16+ Printable French Worksheets at FrenchPod101

How to use frenchpod101’s worksheets.

Just download our French worksheets PDF files and print them out! Then, practice writing out words and phrases on the provided lines on the inside. It’s as simple as that.

How the French alphabet worksheet works:

The first thing any beginner should learn is the alphabet. However, most schools can take a week to teach you the alphabet. But, with these worksheets, you can learn the alphabet in an hour or less!

Just practice writing out the characters inside the worksheet. You’ll even get a chance to practice writing a few simple words. Once you’re done with the alphabet worksheet, feel free to move on to the other French worksheet PDFs.

Here’s how the French writing worksheets work:

In the first part, you’ll get the French word and its meaning, and your job is to write the word in French.

In the second part, you get the French word without any translations. Your job is to write the English translation here.

The third part will test your ability to recall the French words. Here, you only get the English translation. Your job is to try and remember the French word and write it out on the provided line.

By the end, you’ll remember the words because you’re tested on them in multiple ways: 1) recalling the meaning of the French word and 2) recalling the French word from the English translation.

You can also print out several copies of the French worksheet PDFs in order to get extra practice.

5 Reasons Why You Should Learn with Worksheets

  • They’re 100% FREE at FrenchPod101.
  • You get practice writing in French.
  • You get to remember French much better.
  • You’ll be able to speak and understand more French as a result.
  • You’ll never learn if you don’t practice.

You’re here because you want to learn French, right?

Well, If you want to learn and speak flowing French, you can’t just passively read or listen to French and hope it sticks. A few words may stick but you will forget a majority of what you hear and learn. And you’re probably already well aware of how quickly you forget what you learn, right? Let’s change that.

So, if you want to truly learn French, you’ll need to practice. Repeated practice is what cements the French into your brain. And that’s where our French worksheets for beginners come in.

Not only will you learn words, phrases, and French grammar, but you also get a chance to practice what you’ve learned and cement these words into your head. The worksheets are designed to teach and test you, so that you end up remembering the French better.

Best of all? They’re free for FrenchPod101 members. So, download the printable French worksheets, print them out and start practicing French.

The result? You’ll know and speak more French. And of course, you’ll be able to write as well.

9+ Free French Worksheets PDF for Beginners

Looking for free French worksheets?

Here at the Linguajunkie blog, you’ll find a nice collection of French worksheets and French PDF workbooks that are meant for beginners. They’re free as a good starting step in your language journey.

Of course, I do suggest getting a French language program later, but first let’s do worksheets.

How to download these French worksheets and workbooks.

  • Click on the images below to download the PDFs.
  • You can also right click and “save as” to save the PDFs to your device

Remember, since these are worksheets, you need to print out and write on them to do the “work” and get the most out of these.

If you download but don’t use them, you’re never going to learn any French. So, keep that in mind — nothing happens if nothing is done. And you want to speak French one day, right?

1. French Worksheets for the Alphabet

If you’re a beginner…

Then you need to learn the French alphabet so you can read and write in French. Luckily, it’s not too far from the English alphabet although there are some differences — especially with pronunciation. And you’ll need to get used to them. So, download this French worksheet and practice the alphabet.

french alphabet worksheet

2. French Worksheets for Greetings

After you learn the alphabet, what’s next?

It’s time to start practicing writing.

And why not start with the must-know basics — how to say hello in French or how to say bye in French . This French worksheet/workbook will help you master the common greetings. By the time you’re done writing them out, you’ll know them like the back of your hand.

french worksheets for greeting

3. Bundle of 14+ French Worksheets

If you’re looking for some professionally made worksheets…

Here’s a bundle made by FrenchPod101, a popular French learning system. Inside, you’ll find 14+ printable French workbooks and worksheets covering topics like verbs, adjectives, phrases for ordering food, and much more.

Also, if you’re looking for a French learning program, I can recommend them as well. So, click on the image below to grab the bundle and check them out.

4. French Numbers & Number Phrases Workbook

Do you know how to count in French?

