Are you thinking about seeking help because you’re unable to guide your child who is struggling in History, Geography and/or Social Studies?

Before working with us, many of our students were:

  • Discouraged about repeatedly getting low scores for Social Studies, History and/or Geography
  • Hardworking but just couldn’t figure out what was pulling down their grade
  • Coping well in Mathematics and the Sciences but struggling a great deal in the Humanities subjects
  • Eager to do the work to improve, but didn’t know how or where to start
  • Too busy for yet another long and draggy tuition class

Memorising and regurgitating facts alone no longer guarantees an A.

In fact, many students who come to us are like your teen:

GREAT at understanding and remembering the content, but still fail or barely pass their History, Social Studies or Geography exams.

Why? Two reasons:

1. INFO OVERLOAD

2. They haven’t mastered HOW TO APPLY what they learn.

It’s like being given a basket of exotic ingredients but having no idea how to put them together into a delicious meal.

And no, it’s NOT because your teen doesn’t have the talent for the humanities. Most certainly NOT because he/she is “weak”.

It’s simply because your child hasn’t been taught an effective revision system that allows him/her to effectively tackle all the exam questions without taking up too much time.

If your child is willing to do the work (which isn’t THAT much, by the way), we’re confident we can help.

Most parents won’t know what we’re about to tell you…

At the O levels, the national average distinction (A1/A2) rate for Combined Humanities hovers between 28% to 35% each year, as compared to 50+% for Math.

That’s why your child needs to spend practically every single day doing practices in order to get a decent grade for Math!

But in order for your child to get a distinction in the Humanities, he/she only needs to spend about 30-45 minutes PER WEEK doing practices within our proven online coaching system.

With our Humanities online coaching programmes, your teen gets a way better return on time investment, and much higher chances of OUTPERFORMING the competition.

There’s no reason why your child can’t be like one of our students below, come end of year:

noreen

How do our students jump 3 grades or more?

Students in our social studies, history and geography mojo online coaching programmes use the proven d.a.t.a. system..

Developed by our Founder Ms Karen Ang, it has helped our students achieve around 70% distinctions in less time since 2014, way before the pandemic:

For your child to start improving, he does a weekly bite-sized assignment to designed to help him master the exam skills and content needed in a logical manner

This takes only 30 to 45 minutes each week

Never get stuck. Your child can access support via a private Whatsapp chat group if he/she needs to clarify any questions

Attend our 1-hour LIVE small group online coaching sessions every week.

During the session, your coach will point out:

a) Easy-to-score areas that your child has missed out, improving his score by up to 5 marks (or MORE)

b) If your child does well: Show your child exactly why the answer scores high marks, so that he can replicate high-scoring answers for similar questions in future

Your child will get the chance to edit his answer, and

CORRECTIONS WILL ALWAYS BE CHECKED AND MARKED.

Over time, your child builds up a bank of his/her own model answers that can be pulled out for exam revision.

Your child’s coach will help to bridge gaps in his/her understanding of content or concepts.

This helps your child acquire deep understanding of concepts without sitting through draggy and passive lectures .

We point him to the necessary resources to bridge those gaps.

We’ll also show your child what to ignore, to save time and combat information overload / fatigue.

4. ACCELERATE

With the first three steps in place, we reinforce and repeat the process on a weekly basis.

This accelerates your child’s progress towards his/her ideal grades.

No waffling, no wasting time on long and draggy online or in-person classes.

So that your child has more time to put towards other important subjects as well.

Did we mention? Our Group Sizes are TINY so that your child SAVES TIME

Our groups have a maximum of 4 students each.

Most centres cram 8 to 20 students in a single class with a duration of 1.5 hours to 2 hours weekly.

Keeping our groups small allows us to keep our weekly coaching sessions to 1 hour, shaving off 50 percent of the time commitment on your child’s part.

Your child’s time is a precious resource.

We want to help your child maximise your Return on Investment (ROI).

When your child is able to…

Look at a question, and within seconds, know what to do to produce an answer that the Social Studies, History or Geography exam marker loves…

Speedily break down data and make accurate inferences on any Social Studies, History and Geography source that is thrown at him/her…

Complete the History / Social Studies / Geography exam comfortably within the time limit, writing LESS than other students but getting HIGHER scores…

Formulate well-thought responses to unexpected Source-based Questions (SBQ), Structured Essay Questions (SEQ), Structured Response Questions (SRQ), Data Response Questions (DRQs) or whatever Qs that cause other students to panic…

He/she will no longer feel anxious, lost, confused or discouraged about History, Geography and Social Studies, but tackle each exam with calm and confidence.

Of course, do take your time to decide.

But we need to let you know that keeping our intake small also means that our programmes fill up fast.

If you’re keen to find out about how any of our coaching programmes or online courses work, or which option will suit your child best, please feel free to book a complimentary 15-minute call with our Founder below.

There are good Humanities tutors and tuition centres out there. Why us?

There might be a chance that we’re NOT the right fit for you, of course!

If your teen is totally unable to attempt assignments on their own and need someone to sit with them as they do the work, then we’re not the right fit for you.

Home-based 1-1 tuition may be the best option in this case, and it takes up 1.5 to 2 hours a week, excluding homework.

It’s also the costliest of all the available options if you were to get a trained teacher.

What about centre-based group classes? They are usually 2 hours long per week with anywhere from 8 to 20 students in each group.

If your child loves big groups and extended contact time with his/her tutor, that would be a great choice.

But what if he/she already has a packed schedule and has a lot of learning to catch up on?

Can you imagine your child:

  • Spending up to 5 hours a week travelling, attending class, doing homework, and
  • Competing with many more students for the tutor’s attention?

Choose learnMOJO’s Social Studies, History and Geography Mojo

With our online small group coaching programme, your child shaves off at least 50% of the time investment required, while achieving even better results.

