VFX Tutorials – Paint / Prep

VFX Tutorials – Paint / Prep:

What is VFX Paint?

Paint as required to remove unwanted artifacts, reconstruct a background or digitally correct a render or composite.

Used software

  • Adobe Photoshop (image editing)
  • Nuke (video editing &compositing)

Using file type

  • Digital Picture Exchange ( DPX ):

It is a common file format for digital intermediate and visual effects work and is ANSI standard. File format is normally protected by taking a picture scanner with the original camera negative in a “logactimic” image not used to represent a scanned negative image density. For this reason, this is a universally selected design for more digital storage in most digital intermediate post production facilities and film labs. Other common video formats support the entire digital video from the video, the DPX will generate a file format suitable for virtually any raster digital imaging applications. In fact, it provides flexibility to exchange color information, color spaces and color storage facilities. Many forms of baking and alignment are possible. DPX notes allow different types of metadata to further clear the saved (and static) information in each file. The DPX file format was originally derived from the Open File Format of the Kodak Cinemas (Cin File Extension) used for digital images created by Codax’s original film scanner. Original DPX (version 1.0) specifications are part of SMPTE. This specification was later updated and its latest version (2.0) was released by SMPTE as ANSI / SMPTE 268M-2003.

DPX File Format Summary

Open EXR is a highly dynamic race raster file format, released as an open standard with software tools created by Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), under a free software license such as the BSD license. This is significant in support of multiple channels in various pixel sizes including 64-, 32- and 16-bit floating point values, and various compression strategies that include loss and loss compression algorithms. It marks many features such as arbitrary channels and left and right-camera images.

  3.JEPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPG is a file extension for a loss graphics file. The JPEG file extension is used as an alternative to JPG. JPEG is a group of collective photographers who have created the standard. JPG files have 2 sub formats, JPG / Exif (often used in digital cameras and photo tools) and JPG / JFIF (often used on the World Wide Web).

The JPEG specifies the standard codec, which defines how a picture is narrowed in the flow of bytes and once again re-distorts a picture, but the stream is not a file format. Exif and JFIF standards define commonly used shapes for JPEG-compressed images

A JPG file contains an array sequence, each starts with a marker, each starts with 0xFF bytes, and then a model indicates what marker is. Some markers are only two bytes; Others are two bytes that indicate the length of the marker-specific payload data

4.PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

The patent of GIF is owned by an organization and is designed as an open forum for changing GIF since anyone else does not want to pay a license fee. It allows a full color color and excellent contraction

5.Tiff  (Tagged Image Format File)

TIF is a high quality graphics image file. TIF files were scanned in 1986 as a file format, all companies attempted to use a standard file format instead of multiple times.

  Adobe Photoshop

This is layer based application, here is the below steps how to use in VFX Paint.

Import sequence file

  Follow the below steps

  • Open Photoshop select file& click open
  • Select folder path .ex. D:\paint\project\shot code
  • selectone image then tick image sequence now open
  • Next change Frame rate as 24 fps
  • Now has go to timeline change time to frame (press alt+right click on mouse)
  • Ungroup layer shown as below image
  • Create new blank work layer

Clean Plate Definition:

A clean plate usually refers to the subjects that you want to remove or change in the main meaning or shoot of the background shot. Make sure the background is not damaged, we only need to remove the items and keep it in the RGB

Below images example to remove objects

Sequence plate definition:

The top frame of the single frame is followed by more than one frame, while the pure plate is called. The background (RGB) animation should be blurred when using the character movement and display.

Timeline Animation Workflow

Set up keyframes in the timeline panel, change the layer content in timeline mode, change the current time indicator to another time / frame, and then change the position of the position, opacity, or layer content. Photoshop automatically add or modify a series of frames between two frames-layer properties (position, opacity and style) to distinguish between the new features or the movement or transformation of the image.

For example, if you want to exit a layer, set the opacity of up to 100% layers in the start frame and click on the Opticis stopwatch for the layer. Then set the deadline target for the timeframe and set the illumination to 0% for the same layer. Photoshop automatically interpolates the frames between start and end frames, and the layer opacity is reduced evenly across new frames.

In addition to not having Photoshop interpolation frames in an animation, you can create a hand-drawn frame-frame animation with a blank video layer

If you want to create an SWF form animation, use Adobe Flash, Adobe After Effects, or Adobe Illustrator.

To create a timeline-based animation, use the following general workflow.

