how to adjust settings and equipment for the best possible shot. A portrait photographer has to make subjects feel at ease, while product photographers need a strong understanding of light, reflections, and angle.

With knowledge and experience, you can set yourself apart from other photographers as you build your photography career.

How Much Do Photographers Make on Average?

The average photographer salary varies widely based on experience level, location, and the type of work they perform. Photographers who are hired as assistant photographers and second shooters typically earn an hourly wage anywhere from $25-$100 per hour, while those who work with organizations like universities and corporations can earn $35,000 to $100,000 per year, sometimes with benefits.

But how much do photographers get paid? Well, in addition to who you work for, there are different answers based on location, too. Differences in cost of living between cities and rural areas cause fluctuations in photographer pay.

If you intend to create your own photography company or work as a freelance photographer , you’ll have some control over your earnings. Many freelancer photography rates start out low to build experience and credibility. Once they have a few gigs under their shoulder straps, they may raise their rates to what the local market allows.

It can be scary to raise your rates , but once you realize you can make just as much from one shoot as from four, you’ll feel OK with turning down lower-paying work.

Even though photographer salaries vary significantly, here are some of the jobs that will consistently offer the highest pay scales in the industry.

The Best Paid Photography Jobs in 202 2

If you’re seriously considering pursuing a career in photography , know that the industry has become very challenging to navigate. Photography is an incredibly saturated industry and requires some serious work to break into. But if you have the talent and the effort, it can lead to a highly creative and profitable career.

Listed here are some of the highest paying photography jobs in the world:

Freelance Photographer

Fashion photographer, fine art photographer, medical photographer, product photographer, film set photographer, white house photographer, wedding photographer, social media photographer and influencer, content creator/youtuber.

freelance photographer shooting the exterior of the Taj Mahal

Here’s something to think about: The highest paying photography job doesn’t exist. In the year 2000, we took 86 billion photos. In 2019, that number grew to more than 1.4 trillion. The exponential rise of digital technology has put all but the most dedicated and established film processing labs out of business and brought the power of technically advanced SLRs into the hands of the average consumer. Alas, photography was not just for professionals anymore.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , there were just under 110,500 photography job openings in 2020. Collectively, this offered a median income of $41,280 annually. Compare that to something like accounting and auditing, a role that boasted about 1.4 million jobs with a median annual salary of over $73,560 for the same year. After investing three to four years of time and money into professional camera gear, education, and practice, the reward suddenly doesn’t seem so great.

What does all of this tell us? One way to work your way up the “best paid photography jobs” list is to start your own photography business . Some of the most creative (and lucrative) photographs of the modern age were shot by freelancers, so as long as you have a camera and some supplementary gear, you’re sure to find how to make money with photography .

Success in this area is less about camera skills and more about a mix of strong business acumen and great sales experience. Ironically, avoidance of the latter is commonly what drives people to want a career in photography in the first place.

Below are some of the most common photography jobs for freelance shooters:

  • Sports Photographer
  • Events Photographer
  • Assistant Photographer
  • Stock Photographer

How to Become a Freelance Photographer

There are many ways to earn money as an independent photographer. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of finding your forte—basically what you’ve been practicing the longest for or are really good at—and then looking for potential clients. You’ll probably need to build your photography portfolio first, and then offer your services to people you know so you can build your confidence and increase your asking rate.

  • Pros : Freelancing allows you to be your own boss (sort of), so you can take any kind of photography assignment you like and get paid directly by the client.
  • Cons: Working for multiple clients can sometimes be a handful and not working for a specific company can give you a pretty unstable income, unless you become established and popular enough to get consistent bookings.

outdoor fashion photoshoot

Being a fashion photographer — like America’s Next Top Model judge and fashion photographer Nigel Barker — is one of the most desirable jobs in the industry. Unknown to many, it involves more than just capturing high-fashion poses on the catwalk. One must also be prepared to take photos in virtually any location.

For many photographers, it’s a dream job to be shooting for big magazines, fashion catalogs, and even billboards. Former Allure magazine photo editor Clio McNicholl told Fashion.net that she gets around 50 unsolicited portfolio submissions per month. After all, Allure has an exceptionally large monthly circulation of almost 900,000, making it one of the most sought-after publications for both aspiring and professional fashion photographers.

But like sports photography, professional fashion photography requires connections to other photographers, designers, and other high profile people in the industry, aside from requiring a signature style and a strong portfolio.

“If I don’t know who the person is, I ask them to send me some promotional material. Generally I only see people who are coming with a direct recommendation from somebody I know,” McNicholl revealed.

