Tips for Using a Times Table Chart

The times table chart is pretty straightforward, but kids can modify it to find patterns.

  • Have kids highlight all the multiples of 2 on the whole page in yellow.
  • Kids can highlight multiples of 5, 10, or any other number in different colors.
  • Fold the chart into quarters by row so kids can concentrate on learning the multiples for only five numbers at a time.

Printable Multiplication Grid Charts

Multiplication charts show multiplication facts in a grid format so kids can better understand this mathematical process. To use the grid, look at a number in the first column, then look across that row to see multiples of the number. Kids can use the table to see patterns in multiplication facts as a way to better understand the concept of multiplication.

Multiplication Grid 0 to 12

This multiplication grid shows all the multiplication facts for the numbers 0 through 12. A large grid chart like this is a handy homework helper or visual aid for multiplication lessons.

This multiplication grid shows all the multiplication facts for the numbers 1 through 100. An expanded chart like this is great for advanced math students.

Tips for Using a Multiplication Grids

When your kids first look at the multiplication table, the information can seem a bit overwhelming. Explain how it works and incorporate it into fun activities to help kids get comfortable using it.

  • Present one row at a time by having kids cover the rest of the page with a piece of construction paper.
  • Explore patterns like all numbers multiplied by 0 equal 0, numbers multiplied by 1 equal themselves, or numbers multiplied by 5 result in a sum ending in either 5 or 0.
  • Have kids color rows or columns in different colors to highlight trends and make it more visually appealing.
  • Give each student a laminated grid to keep at their desk and use for group activities or individual worksheets.
  • Use the grid as an example to show kids how to write a multiplication chart.
  • Show kids how to trace one finger along the row for a number in the first column and trace another finger down the column of any number in the first row to find what those numbers equal when multiplied.

Printable Individual Multiplication Tables 1 to 12

When kids are starting to learn their multiplication facts, an individual table for each number can help them stay focused on that number. These multiplication charts for kids feature traditional multiplication equation facts and the Common Core technique of using counters to show and explain what multiplication means. Each number has its own bright color to make them more fun and help differentiate each multiplication table.

Multiplication Chart & Times Tables – Free Printables

Hi everyone! Above is a multiplication chart and below are some times tables. Don’t worry if it’s not yet clear how it works, it’s all explained below.

In this lesson we’re going to cover:

  • Using Times Tables to learn multiples fast.
  • How to read and use a Multiplication Chart.
  • Practicing to perfection!

We’ve also got some colorful printable resources (and their monochrome counterparts for school printers).

Times Tables Why Should I Memorize? Memorization Method Multiplication Chart How It Works Learning Quickly Practice Zone: Mastering Multiples How to Learn Times Tables Fast Tricks for Easy Multiples

Times Tables Multiplication Charts

Times Tables

You will see in the colorful tables below, the first 12 multiples of every number from 1 to 20, along with the equation.

Times Tables 20x12

Why Should I Learn the Times Tables?

You should learn the times tables because they make doing quick math in your head very easy. Less time adding numbers or counting on your fingers means more time living your life – or solving the rest of the problem!

So, the next time you want to know how much it costs to buy 7 things for $8 each, instead of having to slowly count in 8’s using your fingers to keep track, you’ll already know the answer is 56!

Won’t that be great?

Of course, memorizing takes some time and practice but trust me, it’s worth it in the end – they’ll stick with you for the rest of your life.

One great way to memorize your times tables:

  • Print them out .
  • See which ones you find hard to memorize.
  • Back of your bedroom door.
  • Your mirror (not in the middle of it, though).
  • On the cover of your diary/planner.
  • Next to your bed.
  • Then, every time you see one of them, read through it from top to bottom, taking your time on any combinations you find tricky to remember.
  • When you feel able, take a quick look at the times table, close your eyes and say it to yourself (out loud is best). Open your eyes and check if you got it.

Want to keep all the times tables in one place?

You might prefer using a multiplication chart, like this one!

Multiplication Chart

This has to be one of my favorite tools for learning multiplication. I do love a good visual representation – and the spectrum of visible light, what we call a rainbow!

Multiplication Chart 1 to 12 Rainbow Color Squares

Here it is in greyscale too for accessibility , please choose the one that is easier for you or your students to see.

What I particularly like about this style above is that the square numbers (1×1=1, 2×2=4, 3×3=9, etc.) are highlighted. If you prefer a plain chart, please see our printables below .

