Assignments in Brightspace

Create assignments in Brightspace to promote student interaction and learning progress in your class.

Assignments often make up a large portion of student interactions within a course. They can include  active learning ,  group work ,  formative assessments , culminating projects and much more.

Brightspace’s Assignments tool offers robust features to customize instructions, submissions and assessment type. Tools that complement Assignments include Content, Rubrics, and Grades. As always, ensure any embedded multimedia or attachments are accessible for all students.

For additional support beyond this page, visit Brightspace’s Create an assignment  webpage.

On this page:

Preparing an assignment.

There are several considerations to make before creating an assignment. Although assignments can be edited later on, it will be more time efficient to plan ahead.

General Preparation

Before creating an assignment, it is helpful to have some information upfront such as the assignment name, description and point value. If your syllabus is finalized, you may also want to include the due date while creating the new assignment.

Adding a due date to an assignment will enable it to populate in the course schedule.

Advanced Preparation

  • Rubrics : Consider how this assignment will be graded. If grading with a rubric, it is best to first create the rubric and then attach it to the assignment.
  • Grade Categories : You may want to create weighted categories within the Grades Tool  before creating assignments. This will allow you to categorize assignments as they populate the grade book.
  • Assignment Category : This category is separate from the grade categories. It serves more as a grouping and organization system. For example, this can be used to categorize items such as homework, presentations or to provide more granular detail.
  • Release Conditions : You may choose to limit access to this assignment until a specific date or after completing a prerequisite task such as a quiz or discussion post. Create the first task prior to creating the assignment.
  • Group Assignments : In order to assign collaborative assignments, the groups must already be created.
  • Special Access:  Special access permissions allow you to set different availability dates and times for specific users. For example, you could extend the deadline for users who require remedial help or who are submitting work beyond the original scope of the assignment. Learn more about Special Access.

Where to Build Assignments

There are several ways to develop and access course assignments.

  • From an existing module within the Contents tab ( Upload/Create and then New Assignment ).
  • From a placeholder using the Course Builder tool .
  • From the Assignments tab.
  • From the Course Admin page.

For the purposes of this page, we will focus building from the Assignments tab as this pathway provides the most support resources and overall functionality. If you choose a different method, scroll through the parts of this page that are relevant for all assignments.

Creating an Assignment

Use the  Assignments tool to create and edit assignments, view student submissions, track the grading progress of an assignment, associate assignments to rubrics and learning outcomes and return submissions with grades and feedback.

Adding a  Grade Out Of  automatically adds this item to the grade book. If you have already set up categories in the grade book, you can select the category by clicking the drop-down under Category in Submission & Completion

Editing an Assignment

  • On the Assignments main page, you will see a list of all your existing assignments.
  • Locate the assignment you want to change and select the chevron icon  [⌵]  to the right of the assignment's name.
  • Here you can edit, copy or delete the assignment. You can also edit the assignment within a module. Please note that this functionality is limited.

Placing Assignments in Modules

  • Within the Content  tool, locate the module in which you would like students to access the assignment.
  • After selecting this module, click Existing Activities , then select Assignments .
  • Select the assignment you would like to add, searching by name if necessary.
  • Then drag the assignment so that the order/placement within the module is correct.

Adding Restrictions and Rubrics to an Assignment

You may want to set additional conditions to an assignment, such as availability, release conditions, rubrics and/or special access.

Add Restrictions to an Assignment (Video)

Adding Rubrics to Assignments

Before attaching a rubric, ensure it is complete and its status is set to published .

  • Create or edit the assignment (see above).
  • Locate the  Evaluation & Feedback category in the right-hand column and expand the section.
  • Select  Add Rubric and choose an existing rubric or create a new rubric.
  • Click Save and Close.

Using a Rubric

First, select the submission you would like to assess. The rubric will populate on the righthand side of each submission under the Evaluation and Feedback header. Open the associated rubric and select the performance level for each of the criterion. Use the preassigned feedback or customize sections as desired. If the rubric uses points or percentages, the grade will calculate automatically, however, you can manually change category scores, total score and overall score. When finished with the rubric, select Close .

