12th Policy Dialogue Forum of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030

international task force on teachers for education 2030

On 8-11 December 2019, UNESCO Beirut, represented by its Programme Specialist of Teachers and Curriculum Development, Dr Dakmara Georgescu, took part in the 12th Edition of the International Task Force on Teachers (TTF) Policy Dialogue Forum held in Dubai, U.A.E.. Focusing on the futures of teachers and of the teaching profession, this Policy Dialogue Forum brought together more than 400 education specialists and stakeholders from all over the world to discuss issues related to teachers and teacher education in the 21st Century, and means to address inequalities and promote innovations.

The highly interactive plenary sessions, roundtables and thematic meetings (including side events) have provided the backdrop against which important issues have been tackled pertaining to (re)shaping the vision of future teachers and teaching in the 21st century. Reports of such discussions as well as the Dubai Final Statement are among the concrete outputs to further feed deliberations on follow up and policy needed to put this shared vision on teachers into practice.

Some key thematic meetings have brought together deans of education delving into teacher professional development (especially initial teacher training/TT); professionals working on Teacher Management in Crisis and Emergencies (EiE); and teacher specialists, teachers and other stakeholders exploring innovations in teaching approaches (such as by using ICTs in education and AI) and how to address inequalities.

In addition to contributing to the forum’s main activities, UNESCO Beirut managed two important side meetings. The first one, held on 9 December 2019, was organized as a closed focus group of long-term UNESCO education consultants on “Futures of Education”. The focus group outcomes will contribute to feeding the deliberations of UNESCO’s High-level Commission on “Futures of Education” that will first meet in January 2020. The second side event, held on 10 December 2019,  focused on reviewing the Ed-Align Toolkit in the context of the joint UNESCO Beirut, UNESCO/ED/ESC/TED and UNESCO Dakar inter-regional initiative launched back in November 2018 on aligning curriculum/learning, teacher policies and practices and assessment in order to reach SDG4 targets.

The Ed-Align Toolkit that is being currently developed by a core group of UNESCO consultants and stakeholders is an integral part of the Road Map participants in the Ed-Align inter-regional workshop in Beirut on 17-19 June 2019 agreed upon. The Road Map included both UNESCO-driven actions in support of Member States, as well as actions at national and Regional levels to enhance educational alignment in the context of implementing Education Agenda 2030.

As a follow up of the Dubai TTF Policy Forum of December 2019 and its side-meeting deliberations on the Ed-Align Toolkit, further consultations with Member States will be organized in 2020 in the context of inter-regional Arab-Africa meetings. Such events will be also utilized as dissemination platforms of the Dubai TTF Policy Forum advocacy messages on supporting young teachers and the teachers of the future.
