Resident Evil 4 VR Doesn't Have Separate Ways Or Mercenaries

You can play as Leon Kennedy but not Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 VR.

Resident Evil 4 VR launches tomorrow , taking the classic, revolutionary 2000s shooter into uncharted territory . It's been ported a hefty amount of times now but never overhauled for a new medium entirely. However, in the transition, it has lost Mercenaries and Separate Ways , two of the unlockable extra modes.

Speaking to IGN, the spokesperson revealing the news didn't divulge why the modes were omitted, only that they won't be making an appearance. For context, The Mercenaries was unlocked by completing the Resident Evil 4 on any difficulty - the idea is that you kill as many baddies as possible in as quick a time as you can. Normal enemies award 300 points and bosses award several thousand - in essence, it's an arcade minigame.

Meanwhile, Separate Ways is a story expansion that's also unlocked by beating the main campaign. You play as Ada Wong during the events of the main story, following Albert Wesker's orders to ring the church bell. You then rescue Luis Sera, retrieve the plaga sample, and stop Leon's assassination. It's a side story that runs adjacent to Resident Evil 4, explaining what Ada was up to.

re4 vr assignment ada

Another absent extra mode is Assignment: Ada, a non-canon minigame that is - you guessed it - unlocked by beating Resident Evil 4. The plot is simple: you, playing as Ada, collect various plaga samples, and report back to Wesker.

During this segment, you report that Krauser is dead despite the main story implying his survival. It's non-canon, though, so this can be hand-waved. However, it does vaguely tease Resident Evil 5 as Wesker talks about "significant changes in our world" that are on the horizon.

While Assignment: Ada remained alongside Separate Ways in future ports, it's clear that elements of A:A inspired the story-based expansion. Nonetheless, neither are available in the VR port. You're stuck with good ol' Leon Kennedy, the emo bad boy with a mean jacket and a decent combat roll technique. Unfortunately, his fringe won't obscure half your view - talk about immersion breaking.

Resident Evil 4 VR Does Not Include Mercenaries, Other Extra Content

Assignment ada, separate ways, and the mercenaries are not available in this version..

Taylor Lyles Avatar

Resident Evil 4 VR does not include unlockable modes, including the Mercenaries and Separate Ways.

In a statement sent to IGN, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that these modes were not included in the VR version of Resident Evil 4, though did not elaborate further as to why the decision was made to cut these modes in the game. All three of these modes were available to unlock after completing Resident Evil 4's main story once.

Resident Evil 4 VR Gameplay Screenshots

re4 vr assignment ada

Assignment Ada, while non-canon in the Resident Evil lore, this game mode had players controlling Ada Wong as she tries to collect samples of the plaga for Albert Wesker. The Mercenaries Mode is an arcade-style minigame with the goal is to kill enemies and rack up a high score before time runs out. Starting with Resident Evil 4's PS2 port and onwards, the game would get a third unlockable mode called SeparateWays, where you play through the entire campaign of Resident Evil 4 through Ada's perspective.

Despite the cut modes, I noted in my review of Resident Evil 4 VR that the recent re-release offers plenty of changes to gameplay and combat make it an easy recommendation for anyone that owns an Oculus Quest 2 headset.

Resident Evil 4 VR launches October 21, exclusively for the Oculus Quest 2.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – PS5 Performance Review

Resident Evil 4 VR is Missing Some Important Game Modes

The upcoming Resident Evil VR game for Oculus Quest 2 is missing some of the unlockable game modes from the previous versions of the game.

Capcom has released Resident Evil 4 on nearly every gaming platform imaginable, and now the classic survival-horror game is making the jump to the VR space. Resident Evil 4 VR is set to launch very soon, and like other re-releases of the game, it will be making some changes. But while other Resident Evil 4 releases have enhanced the game or added new content, Resident Evil 4 VR is actually missing certain game modes.

It's been revealed by IGN that Resident Evil 4 VR is missing the unlockable game modes found in other versions of the game. This includes the Resident Evil 4 Mercenaries Mode , Assignment Ada, and Separate Ways. Assignment Ada and Mercenaries were available in the original version of Resident Evil 4 , though Separate Ways was added to the PlayStation 2 version of the game and retained in future remasters and re-releases.

