Create an Assignment Activity

  • Publication date October 30, 2017

Introduction

The assignment module allows teachers to collect work from students, review it and provide feedback including grades. The work students submit is visible only to the teacher and not to the other students unless a group assignment is selected. Using Moodle for assignments is a great way to make assigning, collecting, and grading student work more efficient while also cutting down on paper use.

Turn editing on by either:

  • Click the gear icon, then choose Turn editing on from the Course administration menu OR
  • Alternatively, just click the Turn editing on button.

Using the Moodle activity chooser.

You can determine when your assignment is due, how late submissions are handled, what types of files will be accepted, how you will give feedback, and more.

Configure settings for your assignment:

  • General – Name and Description of assignment. Put any assignment instructions in the description field. You may also attach any resource files, templates, etc for your students here.
  • Availability – Set the dates you will allow the assignment to be open, the due date, and decide if you will allow late submissions by setting a Cut-off date. If a Cut-off date is enabled students will not be able to submit after the cut-off date has passed.
  • Submission types – specify what you want students to submit – default is file (Word or PDF document, Powerpoint, spreadsheet, or other digital file). You may also choose Online text to have students type directly into the Moodle assignment.
  • Feedback types – specify the ways in which you want to be able to give feedback – by default written feedback comments and the ability to upload feedback from a file will be enabled. You may also wish to enable the ability to Annotate a PDF of students’ submissions from within Moodle instead of downloading each file. For more information on using the PDF annotation feature to grade assignments, see Grade and Annotate Student Assignment Submissions .
  • Grade – set the grade value and the grade category for the assignment.
  • Turnitin – Plagiarism checking is integrated with the assignment type. See the Turnitin Knowledge Base entry for more information on how to enable Turnitin.

Click Save and return to Course.

The assignment should now be available in your course.

More information on Moodle Assignments

The assignment activity module enables a teacher to communicate tasks, collect work and provide grades and feedback.

Students can submit any digital content files, such as word-processed documents, spreadsheets, slides, images, etc. Alternatively, or in addition, the assignment may require students to type text directly into the text editor . An assignment can also be used to remind students of ‘real-world’ assignments they need to complete offline, such as art work or presentations, and thus not require any digital content. Students can submit work individually or as a member of a group.

Assignments can also be used to collect ungraded files or documents like contracts, agreement or consent forms, etc (just set the Grade Type to None in the Assignment settings).

When reviewing assignments, teachers can leave feedback comments and upload files, such as marked-up student submissions, documents with comments or spoken audio feedback. Assignments can be graded using a numerical or custom scale or an advanced grading method such as a rubric. Assignment grades are recorded in the gradebook.

Assignment Activity in Moodle

The Assignment Activity allows students to submit work for teachers to grade and give feedback on. Student submissions appear on one screen together and you can require that they submit one or several files. Assignments also can have deadlines and cut-off dates.

Creating an assignment activity

  • Select the “Edit Mode” toggle in the upper right to begin editing the course site.
  • Choose the Topics Block where you want to add the assignment and click Add an activity or resource .
  • Select the Assignment activity at the very top of the list.
  • Name the assignment and add a description as well as set the availability of the assignment, the submission types, and grade settings.
  • Click the [Save and return to course] button.

Grading Assignments

Various grading methods and grading feedback can be added to an assignment in both the Feedback types and Grade section of the Assignment settings.

Feedback types

  • Record RTC: allows for up to two minutes of recorded audio or video

Black circles around Record RTC and Kaltura buttons in ATTO editor in Moodle comments

  • Annotate PDF:  allows the grader to annotate a PDF by adding comments or drawings directly on the student’s submission. For information about annotating including using an iPad, see Annotating Moodle Assignment Files .
  • Feedback files:  grader is able to upload feedback files including marked-up student submissions (see Batch Export/Import of Assignment Submissions ), documents with comments, or other types of files.
  • Offline grading worksheet:  grader will be able to download and upload a worksheet with students’ grades while grading submissions.
  • Comment inline:  submission text is copied into the comments box allowing for inline comments or editing the original text.

Grading methods

  • Simple direct grading (default): grader enters a grade either a point or scale value based on the grade settings.
  • Grading Guide: grader uses a grading guide (similar to a rubric) to create a set of criteria for grading as well as point value for each criterion and comment (see Grading with Grading Guides in Moodle ).
  • Rubric:  grader creates a rubric consisting of a set of criteria with several descriptive levels for each criterion. A numerical grade is assigned to each level and the rubric score is used to calculate the student submission grade (see Grading with Rubrics in Moodle ).

