When you take to the skies one of the most important things when it comes to preparing for your flight is knowing where you'll be seated on the airplane. Like most other airlines, United gives its guests assigned seating on its flights. The majority of customers can select from a variety of seats for free, but there are also options for preferred seating and even upgrades for those who are willing to pay. Here's a look at United Airlines seat selection and United Airlines seat assignment policies.

Most United Airlines flights will have at least two cabin classes: economy and first class. Depending on where you’re going, you may also find business class and premium economy seating.
No matter your fare class, you will be able to choose a seat from the available selection, though how much you’ll pay and the associated fees will differ according to your ticket and various other factors.
How much is seat selection on United Airlines? Charges vary, but generally speaking, the longer and more in-demand your flight, the more expensive it will be for your seat selection.
Basic economy (most restrictive)
Basic economy tickets don't provide complimentary seat selection in any cabin. In exchange for cheaper tickets, you can either opt to pay for a seat assignment or wait until check-in and be randomly assigned a seat.
Families and groups who book basic economy tickets won't be seated together; though again, they can pay to ensure that they’re near each other.
Standard economy
You may be wondering: “How do I choose my seat on United Airlines?” Happily, those booking a regular economy class ticket will have the ability to book a seat for free, although the available options may not be desirable. In this case, customers can also choose to pay for better seats while maintaining their economy class ticket.
If you’re traveling with young children you may want to know: “Does United seat families together?” Yes, it does. If you’re booking an economy ticket or above, United’s system will automatically attempt to seat children under 15 on the same reservation together with their parents.

Preferred seating
Preferred seating features seats with better locations than standard United economy flights. The seats are the same, but they tend to be closer to the front of the cabin. Costs for preferred seating vary depending on the flight, but these are the cheapest paid seat upgrades you can find on United flights.
Economy Plus
Economy Plus seats are within the standard economy cabin, though they’re located just behind first class seating. They provide more legroom than regular economy seats and also offer free alcoholic beverages on premium transcontinental routes. These seats are more expensive than preferred seats.
Premium Plus
Premium Plus is United’s premium economy offering and is available on select flights. This is better than economy class but not as good as United’s international business class, Premium Plus seats are all free for those who book this cabin.
United first and business class
Like Premium Plus, those who book either first or business class can choose any seat within the cabin for free.

Wondering what the seats on your flight will look like? United provides a seat map that you can find when booking your flight. Before selecting a flight, you can view the seat map by selecting “Seats” on the search result page.
This will open a live preview of the seats on your aircraft that shows you the layout of the seats as well as which seats are available to select. You’ll also see the seat map during booking, when you’re prompted to select your seats.
After booking, it’s possible to change your seats by going to "My Trips" and selecting "Manage Trips." Once on your specific flight page, you’ll be able to view your seat and select a new one if you desire.

During booking
You’ll automatically be prompted to select a seat when booking your ticket online. Once you’ve selected your flight, you’ll fill out your passenger information and any frequent flyer programs.
Depending on your flight, United may also offer the ability to purchase discounted bundles during checkout. These may save you money over choosing extras individually, though you’ll want to take a look at the costs.
After deciding whether to add a bundle, you’ll be taken to the seat map to choose your seat. A legend on the right will show you which seats are included and the costs of any upgrades.
Once you’ve selected a seat, complete the check-out process and pay for your ticket.
After booking
If you’ve already booked a ticket and would like to select a seat or change your existing seat, you can do so from the “Manage My Trips” tab under the “My Trips” option.
Then, you’ll select “Manage Trip” from your available trips. Here you’ll find your trip information, including the option to change your seat.

United Airlines’ seating policies can be confusing, especially when you’re booking an economy class ticket. The short of it is this: If you book at least a standard economy ticket, you’ll be able to choose a seat for free during the booking process as long as you're traveling on a United-operated flight (versus a flight operated by a partner). You can also pay to have better seats, though some United elite members will receive access to these better seats for free. Basic economy customers, meanwhile, will always need to pay to select a seat.