How To Use a Multiplication Chart

To use a multiplication chart, start by use the numbers 1 to 12 on left side as the multipliers. Let’s choose 9 as a multiplier for this example.

1 to 12 Row 9 Selected

The numbers 1 to 12 across the top are the multiplicands. We’ll choose 4 as a multiplicand for this example.

1 to 12 Row 4 Selected

Follow the row across from the 9, and the column down from the 4. Where they meet is the product.

9x4 Example

So, you can see that 9×4=36

You can do this with any of the numbers… why don’t you try a few combinations to test it out?

(If you don’t get how it works, please let me know in the comments and I will add some more explanations.)

Using the Multiplication Chart to Learn and Study

Now, you’ve got the chart, and you can see how it works, but…

Q: How do you use it to learn effectively? A: Break it down into sections!

Learning small chunks is always easier than learning loads in one go. Here are two ways of breaking the chart down to make learning it easier.

Section Learning Options

Take your pick and get learning! Personally, I prefer Option 1 , but they’re both perfectly good ways to break it down.

One last thing to say: You might also have noticed that by following a row all way across (or a column all the way down), you’re looking at a times table!

Multiplication Chart as a Times Table

Practice Zone: Mastering Multiples

Now that you know what times tables are and how they can help with your multiplication, it’s time to start practicing!

Grab a piece or three of paper and write out each times table for numbers 2-12.

If you’re struggling, using a calculator or resource to help you isn’t cheating!

Once you’ve done this…

Fill in the chart in PhET’s Arithmetic , a simple but effective game (select “Multiply”). Do this once a day to test yourself and make sure your memory is unbeatable!

Then, head on over to the best game I’ve found for overall multiplication practice :

  • Select “ Play Game “
  • Choose “ Times Tables “.
  • Select “ Mixed ” for all-round practice, or focus in on a specific number.
  • Get started with “ Hit the Answer “.
  • Challenge yourself with “ Hit the Question “.

With regular practice, you’ll soon be a multiplication whiz!

How Can I Learn My Times Tables Fast?

You can learn your times tables fast using these 5 tips and the shortcuts below to unlock your brain’s love for learning .

Tip 1 : Your brain loves patterns.

Tip 2 : Little and often goes further than a lot all at once. Practice a little every day for two weeks, then every other day for another two weeks.

Tip 3 : Variety is the spice of life. Use different methods or, at the very least, change which number you’re focusing on regularly to keep it interesting.

Tip 4 : Bring your thoughts to life: use your voice!

Tip 5 : Write them out. Handwriting engages your brain to focus on the information you’re writing, storing it in your memory more effectively.

Tricks for Learning Multiples by Number

Using tricks to learn your times tables is a great idea. There are a bunch of tricks below, but unfortunately for 3, 7, 13, and 14, you’ll just have to put the time in to learn them by heart.

Trick for 2

Double it. Add the number to itself:

Trick for 4

Double it. Twice. So, add the number to itself twice:

Trick for 5

Halve the number and multiply by 10 (not so easy for odd numbers):

Another option is to multiply by 10 then halve it (better for odd numbers):

Or, for 5×7, you could do 5×6 and add 5.

Trick for 6

6 times an even number will end with the same number:

…and so on.

Trick for 7×8

Say 5, 6, 7, 8 to yourself… no this is not the start of a song, this is how you multiply 7 by 8.

It’s 56!

Trick for 8

This is going to sound familiar: Double, double, and double.

Trick for 8×8

This little rhyme sticks with me from childhood:

Tricks for 9

One less, two less, three less….

This trick works from ×1 to ×10 – the first digit is always 1 less than the multiplier:

9× 2 = 1 8

9× 3 = 2 7

… and so on.

From ×11 to ×20, minus 2 from the multiplier for the first two digits.

9× 12 = 10 8

9× 13 = 11 7

For ×21 to ×30, minus 3 from the multiplier for the first two digits.

9× 22 = 19 8

9× 23 = 20 7

Up and Down (The Fingers Trick)

The units go down in 1’s: 9 , 1 8 , 2 7 , 3 6 …

The tens go up in 1’s: ( 0 )9, 1 8, 2 7, 3 6, 4 5 …

To get the same effect, use your fingers. It works up to ×10 because… you have 10 fingers 🤪

Multiplying 9x5 trick with fingers

After ×10, just multiply by the unit, and add 90, 180, 270, etc.

Check your answers. If the sum of the digits is divisible by 9, then it is a multiple of 9.