RELATED: Capcom Launches Resident Evil 25th Anniversary Halloween Event

It's unclear exactly why Capcom decided to remove these unlockable modes in Resident Evil 4 VR , but it's not the only change coming in the virtual reality version of the game. It was confirmed some time ago that Resident Evil 4 VR will change voice lines , essentially censoring some of the dialogue in the game that has since been deemed inappropriate.

Screenshot from Resident Evil 4 VR showing a shotgun pointing at a female villager.

While these Resident Evil 4 VR changes may prove controversial with fans, early reviews for the game are actually quite positive. It seems most publications are in agreement that Resident Evil 4 VR is a quality virtual reality experience, and a genuinely fresh way to relive the classic. That being said, it may be difficult for those interested to actually play the game, as Resident Evil 4 VR is an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive .

What this means is that not only is Resident Evil 4 VR not available on competing virtual reality headsets like PlayStation VR, but it's not available on other Oculus platforms either. So anyone wanting to play Resident Evil 4 VR on their Oculus Rift headset or an older Oculus Quest is out of luck, unfortunately.

Knowing Capcom's penchant to port Resident Evil 4 to every platform imaginable, though, it seems highly likely that the game will make its way to other virtual reality platforms at some point down the line. Meanwhile, there may be other new ways for fans to experience Resident Evil 4 in future, as the big Capcom ransomware leak has confirmed the existence of a Resident Evil 4 remake that's expected to be out within the next couple of years or so.

Resident evil 4 vr modifies dialogue, animation, and cuts separate ways, assignment ada, and the mercenaries content.

re4 vr assignment ada

Resident Evil fans may be disappointed to learn that there are changes in the newest version of Resident Evil 4 for the Oculus Quest 2, as Resident Evil 4 VR modifies dialogue, animation, and cuts the Separate Ways, Assignment Ada, and The Mercenaries content for the game, making it less of a complete experience compared to previous releases.

In a statement released by Capcom, the modified lines pertain to segments where there was some suggestive dialogue related to Ashley Graham and spoken by Luis Sera. These were changed and removed, as well as removing the animation that lets Leon look up through Ashley’s skirt and then she reacts by calling him a pervert.

“Oculus Studios, Armature, and Capcom partnered closely to remaster Resident Evil 4 from the ground up for VR. This includes immersive environments and high-resolution graphics. It also includes select changes to in-game dialogue and animations that we believe will update Resident Evil 4 for a modern audience.”

Additionally, the bonus modes and games such as Separate Ways, Assignment Ada, and The Mercenaries have been cut from this release of RE4. The first two modes allow players to play as Ada Wong, with Separate Wats serving as a supplement to the main story and sees what happens in Ada’s perspective. The Mercenaries is an arcade style mini-game that lets you choose between five characters and surviving different areas by racking up kills and points to get the highest score possible.

As we reported before, Resident Evil 4 VR is set to be released for the Oculus Quest 2 on October 21. Check out the announcement trailer here if you missed it.

Assignment: Ada

  • Edit source
  • View history

Assignment: Ada , also known as Ada the Spy in some regions, is a non-canon minigame featured in Resident Evil 4 unlocked after completing the game.

  • 2.1 Loadout
  • 2.2 Plaga Sample locations
  • 3.1 Yellow Herbs

The minigame's plot involves Ada collecting a number of plaga samples as ordered by Albert Wesker (as opposed to collecting the single control plaga sample like in the main game). Ada does so and then reports back to Wesker that the mission was completed. She also states that Krauser was killed despite the implication that he had actually survived.

Although the plot is non-canon, it is interesting to note the ending scene has one of the biggest allusions to Resident Evil 5 in that Albert Wesker talks about "Significant changes in our world".

Gameplay [ ]

Ada wears a unique costume in the minigame which is a military-style uniform as opposed to her red dress as in the main game.

The game begins at the beginning of the island at Wharf A and ends at the Communications tower . The item layout on the map has been reworked for the minigame and pesetas and treasures are not found or used at all. The player must find the five samples of the Las Plagas parasite which are marked on the player's map. The only enemies featured are Ganado militia , Gatling Men , and Jack Krauser as the "boss" in the final area the player must defeat to get the last Plaga Sample.

