Days of the Week Activities, Games, Worksheets and Lesson Plans

Day of the week is a common unit found in many beginner ESL textbooks. If you’re looking for some fresh, new ideas to keep things interesting, then you’re in the right place. You can find lots of days of the week games and activities, along with lesson plans, worksheets, online practice and more.

Days of the Week ESL Activities and Games

Let’s get into the best ESL games and activities to teach students about days and weekly schedules.

#1: Telephone ESL Speaking and Listening Game

I’ve sure you’ve played telephone when you were a kid. The way it works is that students pass a sentence secretly from person to person down the line. Then, at the end, the last student compares what they heard with the original one. The results are usually hilarious.

In this case, use something like the following for your starter sentences:

  • On Monday, I usually play soccer but on Friday I go swimming.
  • On Sundays, I like to make a big breakfast, go hiking and then come home and relax.

#2: Word Challenge Spelling Game

If you’re teaching the days of the week to absolute beginners, try out this fun spelling activity. Divide the class into two teams and then have one member from each team come up to the whiteboard. Say a day (Thursday) and the first student to spell it correctly gets a point for their team.

Of course, you can use this activity for any sort of vocabulary set. Check it out here: ESL Spelling Challenge .

#3: Dictogloss Days of the Week Activity

This is an ESL activity that’s heavy on the listening and can be adapted to just about any kind of topic or vocabulary. In this case, you’ll want to find a reading passage that has a lot of the days of the week in it. Perhaps someone talking about their weekly schedule (or write it yourself).

Then, put students into pairs and have them take notes as you read out the passage more quickly than you normally would. Then, they work together to try to recreate what they heard. After that, read it again at a fast pace and students do the same. Finally, they compare their version with the original. Learn more about it here:

ESL Dictogloss Activity .

It’s certainly one of my favourite days of the week ESL activities so be sure to give it a try.

#4: Day of the Week Songs and Chants

One of the best ways for kids to learn new vocabulary is with songs and chants. If you’re not musical, not to worry! There are plenty of games and activities to consider using in your classes. Have a look on YouTube and you’re sure to find something that’ll work in just a minute or two.

#5: ESL Survey

A nice way to get students talking about their weekly schedules is to use a survey. Just ask my students and they’ll tell you how much I love this activity! It’s ideal because it covers a range of skills and also gets students up and out of their seats, moving around the classroom and talking to their classmates.

In this case, some of the yes/no questions to include on your survey might be the following:

  • Do you like to sleep in on weekends?
  • Are you an early riser?
  • Do you eat something special for breakfast on Saturday or Sunday?
  • Do you ever stay up too late on a weeknight?

Do you want to try out this kind of activity with your English learners? Find out everything you need to know right here:

Surveys for English Learners.

#6: Dictation Practice

I know that dictation has fallen out of favour a little bit these days with an emphasis on the communicative approach. But, when students are learning new words or grammatical constructions, it can certainly have some value.

For beginners, you may want to simply say the word (Tuesday) and have students write it in their notebooks as a way to practice spelling.

More advanced learners can dictate an entire sentence (On Monday and Tuesday, I have to get up early to go to school).

#7: Me Too!

A nice way to get students speaking and listening is to play Me Too! The way it works is that each student says a sentence about their weekly schedule. The key is to say something that they think some people will agree with, but not everyone. For example:

  • I usually play soccer after school on Fridays.
  • On Sunday, my Dad makes pancakes or French toast.

Then, if someone else has the same thing, they say, “Me Too!” Find out all the details here:

#8: Word Association Days of the Week Activity

A nice warmer activity is Word Association. In this case, you may want divide it up into two sections: weekdays and weekends. Then, students can contribute some words that come to mind when you think of those days. Check it out here:

Word Association ESL Warmer.

#9: Find Someone Who

This is an ESL icebreaker kind of Bingo activity, but it can be very easily adapted to weekly schedules. Fill up the board with statements like the following.

Find Someone Who…

  • likes to sleep in on Saturday
  • stays up late on Friday night
  • cooks for the week on Sunday night
  • doesn’t get enough sleep on weekdays
  • has no free time from Monday to Friday

Learn more about this ESL activity here: Find Someone Who Bingo .

#10: Day of the Week ESL Speaking Lesson

It’s super easy to plan an ESL speaking lesson about almost anything, including days of the week. Check out this video for the simple steps that you can follow:

#11: Running Dictation

This is one of my favourite 4-skills ESL games that the students love to do. Plus, it’s possible to use it for any sort of topic, including daily or weekly schedules.