Example 1 : 873 → 8+7+3=18 → 18÷9=2, so 873 is a multiple of 9 (9×97=873)

Example 2 : 326 → 3+2+6=11 → 11÷9=1.22…

Trick for 10

Stick a 0 on the end:

Trick for 11

For the first 9 multiples, up to 11×9, just repeat the number:

For the next 9 multiples, from 11×10 to 11×18, ad the digits together and put it in the middle:

Trick for 12

Times 10 the number, then add 2 times the number:

Trick for 15

Times by 10 then add half of the number again:

Trick for 20

Double then times by 10:

(Remember the trick for ×10 – just put a 0 on the end)

Students are constantly learning new and complex content as they progress through their education.

At a young age, they’re introduced to multiplication — something that’s used in everyday life, from simple math skills when grocery shopping to complex calculations on tax forms.

A simple way to teach students how to multiply is through a multiplication chart, also known as multiplication tables or times tables. These charts help students memorize various multiplication equations, so they can come up with answers quickly and accurately.

This article gives you access to free printable multiplication charts for your classroom. We’ll also explain the best ways to teach multiplication tables to your students and show you different multiplication games to help them memorize these tables as multiplication facts.

Master multiplication with Prodigy Math

Unlock the benefits of game-based learning to help your child or student master multiplication with Prodigy Math.

After mastering counting and addition,  students take the big leap to multiplication.

The best way to teach multiplication is to say ‘ groups of ’ instead of  times . Explain to students that when multiplying, they’re  adding together groups  of numbers.

3 × 4 becomes 3 groups of 4.

4 + 4 + 4 = 12

Multiplication is a shortcut to adding groups of numbers together. This method of thinking helps students understand  why  they’re multiplying and  how  it works.

We’ll go through a 1-12 times table chart and show you the best tips to teach your students.

Learning times tables, as you’ll see, can be super simple for students in primary school and up.

Tips for the 1 times table

Anything multiplied by one stays that number. These equations always mean there’s only one group of numbers.

Tips for the 2 times table

Anything multiplied by two is being  doubled . Students can also think of this as adding two of the same number together.

How to memorize the 1-12 multiplication table

Tips for the 3 times table.

Three doesn’t have any rules that make its multiplication table easy to memorize, but there is a pattern for every ten multiples of three:

The last digit of these multiples always repeat, which means that students can remember these digits to help them with the three multiplication tables.

Take a look at the next ten multiples of three:

The last digits in both groups are the same:  3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0 .

If students can remember this order they will at least know what the last digit of any multiplication of three is. For example, numbers that end with a  nine  that are then multiplied by  three  are going to then become a number that ends with a  seven .

Teach your students the pattern of the three multiplication table as if it were a phone number,  (369) 258-1470 .

Tips for the 4 times table

When a number is multiplied by four, double it and then double it again. It’s not the most clever trick, but it works!

Tips for the 5 times table

Five is one of the easiest multiplication tables to master. Teach students that the five times table always follows the pattern of ending with:

Odd numbers multiplied by five are going to end with a five, while even numbers multiplied by five will end with a zero.

Tips for the 6 times table

When multiplying an even number by six, the solution always ends with the last digit of the number that’s being multiplied.

Unfortunately, this trick only works for even numbers, and  not  for odd numbers.

Tips for the 7 times table

We can use our previous tips to figure out the first few multiples of seven:

  • Multiplying seven by two is the same as doubling seven — 14
  • Three times seven results in a number that ends in a one — 21
  • Multiplying seven by four is like doubling it twice — 28
  • Multiplying an odd number by five will give a solution that ends in five — 35

But what about remembering later multiples of seven?

Here is a handy trick for seven times eight. The solution for seven times eight is like counting upwards:

Now your students have another memory trick to help them through their seven times tables.

Tips for the 8 times table

Double, double, and then double again!

Tips for the 9 times table

The nine multiplication table seems hard to learn, but there are two tips that can make them simple.

Multiplying by nine is the same as multiplying by ten and then subtracting the other number:

The second tip works for the first ten multiples of nine. Every time students increase what nine is multiplied with, the tens column of the solution increases by one, while the ones column decreases by one.

Tips for the 10 times table

Ten has the easiest multiplication table to remember. Tell students to add a zero to the end of whichever number they’re multiplying by ten.

Tips for the 11 times table

Up to eleven times nine, tell students they can repeat the digit they’re multiplying by eleven.