  • Create a new document.

Specify the size and background contents. Make sure the pixel rate and dimensions are relevant to your animated release. Color must be RGB. If you do not have special reasons to make changes, leave the resolution at 72 pixels / inches, at 8 bpc bit depth and square per pixel ratio. Make sure the timeline panel is open. If necessary, click the down arrow in the middle of the group, create a video timeline from the menu, and click the button on the left hand side of the arrow. If the timeline panel is in the frame animation mode, click to change the video in the lower-left corner of the panel.

  • Specify the Set Timeline Frame Rate in the panel menu.

Specify the duration and frame rate. Below

Video and Animation Overview:

For Photoshop publishing before Photoshop CC, some activities discussed in this article are available only if Photoshop is expanded. Photoshop CC does not have a separate extension offering. All features of Photoshop are part of the expanded Photoshop CC

About video layers

You can use Photoshop to edit individual frames for video and image sequence files. In addition to using any Photoshop tool, you can use filters, masks, changes, layers styles, and mixed modes to edit and color the video. After making edits, save the document as a PSD file (Premier Braun can then be accessed as a standard file after effects or other applications), or you can provide it as a QuickTime movie or image sequence.

You can only display images in a video file, not audio. When a video file or image array opens in Photoshop, the frames are contained within a video layer. In the layers panel, a video layer is identified with a screen shot of the emblem.Video layers allow you to lock and clone color in individual frames using brush tools and stamp tools. As you work with conventional layers, you can make choices or control masks to control your edits for specific parts of a frame. Navigate through frames using the timeline in the animated panel (window> animation).

Video layers will not work when the animation team is in frame mode.

By adjusting the hybrid mode, opacity, position and layer style, you work with video layers like conventional layers. You can group video layers in the Layers panel. Stack layers allow you to use changes to the video layers that cannot be destroyed

If you want to make edits in your Premier Layer, you can create a blank video layer. Empty video layers allow you to create hand-drawn animations.

A video layer refers to the original file, so edits in the video layer do not change the original video or image file. To maintain the original file link, make sure that it is in the same place associated with the PSD file

Supported video and image sequence formats

You can open video files and image sequences in the following formats.

QuickTime video formats

  • MPEG‑1 (.mpg or .mpeg)
  • MPEG‑4 (.mp4 or .m4v)
  • MPEG‑2 is supported if an MPEG‑2 encoder is installed on your computer.

Image sequence formats

  • Cineon and JPEG 2000 are supported if the plug‑ins are installed.

Color mode and bit depth

Video layers can contain files in the following color modes and bits per channel (bpc):

  • Grayscale: 8, 16, or 32 bpc
  • RGB: 8, 16, or 32 bpc
  • CMYK: 8 or 16 bpc
  • Lab: 8 or 16 bpc

Animation panel (frame mode)

Animation panel (timeline mode)

Animation panel overview

Animation is a series of pictures, or frames shown over time. Each frame that creates the illusion of movement or other changes may vary slightly from the previous frame when frames appear briefly.

In the standard version of previous versions of Photoshop, an animation panel (window> animation) appears in the frame mode, showing the thumbnail of each frame in your animation. Choose frames, vertical loop options, add frames, and delete and animate animation.

The Animation Panel menu contains additional commands for editing frames or timeline times and building panel displays. Click the panel menu icon to see available commands.

Animation Panel (frame mode)

  • Choosing the First Frame B. Using the previous Frame C uses C. Creating Animation D Next Image E Devices Animation Frames F. Copying Frames Selected Frames H. Transitions Selected Frames H. Transitions Chronological Mode I. Animated Group Menu

You can use an animated panel in frame mode or timeline mode. Timeline mode shows static and animation properties for document layers. Use tools on the bottom of the bowl to navigate through frames, zoom time or time, change the onion skin mode, delete keyframes and preview the video. Control the timeline for a layer, set the keypieces for the layer attributes, and specify a portion of the video as a working part on the timeline.

  • Run audio playback. Zoom in C. Zoom Slider T. Zoom. E. Onion skins Remove F. Delete key scratches

In Timeline mode, the animations panel displays every layer that is synchronized in layers panels (for the background layer) of each Photoshop document. Whenever a layer is added, deleted, renamed, grouped, duplicated or colored, the changes will be updated in both panels.

When animated layers are grouped as a smart object, animated information in an animated panel is stored on a smart object.