You’ll need to find (or write) a conversation between two people talking about what they do on various days of the week. Then, students have to work together to dictate the conversation and then put it into the correct order. Try it out here:

ESL Running Dictation Game.

This is one of the best days of the week ESL games so be sure to give it a try with your students.

#12: Concentration Memory Game

This is a fun memory game that can help your students remember new vocab. In this case, you’ll want to make cards with clues and then a day. For example:

Monday = the day after Sunday

Wednesday = the day before Thursday

Sunday = the most common day people go to Church

Then, students put the cards face down and play a matching game in small groups. Learn how to do it here:

ESL Concentration Activity .

#13: Chain Spelling Activity

This is a simple way to review how to spell words in English. The students stand up and you say a word (Wednesday). Students have to spell it out, letter by letter. If someone misses a letter, they sit down and are out of the game. The last person left standing is the winner.

#14: Conversation Starters and Free Talking

If you tell your students to talk about their weekly schedules with a partner, you may be met with blank silence. So if you want to do free-talking, a better option is to encourage free conversation, but also give students some conversation starters they can fall back on if they get stuck. For example:

  • What do your weekends look like?
  • Do you live for the weekend?
  • What time do you usually get up?
  • What’s your morning routine like?

Tips for Teaching ESL/EFL to Teenagers, University Students & Adults: A Practical Guide for English...

  • 122 Pages - 02/23/2020 (Publication Date)

#15: 3 Things Writing Activity

This is a super simple, no-prep writing activity. The way it works is that a student thinks of three things and another student has to make a story (true or fictitious) using those three words. In this case, I’d restrict it to days and schedule kinds of words.

See all the details here:

#16: Dialogue Substitution

It’s often the case that new vocabulary is introduced in ESL textbooks through a dialogue of some kind. However, maybe your students are like mine and if you ask them to read it, they just blow through it super quickly and don’t really pay attention to what they’re reading. Of course, it’s not their fault! It’s just that they have no real reason to read closely.

The better way is to remove some key words (days or activities) which turn it from a straight-up reading activity to one that’s focused on meaning as well. Try it out for yourself and I’m sure you’ll notice a big difference.

#17: Days of the Week Wheel

Here’s a fun idea to use with your kindergarten or pre-school kids as a nice routine to start the class off with. Make a wheel out of paper with the days on it. Then, students have to turn the wheel to the correct day.

#18: Information Gap Activities

I love to use information gap activities with my TEFL students. In this case, you’d want to find out related to schedules and give each student half the information. Then, they have to work together to recreate the entire weekly schedule by talking to each other and asking questions.

Sounds like something you want to try? You can check it out here:

ESL Information Gap Activities .

#19: Listening for a Specific Thing

Helping students with listening can sometimes be quite overwhelming but it can be helpful if we focus on only 1 or 2 specific things . For example, in a listening passage about a weekly schedule, maybe what the person is doing on Tuesday night and Saturday morning. Then, on the second listening, students can attempt to add more to the schedule. Start small and then go for more details on the second and third time through.

#20: ESL Review Activities

When you’re introducing any new vocabulary to your students, review is key if you want your students to retain what you’ve taught them. Here are some of the ideas for doing that:

ESL Review Activities and Games

days-of-the-week-games-esl

Days of the week games

#21: Closest in Meaning

This is a simple review activity that can be used for just about any level. Write down one target sentence on the whiteboard or a PowerPoint slide. Then, write down 2 or 3 more sentences, one of which is very similar in meaning to the target. Students have to choose which one matches most closely. For example:

Target Sentence

  • I love to play soccer on weekends.

Other Sentences

  • I enjoy playing soccer at night with friends.
  • My team usually plays soccer on Saturday or Sunday.
  • I have soccer practice on Tuesday night.

The best fit is obviously the middle sentence. Find out more about this simple activity here:

Closest in Meaning .

#22: Daily Routine ESL Activities

Daily routines and days of the week are very closely related to each other. Check out some of the top ideas for ESL activities and games for routines here:

Daily Routine ESL Activities .

#23: Try out the Test-Teach-Test Approach

Unless students are absolute beginners, they may already know a lot about the days of the week. Why not test them first to find out what they don’t know so you can focus your lesson on that? Have a look here to find out more:

#24: Man/Woman on the Street Interview

A common activity in ESL textbooks for this unit is to get students to describe their activities for a certain day of the week, usually one day that they go to school or work and then one day on the weekend.