How to become a fashion photographer

Focus on improving your qualifications and building your network. Consider moving to cities where there is a demand for fashion photographers and tapping friends or family who may have connections to the industry.

  • Pros: Meeting creative people, travel opportunities, and creative freedom.
  • Cons: Highly competitive, and often not as glamorous as it looks.

Among the jobs on this list, doing fine art photography allows you to exercise your creativity the most. However, it also takes a lot of luck to become a successful fine art photographer.

In his interview with Fstoppers.com, prolific fine art photographer Ted Forbes revealed that his fellow photographer, Peter Lik, has sold more than $500,000,000 worth of prints from his more than 15 galleries despite not being regarded as one of the best in the field. Stephan Brigidi , on the other hand, admitted to Pacific Standard that he had to take photography teaching jobs, commercial photography projects, book publishing, and even wait on tables for a short period of time to support his passion for fine art photography.

How to become a fine art photographer

While aspiring fine art photographers will most likely have to hope and wait before getting their big break, having a degree in fine arts adds value to your credibility, provides you with the necessary technical skills to improve your work, and helps expand your network of fellow artists.

  • Pros: There’s always the fulfillment that comes with selling your first photo. And with the growing demand for fine art photography, there’s more chances of people actually appreciating your work as well as greater influence for growth as an artist.
  • Cons: Fine art involves featuring work that is not exactly commercial in nature, so you’ll have to be persistent in trying to make a name for yourself as you pursue this career.

medical photographer

Much like any other job in the medical field, being a medical (or biomedical) photographer pays very well, but not before undergoing some serious training, acquiring high levels of technical skill, and gaining detailed knowledge in scientific processes.

You may be tasked to document or photograph anything that is health-related, which normally includes surgical procedures and even autopsies. Other assignments include digitizing images, creating prints of statistical data on charts and graphs, and doing some photomicrography, sometimes for use in educational materials like pamphlets, textbooks, teaching models, instructional films, and exhibits. Your work may also be used as evidence in legal procedures.

How to become a medical photographer

Depending on the targeted position, formal photography studies (a full-blown degree) and medical training may be needed, on top of being detail-oriented and creative.

  • Pros: It’s highly lucrative, plus it allows you to take part in the improvement of the medical field.
  • Cons: Aside from the often graphic content, there’s not much room for creative freedom.

product photographer shooting make-up

Although it may seem to be a trivial job, product photography can rake in a decent amount of cash depending on the project and the photographer’s experience. Clients also vary—from artisans and businesses to big-time advertising agencies—but they generally need professional-quality images of their products for promotional purposes.

The resulting images taken can directly affect sales, which is why it’s crucial for companies to get an experienced product photographer. Whether you’re shooting food and beverage items, gadgets, cosmetics, furniture, and even industrial materials, it’s usually up to you to make them look as attractive and appealing as possible.

Many photographers in this field work freelance, which works well for companies that prefer to hire multiple photographers with varying creative styles for different types of projects. Work hours can be as long as 40 hours per week on average, depending on the number of clients, the product, and the contract.

How to become a product photographer

Photographers entering this field don’t necessarily require formal photography training, but they do need to be very skilled and experienced in product photography. Knowledge in photo post-processing is also a major plus.

  • Pros: There’s a steady increase of clients and products that will need your services.
  • Cons: You won’t always get to exercise your creativity as much as the other photography jobs here do.

actors being photographed on a film set

Known for his celebrity portraits and promo posters of prolific TV shows like Homeland and Californication , Los Angeles-based freelance photographer Patrick Ecclesine is one such person. A self-professed “gun for hire in Hollywood,” Ecclesine takes photos of actors on set to produce posters and promotional material for film and television. However, being a film set photographer is not all glitz, glamour, and six-figure salaries, Patrick admitted in an interview with Shutterbug .

“When I first considered shooting stills for film and television shows, I was warned that still photographers are routinely humiliated and fired by hypersensitive, prickly actors, often on a whim,” says Ecclesine.

You’d be forgiven for thinking all the $$$ you’re raking in from this work would ease the burden of a high-stress work environment. While it’s not the lowest paying photography job out there, it isn’t the highest paying either.

“The pay isn’t staggering. It’s just under $50 an hour. However, it’s very good if you’re working long hours on a feature film. After eight hours you get paid time and a half; over 12 hours and you get double time. Considering that most feature films are pulling 12 to 14 hour days for a two to six month period, you can do the math and see that it adds up. Television is less lucrative because they put you on an eight-hour day. The upside to this is that, while the crew continues to slave away, you get to go home early,” Ecclesine added in the interview.