Frame mode controls

In legal mode, the animations panel has the following controls

Looping Options

How many times the animation plays when exported as an animated GIF file.

Frame Delay Time

Set a period of time during playback time

Tween Animation Frames

Adds continuous frames between two frames, interfering with the properties of layers between the new frames.

Duplicate Selected Frames

Adding a frame to the animation by duplicating the selected frame in the animated panel.

Convert To Timeline Animation

  • Converts a frame animation to timeline animation using key frames to animate layer properties.

Changing a legal session for time animation using the main frames to animate layer attributes.

Timeline mode controls

In chronological order, the animation team controls the following aspects:

  • Choose the panel options from the Animation Panel menu.
  • Do one of the following
  • Select a size option.
  • In Timeline mode, select anyone to show only layer names.

Switch timeline units

You can display an animation group timeline in frame number or time unit units.

  • To select the display units, select the panel options from the animated panel menu and select the frame numbers or time frame.
  • Time-to-click (Windows) or option-click (Mac OS) on the top left corner of the timeline to switch between the current timer display

Show or hide layer properties in the timeline

When you add layers in the document, they will appear as tracks in the timeline. Expand layer tracks to show animated layer attributes

  • To show or hide layer attributes, click on the triangle to the left of the layer name

Show or hide layers in the timeline

All document layers will appear in chronological order by default. To display only a subset of layers, you can set them as favorites

  • Select one or more layers from the animated panel over time, and then select Create Custom Dress Layers for Show> Set in the Animation Panel menu
  • To indicate which layers will be displayed, select the show from the animation panel menu, then select all layers and favorite layers.

Navigate the timeline

With the Animation panel in timeline mode, do any of the following

  • Drag the current timeline.
  • Click on the number or location of the ruler of the time you want to maintain the current timing.
  • Drag the current time display (timeline in the upper left corner).
  • Double-click the current time scenario and enter a frame number or time in the setup current time dialog box.
  • Use the background controls in the animated panel.
  • Go to the Animation panel menu and then select a time.

Switch animation modes

You can use the animated panel for frame or timeline animation. Frame mode shows each individual frame, allowing each individual to set up personal and tile attributes. Timeline mode shows frames in continuous timelines, allowing key frames to animate properties and play video layers.

Simply choose the mode you want before the animation starts. However, you can modify animated modes in an open document, replacing an alternate animation with a term animation or a dependency animation

You may lose some non-stop key laws when modifying the timeline animation for the frame animation. However, the animation look will not change

  • In the animated panel, do any of the following
  • Change the frame animation icon.
  • Click Change Timeline Animation Icon.
  • Change the frame animation or change the timeline from the animations menu menu.

Specify timeline duration and frame rate

When you work in timeline mode, you can specify the duration and frame rate of the document that contains video or animation. From the first rule you last mentioned, the total time length of the video clip is. Frame rate or frames per second (fps) is usually determined by the type of output you produce: NTSC video has a frame rate of 29.97 fps; The PAL video has a frame rate of 25 fps; And the motion picture picture is a frame rate of 24 fps. Depending on the transmission system, NTSC video or PAL video or frame rate on DVD video can be the same frame rate as 23.976. CD ROM or Web-visual video usually has a frame rate of 10 to 15 fps.

When you create a new document, the default timeout period is 10 seconds. The frame rate selected document is preset. Non-video priorities (like international paper), the default rate is 30 fps. For video forecasts, 25 fps for PAL and 29.97 for NTSC.

  • From the Animation Panel menu, select the document settings.
  • Enter or select the values for the term and the frame rate.

Reducing existing video or animation time has the effect of trimming frames (no key frames) from the end of the document.

  • Add a layer.

Background layers cannot be animated. If you want to animate content, change the background layer to the normal layer or include the following:

  • New layer to add content.
  • New video layer to add video content.
  • New blank video layer that creates cloning content or hand-drawn animations.
  • Add content to the layer.
  • (Optional) Add a layer mask.

A layer mask can be used to reveal a portion of the layer content. Over time, you can create layer masks to reveal the various parts of layers content. Add layer masks.

  • To move the current timeline to time or frame, you have to set the first important law
  • Run the main structure for a layer property.

Click the triangle next to the layer name. The downward triangle shows the properties of the layers. Then, click on the Stopwatch to set the first key frame for the property that you want to animate. You can set up key frames for more than one layer property at a time.