Multiple Submissions

There may be situations when an instructor wishes to collect multiple document submissions within the same Moodle assignment such as a rough draft that is submitted for feedback prior to a final draft submission or collecting multiple documents as part of the same assignment over a period of time. See Allow Multiple Submissions to Moodle Assignment for step-by-step instructions.

Blank Submissions

If instructors are in the grading interface and notice an error message opening up a student’s submission or a student submission is blank, most often the issue is due to a setting a student enabled when downloading the assignment from their own device. Be sure to ask the student to uncheck or turn off the “editable pdf” setting and try downloading and reuploading the assignment again. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, please contact the Help Desk at [email protected] .

Conditional access to resources and activities

The Restricted Access setting is available for all resources and activities and allows instructors to make items available to students after they have met the restriction criteria. Restrictions can be based on the date, performance, completion of an activity, or both. For example, an instructor could post a quiz for students to complete and then post an extra credit activity to be released only after students have completed the initial quiz.

Show Activity Date

Instructors can now display the due date on activities on the course page by enabling “Show activity dates” in the course settings. For more information on enabling Show Activity date and how to set the activity date for an assignment see Show Activity Dates in Moodle .

An activity is a general name for a group of features in a Moodle course. Usually an activity is something that a student will do that interacts with other students and or the teacher.

In Moodle terminology, an Activity, such as Forums or Quizzes, properly means something students can contribute to directly, and is often contrasted to a Resource such as a File or Page, which is presented by the teacher to them. However, the term activity is sometimes for convenience also used to refer to both Activities and Resources as a group.

There are 15 different types of activities in the standard Moodle that can be found when the editing is turned on and the link 'Add an activity or resource' is clicked.

Additional plugins from the Moodle plugins directory may also be installed on your site.

The Moodle Assignment: Collect and grade submitted work

The Moodle Assignment module lets you collect student assignments—including research papers, spreadsheets, presentations, photographs, and short audio or video recordings—online. The video below is a great resource for seeing how to add an assignment and to understand many of the most useful options. A text version of the information, along with some specific recommendations for Haverford faculty follows the video.

Add the assignment

Configure the assignment.

Now you need to configure assignment settings. By selecting the correct options, you will be able to grade student and give feedback the way you want. You can generally accept the defaults, but we recommend changing a few of the options to make submission easy for students and grading easy for you.

General settings

You must fill in the general setting to give your assignment a name. You need to enter an Assignment name –the name that students see on the main course page.

You can also give an assignment Description to explain the assignment to your student. What are your expectations for the assignment? What file format, if any, should they use? If you are allowing drafts, what do you expect in the drafts and what do you expect in the final project?

You can also upload instructions, templates, or other relevant files in the Additional files area.

Availability

OPTIONAL: Next, you will see an Availability section. Use this to give your students due dates. Date information from your assignments will flow to the Moodle calendar. Students can see upcoming assignments  on their Moodle dashboard.

You can also set a “remind me to grade by” date; this will appear on your dashboard.

Submission types

OPTIONAL:  In the Submission types area, determine what your students will be submitting. If you leave the defaults, students will submit one file, up to 5 MB in size. This works for many types of assignments. However , if you have any of the scenarios below, you will want to change the defaults.

Do you want students to submit a short reading response, or other short entry, directly into the assignment text area? Check the “ online text ” box.

Do you want to set a word limit for online submissions? In addition to checking the “ online text ” box, enable and set a “ Word limit .”

Do you want student to submit draft copies of their submission? Increase the “ maximum number of uploaded files .”

Will students submit documents over 20MB in size? 20MB is a pretty large file. Hopefully, students will be uploading files much smaller, to avoid taxing our system resources. If 20MB is not large enough, contact [email protected] and see if there is a better tool for your needs.

moodle assignment activity

Do you want students to submit assignments in a particular format, such as a PDF, Microsoft Word format, Microsoft Excel, MP3 audio file, etc.? Click the “ Choose ” button and select your desired file type for student submissions or type the file extension name into the box. Require PDFs (“.pdf”) if you want to mark up assignments directly in the Moodle gradebook.

Feedback types

OPTIONAL:  In the Feedback types area, state what type of feedback you will give students–and how you will give that feedback. All options should be checked by default. However, if any options are unchecked that may prevent you from delivering feedback in your preferred way.

Check the “ Feedback comments ” box to give comments on each submission.

Check the “ Offline grading worksheet ” box, if you want to enter grades in Excel and upload them to Moodle.