To spice things up a bit, I like to do this man/woman on the street interview activity. It turns something old (interviewing a partner) and makes it into something novel and fun. Find out more about it here:

Man/Woman on the Street Interview Activity.

#25: Postcards ESL Writing Activity

If you can get your hands on some old postcards, try out this fun writing activity. Students have to pretend that they are on vacation somewhere and are writing a postcard to a friend or family member.

In order to practice the days of the week, have students describe what they did each day for a certain number of days. Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday for example. Try it out:

Postcards ESL Activity .

#26: Days of the Week Relay Race

Divide the class into teams and set up a relay race. Place flashcards with the days of the week at one end of the room and an empty box at the other end for each team. The first player from each team runs to the flashcards, picks up the card with a day of the week, and places it in their team’s box. The relay continues until all the days of the week are sorted correctly. The team that finishes first wins.

#27: Days of the Week Board Game

Create a board game where students move their game pieces along a path while practicing the days of the week. Each square on the board can have a task or question related to the days of the week, such as “Name a day that comes after Monday” or “Spell the word ‘Wednesday’ backward.”

#28: Days of the Week Jigsaw Puzzle

Create a jigsaw puzzle with a picture or illustration that represents a specific day of the week. Cut the puzzle into pieces and distribute them to the students. They have to work together to assemble the puzzle and identify the day of the week depicted in the picture.

Days of the Week Worksheets and Printables

February 10, 2021 by Printabulls Team 10 Comments

Printable-Days-of-the-Week-Feature-Image

Pre-school and kindergarten-aged children love learning about the days of the week. It is so rewarding for them to know what the days are (and in order!), to point them out on calendars, and be able to tell everyone what day it is! Below, we have a whole bunch of free printables–50 to be exact–to help you teach your child(ren) or your class all about the days of the week. There are two different learning methods we’ve used:

1. The first type of printable includes days of the week worksheets and activity sheets. These are the kind of learning activities that children do at their table or desk. Whether it’s coloring, matching, filling in the blanks, or cutting and pasting, each activity or worksheet is hands-on and interactive–a sure way to keep them engaged. Each one helps them learn the days of the week, and some of them go a little bit further by teaching them concepts like “today”, “yesterday”, “tomorrow”, etc.

2. The second type of printable available below are signs and interactive displays that you would put around your classroom, or schoolroom if you are homeschooling. You could simply cut them out and put them around the room or on a board, or you could use them as part of a morning routine and have the children recite what the day is, what yesterday was, and what tomorrow will be. These can also be helpful as children are learning to write the date, in case they still need help with spelling the days of the week.

All you need to do now is select which printable(s) below will work best for you, click on the image, download the printable PDF file to your computer, and print! It really is just that easy!

Whether you choose to use one teaching method/printable type or the other (or both!) we know that these days of the week printables will be an excellent tool for helping children learn all about Sundays and Saturdays and all the days in between!

If you like these, make sure to check out our months of the year worksheets and printables .

Helpful Supplies

Here are a few helpful supplies we’ve found when using these worksheets and printables:

Laminator – A good laminator is perfect for the printables meant for your homeschooling or classroom walls.

Lamination sheets – Replacement sheets for your laminator.

Cardstock – Our favorite cardstock! Perfect for the printables that end up on walls (after laminating) so they last even longer!

Paper – Affordable and good-quality paper!

Paper cutter – Perfect for straight cuts without breaking the bank or needing a massive paper cutter that isn’t portable!

Scissors – Our favorite pair of scissors. Perfect for any size or cut!

IR-2024-45, Feb. 21, 2024

WASHINGTON — During the busiest time of the tax filing season, the Internal Revenue Service kicked off its 2024 Tax Time Guide series to help remind taxpayers of key items they’ll need to file a 2023 tax return.

As part of its four-part, weekly Tax Time Guide series, the IRS continues to provide new and updated resources to help taxpayers file an accurate tax return. Taxpayers can count on IRS.gov for updated resources and tools along with a special free help page available around the clock. Taxpayers are also encouraged to read Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) for additional guidance.

Essentials to filing an accurate tax return

The deadline this tax season for filing Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return , or 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors , is April 15, 2024. However, those who live in Maine or Massachusetts will have until April 17, 2024, to file due to official holidays observed in those states.

