Apple Kills Its Electric Car Project

Apple has canceled its plans to release an electric car with self-driving abilities, a secretive product that had been in the works for nearly a decade .

The company told employees in an internal meeting on Tuesday that it had scrapped the project and that members of the group would be shifted to different roles, including in Apple’s artificial intelligence division, according to a person briefed on the discussion, who requested anonymity because the announcement was not public.

As part of the restructuring, Kevin Lynch, an executive who had been involved in the car project, will report to John Giannandrea, the company’s head of artificial intelligence strategy, the person said.

Apple declined to comment. The news that Apple was ending its car plan was reported earlier by Bloomberg.

Though Apple had not unveiled its car to consumers, the product had for many years been one of Silicon Valley’s worst-kept secrets because it was being tested on public roads. The cancellation is a rare move by Apple, which typically doesn’t shelve such public and high-profile projects.

The company has struggled in recent years to find new avenues for growth as its all-important iPhone has saturated the market and people are upgrading their phones less frequently than they used to.

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, has publicly hinted that Apple was interested in entering the car space. The company had also been testing hundreds of vehicles equipped with autonomous driving technology in public for many years. The car, internally code-named Titan and Project 172, was a challenging product to develop, as parts of the division were shuttered , plans were scrapped and restarted, and dozens of workers were laid off along the way.

The car, which Apple spent billions of dollars researching, had been intended as a rival to Tesla’s electric vehicles, which include autonomous driving features.

The product was important for Mr. Cook’s legacy as it would have countered the perception that Apple had lost its ability to innovate and come up with the next big thing. Under Mr. Cook’s leadership, the company has introduced a small number of new hardware products, including the Apple Watch , which now leads the smart watch market; the HomePod smart speaker, which flopped; and the Vision Pro, the $3,500 goggles that it released this month to rival Meta’s virtual reality headsets.

The company has invested heavily on developing new technologies. In the last five years, it spent $113 billion on research and development.

How It All Began

The history of Moscow-City goes all the way back to 1992. The government of Moscow at the time wanted to bring into existence its own skyscrapers like the ones in London or New York. And the idea caught on. In 1992 the project for the construction of the huge “Moscow-City” MIBC compound was enthusiastically approved, kick-starting the painstaking preparatory works. The original intention was that the skyscrapers would only house office space. However, as time went on, the towers began to welcome in ordinary residents who wanted to live on the territory of this business and finance hub.

Moscow-City is undoubtedly a city within a city. Its grandeur is mind-boggling. It is perfect in every way: from location to infrastructure. The aboveground part houses a concert hall and a hotel.

Tower 2000 is a skyscraper having 34 stories. Its total floor area is 200 318 sqft (61 057 m²), most of which is office space. The key feature of this skyscraper is its direct connection to the Bagration Bridge, which has its own shopping arcade. The tower has everything one may need while working here, including a large parking lot and several restaurants.

Evolution Tower

This elegant structure is 836 feet (255 m) high – that’s a whole 54 stories! The total floor area here is 554 462 sqft (169 000 m²). The Evolution Tower’s key feature is that it has its own Wedding Hall. This skyscraper houses large office spaces, a parking lot and several restaurants.

Imperia Tower

MIBC’s Imperia Tower is the undeniable focal point of the MIBC’s business life. Its height is 784 feet (239 m), which means one can hold conferences and resolve key business matters on the 59 th floor! And that really is amazing! The tower has everything: offices, hotels, restaurants and parking lots. But if you want a truly unforgettable experience, visit the viewing platform! The Moscow and St. Petersburg Towers are the chief representatives of the MIBC. The Moscow Tower has 76 stories and is 990 feet (302 m) high, while the St. Petersburg Tower has 65 stories and stands 843 feet (257 m) tall. Both towers offer fantastic views of the capital city.

Most of the floors of these two skyscrapers are taken up by luxurious sky apartments. There are also several recreational and entertainment centers, office spaces, restaurants, etc.

Steel Peak Tower

Also known as the Eurasia Tower of Moscow-City, this supertall skyscraper has a total of 680 912 sqft (207 542 m²) of floor space. Most of this is taken up by offices, and the rest – by residential quarters (around 65 616 sqft or 20 000 m²). The tower also houses a number of the greatest restaurants, studios and shopping centers.

Federation Tower

The Federation Tower is a complex of two skyscrapers, known as Tower East and Tower West. Tower East is the second highest building in Europe (the first is a skyscraper recently erected in the city of St. Petersburg). Its height is a colossal 1 223 feet (373 m) and that makes 95 stories! Tower West, on the other hand, is noticeably shorter at 794 feet (242 m).

The Federation Tower is a multifunctional complex.

Mercury City Tower

The Mercury City Tower skyscraper is widely known as one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Its height is 1 112 feet (339 m) and it has 75 stories. It is multifunctional by concept, holding within its walls shopping centers, offices and all kinds of other spaces. It is also possible to rent apartments here.

OKO Tower Complex

The OKO Tower Complex consists of two towers – the North Tower (49 stories and 803 ft or 245 m in height) and the South Tower (85 stories and 1 155 ft or 352 m in height).

Each of the MIBC’s tower complexes has its own recreational and entertainment areas, restaurants and parking lots. The top floors of most of these buildings contain luxurious fully-furnished apartments. What Not to Miss

There are many interesting landmarks within the Moscow-City compound, but three of them are truly deserving of special attention:

  • The Expocentre Fairgrounds.

