Parenting a Child With ADHD

Lack of focus ( inattention ) is one of the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) . It may be difficult for people with ADHD to maintain focus and stay organized.

Problems with focus can impact your time at school, work, home, and in social situations. Fortunately, specific strategies can help people with ADHD concentrate.

This article will share tips on how to improve focus if you have ADHD. It also includes advice for specific environments like work, school, and home.

If you have ADHD, and you are concerned about your lack of focus, there is help. Medication prescribed by your healthcare provider can provide relief. Specific strategies can also help increase focus, whether you take medication or not:

  • Breathe : Get in the habit of practicing deep breathing. This will help calm the nervous system. In addition, regular meditation practice may increase focus and decrease stress.  
  • Do one task at a time : Focus on one task at a time at work. This reduces anxiety and nervousness surrounding completing all the daily tasks.
  • Talk to others : If you feel comfortable sharing your condition with your community, this can help increase others' compassion. There are also support groups and licensed mental health professionals who can also help you on your journey.
  • Take movement breaks : Take breaks to move. Whether it is a walk around the office or a stretch, movement can help with focus.
  • Use timing techniques : To help with specific tasks, set a timer for an uninterrupted working period. For some people, it may mean 15 minutes, for others, 30. Try different time segments to determine what works for you. Your attention span may vary depending on your age.
  • Watch your diet : Try to maintain a healthy diet and reduce or eliminate sugar, alcohol, and smoking.
  • Plan ahead : A plan can help you feel in control of what you are doing, for how long, and how. Many times there are interruptions or complications, and it is good to have a plan and list in place to help you get back on course.
  • Organize your workspace : It is important to have a clean and organized space where you work. Clutter can worsen anxiety and confusion.
  • Set the environment : Your general environment is also important. A clean and ordered space can help your mindset and reduce stress. When you know where things are placed, it enables you to think clearer and relax.
  • Write it down : First, write down everything that you have to do. Then, organize the tasks by deadline and importance. If the item doesn’t have a deadline, give yourself one. Then place the tasks on your weekly and daily to-do lists. As you complete tasks, check them off to see how far you’ve come.
  • Reward yourself : If you have completed tasks and reached your goals—allow yourself to feel good and celebrate.
  • Journal and document : Track times that you focus better, or nights that you have difficulty sleeping. You can also journal about your thoughts and feelings. You may share your journal when discussing your progress with your healthcare provider.
  • Try behavior therapy : This is often used to help children with ADHD. Parents and teachers can train to help the child reduce problem behaviors.
  • Work with a licensed mental health professiona l: Psychotherapy like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help adults manage ADHD. Your healthcare provider can give you a referral.

Can people with ADHD drink caffeine for focus?

It depends. There are studies showing that caffeine may help increase focus, attention, and vigilance. Some ADHD medications have the same effect. A study of soldiers with ADHD found some benefits of caffeine pills in reducing symptoms, including inattention.

Why Can’t I Concentrate With ADHD?

When an individual has ADHD, they may have trouble focusing—this is part of the definition of the condition. According to the American Psychiatric Association, nine symptoms of inattention may be present in ADHD. These can include:

  • Difficulty staying focused at work, during play, or at home
  • Missing important details
  • Frequently missing deadlines or having consistently disorganized work
  • Difficulty following through with instructions or tasks
  • Avoiding tasks that take a long time or focus to complete
  • Appearing not to listen during a conversation
  • Difficulty remembering to keep appointments, pay bills, respond to emails, or return phone calls
  • Frequently losing things that are essential, such as keys, cell phone, or wallet
  • Being easily distractible

A person under 18 years old with six of these might be classified with inattentive ADHD.

Adults with long-term presentation of five or more of the above symptoms, with little to no symptoms of impulsivity or hyperactivity, may also have an inattentive presentation of ADHD.

Stressful Environments for People With ADHD

If you or your child has ADHD, there are tips to help you cope with a lack of focus in stressful environments.

Work/School

At both work and school, a clean and orderly environment can be helpful. A schedule can help keep you on track.

  • At school, a desk organized with all of the supplies needed can help with completing a task or assignment.
  • A 45-minute lesson might be broken up between listening to a lecture and doing an assignment. A visual time breakdown can be helpful.
  • If a movement or stretching break between tasks is not an option, a stress ball can be helpful to ensure some type of movement.
  • At work, a to-do list, timer, and break times are useful. Adults understand their focus timing better so they can gauge when the most focused work should be done during their workday.

Some individuals with ADHD have trouble sleeping . The bedroom should feel clean and comfortable—it should be an area for rest and relaxation.

  • Try not to have work items in the bedroom.
  • Set a time to turn off the phone, computer, and TV.
  • Make the bedroom a sanctuary with soft lighting to help calm yourself for sleep.
  • Try stretching that promotes relaxation.

With the many responsibilities and tasks to complete at home, the most important thing is to ensure you don't get overwhelmed. Organization is key.

  • A list of chores and tasks can help.
  • With younger people, try sitting down to discuss the chores, including how and when to complete them. This can help the child think through their responsibilities and start to understand how they work.

If your child has ADHD, the first step in helping them is having patience and understanding. Upon diagnosis, everything may feel new to both you and your child. There are age- and diagnosis-specific ways to help them succeed with ADHD.