Taxpayers are advised to wait until they receive all their proper tax documents before filing their tax returns. Filing without all the necessary documents could lead to mistakes and potential delays.

It’s important for taxpayers to carefully review their documents for any inaccuracies or missing information. If any issues are found, taxpayers should contact the payer immediately to request a correction or confirm that the payer has their current mailing or email address on file.

Creating an IRS Online Account can provide taxpayers with secure access to information about their federal tax account, including payment history, tax records and other important information.

Having organized tax records can make the process of preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier and may also help taxpayers identify any overlooked deductions or credits .

Taxpayers who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or ITIN may need to renew it if it has expired and is required for a U.S. federal tax return. If an expiring or expired ITIN is not renewed, the IRS can still accept the tax return, but it may result in processing delays or delays in credits owed.

Changes to credits and deductions for tax year 2023

Standard deduction amount increased. For 2023, the standard deduction amount has been increased for all filers. The amounts are:

  • Single or married filing separately — $13,850.
  • Head of household — $20,800.
  • Married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse — $27,700.

Additional child tax credit amount increased. The maximum additional child tax credit amount has increased to $1,600 for each qualifying child.

Child tax credit enhancements. Many changes to the Child tax credit (CTC) that had been implemented by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 have expired.

However, the IRS continues to closely monitor legislation being considered by Congress affecting the Child Tax Credit. The IRS reminds taxpayers eligible for the Child Tax Credit that they should not wait to file their 2023 tax return this filing season. If Congress changes the CTC guidelines, the IRS will automatically make adjustments for those who have already filed so no additional action will be needed by those eligible taxpayers.

Under current law, for tax year 2023, the following currently apply:

  • The enhanced credit allowed for qualifying children under age 6 and children under age 18 has expired. For 2023, the initial amount of the CTC is $2,000 for each qualifying child. The credit amount begins to phase out where AGI income exceeds $200,000 ($400,000 in the case of a joint return). The amount of the CTC that can be claimed as a refundable credit is limited as it was in 2020 except that the maximum ACTC amount for each qualifying child increased to $1,500.
  • The increased age allowance for a qualifying child has expired. A child must be under age 17 at the end of 2023 to be a qualifying child.

Changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The enhancements for taxpayers without a qualifying child implemented by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 will not apply for tax year 2023. To claim the EITC without a qualifying child in 2023, taxpayers must be at least age 25 but under age 65 at the end of 2023. If a taxpayer is married filing a joint return, one spouse must be at least age 25 but under age 65 at the end of 2023.

Taxpayers may find more information on Child tax credits in the Instructions for Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) .

New Clean Vehicle Credit. The credit for new qualified plug-in electric drive motor vehicles has changed. This credit is now known as the Clean Vehicle Credit. The maximum amount of the credit and some of the requirements to claim the credit have changed. The credit is reported on Form 8936, Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit , and on Form 1040, Schedule 3.

More information on these and other credit and deduction changes for tax year 2023 may be found in the Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) , taxpayer guide.

1099-K reporting requirements have not changed for tax year 2023

Following feedback from taxpayers, tax professionals and payment processors, and to reduce taxpayer confusion, the IRS recently released Notice 2023-74 announcing a delay of the new $600 reporting threshold for tax year 2023 on Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions . The previous reporting thresholds will remain in place for 2023.

The IRS has published a fact sheet with further information to assist taxpayers concerning changes to 1099-K reporting requirements for tax year 2023.

Form 1099-K reporting requirements

Taxpayers who take direct payment by credit, debit or gift cards for selling goods or providing services by customers or clients should get a Form 1099-K from their payment processor or payment settlement entity no matter how many payments they got or how much they were for.

If they used a payment app or online marketplace and received over $20,000 from over 200 transactions,

the payment app or online marketplace is required to send a Form 1099-K. However, they can send a Form 1099-K with lower amounts. Whether or not the taxpayer receives a Form 1099-K, they must still report any income on their tax return.

What’s taxable? It’s the profit from these activities that’s taxable income. The Form 1099-K shows the gross or total amount of payments received. Taxpayers can use it and other records to figure out the actual taxes they owe on any profits. Remember that all income, no matter the amount, is taxable unless the tax law says it isn’t – even if taxpayers don’t get a Form 1099-K.

What’s not taxable? Taxpayers shouldn’t receive a Form 1099-K for personal payments, including money received as a gift and for repayment of shared expenses. That money isn’t taxable. To prevent getting an inaccurate Form 1099-K, note those payments as “personal,” if possible.

