How to Apply to Modeling Agencies

Freelance models can have solid careers, but signing with an agency gives you even more stability and access to castings. Get the attention of an established agency by sending in your full modeling portfolio. This “book” should include your best photos along with some general background information. After you've sent in your portfolio, make additional connections by attending open casting calls. Keep pushing until you've achieved your modeling dream.

Creating a Portfolio

Step 1 Use amateur photos.

  • Pose for a large number of shots, at least twenty, so that you'll have plenty to choose from. Out of these photos, you'll need to select between six to twenty images to include in your final portfolio. You'll need a wide range of photos, including at least one head shot.
  • Avoid having anything distracting in the background of your photos, such as random household objects. For example, it's better to stand in front of a blank wall instead of one filled with framed portraits.
  • If you've done professional freelance modeling work in the past, you may need to get permission from the photographer or client to use these photos. Once you have this permission, go ahead and include those shots in your portfolio.

Step 2 Attach a video.

  • Get your photos printed on good photo paper as well. It's probably best to take them to a photo shop to be printed, instead of doing it at home.
  • If your portfolio is digital, you can maximize photo quality by using a camera set to the highest pixel level with the least compression. You can also spend some time editing your images using professional software, such as Photoshop.

Step 5 Include some headshots.

  • A good general rule is to include more smiling shots if you are looking for commercial work.
  • Use the least amount of make-up that you are comfortable with. This could mean just applying a bit of concealer, light powder, mascara, or lipstick. The recruiters will want to see the condition of your skin.

  • Again, don't feel as if you have to wear super fancy or high-fashion outfits in every shot. It's better to keep it basic, so recruiters can see your potential. Go with solid colors and simple prints. Only wear one 'statement' item at a time, such as a unique piece of jewelry.
  • For example, if you are apple-shaped, then draw attention upwards by wearing an interesting necklace or turtleneck. Or, if you have an hourglass figure, cinch in your waist with a fashionable belt.

Submitting Your Application

Step 1 Target a market that fits your look.

  • Agencies of all sizes are usually actively recruiting for new models throughout the year. If you work with a smaller agency, you may get more personal attention. But, a larger agency may be able to provide more consistent work. [10] X Research source

Step 3 Look up agency submission details.

  • Do not include all of your rejected or “extra” images within your binder.
  • Keep your cover letter short and to the point. Introduce yourself, explain your interest in modeling, and tell them what you've sent along. For example, you might write, “I started my freelance modeling career at the age of six, but would like the consistency of working with an agency.”
  • 6 Schedule an in-person interview. If the agency looks through your portfolio and is interested, then they will likely call you with the offer of an in-person interview. That is why it's best to apply to agencies locally unless you are willing to travel. Finding Modeling Work in Other Ways

Step 1 Build up your online following.

  • Create additional connections by commenting on the posts of other models and responding to comments posted on your page.

Step 2 Go to an open casting call.

  • This is a great opportunity to give casting agents a taste of your unique personality and to make a memorable impression. For example, you might show them a (flattering) photo from one of your recent hiking adventures.

Finding the best modeling agency for you is a very subjective matter. An agency that might be a great fit for one person may be totally the wrong agency for another. So, it’s important that you do your research before you even approach an agency.

A quick google search for “ modeling agencies in (insert town/city)” will quickly allow you to find out who your local agencies are and what kinds of modeling talent they are after. It is important to remember that not all agencies cover all kinds of modeling and while a lot are set up to bring on brand new talent some agencies only deal with established models.

Guide to Reaching Out to Modeling Agencies

So much of photography is built on social relationships. Models, makeup artists, hair stylists, designers, and assistants all play a crucial role in contributing to the creation of an image. At the center of the photographer's work is the model, yet photographers may find it difficult to reach out to modeling agencies for collaboration. This article will describe some best practices to start and maintain relationships with modeling agencies and their models that may enable you to further develop your portfolio.

It can be intimidating for new photographers to approach models for collaboration, but there are several online resources to help with that initial nudge. Before you feel comfortable reaching out to modeling agencies, it makes sense to use sites such as Model Mayhem, Facebook, and Instagram to start finding models who want to build their portfolios. When you’re ready to start building a professional portfolio though, you’ll want to start working with professional models, which can generally be accessed through modeling agencies.

Sections of models will be located in different areas of modeling agency websites. You will generally find a "new faces" tab on these sites, describing new models looking to expand and update their portfolio. In some ways, they may be in the same boat as you. These models will be the most accessible for test photoshoots (unpaid shoots that are for the purpose of portfolio building). On the other hand, models on the main pages of the agency site, who have developed portfolios and are likely already booking paid work, will be more difficult to book for test shoots.