  • Remember that this is your child's journey and communication with them is important.
  • Have open communication with your child’s teachers, coaches, counselors, and learning specialist. Your child will feel supported by their team and have the tools for success.
  • Even if you have ADHD as a parent, remember that each experience is different. Allow your child to feel their feelings and grow through the journey.

Problems with focus (inattention) are a common symptom of ADHD and can affect school, work, home life, and social life. Medications for ADHD can address this symptom, as can behavioral strategies to help you or your child focus.

If you need additional help for yourself or your child, your healthcare provider can refer you to the right mental health professional or specialist. They can help you create a plan to help your condition. It takes patience and understanding from everyone involved.

10 Simple Concentration and Focus Building Techniques for Kids with ADHD

Imagine that you are living inside a video game, where everything is coming at you at once. Every sight, sound, and sensation is a distraction. For a child with ADHD, getting through a typical day is something like that. And it explains a great deal about how they experience the world.

Children with ADHD typically have impairment of functions such as concentration, memory, impulse control, processing speed, and an inability to follow directions.

If you’re a parent of a child with ADD or ADHD, this most likely sounds all too familiar. Over the years, you’ve probably struggled through homework sessions with your child and tried (and failed) to get them to complete certain tasks like cleaning their room or finishing yard work. And on more than one occasion, you’ve probably felt completely drained by their high energy and seeming inability to focus.

The good news is, there is something you can do to help your child with ADHD to improve their concentration skills.

For years it was thought that each of us was born with a generous supply of brain cells but that we were unable to produce additional cells or make changes in how they function. Fairly recently, neuroscientists discovered the presence of something called neuroplasticity , which enables the brain to actually grow additional cells or modify the function of existing cells.

Amazingly, cognitive exercises have been found to produce desired changes in how the brain works and how it looks . What this means for parents is that you now can work with your child to help improve their ADHD symptoms.

Think of it this way: when you want to build up your muscles, what do you do? You do strength and endurance training. Brain exercises basically work on the same principle. They’re a way of helping your child build up focus and endurance in order to strengthen their ability to concentrate, process, and manage their emotions.

As a child psychologist and the father of a son with ADHD, I developed a host of exercises that help kids with ADHD improve their concentration. The key is presenting them as games that are fun for parents and children to do together.

Here are a few simple exercises to get you started. While doing these exercises together, be sure to provide reinforcement in the form of praise and encouragement. Keep a record of progress (usually, this will include how fast your child can complete a task or how long they can continue a task).

1. The Coin Game

Parents like this game because it improves memory and sequencing, as well as attention and concentration. And kids enjoy it because it’s fast-paced and fun.

First, you will need a small pile of assorted coins, a cardboard sheet to cover them, and a stopwatch or timer (there are lots of free timer apps available for your phone). Choose five of the coins from the pile (for this example, we’ll say three pennies and two nickels) and put them into a sequence.

Now, say to your child: “Look carefully at the coins arranged on the table.”

Then, cover the coins with the cardboard. Start the timer, and then ask them to make the same pattern using the coins from the pile. When they are finished, mark the time with the timer and remove the cardboard cover.

Write down the time it takes them to complete the pattern and whether or not they are correct. If your child doesn’t complete it correctly, have them keep trying until they can do it.

You can increase the difficulty of the patterns as you go and include pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars. You’ll see your child’s concentration and sequencing improve the more they play, which is a great reward for both of you.

2. Relaxation and Positive Imagery

Combining simple relaxation techniques such as deep breathing with positive visual imagery helps the brain to improve or learn new skills. For instance, research shows that if a person mentally practices their golf swing, the brain actually records the imaginary trials the same as if they were real trials, which leads to improvement on the golf course.

In other words, kids with ADHD can imagine that they’re paying attention in class or handling teasing, which can change their behavior at school. You and your child can use your creativity and give this a try.

3. Mind-Body Integration

An example of this technique would be to have your child attempt to sit in a chair without moving. The parent times how long the child can do this. Repeated practice over several weeks will show improvement. Through this activity, the neural connections between the brain and body are strengthened, providing improved self-control.

4. Crossword Puzzles and Picture Puzzles

It sounds simple, but these are great tools for kids with ADHD. Crossword puzzles improve attention for words and sequencing ability. Likewise, picture puzzles, in which your younger child has to look for things that are “wrong” in the picture or look for hard-to-find objects, also improve attention and concentration.

5. Memory and Concentration Games

Children’s games, such as Simon , are great ideas for improving memory and concentration. They are quick and fun.

Memory motivates the child to remember the location of picture squares, and Simon helps them memorize sequences of visual and auditory stimuli. Through repeated playing, brain circuits are exercised and challenged, which strengthens connections and thus improves function.

Also, there are countless free online games that also improve concentration or memory. You can find these games on sites such as PBS Kids , Fun Brain , and Mr. Nussbaum .

6. Dancing Sequence Games

There are various versions to select from, depending on your child’s age and what he or she likes. These games can be played on various video game platforms, including Xbox, Wii, and others. You will also need to purchase the dance mat that goes with your system.

These games improve concentration, processing speed, planning, sequencing, and motor integration. As an added bonus, they can also be a good form of aerobic exercise.

7. Story Based Games

To play these games, all you need is a good story book and a good imagination. You can simply read a short story and give the child a pop quiz on the content. Or, you can read a paragraph or two from a story and then ask your child to come up with what they think might come next.

Provide guidance to keep the content connected to the original story. You can then add your take on what happens after your child says what he thinks happens next. If possible, keep trading back and forth and see what you end up with.

