“The One and Only Me” – Family traits book & lesson ideas

family similarities worksheet

It’s a fantastic introduction to inheritance and variation of traits for children.

Poppy has red hair, freckles, blue eyes, and likes making pizza. She says that she has two siblings that look alike and asks, “why do I looks so different?” She learns all about cells, genes (not jeans), DNA, recessive and dominant, and which traits are inherited and which aren’t.

family similarities worksheet

Some parts of who we are are determined by many genes and also the world around us. One page talks about personality. Scientists aren’t sure where that comes from! My favorite page is a picture pedigree chart showing which ancestors had red hair and passed down the recessive red hair gene. I also love the page about the history of our genes. “Your genes have quite a history! They tell a story about all the people in your family who came before you, from all over the world, back through the ages. Who knows whose genes the three of you might share!”

The cub scouts were riveted. At one point during the book’s discussion of the recessive light eyes gene and asked, “who has light eyes? Do you know where you got them from?” There was a hubub of discussion for a minute until I started reading again. Then a big hush went over them as they listened attentively.

After reading the book, I gave them a family traits worksheet that they could use to collect data about their family. They all wanted to take off their shoes to check the length of their second toe, but we decided to wait on that data point!

Inherited Traits Worksheet

The second page of the worksheet is a table about which traits are dominant and which are recessive.

After this we did a family tree worksheet and a hands on play dough pedigree activity – thank you Emily Schroeder for this idea .

The activity was a success! The cub scouts even shared a story about one of their ancestors. They were completely engaged.

Teaching with The Book

On the front inside cover flap of The One and Only Me , it says “learn more about the genetics of inheritance at www.23andme.com/gen101

“The topics of inheritance and variation of traits are part of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) taught in elementary school classrooms in the U.S.  Teachers can find supporting resources for teaching inheritance and other genetics concepts addressed by The One and Only Me at www.23andme.com/education .”

I looked at my library, but it wasn’t available, probably because it just came out in 2016. I suggested that they purchase it for their collection using their online book suggestion form. And they did!

Matching Family Members Worksheet

family similarities worksheet

While not always the case, most of the time family members look a lot like each other thanks to genetics. Begin teaching this concept to your child by reviewing this interesting science worksheet that tasks kids with matching similar folks together. Help your child examine each person on the page, looking carefully for similar facial and bodily features. Then circle all those that can possibly be from the same family.

Introduction to Genetics – Similarities and Differences between Family Members

  • activities for teaching biology

Remote Ready Biology Learning Activities

family similarities worksheet

To begin this activity, students propose a hypothesis about how genes contribute to the similarities and differences in appearance of family members. Students repeatedly refine their hypothesis as they learn more.

Students learn that different versions of a gene give the instructions for making different versions of a protein which can result in different characteristics. Next, students review how genes are transmitted from parents to offspring through the processes of meiosis and fertilization. Then, students analyze several examples that illustrate how inheritance of genes can result in family resemblance and/or differences.

Concepts covered include Punnett squares, dominant and recessive alleles, incomplete dominance, and polygenic inheritance.

The Student Handout is available in the first two attached files and as a  Google doc  designed for use in online instruction and distance learning. The Teacher Notes, available in the last two attached files, provide instructional suggestions and background information and explain how this activity is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.

iwaldron's picture

2021 revision

The Student Handout has been reorganized and revised to focus on the anchoring phenomenon of similarities and differences in the characteristics of family members and the driving question of how genes contribute to these similarities and differences. Questions, figures, and explanations guide students to an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the answers to the driving question. Ingrid

Patricia Nicoll's picture

Isn't there more than one gene responsible for pigmentation? This seems really simplified. Also on the first link, the first page shows Aa as the genotype for albinism. In your simplified explanation shouldn't it be aa?

Corrections and explanations

You are absolutely correct about both points. The first sentence on the top of page 5 of the Student Handout is "The many different skin colors that people inherit are caused by multiple alleles of multiple genes." The Teacher Notes suggest that, after question 16, you may want to ask your students whether the two alleles of the gene they have been analyzing could cause all the different skin colors that different people have. A discussion of this question would make a good transition to the next section. Unfortunately, my word processor capitalizes words sometimes even when I don't want it to, and I didn't catch the erroneous capitalization of aa. I am working on a revision which corrects this error. I will post it later today. Thank you for your comments, Ingrid

With Prison Certain and Death Likely, Why Did Navalny Return?