Well, this writing workbook teaches you French numbers AND French number-related phrases. Phrases like, “how old are you,” “I am __ years old,” “My phone number is…” and so on. Definitely a very useful workbook to get once you’re done with the Alphabet worksheet above.

french numbers worksheet

5. 25+ French Love Phrases Workbook

You know what’s fun to learn?

Love words and phrases.

So, if you’re learning French because of someone you like, this is a good resource to have. Inside, you’ll get 25+ words and phrases like how to say I love you in French. Then, your job is to print out resource and practice writing the words on the spaces below. It’s that simple.

french worksheets love

6. 50+ French Conversational Phrases

What else is fun to learn?

Conversational phrases.

Phrases you will use in conversations with native speakers. And even though you’re learning and writing with these worksheets, you will remember them because you’ve practiced them writing them out. This collection of French worksheets teaches you 50+ phrases like… how to introduce yourself in French , talk about the weather, your plans, and much more.

french worksheets conversational

7. Top 100 French Words

You should also learn the most common words.

These words will give you a solid base of French and help you move forward. Again, just print out this French PDF workbook and practice writing them out.

100 french words worksheet

8. 50 Most Common French Adjectives

Here’s another useful vocabulary boost.

This French workbook teaches you the most common adjectives. 50 is plenty for a beginner. As usual, print it out and go to town writing in it.

french adjectives worksheet

Why Learn with French Worksheets & Workbooks?

The reasons are simple.

  • You get a chance to practice your French.
  • You remember French better through practice (filling out the worksheets).
  • You get to speak fluently later… because you’ve practiced.
  • You’ll never learn simply by “listening” or “reading about things.” You have to DO things. It’s like learning to dance without actually trying to dance — you simply won’t learn!

The fact is… you can read and listen to things all day long…

But, you will NEVER learn French…

And you will NEVER learn to use it freely and speak it freely like your very own language… if you don’t actually do work — practice writing and speaking.

Hence, worksheets give you a good opportunity to remember what you’ve learned and write things out. Doing this — using the words and writing them — will help you remember them better. So that later, you can freely use them while you’re speaking French.

– The Main Junkie

Mme R's French Resources

French resources for busy teachers

French worksheets

French worksheets are not the only way to teach, of course! However, students need written practice for verb conjugation and vocabulary. A well-structured activity packet will walk them through all of the skills they need to master. With solid examples, detailed instructions, and effective written activities, French worksheets can be a meaningful component of a solid French unit.

French worksheets for beginners:

Structured activities that increase in difficulty as students progress through the packet are really helpful for beginning French students. With explanations and directions in English, they can work on their own at home, too. This means less fear of not being able to understand.

French vocabulary packets:

French-clothing-worksheets

These French clothing activities are fun for beginners. Students love to talk about clothes, but their vocabulary is very limited, so they need a lot of structure. This pack has speaking activities and games, worksheets, and reading comprehension that are all geared towards students with very little exposure to French.

French verb packets:

Packets like this one for the verb aller teach the students how to conjugate, form complete sentences, form negative sentences, and answer questions. In addition, students learn how to use the futur proche which greatly expands their communication skills to talk about the upcoming weekend or even just what they’ll be doing after school.

This packet, just like all the other verb packets in this series have English notes and directions and a full-French version. They are perfect for review, and they can be used in Core and Immersion.

Teachers are loving the French verb bundle with avoir, être, faire, aller, and venir .

It includes the aller packet above plus four other common French verbs beginners need to know. All packets teach conjugation, negation, and using complete sentences. In addition, students will answer common questions, learn new vocabulary with a lot of images to support learning, and pick up common expressions or uses of these verbs along the way!

French worksheets for advancing beginners:

passe-compose-worksheets

The passé composé is a very important part of a lot of beginning French courses. These passé composé worksheets are filled with writing activities, games, speaking activities, exit tickets, and a lot more for the Core French and French immersion classroom. It includes a version with English explanations and directions as well as a full-french version for review or immersion classes.

French-direct-objects

My themed packs are really popular in both Core and Immersion for teaching grammar in a thematic context. Students can learn complex structures like direct and indirect object pronouns in a themed vocabulary unit like these French party vocabulary worksheets.

