How to Start and Decorate a Diary

Diaries are a great way to record your daily life, thoughts, and feelings. They can also be used as planners to keep track of upcoming events. Unfortunately, a store bought diary does not always feel very personal. Luckily, this is easy to fix with some decorating and knowing how to start off. With some time and creativity, you are sure to end up with a unique diary that will be something truly special to you!

Decorating the Outside of a Diary

Step 1 Consider decorating the outside of your journal.

  • Cover your finished journal with decoupage glue (such as Mod Podge) or contact paper to protect the paper from getting dirty or wet.
  • If you want multiple colors, work with one color at a time. Let each color dry first before moving onto the next.
  • Make sure that your sealer is glossy. If it is matte, your glitter won't sparkle anymore.
  • Sealing the glitter is important. It will prevent the journal from shedding all over the place. Consider sealing the edges of the cover as well.
  • Cover the spine of your journal with contrasting tape. For example, if you use patterned tape for the cover, use solid-colored tape for the spine.

Decorating the Inside of a Diary

  • If you don't want to draw, you can always use colorful stickers instead!
  • This is great for calendars. For example, if you have a party coming up, add a doodle of a cake, present, or balloon!
  • Another idea is to glue items inside your diary that have something to do with the entry, such as maps, postcards, ticket stubs, and postage stamps!
  • Try using caps, bubble letters, block letters, or even cursive.
  • To create glowing text, write your word first, then trace over each letter using a highlighter. [6] X Research source
  • Write "My Birthday List" using bubble letters, then draw a cloud-shaped outline around it using a highlighter.
  • Turn the background into a banner by cutting a V-shaped notch into each end before putting it down.
  • You don't have to decorate every page, nor do you have to use the same border each time.

Starting a Diary

  • Write your name, the title of your diary in large letters.
  • If you want, you can add a message that says "TOP SECRET" or "KEEP OUT", but be warned, if someone finds your diary, this will most likely make them want to read it even more.
  • Use lots of bright colors. Sparkly or metallic gel pens are great for this!
  • Decorate the corners and borders with doodles and stickers.

Step 3 Consider starting with some information about yourself.

  • You can find all sorts of writing prompts online.
  • Writing your observations about the world and people around you are a great way to beat writer's block.

Step 5 Make it a habit of writing every day.

Community Q&A

Community Answer

  • Don't ever write something that isn't true! Later on, you might think it was and make a mistake that could change your life forever. Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 0
  • You can draw and write poems, stories, or lyrics in your diary too! Remember title and date! Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • Don't write very secret things if you know someone can easily get access to your diary! Make a fake diary and a real one. Write fake entries in the fake diary and leave it out in the open. When you catch him or her, it'll be very embarrassing for them to explain what they were doing. That'll teach them a lesson! Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Tips from our Readers

  • If you want to be able to re-read your old diary, like in 10-15 years, writing in pencil is a no-go because it smudges and fades over time. Writing in pen is better for that. Some erasable pens fade in certain temperatures too, so you'll be better off doing research for long-lasting ink.

Design Inspiration

Designing a diary can be a fun and creative way to express yourself. There are countless design ideas and inspiration that can help you create a personalized and unique diary. When it comes to decorating a diary at home, the possibilities are endless. From themes to patterns and color schemes, there are various ways to make your diary reflect your personality and style.

One popular design idea for decorating diaries is using themes. Whether it’s a nature-inspired theme with floral patterns and earthy colors, or a minimalist theme with simple lines and monochrome tones, choosing a theme can help give your diary a cohesive look. Themes can also be based on personal interests such as travel, music, or art, allowing you to incorporate related elements into your diary decoration.

In addition to themes, patterns play a crucial role in diary decoration. Geometric patterns, watercolor designs, and abstract shapes are just some of the many options available for adding visual interest to your diary pages. Mixing different patterns can create an eclectic and dynamic look, while sticking to one pattern can result in a more uniform and polished appearance.

When it comes to color schemes, the right combination of colors can enhance the overall aesthetic of your decorated diary. Whether you prefer bold, bright colors or soft pastel hues, choosing a color scheme that resonates with you is essential. You may also consider seasonal color palettes or trendy color combinations for added flair.

Decorating your own diary at home not only allows you to unleash your creativity but also provides an opportunity for self-expression. Choosing themes, patterns, and color schemes that resonate with you is key when decorating your diary.