Your child will receive weekly coaching from an experienced ex-MOE teacher in a small group of maximum 4 students .

The forward-thinking parents we work with (like you) understand that it takes a great deal of time and effort to coach efficiently and effectively the way we do.

To help your child learn effectively in much less time, our coaches put in an incredible amount of time outside of the coaching sessions to plan, create additional practices, mark and offer personalised feedback on your child’s work, offer encouraging support, communicate with you and track your child’s progress.

  • Our tiny class sizes
  • Our coaches’ years of experience
  • The amount of time and effort they pour into guiding your child…

We could easily charge twice the fees of most centre-based programmes.

But our fees are not much different from most centres.

Secondary 1: $320 / 4 weeks

Secondary 2: $350 / 4 weeks

Secondary 3: $380 / 4 weeks

Secondary 4: $420 / 4 weeks

You’re billed on a monthly basis (first bill prorated according to which week of the month you start).

We’d love your child to be with us for the entire year, but you’re also free to learn with us for a month, two, or three.

No minimum lock-in periods; we’re not a bank issuing you a mortgage loan.

As parents ourselves, we believe that our students should be free to seek other options if our coaching doesn’t work out for them.

There are also no deposits at all.

We trust the parents and students who work with us.

We simply want your child to succeed.

It breaks our heart to hear a child say, ‘I am just not smart enough’, or ‘I’m just too slow/stupid’.

We believe every child has the ability to improve in Social Studies, Geography and History if they follow our system .

Our belief is not founded on wishful thinking. The results don’t lie.

Every year, about 70% of the students at learnMOJO get distinctions in Social Studies, History and Geography.

Most of them come to us with a fail or borderline pass grade.

What Parents and Students Say

“Mr Ho is able to point out to my child the reason behind why she was not able score full marks in attempted assignments. Additionally, Mr Ho is patient and very knowledgeable in the subject matter, History. I have no regrets in engaging LearnMOJO online coaching programme. The programme itself is very structured, methodical and effective. My daughter has never been able to tackle SEQ and SBQ questions until she is coached by Mr Ho. Give your kids the LearnMOJO advantage.” Charles Lim Celeste's dad 2020 O level student (Fail to B3 for Pure History) Coach: Mr Paul Ho
“Thank you for helping my child to improve in his grade. It’s not easy but Coach Ms Teo is always ready to tailor to his needs and guide him. Great support from admins team too. Always prompt communication via whatsapp. Thank you. Looking forward to continuing our partnership next year.” Esther Lim Caelen's mom 2020-2021 Lower Sec History Coach: Ms Teo Li Hoon
“The programme is very effective! Tutor Kavitha is able to engage with my son in just 30 min. Effectively taught him the key technique of answering questions, especially inference questions. Ms Kavitha is very encouraging and nice! Short and sweet lessons yet effective! I was sceptical at first, was worried that during the lesson, he might not pay attention, play with his devices secretly, not able to comprehend…so on… I was wrong! He looked forward to every lesson as he saw his work improving based on the mini tests at school. It also has given my son a chance to learn on his own pace and with his own effort. Unlike the conventional way of tuition, dragging his feet, travelling to and fro. Online coaching has saved us a lot of time.” Cheryl Kwek Tristan's mom 2020 Sec 2 History, C6 to A2 for History Coach: Ms Kavitha
“Mr Paul was able to teach Nadia the techniques and guide her to express herself much better in history structured and essay questions. As a result, her results improved tremendously from borderline pass in IP1 and 2 to an A in the year end IP3 exams. Along the way, Nadia’s interest in history also grew and she enjoyed her lessons with Mr Paul very much. Thank you Mr Paul for your patience and dedication to help Nadia build an interest in History and improve her grades.” Vicky Nadia's mom 2021 IP Yr 3 History Coach: Mr Paul Ho
“There is personal attention given to me allowing me to ask whatever questions I need. Ms Karen is also very motivating :). There isn’t much of a difference [between online coaching and in-person tuition] since Ms Karen will be there to answer the questions anyway. Saves time travelling for the student/teacher.” David L. 2020 O level student (B4 to A1 for Social Studies & History Elective) Coach: Ms Karen Ang
“What I found most helpful: personalised feedback, guided practices and targeted practices regarding weaknesses. It is a lot more convenient & efficient than physical lessons as quite a lot is accomplished in a single lesson.” Laura T. 2020 ‘O’ level student, A2 for Combined Humanities (Social Studies) Coach: Ms Charmaine Lappen
“The lessons allowed me to understand the different techniques and skills I needed for essays and source-based questions. They also allowed me to understand the history content much better in a deeper context. I would highly recommend joining the online classes.” Jaynia 2017-2019 student (E8 in Lower Sec to A1 in History for O levels 2019) Coach: Ms Karen Ang
“From ‘I hate History’ in Lower Sec to A1 in O levels…your coaching works for her and she saw improvement, hence she is willing.” Jaynia's mom

Who is the Social Studies, History and Geography Mojo online coaching programme for? And who is it NOT for?

If your child is willing to put in 30 minutes to 1 hour every week to do some extra guided practices, GAME ON!

We don’t care how badly he is failing right now. With the willingness to do the work, there’s no reason he won’t improve.

This programme is NOT for students who:

  • Do not complete existing school assignments
  • Are unwilling to do any extra practices
  • Expect us to spoonfeed them with answers
  • Want us to provide stacks and stacks of content notes that they may not even have the time to read

Do you offer free or paid trial for 1 lesson?

We don’t have a 1-lesson trial, as we understand that parents and students may need more than 1 lesson to determine if the programme is useful for them. Instead, we have a 30-day Guarantee with a prorated refund.

Try us out for 30 days. If your child doesn’t find the coaching helpful despite doing all the assignments, let us know and you can stop immediately.