Tips for the 12 times table

To make the twelve multiplication table easier, split it into two parts, ten and two. Then add them together!

4 Fun multiplication chart & times tables games for classroom learning

Students have to remember a lot of numbers when looking at a multiplication chart. Math puzzles and math games can make developing these essential math skills fun and engaging, which helps ingrain the information in students’ minds.

1. Prodigy Math

Take your students on a virtual adventure, where they can learn important math concepts without realizing they’re practicing math concepts.

Prodigy Math can help you teach multiplication charts , assign specific questions and track how students are doing in real time!

times table list printable

The game keeps students engaged with content through an exciting story and loads of features. All of the “marking” is done for you — instantly! Reports can then tell you which topics students are struggling with.

Prodigy Math creates a personalized learning experience for every student, so they can practice the skills they have trouble with. This allows all students to learn at their own pace.

times table list printable

Meanwhile, from the teacher dashboard, you can create assignments and practice tests, view statistics, and plan lessons.

2. Table races & speed tests

In this game, students race against the clock to complete as many equations as possible.

Supply students with a math worksheet that has several columns of equations. Each column should have a different multiplication table that’s completely shuffled up.

For example, in the times table worksheet one column will only have the four times table while the next has the seven multiplication table.

Keep the equations shuffled so students can’t simply count upwards to get the answer. They’ll need to think critically as answers range across the different multiplication tables they’ve been taught.

no image

Once every student has a worksheet, give them a countdown of 60 seconds to answer 20 questions . Then have students tally up their answers to see how they did.

This exercise is just for fun, but adding an incentive — like crowning a class champion — can get students more interested in the activity through interactive learning. Try to go back and do this activity a couple of times a week.

Eventually, students will have no trouble filling out entire columns of questions correctly in less than 60 seconds!

Try this free table race template in your class!

An alternative to this game is doing a simple speed test , where students can try to improve their speed going through a series of flash cards instead of multiplication worksheets.

Using this method, teachers can customize and randomize the series of, say, 10 cards and see how students improve their solve speed week-by-week.

3. Multiplication bingo

This game can be played as a class or in groups. You’ll either need dice or a random number generator, and bingo sheets to get started. Bingo sheets will have the solutions to multiplication chart equations in a five-by-five grid.

You can fill out these charts yourself,  or  have students create their own bingo sheets to get them a little more involved.

Note:  if you’re using dice, make sure your students aren’t putting the one multiplication tables in their bingo sheet, as it will be impossible for those to come up.

no image

Now, use dice or a random number generator to get your equations. Students then solve the equations to get the numbers on their bingo cards.

If students are working in groups, have them write down the equations so you can check their work.

For dice, roll a pair of them and add the values to get the first number. Then roll the pair of dice again and add the values together to get the number to multiply by. For the random number generator, randomize two numbers from 1-12 and use them for the equation to solve.

Once students have solved the equation they can check their bingo sheet to see if the value is there. This is a great way to get students to think critically and avoid simple memorization of multiplication tables in list form.

4. Multiply to the top

This game creates a class competition to see who can complete their multiplication tables the quickest — and more importantly, the most accurate.

Shuffle up the entire 1-12 multiplication chart and have students compete to see who can answer questions the fastest. The trick is, as soon as a student answers a question wrong, their climb is over. This ensures students aren’t just trying to answer as fast as possible, but are making sure their answers are correct.

times table list printable

Create a visual board for students to look at with a picture of a mountain. Put students’ names up the mountain, depending on how far they got. Students will love competing to reach the top.

Make an event of this game. Students can answer questions at the front of the class to try for the mountaintop title. Students will be excited to compete and showcase their skills.

Learn Your Multiplication Tables

The 12 times table.

Print one and put it on your wall, or paste it in an exercise book.

How to Learn

Your life will be a lot easier when you can simply remember the multiplication tables.

So ... train your memory !

First, use the table above to start putting the answers into your memory.

Then use the Math Trainer - Multiplication to train your memory, it is specially designed to help you memorize the tables.

Use it a few times a day for about 5 minutes each, and you will learn your tables.

Try it now , and then come back and read some more ...

So, the two main ways for you to learn the multiplication table are:

  • Reading over the table
  • Exercising using the Math Trainer

But here are some "tips" to help you even more:

Tip 1: Order Does Not Matter

Example: 3×5=15, and 5×3=15

Another Example: 2×9=18, and 9×2=18

In fact half of the table is a mirror image of the other!

