worksheet bible books

“Go Fish”

Kids may have to look at their Bibles’ Table of Contents for the correct order, but this game makes the learning fun.

How to Play

The goal is to collect four cards in correct Biblical order.

“Order, Order!”

This very active game gets the wiggles out while also teaching the books of the Bible.

Distribute two cards to every player. Players move around the room until your signal, when they quickly move to stand and display their cards in correct Biblical order.

“Concentration”

As kids search for matching pairs in this card game, they’ll be getting familiar with the books of the Bible.

Lay 12 to 16 identical cards from two sets facedown. Players take turns to flip two cards to find matching pairs; pairs are kept by each player. Count the pairs to determine the winner.

“War”

This two-part card game will have kids pronouncing the Bible book names correctly, as well as putting the books in order.

Players shuffle and divide a set of cards between them, and then simultaneously turn over the top cards from their piles, reading the book names aloud. The player whose card comes later in the Bible collects both cards.

Once all cards are played, players work together to correctly order all the cards.

Hidden word.

worksheet bible books

All the books of the Bible are on this activity page. While kids are simply coloring those in (and learning them!), they’ll also be discovering a secret message.

Old Testament Surprise

worksheet bible books

This “messy” page sure doesn’t look like a work of art. But as kids color in the names of the Old Testament books … well, they’re in for a surprise!

Computer Art

worksheet bible books

Kids will enjoy the challenge of staying on track to trace over the names of all the New Testament books. (We’ve done the first one to get them started.) But— Shhh! —they won’t know until they finish and step back that they’ve also drawn a picture!

Swimming Divisions

worksheet bible books

Your class can “dive in” and complete both parts of this activity at one time, or do the two parts in two different sessions. Either way, they’ll be getting a fun introduction to the divisions of the Old Testament.

Missing Halves

worksheet bible books

When kids match and then unscramble the letters on this page, they’ll have discovered the names of the divisions of the New Testament.

Books of the Bible chart

Sharing the books of the Bible in a chart is one easy way for kids to see and connect with what you’re teaching. For example, check out this colorful chart! The books are segmented by the Old and New Testament, they are color-coded by theme, and they are listed in order!

Tools like this show kids the big picture! (You can find this poster, and other fun teaching tools, in the Bible Tools Poster Pack, available here .)

More Books of the Bible Games

Bible ball toss.

worksheet bible books

Here’s an active and fun way to learn the Bible book names. There are several variations, so you can adapt the game to your particular group!

Bible Skill: Put the books of the Bible in the correct order

Materials: Bibles, ball

Preparation : Make copies of the contents pages from a Bible (1 per student).

How to Lead the Game

  • SAY: It’s easier to find places in the Bible when we know the order of the books. Let’s practice saying the books of the Bible in order.
  • Distribute copies of the Bible contents page for students to review.
  • Have kids stand in a circle. Toss a ball to a student and say, “Genesis.” The student who catches the ball says, “Exodus,” then tosses the ball to another student. Continue tossing the ball and saying the names of the books of the Bible in order until all the books have been named. Keep playing the game as time permits.

Game Variations

  • For younger kids, limit the number of books named, gradually adding more books as students are able to recall them.
  • For older students, form more than one circle, and have circles compete to see which circle of kids can say the books of the Bible in a specific division of the Bible, such as the Minor Prophets.

If some kids are unfamiliar with the books of the Bible, ask students to take turns reading aloud the names, referring to the Bible contents page. As students say the names, print the Bible book names in order on a large sheet of paper. Display the paper where all students can see it.

worksheet bible books

Use this guessing game to help kids learn the names and spellings of the books of the Bible. You can be creative and play according to categories, like books in a given Bible division, the most difficult book names, and so forth.

Bible Skill: Identify and Spell Books

Materials : Bibles, whiteboard and dry-erase marker (or large sheet of paper and marker)

  • Lead students to play a game similar to Hangman. On the board or a large sheet of paper, draw blank lines for each letter of a Bible book.
  • Students are to guess letters of the alphabet. Print correct letters on the appropriate blank lines. Print incorrect letters to the side of the blank lines, and print one letter of the word Bible. Kids try to guess and find the correct book in their Bibles before the word Bible is completed. The student who correctly guesses the word secretly chooses a different book of the Bible and draws lines for other kids to guess. Continue playing the game as time permits.

If playing this game with only a specific section of the Bible, introduce it by saying something like this: Today we’re going to play a game to find out more about the second group of books in the Old Testament part of the Bible. These books are called the books of History because they tell the history of how God brought Abraham’s descendants back to their homeland many years after Abraham died. These books also tell about how the people obeyed God and disobeyed Him.

Referring to the contents page in their Bibles, kids can take turns reading aloud the names of the books of History: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther. Students could also find each book in their Bibles.

Mixed-Up Books

worksheet bible books

This friendly competition is a way for two teams to learn the divisions of the books of the New Testament—and to get a clearer idea of God’s big-picture plan.

Bible Skill: Identify Bible divisions in the New Testament

Materials: Bibles, index cards, marker, masking tape

Preparation : Print the names of the books of the New Testament on index cards, one name per card. On separate cards, print the names of the main divisions of New Testament books (Gospels, History, Letters, Prophecy). Make at least two sets of cards or one set of book and main division cards for every ten students. Tear masking tape into 3” strips, making at least 56 strips of tape. Place strips on a table or chair where they can be easily removed by kids.