Where to sit when flying United’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 with the new interior
United just added a new plane model to its fleet, and it's the most modern one yet.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 — the smaller of the two MAX variants currently in service — joined the carrier's domestic fleet on July 16, marking the first of 270 new domestic jets that are slated to be delivered to United over the coming years.
This isn't just any domestic jet, though.
It's the first to feature United's newly unveiled "signature interior," with seat-back screens, larger overhead bins, power outlets and other passenger-friendly amenities from nose to tail. All new United planes will be delivered from the factory with the upgraded cabins, while existing ones will undergo a comprehensive retrofit program.
For now, if you're looking for the swankiest domestic experience offered by United, you'll want to book on the MAX 8. And once you're booked on Boeing's new ( and beleaguered ) workhorse, here's which seats to pick and which ones to avoid.

United First on the Boeing 737 MAX 8
If faced with the choice, you'll definitely want to snag one of the 16 first-class recliners on the United 737 MAX 8.
Seats are spread across four rows in a 2-2 configuration with roughly 37 inches of pitch.
Though the "bones" of the seat are identical to the new ones you'll find on other domestic UA jets, the seats feel more modern thanks to the 13-inch high-definition seat-back monitor and other refined touches, like a remote control and relocated power outlet.
Some travelers like sitting in the bulkhead, but I'd recommend avoiding row 1 on the United 737 MAX 8. That's because the screens are fixed into the bulkhead wall — if you're really tall or height-challenged, you'll need to bend your neck to watch your content.
Another drawback to the bulkhead is that there's a built-in airbag in each of the seat belts. Though this feature is designed for your safety, the airbag can get uncomfortable after resting on your hips throughout the flight.
I'd recommend choosing seats in row 2 or 3 when flying upfront on the 737 MAX 8.
Row 4 would be my second-to-last pick. You'll be reclining into the bulkhead wall dividing first class and coach, and the proximity to the coach cabin could be bothersome.
United Economy Plus on the Boeing 737 MAX 8
The first thing I noticed when boarding United's new MAX is the sheer number of extra-legroom Economy Plus seats.
These "purple seats," as they're affectionately called by some flight attendants, span nine rows in a standard 3-3 configuration.
As part of United's five-year plan , dubbed "United Next," the carrier's investing in growing the proportion of premium seats in its fleet, including both first-class and Economy Plus, by roughly 75% from 2019 to 2026.
These seats offer an additional three to four inches of pitch compared to regular economy, but the actual seats themselves are otherwise identical.
Some of the 54 Economy Plus seats are much better than others, so let's start with which ones you might want to avoid:
- Row seven is the bulkhead. Some people will undoubtedly enjoy these seats — no one reclines into you, and the bulkhead wall doesn't extend all the way to the floor, so there's ample under-seat storage below the two first-class recliners in front. However, two of the biggest drawbacks include immovable armrests and the fact that the seat-back screens swivel out from in between each seat.
- Row 11 is missing windows. If you're an aviation enthusiast who enjoys staring out the window, you'll be disappointed if you end up in Row 11.
- Row 12 and Row 14 each have just one window, compared to the two you'll find in other rows. This isn't a dealbreaker for me, but if you're after the perfect wing-view shot, you may prefer to sit elsewhere.
- Row 15 is right in front of the exit row. As such, these seats don't recline, so I'd recommend steering clear of these six spots.
As for where you should sit, anywhere else in the Economy Plus section works, but I have a strong preference for exit row 21. Here you'll find a total of 38 inches of pitch — eight more than in standard coach — and the seats recline as normal.
The only downside is that the window armrest is built into the exit door, so it's not nearly as comfortable as those you'll find elsewhere on the jet.
United Economy on the Boeing 737 MAX 8
With 96 seats, most flyers will end up sitting in the standard economy section. Good thing these are some of the best coach seats in the United fleet.
After all, you'll find a seat-back monitor, large overhead bins, power outlets and USB ports available throughout the cabin, including in economy.
Pitch is roughly 30 inches, so it could definitely feel tight depending on your body size.
The only seats to avoid in coach are those in the last row 38 due to limited recline. Otherwise, the remaining rows are roughly equal.
I'd try sitting as close to the front as possible for a faster deplaning experience, but otherwise, you can't really go wrong with other coach seats.
Bottom line
United's newest jet, the Boeing 737 MAX 8, is now flying the friendly skies. With an upgraded onboard experience, this is the plane that'll likely win United some awards. While the enhancements span nose to tail, all seats aren't created equally.
It pays to know where to sit, so that you avoid missing window views, and instead maximize your legroom.
In first-class, you'll find me in row two or three. In Economy Plus, I'll be in exit row 21, and in coach, I'll choose a seat as close to the front as possible.
If you notice that one of my preferred seats is already assigned when booking, perhaps we'll be on the same flight. If so, come up and say hi!