Grading an Assignment

There are several ways to grade in Brightspace. If grading submissions from a single assignment, locate it within the Assignments tool. If grading submissions from several assignments, you can use the Quick Eval tool.

If using the Quick Eval tool, all submissions that need grading will populate here including assignments, quizzes and discussions. Therefore, if you are looking to grade a specific assignment, it will likely be more efficient to do so from the assignment itself within the Assignments tool.

Brightspace Assignments

The Brightspace Assignments tool provides the functionality of creating and editing assignments, setting up submission details, associating rubrics, viewing and grading submissions, and providing feedback. This unit will guide you through the steps to create a simple Brightspace Assignment.

The place where all assignments can be accessed, edited, graded, and created. Students can see all course assignments that the instructor has made visible.

Special Access

An option in Brightspace assignments that allows you to set exceptions or special access to specific students or groups of students.

Anonymous Marking

A feature that hides student names when you are grading, used to reduce the effects of unconscious grading bias. Anonymous grading can also increase students’ confidence in the fairness of evaluation.

Consider Multiple Submission Formats

Can the learning outcomes you are measuring be achieved by written submissions only or also by other types of student work, such as video submissions, audio only, or even visual artwork? All of these submission formats are possible in Brightspace assignments.

Let students know how they will be graded

In the assignment description, tell students how they will be graded. If you are using a rubric, share it with them. If you are going to grade anonymously, let them know. This helps students understand the expectations for the assignment.

Evaluate Originality Checker Needs

The Brightspace Assignments tool does not have a built-in originality checker. If you are creating a high-stakes assignment, you may want to create it in Turnitin, an external tool integrated into Brightspace and accessed from the Existing Activities menu in content modules.

How do I create a group assignment in Brightspace?

Brightspace , Instructor Help

This article shows you how to create a group assignment in Brightspace. We recommend that you know the basics of creating assignments as well as setting up groups before attempting this protocol. There are two ways of making a group assignment in Brightspace:

  • Make the groups first by using the Groups tool and then create the Assignment from within the Groups tool.
  • Create the assignment first using the Assignments tool and then link it to groups from within the Assignments tool. These groups will need to have been created beforehand.

Method 1 : Using the Groups Tool (recommended)

  • Access the course you would like to work on in Brightspace . From there, go to  Course Tools in the blue navigation bar and select Groups .

Select the "New Category" button under the "Manage groups" heading.

Click the “New Category” button.

Category information includes a mandatory field for "category name", a text box for a description, and a drop-down menu for enrolment type. The default enrolment setting is "number of groups - no auto enrolments".

Fill in the group set-up information.

  • In Additional Options , click Expand the Additional Options to show the Assignment setting.

Under the "Additional Options" heading you can select the box to the left of "set up assignments" and specify the type of submission from the drop-down menu (respectively: file, text, on paper, observed in person).

Create a group assignment by selecting “Set up assignments” and the type of submission you would like.

The assignment set-up page appears, with a place for a name, instructions, attachments, and submission/completion/categorization options. At the top, you default to the "properties" tab, followed by restrictions, and finally objectives.

Fill in the assignment information.

  • After you finish setting up your assignment, click Save and Close .

Method 2 : Using the Assignments Tool

Under the "Assignments" heading, "New Assignment" is the first button, followed by "Edit Categories" and a drop-down menu for "More actions".

Click the blue “New Assignment” button to start.

The assignment set-up page appears, with a place for a name, instructions, attachments, and submission/completion/categorization options. At the top, you default to the "properties" tab, followed by restrictions, and finally objectives. Select the radio button to the right of "group assignment" under "Submission, completion, and categorization" and then select the group category from the drop-down menu immediately under it.

Choose the “Group assignment” option and select the group category from the drop-down menu to specify how the assignment groups will be decided.