  • Mix up the book cards you prepared. One at a time, hold up the cards. Students are to tell which division each book is part of. SAY: All the stories in the Bible—from Adam and Eve to the very end—fit together to show us God’s great plan for the world and for our own lives. In the New Testament part of the Bible, we read about the coming of the Savior whom God promised to send. We also read about all the great things that happened after God kept His promise.
  • Divide the class into at least two teams of no more than ten students each. Teams are to line up in single-file lines at the opposite side of the classroom from where the masking-tape strips are. Place a set of mixed-up book cards face-down in a pile on the floor next to the first student on each team. Tape a set of main division cards on the wall across from each team, near the masking-tape strips. Leave room under each division card for book cards to be taped.
  • At your signal, the first student in each line takes a book card, runs to the division cards, grabs a piece of tape, and tapes the book card to the wall below the correct division card. Students then return to their teams and tag the next students in line. Play continues until all the cards are on the wall under the correct category.

If your students are not familiar with the New Testament divisions, go over them before playing the game.

Prophet Talk

worksheet bible books

This active and musical game focuses on a division of the Bible that sometimes doesn’t get much focus: the Old Testament books of Prophecy. Kids will enjoy learning the book names, as well as discussing why the Old Testament prophets were important.

Bible Skill: Identify Bible divisions: Old Testament Prophecy

Materials : Bibles, whiteboard, dry-erase marker and eraser (or large sheet of paper and marker), children’s music from your collection, music player

Preparation: Print on the board or on a sheet of paper the books of the Major and Minor Prophets in order.

Lead the Game

  • Have kids sit on the floor in a circle. Ask a volunteer to read from the board the books of the Bible. SAY: God sent many messengers, called prophets, to His people. These prophets spoke or wrote what God wanted His people to know. They gave many warnings to obey God and many promises about the Savior who was coming. We can read these messages in the books of Prophecy. The first five books of prophecy are called the Major Prophets, because these books are longer than the Minor Prophets. The Minor Prophets are the 12 smaller books that complete the Old Testament.
  • Tell kids to play a game of Hot Potato, passing the eraser or a marker while the music plays. When the music stops, say either “Major Prophets” or “Minor Prophets.” The student with the eraser erases a Bible book name from the division you named. If using paper and markers, the student crosses out the name.
  • Continue playing until all the books are erased or crossed out. Ask students to repeat together the names of the books of the Major and Minor Prophets.
  • If you have a student who is reluctant to play the game, ask that student to start and stop the music.
  • Sit in the circle with the students. Students enjoy getting to know their teachers while playing games together!

Walk and Talk

worksheet bible books

The movement and music in this activity will keep kids interested. What a fun way to learn the names and divisions of the New Testament books!

Bible Skill: Identify Bible Divisions: New Testament

Materials : Bibles, roll paper, tape, markers, children’s music from your collection, music player

Preparation: Cover a table with roll paper. Draw lines to divide the paper into sections, one section per student. Print the names of the divisions of the New Testament in separate sections, repeating divisions as needed (“Gospels,” “History,” “Letters,” “Prophecy”).

  • SAY: The New Testament tells how God’s promise to send a Savior came true and how God’s keeping of His promise brought salvation to all people!
  • While you play music, tell kids to hold their Bibles as they walk around the table. When you stop the music, each student should put a hand on one section on the paper. Then each kid should refer to the contents page in a Bible to find a book in the New Testament from that division. When students are ready, each can say the division and book name aloud. Repeat as time permits.
  • Turn the roll paper over and tape it to the table. Students should walk around the table while you play music. When you stop the music, call out a New Testament division. Each student should write the name of a book in that division. Play several rounds of the game.
  • Introduce the New Testament divisions by SAYING: The word gospel means “good news.” The four gospels tell the good news about Jesus. The History book, Acts, tells what God’s Holy Spirit did through people who told the good news about Jesus to the rest of the world. The next division of the New Testament is Letters . The Letters were written to encourage people to live as Christians. The last division is Prophecy . Revelation, the only New Testament book of prophecy, tells about the future time when Jesus will come back to earth.
  • You could give each student a copy of a Bible contents page to use in playing the game.

Who’s Got the Beans?

worksheet bible books

This lively competition to learn some of the Old Testament divisions and books breaks down into different rounds. The movement and music—along with trying to collect the most beans—will make your kids want to play several rounds!