An activist who thrived on agitation, he feared irrelevancy in exile. Winning new respect as he continued to lambast the Kremlin from behind bars cost him his life.

  • Share full article

Aleksei A. Navalny surrounded by officials and people taking photographs with phones.

By Neil MacFarquhar

During the years he ran The New York Times Moscow bureau from 2014 to 2019, Neil MacFarquhar covered Mr. Navalny at numerous political rallies and protests.

There was one question that Russians repeatedly asked the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny, who died in a remote Arctic penal colony on Friday, and he confessed that he found it a little annoying.

Why, after surviving a fatal poisoning attempt widely blamed on the Kremlin, had he returned to Russia from his extended convalescence abroad to face certain imprisonment and possible death? Even his prison guards, turning off their recording devices, asked him why he had come back, he said.

“I don’t want to give up either my country or my beliefs,” Mr. Navalny wrote in a Jan. 17 Facebook post to mark the third anniversary of his return and arrest in 2021. “I cannot betray either the first or the second. If your beliefs are worth something, you must be willing to stand up for them. And if necessary, make some sacrifices.”

That was the direct answer, but for many Russians, both those who knew him and those who did not, the issue was more complex. Some of them considered it almost a classical Greek tragedy: The hero, knowing that he is doomed, returns home anyway because, well, if he didn’t, he would not be the hero.

Mr. Navalny’s motto was that there was no reason to fear the authoritarian government of President Vladimir V. Putin. He wanted to put that into practice, Russian commentators said, and as an activist who thrived on agitation, he feared sinking into irrelevancy in exile. The decision won him new respect and followers as he continued to lambast the Kremlin from his prison cell, but it also cost him his life.

“Navalny was about action,” said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Kremlin speechwriter who sometimes had differences with Mr. Navalny over that job. “For him politics was action, not just democracy and theory like it is for many in the Russian opposition. They are quite content to sit abroad, speaking and speaking and speaking without doing anything with their hands. For him that was unbearable.”

The return represented both his unbridled emotional attachment to the cause and his deep sincerity, Mr. Gallyamov added.

Still, it prompted extensive bafflement and curiosity, not least because he had a wife and two adolescent children who stayed in exile.

“Many have written throughout these three years: ‘Why did he come back, what kind of idiocy, what kind of senseless self-sacrifice?’” Andrey Loshak, a Russian journalist, wrote in a tribute published by Meduza, an independent news agency. “For those who knew him, it was natural: You see him in life and understand that a person cannot do otherwise.”

Mr. Loshak said that after Mr. Navalny’s return, he had posted the opposition leader’s picture with just one word for the caption: “Hero.” Before, he had considered that kind of self-sacrifice as the stuff of movies. “He was a beacon in this darkness — here he sits somewhere in these terrible punishment cells and laughs at them,” he wrote. “It shows that this is possible.”

Some people were wary of Mr. Navalny. He began his political career in the nationalist camp and made some offensive comments about immigrants. Later, he characterized it as a temporary step needed to start building the opposition from someplace, because the nationalists were the only group then willing to take to the streets.

A 28-year-old man living in Belgorod, near Ukraine , said that he had long been unsure of Mr. Navalny, and never considered him presidential material, but his return to Russia inspired new respect.

“Very dignified behavior and dignified acceptance of the inevitable,” the man wrote online in response to questions, declining to use his name while the Russian authorities were arresting some of those who mourned openly. “Aleksei was a brave man, worthy of respect, an example for many.”

Mr. Navalny himself expressed frustration that many Russians refused to take his decision to return at face value, sometimes implying that he had made some kind of background deal with the Kremlin. Perhaps he failed to express himself clearly enough, he wrote in the January Facebook post.

There were some echoes of history in the return. In 1917, after years of exile in Europe, Lenin memorably steamed into Finland Station in St. Petersburg by train, igniting tumultuous demonstrations that eventually brought the Bolsheviks to power and gave birth to the Soviet Union.