Went to terminal 5 b lounge excellent looking food. Long hall flight in Premium Economy. The seat was similar to economy seats, but bulkhead gives a private cabin feel with two windows. Tray Table in armrest restricts with, and foldaway TV was tiny and at awkward angle. The entertainment selection was severely limited, and the touch screen slow and unresponsive. The worst was the basic economy food, though. For a flight from Sichuan, China, one of the food capitals of the world, the food…
we were very lucky to receive two seats with an empty seat in between...it gave us much more leg room, and we were comfortable for the flight. The return flight was the same thing, but the plane was delayed for 2 and a 1/2 hours- the plane was held up in Florida, and so we arrived at yul at 2.30am. Not good, as no one came to pick us up, and we had to pay…

United airlines' economy plus seats: 5 fast facts.
The United Economy Plus seats offer a few extra inches of legroom.
- Extra legroom & recline: Economy Plus offers 33-38" pitch, 3-5" recline.
- Seating location advantage: In front of the standard economy seats.
- Multiple options for seating upgrades: Subscription plans start at $599; MileagePlus members - free upgrades.
The world’s largest airline by destinations served offers Economy Plus seats on all its mainline flights and most United Express flights. Economy Plus seats are superior to the Standard Economy in terms of location and legroom. Simple Flying compiled a list of five fast facts about Economy Plus seats, as highlighted by United Airlines .
1 Extra legroom
Six extra inches of seat pitch.
United Airlines offers an extra few inches of legroom in the Economy Plus compared to the standard economy seating. The Economy Plus is available on all single-aisle and widebody aircraft. United’s standard economy seats have a width of 17.3” - 18.4” and a 30” - 31” pitch. Moreover, the standard economy seats can recline 2” - 3”.
On the other hand, United’s Economy Plus seats have a seat pitch of 33” - 38”, depending on the aircraft type and configuration. The Economy Plus seats also have a greater recline of 3” - 5”, at least an inch or two more than in standard economy. Passengers can select their seats in the front of the cabin, just behind the First/Business and Premium cabins.
2 Seat location
In front of the standard economy seats.
Airlines are known to charge a higher price for seats with extra legroom. Generally, those seats can be anywhere on the aircraft, including the first row of the section and exit rows. United Airlines has designated a separate section for Economy Plus seats in front of the standard economy seats.
United Airlines Improves Passenger Experience With Updated Lobby Signage
Flying in an Economy Plus seat means passengers board early (based on the boarding group) and have ample time to settle in their seats. Passengers also deboard before the general public, allowing an extra element of comfort in the Economy Plus. Passengers can save time and hassle at the airport, particularly when making tight connections.
3 Economy Plus availability
Available on all united airlines flights.
United Airlines is the world’s largest airline by number of destinations served and third-largest by fleet size and revenue. United Airlines has made its Economy Plus seating available on all United mainline flights. These include the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, and international flights. Most United Express flights also offer Economy Plus seats, depending on the route and the assigned equipment (aircraft).
United Airlines operates nearly 5,000 daily flights, including its subsidiary United Express. Passengers can book Economy Plus seats on nearly 350 destinations worldwide. United operates a fleet of over 950 narrowbody and widebody aircraft.
4 Annual subscription
Economy plus subscription starts at $599.
United Airlines offers a subscription plan for its Economy Plus seats. Depending on the type of plan and the region of interest, travelers can subscribe to a yearly plan. Subscription plans start at $599 and go up to $1,299, depending on the plan.
FBI Thanks United Airlines Staff For Excellent Customer Service