Bible Skill: Identify Bible Divisions: Old Testament —Law, History, Poetry

Materials: Bibles, 10 beans per students (or other small objects for each student), children’s music from your collection, music player

  • Ask students to open their Bibles to the contents page. ASK: Which books are in the Law division of the Old Testament? (Genesis through Deuteronomy). Ask volunteers to read the names of the books of Law aloud. Identify the books of History and Poetry in the same way.
  • Give each student ten beans. Group students into two equal teams: A and B. (You can participate if you have an uneven number of kids.) As you play music, students should move randomly around the room. When you stop the music, each student should find a partner from the other team. Call out either A or B. Each student in the named group is to say the name of a book in one of the first three divisions of the Old Testament (Law, History, Poetry). The kids’ partners should respond by saying the name of the correct division, and then name another book in the division. (Optional: If students are unfamiliar with Bible book names, let them use the contents page in their Bibles to find book names.) If the division named is correct, the first student gives his or her partner a bean. If the division named is incorrect, the partner gives the first student a bean. Keep playing as time permits. The object of the game is to have the most beans at the end of the playing period.
  • Coins or uncooked pasta shapes can be used instead of beans.
  • Before playing, briefly review the first three divisions of the Old Testament. SAY: The books of Law tell about the beginning of the world and record God’s instructions to His people. The books of History tell how God led His people to a new land and give us stories about their leaders. The books of Poetry are stories, songs, sayings, and poems about how great and wonderful God is and how we can live in ways that please Him.

4 Free Printable Books of the Bible Charts: Instant Download

Have you been looking for different ways to remind yourself, your children, or your students about the chronological order of the books of the Bible? Searching for a free printable books of the Bible chart? These three different options for printable books of the Bible list are sure to be a great resource for Sunday School, personal quiet time, adult Bible studies, and more.

Why memorize the books of the Bible?

Why, in this digital age of reading the Word of God on your phone, tablet, or computer, should you take the time to memorize the order of the books of the Bible? It’s easier than ever to locate a single verse by searching, even when you only know a couple of words of a Bible verse.

There are some benefits to memorizing or being familiar with the order of the books of the Bible. The order of the books of the Bible is somewhat chronological, except when it is two authors about the same event. Even so, knowing where you are in history chronologically can give better understanding in studying the whole Bible.

Another reason is one of the most common reasons for knowing the books of the Bible. It can help you follow along in a Bible study or a sermon, to find a book of the Bible quickly. Each church and Bible study can be different in how much you use the printed Bible, or how often you need to search for a passage. Having an idea of where books are in the Bible is a great way to aid you in finding the books of the Bible faster.

Additionally, knowing the order of the books of the Bible compliments a comprehensive Christian education. Whether it is part of a homeschool curriculum, a Sunday School lesson, or a Christian school Bible class, knowing the order of the books of the Bible is a building block to further Christian education.

However, not memorizing the books of the Bible does not make you a “bad” Christian, nor does memorizing them make you a “good” Christian. Some people use a free books of the Bible list as a quick reference to quickly find where different books are in the Bible.

Other people who want to memorize the books of the Bible might find that a printed books of the Bible chart isn’t the best way for them to make progress in memorization. In that case, a books of the Bible song might be helpful.

Here is an example of one from Sing And Learn The Bible for the Old Testament books, and here is their version for the New Testament books. In past years, this is how many young Christians learned the order of the Bible books.

Books of the Bible Printable Pack

Remember back in the day when Sunday school and vacation Bible school teachers taught kids songs and rhymes to help them remember the order of the books of the Bible? Knowing the order came in pretty handy during the “sword” or Bible drill challenges when we raced to find the passage first.

Recently I was working with a 6th grader at our church to find a passage for the lesson, and I started singing the books as she flipped through. She giggled and thought I was strange.

Perhaps you’ve wondered the same thing she was feeling at that moment. Why would I need to memorize the order of the books of the Bible if there was always a list of them on the very first page of my Bible?

This might surprise you, but there’s more to memorizing the books of the Bible than earning the sword drill trophy during VBS.

Even though we can always flip back to that table of contents, nothing will help us understand how the Bible cohesively fits together like memorizing the books of the Bible! Knowing the order of the books gives us a general understanding of how the Bible connects with history , as well as God’s work throughout all time . This foundational knowledge will give your kids a place to start as they grow spiritually!

But can you actually have fun memorizing? Well, yes—let me show you how! We’ve created this free Books of the Bible Printable to help your kids enjoy memorizing the books of the Bible and make connections within God’s Word.

Books of the Bible List (plus Free Printable)

Printable Books of the Bible mock up

While we often think of the Bible as simply being a single book, it is actually a collection of many different books compiled into one. Each book in the Bible has a different story to tell.

And although the books themselves are in a certain order in the Bible, it isn’t in chronological order of how things actually happened in real-time.

Sometimes we can read single verses from different books in the Bible but not truly understand the context of the verse. Having a better understanding of how the books are classified can help make better sense of it all!

Below is a breakdown of all the books of the Bible and includes a really great Books of the Bible printable to help you keep track of it all during your study time.

What Are the Different Types of Books in the Bible

One really interesting thing to understand when studying the Bible is to understand the background of each book. Each book from the Old Testament and from the New Testament can be “organized” by content/purpose.

Old Testament Books of the Bible

The Old Testament books can be organized into 5 sections which include: Law, History, Poetry, Major Prophets, and Minor Prophets.

Books of the Bible – Law (Pentateuch)

These are the first 5 books in the Bible and were written by Moses. They are also called the books of Law or Pentateuch.

Books of the Old Testament – History

There are 12 books in the Old Testament that cover the history of the Israelites.

Books of the Old Testament – Poetry

There are five poetry books in the Bible. While the previous books covered Israelite history, these are considered a transition into books about the major and minor prophets.

Books of the Old Testament – Major Prophets

There are a total of 5 books of the Major Prophets in the Old Testament.

