What are the key math skills to be taught?

Number Sense : This is the ability of the child to count accurately both forward and backward.

Child arranging numbers

Representation : Making mathematical ideas “real” by using words, pictures, symbols, and objects (like blocks).

addition of apple

Spatial sense: This is about introducing the ideas of shape, size, space, position, direction and movement to the child.

Different shapes

Patterns: This is all about—numbers, shapes, images—that repeat in a logical manner. Patterns help children to learn to make predictions, to understand what comes next, to make logical connections, and to use reasoning skills to figure out the pattern.   Addition and subtraction: Addition is the "putting together" of two groups of objects and finding out the total objects. Subtraction tells "how many are left" or "how many more or less”.

Measurement: This will help a child to understand which is taller or shorter, bigger or smaller, near and far etc.

Size of apples

Estimation: This is the ability to make a good guess whether a number is greater than or lesser than or to find out the number which lies between two numbers.

Problem-solving: The ability to think through a problem, to recognize there is more than one path to the answer.

Some fun and cool first-grade math games

Shape sorter.

Encourage your child to play with shape-sorters. Talk to your child about each shape – ask them to count the sides and describe the colours and shapes. Make your own shapes by cutting large shapes out of coloured construction paper. Ask your child to “hop on the circle” or “jump on the red shape or pick up the square elements.”

Count and sort

Gather together a basket of small toys, shells, pebbles or stones. Count them with your child. Ask your child to point at the numbers. Sort them based on size and colour.

Read and sing your numbers

Sing songs that rhyme, repeat, or have numbers in them. Teach those songs to your child those which reinforce patterns.

Count everything

Encourage your child to practise counting in their everyday activities. Those activities can be like ‘How many mangoes are in the basket?’ Count the food items in the bowl during snack and at meals. Ask your child to show numbers with her fingers. Ask your child some questions like: "How old are you? How many cookies did you eat?"

Measure everything

Collect empty jars of various sizes and shapes and let your child explore and compare how much they hold by pouring water from one jar to another. Use a growth chart to mark your child's height. Count how many steps it takes from one end to another in your room.

Classify during clean up

Classify the items during clean up after playing. Put all the blocks that are the same shape in the same box. This is also a good time to help your child to know the correct usage of spatial vocabulary, such as "next to," "inside of," or "on top of” etc.,

Telling the time

Make your kiddo activities and puzzles based on learning time so that they can grasp the concept faster.

Provide blocks and building objects

Standard wooden blocks and Legos encourage children to build structures, learn about and combine shapes, compare sizes, and count. Playing with clay, sand, and water help children develop the foundations of measurement concepts and patterns.

20+ creative alternative homework ideas for teachers

homework activities for class 1

When giving homework, it must always be based on learning goals your students have to reach, just like in your lessons. But it’s sad to see that lots of teachers are using homework as extra lesson time. Of course, as a teacher, you’re on a clock. But that doesn’t mean your students have to suffer from it and keep working on those boring textbooks and worksheets at home.

Consider goals like attitudes, real-life experiences, and practice, physical exercise, social encounters, creative solutions, and philanthropy as crucial as your lesson goals. These are things students don’t just pick up in your classroom. These are things they pick up in life.

In this blog post, I’ll give you some innovative homework ideas that will engage your students more. These alternatives to traditional homework will thereby also teach your students new things that can’t be taught in the classroom. You will find a variety of homework ideas: online and offline.

I will mention homework alternatives for primary school and high school. Some of these ideas can be changed a little bit, so they are the perfect fit for the right audience.

20 Creative homework ideas

You can divide homework tasks into the following themes or categories:

  • Crafts & arts
  • Outdoor activities & outings
  • Games and activities
  • Physical activities

💡 Good to know : all the ready-to-use homework activities are created with BookWidgets . You can easily create activities like these yourself or duplicate an activity below for free, edit it if needed, and share it with your students. You can do so in the examples separately, or you can find all the homework examples in the BookWidgets Blog group folder .