“Sit in Economy Plus on every eligible flight for a year, starting at $599. You can buy a subscription for yourself and up to eight companions. You can also customize your plan based on where you travel most.”
5 Free upgrade with MileagePlus
Mileageplus premier members can upgrade for free.
United Airlines MileagePlus members get free access to Economy Plus seats wherever available. Depending on the Premium membership status, passengers can reserve Economy Plus seats for themselves and their companions. Premium Silver and Gold members get free seats for the primary passenger and a companion. The Premier Platinum and 1K members get to reserve Economy Plus seats for up to eight companions at no cost.
Frequent travelers, especially those who travel for work on a specific route and airline (United in this case), can take advantage of the offer by enrolling in MileagePlus.

Where United Airlines Is Flying Its High Capacity 364-Seat Boeing 777s
- United Airlines' non-Extended Range Boeing 777-200s have 364 seats in an economy-heavy, premium-light configuration.
- They are used on high-capacity, short- to medium-range leisure routes.
- Los Angeles-Honolulu, Chicago O'Hare-Orlando, and Denver-Washington Dulles are the most-served routes in February.
United has 19 so-called 'domestic' Boeing 777-200s, based on ch-aviation information, although not all are active. They are the non-ER versions and the original 777 variant. Few of the medium-haul aircraft were produced and even fewer remain. United's non-ER aircraft have had more seats added over the years, changing their economics and use. (It is a shame the above photo was not in the new livery, but I like it.)
The non-ER 777-200s have 364 seats, including the dreaded 3-4-3 layout in economy, although that is less problematic on the routes on which they fly. The high-capacity, leisure-heavy, medium-range 777-200 has low seat-mile costs, helped by being paid off, influencing where they are used.
The aircraft included N774UA, the second 777 to roll off the production line. At 29.6 years old, the high-cycle aircraft is the world's oldest active Triple Seven. It was delivered to United in 1996, making the carrier the launch customer of the variant – and the 777 generally. The image below is from 2000. (My favorite registration is still N777UA.)
According to Flightradar24 , on February 9, the day I am writing this article, N774UA arrived in Chicago O'Hare from Los Angeles at 05:39. It will fly to Denver before continuing to Honolulu, where it will stay overnight.
3,000+ Daily Passengers: United Airlines 10 Busiest Routes In 2023
Where the non-ers are flying.
Analyzing schedules using Cirium data shows that the 364-seat aircraft were used to Europe as recently as 2019 and to Asia until 2020 (although only from Guam). Things have changed considerably.
The map below shows where they are scheduled to fly in February . Las Vegas only appears because of the Super Bowl. The shortest route is just 414 miles (666 km) between San Francisco and Los Angeles, while the longest is the 3,904-mile (6,283 km) link from Houston Intercontinental to Honolulu.
Across all airport pairs, the average stage length is 1,950 miles (3,138 km). In February 2019, when they were used to Europe and more, it was 3,797 miles (6,111 km). (Shame it wasn't 6,777.)
There are a typical 45 daily flights by the non-ER 777s in February. Denver sees the variant the most, followed by Chicago O'Hare, Honolulu, Houston Intercontinental, and Los Angeles. Notice that Newark does not have flights in the examined month, but they return on March 31, the day northern airlines switch to summer schedules.
Served up to double daily
Ignoring a handful of routes that will see high-density equipment either on a one-off or otherwise very infrequent basis, 14 routes will be daily. Naturally, many are hub-to-hub services, which, of course, also connect major cities. They also include all three international airport pairs: daily from Chicago O'Hare, Denver, and Houston Intercontinental to Cancun.
A further six routes will operate almost, but not quite, daily. But those airport pairs with the most flights this month are as follows:
- Los Angeles to Honolulu : double daily 'domestic' 777-200 flights
- Chicago O'Hare to Orlando : double daily
- Denver to Washington Dulles : up to double daily