Check the “ Feedback files ” box, if you want to return student submissions with your markups, or submit other types of feedback files such as voice comments.

Set “ Comment inline ” to yes , for an easy way to comment on text students submit directly into the assignment tool. This is only useful if you enable the “Online Text” submission type.

More options

In addition to the settings above, many other options are available. A few options:

  • group assignments
  • blind marking , to hide student identities when you grade
  • activity completion tracking, so you can make other activities in your course dependent upon this assignment, or just help students see where they are in the course

Once you have the desired settings, click the button to save and return to course .

Grade submissions and provide feedback

Once you have created your assignment activity and students have submitted work, you will want to collect and grade student submissions. You can either download all the assignments, grade them offline, and then upload feedback files with comments or mark papers directly in Moodle.

Download all submissions and mark papers outside of Moodle

The Moodle Assignment module lets you bulk downloaded student submissions for organization and offline grading. This can be helpful in a number of situations:

  • Organize and locally store submitted assignments
  • Provide assignments feedback using by marking-up student submissions using tools available in desktop or tablet apps such MS Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Explain Everything, etc.
  • Efficiently enter grades and general feedback comments using Excel, which can be faster the Moodle online grading interface
  • Grade assignments anywhere; internet access is not needed

It’s not hard to use the offline grading option, but it has a number of steps both within Moodle and your local computer operating system. Watch this video on off-line marking for more information.

Mark directly within Moodle

  • Enter the student’s grade.
  • Type or record feedback comments.
  • Download the submission to look at it or annotate it outside of Moodle.
  • Mark up a PDF submission.
  • Return a file with your annotations or comments.
  • Save the grade and continue to the next student.
  • Depending upon what the student submitted, you may want to change the layout of your marking window.
  • You can also select a different student from the upper right drop-down menu.
  • By default, students are notified when you grade, but you can uncheck that option before saving.

Related guidance

This page provides an overview of how to create a Moodle Assignment where students submit in groups. Before using group assignments, you will need to set up and apply groupings in addition to groups. This is because group submissions can disappear if groups are used and a student is in one group and is subsequently added to another group.

Read the Get started - Group assignment guidance before you start. This assignment type is more complex that other assignment activities.

Settings not enabled

  • Anonymous submissions are not enabled.
  • Turnitin is not enabled so no Similarity Report is produced.

If you are familiar with the assignment set up, you will only need to review:

  • Group assignment settings.

Screencast: Create a group assignment

This screencast demonstrates how to create a group assignment in Moodle 4.

  • Turn Edit Mode on.
  • Open the relevant section. Select Add an activity or resource . Select Assignment from the Activities tab.
  • In the General settings, write a meaningful Assignment name . This is the name that will be displayed on the module page and also in the gradebook.
  • In  Description , provide clear instructions to your students about the assignment. Consider adding a link to the student educational technology guidance.
  • Check Display Description on module page  to display the description beneath the assignment activity on the module page. If unchecked, the Description will only display when a student opens the assignment.
  • Do not use  Activity Instructions , as these will   only display to students  after  they have opened the assignment (usually at the point of submission). This setting should only be used for timed Moodle assignments.
  • If required, in Additional files , upload any files you would like to attach to this assignment (e.g. assignment cover sheet or example submissions). Download links for the files will be displayed on the assignment page under the Description.
  • Moodle guidance for students
  • In the Availability section, set the Allow submissions from date to indicate from when students will be able to submit their coursework. This is enabled by default.
  • Set the Due date to match the assignment deadline. This date displays on the module page it is added to the Moodle Calendar and the students' Timeline block.
  • Check the box next to Enable to set a Cut-off date . This is the final date and time when coursework can be submitted. Any submissions added after the Due date will be marked as late. Once the Cut-off date has passed, the submit button will not display on the assignment.
  • Disable or update the  Remind me to grade by date. This appears in Timeline and Upcoming events block for staff enrolled on a module to remind them of grading deadlines.
  • Do not use Time Limit . This feature is for setting timed assignments.
  • In Submission types , select the box to indicate if the submission will be online text or whether students will upload one or more files.
  • If Online text submissions are enabled, students type rich text directly into an editor field for their submission. Markers can comment on, and edit students' text directly. Tick the Enable box to set a word limit. Set the maximum number of words that each student will be allowed to submit.
  • Note: This is also the maximum number of feedback files that you can attach to each individual student when providing feedback. For example, if you want a student to submit one file but want to upload two feedback files then select three files.
  • The maximum submission size defaults to the maximum upload limit for Moodle of 400MB . This default can be decreased if required.  Please note: If you have Turnitin enabled on Moodle assignments that Turnitin's upload limit is 100MB .
  • The lecturer can specify the types of file the students may upload to the assignment. The file types may be added with their file extension, such as .png and mp3, or else as image/png and audio/mp3.
  • Accepted file types can be restricted by entering a semicolon-separated list of mimetypes, for example: 'video/mp4; audio/mp3; image/png; image/jpeg'. You may also limit to extensions by including the dot, for example '.png; .jpg'.
  • If the file types have been restricted, then when students attempt to submit the assignment, they will see a message telling them which files are accepted.
  • Leaving the field blank will allow all file types.