When reaching out to agencies, it is best to start with an email that clearly, concisely states your intention. Keep in mind that photographers looking to test email agencies all the time. Remember to be detailed, concise, and polite. Let's look at some well-written emails from professional photographers to modeling agencies to see what we can learn.

From these two examples written by professional photographers we can begin to put together a list of important elements of a well-written email.

Deconstructing These Emails

  • Introduction and self-pitch
  • References to your work
  • Specifics and purpose of email (your request)
  • Availability
  • Ending note

Before making contact, you should know why you are reaching out to a particular agency. That is to say, are you about to engage in a mutually beneficial relationship for yourself and the agency? Make sure that your photography will match the aesthetic of the agency. Photographer and assistant booker at Found Model Management, Gail Shamon , took some time to talk with me about her experience with photographers reaching out to her agency to test, “As a booker, I always appreciate good shooters who make a point to specifically address the needs of the agency and the needs of newer models who’s books need further development.”

Once you’ve found the right agency, and the agency agrees to a test shoot, they’ll more than likely send you a PDF package, which generally includes about six models. When you’ve selected the model who best fits your vision, ask if they’re available.

Once you have a model you want to work with, it's a good idea to start with the model release form, which ensures you are able to legally publish images of your model on your website, blog, or for any marketing materials. It's a good practice to always carry release forms in a folder in a bag you take to a photoshoot. You can find several free model release templates online to download and print. Once signed, for added security, you can scan the form and save in the cloud (Google Docs, Dropbox, etc.). Or, if you're looking to save paper, free apps provide model releases with e-signature options.

Your relationship with the modeling agency doesn't end after the shoot. If you want to continue a relationship, make sure to deliver the final edited images (or images to select edits from) to your original contact at the agency. Remember best practices here: show your appreciation; be thankful. As your relationship with an agency grows, you will be able to access more experienced models, who will help you develop your vision as well as your portfolio. Practicing with these tips in mind will help you do just that.

Although I have been fortunate enough that a model reached out to me from an agency, I would love to shoot different faces in the future and will definitely keep in mind the email suggestions! I have never even considered to reach out to an agency before because it seems really intimidating!

I myself am fairly new to reaching out to agencies for the same reason! The thought of it alone was scary. However I encourage you to do it and be persistent! My best piece of advice is to give them the details as best as possible and include a mood board as well so they know you mean serious business. Also, don't be afraid to email multiple agencies! Some might not respond but persistence and patience will get you there.

It's nice to see some written examples from other photographers. I haven't had much luck with agencies myself. Usually I get no reply. There is one small agency that I have done a few shoots for but I contacted the models directly. I prefer to cut out the middle man if I can at all.

Hi Emily, I use the standard Getty release when shooting. I book models directly from photography studios, professional dancers, IG and other sources.South Florida is wonderful for this. But I thought that if I were to work with an Agency, they would provide their form of release spelling out specifically the conditions under which they would work with me. Was I incorrect in this assumption? Thank you.

Hi Joe! Some agencies do have their own release forms, but it's not necessarily the norm. From all the agencies I've worked with, I've never received one.

Model Release to me means you have material rights to sell an image, which in test shoots with agencies never happens (they wont give it for free), unless you pay for it. Test shoots are only for portfolios, and they usually don't need Model Release form as it's only use is to promote photographer/model/team involved only?

To succeed, models often have to be scouted and recruited by modelling agencies.

The reason why most models end up working for modelling agencies is that, as an aspiring model, one is often short of cash and without networks to provide a stepping stone for their modelling career.

To be a world-famous model, one has to be featured in fashion magazines the likes of Vogue and GQ, they have to participate in the biggest fashion runway show, like the big four fashion weeks that happen in New York, London, Paris and Milan.

Achieving all these requires a tone of advertising.

Something only the biggest modelling agencies can provide by listing models signed to them on their website.

These websites get hundreds of thousands of views from brands every month.

How Much Do Model Agencies Pay Models

In exchange for listing models on their website and negotiating fees with brands, model agencies typically charge models a percentage of the fee they are paid by brands.

If a brand wants to hire a model, typically 20 to 25% of the agreed fees go to the model’s agency.

In addition to this, some model agencies charge models a one-time fee for being listed on the model agency’s website.

This fee is often paid if the said model got a gig in said duration.

Can A Model Succeed Without A Modeling Agency?

Yes, a model can succeed without being represented by a model agency. However, this rarely happens.

You have to understand that over the years, model agencies have garnered a lot of networks and an in-depth understanding of the industry.

Succeeding by going solo would require a lot of financial investment on the part of the individual, something most people don’t have.

