SafeAssign compares student submissions against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted text and existing works. SafeAssign is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. Use SafeAssign to review test submissions for originality and create opportunities to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase.

You can use SafeAssign in two ways:

Turn on SafeAssign for an assessment . In this scenario, students submit their assignments and SafeAssign compares their submissions with a local and a global database of previously submitted and publicly available work.

Use DirectSubmit to submit an electronic copy of paper that you suspect might contain language borrowed from other sources.

Both methods produce an Originality Report which provides detailed information about the matches found between a student's submitted work and existing sources.

Safe Assign

What is safeassign.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool in Blackboard that detects unoriginal content in students’ papers by identifying similarities between submitted assignments and existing works. The SafeAssign feature is effective as both a deterrent and an instructional tool to help students learn paraphrasing and when to cite original sources.

How does SafeAssign work?

The SafeAssign feature uses algorithm or rules capable of identifying exact and inexact matches between a submitted paper and a particular source material. The SafeAssign database is compared against several different sources including:

Enabling SafeAssign

Instructions on how to enable the SafeAssign feature for an assignment can be found at Blackboard’s Help Center.

Note: When you create an assignment, you have the option to Exclude Submissions . What this means is students’ work will not be compared to Institutional or Global Reference Databases allowing them to self-check their work against SafeAssign and submit drafts or versions for your review before submitting their final assignment.

SafeAssign Originality Reports

The Originality Report shows the percentage of text that matches existing sources. It also shows the suspected sources of each section of a submitted paper that returns a match. It is important to read the report carefully and determine whether the text in question is properly attributed.

The SafeAssign Originality Report is divided into three areas.

Report Summary: Located at the top panel of the report, the percentage score indicates the overall risk of matches or similar text.

Citations: A list of sources that matches the submitted paper are listed in the right panel of the report.

Submission: Located in the left panel of the report and shows all matching blocks of text. Each source has a color specific to that source – up to 30 unique colors are used for up to 30 different sources. Text matching a source is highlighted in the source color and identified with a number.

What do the overall scores mean?

  • Scores below 15%: These papers typically include some quotes and common phrases that match other documents. Further analysis is not required as this low score indicates no evidence of plagiarism.
  • Scores between 15% and 40%: These papers include extensive quoted or paraphrased material, OR they include plagiarism. These papers should be reviewed to determine if the matching text is properly referenced.
  • Scores over 40%: There is a very high probability that text in these papers was copied from other sources. These papers include quoted or paraphrased text in excess and should be reviewed for plagiarism.

Analyzing the Report

Click on the highlighted/numbered text to open a window that displays the text alongside the suspected source and the probability percentage of text that was copied from that source. In most cases there is a hyperlink to the copied source. No matter the percentage score, you should interpret this as a warning indicator and investigate each match to confirm whether it is plagiarism.

Items such as references, quotes, etc. can be deselected if you know or have determined there is no risk. Once you have deselected the items you do not want included in the report, click the Resubmit button to generate a new report that will ignore excluded sources.

Return to the grade assignment page and click on the View Originality Report button to view the revised report. You will notice that the percentage score is reduced because you excluded some of the sources.

Safe Assign (Plagiarism Checking)

Safe Assign is a plagiarism detection and prevention tool that is part of Blackboard. It compares submitted assignments to the following sources:

  • Internet sources – public access sources
  • ProQuest database
  • Institutional document archives – any previously submitted documents from University of Rochester’s Blackboard system
  • Global Reference database – any submissions made voluntarily to a global database of all Blackboard customers

Note: University of Rochester is currently not providing students the opportunity to submit to the Global Reference database.

How To Create a SafeAssignment  (PDF)

How To Read Your Report (PDF)

The University of Rochester highly recommends that instructors provide students with the option to view their reports before final submission and to exclude these initial submissions from being stored in the institutional database. Check with your Blackboard support to learn more about how to allow this.

The University of Rochester also discourages the use of the Direct Submit option. Students should be aware that their papers are being submitted to the system to be checked for plagiarism. Direct Submit bypasses this step.

Please note that once submitted, the Safe Assign Originality Report may take some time to process. Processing can take anywhere from minutes to days, depending on the volume of submissions to the central system. During busy times in the academic year (midterms and end of semester) the process is subject to take longer.