Books of the Old Testament – Minor Prophets

There are 12 books of the Minor Prophets in the Old Testament.

New Testament Books of the Bible

The New Testament books of the Bible are organized into 4 main sections: The Gospels, History, The Epistles, and the Prophecy.

Books of the New Testament – Gospels

The 4 Gospels are the stories of the life of Jesus while he was on Earth.

Books of the New Testament – History

The Book of Acts  covers the important period in Christian history between the resurrection of Jesus and the death of the apostle Paul, the time when Christian ideas and beliefs were being formulated, and when the organization of the church into a worldwide movement was being developed.

Books of the New Testament – Epistles

The Epistles refers to the books of the Bible that are mostly letters written by Paul and other apostles to churches or individuals.

Books of the New Testament – Prophecy

The Book of Revelation is the final book of Bible. It lays out the visions given to John about the end of times and what it will look like when Jesus returns to Earth.

Learning the books of the Bible is a very important thing for us to teach our children. It will help them throughout their lives so that they will be able to look up Bible verses as well as find information. However, this is no small feat. It takes hard work, time, and dedication, on the teacher’s as well as the student’s part, in order to learn all 66 books of the Bible. To help this process, I have created 5 crossword puzzles that will help the student review the books of the Bible that they have learned or will learn. Anyone will admit that the names of the books can be quite tricky. By using these crossword puzzles, they will help the children become familiar with the names of the books as well as how to spell them. There are answer sheets to make it easier on you, the teacher. You will notice that 1 & 2 Thessalonians is only listed as “Thessalonians”. This was simply due to the fact that spelling out First Thessalonians and Second Thessalonians just would have been too long and would not have fit into the puzzle. I hope that these will be fun for your students as well as educational and informative. 66 books of the Bible list (plus free printables pdf)

The 66 books of the Bible list can be misleading if you don’t know much about Bible history.

The Bible has different ‘books’ because each book really is a separate document all on its own, written at various points in time throughout history.

Although we now have the Bible between two covers, it did not start out that. One person did not sit down and write all these books.

This is why Bible study is so very vast and interesting. In this post, we will explore the 66 books of the Bible, how they are organized, their authors and meaning.

How many books are in the Old and New Testament

There 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament.

Despite the way they have been organized, the stories are not all chronologically placed.

That’s why there are such things as the chronological Bible reading plan .

What are the 66 books of the Bible in order

The order books of the Bible does not mean that the stories are all in order. Remember that the books are all separate, written by different people at different points in historical time

This list is only how they are currently organized in the Bible you buy or come across.

Old Testament books of the Bible

  • Deuteronomy
  • 1 Chronicles
  • 2 Chronicles
  • Ecclesiastes
  • Song of Solomon
  • Lamentations

How do you organize the books of the Bible

The Old Testament is basically the entire Jewish bible. It is called the Tanahk which is actually an acronym for the divisions of the Hebrew Scripture.

Tanahk means Torah (Instruction, or Law, also called the Pentateuch), Neviʾim (Prophets), and  Ketuvim (Writings).

The a’s were added to make it pronounceable.

TNK can be used to remember how the books of the Old Testament are organized by their genres.

Old Testament – Books of Law (known as the Pentateuch)

Old testament books – history, old testament books – poetry or wisdom literature.

  • Song Of Solomon

How do you remember the 66 books of the Bible?

I confess. I don’t always remember where to find some of the Books of the Bible.

When I used to use a physical Bible more often, this was never the case.

Now, my iPad and phone are taking away this aspect of my Bible knowledge.

But there is nothing like a song to help us remember anything.

If you want to commit the order of these books to memory, you can use the 66 books of the Bible song .

And you can use the 66 books of the bible coloring pages pdf too.

Caddabra, you have an interesting name. I see this 66 sheet Bible reference as a useful index for personal study. I would like to have a set, printed and in a looseleaf binder which would provide quick reference to help with thoughts about the various subject matter. I think it would be of great help in my personal Bible study.

The presentation of the Biblical Truths, is awesome! In a few minutes, one could grasp the Biblical Wisdom! It streamlined my Biblical awareness with accuracy and consistency. Basically, I’m an Indian Preacher, ministering the Word of God amidst Indian rural folks, who are mostly illiterate. I’ll be grateful if you can provide spiritual guidelines which are simple and easy to preach to the forsaken and backward Indian brethren.

July 24, 2022 at 7:44 pm

Hello Prasannakumar. Such a blessing to receive your feedback. I am happy you were blessed. My one guideline for you is this: use the stories of the Bible to tell them about Jesus. I find that everyone, regardless of literacy level can connect with a story. And the wonderful thing about the Word of God is that you once you teach the simple truth about Jesus, the Holy Spirit will take it from there and do the rest of the work. I am praying for your success in ministry among the people God has sent you to serve. Blessings!

Encouragement for Today

“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” Psalm 34:7 (NIV)

A few years ago, one of my back teeth started hurting. It wasn’t the first time that tooth had given me trouble, but quite honestly, I just didn’t want to deal with it.

I’d had not one, not two, but three crowns done on that same tooth. The first one broke. The second one broke. And though the third one seemed like it would finally work, the tooth started aching again. Ugh!

The dentist informed me the only thing to do was to have a root canal.