Feedback types controls how you can provide feedback. In most cases, you will not need to change these settings unless you have an online text submission. Set Comment inline to Yes for online text submissions.

moodle assignment activity

  • Set Require students to click the submit button to Yes if you want the option to Require all group members to submit from the Group assignment settings.
  • The setting Require that students accept the submission statement is enabled by default on assignments. Do not change this setting as it is important that students understand what is required of them in regards to academic integrity prior to submitting an assignment.

moodle assignment activity

  • When a student who is not in a group attempts to submit Moodle will display a message You're not a member of any group; please contact your lecturer . The student will not be able to submit the assignment.
  • If Yes is selected, then the assignment will not be classed as submitted until all members of the group have clicked the Submit assignment button.
  • This setting becomes selectable if you set  Require students to click the submit button  to  Yes  under the Submission settings.
  • Select a Grouping in the  Grouping for student groups  drop-down menu.

moodle assignment activity

  • The other grading methods are Rubrics and Marking records.
  • Anonymous submissions aren't possible with groups as the lecturer can see the membership of each groups.
  • Use  Marking workflow  is an  optional workflow  that requires grades to go through a series of stages before they're released to students.
  • This option might be required if course officers are uploading feedback received from lecturers.

Screenshot of Notification settings on a Moodle assignment.

  • If you want all Lecturers and Programme Administrators on a module to be notified via email of late submissions change Notify graders about late submissions to Yes .
  • The Default setting for Notify students is Yes . Do not change this setting as it controls the generation of an email to students on release of grades and feedback.
  • From the Common module settings , you can set Availability to Show or Hide on course page .
  • You do not need to change the Group mode .
  • Select Save and return to module .

You can use the Restrict access settings to control the availability of content and activities based on one or more conditions, including date and group.

Activity completion allows you to set completion criteria for a specific activity or resource.

Activities or resources with a completion criteria display a circle next to them in the Module index. The circle turns green (and is filled in) when the student meet the criteria. On the main module page, a tick and the word "done" appears against the item when the student meets the criteria. This helps students manage their progress on a module and staff can easily review student engagement and progress against key activities.

You can combine Restrict access   and Activity completion to provide structured pathways through your module.

Apply the settings

  • Open the activity or resource.
  • Select Settings from the contextual navigation menu above the module name. This opens the activity settings.
  • Change the settings required.
  • Select Save and return to module  to save any changes made.

Assign an activity to a grouping, use restrict access to assign an activity to groups.

Use Groups in Moodle, to assign a particular activity (or all course activities) to groups of students. Groups can be especially useful for activities where students interact with one another. With forums, wikis, and databases, students in the same group can post and reply only to each other. Each group member always works in their own group, but you can control whether or not they can see contributions of members of other groups.

Before you begin, please note that if you are using a Moodle Assignment activity there are two ways to use groups:

  • Each student in a group submits individually If you follow the instructions below for an assignment activity, each student will make their own submission(s), and will not be able to interact or see other student's postings. If you want students to be able to see each other's work, consider using a Forum , Wiki , or Database instead of an assignment.
  • A group of students works together to make a common assignment submission See Configure & Grade Group Assignments in Moodle if you want students in a group to make a common submission that represents their joint work. The group submission will not be visible to other groups. If you want students to be able to see each other's work, consider using a Forum , Wiki , or Database instead of an assignment.

Groupings are a collection of groups, and you can assign activities to specific groupings as needed.

  • To assign a specific activity to a grouping, you must first set up the grouping. For instructions on making a grouping, refer to Create Groupings in Moodle .
  • On your course page, click Turn editing on (top right).
  • Add the activity you will assign to groups (see About Adding Activities to a Moodle Course ), or if the activity has already been added to the course, click Edit (at right of activity), then Edit settings . The activity's Settings page will open.
  • Click Common module settings to view and adjust group settings for the activity.
  • Visible groups allows non-group members to see the work of other groups

Common Module settings

  • From the Grouping drop-down menu, select the name of the grouping you wish to use.