However, with the growth of social media, it is possible to grow an enormous following on Instagram for example and charge brands directly to work on their campaigns.

A good example of a model or famous personality who continues to do this with huge success is Kim Kardashian.

To conclude, modelling agencies are most often the gatekeepers in what is a massively competitive and rewarding career.

APPLYING TO MODELING AGENCIES

Modeling agencies are businesses or companies whose sole purpose is to act as model/talent managers. Different modeling agencies offer different services and opportunities to models.

A training agency is like an academy, they focus on preparing aspiring models for the market. A mother agency signs models with the main aim of developing their talent and placing them in different markets. The mother agency scouts, trains, and prepares models for the booking agencies. Booking agencies are established agencies with very good clientele in developed markets, think, Elite Model Management, or Wilhelmina Models.

HOW MODELING AGENCIES WORK

A modeling agency is a business, it, therefore, must have an income stream; so how do modeling agencies make money?

Modeling agencies strive to get work for models that are signed by them, charging a commission ranging from 10-30% (depending on the market) from the model’s payment. Why do they do this? The agency has spent time and resources to scout, train, prepare and find work for the model. This process involves a model scout, a trainer, a manager, and a booker, all of whom have to be paid for their services.

Modeling agencies will sign models who have a lot of potential of getting booked by their clients. You can be a good model, but not for a certain agency because they do not see any of their clients booking you. Rejection is part and parcel of the process, expect it and don’t take it personally.

Applying to modeling agencies needs you to do the following:

1. RESEARCH

There are numerous modeling agencies in the world and in Kenya, finding the right one will take a bit of research and consultation. Start by writing down what type of modeling you want to do and where you want to go with your modeling career. ( If you do not know the types of modeling, purchase our Beginners Guide )

The next step is to search for modeling agencies near you. Most credible modeling agencies will be listed on google, from this listing, you can access their website and social media handles. Visit their website or social media handles, look at the services they offer against where you are in your career and where you want to go.

Some agencies tag their models on the photos they post, approach one or two models, and ask them about how their experience in the agency has been. This will help you narrow down the agencies you may want to work with, based on work ethic and the number of models they have already signed.

Lastly, find out the application process. Different agencies have different calendars, some agencies cast throughout the year while others in specific months. Some agencies prefer online application while others prefer to cast physically. This is purely based on the business model and or company preference. This information will always be on the website.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Many agencies that are constantly scouting for fresh faces, use this method. On the menu bar, will be a “GET SCOUTED” link, which when clicked presents an application form. Go through the requirements, making sure you have the right attachments before you start filling in the form.

Following instructions and being honest is a form of self-respect. Do not lie on the application forms, especially about your height and measurements. Many agencies will ask for polaroid images, ensure you have good images. Applying to a modeling agency is like applying for a job, the requirements might be different, the professionalism should be the same. (To learn more about polaroid images, click here )

EMAIL APPLICATION

This is common with agencies that have a casting on specific months and require models to apply online prior to physical casting. Casting information is always on the agency’s website, and where an agency does not have a website it is imperative that you send an email.

Your application email should be professional. Ensure you have the subject section filled in, introduce yourself and submit your polaroid images (5 maximum). Avoid sending DM’s or WhatsApp messages unless an agency has indicated these platforms as official communication channels. Ensure to send your email within working hours. Feedback from agencies can take between 3 to 7 working days.

These are most common in Kenya. Many modeling agencies prefer this as a casting method because they get a chance to interact with the talent. Channel 4, M&S and Zebedee Talent hit the catwalk to introduce the New Model Agency

Channel 4, in association with M&S, has commissioned Manchester-based Salamanda Media to make New Model Agency , a new and fast-paced ob-doc series offering a fresh insight into the compelling world of fashion. The series follows a young, diverse and dynamic cast of models represented by inclusive model agency Zebedee Talent. M&S used Mindshare, which holds M&S’ media account, to advise on the series partnership.

Over three energetic and feisty episodes, we get to know the cast as they work hard and hustle to make their mark in the industry and compete at castings to land lucrative campaigns with brands such as Fred Perry and Tommy Hilfiger. Cameras follow 21-year-old Jasroop as she lands her dream job in Venice, only to discover the reality isn’t quite what she expected, while Zebedee's rising star, student Shem, has his eyes set firmly on walking at London Fashion Week.

Thirty-seven-year-old army veteran Dan gets the chance of a big break with an international brand and some of the cast are invited by M&S to star in the retailer’s Bra Fit campaign - a celebration of all body types, boob shapes and sizes - but will any of the Zebedee models land this career-making opportunity?

New Model Agency is a 3x60’ series made by Salamanda Media.