These games help with building working memory and concentration. They can also help in the development of logic and sense of humor.

You can find mazes appropriate for the age of your child for free online. One site that has them is KrazyDad Mazes . Start off with easy ones and move forward. Keep track of speed and errors. Of course, don’t forget to praise improving scores.

Mazes are great for concentration, planning, sequencing, processing speed and visual-motor integration.

9. Puzzle Games

Puzzle games are very good for kids with ADHD or learning disabilities because they help build that brain muscle we were talking about, as do all these exercises. There are maze games (like Perplexus) where players must maneuver a small marble around challenging barriers inside a transparent ball, for example. You can vary the challenges to provide a variety of games.

10. Paddle Ball

Did you ever play with one of these as a kid? I did as a child and a young teen and really enjoyed it. Basically, it’s a wooden paddle with a rubber ball attached to it with a rubber band. The equipment should easy to find at a toy store or drug store.

Best to start with bouncing the ball downward and when that is mastered, switch to bouncing it upward. Keep track of how long your child can keep the ball bouncing. Encourage increasing the amount of time. For older kids, you might want to talk about what it would take to set a record to motivate them.

As you do these brain exercises, work together with your child, serving as their coach. Encourage them, and track their progress as they improve. Working together is a win-win solution because it also strengthens the relationship you have with your child.

Go ahead and have some fun. Do the exercises along with your child. And who knows, you may find your brain will work a little faster and smarter, too!

Simple & effective techniques for children.

Parenting becoming more challenging day by the day due to technological disruptions. These techniques are surely going to be helpful in growth of children.

Georgia B I love the idea of playing games with the child that help them manage their ADHD better! I think this is one of the best forms of treatment because the child is able to have fun while doing it. My doctor has recommended a few that I'm excited to try!

edwartfruitman All these tips are very useful, but as a psychiatrist I think the fifth tip Memory and Concentration Games would be more helpful for ADHD kids. Whereas, consulting a psychiatrist would be more supportive.

You may fancy trying massage therapy with your son? He may enjoy the relaxation of it??

I have a young boy who I work along side and he is a ball of energy and he thrives off impressing me. I always give him a task to do this comes with a reward.. He always wants to help me out? You could also swap the tv to structured family games time?

Also for the classroom he will need a responsibility and possibly a fidget toy to have in his hands? He may also benefit from a wooden foot stool this tends to be for the children who like the sensory feel touch etc

Tiffany, It also sounds like I wrote your comment myself... I was told my son would have a complete behavioral change when I had his extremely large adenoids removed. The adenoids create an upper airway blockage which causes the brain to not be allowed to fall into the proper state of R.E.M. at night which also causes a sleep apnea. Children process fatigue different than adults so they bounce off the wall instead of being slow and yawning and sleepy. We had high hopes for the surgery but Unfortunately his focus is still the same and he is still facing all the same bahvioral issues at school. Just throwing that out there to you and maybe that would be something you could look into. Right now my son is on an IEP at school which allows him to go into quieter classrooms at lunch and have a wiggle seat on his chair through an occupational therapist. We are now looking at a student intervention at his school alongside a behavioral specialist. We also do not want to go through with medications. You are not alone!!! This is so stressful! My son is so smart but the fidgeting and lack of focus may definitely be preventing him from learning.. good luck to you!

@Tiffany  Reading your comment felt like I wrote it myself.  I also have a first grade student but he just turned 6.  He had a very creative and active Kindergarten teacher last year that knew exactly how to work with him.  This year is not the same story, since he started school all I receive are notes about his lack of focus and not finishing his work during class.  To be honest I did not know how to handle it, I kept blaming him.  I took all his toys away, screen time was also limited.  Sadly it turned into a constant fight at home to the point that he will ask me to stay longer in after care.  Last Thursday I, like everyday, took my son to school and when he went to his desk, I notice they moved him to a corner looking at a wall... I lost it!  I started crying inconsolably. Seeing my kid alienated from the classroom and his friends broke my heart. I decided to reach through social media to friends and family that are teacher and psychologist and they helped me understand that not only the teacher was handling things wrong, I was also make it worst. 

I decided to make an appointment with a psychologist, is better to know the kind of help he needs and help me cope with the situation.  I also talked to the teacher again and address the chair issue.  I told her that if he stays alienated from the classroom, every time he comes to class, it will be a reminder that he  is not part of the group and that it doesn't matter what he does he has already been labeled.  I want every day to be a new start.  I stopped all punishments at home and instead of doing school work all the time, I'm focusing my time on teaching him, time managements skills, prioritizing, and concentration.  

I understand that just because a child have ADD or ADHD doesn't mean he has to be medicated.  Some psychologist start with coping techniques before actually trying medication.  Another myth is that medication will affect their personalities and that they will be like robots... that is not true. 

I know exactly how it feels and talking to other teachers, counselors and parents that have kids with this conditions will help you cope better with this and give you tools that you can share with your sons teacher.

it together at school and do well there, so he has the tools and is able to use

them. It could be that he needs more ways to expend some energy at home, or he

is just a really active kid and he may need to mature and develop some more. I

Create a Designated Workspace

A neurotypical brain is capable of filtering out multiple inputs, but the ADHD brain struggles to tune out noise and distractions in the workplace, making it exceptionally hard to focus.