Afimall City Shopping Center

The Afimall City Shopping and Entertainment Center is located in Moscow-City’s Central Core. It is divided into 4 zones, each with its own theme – one for every season of the year. The shopping center houses the biggest indoor fountain found worldwide. The height of this watery wonder is 118 feet or 36 meters.

The shopping and entertainment center contains everything one might expect from one of the largest centers of its kind:

  • Retail brand stores;
  • Exhibitions;
  • Game rooms;
  • and Restaurants.

The main recreational space is roofed with a giant transparent dome, which is an impressive sight to behold.

Bagration Bridge

Bagration Bridge with its upper and lower galleries has a shopping center all of its own and was the first structure to be built as part of the Moscow-City business district. Its lower gallery is a shopping arcade and its upper gallery is an open-air viewing platform with a spectacular view of the MIBC and the Moskva River. The hall of the bridge houses the 23 foot tall sculpture called “Tree of Life”. Having gone through the bridge via either one of its two galleries, a pedestrian would find themselves standing right on the Kutuzovsky Prospekt.

Expocentre Fairgrounds

The Expocentre Fairgrounds exhibition venue is located at the very heart of the capital. The first exhibition held at the Expocentre happened all the way back in 1959, much earlier than the MIBC was erected. Today it is the venue of many interesting events.

Exhibitions with very diverse themes are regularly held at this complex. An up-to-date schedule can be found on the official webpage of the Expocentre. The events can be free or fixed-price entry, depending on their type.

Renting and Buying Real Estate in Moscow-City

This complex, standing on a faceted or “crystal” base, is an architectural engineering project boasting spectacular design. Behind its impressive façades is an abundance of penthouses and apartments having floor areas in the range of 262 sqft (80 m²) to 984 sqft (300 m²). The minimum price of an apartment in the OKO Tower Complex is 40 million rubles (the price of a square meter (3.28 square feet) is 500 thousand rubles). City of Capitals

The City of Capitals is an exemplary architectural complex. Its sum appearance gives the impression of a huge city. Inside its walls are spacious apartments available for purchase and rent. Buses, Streetcars, and Trolleybuses

Moscow's public land transport network covers the entirety of the city: buses and streetcars arrive with the same frequency as metro trains, and many routes connect the city's center and its outskirts. A system of night buses operates daily between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., running from the Kitay-Gorod metro station on thirteen routes to various Moscow districts (as well as to Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports). There is also a tourist trolleybus route from Komsomolskaya Square to Novoryazanskaya Street. You can pay for public land transport rides with the Troika card or buy a ticket directly from the driver. For an easier way to plan out your route and find out the timetable, use the Moscow Transport app or mobile maps.

River Transport

The navigation season on the Moskva River begins in mid-April and ends in late fall. Throughout this period, you can see motorships running along the river. Almost any route is suitable for a cruise, with the ships circling around the city center and going to the North River Terminal and the Kolomenskoye Park embankment. It is best to book tours in advance (there are several different companies to choose from). Payment options depend on the type of the tour.

There is only one regular river route in Moscow, and it goes from the North River Terminal to Khimki. The ticket price is 350 rubles, but in the morning and evening hours you can pay with a Troika card at the standard fare.

Commuter Trains

Trains run in eleven directions from nine Moscow railway stations. Most often, commuter trains are used to travel out of town or to dachas, but they also serve to connect certain districts and metro stations, as well as help prevent the metro from overcrowding during rush hours. High-speed trains, also known as Aeroexpress trains, connect Moscow airports with the city center. You can find diagrams of the railway lines on the website of the Central Suburban Passenger Company. Although normal rail tickets can only be purchased at the box office, you can buy Aeroexpress tickets in advance on the website or using the mobile app.

Mercedes Benz ditches plan to sell only EVs by 2030

  • Mercedes-Benz  said in 2021 it planned to be all-electric by 2030.
  • The carmaker walked back that goal during an earnings call this week, however. 
  • A Q4 statement from Mercedes says EV sales in 2030 will be more like 50% of its fleet.

It looks like Mercedes-Benz won't live up to its goal to be all-electric by 2030.

In 2021, the German carmaker announced plans only to sell electric vehicles — "where market conditions allow" — by 2030. It now seems that market conditions aren't going to allow that.

In its fourth quarter statement released Thursday, the company said it would allow customers' demands to "set the pace" for how much of its fleet will be electric or gas. And, as of Thursday's release, it expects its overall EV sales to reach just 50% by the time 2030 rolls around.

During a September interview at the Munich car show, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius first hinted at a more narrow outlook for the EV market.

"It's not going to be 100% in 2030, obviously... from the whole European market, but probably from the Mercedes side as well," he said, according to Reuters .

Mercedes expects its EV sales to account for about 19% to 21% of new car sales this year.

Mercedes isn't the only automaker that is reevaluating its EV plans. Consumer demand for EVs has cooled as shoppers look for more affordable options and struggle with the lifestyle changes required to own a car that needs charging.

EV owners said that finding public chargers that work can be hard, especially on long road trips. And at home, expensive electricity rates make home charging a costlier solution than automakers first imagined.

"This is a pretty brutal space," Harald Wilhelm, the chief financial officer of Mercedes-Benz, told analysts in 2023. "I can hardly imagine the current status quo is fully sustainable for everybody."