Annotation in parenthesis tells grouping name

Restrict access can be used in a variety of ways in Moodle to limit the access to your activities:

  • Restrict access can be used to assign an activity to a particular group without having to use a grouping. For example, you can create an activity for only one section of a multiple-section course, such as an honors or graduate section.
  • You can also use Restrict access to assign an activity to course members who are not in a particular group or grouping, or, by adding multiple restrictions, a mix of Groups or Groupings.

For a detailed explanation of group modes, see Group Modes in Moodle .

  • On your course page, click Turn editing on .
  • Configure the settings for the activity but do not set Common module settings as you normally would when assigning an activity to a grouping.
  • Under Restrict access, click Add restriction... . The Add restriction...  pop-up opens.

Group and Grouping buttons in the "Add restriction" pop-up

  • For Access restrictions , from the Student drop-down menu, select whether the student must or must not match the group.
  • From the Group (or Grouping) drop-down menu, select the name of a group (or grouping).
  • (Optional) To add an additional restriction, click Add restriction .
  • Click Save and display to save and open the assignment or click Save and return to course to return to your course page.

Note : When using Restrict access, be careful to check Common module settings for conflicts. For example, if you select a grouping in the Common module settings , and also use Restrict access to restrict the activity to a group that doesn't belong to that grouping, no one will be able to access the activity.

Coming soon! Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer integration

19 February 2024

Find out about our pilot of the Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer integration and plans for launch in March

We are currently piloting a Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer and plan to launch this to all Moodle users on March 18 th . You can read more about the pilot here: Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer pilot update .

This development will improve the process for transferring marks from Moodle to Portico. So far pilot feedback has been very positive: users say the assessment wizard works well and will save them a lot of time.

The first version of the integration that we launch in March will be a “Minimum Viable Product” and will support Moodle Assignments, Quizzes and Turnitin Assignments (not multipart) and the following criteria must be met:

1. You have used the Portico enrolment block to create a mapping with a Module Delivery on your Moodle course.

2. Either of the following assessment scenarios is true:

  • Only one Moodle assessment activity is being linked to one assessment component in SITS.
  • Only one Moodle assessment activity is being linked to multiple assessment components in SITS. assessment component exists in SITS to map against.

3. An assessment component exists in SITS to map against.

4. The Moodle assessment marks are numerical 0-100.

5. The assessment component in SITS is compatible with  SITS Marking Schemes  and  SITS Assessment Types .

6. For exam assessments, the SITS assessment component is the exam room code EXAMMDLE.

Following launch, we will continue to develop the integration to cover other assessment scenarios and functionality based upon user feedback and demand.

To support the rollout of this integration, we have established a group of Moodle Faculty Champions who will help with the cascade of information within each Faculty and we will provide “how to” guidance, FAQs and briefings once the integration is available.

Contact for further information: More information will be coming soon but for questions about the pilot in the meantime, please contact Kerry Vandersteen ( [email protected] ).

Four NJIT Highlanders are featured in NJBIZ ’s Power 100 list for 2024, including President Teik C. Lim.

The others are Luis De La Hoz, who serves on NJIT’s Hispanic Latinx Leadership Council, and two members of the Board of Directors of NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute: Debbie Hart and Michele Siekerka.

In its entry for Lim, the business publication cited the high rank that NJIT achieved from The Wall Street Journal /College Pulse last year: No. 19 in the U.S. — the second highest ranking for a public university.

De La Hoz is a first vice president and regional director of community lending at Valley Bank and chairman of the State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey. Hart is president and CEO of BioNJ and chair of the N.J. Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology, while Siekerka is president and CEO of the N.J. Business & Industry Association.

NJII , a corporation of the university, turns great ideas into businesses via four divisions, including those that arise from the research and inventions of professors and students. The divisions are entrepreneurship, health care, defense and professional and corporate education.

The HLLC seeks to grow the Hispanic and Latino population at NJIT. Currently, about a quarter of its undergraduate student body is Hispanic or Latino, up from 20% in 2021.

NJBIZ Chief Editor Jeffrey Kanige said the Power 100 list honors “people who have gained public attention — and perhaps acclaim — for their professional accomplishments and public service,” adding that “they have contributed meaningfully to the advancement of the public interest through their work and/or community service.”