Note: Safe Assign is a Blackboard shared, hosted solution and is subject to its own maintenance periods and downtimes. University of Rochester has no control over these. When University of Rochester is made aware of any maintenance or downtimes, they will be posted in Announcements.

Note that you must first turn on the Safe Assign tools in your course before the options in the documentation become available. Tools can be turned on under Customization, Tool Availability.

About the Originality Report

The system generates an originality report that offers suggestions about possible sources of plagiarism. Please note that this is not definitive, nor comprehensive; the instructor still needs to review the submission.

Risks of False Positives:

  • Does not always distinguish properly quoted material
  • Cannot distinguish between common phrases and truly proprietary expressions

Risks of False Negatives:

  • Limited search
  • Cannot detect disguised plagiarism

Results returned in a SafeAssign Originality Report may not be identical to results returned by a consumer internet search service (e.g. Google, Bing, etc.) for any individual sentence or phrase. The results from the SafeAssign service are only meant to be a tool for use at the discretion of the teacher or instructor. Due to the size and scope of both academic subject matter and the number of resources searched by SafeAssign, the results are not meant to guarantee or otherwise indicate that plagiarism has or has not occurred. The assessment of potential plagiarism should reside in the hands of the instructor, and SafeAssign results should always be considered in the context of other resources and good judgment.

SafeAssign does not distinguish between direct quotations and text lifted from a source; students who are quoting correctly will likely have reports that indicate overlap with these sources. The reports are easy to read because these instances are easily noted.

Conversely, SafeAssign does not catch essays that include plagiarized ideas or concepts, nor can it detect uncited paraphrasing that dramatically changes the wording of an original source while maintaining that source’s organization and/or sentence structure.

The implications of originality reports are not always self-evident. Teachers need to discuss the interpretation of these reports with students and allow students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the tool.

If you have questions about interpreting the originality report, please contact a librarian or your academic honesty office.

FERPA and HIPAA Policy Information

FERPA considerationsAccording to FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, education records that identify students without their consent may not be disclosed to third parties.

  • Students should be advised to remove their name and any personal information (name, SSN, Student ID) from within the paper and title page, or the header or footer before submitting assignments to Safe Assign.
  • If a student wants to voluntarily leave their name on their paper, they may do so.

Additionally, this “cloud” service is not HIPAA compliant, therefore assignments that contain patient information should not be created with Safe Assignment and students should not be asked to submit papers containing patient information.

Plagiarism Prevention Strategies

The following are tips on preventing plagiarism:

  • Require multiple drafts of assignments before final submission
  • Design original assignments that are hard to plagiarize
  • Provide aids to comprehension of complex texts
  • Provide multiple low-stakes assignments
  • Provide clear guidance on preventing plagiarism

Guidelines for Use

Use SafeAssign as part of a balanced approach to encourage academic integrity and foster student success:

  • by providing clear instructions and guidance for assignments
  • by encouraging students to manage time and make progress prior to deadlines for submission of graded assignments
  • by making other resources known to students (e.g., writing center)
  • by using it as a deterrent, not as a “caught you” enforcement tool

Openly disclose the use of SafeAssign for this course on the syllabus and at the time assignments are announced, including clarifying the choices made about retention of student work (Local, or No-Retention).

For any given assignment:

  • use SafeAssign for all papers;
  • not submit papers arbitrarily to SafeAssign, for the purpose of reviewing originality reports for papers deemed “suspicious;”
  • or consider exceptions for specific students, who may object to the retention of their work by SafeAssign, working with the University Ombudsperson to resolve any conflict

Faculty should make the final determination of originality and integrity. The originality reports, and the machine judgment that generates them, provide a set of useful resources for comparison. However, there is no substitute for human judgment and assessment prior to generating feedback for students or making a determination about honesty and integrity.

To ensure privacy, please ask students to remove identification (e.g., names and student numbers) from submissions because:

  • Blackboard will automatically show student’s names to assignments when instructors are viewing, or downloading.
  • removing the identifying information from the document allows it to be preserved in the repository without affecting the student’s educational privacy.

More Information on Plagiarism Software

It’s important to note that plagiarism software has a tendency to produce “False positives”,meaning that a paper is noted as potetially plagiarized when in fact it is not. The following articles provide more insight on this matter.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.