  • Move the current time range and the tile layer will change.

Move the current time viewer to the time or time of the layer’s property. You can do one or more of the following

  • Change the position of layers to move layer content.
  • Change layer opacity to fade or out content.
  • Replace a layer mask position to reveal the different parts of the layers.
  • Turn off a tile mask or turn off

Some types of animations require additional layers with new content, such as changing the color of an object or fully replicating the content of the frame

By using the time different variant stopwatch for vector mask level or vector mask function, to survive patterns, you have to replace vector mask with shaped layers

  • Add additional layers to the content and edit their layer attributes.
  • Move or arrange layer duration to indicate when a layer animation appears.
  • Preview animation. Use the controls in the Timeline panel to run the animation you created. Then preview the animations in your web browser. You can watch an animated preview of the saved web dialog box. See video or timeline animation
  • Save animation. You can save as an image sequence or video using an animated or video command using an animated GIF animated web command. The PSD format you can import Adobe After Effects, it can be saved.

Use key frames to survive layer properties

You can survive the various layered properties like level, character, and dress. Every change can happen individually or at the same time with other changes. If you want to keep separate objects individually, it’s best to create separate layers

Use frames to switch to layer attributes to a video, changing the attribute properties.

Here are some examples of how you live layer attributes:

  • Drag the layer in the document window to position status by displaying an important frame for status properties, then display the current time

By adding an important frame with the asset of light can raise a single layer bandwidth, then move the current time display and change the layer’s opacity in the layers pan. • You can animate 3D properties, such as object and camera position. (For more information, create 3D animations.)

To create a property using the main frames, you have to set at least two main laws on that property. Otherwise, the changes you make to the layer are practical for the shelf life.

Each layer has a stand wash icon that varies from time to time, and you’re clicking to start the video. When the stand watch for a particular asset is active, Photoshop automatically sets a new keyboard when changing the current time and asset values. When the stationwatch is inactive for an asset, the property does not have any major frames. If you hit the value of a stacked property when the stopwatch is inactive, the value of the stack is valid for a period of time. If you disable Stopwatch, you will permanently delete all the key frames for that property.

Choose the interpolation method

Interpolation (sometimes tweening) describes the unknown process of completing unknown values between two known values. In digital video and movie, interpolation is the creation of new values between two key points. For example, a universal element to move left to 50 pixels in 15 frames, you must set the graphic position in the first and 15th frames and both are keyframes. Photoshop will insert frames between two key points. Interpolation between keyframes, opacity, styles, and universal lighting animations are used.

In the timeline panel, a keyboard layout depends on the interface to choose a gap between the keyframes.

Linear keyframe

Replaces animated assets from one keyword to another. (An exception is a switched mask level property that suddenly switches between enabled and disabled states.)

Hold keyframe

Maintaining the current asset system. This interpolation method is useful for stroke effects, or layers appear or disappear suddenly

To choose the interpolation method for a keyword, do the following:

  • The Timeline Group, select one or more keyframes.
  • Do one of the following:
  • Right-click on the selected keyboard and select a linear interporter or hold interface from the context menu.
  • Open the Panel menu and use Keyframe Interpolation> Linear or Keyframe Interpolation> Hold.

Move the current time code on a keyboard

After setting the initial keyword for an asset, the Photoshop keyframe displays the Navigator, which can be moved from the keyframe to keyframe or used to set or remove keyboards. When Keyframe Navigator is active (yellow), the tier property pointing to the current time is accurate as a keyframe.

The keyframe navigator is between the current time indicator keyframes when the dorm is inactive (gray). Key fire Navigator when there are arrows on each side of the box, there are other key names for that property on the current double.

  • In the Timeline panel, click the keyframe navigator arrow. The up arrow on the left moves to the previous keyboard. Rightwards the arrow key moves the current keypad next to the keyboard.

Select keyframes

  • The Timeline Group, do any of the following:
  • To select a keyword, click on the keyword icon.
  • To select multiple keyframes, drag a selection mark around the Shift-click or keyframes in the keyframe.
  • To select all the keyboard for a layer property, click on the next layer’s property name for the stopwatch icon

Move keyframes

  • Drag the selected keyframe symbols to the desired time. (If you select multiple keyframes, they should move into a group and maintain the same time interval.