Still looking for more inspiration? Check out the blog on short films and lesson activities that spice up your Google Classroom . Tip: even if you don’t use Google Classroom, there is a lot of inspiration back here.

Above you have read single assignments. But, you also have the option to involve your homework in a project. Find out more here .

So, as I mentioned earlier, there are many fun alternatives to traditional homework. Now it’s up to you to apply this in the classroom as well. In this folder , you will find all the examples you have come across.

Which idea do you or perhaps your students like the most? Let us know on Twitter . Of course, there are many more alternatives. If you have other ideas, you are always welcome to share it with other teachers in our Facebook group .

Here’s what’s included in our leap year worksheets bundle:

Fill in the missing leap years.

Fill in the Missing Leap Years activity sheet

In the first activity, invite students to use skip counting to fill in the missing leap years. Which carrot represents 2024? For an extra challenge, ask students to keep going until they reach a new century!

The 2024 Leap Year and Me

The 2024 Leap Year and Me activity sheet

The second activity asks students to think about the leap year in terms of their own life and achievements. After marking their age on the leap year timeline, they will think about how old they were for the last leap year and what they can do now that they couldn’t then. They will also think ahead to the next leap year. What would they like to be able to do in 2028 that they can’t do now?

Download the Activities

What is a leap year?

2024 is a leap year, which means we have an extra day on February 29. Leap years happen every four years. We have leap years because the length of our calendar year (365 days) is not the exact same as the time it takes the Earth to orbit the sun (365.25 days). Leap years help our calendar stay in sync with the seasons.

Where can my students learn more about the leap year?

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of great children’s books about the leap year. We do recommend this video from Mystery Science that explains the phenomenon in a kid-friendly way.

We’d love to hear about how you and your students are observing the leap year! Email us at [email protected] with your ideas.

Flipping the classroom

Traditionally, instructors have used class time to introduce new content via lecture, and then left students to practice and apply that content by themselves in homework exercises. A flipped classroom model “flips” this use of class time.

In a flipped model, instructors typically introduce new content through pre-recorded lectures (using technology such as Panopto ) and/or assigned reading. This homework prepares students to come to class ready to engage in activities that promote higher-order thinking, such as analyzing or synthesizing information through discussion, hands-on work, and collaboration – activities which have been shown to increase students’ learning and academic performance.

flipped classroom diagram

Allowing students to engage new ideas asynchronously has a lot of benefits. Shifting your lecture from an in-person lecture to a video lets students watch (and rewatch) the information at any time, pausing when they need to. This benefits all learners, but is especially helpful for learners who are slow notetakers or for whom English is an additional language. This also frees up in-class time for deeper dives into the content – students are then in a better position to ask questions, work together, and wrestle with complex concepts.

How to flip your class

Step 1: identify the information students will need to learn and to participate in class.

Flipping a class begins with your learning outcomes . What key concepts do you want students to be able to know and what skills do you want them to be able to demonstrate as a result of taking your class? Once you have these in mind, determine what information or preparation students will need before coming to class so that they can work on applying the concept or skill while in class.

Step 2: Develop resources and homework assignments that introduce key concepts and prepare students to participate in class

Once you’ve identified what information students will need before coming to class, determine what resource(s) would best give students this foundational knowledge (e.g., video lectures, assigned readings, animations, diagrams, etc.). Create or find these resources and share them in your course’s Canvas site. To ensure that students come to class ready to participate, you might also ask them to complete simple assignments that allow students to check their comprehension (e.g., practice quizzes, short reflections).

Step 3: Develop in-class activities that ask students to apply concepts introduced in the homework

Now that you’ve shifted the introduction of new content to pre-class homework, you can focus your class time on digging deeper and helping students apply concepts. Think about what sorts of activities would help students deepen their understanding of the material. Consider asking students to work together on a problem or set of problems, apply a concept to a scenario, or connect a concept to their own experiences. Learn more about active learning strategies .

A blurry motion shot of a woman in a pink T-shirt, pedalling on a stationary bike in a spin class.