But before you turn up to your favorite director’s office with a portfolio, there is a significant number of hoops you’ll have to jump through first—more so compared to the majority of other photographic jobs out there.

“In order to work as a photographer on a film or television show, you have to get into the union. The I.A.T.S.E. (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees). The bad news is that not only does it cost $6000 to join, but it’s very difficult to get in.”

How to become a film set photographer

According to Ecclesine, there are three ways to qualify as a photographer on a film or television show.

  • Work and get paid for 100 days on a non-union show where you earn at least $50 a day;
  • Work on a non-union show that happens to go union;
  • Be “grandfathered in” by a producer or director who insists upon working with you, and you only.

For Patrick, it was a combination of perseverance and being in the right place at the right time.

  • Pros : Compensation can be very generous if you work long hours
  • Cons : Can be particularly hard to get into, especially for beginners

White House photograph of President Obama speaking at the podium

Photographing the most powerful people in the world would be a dream for most aspiring photographers. But for former Chief Official White House photographer Pete Souza , it’s just another day. From capturing portraits of the first dogs of the United States, Bo and Sunny , to covering tense moments in the situation room , Pete Souza’s job as President Obama’s personal photographer and “fly on the wall of the White House” was so coveted, he became an online celebrity.

So how did he get it? Turns out it wasn’t his two degrees (a B.S. in Public Communications and an M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication), or his three-decade long photojournalism career at renowned publications like the Chicago Tribune , Life , and National Geographic —it was whom he knew .

In 2005, Pete was asked to take on a project documenting the inaugural year of a new US Senator named Barack Obama. Documenting Obama’s rise to the presidency in 2008, the two established a strong relationship and Pete was asked to be the Chief Official White House photographer because of it.

“The job of presidential photographer is all about access and trust, and if you have both of those, you’re going to make interesting, historic pictures,” Souza says.

To take the best possible images, the photographer has to develop a kind of invisibility. “For a presidential photographer, there’s no higher praise than being utterly ignored, so the subjects pay you no attention and you get the most natural shots,” says Souza.

John F. Kennedy was the first president to hire his own photographer, so such a role has only existed for a little over 40 years. During the Obama Administration, Pete Souza oversaw a whole team of White House photographers who took up to 20,000 photos of the president’s administration in a week.

How to become a White House photographer :

You have to know someone from the White House and, more importantly, to earn the president’s trust.

  • Pros : It pays significantly big to be working in the White House, plus you get to meet the president and his family.
  • Cons : Can be a difficult field to enter, and requires long hours.

man taking wedding photos of couple outdoors

Not many understand why wedding photographers do what they do, especially when it’s at the expense of a more stable career. After all, it doesn’t really start paying all that well until word gets out about your experience, talent, and most of all, stunning images. That’s what happened to Alan Kirwin, who made a career shift to wedding photography despite already being successful in the computer industry and was once disappointed by his own wedding photographer in 2002.

“At the time, people couldn’t understand why I was giving up such a successful and lucrative career to take wedding pictures,” Kirwin told The Guardian . “Without looking at the whole context, they thought I was crazy.”

Like many wedding photographers, Kirwin worked with his current set of skills to his advantage, particularly branding , marketing, and computing, and aims to meet clients’ demand for more candid photos that captured the essence of their weddings.

How to become a wedding photographer

After earning a photography degree, the wisest route is to first apply as a second shooter to several weddings before even dreaming of being a main or only shooter. Being under the wing of a more experienced photographer while solving technical problems on the job will really sharpen your skills and boost your confidence.

  • Pros: With the increasing demand for priceless wedding photos, there are more opportunities to increase income.
  • Cons : High equipment and occasional space cost when you start venturing out on your own or shoot in studios.

There’s a reason more and more photographers want to go the social media photographer or influencer route: It pays well, if you do it right. In fact, one report says brands pay influencers with over 1 million followers up to $250,000 per post. Yes, you read that right, per post .

To be clear: Being a social media photographer and influencer requires a ton of work. You have to organically build a following while creating your signature style and engaging with fans, brands, and potential clients. Plus, you do this while figuring out revenue streams along the way. But, for those who are willing to put in time and effort, this job can pay well.

Since more and more brands are looking at engagement numbers versus sheer following, you can even make social media photography a solid career as a “micro-influencer” as long as your followers are engaged and eager for more.

How to become a social media photographer and influencer

The first and most obvious way to become a social media photographer and influencer is to choose your social-media channel(s). From there, start posting content, see what works best and what aligns with your vision, and stay engaged and consistent while following trends. Some social media influencers make money through sponsored content, affiliate links, or selling their own products. Others view social media influencing as one of many revenue streams in a larger photography business. It’s an approach that works all the same.