We’ll give you a prorated refund of the fees for the remaining weeks of the month .

Just let us know at least 3 working days in advance.

What if I want to withdraw my child from your programme?

We’d love for your child to learn with us until she graduates secondary school, but ultimately you’re in control and can cancel at any time.

This ensures that we do our best and earn the privilege of having you as our client.

Details of our cancellation policy as follows.

Within the first 30 days:

You may stop without finishing out the current month. We’ll give you a prorated refund of the fees for the remaining weeks of the month .

After the first 30 days:

Finish out the current month, and you’re free to go. Let us know at least 7 days before the next invoice is issued. (Our invoices are issued 1st day of each month.)

What happens if my child cannot attend any class due to competition or other official school activities? Can he/she hop in another class on a different day?

As we tailor the the revision plan to each group, other classes may be working on different assignments from your child’s usual group. Hopping in to another class wouldn’t be the best use of your child’s time.

Instead, your child should (a) watch the recorded video replay of the missed session and (b) complete the weekly assignment.

His/her coach will mark the work before the next coaching session.

If needed, the coach will arrange for a separate 15 to 20 minute 1-to-1 review with your child.

In our experience, this proves to be better use of your child’s time.

CanViz: Stanford’s Historical Tuition Rates [2017-09-27] ¶

Turn-in instructions

Send an email to dun @ stanford . edu Subject line should be almost exactly like the following (spacing, case, etc.) except for your Sunet ID: padjo-2017 can-viz stanford-tuition-history lelandjr Take a photo or scan of your creation and attach it to the email

Background ¶

If you are reading this homework assignment, you are probably aware of, if not acutely aware of Stanford’s tuition schedule . But even as tuition rates are set and quantified – $16,329 per quarter for undergraduates, as of 2017-2018 – you also know that it doesn’t tell the whole story of cost and benefit. Financial aid packages, scholarships, and additional fees are all significant enough to make the tuition rate nearly incidental to the total cost.

That said, the tuition rate is something that we can measure every year. While the tuition rate for the current year may not be interesting by itself, what does it look like in comparison to the rates of past years and even decades?

Stanford’s Administration/Finances website has published a table of historical rates dating all the way back to 1920, when Stanford first began charging for $40 per quarter.

Here is a screenshot of that table:

Directions ¶

Using the numbers from the screenshot of the tuition table draw – i.e. with pen/pencil and paper – a chart representing that data.

That’s it. No other requirements, including what type of chart (e.g. bar, line, pie) or what best practices to be mindful of. Or, most importantly, how to deal with the incomplete and complicated nature of the data (see the Caveats section below).

So give it your best try but not much more than 15 minutes. Use a ruler or grid-paper if you want, but it doesn’t have to be razor precise (that’s what computers are for).

However, please don’t make something as abstract/inaccurate as this:

Don’t worry about all the other factors that you believe to be relevant in analyzing historical tuition rates. For this challenge, you can focus just on the simple numbers.

Note: There’s a reason I’ve provided only a screenshot of the data, as opposed to a webpage or a table. You’re supposed to do this by hand . Entering the data into a spreadsheet to make a chart is definitely the right idea in practice. Just not for this introductory challenge.

Hints and Caveats ¶

  • If you’ve taken an economics course, you may know the concept of “inflation”. That is definitely a real factor but don’t worry about it for this exercise.
  • Before the most recent decades, Stanford did not raise tuition every year. However, the provided tuition chart does not show all of the incremental increases. For example, it only has the tuition for 1950-51 and 1960-61 – $660 and $1005, respectively. It does not include the 1954-55 tuition hike to $750 .

I leave it to you to figure out how to deal with that gap (don’t spend your time searching the Daily Archives, unless you have time to waste).

This is the only CanViz challenge that will be hand-drawn, so the priority here isn’t to make something beautiful or even particularly insightful. In fact, as this is the first CanViz challenge, I don’t expect you to know anything about making data visualizations, so there’s not many requirements here except…try your best.

Even if you have made data charts before, maybe you’ve taken for granted the fundamental math that dictates the relationship between data and its physical representation. An ongoing theme of this course will be that computers are fundamentally dumber than you. Whatever bespoke process you use to convert the tuition rates to a semi-accurate and useful chart will be far more sophisticated (though necessarily better ) than any visualization program.

How much does a history degree cost?

The cost of attending college or university seems to consistently trend upwards. And while it’s true that you have to be prepared to make a financial commitment to your post-secondary education, there are ways that you can reduce the overall cost. Plan ahead. Compare the costs and benefits of earning an associate degree versus a bachelor’s degree. Explore scholarship opportunities and financial aid. Become informed about available tax credits and deductions. And of course, investigate tuition fees at both public and private institutions. To help you get started, here are the typical costs for a history degree:

19% above average compared to other degrees

24% above average compared to other degrees

23% above average compared to other degrees

What do history graduates earn?

History students make an average of $ 67,627 per year after graduation. This is 1% above average compared to other undergraduate degrees.

22 % of history graduates are underpaid (those who make less than $ 40,000 per year.) This rate is high compared to other degrees across the country.

Assignment: Social History of the Atlantic Slave Trade

Shannon Bontrager not only incorporated global contexts into his survey, but he also used non-traditional and digital pedagogical tools to engage his students.

Chinese Immigrants in America in the 19th Century: A Study Module

These materials, produced by Vincent A. Clark as a result of his work in the Bridging Cultures program, consist of an illustrated introduction, excerpts from four contemporaneous articles, an online quiz (not included in these materials), and an assignment for an e-mail discussion. The introduction describes not only the life of the immigrants in the United States but their economic and cultural background in China. The goal is to expand the students’ knowledge to include the China from which these immigrants came. Two of the articles oppose Chinese immigrants; two praise them. They are designed to let students see the varying perceptions of the immigrants, the arguments for and against Chinese immigration, and the complex class and ethnic dimensions of this controversy.

Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Extra Credit Assignment

As part of her work in the Bridging Cultures program, Cheryll Cody designed a course assignment using the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. It requires students to answer a series of questions by looking at the database’s extensive collection of maps and charts.

The US Becomes an Empire, Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries

As part of his work in the Bridging Cultures program, Carlos Contreras provided some classroom assignments and activities that challenge students to think "Atlantically" and "Pacifically" as they think broadly about American history. This set of discussion questions focuses on the expansion of the US as it becomes an imperial power and has students critically examine the US-Caribbean relationship, Hawaii and the Philippines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Discussion Questions on the Film Manifest Destiny

History and policy education program.

Oct. 2, 2015 -  Modeled on the National History Center's Congressional Briefings by Historians program, the History and Policy Education Program aims to help students appreciate the importance of bringing historical perspectives to contemporary policy conversations.  Designed to be adaptable to many courses and teaching styles, the Mock Policy Briefing initiative provides a guide for history educators to develop and host briefings about the historical dimensions of current policy questions.  Read more about the background of the initiative in the October issue of  Perspectives on History.

Sample Assignments from Globalized US History Courses

As part of her work in the Bridging Cultures program, Amy Forss employed wide-ranging techniques such as PechaKucha presentations, oral history research, and greater study of maps to engage her students in their globalized US history courses. She even had her students find historical recipes and try them out.

Revolutions, Independence and New Nations: The Great Transformation

As part of his work in the Bridging Cultures program, Carlos Contreras provided some classroom assignments and activities that challenge students to think "Atlantically" and "Pacifically" as they think broadly about American history. This set of discussion questions helps students consider the implications of revolution in the Atlantic world.

Discussion Questions on the Film Black in Latin America

As part of his work in the Bridging Cultures program, Carlos Contreras provided some classroom assignments and activities that challenge students to think "Atlantically" and "Pacifically" as they think broadly about American history. This set of readings and discussion questions helps students consider the complexities of the Transatlantic slave trade and the broader Atlantic world during the colonial era, particularly considering the film "Black in Latin America."

Films and Readings on the African Slave Trade and the Atlantic World

ChronoZoom Memory and History Project Rubric

Discovering american social history on the web.

Dan Kallgren developed several sample assignments for use in his undergraduate survey course "United States History Since the Civil War," in the spring of 2000. Assignments can be used inidividually or in series, as each is accompanied by suggested reading and primary sources.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire

One of Dan Kallgren's assignments. Students read a section from "Out of Many; A History of the American People" by John Mack Faragher, et al., to contextualize primary source documents about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. After analyzing the sources, the students write a short report.

The Anti-Saloon League

One of Dan Kallgren's assignments. Students analyze digital primary sources in order to contextualize and understand the motivation of the Anti-Saloon League members.

Mapping Suburbanization

One of Dan Kallgren's assignments. Using topographical maps from the University of New Hampshire, students explore how the landscape surrounding a 1950s New Hampshire city changed over time. Students are asked to consider how sociopolitical factors such as the Cold War might have affected the development of the United States.

World Civilizations: The Ancient Period to 500 CE

In David Smith's project, students use world history methods (Big Picture, Diffusion, Syncretism, Comparison, and Common Phenomena) to interpret secondary and primary materials. Primary material is handled through directed reading questions that focus on three classics: the Odyssey, the Ramayana and the Analects.

JFK's Executive Orders and the New Frontier

One of Dan Kallgren's assignments. Students analyze executive orders from President Kennedy to draw out themes and place them in the context of Kennedy's agenda.

United States History from the Civil War to the Present Syllabus

Sample Assignment: Charting Your Journey with ORBIS

Created by John Rosinbum as part of his Teaching with #DigHist series on AHA Today, This assignment asks students to craft a hypothetical journey using ORBIS, a digital humanities project at Stanford University that allows users to plot a route between sites in the Roman Empire and simulate the journey. After rationalizing the choices made when planning their trip, students use a comic strip or travel diary to recount the trials and tribulations of their journey. The assignment helps develop skills in writing narratives, real or imagined. In addition, it develops the historical skills of contextualization and causation by asking the students to ground their narratives in a place they have already learned about and then justify the steps in their journey. While designed for middle school students, the assignment and attached rubric could easily be adapted for students ranging from elementary school to entry-level undergraduate.

Sample Assignment: Comparing Spatial Depictions of the Roman World

Created by John Rosinbum as part of his Teaching with #DigHist series on AHA Today, this assignment requires students to analyze the depictions of the Roman world created in digital projects ORBIS and the Digital Atlas of Roman and Medieval Civilizations. Designed for high performing high school students and freshman/sophomore undergraduate students, the assignment pushes students to compare the two projects and gives them the opportunity to explore how purpose, argument and data shape a project.

Sample Assignment: Visualizing the Transatlantic Slave Trade with Voyages

Created by John Rosinbum as part of his Teaching with #DigHist series on AHA Today, this assignment offers students the opportunity to use their visual and/or technical skills to create a visualization of the transatlantic slave trade. Students will use the information provided by Voyages to create either a digital or an analog data visualization of the trade. In addition they will write a detailed guide explaining their process and defending their choices. This assignment asks them to think deeply about the process of visualizing history and personally involves them in the process of generating a better understanding of the past.

Sample Assignment: Tracking a Slave Ship with Voyages

Created by John Rosinbum as part of his Teaching with #DigHist series on AHA Today, asks students to investigate a specific slave vessel and contextualize its journeys within their broader knowledge of the trade and concurrent historical events/processes that might have affected it.

Teaching the Slave Trade with Voyages: The Transatlantic Slave Trade Database (AHA Today)

New perspectives on 19th-century america [assignment].