To give the ADHD brain a hand, create a specific workplace for your child that is as distraction-free as possible. Ideally, this is a space that is only used for working, so the brain learns to associate it with quiet concentration. To the degree possible, this space should be separate from main living areas where other family members might be moving around or making noise. If your child is particularly sensitive to noise, he may also benefit from noise-cancelling headphones and listening to white noise.

Chunk Assignments

One feature of ADHD is difficulty with planning, organizing, and initiating tasks . To make homework less overwhelming and help your child develop planning skills, help to break down assignments into clearly defined  chunks,  or steps. For example, instead of “Write book report,” help develop a specific list of what has to be accomplished, such as, “1. Read book. 2. Come up with a thesis statement. 3. Write outline…” etc.

Have your child focus on completing one chunk at a time, and monitor his progress as he works. It helps to give feedback (with as much  positive   feedback as possible!) on their working style as they go.

Use the Pomodoro Technique

Teenagers and young adults often benefit from a time management method called the  Pomodoro Technique , which structures work time around frequent short breaks. The Pomodoro Technique works as follows:

  • Select the task to work on
  • Set a timer for 25 minutes
  • After the 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break
  • After four “pomodoros” (or 25-minute chunks), take a longer break of 15-30 minutes.

There are several apps that help keep track of pomodoros, such as “PomoDone,” “Focus Keeper,” or “Marinara Timer.”

For younger children, or teenagers with severe ADHD, this technique should be adjusted down to shorter intervals. Many young kids with ADHD can’t focus for more than 5-10 minutes. Find the amount of time that works—long enough for them to make progress but not so long that they get overly antsy, frustrated, or tired—and use frequent breaks to help them stay regulated.

Encourage Movement

Many children and teens with ADHD move around like Energizer Bunnies. While this may seem distracting, it’s actually the body’s way of compensating for  understimulation  in the brain. So to help your child focus, find ways to integrate movement into their work. This could mean having them stand up while doing work, or even doing work while walking or wiggling around, if the assignment allows. For work that has to be completed in one set place, allowing them to use a fidget toy can make a big difference in their ability to focus.

Outside of actual work time, it helps to take frequent “brain breaks” where movement is encouraged. Have you ever noticed that you tend to be more clear-headed after exercising or going for a walk? This is even more the case for those with ADHD. Whether it’s taking a 5-minute dance break, doing some jumping jacks or burpees, or taking a walk around the block, getting the body moving will help to stimulate their brains and give them an extra jolt of “focus” for the next round of working.

Most importantly, do your best to be patient with the process. Because ADHD has many different presentations, some strategies will work better for your child than others. Do a little trial and error, and check in often about what helps the most. Whenever you find something that works, take the opportunity to celebrate! Your child is working hard to overcome his struggles, and so are you. Keep up the great work!

Even though it's 2021, not much seems that different than a week ago. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to change all of our lives in ways we could never have imagined a year ago.

For older teens and young adults, the markers of how you’ve defined yourself—school, music, sports, friends, parties, work—have shifted dramatically in 2020. In fact, it’s probably difficult to imagine how and when these beloved parts of your lives will actually return. It’s been disorienting, disappointing and isolating to say the least. Many young people with ADHD have been struggling to make it through, avoid depression and get basic stuff done. Amidst increased anxiety and constant access to technology, it’s harder than ever to find focus and stay attentive. If you feel more distracted than ever, you are certainly not alone.

What is focus? Focus is a dynamic process of choosing what is important to notice, do or recall. Focus is the spotlight of your attention and how you direct it. Stress , worry and sadness negatively affect the ability to concentrate and persist with activities. Focus is affected by many things including a loss of familiar routines (where and when you do things) and predictability (how and why you do). Human brains, especially those with ADHD, benefit from these habits. The many disruptions of the pandemic have upended the practices that helped you get through each day and manage new situations before COVID-19 with a sense of clarity and security. They have affected your executive functioning skills on many levels and particularly the ability to maintain your attention in both desired and unpleasant tasks.

Focus is affected by many things including a loss of familiar routines (where and when you do stuff) and predictability (how and why you do things). There are four types of focus:

  • Selecting: Choosing where to put your attention.
  • Monitoring: Noticing where your attention is and where it is not.
  • Shifting: Actively bringing your attention back to the task at hand or moving it elsewhere.
  • Hyper-Focus: Intense concentration so that you lose track of time and place.

People with ADHD often face challenges in several of these categories simultaneously. You benefit from any daily routines because these structures help you prepare for and adapt to what’s coming. The routines fill in the gaps where your working memory may lapse. The many disruptions of the pandemic have upended whatever practices previously assisted you to get through each day and manage new situations with a sense of confidence and competence. Your focus is more limited and your attention wanders often.

Sustained attention—sticking with what you are doing and staying on task—is a key component of focus. It's the sense of "flow" most of us feel when we are chugging along at doing something. Most folks with ADHD don’t notice when they drift off but rather when they return from losing the focus of their attention. You need a plan for how to cope when you come back instead of feeling flustered and embarrassed. This means learning to be more mindful about what distracts you and so you can be more intentional about what you do when it’s over.

One of my clients, Aliyah, age 17, disliked her English class and the teacher. She would, in her own words, “space out all the time and then when he calls on me, I look stupid even though I’m not. I just don’t like to read.” We talked about what might help her stay interested in class by naming when she’s bored . I asked her to write down her favorite distractions. The next week, she waved a piece of paper at me: “Here it is, my F-box: things that F-ing distract me in that stupid F-ing class.” Now we had a place to begin. Once you know what distracts you, you can create interventions for catching up without feeling overwhelmed or ashamed.