To enhance or control multiple keyframes, Alt-drag (Windows) or Select-drag (Mac OS) gap. As you drag, animate or speed increase, there is a key feature in the opposite end of the selection

Copy and paste keyframes

Copy the keyframe to property of a single asset (such as a level) to any one layer. When you keyframes, they reflect copy-copying from the current timeline

You can copy keyframes from one layer at a time. When you paste keyframes into another layer they will appear in the associated properties in the target layer. The current keyboard appears at the current time and other keyframes are followed by the corresponding order. After paste is done, keyframes are selected, so you can move them to the timeline instantly.

Note: You can copy and paste keyframes between more than one property at a time.

  • In the Timeline panel, display layer assets that contain the key frames you want to copy.
  • Select one or more keyframes
  • Right-click on Selected Keyboard and choose Copy Keyphrames.
  • In the timeline group with the target layer, point to the current time and change the key points you want to see. Please select the target layer.
  • Open the panel menu and select the keyframes.

Delete keyframes

  • Timeline Group, select one or more keyframes and do one of the following:
  • Choose Delete Keyframes from the right-click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac OS) selected Keyword, and the context menu.
  • From the Group menu, select Delete Keyframes

Create hand-drawn animations

If you want to create frame-to-frame hand-drawn animations, you can add a blank video layer to your document. After placing a blank video layer above the video layer, the blank video layer opens the opacity and allows the contents of the video layers to see below. You can rotate the content of the video layer or draw on the blank video layer. See paint frames in video layers. Note: Create a new document. 1.       Add a blank video layer.2.       Add layer or content. 3.       (Optional) Timeline Panel, onion Skin mode to activate the onion skins from the menu to enable.4.       Move the current time indicator to the next frame5.       Paint or add content to a slightly different position in the content of the previous frames.

You can add a blank video frame, copy the frame, or select a layer> video layer, remove a frame from the blank video layer, and then select the right command. When you create more hand-drawn frames, you can pull the current time viewer or use background controls to preview your animation.

Insert, delete, or duplicate blank video frames

Blank video frame can be added or removed from a blank video layer. You can copy already existing (drawn) frames in blank video layers.

  • Select the timeline panel, the empty video layer and then show the current time for the required time.
  • Select Layer> Video Layers and choose one of the following:

Insert Blank Frame

Insert a blank video frame on the selected video layer in the current time

Delete Frame

Removes video frame in the currently selected blank video layers

Duplicate Frame

Add a copy of the video frame to the current video in the selected blank video layer

Question About creating VFX textures!

wind

I think that something like that could be achieved easily with Photoshop

soft round brush for basic shapes, and a soft round smudge tool at 15% to blur your shapes could get you something very similar.

^that technique in combination with filters menu will usually get you what you want. Gaussian blur, motion blur, other>min, other>max are the ones I use the most and will get you pretty far!

Looks like radial blur is useful here - there’s Spin and Zoom options.

Also don’t forget that you can always make a texture as a straight flat thing and then apply it to a mesh in Maya and use deformers to get a nice curve. Great for things like rings where you want to convert a square into a circle.

Hope that helps!

ErbLesson

I started using Substance Designer for these kind of things. What @Hovl showed can be done procedural for more and different results (but of course you’ll need to go through similar steps as he showed).

Get good with after effects as well as substance designer. There are a bunch of tutorials online which will show you the basics of both tools.

There’s a substance thread here in the forum where we started collecting some networks to create textures.

Also @NikolaD has some substances on his gumroad which you could use as inspiration: Nikola Damjanov

See also - Filterforge .

*Edit, added extra idea

Could paint the tile in Photoshop, duplicate the layer and motion blur it in Photoshop. Take the original and select above the line and delete.

You could also make a small set of brushes of that ‘hump’ shape in Photoshop and then use the brush settings to change the size, scatter etc. I would do each pass on a seperate layer and then erase overlaps and merge.

Looks like caustics to me, if you have access to a texture library you could do a combination of curves, levels, blurring and median filters in Photoshop.

there’s this interesting technique that i dont think many people know about:

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/reaction_diffusion_in_pshop/reaction_diffusion_in_pshop.htm

could be useful for creating the outline shapes and then use a gradient fill and/or some blur to get the rest.

Okay that min and max trick is fantastic. Good share Nate

This seems like exactly the kind of thing that Substance Designer is intended for. That’s not to say you couldn’t make it in Photoshop though… it would probably just be more tedious.

This is a really interesting topic and an awesome trick to have in your back-hand! Thanks for sharing!