John Rosinbum uses American Panorama, a digital atlas created by the University of Richmond's Digital Scholarship Lab, to teach students about the economic, cultural, and territorial transformations that changed America during the 19th century. In this assignment, students must create their own visualization of changes in 19th-century America. Students must also develop a guide that defends their research choices in the creation of the visualization, explains how the visualization extends our current understanding of the period, and distinguishes their visualization from American Panorama.

Analyzing Visual Depictions of America's Expansion with American Panorama

John Rosinbum uses American Panorama, a digital atlas created by the University of Richmond's Digital Scholarship Lab, to teach students about the economic, cultural, and territorial transformations that changed America during the 19th century. One of the best ways to prepare for your future is by learning about the past. History lessons enlighten us regarding the historical events that shaped how society is today.

Events such as the First and Second World Wars, the American Revolution, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the Great Depression, and the Russian Revolution all affected the present state of the world in some way.

And registering for a history class will help you learn exactly how these events influenced the way you and I live today.

Unfortunately, since history lessons are limited to only a single hour in most schools, students decide to supplement their learning by choosing private history lessons.

Many students and pupils need a bit of extra help during their studies. According to recent survey statistics, up to one in every three students will receive private tuition at home during their academic studies.

And there are many different reasons why you or your child might want the help of a private tutor:

  • It might be to  improve their grades   in your History course
  • In preparation for high school or AP History prep
  • To get that little bit of  extra motivation  to  get on the right path of study
  • Or it might just be to improve their overall  academic achievements

A History Tutor Will Be Beneficial

There are many different reasons why a pupil may want to study History . Still, the complexity of historical events and the sociologic impact on our society might not be easy to understand. That is when tutoring services and home tutoring might help.

From the Roman Empire’s influence on early Medieval England society to the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Victorian society, no one said that studying history was any easier than any other subject.

It is normal for children and students lagging behind the rest of the history class to benefit from the extra one-on-one attention a private tutor can give them.

History tuition might be especially beneficial.  On the one hand, it will surely be easier for children receiving extra education on specific history subjects or assignments to understand them better and analyze them from different angles. But the study skills and abilities necessary to study, analyze, and critique historical, political, or religious past events will also come in handy in a wide range of subjects.

Understanding the complexity of a historical situation and reading through and compiling historical research requires expertise. And drafting a concise summary of it is a skill that will help solve maths problems, write an English essay, or greatly facilitate any social studies.

How finding history lessons near you could be easy.

Why You Should Study History

At school, history would always get an extreme reaction; some students loved it while others despised it. This is because many believe that learning about the past is simply a waste of time.

However, there is another prevalent argument: it is only by understanding the failures and successes of the past that we can reshape a better future.

No matter your opinion, one thing is for sure, a degree in history opens up multiple avenues in the professional world.

Whether you want to be a teacher, an archeologist, an archivist, a lawyer, an anthropologist, or even a politician, a master’s in history will fast-track your career goals.

Here are certain things that learning history helps us with;

Better Understanding Of The World

You cannot plan for the future without a framework, and that structure only comes by understanding how things work.

History provides insight into how governments, society, and technology worked back in the day, enabling us to be better in the modern world.

It also helps us determine how to approach the future better since it allows us to learn from our past triumphs and failures as a society.

Understanding Ourselves

To better understand who we are, we must develop a more profound sense of self. A large portion of that is learning how you contribute to your country or global community.

History provides insight into how your city, nation, or community turned into what it is today. It tells you the origins of your ancestors and the role they played in society.

And most important of all, it provides you the ability to find and appreciate the legacies you might have inherited from them.

Understanding Others

History is not only an essential introduction to your ethnic heritage, ancestry, and country. It is also a unique tool that explains the difference between people.

Regional, national, and global history books help us understand the effects of different cultures on our own.

Furthermore, it also encourages us to form a better appreciation of the multicultural influences inside our communities as well.

That is why everyone must study immigrant history, African-American history , and so forth, regardless of their cultural background.

History tutors might not be in the same demand as math or physics tutors, which will make it even harder to know what price you should pay for an hourly lesson. This Superprof article outlines where to look for a History teacher and what price you should pay them.

How do you choose the right private tutor?

What Kind Of History Tutor You Need

There are many different fields in History  (Ancient History, Modern History, American history, Latin History or European History, and African History and African American History). So what kind of tutors should you be looking for will depend on various factors:

  • Your location
  • Your academic level
  • The amount of help you need
  • Your academic goals
  • Your budget

There are a few rules you might want to follow when choosing a History private teacher or tutor.

  • First, the more senior and experienced your tutor will be, the more qualified AND expensive they will be. For example, if your tutor holds a doctoral degree in history or is a university lecturer. In that case, you will more likely pay a much higher rate than you would for an undergraduate in the same subject. A certified teacher is also more likely to help you more efficiently, customize, personalize, and individualize your homework help or academic tutoring.
  • Tutors, and especially history tutors , usually have different specialties. For example, you will often see tutors focusing on high school or AP exam preparation. However, you can also hire a tutor that focuses on helping students overcome their overall academic difficulties. Furthermore, they also provide students with the confidence they need to ace their history exams.

You can also find tutors who are professionals in dealing with the same problem your child is facing.

The more specific your tuition needs are, the more expensive your private tuition should be. So, for example, if you’re looking for a private teacher to help with general English history, you won’t be paying as much as if you hired someone to help you with  anthropology or social and economic history.

  • Do consider the length of your tuition before hiring a tutor. One semester or a whole year? If you need or several sessions before you are updated with the curriculum. In that case, you should consider hiring a tutor with a lower hourly rate. However, you may be able to find a tutor that would be ready to give you a discount if you booked many sessions at once.

Whatever tutor you end up choosing, ensure that their strategies and coaching are tailored to match your strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, make sure that their curriculum is focused on your or your child’s confidence and success.