For intermediate and advanced students:

Students in the intermediate and advanced range of French still need that guided practice if they are to effectively learn complex structures. Far too often, I found that the resources I had explained things very quickly and never provided enough practice for my students. As a result, I had to do a lot of supplementing!

Because I didn’t have what I needed, I created my own units for all the grammar structures I taught. Common topics like le futur simple , le conditionnel , and le subjonctif became much easier with effective practice.

French-conditional-worksheets

Complex structures like si clauses can be so much fun! However, students need to master the structure before they can do the fun what if. .. type of activities that my kids have always loved! This French conditional packet is a great tool when teaching students the structures. Then, you’ll be free to do tons of creative speaking and writing prompts that are so much fun!

What do teachers have to say about my French vocabulary and verb packets?

Vilma N. says, “Another very thorough resource from Mme R. It has everything nicely laid out and makes it easy to teach the lesson in stages. I like all the different versions so I can use it for both my 1P1 class and my 1D1 class. Merci!”

Ruth T. says, “This was a tremendously helpful resource! I love your grammar resources.”

Shellie N. says, “My French 2 students struggled with avoir/etre + past participle conjugation, but after using parts of this resource yesterday for 80 min during block schedule, they told me they had fun and they really get it! For Passé Composé, that is a BIG WIN. I’m also planning to use the être or avoir sheet as a 20 question assessment. I can use this resource for many days without any prep on my part–whew!”

Erica L. says, “Wow! I am blown away by the depth of this product! Absolutely comprehensive! I’m replacing all my adjective resources with this packet. Absolutely worth every penny. Thanks so much! ”

Jordan M. says, “This has been a lifesaver in my class! I printed off the student booklets and we have been working through them together. No prep for me means I get to spend more time being present with my students.”

Sherilyn M. says, “We love Mme. R! This is the second unit we have bought. My son is in grade 7 but has some holes in his French education. This unit is nice to look at and it is easy to understand what they are asking him to do. Love that it includes verbs as well. Thank you! We will be back for more!”

Scott M. says, “Mme R has created another excellent quality product. I really like how this one even explains some of the cultural differences between eating out in France vs. the U. S. You will not be disappointed! ”

French Subject Pronouns – Exercises with solutions

french-subject-pronouns

Table of Contents

Je is the French version of I . For instance:

  • Je vais réussir: I will succeed

Tu corresponds to You.

You should only use tu when you speak with friends and family. Tu is an informal way of addressing people.

You can use vous when referring to people at work, or other formal contexts.

Il and elle are the equivalent to he and she . They can be used in the same way as in English.

Il and elle can also be translated to it . More on this later.

We can translate on with one , for instance:

  • On peut essayer d’être heureux: One can try to be happy.

However, it is very common to use on to refer to a group of people – nous :

  • On va y aller: We are going there.

Nous also means we . However, nous is the formal way of saying we .

You’ll see it a lot in formal contexts, not so much in films and series, nor in the everyday language.

Vous means you, it’s the plural version of you :

  • Vous êtes prêts?: Are you ready?

It should be noted that you can use vous to refer to an individual person. This is considered polite and can be used in formal contexts.

For instance if you are in a store in Paris:

  • Pourriez-vous m’aider? Could you help me?

Ils och elles

Ils and elles corresponds to they .

There are 2 different versions because of the use of gender.

If a group of people includes at least one men, we’ll use ils .

For instance:

  • Ils sont méchants: They are mean

If the group includes only women, we’ll use elles.

  • Elles sont méchantes

We can replace names with il and elle .

In this case, we are referring to a woman called Anna.

We will replace her name with elle.

It’s the same principle here.

However, now we are referring to a man – John.

We’ll replace the name John with il.

It’s very common to use vous instead of nous , and vice-versa, in the beginning of our language journey.

It’s a good idea to learn them by heart:

  • Vous: You (plural)

There is another way of choosing the right pronoun. The conjugated verb that comes after the pronoun will tell us which one we should use:

  • Nous avons un chien: We have a dog.
  • Vous avez un chien : You have a dog

We’ll use ils if the group includes at least one man, just like I mentioned in the beginning of this article 🙂

We’ll use elles if the group only includes women.