  • Pros : You have the freedom of owning your own business and setting your creative vision.
  • Cons : It takes a long time to build your following organically. You have to stay on top of trends with content largely dictated by the social media algorithms for best visibility.

youtuber recording with youtube equipment

Becoming a successful YouTuber is definitely a grind. For those who hustle through the hardest part—getting started—it can pay off. In fact, reports show that YouTubers with 100,000 subscribers who produce two videos per week can make up to $4,000 per month in ad revenue. Another report states that YouTubers with 1 million subscribers can earn $5,000 per month, or a rough average of $60,000 per year.

Like all things, financial income in this job category depends on a lot of things. You’ll need to decide how often you produce content, how engaged your viewers are, your own business savvy, and more. Plus, it’s worth remembering that getting started as a YouTuber takes time and money. You can begin with your smartphone, but oftentimes creators need better gear to up their professionalism and reach that next level. And, that gear can get expensive. Of course, this is all worth it for those who want to produce content, especially as new platforms like TikTok prove video is very much the future of social media.

How to become a content creator/ YouTuber

To become a YouTuber or content creator, it’s important to strategize your content flow. Of course, you’ll first have to start a YouTube channel . And what does your typical viewer want to see? Equally important: What do you want to be known for? To make money in this industry, you have to be excited about your niche. Otherwise, the work will feel like a slog, not fun, and your audience will pick up on that, too.

  • Pros : You get ultimate creativity, with no income ceiling. You can build the business you’ve envisioned and blaze your own trail.
  • Cons : But, it also takes time to get to that point—and it can get expensive with new gear.

What Type of Photography Makes the Most Money?

photographer sitting on a rock overlooking the city

You can trawl the Internet and read list after list of “The 10 Highest Paid Photographers” in search of an answer. However, your efforts will always be in vain. None of this information ever mentions sums (or even sources for that matter!). As we’ve seen, the most successful photographers among us are those who can sniff out and exploit the compelling array of opportunities made available with rapidly changing technologies on a daily basis.

If you’ve trudged through the years of learning how to operate a camera , enduring constant criticism as you struggle to find your “vision,” and suffered inevitable rejection as you try to prove yourself worthy of a career that leads the charts in its severe shortage of job prospects, we’re willing to bet you didn’t get into photography for the money—and that’s okay. A true revolutionary of the photographic art form shouldn’t be loving the exorbitant living he can make from it. Rather, you should be making a living from what you loves.

Can you make a living from photography?

The best answer to this question can be found by looking at a photography salary. According to Salary.com , the typical photographer makes between $58,840 and $77,585. That range of course varies depending on your niche, experience level, and specific job. And, it’s merely a range — how much photographers make varies. You can make much more than that, or much less. It’s all about your specific situation..

Understanding how much photographers make gives you a good idea of the work you can do and potential of this career path. It’s bright if you’re willing to work hard, take your time, make a name for yourself, and move up the ladder. What’s more, you can also hobble together a variety of revenue streams if you’re hoping to make a living from photography on your own. For example, some freelance photographers shoot weddings, photojournalism, and personal projects , while freelancing for local newspapers all in one. Others blend niche photography with online education to help new photographers succeed. Some sprinkle in social media influencing, too.

If you’re willing to get creative, and open to trying new paths, photography is a great option for visual creatives. Plus, it’s one you can make entirely your own. Check out these 10 important pointers to keep in mind if you’re hoping to start your own photography business .

What education is required to be a photographer?

As creatives examine the photography career paths available to them, they often start with a simple question: Do photographers need a college degree? According to the New York Institute of Photography , the straightforward answer to that is no . While a college degree may help you with business savvy (via business-school studies) or with navigating photography career paths (via a photography or photojournalism degree), it’s definitely not required.

Clients today are looking to hire photographers who have talent, experience, composure, and a solid portfolio that fits their needs. Education is rarely even part of the conversation, particularly for freelancers. Plus, with countless online photography courses and how-to videos available—think Adorama TV —you can find affordable, or even free, training to sharpen your skills.

Now, for traditional roles like a staff photographer job at a newspaper or if you’re hoping to become a photo editor at a glossy magazine, you’ll likely need at least an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to be considered. But this field, as well as education, is constantly changing, so that may not be the case in the future. (It’s best to check your dream job’s skills and requirements before you start out on your photography career.)

How much should I charge for photography?