DIY Techniques

Decorating a diary at home can be a fun and creative way to personalize your journaling experience. There are various DIY techniques that you can use to decorate your diary and make it truly unique. Here are some step-by-step DIY techniques for decorating a diary, such as hand-lettering, doodling, and collage:

  • Hand-Lettering: Hand-lettering is a beautiful way to add artistic flair to your diary. You can use different types of pens or markers to create intricate and decorative lettering for headings, quotes, or important dates in your diary.
  • Doodling: Doodling is a whimsical and playful way to decorate your diary. You can let your imagination run wild and fill the pages of your diary with doodles of flowers, animals, patterns, or anything else that inspires you.
  • Collage: Collage is a versatile technique that allows you to create visually stunning pages in your diary. You can use images from magazines, personal photos, or even pieces of decorative paper to create thematic collages that reflect your interests and experiences.

These DIY techniques for decorating a diary are accessible to everyone, regardless of artistic ability. They allow you to express yourself creatively and add a personal touch to your journaling practice. Whether you prefer elegant hand-lettering, whimsical doodles, or intricate collages, there are endless possibilities for making your diary uniquely yours.

Incorporating these techniques into your diary decoration process will not only enhance the visual appeal of your journal but also make it more meaningful and reflective of your personality. By taking the time to decorate your diary using these DIY techniques, you’ll be creating a special space for self-expression and creativity that you’ll cherish for years to come. So gather your materials and get ready to infuse creativity into every page of your diary.

Personalization Tips

When it comes to decorating and personalizing a diary at home, there are numerous creative ways to make it uniquely yours. Adding personal touches to your diary not only makes it visually appealing but also adds sentimental value. One of the easiest ways to personalize a diary is by adding photos.

You can print out your favorite pictures and paste them on the pages of your diary. This could be pictures with friends, family, or even scenic photographs that inspire you.

In addition to photos, incorporating quotes that resonate with you can add depth and meaning to your diary. Whether it’s inspirational quotes, lines from your favorite book or movie, or even personal affirmations, including quotes can help set the tone for your journaling experience. Furthermore, adding personal mementos such as tickets from memorable events, dried flowers, or small trinkets can create a tactile and nostalgic element in your diary.

Creative Prompts

Embarking on the journey of decorating a diary at home is not only a creative endeavor but also a therapeutic one. As you personalize your diary, it’s important to pair the decorating process with creative writing prompts to kickstart your journaling journey. By combining these two forms of self-expression, you can delve deeper into your thoughts, feelings, and experiences while creating a visually captivating diary that reflects your inner world.

Reflective Prompts

One way to enhance the diary decorating process is to include reflective writing prompts that encourage introspection. Consider prompts such as “What am I grateful for today?”, “What are my hopes and dreams for the future?”, or “What has brought me joy recently?”. Pairing these prompts with decorative elements in your diary can create a powerful synergy between visual art and written expression.

Prompt-Based Storytelling

Using storytelling prompts in your diary can be an exciting way to unleash your creativity. These prompts can range from writing a short fictional story inspired by a particular illustration in your diary to creating character profiles based on the decorative elements you’ve added. This approach not only adds an element of fun and whimsy to your journal but also nurtures your imaginative prowess.

Mood-Setting Prompts

Incorporating mood-setting prompts into your diary can set the tone for self-reflection and emotional processing. Consider using prompts like “Describe a moment when you felt completely at peace.”, “Write about a time when you overcome adversity.”, or “Capture the essence of today’s emotions through colors and shapes”. Expressing these reflections alongside visual enhancements in your diary creates a holistic outlet for emotional catharsis and self-awareness.

By incorporating creative writing prompts into the process of decorating your diary at home, you can infuse deeper meaning, introspection, and storytelling into this personal keepsake. The combination of visual art and written expression not only elevates the aesthetic appeal of your diary but also cultivates a rich tapestry of memories, emotions, and personal growth within its pages.

Maintenance and Care

Decorating a diary at home is a creative and personalized way to add a personal touch to your journaling experience. However, once you have put in all the effort to decorate your diary, it’s important to ensure that it remains in good condition. Proper maintenance and care can help preserve the decorations and protect the pages of your decorated diary for years to come.

Protecting the Pages

One of the most important aspects of maintaining a decorated diary is ensuring that the pages remain protected. Consider using page protectors or plastic sleeves to shield decorated pages from dust, dirt, and accidental spills. These protective covers also help prevent decorations from rubbing against each other and getting damaged.

Preserving Decorations

To ensure that the decorations on your diary stay intact, it’s essential to use suitable adhesives and materials. Opt for acid-free glue and adhesives to prevent yellowing or deterioration of the decorations over time. Additionally, consider using clear sealants or laminating sheets for delicate decorations such as pressed flowers or intricate designs to safeguard them from fading or becoming damaged.