Good recordkeeping is key. Be sure to keep good records because it helps when it’s time to file a tax return. It’s a good idea to keep business and personal transactions separate to make it easier to figure out what a taxpayer owes.

For details on what to do if a taxpayer gets a Form 1099-K in error or the information on their form is incorrect, visit IRS.gov/1099k  or find frequently asked questions at Form 1099-K FAQs .

Direct File pilot program provides a new option this year for some

The IRS launched the Direct File pilot program during the 2024 tax season. The pilot will give eligible taxpayers an option to prepare and electronically file their 2023 tax returns, for free, directly with the IRS.

The Direct File pilot program will be offered to eligible taxpayers in 12 pilot states who have relatively simple tax returns reporting only certain types of income and claiming limited credits and deductions. The 12 states currently participating in the Direct File pilot program are Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state and Wyoming. Taxpayers can check their eligibility at directfile.irs.gov .

The Direct File pilot is currently in the internal testing phase and will be more widely available in mid-March. Taxpayers can get the latest news about the pilot at Direct File pilot news and sign up to be notified when Direct File is open to new users.

Finally, for comprehensive information on all these and other changes for tax year 2023, taxpayers and tax professionals are encouraged to read the Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) , taxpayer guide, as well as visit other topics of taxpayer interest on IRS.gov.

Students in a Seattle English class were told that their love of reading and writing is a characteristic of “white supremacy,” in the latest Seattle Public Schools high school controversy. The lesson plan has one local father speaking out, calling it “educational malpractice.”

As part of the Black Lives Matter at School Week, World Literature and Composition students at Lincoln High School were given a handout with definitions of the “9 characteristics of white supremacy,” according to the father of a student. Given the subject matter of the class, the father found it odd this particular lesson was brought up.

The Seattle high schoolers were told that “Worship of the Written Word” is white supremacy because it is “an erasure of the wide range of ways we communicate with each other.” By this definition, the very subject of World Literature and Composition is racist. It also chides the idea that we hyper-value written communication because it’s a form of “honoring only what is written and even then only what is written to a narrow standard, full of misinformation and lies.” The worksheet does not provide any context for what it actually means.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” the father explained to the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Everything is ‘white supremacy’ at Seattle Public Schools

The father asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution against his child by Seattle Public Schools. He said the other pieces of the worksheet were equally disturbing.

The worksheet labels “objectivity,” “individualism,” and “perfectionism” as white supremacy. If students deny their own racism — or that any of the nine characteristics are legitimately racist — is also white supremacy. Denialism or being overly defensive is a racist example of an “entitlement to name what is an [sic] isn’t racism and that those with power have a right to be shielded from the stresses of antiracist work.”

The father argues the concepts are “incoherent and cannot stand any sort of reasoned analysis.” And he notes that it’s set up to ensure students accept every concept without ever questioning the claims.

“How is a 15-year-old kid supposed to object in class when ‘denial and defensiveness’ is itself a characteristic of white supremacy? This is truly educational malpractice.”

White students told to apologize in yet another Seattle high school controversy

Another aspect of the white supremacy lesson at this Seattle school involved a video titled “Getting Called Out: How to Apologize” by Franchesca Ramsey. It’s reportedly presented in the context of white students expressing what the teacher views as “white supremacy.”

“Getting called out, in this context of this video, is when you say or do something that upholds the oppression of a marginalized group of people,” Ramsey says.

Ramsey says her advice is about becoming an ally and “doing the right thing.” She explains you shouldn’t “get defensive” by denying you’re oppressing marginalized people, even if you’re not actually oppressing marginalized people.

“What you really need to do is listen because this is where the other person is hopefully going to explain to you what you did wrong and how you can explain it,” she says.

In the context of the worksheet on white supremacy, it seems clear that students must merely accept that they are upholding oppression. Using the worksheet, if a student defends independence or a love of reading and writing, that student is supposed to accept that it’s white supremacist thinking and stop acting independently or loving to read and write.

Father says Seattle Public Schools isn’t serving students

The father says he taught his son to be on the lookout for this kind of Radical Left indoctrination. It’s why his son flagged the worksheets to him. But he notes that the curriculum doesn’t exactly help his kid on the subject he’s supposed to be learning.