The minigame is relatively short and is meant to be completed in one play-through as there are no save points during it. Ada starts the game with 6 & 2/4 Bars of health and has a slightly faster movement speed than Leon. The Plaga Samples Ada must collect take up space in the inventory instead of the Keys & Treasures menu.

Loadout [ ]

Ada begins the game with a set loadout with the default size case. In the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and the 2007 PC versions, she doesn't have a knife. In all other releases, she does. There are no other weapons to find besides Hand Grenades and ammo and the Merchant does not appear at all. Ada has the following items and firearms with the following stats;

  • Handgun Ammo x30
  • TMP Ammo x50
  • Rifle Ammo x5
  • Hand Grenade
  • First Aid Spray
  • Scope (semi-auto rifle)

Plaga Sample locations [ ]

Each Plaga Sample takes up 1x2 spaces of inventory. Due to them being mandatory in order to complete the scenario Plaga Samples are the only items in the game that cannot be discarded after putting them in the Attache Case.

Strategy [ ]

  • In the GameCube and PlayStation2 versions, Ada has no knife, so try and conserve ammo and, to open multiple crates, line them up and shoot them in one bullet using the Punisher.
  • Try to not get carried away with the Punisher's high rate of fire.
  • Single-fire the TMP when possible to conserve ammo.
  • Using The TMP full-auto is best saved to be used against shielded militia in close range, or multiple enemies, due to its high fire rate and high bullet consumption.
  • Ada's melee attacks, Fan Kick and Back Kick, are particularly useful, due to your lack of a knife, and need to conserve ammo.
  • Try to avoid Gatling Men whenever possible. They're relatively easy to flank in most presented situations, and not worth wasting ammo over, unless you are in dire need of a First Aid Spray or a Hand Grenade .
  • Krauser is really easy to beat if you do this correctly. When he appears, dodge his attacks and run to the door you originally came from. Then equip your sniper rifle. Reenter the room where Krauser is. He will charge at you from the far end of the walkway, using his plaga arm as a shield. Try and snipe his knees before he reaches you. if you do, when he staggers, try and shoot either his head or upper chest. Repeat that until he reaches you. Just before he reaches you, re-enter that door again, reload and re-enter Krauser's room again. He spawns at the very end of the catwalk. Repeat what's above until he's dead. Grenades are more risky, due to their range, but also work well too if you can time it right. Sustained TMP fire at his knees is also effective. On the Wii, Xbox Live and PSN versions, do this same tactic, but try knifing him when he drops to his knee. This is very useful in speed running, as it only takes a few slashes to defeat him.
  • Discard the Scope for the Semi-Auto Sniper since it is basically useless, this might help when collecting Plaga Samples since you need them in your Attache Case.
  • After the fight with Krauser, no more enemies appear. Anything other than the first four Plaga samples may be discarded to make space in the inventory for the final sample.

Yellow Herbs [ ]

Due to Ada's low health, Yellow Herbs are vital in order to stay alive and take more hits. There are seven in the minigame. Collecting them all raises Ada's max health from 6 & 1/2Bars to 8 1/4 Bars.

Results [ ]

There is no formal results screen displayed at the end of Assignment: Ada . However, a unique credits sequence plays consisting of cutscenes from the main game but with Leon in his Special 1 costume and Ada in her costume from The Mercenaries minigame (The R.P.D uniform and Resident Evil 2 dress respectively).

In the Gamecube version, beating the minigame will unlock the Chicago Typewriter for the main game, in all subsequent releases, however, the weapon unlocks for use in Separate Ways instead.

Resident Evil 4 VR developer on expanding Mercenaries mode and those campaign cuts

"It's the year 2022 and some of this stuff doesn't age well."

Resident Evil 4's Mercenaries mode arrives today as part of the Meta Quest 2 version of Capcom's classic, via a free update with brand new content made specifically for this VR version. The announcement came via the just-finished Meta Gaming Showcase event - and you can play the mode for yourself now, or watch our Ian try it for himself just below.

Mercenaries, a wave-based PVE mode found in several Resident Evil titles, is a fan-favourite - and not least in Resident Evil 4, where you face hordes of ganados against the clock while attempting to land a high score. But this fresh version of Mercenaries for Meta Quest 2 includes an array of new options and unlockable extras - including online leaderboards and 20 Challenges which mix up Mercenaries' gameplay in new ways.