We can conclude that we are referring to 2 persons, moi (me) and mon ami (my friend)

It’s common to think that the correct answer should be ils/elles.

It would be weird and incorrect to say:

  • Me and my friend, they are nice.

The correct answer is nous . The translation of the sentence will be:

  • Me and my friend, we are nice.

You can also pick the pronoun based on the conjugated verb that comes after – avons.

Nous and avons are linked to each other.

It would be incorrect to write Ils sommes .

This is a common expression.

Tu vas bien means are you ok ? (The direct translation would be are you going well)

You need to be familiar with the conjugation of aller in the present tense to know the answer of this exercise.

  • Il/elle/on va
  • Nous allons
  • Ils/elles vont

You’ll probably ask yourself if you need to learn all the different verbs and their conjugations?

Not really, but you need to learn the most common verbs, and aller is definitely included in this category 🙂

Intermediate and advanced

We need to look at comprenons . What should precede comprenons?

It’s nous . I can show you why:

  • Je comprends: I understand
  • Tu comprends: You understand
  • Il/elle/on comprend: He/she/one understands
  • Nous comprenons : We undersstand
  • Vous comprenez: You understand
  • Ils/elles comprennent: They understand

Don’t feel discouraged if you feel overwhelmed by all the different verbs, we’ll practice a lot in this article :-).

This exercise gives us the same problem as the previous one. Aller (to go) is the infinitive of va .

We need to know what we should insert before va.

Va can be linked to:

Vas can only be linked to tu.

Vont can only be linked to Ils/elles.

And like I mentioned before, aller is a very common and useful verb. You should learn it by heart.

You can think of the famous song by Abba –  voulez-vous :-).

The infinitive of voulez is vouloir – to want.

Vouloir is another key verb to learn.

We need to look at me to figure out what we should insert.

Me is a reflexive pronoun.

Je can only be linked to me .

Here are the reflexive pronouns :

  • Il/elle/on se
  • Ils/elles se

We need to look at se lève .

You know by now that we can link il, elle and on with se lève .

It’s not possible to link se with tu .

Do you remember the reflexive pronouns?

We can actually use se for both il/elle and ils/elles.

However, the answer can’t be il/elle in this case.

  • Il/elle se connaît

The correct answers can be both Ils and Elles.

We don’t know, given the context, if the sentence is referring to a group of men or a group of women.

The solution to this exercise is avoir in the past tense . More precisely le passé compose.

Have you seen this verb before in le passé composé?

  • Il/elle/on a eu
  • Nous avons eu
  • Vous avez eu
  • Ils/elles ont eu

The answer can only be vous avez 🙂

This is another grammatical tense. We have put arriver in the future tense, more precisely le future simple.

Let’s look at the conjugation of arriver in le futur simple:

  • J’arriverai
  • Tu arriveras
  • Ils/elle/on arrivera
  • Nous arriverons
  • Vous arriverez
  • Ils/elles arriveront

You need to be familiar with the imperfect tense in order to solve this exercise.

Let’s see where it can fit in:-)

  • Il/elle/on avait
  • Nous avions
  • Ils/elles avaient

This is the conjugation of avoir in the imperfect tense. Avoir is a very important verb that is the foundation of other important tenses, for instance the pluperfect tense.

I mentioned earlier that we can use il/elle to refer to things.

The theory behind this is quite easy to understand.

In French, every noun (word) has a gender.

In this case, we are referring to a car (une voiture).

Une voiture is a feminine noun.

Therefore, we can replace une voiture with elle .

Let’s look at an example with a masculine noun:

  • Je n’aime pas mon ordinateur, il est lent : I don’t like my computer, it’s slow.

In this example, mon is a possessive adjective:

  • We’ll use mon for masculine nouns.
  • We’ll use ma for feminine nouns.

Are you still struggling to make sense of the subject pronouns? You are more than welcome to leave a comment.

I enjoy answering questions as it helps me to understand French from different perspectives.