A home tutor and a tutor online should offer the same level of one-on-one tutoring even though the way you will be taught will slightly differ.

Make Sure That The Tuition Fits Your Budget

The most annoying thing would be to start taking private History lessons and see an improvement in your academic results. But, realize that you will not be able to afford any more sessions after a few weeks because you are over budget.

If you want to avoid this, it is recommended to have an honest discussion with your tutor to make them aware of your budget and financial situation. Then, they might be able to make it work by focusing on key elements of your history curriculum or concentrating on specific points that you may struggle with to make the most out of each lesson.

Usually, History tutors will charge you by the hour. Still, as each tutor-student situation is different, you might get a discount if you pay for a block of several lessons at once. You can also make differed payments agreement with your tutor.

An hour of History private less will usually cost you anywhere  between $20 to $40  depending on your level and the experience and expertise of the tutor.

If you are in New York, you should expect to pay on the upper side of this bracket. However, the average hourly History home tuition in  Seattle runs around $20 . If you live in  Atlanta, you will pay approximately $15  for one hour of one-on-one History class.

However, there are always ways to bring down the cost of private tuition, luckily for those on a tight budget but need some extra-scholar help with homework or exam prep.

How To Save Money On Tuition?

There are many different ways you may be able to  save a few pounds on your tuition  classes:

  • Take some online tutoring rather than in-person one-to-one class
  • Organize small group tuition with some other students that may need help studying history;
  • You could always ask your tutor for a  discount .

Switching To Online Lessons

If a tutor does not have to travel to your home, they will save both money and time and be able to take more lessons than if they had to commute. This will often result in your instructor offering you a discount on your private tutoring if you choose to take online classes. An online tutor will also be able to offer much more flexible scheduling.

With whiteboard software, document sharing application, and virtual exercises , you could have the same quality tuition and be hundreds of miles away from your tutor.

Online tutoring is particularly beneficial if you live in remote areas or in big cities where commutes can be an enormous burden due to congestions and overused public transports.

Choose A Group Tuition Format

If you are looking to save a few dollars and do not mind sharing a tutor with a few other students, opting for a group tuition classroom might be what you need.  The costs of the teacher will often be the same or slightly higher, but you will share the burden of the price with two or three other students.

This makes private tuition much more financially attractive. Furthermore, you can take many more lessons than you would have if you had chosen to follow one-to-one private classes.

If you know other students in your class or in your school that may benefit from having such group tuition, it should not be too hard to convince them of the benefits of joining you.

Asking For A Discount

Ask your tutor if they would be willing to give you a discount so you can afford to keep taking lessons with them for as long as necessary without seeing your bank account going in the red. Communicating with your tutor is essential to make sure that they will be able to teach you in a way that will result in better academic achievement.

How Much You Should Pay Your History Tutor Per Hour

The price to pay for a history tutor depends on their skill level and experience. For example, a tutor with elementary teaching experience will be much cheaper than one who tutors college students.

Other factors that dictate their fee include their education level, expertise, and the difficulty of the subject. The location and timing also affect the rates of tutors.

Online tutoring services usually charge specific hourly or monthly fees for classes. In contrast, private tutors might charge extra fees for other factors and travel time.

Hence, the prices for history tutors vary depending on your child’s requirements and the type of tutoring they receive.

Here are the most common types of tutoring available for you and a breakdown of how much your tutor will generally charge:

Private Tutor

Private tutors typically provide either in-person or online classes. Often, they are already working as professors, certified teachers, or professionals in their particular subject area.

However, some may even be in the middle of their studies, as graduate students, teaching assistants, or even high school students.

For a private tutoring session from a teaching assistant or student , you might pay around $25 per hour. In contrast, you could end up paying roughly $56 or more per hour for experienced teachers or professors.

Private tutoring costs can also differ depending on your location. For example, private history tutors usually are more expensive in large cities where the living costs are higher.

If you or your child has special needs, then it is likely that you will have to pay more since the tutor will adjust their lesson plans according to your requirements.

Most private tutors also charge extra or provide discounts depending on certain conditions. For example, this could be regarding remote

They might also charge a travel fee if they have to travel long distances to your house for their lessons. This fee might come in the form of an hourly stipend or a set rate.

Furthermore, private tutors might provide discounts on bulk lessons if you pay upfront or subscribe to a set number of hours.

Furthermore, private tutors might also take cancellation fees for forgotten or missed classes. However, many of these arrangements usually do not involve contractual conditions.

This highlights the importance of laying ground rules and working out the exact charges before committing to anything.

Tutoring Centers

You can find tutoring centers all over your city, most often in the form of private service. Some of the services found in America include the Huntington Learning Center and Sylvan Learning Center.

Some even partner with community centers and libraries to reach a broader customer base. These types of learning centers provide tutoring for ongoing academic needs as well as last-minute questions.

In most cases, students enrolled in grade school might get free access to tutoring at their local centers. This helps them get extra credit in class for attending a tutoring session.

Unfortunately, institutes such as the Sylvan Learning center are more expensive than most private tutors and online tutoring services.

Typically, a tutoring session at Sylvan costs around $49 per hour, which is quite a steep value to pay when you add it to school fees.

In most cases, these private institutes also charge additional money for material or books. However, some of them also provide trial sessions at somewhat reduced rates; whereas, others offer a money-back guarantee if your child or you cannot see improvement.

Also, these sessions aren’t usually one-on-one; most tutoring centers give lessons on a small group basis consisting of two to four students per hour.

Therefore, you or your child might not get that intimate learning environment that you will receive with a private tutor.

Tutoring Services

While a private tutor’s cost differs depending on their experience level, most tutoring services have set prices that don’t alter.

Almost every service, including Superprof, provides transparent pricing. This enables them to tell potential customers exactly what they would have to pay before signing up with a tutor.