Mr. Gallyamov said he sometimes regretted that Mr. Navalny had returned in the middle of January, deep in the Russian winter and distant from any elections, so the protests ignited by his immediate arrest at a Moscow airport did not translate into any sustained political reaction.

Mr. Putin thought at various times that he had solved his Navalny problem, not least by letting him leave to recuperate in Germany after he had been poisoned. The perception was that anyone in their right mind would not come back, but Mr. Navalny did.

Even in prison, Mr. Navalny became an issue for the Kremlin with his ability to make his views heard, like endorsing the call for all voters in the coming March 15-17 presidential election to show up at the polls at noon on March 17 as a silent protest against the Ukraine war.

“When Navalny came back, it was a nightmare for Putin. People were saying that he was a survivor,” said Yevgenia Albats, a prominent Russian journalist now at Harvard University. Some went even further, she said, suggesting that he had been resurrected from the dead.

In authoritarian regimes, such political challenges often boil down to a duel between two men to see who can outlast the other, and that is what happened in this case, Mr. Gallyamov said.

“Deep down, it is a psychological fight between two characters over who is the more powerful person,” he said. “Since Navalny was a real challenger, a real fighter, that is why he stayed on the agenda.”

The most common reaction to his death among those who saw Mr. Navalny as the most viable opposition leader was that he had been murdered in prison, either directly or through three years of increasingly harsh conditions. The Kremlin, ever less tolerant of any criticism amid its stumbling war effort in Ukraine, silenced the moderates and gave free rein to the hawks, dooming Mr. Navalny, they said.

Asked about Mr. Navalny’s death, Dmitri S. Peskov, the spokesman for Mr. Putin, told reporters that he had no information on the cause of death but that it would be determined by doctors.

Ultimately, what drove Mr. Navalny to return to Russia was the fearlessness that he thought could bring him enormous political power, said Kirill Rogov, a former Russian government adviser who now leads Re: Russia, a Vienna-based think tank. “Navalny challenged them with his fearlessness,” he said. “They do not tolerate fearlessness.”

The example in South Africa of Nelson Mandela, who emerged from decades in prison a hero, troubled Mr. Putin, Mr. Rogov added.

In 2021, on the airplane back to Russia from Germany, Mr. Navalny sat next to his wife, Yulia, and together they watched “Rick and Morty,” an animated series involving a mad scientist.

At his first trial a month later, he quoted from the show in court: “To live is to risk it all,” he said. “Otherwise, you are just an inert chunk of randomly assembled molecules drifting wherever the universe blows you.”

Bethanne Doud is now able to find peace and some humor in the situation that left her mom’s ashes missing for four months.

Doud’s father was traveling back from spending months on Mackinac Island.

In just a 25-minute ferry ride from the island to Michigan, the bag containing his wife Harriet’s ashes disappeared.

The family hoped the ashes would be returned but made peace that they were gone.

“I just said, ‘You know what, wherever she is, that’s where she’s meant to be,’” said Doud.

Destiny Carroll works at the Goodwill near the island and saw the ashes had been donated.

She had no idea what to do with them but wanted to help get them home to the Doud family.

“I posted on the Cheboygan Rant and Rave group that we have here where thousands of people are in, and it was only up for about an hour, and I had so many people messaging me saying they found the family, they found the family,” explained Carroll.

Doud’s cousin was connected to the post after a friend noticed they had the same last name.

The cousin then told the family that Harriet’s missing ashes had been found.

“I went to the page, and I posted like those are my mom’s ashes like I honestly couldn’t believe it,” Doud says.

It’s ironic, Doud says, that the ashes were found at a Goodwill because she and her mom often shopped there together.

“Her and her mom used to take weekly trips to Goodwill and just go shopping, so we both said she just wanted one last look in there before she goes home,” Doud said.

Doud says they will always know Carroll as the hero in this story.

“The fact that she’s calling me a hero is huge,” Carroll said. “It’s not the title that I wanted. I just wanted this lady’s ashes back home.”

How the ashes ended up at Goodwill will probably never be known, but Doud said her mother needed one last adventure before settling in her final resting place.