So, don't memorize both "3×5" and "5×3", just memorize that "a 3 and a 5 make 15" when multiplied.

This is very important! It nearly cuts the whole job in half.

Tip 2: Learn the Tables in "Chunks"

It is too hard to put the whole table into your memory at once. So, learn it in "chunks" ...

A   Start by learning the 5 times table.

B  Then learn up to 9 times 5.

C  Is the same as B , except the questions are the other way around. Learn it too.

D   Lastly learn the "6×6 to 9×9" chunk

Then bring it all together by practicing the whole "10 Times Table"

And you will know your 10 Times Table!

(We look at the 12x table below)

Some Patterns

There are some patterns which can help you remember:

2× is just doubling the number. The same as adding the number to itself.

2×2=4, 2×3=6, 2×4=8, etc.

So the pattern is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20

(And once you remember those, you also know 3×2, 4×2, 5×2, etc., right?)

5× has a pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. It ends in either 0 or 5 .

fingers multiply 9

9× has a pattern, too: 9 , 1 8 , 2 7 , 3 6 , 4 5 , 5 4 , 6 3 , 7 2 , 8 1 , 9 0

Now, notice how the "ones" place goes down: 9, 8, 7, 6, ...? And at the same time, the "tens" place goes up: 1, 2, 3,...? Well, your hands can help !

Example: to multiply 9 by 8: hold your 8th finger down, and you can count "7" and "2" ... the answer is 72

10× is maybe the easiest of them all ... just put a zero after it.

10×2=2 0 , 10×3=3 0 , 10×4=4 0 , etc.

The Hardest Ones

For me the hardest ones are 6×7=42, 6×8=48 and 7×8=56. I often have to say in my mind:

"six sevens are forty-two, six eights are forty-eight, seven eights are fifty-six"

What About the 12 Times Table?

Sounds tough, but once you have mastered the 10× table, it is just a few steps away.

So it just leaves these to remember:

And the "Big 3":

  • 11×12=132 and

Why Learn The Multiplication Table?

While it is generally more important to know why things work, with the tables I recommend pure memory , it makes future math work much easier.

How to Use Multiplication Charts and Wheels for Learning

Not sure what to do with these free multiplication charts? Here are a few ideas on how to incorporate them into your learning:

Print out the completed multiplication chart and laminate it or place it in a page protector. All your child to keep it in their math binder  or homeschool binder for an easy reference sheet while doing their math work. This may seem like cheating, but even if they have to look up the answer to the facts as they work, it will help them commit the fact to memory.

Print out the blank multiplication chart (either the grid or the list) and have your child complete one weekly. You can increase the difficulty as their memorization improves by adding a timer to their work. Have them try to beat their time each week or see how many problems they can finish in 1-5 minutes.

Print out the Multiplication Wheels for your child whenever it seems like they need extra practice or for extra credit on their math grade.

The key to memorizing the multiplication facts is a lot of repetition. So the more your child sees the facts and multiplication tables the more quickly they will commit the facts to memory.

Free Printable Multiplication Table (Completed and Blank)

Print out your own free printable multiplication table. I’ve included both a completed and a blank table so that your child can complete the blank table and practice all the multiplication facts from 1×1 up to 10×10.

What is the multiplication table?

The multiplication table is simply an organized list of all of the times tables, from x1 up to x10.

free printable multiplication table

How to use your free printable multiplication table

Get familiar with the multiplication table.

Before using the multiplication table with your child, make sure to talk with her about how it’s organized. Show her how to run her finger across a row and down a column to find the answer to a multiplication problem. For example, to find the answer to 4 × 5, show her how she can run her finger horizontally across the 4 row and vertically down the 5 row. The place where her fingers meet (20) is the answer to 4×5.

times table list printable

(Some children have trouble keeping a straight line as they trace with their fingers. If your child has trouble with this, have him put a ruler under the row to keep his place.)

Look for patterns

Invite your child to look for patterns in the multiplication table. For example, if you draw a diagonal from the top left corner to the bottom right corner, the answers on either side of the diagonal are the same. Why?

times table list printable

Your child may also notice skip-counting patterns in the rows and columns, or she may notice that the diagonal from the top left corner to the bottom right corner is all the square numbers.

Complete the blank table

Have your child practice the times tables by completing the blank multiplication table. Encourage her to use stepping-stone facts she completes neighboring squares. For example, 3×4 is 3 groups of 4. So 4×4 will be just one group of 4 more: 16.