Challenges include options which restrict gameplay to just knives or rocket launchers, or shroud the map in fog. Complete these, and you'll gain access to other all-new additions such as a Big Head Mode, speedy Fast Forward mode, and a black-and-white Classic Horror Mode for the main Resi 4 campaign.

Ahead of today's announcement, I chatted with developer Armature - specifically, executive producer Tom Ivey - about the new additions, and how the studio handled the game's original VR release. In general, its release was highly-praised - including by Eurogamer's VR aficionado Ian, who dubbed it a "wonderful way to revisit a classic" - but there was surprise among some long-term fans when it was discovered the game had trimmed dialogue in some scenes, and seemingly removed another completely .

"It's the year 2022 and some of this stuff doesn't age well," Ivey told Eurogamer in a call last week, "and it doesn't fit with the Resident Evil franchise these days. So the idea was that we're keeping every aspect of the rooms and the creatures that you fight, and the story and how it progresses and the plot points of the story. But, you know, just kind of saying it's the year 2022 - does this fit with the way that Resident Evil should be presented in this day and age? That's the concept there.

"I definitely agree with the changes we made to the game so - we're definitely on board with that, we think it's the right thing."

Cover image for YouTube video

For those who do want the original experience in Mercenaries, do not fear - the original version of the game has been preserved for those fans who only want to play that.

"All the gameplay from the original RE4, we've kind of cordoned off into one selection, which is called Classic mode," Ivey explained. "So you can play all the maps and characters, and the way that the timers work and the placement of the timers in the levels and all that is exactly the same.

"But there's also things that are fundamental changes to the rules of Mercenaries," Ivey continues. Here, instead of the usual two-minute starting clock, things get more frantic.

"There's a mode called Time Rush, which is you start with a very, very limited amount of time. And we place two timers in random locations around the map so you have to look around really quick... see that timer and think how am I going to get there while also killing guys while running to keep my combo going? And then I pick it up and I get maybe like 20 more seconds."

re4 vr assignment ada

Kill Rush, another offering, has you start with limited time that you can gain more of by killing enemies - with more time granted for headshots. Deadshot, yet another new option, inflicts damage upon you if you miss any shots you take.

With Mercenaries added, fan requests will likely now focus on the addition of another popular Resi 4 mode - the Ada Wong-starring Separate Ways. But there's no hinting from Armature on this today - for now, Ivey said Armature was still focused on Mercenaries itself.

re4 vr assignment ada

A veteran of Armature Studio, Ivey previously worked with Armature's founders at Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios. What's next for Armature after Resident Evil 4 VR? Ivey wouldn't say - but he still keeps an eye on what Retro is up to.

"I'm very excited to see what happens - I still have a ton of friends at Retro Studios working on the Metroid franchise - and also you know, at the other companies... like, Metroid Dread was a great addition to the genre and really did some interesting things and had some beautiful landscapes.

"But I don't want to forget Donkey Kong Country Returns. I hope someday there's a future where there's more of those games. I'm a big platformers guy, so I always look forward to that. And those were really good years for me and really fun years."

How Does Resident Evil 4 VR Differ From The Original?

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Gamers have a new way to experience the classic Gamecube horror title "Resident Evil 4," which has been remastered to function as an Oculus Quest 2 VR experience. While a short  trailer for the adaptation showed some remarkably recognizable gameplay, early reviews have indicated that there will be some noticeable modifications to the game.

"Resident Evil 4" was first released in 2005 and saw players once again step into the boots of Leon Kennedy , an agent tasked with rescuing the president's daughter, Ashley Graham , who has been abducted by a sinister cult. Upon its release, the title was celebrated for its fresh approach to the survival horror genre and its innovative use of the third-person perspective. As Venture Beat observed, "Resident Evil 4" "reinvented the third-person shooter," and its over-the-shoulder viewpoint would soon be seen in some of the most important games of the 2000s, such as "Gears of War" and "Mass Effect."

Translating "Resident Evil 4" to a VR setting required moving the game into the first-person, which will be a significant shift for players to adjust to. However, the developers have made adjustments to other aspects of the game, ranging from visual improvements to modified dialogue. Here is how "Resident Evil 4 VR" is different from the original.