Perhaps the biggest question budding photographers have after asking “how much do photographers make?” is determining how much to charge for their own photography. And like everything, that depends. A lot of photography revenue depends on the value you bring as a creator ; those with bigger names, like a Chris Burkard, may be able to charge more than a new, aspiring photographer. But that doesn’t mean aspiring photographers shouldn’t charge what they’re worth.

So how do you figure that out? The first step is studying your specific industries. Wedding photographers often make more than, say, photojournalists, and those specific ranges vary based on your location and experience.

According to Fash.com , photographers charge between $100 to $250 per hour or $25 to $100 per edited image. However, you can charge more or less depending on your specific situation. One of the best tools for determining how to price your images is a digital pricing calculator . It helps you account for what you need to pay, so you know how much you need to make (and therefore, how much you need to charge.) If you’re ever in doubt, or moving to a new city, it may be helpful to join a few local photography networking groups to ask around for typical rates, too.

Highest Paying Photography Jobs in 2024

Anabel author

Whenever anyone invests their blood, sweat, and tears into a passion – the question of income comes into play (because you need to eat too!). With photography, the commonly asked question is what the highest paying photography jobs are.

Although every genre of photography has the potential to rake in thousands and thousands, there are ten types of photography that tip the financial scales in their favor more than others. From commercial photography to real estate, here is summary table for the highest paying photography jobs mentioned in the article, along with their estimated annual salary ranges in the United States for the year 2024 :

Some types of photography are more profitable than others.

1. Commercial Photography

When considering what the highest paying photography jobs are, commercial photography springs to mind almost immediately. Commercial photography refers to images that are created for marketing and advertising use, ranging from product shots to full editorial content!

Commercial photography within itself has various niches that each generate its own form of income. For example, commercial music photographers create visual content for album covers and posters. This differs greatly in regard to income and payment than, say, commercial photography for a massage parlor service or perfume bottle.

Commercial photographers make income in two places: the photo shoot itself and the licensing of the images afterwards.

Unfortunately, in the statistics of it all, commercial photography tends to all be roped under one umbrella so the exact numbers can be a bit murky and difficult to identify (as the range can be anywhere from $57k per year to over $100k per year, according to services such as PayScale, Glassdoor, and ZipRecruiter).

That being said, what makes commercial photography so profitable are the licensing fees (which is a universal income source amongst all facets of commercial photography). Besides being paid for the actual photoshoot, the images, and the editing time, a photographer is also paid for the rights to use the photographs commercially. Licensing dictates how an image is used and for how long, changing its rate depending upon usage and duration.

2. Fashion Photography

A type of commercial photography that’s prevalent enough to be its own niche, fashion photography is another photography job that sits high on the list. This is a specialized field that focuses on presenting clothing and wardrobe accessories in the most flattering light possible.

Fashion photography is deeply ingrained in marketing, as the goal of this niche is to sell a lifestyle or idea associated with the clothing in order to increase sales. Fashion photographers have a goal of selling the items to whoever sees the photograph(s) and often succeed in doing so.

Fashion photographers often work for big fashion houses or companies.

With such a need for photography in the clothing world, fashion photographers earn a living as either freelancers being booked on an independent contractor basis, on staff for a clothing store or fashion house, or under an agency that sends them out to capture images.

Fashion photography pay changes based on whether the photographer is counted as an employee on an hourly rate or per-photo shoot. According to Salary.com, fashion photographers that are on staff earn approximately $21, but the salary range more commonly falls between $17 and $24. For the ones earning per shoot, the pay is much higher and can level out to approximately $70k per year.

3. Wedding Photography

Capturing a once-in-a-lifetime wedding day can be very profitable.

Wedding photography is definitely one of the highest-paying photography jobs that is, in fact, more accessible and easier to get into. This type of photography is a luxury, but most brides and grooms value it rather highly and are willing to pay what it takes to ensure their special day is beautifully documented.

In my professional experience, for couples, the wedding photography tends to take financial precedence over the other necessary components for a wedding day!

Although the cost for wedding photography ranges to such an extreme extent (with some photographers charging $500 for full-day coverage and others upwards of $10,000), the middle ground average fee per wedding is about $2,500 for six to eight hours of coverage. If you’re a successful wedding photographer, you’ll likely be working most weekends in the year, so that can average at approximately $130k per year! But the reality is that this number isn’t common to hit.

Remember, just because this is the number you earn, it doesn’t mean that’s the number you keep – wedding photography requires a lot of investment on your end, from long hours on your feet all the way to extra equipment to appropriate clothing. That’s just something to keep in mind!