“My problem with this curriculum is that this is supposed to be a writing and literature class and lessons like these do nothing to help my kid become a better writer,” the father explained. “I’m sure Lincoln administration will point to the high ELA proficiency scores but the high proportion of HCC [highly capable] kids (40% of the student body) is a big factor. With so many smart, hard working kids (white supremacists) it’s easy to support these luxury beliefs but system-wide only 63% of kids are proficient in English. Is this really the best use of class time? ”

The father also wonders how many students will fall for this toxic thinking across Seattle schools where concepts around white supremacy are so clearly partisan.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” he said.

Seattle Public Schools spokespeople provided their normal response to requests for comment: none.

C.D.C. Considers Ending 5-Day Isolation Period for Covid

Americans may be advised that it’s safe to return to regular routines after one day without a fever.

A medical worker in a yellow plastic gown and a mask talks to a person in a car at a drive-through clinic.

By Apoorva Mandavilli

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering loosening its recommendations regarding how long people should isolate after testing positive for the coronavirus, another reflection of changing attitudes and norms as the pandemic recedes.

Under the proposed guidelines, Americans would no longer be advised to isolate for five days before returning to work or school. Instead, they might return to their routines if they have been fever free for at least 24 hours without medication, the same standard applied to the influenza and respiratory syncytial viruses.

The proposal would align the C.D.C.’s advice with revised isolation recommendations in Oregon and California . The shift was reported earlier by The Washington Post, but it is still under consideration, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.

The C.D.C. last changed its policy on isolation in late 2021, when it scaled down the recommended period to five days from 10. If adopted, the new approach would signal that Covid has taken a place alongside other routine respiratory infections.

But by focusing on the isolation policy for Covid, the agency is squandering an opportunity to foster better public health policies, several experts said.

“From a long-term public health perspective, I think this sets really an unfortunate precedent,” said Dr. Syra Madad, senior director of the special pathogens program at NYC Health and Hospitals.

She urged the C.D.C. to “seize this opportunity to truly change how we respond to deadly epidemics and pandemics and advocate for national, guaranteed paid sick and family leave instead of caving into the easier option of eliminating the isolation period.”

Some researchers worried that Americans would interpret the new advice to mean that Covid was no longer a threat. At its peak this winter, Covid claimed about 1,500 lives a week. In adults older than 65, deaths from Covid have been two to four times as common as those from the flu.

“There’s still a lot of people getting Covid and dying from Covid in the U.S.,” said Dr. Boghuma Titanji, an infectious diseases physician at Emory University in Atlanta.

“When you make a public health recommendation, it’s not supposed to be based on what people are already doing,” she said. Instead, she added, the advice must be grounded in evidence.

Even people who have only a mild illness may go on to develop long Covid, for which there is no treatment as yet, Dr. Titanji added.

The proposed recommendations also seem not to take into account older Americans, or those who are immunocompromised or otherwise at risk of severe outcomes from Covid, said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public Health.

Dr. Nuzzo said she has an aunt with cancer who had twice contracted Covid in a health care facility. “I do feel for people who now feel even less protected,” she said.

At the very least, the C.D.C. should advise that people who end isolation after one fever-free day also wear N95 masks or the equivalent when leaving their homes, she added.

“Let’s not pretend you’re suddenly not contagious” after one day, Dr. Nuzzo said. “We have to be very clear and transparent about that — to say that we think that there still is a risk.”

Masking remains a deeply controversial issue in the United States. But many people eschew masks only because they fear drawing attention or vitriol, said Dr. Jay Varma, chief medical officer at Siga Technologies and a former deputy commissioner of health for New York City.

Over time, sick people wearing masks could become the norm , like wearing condoms to prevent H.I.V. infections or helmets to prevent head injuries, he said.

“A strong group of people oppose wearing masks now, but that’s not fixed in time,” he added. “People change, people die off, kids become adults.”

C.D.C. officials declined to discuss the proposed changes. “We will continue to make decisions based on the best evidence and science to keep communities healthy and safe,” the agency said in a statement.

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of Covid deaths earlier this winter. It was 1,500 per week, not per day.

What to Know About R.S.V.

What are the symptoms of respiratory syncytial virus? Who is most at risk? Are there tests for it? Is it Covid, the flu or R.S.V. ? Here’s what to know about R.S.V.

In May, the F.D.A. approved GSK’s vaccine for R.S.V. for adults who are 60 and older. The vaccine, sold as Arexvy, became the first in the world approved for sale  to protect older adults from the virus.