But fear overcame my heart, and I just couldn’t bring myself to schedule it.

So I dealt with the throbbing pain … for a full year. I didn’t chew on that side of my mouth. I didn’t let cold drinks leak over to that side. And I took ibuprofen when the throbbing got the best of me.

Finally I’d had enough. The pain overrode the fear, and I made the dreaded appointment.

And you know what? I survived! Actually, the fear of the root canal was so much worse than having the procedure done.

I think fear often plays out that way. Sometimes living in fear of what might be causes more stress and anxiety than actually facing what we fear.

Maybe you can relate. Is there something you’re avoiding because you’re afraid?

Psalm 34:7 reminds us, “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them” (NIV). To fear the Lord means to honor Him and magnify Him in our hearts more than anyone or anything else. But when I focus on or magnify my lesser, anxious fears, they become all I can think about.

Instead, here are three things we can do to focus on God today:

  • Cry out to Him with honest prayers. Verbalize to God what you’re afraid of and how paralyzing the fear is. Ask Him to help you discern if there is any truth to this fear.
  • Open your Bible, and look for verses that show you what He wants you to do in that moment of fear. Write down truths, and then align your next thoughts and actions with His Word.
  • Move forward. We may not always live fear-free, but we can choose not to let fears about tomorrow steal our joy for today.

Is there an everyday fear holding you back? Is it a fear of confronting an issue with a friend? Is it a fear of stepping out in obedience to God? Is there fear surrounding a medical diagnosis you just received?

Oh friend, if I were with you right now, I would totally hold your hand. But better yet, God is with you. And when you know He is with you and His angels are encamped around you, you can face your fears.

Dear Lord, as fears threaten to overcome me, I pray Your comfort would embrace me. Help me bring my fears into the light and fix my thoughts on the truths in Your Word. Instead of getting worked up over what I’m afraid of, I want to allow the Holy Spirit to work in me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Inside Aleksei Navalny’s Final Months, in His Own Words

Trump. Indian food. Matthew Perry. And books, books, books. Excerpts from letters obtained by The Times show Mr. Navalny’s active mind, even amid brutal prison conditions.

  • Share full article

Bouquets of flowers surround a portrait of Aleksei A. Navalny at a memorial in Germany.

By Anton Troianovski

Reporting from Berlin

Confined to cold, concrete cells and often alone with his books, Aleksei A. Navalny sought solace in letters. To one acquaintance, he wrote in July that no one could understand Russian prison life “without having been here,” adding in his deadpan humor: “But there’s no need to be here.”

“If they’re told to feed you caviar tomorrow, they’ll feed you caviar,” Mr. Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, wrote to the same acquaintance, Ilia Krasilshchik, in August. “If they’re told to strangle you in your cell, they’ll strangle you.”

Many details about his last months — as well as the circumstances of his death, which the Russian authorities announced on Friday — remain unknown; even the whereabouts of his body are unclear.

Mr. Navalny’s aides have said little as they process the loss. But his final months of life are detailed in previous statements from him and his aides, his appearances in court, interviews with people close to him and excerpts from private letters that several friends, including Mr. Krasilshchik, shared with The New York Times.

The letters reveal the depth of the ambition, resolve and curiosity of a leader who galvanized the opposition to President Vladimir V. Putin and who, supporters hope, will live on as a unifying symbol of their resistance. They also show how Mr. Navalny — with a healthy ego and incessant confidence that what he was doing was right — struggled to stay connected to the outside world.

Even as brutal prison conditions took their toll on his body — he was often denied medical and dental treatment — there was no hint that Mr. Navalny had lost his clarity of mind, his writings show.

He boasted of reading 44 books in English in a year and was methodically preparing for the future: refining his agenda, studying political memoirs, arguing with journalists, dispensing career advice to friends and opining on viral social media posts that his team sent him.

In his public messages, Mr. Navalny, who was 47 when he died, called his jailing since January 2021 his “space voyage.” By last fall, he was more alone than ever, forced to spend much of his time in solitary confinement and left without three of his lawyers, who were arrested for participation in an “extremist group.”

Still, he kept up with current events. To a friend, the Russian photographer Evgeny Feldman, Mr. Navalny confided that the electoral agenda of former U.S. President Donald J. Trump looked “really scary.”

“Trump will become president” should President Biden’s health suffer, Mr. Navalny wrote from his high-security prison cell. “Doesn’t this obvious thing concern the Democrats?”

A Public Life

Mr. Navalny was able to send hundreds of handwritten letters, thanks to the curious digitalization of the Russian prison system, a relic of a brief burst of liberal reform in the middle of Mr. Putin’s 24-year rule. Through a website , people could write to him for 40 cents a page and receive scans of his responses, typically a week or two after he sent them, and after they passed through a censor.

Mr. Navalny also communicated with the outside world through his lawyers, who held up documents against the window separating them after they were barred from passing papers. At one point, Mr. Navalny reported in 2022, prison officials covered the window in foil.

Then there were his frequent court hearings on new criminal cases brought by the state to extend his imprisonment, or on complaints that Mr. Navalny filed about his treatment. Mr. Navalny told Mr. Krasilshchik, a media entrepreneur now in exile in Berlin, that he enjoyed those hearings, despite the rubber-stamp nature of Russia’s judicial system.