4. Portrait Photography

Likely the most popular freelance photography type is portrait photography ! Much like commercial photography, the portrait world varies greatly and has so many subcategories that it can be hard to keep track of each niche. Better-known categories include acting headshots, senior portraits, and photographs for professional LinkedIn profiles. But portraits also tend to include modeling shots, candid portraits, and any image that prioritizes the individual. Portrait photographers don’t tend to be staff photographers on salary, they are more often than not self-employed individuals.

A good portrait can go a long way, and portrait photographers charge accordingly.

Portrait photography is one of those freelance photography endeavors that I consider having the potential for extremely high earnings (especially if you provide a more fine art or unique spin on your portrait work), but there isn’t much data to support how frequently those high earnings happen.

The average income is about (according to Ziprecruiter) $36,290 with the average salary being $17 an hour based on the pay rates of companies such as Lifetouch that hire portrait photographers frequently.

5. Family Photography

Family photography has a high likelihood of referrals and client loyalty, leading to more work for the photographer.

From documenting maternity sessions to a fun afternoon at a family reunion, family photographers are there to immortalize family memories. Although family photographers can be roped under the umbrella of portrait photographers, this genre is so widespread that it really does deserve its own category.

Much like wedding photography, family photography is a luxury that is heavily valued by people all over the world. Many families have a tradition of a yearly family photoshoot, and that’s where family photographers really shine. This type of photography also has a pretty high returning clientele, with most families becoming very loyal to the photographer they like. The referral rates are also decently high in this one, with moms often recommending their favorite picture-taker to fellow moms.

The average self-employed income for a family photographer is about $40k according to Ziprecruiter, which certainly puts it lower than weddings or commercial sessions. But, family photography can have a much lower cost of doing business, allowing you to retain more of those earnings.

In addition, there are two key business models in family photography whose incomes change depending on how you structure your business.

The first model is ‘shoot and burn’, in which the photographer charges for a photo session and includes digital files in the price. The photographer quite literally shoots the session and then ‘burns’ the photographs on a CD, USB stick, or transfer service and sends the digital files to the client.

The second model is called IPS, or In-Person-Sales photography, in which the photographer charges a session fee that does not include any images. The photographer finishes a gallery for the client and then invites the client to do a viewing in which the client orders the photographs they wish to have (most commonly as prints or products rather than digital files).

Shoot and burn photo sessions generally earn less in the family photography field than IPS photographers, who cash in on large product sales.

6. Photojournalist and News Photography

News photographers are often on staff at a news outlet, earning consistent income.

One of the few prestigious staff positions left in photography, news photographers capture world events as they unfold, telling countless stories through the eyes of their lenses. News photographers are still incredibly necessary, often having entire teams in most news outlets (whether it be television, print, or online).

Because photojournalists are usually in staff positions, the income levels are based on salary, rather than the gray area of self-employment as can be found in other photography jobs. News photographers make an average of $23 an hour, $926/week, or $4,013 per month according to calculations done by Ziprecruiter. Not a bad living at all, especially since the work is quite consistent!

7. Film Set Photography

Similar to a news photographer, film sets often have a behind-the-scenes photographer on staff. This is an independent contractor position rather than an employment position because film sets are temporary. These photographers capture all of the happenings on set, from the talent getting makeup applied to a blockbuster movie being filmed.

Television shows, movies, and music videos all need set photographers to capture the behind the scenes moments!

Film set photographers’ jobs range from working on small, independent film sets (which don’t tend to rake in a lot of dough) all the way to Universal Studios and Warner Brothers (which will rake in a lot of dough). The average zone that film photographers sit in, according to salary statistics, is $40,979 a year or $20 an hour.

8. Presidential Photography

Presidential photographers work as the president's personal photographer, an amazing position.

If you’ve been hired by the president of your country, you’ve certainly hit the big leagues! Presidential, or White House photographers, have a sole duty of capturing the day-to-day activities and official press images for the highest political figures in the country.

A type of 9-to-5 job, presidential photographers have a certain amount of hours they work per day. Presidential photographers in the past have been highly regarded photojournalists that caught the eye of the leader-in-charge. A sort of ‘upgrade’ to the news photographer, so to speak.

This esteemed position is difficult to get into, but if you do, the pay you can expect is an annual pay of $92,751 a year. Talk about a great pay-out for a very specific niche!

9. Medical and Scientific Photography

A type of photography many haven’t heard of (or considered), medical photography is a profitable endeavor for those that enjoy the scientific side of life. A perfect mashup of the artistic brain with the logical brain, medical photographers are in charge of using photography techniques and equipment to create high-quality images for medical and scientific purposes.