  • Configure the other settings, such as those for Submissions , Evaluation and Feedback , Restrictions . For more information about how to set up assignments, please visit How do I create an assignment in Brightspace?
  • Once you are happy with all the settings, click Save and Close .

For further assistance, please contact us at [email protected] .

Instructional Technology Spotlight – Integrated Tools for Instructors to Consider

Posted by Michael Coley on Monday, February 19, 2024 in Spotlight .

This month, our Spotlight on Instructional Technology takes a look at some of the various integrated tools you can use with and in Brightspace. Integrated tools are third-party tools that are not part of Brightspace but can either connect into the platform and/or work independently from it. These tools build out different abilities and uses that can be beneficial to teaching and learning in a variety of different ways. There are numerous different integrated tools that connect to Brightspace and are supported by our team, but for this post, we want to take a look at three specific ones.

Screenshot of a computer interface window that says Create Individual Assignment

First, Video Assignments (formerly known as Bongo) is a tool that allows students to submit videos through Brightspace in order for them to be evaluated similar to doing a presentation in class. This can obviously be useful if the course is 100% online, but even courses that meet entirely in person can make use of this tool by using it as a pathway to help students practice their presentations and get feedback before actually presenting in class. Just as submitting a rough draft and getting feedback helps improve the final draft of a paper or written project, practice rounds of presentations can also help students craft and hone their presentation skills without the pressure and anxiety of presenting in front of a classroom full of people. Additionally, you can have students do peer assessment of each other’s video submissions so that they can give positive and constructive feedback on presentations, speeches, or even practicing speaking a foreign language. We have several guides that outline various features in Video Assignments that may be of use to Instructors as well as Students.

  • Getting Started with Bongo/Video Assignments (Instructor version)
  • How do I create a video assignment?
  • How do I view student submissions?
  • How do I leave feedback on the submissions?
  • How do I view peer feedback on the submissions?
  • How do I grade video assignment submissions?
  • Getting Started with Video Assignments/Bongo (Student version)
  • How do I submit a video assignment?
  • How do I leave feedback for my peers?

Kaltura logo

The second tool we want to take a look at is a specific feature of the Kaltura Media Player that we use in Brightspace. While most people know how to upload and add videos to courses with Kaltura, not everyone knows that you can also build Quizzes in Kaltura videos. This feature is a simple way for instructors to have students watch a video and then answer questions at specific times in that video. For example, if you have a video of demonstrations or situations you want students to respond to, you can add questions at various points throughout the video so that students can respond in time with the video they are watching. This works exceptionally well for gathering feedback throughout an asynchronous video session as well as having students answer how they would respond to a situation before giving them more information as the video continues.

  • Kaltura Support page – “How Does Interactive Video Quizzing Work?”
  • How can I create a video quiz using a video in My Media?
  • How can I grade student responses to a Kaltura Video Quiz?

Gradescope logo

The last tool we will spotlight this month is Gradescope . This tool is made by the same company that makes Turnitin and is designed to make grading on-paper quizzes or exams easier to do at scale. Instructors or students can scan in student submissions, and then Gradescope is able to identify where questions are located on the page, what questions are the same on each student submission, and has a great ability to make grading submissions consistently and quickly. By using a uniform rubric across the entire assignment, graders in Gradescope are able to easily adjust scores for a single question that then are available and can apply to all submissions of the same assignment.

If you are interested in learning more about how Gradescope can work for you, here are a few select resources for your review.

  • Setting Up Gradescope in your Course – This is our own guide on how to set up Gradescope in your Brightspace course.
  • Gradescope Workflow for Instructors – This video walks instructors through the basics of using Gradescope for grading and managing student assignments/submissions.
  • Gradescope Student Workflow Video – This video shows how students can use Gradescope to submit work and view grades and feedback.

If you’re interested in any of the other third-party integrated tools that our team supports, check out the Integrated Edu Tools in Brightspace page for more examples and resources.