My first time in a spin class: ‘I’m unable to escape. My feet are locked to the bike’

In her fortnightly review of fitness and wellbeing activities, comedian Jennifer Wong endures two wheels, 45 minutes and the sounds of 50 Cent

  • Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

A spin class combines three seemingly unrelated things – cycling, nightclubs and affirmations – to offer a cardio workout in the dark with loud music and words of encouragement (also loud).

I learn this one Wednesday lunchtime at a Cyclebar studio in Sydney. Cyclebar is the largest indoor cycling franchise in the world, and the feelgood vibes began immediately with the uptown funk of Mark Ronson playing in the locker area. Shannon, a cheerful team member, fits me with black, futuristic shoes. They have a dial on the side to tighten the fit and the soles are designed to lock to your bike’s pedals. Thinking about the obsolescence of shoelaces, I clip-clop my way to the spin studio and choose a bike at the front.

Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning

That’s where I meet Hannah, a lawyer and cycle instructor who has been spinning for almost seven years. When she finds out it’s my first time at spin cycle, she is delighted. “I promise you’ll want to come back!”

Today’s class is a “classic ride”: 45 minutes of interval training to 12 tracks of rap, pop and even Disney. Some classes have a music theme, which means you can do your entire low-impact and high-intensity workout to, say, the Spice Girls, or Rihanna or the Ministry of Sound CD from the 2000s.

‘Thinking about the obsolescence of shoelaces, I clip-clop my way to the spin studio and choose a bike at the front.’

Our session begins with 50 Cent’s In da Club pounding through the speakers. We start pedalling, and between 50 Cent announcing “It’s your birthday!” Hannah explains a few basics: the RPM displayed on our personal screens is how quickly our legs are moving, the dial on our bike allows us to increase resistance by spinning it to the right, and interval training means there are moments for recovery.

“Lift your chest!” says Hannah, her voice rising to compete with the music. “Breathe! It’s your chance to disconnect from whatever is going on outside those walls!”

Everyone cycles with seeming ease. I, meanwhile, trudge one leg after another with great effort, thinking only of Hannah’s promise of “recovery” because I am already experiencing quite a lot of discomfort. There’s no other way to put this: being on the bike hurts my bottom.

“Can you hit 100 RPM?” asks Hannah. “Yeah, you can!”

I cannot. I can barely hit 20 RPM.

As the music moves to upbeat electronic, then rock, I continue to pedal slowly while standing – anything to avoid sitting on the saddle. Others, however, have no problem following Hannah’s instructions to alternate between riding while sitting and standing. They even incorporate some basic choreography to occasionally lunge their upper body towards the handlebars.

after newsletter promotion

Past the halfway mark, Hannah’s words of encouragement reach a peak: “Take a look in that mirror … You’re doing something for your body. There’s no ‘I can’t’. I can! I WILL!”

At this point, my legs are burning and I have no choice but to sit and pedal, which hurts elsewhere. I’m alternating between two uncomfortable situations and unable to escape either because my feet are locked to the bike. It is literally a vicious cycle.

At track 10, Hannah announces it’s time for our legs to have a break – and reveals that it’s now time for our arms. It turns out the front of each bike has a container with two weighted rods: one is 2kg and the other is 3kg. To the beat of a breathy electronica version of Can You Feel the Love Tonight? I repeatedly lift a rod as if presenting a newborn Simba.

‘I trudge one leg after another with great effort, thinking only of Hannah’s promise of “recovery”.’

Finally, it’s time for the last track. “This is a celebration of the work you’ve just done. You should be so proud of yourself!” Hannah cheers. As the Chemical Brothers’ Hey Boy Hey Girl comes to an end, a staff member walks in holding a tray with rolls of cold, wet towels, which I automatically associate with the start of a 12-course Chinese banquet. I decline her offer as my consistently low RPM has not been enough to work up a sweat. But who knows? Maybe one day I’ll work up a legitimate, towel-worthy sweat. I can. I WILL!

There are Cyclebar studios in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Jennifer Wong is touring her standup show The Sweet and Sour of Power at Adelaide fringe, Melbourne international comedy festival, Sydney comedy festival, Perth comedy festival, Brisbane and Canberra.