Caring for Your Decorated Diary

When it comes to caring for your decorated diary, handle it with gentle care to avoid smudging or tearing any decorations. Store your diary in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Regularly wipe down the cover and pages with a soft cloth to remove any dust or debris that may accumulate over time.

By following these maintenance tips, you can prolong the life of your decorated diary while keeping its beautiful embellishments safe and well-preserved for years to come.

In conclusion, decorating a diary at home is a wonderful way to infuse creativity into your daily life and personal expression. Personalizing your diary not only adds charm and character to the pages but also allows you to reflect your unique personality and style. By using simple materials like stickers, washi tapes, pens, markers, and more, you can transform an ordinary diary into a personalized work of art.

When it comes to design inspiration, the possibilities are endless. From colorful themes to elegant patterns and vibrant color schemes, there are countless ways to decorate your diary that perfectly suits your taste. Additionally, DIY techniques such as hand-lettering, doodling, and collage provide a creative outlet for self-expression and artistic exploration.

To fully personalize your diary and make it uniquely yours, consider adding photos, quotes, and personal mementos that hold special meaning to you. This will not only make the diary visually appealing but also serve as a cherished keepsake for years to come. So, unleash your creativity by exploring different creative prompts paired with the diary decorating process and jumpstart your journaling journey.

This post is all about personal diary decoration ideas.

Move over girlies. Personal diaries are no longer just for kids.

The adult version might look a little more like a self-discovery or gratitude journal , but it’s a personal diary nonetheless.

If you’re tired of staring at a dull, generic cover, this post is for you.

I’ve gathered some personal diary decoration ideas that will transform the look of your diary or journal into something uniquely you!

15 Creative Decorating Ideas for Your Diary

When something is “pretty,” I feel more motivated to use it. If you’re the same way, you’re going to love these diary decorations.

cute diary decoration ideas

1. Journal Cover

I’m mentioning this first because many of the ideas below can be incorporated into your journal cover. There are endless ways to jazz up the front of your diary using printer paper, glue, scissors, fabric, needle and thread, ribbons, you name it.

I particularly love the combination of lace, pressed flowers, and scrapbooking stickers.

2. Marker Board

Did you know they make “peel and stick” dry-erase board material that can be cut to any size or shape?

If you’re not really into fabric or stickers, you should give these a go.

You literally just cut, peel, and stick to either your notebook cover or any internal page that you want to make “dry erase” style.

(This would be an amazing addition to a junk journal !)

3. Patches and Embellishments

Try embellishing your journal by sewing on buttons, ribbons, beads, or fabric.

If you are using a large notebook, you can even sew on patches to give your journal a more masculine or feminine look.

This would be a great way to create custom sections or dividers to help you quickly find the page you need.

4. Kaleidoscope Cover

Do you remember kaleidoscopes as a kid? I was mesmerized by all the colors, shapes, and movement.

Why not incorporate that fun design into your diary? It’s a simply way to decorate your diary with nothing more than paper.

Just cut out several squares (or a variety of shapes in varying sizes) of colored tissue or construction paper and arrange them into a design.

Glue usually works better than tape. Just be sure to apply the glue lightly so they don’t seep through the pages. Glue sticks may be best.

5. Fabric Overlay

If you really want to make your diary attractive , go for a fabric overlay.

You can attach fabric or paper to any cover using double-sided tape, a glue gun, Mod Podge, or even staples.

Check your store’s fabric scrap bin to get great discounts.

6. Zipper Design

personal diary first page ideas

If you want to decorate the first page of your personal diary with something special, try a zipper!

They are surprisingly easy to sew onto a page , and they can actually be functional.

7. Binder Clips

Why use a boring bookmark when you can kick things up a notch with a beautiful binder clip.

You’re no longer limited to the dull black ones we grew up with in school. They have color-coded clips, metallic sheen-style, even monogrammed clips!

Besides holding your place in your diary, binder clips are good for attaching pictures, index cards, or memos to your pages.

8. Altered Photo

I like the idea of incorporating altered or antiqued photos into any type of journal . If you fancy yourself a photographer, try snapping photos of your day-to-day life to preserve in your diary.

An especially whimsical idea I saw recently was a cover made from a collage of different selfies , sporting different facial expressions that express all the facets of you—perfect for a personal diary!

9. Magazine Pictures

You can use magazine pictures to decorate your journal cover by arranging them in any design.

Magazines are typically printed on super thin paper, so you may want to glue it to construction paper or even a trimmed piece of cardboard before adhering to your journal.