Also, tutoring companies may charge sign-up fees, whereas private tutors will only charge an hourly rate.

Furthermore, online tutoring agencies do not need a long-term contract; however, you might be locked into a monthly agreement if you plan on choosing a discounted monthly plan.

Moreover, these services significantly vary in pricing. As a matter of fact, tutors at these platforms typically charge anywhere between $10 - $100 per hour.

Every platform has different criteria for hiring a tutor—some charge according to their experience and skills.

If you want to eliminate the guesswork, choose tutoring services such as Superprof that provide transparent prices for every tutor according to their skills and expertise.

Check the different types of history lessons here.

Various Payment Options

Online tutoring platforms and learning centers prefer to be paid through bank transfer, credit card, or debit card.

Conversely, if you are contemplating hiring a private tutor, you also have the option to pay them through money order, check, or cash.

Nevertheless, the timeline of payment is the first thing you should discuss. Moreover, always ask for yearly packages and bulk lessons; they can help you save money.

Another vital thing to find out is if there are any additional fees and when they will be charged to your account.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to ask all these questions in your introductory meeting. If you have any questions regarding your tutoring costs, feel free to ask your tutor for clarification to avoid any overcharging.

Tutoring services and learning centers usually have a system in place for billing and payments. As a result, it is relatively easier to contact these companies

In contrast, if you find a private tutor from Craigslist and they disappear after asking for advance payment, you will have a tough time tracking them down.

Choosing a verified tutoring platform – like Superprof –  provides security in the exchange of information and money.

In addition, many companies offer convenient billing platforms and visibly state all their service terms and conditions. This helps when you want to change or cancel your tutoring plan.

Whereas, with a private tutor, you would have to negotiate all of these details yourself.

When you are looking at how much you should pay for a History teacher, there will be a lot of variables that you should account for:

  • How many sessions do you need?
  • What are you looking to get out of the tuition?
  • Would online or remote private tutoring work for you?
  • Or would you prefer one-on-one tuition?
  • Would you consider private group lessons, and do you know anyone who might want to join you?

You should also consider if you would be willing to pay an experienced teacher more as they might be able to help in a shorter amount of time, focusing on your weakness and giving you the necessary confidence to go on on your own.

If you are looking online, you will see thousands, if not more, private tutoring companies, private teachers, and other organizations that may be able to help.

Student progress can improve with greater attention from the tutor

But to make it all simpler, Superprof has created an easy-to-use platform. There are thousands of qualified history teachers ready to help you all around the States. If you are looking for the best tutors around, you should head there for instruction in most subjects (math, calculus, chemistry, algebra, geometry, biology, and more).

Many of them will offer you the option to take online lessons, and you can also read comments and reviews left by previous students and check if they would be a good fit for you.

history tuition

Our history tutors are trained to provide IP, IB, O-Level and A-Level History Tuition Singapore

History tutors.

History is a popular subject amongst students amongst the humanities. This imparts information about significant past international events as well as regional events, allowing our younger generation to understand how different factors contributed to events occurring as well as the implications behind actions. A-Levels History tests are hard to tackle however. This is because exam questions tested on the inference and critical thinking skills of students on case studies at different levels, while asking students to seek further review of the material they learned from the textbook. Students must demonstrate a depth of historical understanding and demonstrate the ability to clearly and effectively interpret the sources.

Compulsory Subject

Every student in Singapore must study history in lower secondary, and later choose between pure, combined history and geography in upper secondary.

Lessons from History

History classes help students link what they know about the past to real-life events of the present day.

Learning Purpose

The bigger picture about history revolves around understanding why and how historical events took place over memorising key events and dates.

Importance of History

Studying humanities at an early stage allows your child to make meaningful comparisons between present and past, to understand why society is shaped in certain ways and to gain wider perspectives on other cultures. All of this works together to help your child grow into a potential healthy, discerning, inquisitive, compassionate and intelligent person.

As history is very important for the overall development of the aptitude and even national identity of your child, great care must be taken to ensure that they are in touch with the subject and are doing well.

History allows us to understand and learn from past experience and failures of individuals, and to find out how to make our lives better in the future. It will be a serious mistake for anyone to ignore history, in particular repeating past mistakes that could mean losing significant learning opportunities for posterity. Learning humanities at an earlier age helps students draw parallels between present and past circumstances, understand why society is structured in some ways, and gain more perspectives on different societies. These are all important events that help your kids get prepared for the future and not take things for granted.

Benefits of History Tuition

History is not a simple subject in the field of humanities generally. This requires a deep understanding of the different countries ‘ culture and history. Every recorded information has the cause of the event influenced by a factor. It may be made up of political powers, greed and ambition, several events happening at various times and locations. Therefore, one needs to have a good grasp and deep understanding of what they are learning. Hiring a private tutor to direct him through his History topics will give him a deeper understanding of the topic. A good tutor knows how to engage your child in learning history, including teaching clear historical principles, making mind maps, sharing interesting historical stories to inspire learning, etc. With a good history teacher, your child has the higher chance of doing their exam well.

  • Direct individual engagement: A professional private tutor who is freely available to assist and answer any questions
  • New perspective to learning history: A private tutor may give a student a simple, more successful way to prepare for examinations
  • Bridge knowledge gaps: Home research fills the gap created by a rapidly paced classroom environment
  • Improve academic performance: A dedicated instructor is available to mentor students and imparts special research strategies equals performance improvement
  • Sustain subject interest: Private tutors keep the minds of students focused particularly during long holidays when students tend to play hard and forget everything that they have learned.

The Challenges of Learning History

History certainly isn’t an easy subject for humanities. Once you’ve completed Junior College (JC), the quality that history students expect will become much higher. Firstly, they must get acquainted with the subject quickly. Second, they have to comprehend important historical issues. And thirdly, they need to know how to cite sources and construct logical arguments. The real hurdle comes from being able to memorise large quantities of historical facts and figures; having a clear understanding of the complexities of historical topics in different periods and societies; and possessing the writing skills required to deliver well-constructed essays.