“They distract you and help the time pass faster,” he wrote. “In addition, they provide excitement and a sense of struggle and pursuit.”

The court appearances also provided him an opportunity to show his contempt for the system. This past July, at the conclusion of a trial that resulted in another 19-year sentence, Mr. Navalny told the judge and officers in the courtroom they were “crazy.”

“You have one, God-given life, and this is what you choose to spend it on?” he said, according to text of the speech published by his team.

In one of his last hearings, by video link in January, Mr. Navalny argued for the right to longer meal breaks to consume the “two mugs of boiling water and two pieces of disgusting bread” to which he was entitled.

The appeal was rejected; indeed, throughout his imprisonment, Mr. Navalny seemed to savor food vicariously through others, according to interviews. He told Mr. Krasilshchik that he preferred doner kebabs to falafel in Berlin and took an interest in the Indian food that Mr. Feldman tried in New York.

The court also dismissed his complaint about his prison’s solitary “punishment” cells, in which Mr. Navalny spent some 300 days .

The cells were usually cold, damp and poorly ventilated 7-feet-by-10-feet concrete spaces. But Mr. Navalny was protesting something different: Inmates ordered to spend time in those cells were allowed only one book.

“I want to have 10 books in my cell,” he told the court.

Books Sustained Him

Books appeared to be at the center of Mr. Navalny’s prison life, all the way until his death.

In a letter last April to Mr. Krasilshchik, Mr. Navalny explained that he preferred to be reading 10 books simultaneously and “switch between them.” He said he came to love memoirs: “For some reason I always despised them. But they’re actually amazing.”

He was frequently soliciting reading recommendations, but also dispensed them. Describing prison life to Mr. Krasilshchik in a July letter, he recommended nine books on the subject, including a 1,012-page, three-volume set by the Soviet dissident Anatoly Marchenko.

Mr. Navalny added in that letter that he had reread “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich,” the searing Alexander Solzhenitsyn novel about Stalin’s gulag. Having survived a hunger strike and gone months “in the state of ‘I want to eat,’” Mr. Navalny said he only now started to grasp the depravity of the Soviet-era labor camps.

“You start to realize the degree of horror,” he wrote.

Around the same time, Mr. Navalny was also reading about modern Russia. Mikhail Fishman, a liberal Russian journalist and television host now working in exile from Amsterdam, heard from a Navalny aide that the opposition leader had read his new book about the assassinated opposition figure Boris Y. Nemtsov.

Mr. Fishman said he was told that Mr. Navalny liked the book, but that he viewed it as too favorable to Boris N. Yeltsin, the former Russian president.

Mr. Fishman wrote to Mr. Navalny to push back, arguing, among other things, that Mr. Yeltsin hated the K.G.B., the feared Soviet secret police that quashed dissent. Mr. Navalny responded that he was “particularly outraged” by that claim.

“Prison, investigation and trial are the same now as in the books” of Soviet dissidents, Mr. Navalny wrote, insisting that Mr. Putin’s predecessor had failed to change the Soviet system. “This is what I cannot forgive Yeltsin for.”

But Mr. Navalny also thanked Mr. Fishman for offering some details about his life in Amsterdam.

“Everyone usually thinks that I really need pathetic and heartbreaking words,” he wrote in an excerpt that Mr. Fishman shared with The Times. “But I really miss the daily grind — news about life, food, salaries, gossip.”

Kerry Kennedy, a human-rights activist and the daughter of the Democratic politician Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968, also exchanged letters with Mr. Navalny. He told her that he had cried “two or three times” while reading a book about her father recommended by a friend, according to a copy of a letter , handwritten in English, that Ms. Kennedy posted on Instagram after Mr. Navalny died.

Mr. Navalny thanked Ms. Kennedy for sending him a poster with a quote from her father’s speech about how a “ripple of hope,” multiplied a million times, “can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

“I hope one day I’ll be able to hang it on the wall of my office,” Mr. Navalny wrote.

Staying Connected

The friend who recommended the Kennedy book was Mr. Feldman, the Russian photographer who covered Mr. Navalny’s attempt to run for president in 2018. Mr. Feldman, now in exile in Latvia, said he sent at least 37 letters to Mr. Navalny since his 2021 arrest and received replies to almost all of them.

“I really like your letters,” Mr. Navalny wrote in the last message that Mr. Feldman received, dated Dec. 3, excerpts from which he shared with The Times. “They’ve got everything I like to discuss: food, politics, elections, scandalous topics and ethnicity issues.”

The latter, Mr. Feldman said, was a reference to their exchanges on antisemitism and the Gaza war. Mr. Navalny also described his newfound appreciation for the actor Matthew Perry, who died in October; though he had never watched “Friends,” Mr. Navalny was moved by an obituary he read in The Economist.

The December letter ended with Mr. Navalny’s thoughts on a preoccupation he shared with Mr. Feldman — American politics. After warning of a potential Trump presidency, Mr. Navalny concluded with a query: “Please name one current politician you admire.”

Three days after Mr. Navalny sent that letter, he disappeared .

During a frantic, 20-day search, Mr. Navalny’s exiled allies said they sent more than 600 requests to prisons and other government agencies.

On Dec. 25, Mr. Navalny’s spokeswoman declared he had been found in a remote Arctic prison known as Polar Wolf.