F.D.A. experts also approved a R.S.V. vaccine by Pfizer to be administered to pregnant women  and aimed at protecting infants from the virus.

In July, the F.D.A. also approved a monoclonal antibody shot , called Beyfortus, that is aimed at preventing R.S.V. in infants and vulnerable toddlers .

The approval of the vaccines and the monoclonal antibody shot has allowed adults and children to receive protection against R.S.V. for the first time. But  some pregnant women and infants appear to have received the wrong shots .

Four-day week made permanent for most UK firms in world’s biggest trial

Research shows 51% that took part permanently adopted the change, while 89% still operating policy one year on

Most of the UK companies that took part in the world’s biggest ever four-day working week trial have made the policy permanent, research shows.

Of the 61 organisations that took part in a six-month UK pilot in 2022, 54 (89%) are still operating the policy a year later, and 31 (51%) have made the change permanent.

More than half (55%) of project managers and CEOs said a four-day week – in which staff worked 100% of their output in 80% of their time – had a positive impact on their organisation, the report found.

For 82% this included positive effects on staff wellbeing, 50% found it reduced staff turnover, while 32% said it improved job recruitment. Nearly half (46%) said working and productivity improved.

The report’s author, Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College, said the results showed “real and long lasting” effects. “Physical and mental health, and work-life balance are significantly better than at six months. Burnout and life satisfaction improvements held steady,” she said.

But Matthew Percival, a director at the Confederation of British Industry, said the four-day week was not a “one size fits all answer” and would be “unlikely to pay for itself in many industries”.

He said: “If businesses have the budget to add to their offer to employees, then they will be considering the relative merits of reducing working hours compared to increasing pay, pensions or paid parental leave, as well as better supporting health and wellbeing.”

The four-day working week report, by the thinktank Autonomy and researchers from the University of Cambridge, the University of Salford and Boston College in the US, found that “many of the significant benefits found during the initial trial have persisted 12 months on”, although they noted that it was a small sample size.

Almost all (96%) of staff said their personal life had benefited, and 86% felt they performed better at work, while 38% felt their organisation had become more efficient, and 24% said it had helped with caring responsibilities.

Organisations reduced working hours by an average of 6.6 hours to reach a 31.6-hour week. Most gave their staff one full day off a week, either universal or staggered. The report found that protected days off were more effective than those on which staff were “on call” or sometimes expected to work.

The most successful companies made their four-day week “clear, confident and well-communicated”, and co-designed their policies between staff and management, thinking carefully about how to adapt work processes, the authors wrote.

Challenges encountered by some companies included working with clients and stakeholders where four-day weeks were not the norm, or where the policy was implemented unevenly, leading to resentment among some staff.

This month, the Scottish government launched a four-day working week trial for some public services. Autonomy is calling for the Westminster government to introduce policies that would enable its wider take-up, including giving workers the right to request a four-day week with no loss of pay, a public sector trial, and funding to support the shift in the private sector.

Paul Oliver, chief operating officer at Citizens Advice Gateshead, said that a four-day week helped his employees cope with a “demanding role”, and improved retention as the charity was unable to pay high salaries. “We wanted to see a way to improve staff conditions so they would be better rested and could give more to work,” he added.

The greater efficiency introduced by the pilot meant it exceeded its targets, including improving the quality of advice and the number of clients spoken to, expanding to a seven-day service thanks to greater flexibility, increasing profitability and reducing levels of staff sickness. “We’re breaking out of the nine to five model, which doesn’t work for our society or our clients,” Oliver said.

Mark Downs, chief executive of the Royal Society of Biology, said his organisation was keeping the policy – in which staff divvied up Mondays and Fridays off between them – because it had been positively received by staff and external partners.

One unexpected benefit he encountered was that days when he was working and most other staff were off were much more productive. He also felt it made RSB a more attractive employer, with applicants citing the four-day week as a draw.

Anthony Painter, director of policy at the Chartered Management Institute, said he was “following the four-day week trials with interest” since CMI research had shown that employees valued flexible working above all else, including pay rises.

He added that managers would need to be better trained to implement the changes. “They will need the very best managers in place to ensure that flexibility and productivity can be two sides of the same coin – better ways of working,” Painter said.

A government spokesperson said: “We have no plans to introduce a four-day working week. Ultimately it is for employers and employees to agree what working arrangements work best for them, and we will be making changes to our flexible working legislation in April, including the right to request flexible working from day 1 of a new job.”