Although a lot of teens and young adults with ADHD don’t like lists or calendars, many have confided in me that they do see the benefits of using them as a way to organize and remember things. It’s the same thing with my “Coming Back Confidently Program.” You may not like it at first but it will help you adapt better to your wandering attention. When you develop more awareness about what takes you off your focus, you’ll learn how to bring yourself back to the task at hand more effectively.

Follow these tips:

  • Be kind to yourself: Practice self-compassion. You’ve got to start with this. It doesn’t help to put yourself down because you struggle with focus and sustained attention. That’s a natural part of having ADHD. So put your negative self-talk aside and stick with curiosity. This will lead towards learning effective skills and better self-esteem . This is a time to adjust your expectations for yourself to what's possible in pandemic living, not pre-pandemic standards.
  • Consider the successes and the challenges: In order to understand how you lose your focus, you have to start with when you easily maintain it. Set aside 15 minutes in a quiet setting for this exercise. First, ask yourself: “What do I really like to do that’s easy for me to pay attention to? What does it feel like when I’m in the flow?” Next, ponder: “When do I tend to lose my focus and drift off? What do I think about when this happens? Is there a pattern to this?” Thirdly, reflect on when you return from your attention break: “How do you cope and what do you do? How would you prefer to respond?” Write down your answers.
  • Make connections: Pick one challenge with your focus and one ideal response. Think about creating an alternative behavior and a phrase or two that will buy you some time when you return from an interruption in your attention. Consider something like: “That’s a good question. Hmm.” Or, “Can I have a minute to think about this and get back to you?” Then, gather your thoughts quickly and say what’s on your mind.
  • Manage hyper-focus: While hyper-focus can result in high productivity , it also raises stress levels in your brain and gobbles up critical energy for thinking. Set your timer on your phone so you take a short break to go to the bathroom or get a snack to keep yourself going. Make a note of what was happening when you stopped so you know what exactly to do when you get back.
  • Limit your technology: When you are actively trying to get something done, block your access to certain sites and turn off notifications from social media or gaming apps. Either set a timer and check these once an hour during your short break or wait until you meet a goal you've set for your work, chore, etc.

Focus, Not Concentration

Focusing on homework can sometimes feel like a struggle, especially when there are so many other things you might prefer to be doing. Perhaps your attention is constantly being diverted to your phone, you’re noticing hunger pangs, or you’re simply tempted to lie down for a quick snooze. Fortunately, there’s a silver lining – you can overcome these distractions and realign your focus by implementing some straightforward adjustments to your study habits.

Jake uses sports analogies to relate to his studies, while Sarah employs visual aids for her math work, proving that focus is about engaging actively with your work.

Tip 1️⃣ : Exercise First

Exercise helps Jake manage his ADHD and enhances Sarah’s concentration, especially before tackling challenging subjects like math.

The Science of Exercise and Focus

Research indicates that cardio exercises, which quicken your heart rate, enhance memory and cognitive skills. Activities like jogging, cycling, playing a sport, or any fast-paced exercise fall into this category. Engaging in such exercises just before diving into your schoolwork can invigorate your body. This increased blood flow activates your brain, making it more alert and primed to concentrate on homework tasks.

Incorporating Exercise into Your Daily Routine

⏱️The 52-17 rule can be a powerful tool for optimizing exercise or ‘brain breaks’ during homework sessions. This rule suggests working intently for 52 minutes followed by a 17-minute break. This pattern aligns with the brain’s natural rhythm of concentration and rest, fostering productivity and mental agility.

When you apply this rule to your homework, you work in focused, undistracted bursts, knowing a break is just around the corner. This can help reduce burnout and keep your mind sharp. During the 17-minute break, engage in activities that refresh you – a brisk walk, a light snack, or a different kind of mental activity. These breaks are not just pauses but are designed to rejuvenate your brain, making your study time more effective.

  • Incorporate stretching or light exercise during study breaks.
  • Try different forms of exercise to find what best suits your routine.

Tip 2️⃣ : Set a Routine

Jake and Sarah demonstrate the power of a structured routine, but it was not easy and took time and effort to get into a rhythm. Since Jake also struggled with executive dysfunction , the skill development process took more time and goal-directed perseverance. Jake learned to synchronize his study and sports schedules using a planner, while Sarah dedicates specific times for her math practice. 

A well-planned routine simplifies productivity, especially with homework. It’s about creating a habit, like sitting at your desk after school, silencing your phone, outlining your tasks, and tackling the most important ones first. This approach streamlines your focus and helps efficiently complete projects. For students with executive functioning challenges , it can be helpful to get professional coaching help in order to build the routine, study skills, and foster greater independence and consistency in the process. 

Set deadlines

When you are in the right nightly homework routine it’s easier to set deadlines for getting assignments done. Having a consistent homework schedule gives you a chance to set deadlines on how much time you need to or want to spend on specific short and long term assignments.  

How to Make a Schedule:

Taking charge of tracking your school work and personal life can significantly boost your focus. Utilize a digital calendar or a physical planner to keep tabs on assignment due dates. This habit isn’t just about high school; it’s prep for college and your future career, empowering you to steer your own path.