“I’m your new Santa Claus,” Mr. Navalny posted on social media the next day, after his lawyer visited him. “I don’t say ‘Ho-ho-ho,’ but I say ‘Oh-oh-oh’ when I look out the window, where there is night, then evening and then night again.”

In the Arctic

Mr. Navalny said in the post that he was taken on a circuitous route through the Ural Mountains to his new prison, which was classified as a harsher “special regime” facility.

Even on that journey, Mr. Navalny was reading books. He wrote to the journalist Sergei Parkhomenko that by the time he arrived at Polar Wolf he had read all that he was able to bring with him, and was forced to choose from the classics in his new prison library: Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky or Chekhov.

“Who could’ve told me that Chekhov is the most depressing Russian writer?” Mr. Navalny wrote in a letter that Mr. Parkhomenko shared on Facebook.

Mr. Parkhomenko said he received the letter on Feb. 13. Unlike Mr. Navalny’s previous letters, it was handwritten on simple, squared notebook paper and forwarded to him as a photograph by Yulia Navalnaya, Mr. Navalny’s wife. Polar Wolf didn’t allow the electronic letter-writing service offered by his previous prison.

It had become clear that the Kremlin was intent on silencing Mr. Navalny. The lawyers who had represented him for most of his time behind bars were in jail, while letters and visitors would take longer to reach him in his new prison.

Mr. Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, flew to the Arctic after the announcement of his death and, on Saturday, received an official notice that he had died at 2:17 p.m. the prior day.

Mr. Navalny’s legacy will live on, friends and allies say, in part through his writings in prison. Mr. Feldman, the photographer, said that Mr. Navalny’s legal team told him that the opposition leader had responded to at least some of the letters Mr. Feldman sent in recent weeks.

“Honestly, I think about this with horror,” Mr. Feldman said. “If the censors let them through, I’ll be getting letters from him for the next several months.”

Mr. Krasilshchik, the media entrepreneur, said he was left to ruminate on the last letter he received, in September. Mr. Navalny concluded it by positing that if South Korea and Taiwan were able to make the transition from dictatorship to democracy, then perhaps Russia could, too.

“Hope. I’ve got no problem with it,” Mr. Navalny wrote.

He signed off: “Keep writing! A.”

Neil MacFarquhar, Oleg Matsnev and Milana Mazaeva contributed reporting.

“There is nothing in these principles that talks about honoring greats in black American history. There is nothing in here that is actual scholarship. It doesn’t speak to education. It speaks to ideology."

I genuinely cannot believe that something like this is not only being passed out to kids but is part of their curriculum in elementary school. If I were a parent of a child who attended that New York school, I’d be pulling him out and homeschooling him ASAP!

All 10 Biblical People In The Book Of Clarence

  • The Book of Clarence provides a stylized twist on Jesus' crucifixion, featuring real Biblical figures and a pro-faith message.
  • Characters like Mary Magdalene and Pontius Pilate play significant roles, reflecting their biblical counterparts.
  • The film humorously explores the relationships between these figures, including the comedic encounter between Clarence and Mary, and the villainous role of Judas.

The Book of Clarence provides an entertaining and highly stylized alternative to the typical story of Jesus and his crucifixion, but there are still many real Biblical figures who help drive the film's narrative. The Book of Clarence ending directly mirrors the end of Jesus' life as depicted in the Bible, and in fact features Jesus himself. Buoyed by an excellent soundtrack from Jeymes Samuel , The Book of Clarence manages to balance modern humor and social justice concepts with an ultimately pro-faith message.

Throughout The Book of Clarence 's runtime, there are plenty of mentions of famous names that hearken back to some of the Bible's most famous stories. Characters named Jezebel, Samson, Goliath, or Elijah, for example, are not actually intended to be depicting their famous Biblical counterparts, they are there more as Easter eggs than anything. However, the story of The Book of Clarence is directly adjacent to the life and times of Jesus Christ leading up to his crucifixion, and therefore there are a number of real Biblical figures that play significant roles in the movie.

Jesus Christ

Played by nicholas pinnock.

The Book of Clarence centers around a down-on-his-luck man desperate to improve his lifestyle and position in the society in which he lives. His original plan is to become the 13th Apostle to Jesus Christ, but he soon pivots to pretending to be a Messiah himself. Nicholas Pinnock plays Jesus with the proper balance of gravitas and grace that should define one of the most famous people in the history of humanity, and the centerpiece of the Christian faith in the world .

In The Book of Clarence , Benedict Cumberbatch plays a homeless character named Benjamin who appears to be the traditional (and racially inaccurate) white version of Jesus once he is cleaned and clothed.

Mother Mary

Played by alfre woodard.

In the course of trying to prop himself up as the Messiah, Clarence theorizes that he can glean information about how Jesus performs his "miracles" from someone who has known him intimately for his entire life, Jesus' mother Mary. Clarence's visit to Mary's house is one of the funnier scenes in the movie, as he subtly implies that the Immaculate Conception may not be quite as miraculous as Mary would have everyone believe, earning him a smack from the Virgin Mother. Alfre Woodard deftly balances the significance of her character with the inherent comedy of the conversation.