From between the sidelines and the endzones on the lower seating tier, the Lower Level Corner sections offer fans some of the best places to be for determining whether the ball breaks the plane of the goal line. Seats closest to the field in the Lower Level Corner sections will be found in Row 1, and most sections will have as many as 36 numbered rows of seating. With the concourse entry tunnel located at the top of the section, fans in the lower rows will have to walk the furthest to enjoy their close views in the lower seating rows. Some of the best lower seats for staying in the sun will be found in corner sections 121-123, while the corner sections on the west side offer more shade.

Carl Icahn wins seats on JetBlue board after taking stake in airline
- Carl Icahn won two seats on the board of JetBlue Airways.
- The new board seats came less than a week after he disclosed a nearly 10% stake in JetBlue and that talks were underway for board representation.
- JetBlue has been losing money since 2020 and new CEO Joanna Geraghty has promised to cut costs and restore reliability.
In this article
Carl Icahn won his push for seats on JetBlue Airways' board of directors, according to a statement from the airline Friday, days after disclosing a nearly 10% stake in the New York-based airline and that he was in talks for board representation there.
The two new directors are Jesse Lynn, general counsel of Icahn Enterprises, and Steven Miller, a portfolio manager of Icahn Capital.
Shares of JetBlue were up about 4% in after-hours trading following the announcement.
The JetBlue investment isn't Icahn's first investment in the airline industry. In one of his more infamous activist campaigns, the corporate raider took TWA private in the late 1980s, and the airline struggled and filed for bankruptcy.
Icahn said in disclosing his JetBlue stake that he believes the shares are undervalued. JetBlue's stock is down more than 19% over the past 12 months as of Friday's close. The NYSE Arca Airline Index, which tracks the broader sector, is up about 7% during the same period.
JetBlue's new CEO, Joanna Geraghty, took the helm Monday, and the carrier has appointed a pair of airline veterans to get it back on track.
"Building on our distinct brand and unique value proposition, we are focused on delivering value to our shareholders and all of our stakeholders, and we welcome the contributions of our new board members as we move forward with that common goal," Geraghty said in a statement on Friday.
JetBlue hasn't posted a profit since before the Covid-19 pandemic and has been cutting costs, trying to become more reliable after a post-Covid travel surge and a blocked merger with budget carrier Spirit Airlines . A federal judge last month ruled against a combination of the two airlines, citing reduced competition.
JetBlue had argued it needed the tie-up to help it compete against the largest American carriers. JetBlue and Spirit are appealing the judge's ruling. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Even if you aren’t on this special flight, Delta travelers will also have prime eclipse-viewing opportunities on five additional routes on April 8, so don’t forget your protective viewing glasses if you’re on these flights:
- DL 5699, DTW-HPN, 2:59 pm EST departure, ERJ-175
- DL 924, LAX-DFW, 8:40 am PST departure, A320
- DL 2869, LAX-SAT, 9:00 am PST departure, A319
- DL 1001, SLC-SAT, 10:08 am MST departure, A220-300
- DL 1683, SLC-AUS, 9:55 am MST departure, A320
And for those who would rather catch the solar event from the ground, Delta flies to many destinations that are within the path of totality, including AUS, San Antonio (SAT), and Little Rock, Ark. (LIT).
“The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” said Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist. “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”
For booking information, visit delta.com .
*While Delta flight plans have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality, this is subject to change due to factors outside of Delta’s control such as weather and air traffic control that could impact timing and aircraft.