If you’re tech-savvy and not easily distracted, your phone can be a great tool. Set reminders for study sessions or material reviews. On the flip side, there’s something about the act of writing that cements information in your memory. Consider getting a cool journal or daily planner for this purpose. Not only does it help you remember, but it also adds a personal touch to your organization game.

  • Jake recommends this planner for student-athletes. 
  • Review and adjust your routine weekly to find what works best.
  • Include leisure activities in your routine for a balanced approach. 25 minutes of focus time with a 5-minute brain brake. This is known as the Pomodoro Technique.

Tip 3️⃣ : Be Prepared

To maintain focus and avoid distractions during your study sessions, it’s crucial to be well-prepared. Coach Jessica Gale, an Executive Function Coach with Effective Effort Consulting , advises:

“Before you begin each day’s work, make sure you have everything you need at hand,” recommends Coach Gale. “This includes a list of contacts like teachers and counselors, materials for note-taking, your daily schedule, and a glass of water. Being this organized prevents the need to step away to find something, keeping distractions at bay and helping you stay focused on your tasks.”

Set the Mood

Listening to the right kind of music can enhance your study sessions. This is a personal experience and every student needs to figure out what type of music promotes the ideal focus and productivity. 

Research shows that classical music, especially consistent and soothing tracks, can improve concentration and information retention. Avoid large orchestral pieces with dramatic variations in volume, as they may distract more than help. Opt for elevator-style, steady background music. To enhance focus, consider using noise-canceling headphones. For a suitable playlist, check out the “Classical Study Music” playlist on YouTube, offering a selection of calm and steady classical tunes ideal for studying.

Avoid heavy meals

Eating a large meal before studying isn’t recommended, as it can lead to sluggishness and reduced focus. The body expends a significant amount of energy digesting big meals, diverting attention away from mental tasks. Opting for a light snack is a better choice.

 For instance:

  • 🥤 Soda : High in sugar, it can cause a rapid spike and crash in insulin levels, leading to an energy slump.
  • 🍬 Candy : Similar to soda, candy’s high sugar content can lead to quick energy highs followed by sharp drops.
  • 🍟 Fried Foods : Often loaded with fats and lacking nutritional value, these can make you feel lethargic and less able to concentrate.

These foods trigger quick insulin spikes, but these are followed by rapid crashes, leaving you feeling drained and unfocused.

Fuel up with water and healthy snacks.

Staying hydrated and well-fed is key to maintaining focus and absorbing information effectively. Ensure you have a water bottle or thermos within reach during your study sessions, and take regular sips to stay refreshed, especially if you start feeling fatigued or your attention wanes. 

Additionally, keep some nutritious snacks on hand for when hunger strikes. Optimal study snacks that fuel your brain include:

  • Apple slices paired with peanut butter
  • A variety of nuts, with almonds being a great choice
  • Greek yogurt for a protein boost
  • A refreshing fruit salad
  • A piece of dark chocolate for a quick energy lift

Impact of sugary foods on focus and ADHD. 

While planning snacks for study sessions, it’s important to be mindful of the effects of sugar, especially for individuals with ADHD. High sugar intake can potentially exacerbate ADHD symptoms. Sugary snacks can lead to quick spikes in blood sugar levels, followed by a rapid drop, which might result in fluctuating energy levels and difficulty in maintaining focus. This can be particularly challenging for those with ADHD, as they may already face hurdles in sustaining attention and managing impulses.

Choosing snacks that are low in sugar and high in protein or healthy fats, like the ones previously mentioned (apple slices with peanut butter, nuts, Greek yogurt, fruit salad, and dark chocolate), can provide more stable and sustained energy, helping to maintain better focus and concentration during study sessions.

Tip 4️⃣ : Establish a WorkSpace

Jake’s workspace is free from gaming distractions, aiding his ADHD management. Sarah’s space is equipped with math resources, and her focus App shields her from social media distractions. 

Have a Designated Study Space

Studying at the kitchen table might seem convenient, but it’s often not the ideal spot. Being in a communal area means it’s likely to be a high-traffic zone, which can be distracting. Additionally, since it’s also a space for meals, you might have to interrupt your study session to make way for dinner preparations.

Such interruptions not only disrupt your immediate focus, particularly when grappling with complex topics, but also require you to spend extra time later reorganizing your materials. Studies suggest that having a specific, designated area for studying can significantly enhance your ability to concentrate on your work. 

Benefits of avoiding homework in your bedroom

🛏️ Better Sleep Hygiene : Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for rest. Doing homework there can blur the line between relaxation and work, potentially leading to difficulties falling asleep or disrupted sleep patterns. Keeping study spaces separate helps your brain associate the bedroom with restfulness and relaxation.

🚫 Reduced Distractions : Bedrooms often contain numerous personal distractions such as gadgets, games, or comfortable beds that can tempt you away from studying. By choosing a different study area, you minimize these distractions, which can enhance your focus and productivity.

🧠 Clearer Mental Segmentation : Having separate spaces for sleep, relaxation, and work helps in mentally categorizing different activities. When you avoid doing homework in your bedroom, it helps in creating a mental distinction between time for work and time for rest, leading to a more balanced and organized mindset.

Declutter Your Personal Space

Decluttering is crucial for enhancing focus and productivity. A well-organized study space, where everything has its place, streamlines the process of finding what you need when you need it. By keeping your writing supplies in a pencil box or desk organizer and sorting your papers by subject into folders, you minimize time spent searching for materials. This organization directly impacts your ability to focus on the task at hand.

“Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions. A clear space equals a clear mind, and a clear mind is the key to effective learning.”

Before starting your work, take a moment to tidy up your study area. Remove unnecessary items, file completed assignments appropriately, and dispose of any trash. This not only clears your physical space but also declutters your mind, allowing for better concentration and more efficient study sessions.

  • Ensure your workspace has good lighting and is comfortable (but NOT too comfortable 🙂)

Tip 5️⃣ : Remove All Distractions

Once you’ve chosen your study space, maximizing your study time requires eliminating distractions. This means switching off your phone and TV, and also tidying up your surroundings. A clean and organized workspace is key to maintaining focus and enhancing productivity.

Work on one assignment at a time.

When tackling math homework, avoid simultaneously listening to a biology lecture video. While it may seem like a productive multitasking effort, it can actually hinder your learning and will take longer. It’s more effective to complete one task before starting another. This also applies when taking History notes and watching Youtube. Developings strategies to avoid multitasking is particularly important for students with ADHD, who often face specific challenges with multitasking, such as:

  • 🔀 Difficulty in Shifting Focus : Students with ADHD may struggle to switch their attention between tasks smoothly, leading to reduced efficiency in both.
  • 😵 Overwhelm and Mental Fatigue : Trying to process multiple streams of information at once can be overwhelming and mentally exhausting for individuals with ADHD.
  • 🚫 Impaired Retention : Multitasking can negatively impact the ability to retain and recall information, a challenge that can be amplified in students with ADHD.

Also, avoid texting friends or engaging in conversations with family members while studying. These additional distractions can significantly disrupt focus and the quality of your work.

Block distracting apps and websites on your computer or tablet.

To enhance focus during study sessions, consider blocking distracting apps and websites on your computer or tablet. For example, you can use apps like Cold Turkey or Freedom to block social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter during your study hours. Tools like StayFocusd can help limit time spent on specific sites, like YouTube or gaming websites. By creating these digital barriers, you’ll find it easier to concentrate on your work without the lure of online distractions.

Avoid Multitasking to Be Focused on School Work

To avoid multitasking, Jake keeps his phone away during study time, while Sarah uses website blockers to stay focused, especially on math work.  Sarah recommends using an app called Forest App . 

Other Suggestions to avoid multitasking pitfalls:

  • Inform family or friends of your study schedule to minimize interruptions.
  • Use noise-cancelling headphones if you’re easily distracted by external sounds.

Tip 6️⃣ : Active Note-Taking and Study Skills

Active note-taking is crucial for enhancing memory and personal connection to study material, particularly important for students with ADHD. 

The research highlights two key benefits of notetaking: 

  • Effective note-taking, more than just jotting down information, involves engaging with the content in a meaningful way, such as through diagrams, bullet points, or color-coding, aiding in focus and understanding.
  • For individuals with ADHD, personalized note-taking strategies are vital for reinforcing learning and facilitating later review for tests. This tailored approach to note-taking can significantly improve comprehension and retention of study materials.

Active learning skills like self-testing can enhance memory retention and recall. This practice, often referred to as the “testing effect,” involves actively engaging with the material through self-assessment rather than passively reviewing it. When you test yourself on the material you’re learning, it requires you to retrieve information from memory, strengthening your ability to recall it later.

This process does more than just help you remember the facts or concepts in the short term. Each time you retrieve a piece of information, it becomes more firmly embedded in your memory, making it easier to recall in the future. This is particularly beneficial for long-term retention, which is crucial for academic success.

Self-testing often reveals gaps in your knowledge, allowing you to focus your studies more effectively on areas that need more attention. This targeted approach to studying can lead to more efficient and effective learning, as opposed to spending time reviewing material you already know well.

Students who struggle with notetaking or active study skills can fall behind in the learning process. Many of these students will access tutoring help to get caught up. However, the cycle will repeat itself without active learning strategies to keep up with the daily demands of school.

Turn your homework into a game to make it more fun.

Set a timer and challenge yourself to correctly answer as many questions as possible in a set time, like five minutes, or use flashcards for a quick knowledge test. Setting small, achievable goals adds an element of fun to your studies. Additionally, engaging in quizzes with friends or family, where each correct answer earns points, turns learning into a competitive game. 

Online tools like Quizlet and Quizizz also offer interactive learning experiences, enabling middle and high school students to engage more deeply with their subjects through gamified quizzes and flashcards, enhancing both participation and retention. For a creative twist, weave stories around your study material, such as imagining living in a historical era you’re studying, to further enrich your learning experience.

Tip 7️⃣ : Take Breaks

Frequent breaks actually increase your productivity and focus. You’ll see that after each study session, the brain needs to be engaged with something different —  you need to activate other parts of your brain before going back to your studies so that you can reach top performance.

Take a break at least once an hour.

Regular breaks help Jake manage his ADHD and keep Sarah refreshed, making their study sessions more effective.

Sarah suggests

  • Try different types of breaks, like reading or baking, to see what refreshes you the most.
  • Use break time to hydrate and have a healthy snack, or get that well deserved after dinner desert. 