Resident Evil 4 includes modified controls to accommodate VR

While critics have generally reacted favorably to "Resident Evil 4 VR," it is worth noting that the new format has necessitated specific changes. The most obvious of these is the game's new first-person viewpoint, which alters the player's perspective for some key moments, but does allow for a new appreciation of Leon's signature fingerless gloves .

Upload VR documented some of these changes in their glowing review of the game and noted that "the content of the game might be the same, but actually playing it is a fundamentally different experience." For instance, managing the player's equipped items has been modified by making weapon changes movement-based instead of requiring navigation through the original game's sometimes clunky inventory screen.

However, perhaps more significantly, "Resident Evil 4 VR" has added functionality that was absent in the original, such as the ability to move in a sideways motion instead of only allowing Leon to move forward or backward depending on the current camera angle. Upload VR explained that many of these changes feel natural for the VR setting, but it does have the effect of making "Resident Evil 4" feel "fundamentally easier than it ever has."

While these changes may help the game adapt to a first-person virtual reality perspective, dedicated "Resident Evil 4" fans may find them off-putting. If that is the case, Upload VR noted that there is an option to disable them.

Popular Resident Evil 4 game modes have been removed from the VR edition

While some of the alterations to the control scheme of "Resident Evil 4 VR" can be seen as adding functionality, other changes have removed parts of the game that veteran players may have been expecting. IGN reported that the Oculus Quest 2 adaptation of "Resident Evil 4" arrives without some of the additional game modes included in the original.

These missing modes include Separate Ways, The Mercenaries, and Assignment: Ada. The Mercenaries , unlocked initially by completing the game's primary storyline, turned the deliberate survival horror title into a points-based shooter. In Assignment: Ada , which IGN notes is a non-canon part of the "Resident Evil" story , gamers had a chance to play as Ada Wong while collecting plaga samples for analysis.

Separate Ways was not a part of the original "Resident Evil 4" but was added to the game when it was first ported from the GameCube onto the PlayStation 2. This mode also focused on Ada Wong and allowed the player to navigate through the entire single-player campaign while controlling the enigmatic spy.

Resident Evil 4 VR alters some questionable dialogue and scenes

As reported by Bounding Into Comics , "Resident Evil 4 VR" has cut certain scenes that might be deemed offensive. These include lines of dialogue that reference parts of the character Ashley Graham's body, some interactions between Leon and his contact at F.O.S., Ingrid Hannigan , and some suggestive animations.

A statement provided to IGN by a Facebook spokesperson read that the changes to the dialogue and select animations were made to "update 'Resident Evil 4' for a modern audience." While some fans have found these changes to be upsetting, IGN saw them to be within the acceptable bounds of good taste, writing "Ogling Ashley isn't really a core part of the 'Resident Evil 4' experience so it's hard to say that this substantially changes the game."

The changes to the in-game dialogue between Leon and Ingrid are also subtle and likely only noticeable upon close comparison. In general, some of the more overt advances Leon makes are covered by static, and The Verge noted in their positive review of the game that "the developers have removed a few (honestly cringeworthy and missable) lines from the cutscenes."

Resident Evil 4 Remake VR And Story DLC Detailed

Today, during Sony's recent State of Play livestream, we got a look at both the upcoming PSVR2 update and story DLC for the Resident Evil 4 Remake.

The VR trailer is brief but does show the game in action. Much like the  other  VR port of RE4 , the move brings the whole game into virtual reality. The big news is that the update is coming this winter.

More immediately, we finally got confirmation that "Separate Ways" is coming to RE4. For the uninitiated, Separate Ways was a side campaign starring, you guessed it, Ada Wong, initially released with the PlayStation 2 and all subsequent versions of the original Resident Evil 4. Separate Ways will be released next week, on September 21.

Moreover, Both Ada Wong and Albert Wesker will be made available as playable characters in the Mercenaries game mode.

For more Resident Evil 4 Remake, check out our review .

Correction:  An earlier version of this story mistakenly identified "Separate Ways" as "Assignment Ada." We regret the error.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance:

Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance: "Metro after Kaganovich."

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

Kropotkinskaya station, our days. Letters on the entrance:

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