Medical photographers work alongside nurses and doctors, documenting procedures.

Photographs taken by medical photographers are typically captured on-site and document surgical or clinical procedures and circumstances. This can then aid healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of injury, illness, and disease.

According to Glassdoor, medical photographers make a little under $50k a year. With this position typically being salaried, akin to any other employee in a hospital, the wage tends to be based more on the hospital or medical setting than it does the actual duties of a photographer. Much like the rest of the medical field, specialties earn more than general practice.

10. Real Estate Photography

Real estate photography is necessary for the industry, giving the photographer leverage.

Professional real estate photographers help keep the housing and rental market turning, greasing the wheels with beautiful images that entice people to buy. It’s near-impossible to avoid hiring a real estate photographer, so these image-makers certainly have an advantage in the field – considering their photography is seen as less of a luxury and more of a necessity!

Because of this fact, real estate photographers can make a great living capturing beautiful homes, condos, apartments, and townhouses for real estate agents, brokers, and other property professionals. The needed gear isn’t incredibly intensive either, keeping the cost of doing business very reasonable.

The 2021 numbers state that a real estate photographer’s salary ranges from $42,168 to $60,520 per year, with a standard hourly rate of $29 per hour. This is a very livable range depending on your location.

How Much Do Professional Photographers Earn on Average?

Photographers can earn a very decent living on their artform.

The average pay for professional photographers has evolved since 2020. As of May 2022, the median hourly wage for photographers was reported to be $19.31 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, it’s important to note that this figure can vary widely based on factors such as experience, location, and the type of photography.

Moreover, the overall landscape of the photography industry is showing positive trends. The global photography market was valued at $42.81 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach $43.54 billion in 2023, with the United States holding a significant portion of this market. This growth is driven by factors such as the rise of e-commerce and the increasing demand for high-quality visual content.

In terms of professional photographer salaries in different cities, there is a noticeable variation. For instance, as of December 27, 2023, the average base salary for a professional photographer in the United States ranged from $46,846 to $65,116, with an average base salary of $53,807. Cities like San Francisco, New York, and Boston showed higher average salaries compared to other major U.S. cities.

These figures indicate that while the median hourly wage might seem modest, there are opportunities for higher earnings, especially in certain locations and within specific sectors of the photography market. The photography industry is also experiencing growth, providing more opportunities for photographers to thrive in their careers.

For detailed information, you can visit the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website and Salary.com.

High Paying Photography Jobs: Conclusion

To become a great photographer (and succeed), just buying professional photography gear, will not be enough. If you have the dedication to take a photography course  and invest thousands of hours into your craft, then there should be no reason why you cannot become a professional photographer and get some of the highest-paid photography jobs.

Pursue what you're passionate at!

Although there are photography niches that rank higher in income than others, the reality is that it’s a bit hard to truly gauge which one of the highest-paying photography jobs will bring you the most money at the end of the day. As such, you should determine what genre of photography you indulge yourself in based on your passions and interests, rather than what you think you can get paid!

Everything was shut down in 2020 I would think that’s why the average pay is so low. I know plenty of photographers who make 6-10x+ more than that. Most went to college for it. IMO the goods ones were born with a natural ability.

Where to find freelance photography jobs

There has never been more interest in becoming a photographer than there is right now. In a recently released report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for photographers is set to grow by 17% this decade. That’s more than double the rate of all job types in the U.S.

Many photographers get their start with paid work doing freelance photography jobs; some continue on to make it their full time job. Freelance photography is attractive to many for its flexibility, exposure to a wide variety of work, and autonomy.

Self-employed, self-reliant, and self-sufficient

What is a freelance photographer.

A freelance photographer is a self-employed photographer who takes on work (usually on a per-job basis), plans and performs shoots, and delivers the final product to their client. Freelancers fulfill all the roles of running a small business, from finding opportunities and writing proposals, to completing the actual photographic work and taking care of administrative duties.

As a freelancer you’re not employed by a company which takes care of sales, marketing, accounting and health care. As with many full-time photography careers, each of those functions falls on your plate.

Going freelance full-time requires a unique drive and a clear understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. Possibly the single biggest challenge when getting started is finding freelance work.

Who hires freelancers?

Since “freelance” describes basically all self-employed photographers, it is almost more a question of “Who doesn’t?” Freelance photographers are hired by just about any industry you can think of, in addition to individuals looking for genres like wedding or family portraits, or that perfect art image to adorn the walls of their home. According to data gathered by Zippia, the top three industries are media, retail and the fortune 500.