  • Do they find content-heavy texts of the past that they have to read?
  • Do they find it difficult to recall the important dates and incidents that affect crucial points of time?
  • Is the amount of work to be done overwhelming for them?

Tackling History Strategically

A private history teacher will be a tremendously valuable benefit for your child with all of these to deal with. Only imagine what happens if they have to go on this trip by themselves. Thankfully, a good history teacher can teach your child effectively how to analyse data sources, construct mindmaps, build proper history essays, and much more. This alone will significantly improve the history grades of your kids, regain their faith and prepare the ground for tomorrow’s light.

Colorado students receive first ever cornhole college scholarships: "We were shocked"

By Olivia Young

February 19, 2024 / 4:48 PM MST / CBS Colorado

After turning a hobby into a scholarship, two Colorado teens are taking a toss at collegiate cornhole.

Jaxson Remmick and Gavin Hamann never thought they'd be making cornhole history.

"We were shocked that we even got this opportunity to take something we were doing for fun as like, a sport to play in college," said Hamann.

corn-hole-scholarship-5pkg-frame-780.jpg

The pair met while playing in a local bar and restaurant's cornhole tournament.

"We became friends because of cornhole," said Remmick.

They soon discovered a passion for the game and a skill for playing together.

"It's just very straightforward but there's also a lot to it. A lot of strategy," said Hamann as he prepared to toss a cornhole beanbag, "I get a comfortable grip and then I throw and do a little flip."

Remmick and Hamann won back-to-back American Cornhole League National High School Championships, along with two other Thunder Ridge High School students.

"We've kinda like, made a name for ourselves," said Remmick.

It got them noticed by South Carolina's Winthrop University, which flew them out to play a game, and make them an offer they couldn't refuse: two first-of-their-kind scholarships to play on the university's newly created cornhole team.

"We just kinda fell in love with it from there and we're both excited to take this opportunity and kinda pave the path for this to become a college sport," said Hamann.

The pair committed to Winthrop on National Signing Day. Their scholarships will cover about 60% of the cost to attend.

Now they're counting down the days, and keeping their skills sharp.

"We're gonna go in August," said Hamann.

The boys won't just be cornhole partners at Winthrop; they'll also be roommates. And they're hoping their friendship will take them all the way to the National College Cornhole Championships.

Winthrop University says the cornhole team will have eight members and no other scholarships have been awarded yet.

  • Penn State takes down No. 12 Illinois, LSU beats Kentucky at the buzzer in wild Wednesday

history tuition assignments

Second-half comebacks and an incredible sequence finishing with a buzzer-beating lay-in headlined a wild Wednesday in men's hoops. Here's what you need to know.

Fans at Rec Hall storm the court as Penn State rallies down 14 in second half

In the final 15 minutes of regulation, the Penn State Nittany Lions erased a 14-point deficit and beat No. 12 Illinois by just one free throw down the stretch, 90-89 .

It was Jameel Brown and Zach Hicks who wrestled the Nittany Lions from the double-digit hole, each contributing 11 second-half points. Coming off the bench, Brown found his groove in the nick of time, sinking a trio of crucial threes and three steals to steer momentum in Penn State's direction — his last robbery with :30 on the clock set up a Puff Johnson layup that brought the Nittany Lions within two (89-87).

📊 FINAL STATS: How Penn State pulled off the comeback

On the next possession, Illinois' Coleman Hawkins failed to convert both of his free throws, then he fouled Hicks on his way up for three, painting the perfect comeback picture for Penn State. Roars from the white-out crowd rumbled as Hicks drained each of his three foul shots for a one-point advantage with three seconds left. What happens next, well... You can see the scenes in the Tweet below:

THE COURT STORMS KEEP COMING ⛈️ @PennStateMBB (via @CBBonFOX ) pic.twitter.com/R0pgwV5WDG — NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessMBB) February 22, 2024

Nick Kern was Penn State's most prolific shooter, finishing with a team-high 22 points. Hicks was a driver in Penn State's second-half comeback, finishing the game with 13 points and eight boards.

Despite the loss, Illinois dominated the offensive and defensive glass, grabbing 49 total rebounds to Penn State's 25. Fifth-year guard Terrence Shannon Jr. put up a career-high 35 points — shooting 10-18 from the field — and a season-best 11 boards to keep the Fighting Illini in the game. Illinois trailed by nine points early in the game, but went into halftime up 48-41. Critical turnovers and missed shots decided the game.

This marks Penn State's second ranked win this season. The Nittany Lions took down then-No. 11 Wisconsin in mid-January, 87-83, and are now 13-14 on the season (7-9 Big Ten). A middle-dweller in Big Ten standings this year, Penn State can use this Quad 1 win to garner some momentum just three weeks before the conference tournament. As for Illinois (19-7)... Wisconsin and Purdue loom in the next two weeks, as the Illini must prove where they stack up.

Wild sequence at the end of LSU vs. Kentucky ends with an incredible buzzer beater

What started as Rob Dillingham doing what Rob Dillingham does — sinking a clutch jumper to seal what looked like a Kentucky win, ended with an incredible Tyrell Ward lay-in to send the Wildcats home with a 75-74 loss. Watch the sequence below:

WHAT. A. SEQUENCE. 😱 UNBELIEVEABLE SCENES IN BATON ROUGE 🤯 pic.twitter.com/bgeB9Inrzc — NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessMBB) February 22, 2024

With the win LSU improves to 14-12 on the year, inching closer and closer to the NCAA tournament bubble, while Kentucky falls to 18-8 and 8-5 in SEC play, tied for fifth with Florida in the conference.
