Free History Resources for Kindergarten

By Jeannette Tuionetoa on April 27, 2021

Grab these free history resources for kindergarten to teach history to the youngest of learners in simple and valuable ways.

two children sitting, reading and pointing at a book together with text Free History Resources for Kindergarten

In history classes while in public school, the key to doing well was memorizing names and dates of events.

This mindset and thought process can deter any parent from teaching history to young learners, but that should not be the case.

Who wants to sit around and have our kids memorize a list of facts until the cows come home? Who wouldn’t dread it that?

When we take this pressure off our history lessons, we are able to teach our kids in a much more engaging way.

We are also able to teach history at even earlier ages when that memorization pressure is off.

Kids can learn dates, events, or timeline specifics when they are older for sure. However, we can begin to develop a love for learning history when kids are little.

I think that the keys to teaching kindergarten students history can be really simple, and trying them will be worth it.

These ideas and free history resources for kindergarten can help you teach your young learners.

1. start with your family’s history..

To get kids interested in history, start with something they can relate to. Make a family tree so kids can see how their family history is laid out.

Find out some things about people in your family tree like countries they came from and their professions, and share them with your kids.

2. Storytelling rocks.

Your kids already have positive experiences with storytelling. This is a great way for kids to learn about history as well.

Storytelling is important for a child’s growing knowledge. When kids can retell stories they have learned, it helps you evaluate what they’ve learned. This works well with history lessons at kindergarten age.

3. Try some easy reader/young learner living history books.

Try reading some history-based books for kindergarten. Here are a few lists of books to maybe check out at the local library.

Remember, in kindergarten, your kids will be able to show you their interests. Determine which activities your kids do well with.

If your kids are visual learners, then they will do well with history videos. What if you have crafty kids? When your kids are crafty, making crafts while you teach about history will make the most of their learning experience.

Kids can learn history when they are little, and teaching them history from a young age gives you the opportunity to set the stage for fun history lessons throughout their homeschool journey.

Early American History ~ Lesson Plans and Printables (Introduction and Index)

Introduction.

It’s time for a new school year, and we are busy making plans for our homeschool coop classes starting at the end of August!  This Fall I am team-teaching with another mom who will be offering art and craft projects to complement my lessons in early American history (covering the years 1600 – 1800).  I’ll be writing a detailed blog post for each week’s class, which will include a Lesson Plan, Printables, Resource List, and more.  Ideas for art and craft projects based on what we do in coop will also be included.

Would you like to come along on our 13-week journey back in time?  Following are lists of books and resources that you will need, as well as a suggested class schedule which you can adapt to your own needs.  Each lesson plan will also include additional materials and resources needed specifically for that week.

Additional/Take-Home Activities If you have extra time in class, provide these activities. You can also send them home with the children to help parents and caretakers extend the lesson during the week.

General Resources Needed

  • Posters of Early Americans (optional)
  • Washable Markers, Crayons, and/or Colored Pencils
  • Glue Sticks

Books were chosen based on their accuracy and relevance.  In most cases the books are appropriate in their entirety for ages 4 – 7.  For a few books I plan to edit out some passages due to time constraints and age-appropriateness.

Be sure to check your local library to see if they have some of these books!

California students required to learn 'ethnic studies' face debate over Gaza war, understanding Jews as White

T eachers, activists and parents are arguing over teaching "ethnic studies" in California, a subject that instructs students about oppression in world history , per a recent report.

The subject, which focuses on "Black Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and Asian Americans," encourages students to learn about "oppression" and apply those lessons to the modern world, The New York Times reported Thursday.

But some teachers are pushing for an altered version of the discipline, known as "liberated ethnic studies."

CALIFORNIA SCHOOL TERMINATES CONTRACT WITH CONTROVERSIAL 'WOKE KINDERGARTEN' PROGRAM

"It is truer to how the subject is taught in colleges, but more politically fraught," according to the Times. "It largely excludes the histories of ethnic groups, including Jews, who are typically understood as White within the discipline’s context. (Arab American studies is defined as fitting into Asian American studies.)"

"And it offers lessons that are critical of Israel — and, some argue, antisemitic," the Times reported.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

The Israel-Hamas war and debate over a ceasefire has cast a spotlight on ethnic studies, with some arguing that teaching that Israel is a colonizer nation will worsen antisemitism in the state.

"It’s not appropriate to teach students that Jews are colonizers and have engaged in, quote, ‘land-grabbing,’" senior director for national litigation at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) James Pasch said. "That course content will spread antisemitism throughout our high schools."

Some pro-ethnic studies advocates, like Dylan Rodriguez, have argued that the new academic discipline is "a critical analysis of the way power works in societies."

"When Professor Rodriguez was asked if students enrolled in ethnic studies classes should encounter a competing perspective of Israel’s founding — as a refuge for an oppressed people with deep roots in the region — he acknowledged Jewish ties to the land, and said he was not opposed to assigning writing by Zionists," the Times reported.

"A rigorous study of the creation of Israel," Rodriguez told the Times, "requires a painful coming to terms with certain historic facts. I would analogize that to learning the history of slavery."

A teacher, Guadalupe Cardona, defended liberated ethnic studies.

"A majority of my students have never even studied their own history," Cardona said.

"If someone is going to teach that conflict from a true ethnic studies perspective, it’s going to be critiquing settler colonialism in Palestine," she said.

Democratic state senator Scott Wiener, a supporter of ethnic studies, pointed to the Israel-Hamas war as an important point of conflict for scholars.

"But," he added, "picking one foreign conflict to teach intensively about and demonize one side — that is the home of one-half of all Jews on the planet — is very problematic."

The ADL did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