Played by Brian Bovell

In the Bible, Joseph carries significance as the man who raised Jesus, but his importance is far below that of his son and wife in the Christian faith. He is often seen as underappreciated, and The Book of Clarence treats him almost as a joke in that regard. He is tangentially involved in Clarence's conversation with Mother Mary, but as the butt of Clarence's implied jokes about the actual virgin status of the so-called Virgin Mother.

Mary Magdalene

Played by teyana taylor.

While recent works like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code have popularized the idea that Mary Magdalene had a special relationship with Jesus of Nazareth, and may have even been his wife, there is little evidence in the Bible to suggest that she was anything more than a devoted female follower, no different from the other Apostles in Jesus' eyes. The Book of Clarence opens with a chariot street race, and it is in fact Mary Magdalene who Clarence races. While she plays a role similar to her Biblical counterpart later in the movie, her badass introduction helps set the tone for the movie from the jump.

Pontius Pilate

Played by james mcavoy.

Pontius Pilate was a Roman governor of the Judaea region of antiquity in which Jerusalem could be found, and he is famous for being the man who oversaw the trial that ended with Jesus' crucifixion. Pilate has that same role in The Book of Clarence , but it is Clarence who he condemns to death in the movie. He is seen as somewhat amiable in the movie, which reflects his Biblical reluctance to actually sentence Jesus to death despite the wishes of the priests and public under his rule.

Pontius Pilate is actually recognized as a saint and martyr by some modern Christian churches.

Played by Omar Sy

In the Bible, Barabbas is an infamous prisoner under Pontius Pilate, who, thanks to a Passover tradition, is linked to Jesus. According to tradition, at Passover, the area prefect (Pontius Pilate) could commute the death sentence of one prisoner based essentially on a popular vote. Pilate gave the mob a choice between saving Barabbas or Jesus, and the crowd chose Barabbas. Per the Gospels, Barabbas was a murderer who had killed someone during an insurrection against Rome, and his animosity towards Roman rule is captured in The Book of Clarence .

Judas Iscariot

Played by micheal ward.

Judas Iscariot is one of the most famous figures in the Bible, as he is the disciple responsible for betraying Jesus to those who wished to persecute him. His name has since become synonymous with treachery. In The Book of Clarence, Judas acts as one of the most vocal Apostles who deals with Clarence, and is the one who proposes that Clarence free slaves from Asher the Torturer to earn his place as an Apostle. This is, of course, a fool's errand, and between that and Judas later being paid to identify Messiahs, he maintains his villainous streak from the Bible.

John the Baptist

Played by david oyelowo.

David Oyelowo plays John the Baptist in The Book of Clarence, who is one of the most revered figures in Christianity . He is responsible for baptizing Jesus, and is largely responsible for the significance of baptism within the Christian faith. In The Book of Clarence , Clarence tries to get John the Baptist to baptize him as an early step in his plot to become the 13th Apostle. In one of the movie's funniest interactions, John slaps Clarence for being a hypocrite before delivering a decidedly aggressive "baptism", angrily holding his head under the water for an extended period of time.

Peter "The Rock" The Apostle

Played by jacobi howard.

In the Bible, Peter is one of the chief disciples of Jesus Christ , and is regarded as the founder of the Christian Church. He is recognized as the first bishop of Rome (essentially the Pope) and the first bishop of Antioch, or "the rock" on which Jesus built his church. In The Book of Clarence , Peter is little more than a background character, which could be interpreted as a commentary on the importance (or lack thereof) of the organized Christian Church.

"Doubting" Thomas the Apostle

Played by lakeith stanfield.

In The Book of Clarence , the fictional character Clarence is depicted as the twin brother of the real Apostle, Thomas. The term "doubting Thomas" is a reference to an instance from the Bible in which Thomas refused to believe in Jesus' resurrection until he could see and touch Jesus' crucifixion wounds. Thomas is just as dismissive of his ne'er-do-well brother as the rest of the Apostles, although he and Clarence do make up to some degree before Clarence is crucified at the end of the movie.

Cu intercalation and defect engineering realize atomic-scale hydrogen spillover effect in nbs2 to boost acidic hydrogen evolution.

Promoting the intrinsic catalytic activity of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is very beneficial to developing the Pt-free single-component electrocatalysts. Here we report a single-component TMD-based electrocatalyst Cu0.4NbS2-δ with chemical intercalation and sulfur vacancies. Cu0.4NbS2-δ was synthesized conveniently by solid-phase reaction and it shows hexagonal lattice with intercalated Cu atoms in four-coordinated tetrahedral configuration. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that the intercalation and S vacancies redistributed the electronic structure of the pristine NbS2, leading to multi-functional catalytic sites including the defect hollow sites in basal plane and different Cu sites in between the layers. Therefore, hydrogen spillover pathways can be proceed in atomic-level in Cu0.4NbS2-δ from proton adsorption at defect hollow sites, through interlayer sites for readily hydrogen migration, and finally to Cu sites for fast H2 desorption. Based on this atomic-scale hydrogen spillover effect, the polycrystalline Cu0.4NbS2-δ exhibits a low overpotential of 153 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and great durability after 3000 cycles. Our work provides an effective strategy to build the hydrogen spillover in TMDs, which is instructive for exploring the economical single-component electrocatalyst with high intrinsic activity.