Beyond pictures, try cutting out affirmation words or powerful quotes that inspire you.

10. Sewing Machine

You can make your journal cover more creative by using a sewing machine to sew beads, buttons, ribbons, and other decorative materials.

One benefit of this type of diary decoration is that you can snip it off and rearrange it if you don’t like the placement.

How can I make my diary look nice?

11. Water-Soluble Paints

Water-soluble paints can be used to create all sorts of designs.

If your diary is more of an art journal , you can use watercolor markers, such as Copic graphic markers , instead of water-soluble paints. The colors are vibrant, and you can create precise designs with them.

12. Stencils

This is one of my favorite ways to decorate a diary on the inside . Using stencils gives your journal a professional look, even if you aren’t particularly crafty.

You can go for the typical stripes and polka dots, or let your creativity flow with florals and animal prints.

13. Glow-in-the-Dark Stickers

A new way to decorate your journal cover is by using glow-in-the-dark stickers so you can see the designs even at night.

If a burst of inspiration hits late at night or early morning and your partner is still asleep, this is a creative way to find your diary without turning the light on.

14. Magnets

Did you know they make magnets with adhesive backs ? You can stick them practically anywhere!

Magnets are a fun way to give your diary a more secretive, “locked” feel.

To make a magnetic closure for your journal, you simply peel and stick, lining up the two magnets on opposite pages.

15. Seed Packets

If you love gardening, this one is for you! Try transforming your diary cover into a collage of seed packets!

Many seed packets are delightfully colorful, so they’re naturally pleasing to the eye.

How Do You Decorate Your Diary or Journal?

Bear in mind as you pick your diary decorations that you’re not limited to just one. Mix and match all sorts of materials and concepts for a fun, eclectic look. Make it you!

Do you have any cute diary decoration ideas to share? I’d love to hear them!

How to decorate your diary

homework diary decoration

If you like putting your thoughts, plans and experiences on paper, a diary or journal will probably be your best choice. A diary is essentially your ‘storybook’ that carries all of your life events and ideas, so why not personalize it to represent who you are?

There are various ways to decorate a diary, but you don’t need a ton of accessories to do so. Here are a few different ways to decorate your diary pages, and all you need are some colored pens and highlighters. Check out https://bit.ly/stabiloBTSM to stock up on STABILO point 88 fineliners, Pen 68 fibre-tip pens and swing cool highlighters!

Most diaries come with blank, lined, grid or dotted pages that look boring, so you can start by creating patterns! Before you write on a new page, use highlighters that come in lighter or pastel shades to draw larger abstract patterns. The swing cool highlighters with 1mm & 4mm line widths are perfect to color in large areas and create thinner lines.

To accentuate the pattern with more details, go for a Pen 68 fibre-tip pen so you can create lines and dots with thinner strokes. The more colors you use, the better! Use your favorite colors so your diary represents your personality. Try STABILO swing cool pastel highlighters and Pen 68 fibre-tip pens in fluorescent and pastel shades from https://bit.ly/stabiloBTSM !

2. Mini illustrations

Next, decorate your diary pages with some mini illustrations! Creating illustrations will not only set the theme for your page, it also helps you visualize your experiences, ideas, events, places or things you are writing about. They don’t have to look super intricate or complex, simply let your creativity lead the way.

For these mini illustrations, use a pen with a fine tip like our point 88 fineliners to outline and draw the details. To color in the spaces of the illustrations, try using our Pen 68 fibre-tip pens that have a slightly thicker tip but still allow plenty of control.

3. Colored doodles

Simple colored doodles can also make your diary pages look a lot more interesting! While recapping the day, week or month on your diary, you can doodle about your favorite things or most memorable events, which will also help you create a lasting impression and remind you of those memories when you look back at them one day.

Sketch your doodles with a pencil first, then outline with a black pen before you color the doodles to bring them to life. Use the point 88 fineliners and Pen 68 fibre-tip to do the trick! You can find them in all sorts of colors from https://bit.ly/stabiloBTSM .

4. Colored and patterned titles

With all your writing mostly in black or blue, making the titles of each page stand out with colors and patterns will set the character of your diary. Instead of writing the titles with your regular handwriting, try writing them with different font styles that will leave white space within the letters.

You can play around with different combinations of colors and create a gradient or layered effect for each title. Besides, you could create simple patterns like polka dots or lines as the background with STABILO swing cool highlighters, then write the titles over the patterns. Decorate your diary together with STABILO products from https://bit.ly/stabiloBTSM today!
