I love your blog too, but the yellow is tricky to read…maybe a bit of a darker shade mixed in would do the trick. It's okay on the list on the side, but the section where you introduce yourself is really hard to read. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas.

Hi Erica. I would love to buy your spelling packet. I am also interested in your word list. Are they included. My team mate and I are looking for new spelling words for our first graders. The list we use do not make sense. Thanks, Julie [email protected]

First Grade Spelling Packets (Curriculum)
Finally! A First Grade Spelling Curriculum that makes sense! I am so excited to share with you spelling packets and curriculum that requires NO PREP and makes teaching spelling FUN! This curriculum is not a random list of words that students memorize one week and then forget the next week. Rather, this is a phonics-based and sight word-based spelling curriculum that helps students gain spelling mastery ! And it’s FUN!
Click the video below for a detailed outline of the 1st Grade Spelling Curriculum:
How are the words chosen?
This first grade spelling curriculum focuses on a method called word study, which is phonics-based rather than rote memorization of random lists. Also incorporated into the curriculum are sight words .
Words 1-6: Phonics Based Spelling
The first 6 words each week are focused on a phonics skill or spelling rule. Like phonics-based reading instruction, phonics-based spelling builds a deep understanding of the patterns in words. As a result, students will not need to learn to spell one word at a time. Instead, they will learn patterns that they can apply to any word. With phonics-based spelling students will systematically and incrementally improve their ability to spell both simple and complex words.
Words 7-10: Sight Words
The final 4 words each week are sight words. Sight words are the most used words in the English language. Being able to fluently write these words is key to students developing effective written communication.
By the end of the year, students will cover the Pre-Primer, Primer, and First Grade Dolch sight words. Together these 133 words make up more than half of the words we read and write. Mastering these basic words will allow students to focus their writing efforts on formulating ideas and spelling tricky words.
Note: There are some review weeks that do not include sight words.
Through this method of spelling, students are provided with a balanced literacy approach that will help increase their ability to read, write, and spell! It’s a spelling program that makes sense!
How are the Weekly Packets Organized?
Each week, students get a packet that has engaging practice for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Friday, student are ready to take their spelling test! The cover of each packet contains the spelling rule for the week. Students can refer back to the rule as they practice their words.
What is included?
- 38 Weeks of fun Spelling packets Monday – Thursday practice/ Friday Test
- Home Connection Parent and Friends Letter
- 11 Spelling Menus – one for each new Phonics Skill
- Packet Covers with the Spelling Rule
- Flashcards for each List

I really need this grade 1 and possibly grade 2 full 38-week phonics set. How much is it and how long will it take to be delivered ( I am in China teaching grade 1 at present and finding good resources is a challenge).?

Jodi, I use something like this weekly for my spelling homework. I like the variety of options it offers and I find that most families do, too. It's interesting that a few choose the do your own thing option of writing words 4 times daily and skip the fun and silly ways to practice. I think making it due once a week is huge for today's busy families. Nice job!
This looks absolutely amazing!! I love the option of a menu since so many families are busy! Thank you so much!!

I have used these this year and have had great feedback from the parents about this! And the kids love it too!
I really love this in place of the worksheets we have been doing forever. The fact that it is editable makes it valuable for us and our curriculum. We want to provide activities of application across the subject areas. That being said, it would be easier for my team (who takes turns with tasks such as homework, newsletters, etc.) if each month/week was in a separate folder instead of a long scrolling document. Does that make sense? That way, we can edit August and save only August in its own folder for next year easy access. I also wish there was a way to convert pdf to google docs in drive. I tried to take the pdf and open in google docs, but it doesn't transfer. Does anyone out there have a trick to doing this? That would be the best way for collaboration. Thanks again for your hard work. Consider separating each page 🙂
Hi Jodi! I recently purchased these menus and I, too, am excited to try a new approach to homework this year! I need your help—do you have a parent letter that introduces and explains this process of completing homework? I have been trying to compose a letter, but would love some help! Thank you so much! Kris
This is such a clever idea for homework and it’s differentiated without the extra work of having to make a million copies! I am starting to use it this week and I am so excited!!

Spelling Menus For All Year
3-5 · All Freebies · PK-2
Hey teacher friends! Hope everyone is fantastic today!
I was doing some updating yesterday and wanted to freshen up a super popular freebie: my Differentiated Spelling Homework Menu!
I used this menu in third grade (though it could be adapted easily by other grade levels as well), and the students, parents, and administrators loved it! I did too, because I was able to only grade spelling homework once a week, rather than a daily assignment each day.
By assigning the homework on Monday for the rest of the week, it allows families who might have sports or family emergencies to work on the homework throughout the week when it is most convenient for them. A great many parents have verbally shared with me how they loved this option.
Students like it better because they have a choice. They all have to complete the same amount of points {or that can be differentiated as well if needed}, but each child can choose how many assignments he or she needs to complete in order to get to the required level of points each week. And they are able to change it up and choose different activities whenever they like.
I loved it because I was able to grade once a week and also to see the creativity and choices come alive in the work students were turning in. I also didn’t have to run nightly homework copies – or tear out pages in a workbook! Students supplied their work on paper from home. Of course, you will always have a couple who “halfway” do the work – or forget and don’t turn it in at all. That happens though with nightly homework, so the same consequences should result.
I love menus for differentiating and allowing student choice with guidelines in place. The freebie menu packet below comes with a basic plain template with no graphics, along with 12 other monthly “themed” pages, in case you want to change things up a bit to liven it up.
Hopefully your students will love the choice factor as much as mine did! Feel free to pass along the link for this page to other colleagues in your school who also might like a change from the usual spelling routine.
Thanks so much and happy homework-ing!