Traversing their list includes practically any shoot type you might want to try your hand at, however. With such a broad range of genres, we’re honing in on freelance work with larger companies this time around; if you fall into the wedding or portrait photography categories, don’t despair. We’ve got some great tips on how to build your photography business in the recent archives!

Making a living as a freelance photographer.

Many photographers go the freelance route. Some to supplement their income, while for others freelancing is their income.

Within our definition above, there are 3 types of work that freelance photographers seek, one of which we’ll call freelance photography jobs (or gigs). The other two are contract work and selling stock photography.

photography jobs 2022

Freelance photography

Freelance photography jobs are one-off jobs. There is no long term commitment made by either party. After a job is completed, both the freelancer and the organization which hired them go their separate ways – although, if you’ve done your job well, they’ll send more jobs or referrals your way.

There are innumerable types of freelance jobs. Consider these examples:

  • A three-day product photography job for an online retailer. The deliverables include all the RAW, unedited images (no retouching, cropping or post-processing whatsoever).
  • Attending a corporate event for 4 hours on a weekend night. The photographer is to wander and photograph attendees throughout the evening. After, select and deliver up to 75 images.
  • Meet a writer at an eclectic suburban home. Images need to be taken for both the interior and exterior of the home. The final product will accompany an article in a national publication.

Finding freelance photography jobs.

Freelance photography jobs can be found at a wide variety of sites.

Sites focused on arts, media and photography

Contract photography

Contract photography is similar to freelance work. There are two standout characteristics which separate them. First, contract work is entered upon with the intent of an ongoing relationship and multiple jobs. Second, there is a contract which defines that relationship between the photographer and the client.

Offers to do contract work for an organization generally come from an existing relationship. Yes, you might find a contract photography job listed on a job site or by word of mouth, but it wouldn’t be the normal route to this type of opportunity.

Contract work offers a higher degree of stability and lightens the load on bringing new opportunities in. The challenge is being found, recommended or recognized as a potential contract photographer.

Getting contract photography opportunities.

Traditional freelance work is often the starting point for getting ongoing contact work . Doing a great job on one freelance shoot could be the start of one of these lasting client-photographer relationships.

Putting yourself out there is a good first step toward getting contract work. Avenues to consider include:

Portfolio and self-promotion

  • Attending local photographer meet-ups
  • Keeping an up-to-date online portfolio website
  • Having (and posting to) social media profiles
  • Creating a bio on sites like Find a Photographer and Photobooker

photography jobs 2022

Stock photography

Dating back to the 1920s, stock photography has been around much longer than people realize. The name stock is derived from the one-time-fee royalty model. The purchaser pays only once for use of an image.

One distinct way that stock photography differs from other types of freelance work is that it generates passive income. Once you’ve shot, uploaded and had work accepted, money comes in over time as the work sells.

Where do you sell stock photography?

Popular stock photography sites that are front of mind include Bigstock, Creative Market, iStock and Shutterstock. For a more complete list of stock photo websites, read our in depth post on making money selling stock photos .

Tips for getting more freelance photography work

In today’s fast paced environment, finding opportunities can be challenging. Here are a few tips that can help you land new freelance work and get follow-on photography jobs.

  • Stand out from the crowd by focusing on a specific niche.
  • Have a Unique Selling Position (USP) and clearly articulate it.
  • Be timely in everything you do from inquiring about a freelance gig to returning calls and responding to emails.
  • Present yourself in a professional manner that is consistent across all the touchpoints you have with clients. Touch points include your portfolio website, online social media presence, business cards, deliverables and invoices.
  • Think of yourself as a problem solver. To create the photographic product your client needs, you first need to clearly understand what they are trying to achieve.
  • At the end of a freelance job, always ask for feedback. Whether good or bad, feedback allows you to improve. Remember, you are the business!

Fast service and amazing product photos created quickly to post online professionally

This is one of the best photo studios in the San Jose area. It is well equipped, everything in working order, and very clean. Parking is ample too. The owner will go out of his way to make sure everything is setup the way you want it. If you need technical help with a setup, he's happy to help. The studio has a number of setup options, and can turn into a bedroom, simulate window light, or use just your plain old seamless setup. I like that they do not nickel and dime you for using this equipment, and that setup, and so on.

I've been to this studio many times, both with Meetup groups and while renting it for a private shoot. The owner will go out of his way to create a set if you want it, help with lighting and provides more than adequate lights and modifiers. Meetups are always with quality models and good photographers that work well together.

Great location and very nice people! Very professional and lots of props! Definitely recommend if you want the best pictures taken professional at a very good pricing!