Move around or stretch during breaks

Taking a 17-minute break after 52 minutes of focused study is a great way to recharge. Here are five excellent break activities:

  • 🏋️‍♂️Physical Activity : Engage in a quick workout, like a brisk walk, push-ups, pull-ups, shoot some hoops, or some yoga stretches. This boosts blood circulation and re-energizes the body and mind.
  • 🧘 Mindfulness or Meditation : Spend the break practicing mindfulness or meditation. This can help clear the mind, reduce stress, and improve concentration for the next study session.
  • 🎨 Creative Outlet : Indulge in a creative activity like drawing, playing a musical instrument, or crafting. This shifts your brain from analytical to creative mode, offering a refreshing change.
  • 🍏💧 Snack and Hydration Brea k: Have a healthy snack, like fruits or nuts, and hydrate with water or herbal tea. This nourishes your body and can improve cognitive function.
  • 👫 Interaction : If you have a sibling, plan your breaks together and go outside together. 

Tip 8️⃣ : How to Stop Procrastinating

Jake changes his study location to keep things fresh, and Sarah sets mini-goals for each math study session to stay on track. Since Math is Sarah’s most challenges tasks, she starts it first in order to avoid procrastination or fatigue. 

Jake also suggests

  • Keep a procrastination diary to understand and mitigate your triggers. A sticky note next to your desk is a helpful way to track your procrastination tendencies. 
  • Break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Decide to just get started on first benchmark. 

Redirect your attention if you notice your mind wandering. Try “Focus, refocus” techniques. 

It’s hard to maintain focus in the evening after a long school day. Procrastination becomes a common challenges to manage. “Focus, refocus” techniques helps to enhance your ability to maintain continuous concentration, even in the face of distractions, which is crucial for efficient and productive study sessions.

This training involves:

  • 🔍 Recognizing Distractions : Becoming aware when your focus shifts from the task at hand.
  • 🔍 Refocusing Techniques : Practicing methods to promptly bring your attention back to your work. This might involve deep breathing, a brief moment of mindfulness, or a quick review of what you were studying.

Move to a new study spot if you’re feeling bored.

Shifting your study environment can re-energize your brain and sharpen your focus. Consider relocating to a new room, stepping outside, or choosing a completely different venue like a library study room. A fresh setting can make you feel more alert and revitalized. Even small changes to your usual study area can make a difference. Try adding new decorations or simply switching to a different seat at your dining table. 

Put away anything that might make it hard to concentrate.

One of the key strategies to improve focus in high school and avoid procrastination is to minimize digital distractions. Despite the common belief in multitasking, research indicates that our brains can only focus on one task at a time. Texts and social media notifications, if attended to during learning sessions, will split your attention. 

“A focused mind is like a fortress; don’t let digital distractions breach its walls.”

To combat this, it’s crucial to keep your phone away from your study area and disable social media notifications during class time. Additionally, consider using anti-distraction apps that block potential interruptions, helping you maintain focus on your studies.

Effective Strategies and Support

Don’t be afraid to let others know that you’re studying and require some time and space to get your work done. Decide on fixed hours for studying and tell your friends and family members that you won’t be available during that time of the day. If others respect your study time, you’ll be more inclined to respect it as well. 

🎉 Reward yourself with something fun when you’re done.

After completing a study session, treat yourself to a reward as a motivation booster. For instance, taking a 20 minutes break to bake brownies is wonderful incentive to reward your hard work.

🧘 Be Patient, Trust the Process

Understand that mastering focus takes time and practice. As an example, if you struggle with a particular subject, remind yourself that gradual improvement is better than instant perfection.

🙋Reach out to your guidance counselor

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure about your academic path, don’t hesitate to talk to your guidance counselor. They can provide tailored advice, like suggesting a study group or tutor if you’re struggling with a specific subject.

Identify study techniques that are effective for you and make them a regular part of your routine. For instance, if you find that studying in short bursts with frequent breaks works best, incorporate this method consistently into your study habits.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience more obstacles in their path to success than the average student. The symptoms of ADHD, such as inability to pay attention, difficulty sitting still, and difficulty controlling impulses, can make it hard for children with this diagnosis to do well in school.

To meet the needs of children with ADHD, schools may offer

  • ADHD treatments, such as behavioral classroom management or organizational training;
  • Special education services; or
  • Accommodations to lessen the effect of ADHD on their learning.

Classroom Treatment Strategies for ADHD Students

There are some school-based management strategies shown to be effective for ADHD students: behavioral classroom management and organizational training. 1

Parents report that only about 1 in 3 children with ADHD receive behavioral classroom management. 2

The behavioral classroom management approach encourages a student’s positive behaviors in the classroom, through a reward systems or a daily report card, and discourages their negative behaviors. This teacher-led approach has been shown to influence student behavior in a constructive manner, increasing academic engagement. Although tested mostly in elementary schools, behavioral classroom management has been shown to work students of all ages. 1

Organizational training teaches children time management, planning skills, and ways to keep school materials organized in order to optimize student learning and reduce distractions. This management strategy has been tested with children and adolescents. 1

These two management strategies require trained staff—including teachers, counselors, or school psychologists—follow a specific plan to teach and support positive behavior.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that the school environment, program, or placement is a part of any ADHD treatment plan. AAP also recommends teacher-administered behavior therapy as a treatment for school-aged children with ADHD. You can talk to your child’s healthcare provider and teachers about working together to support your child.

Special Education Services and Accommodations

Most children with ADHD receive some school services, such as special education services and accommodations. There are two laws that govern special services and accommodations for children with disabilities:

  • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

The support a child with ADHD receives at school will depend on if they meet the eligibility requirements for one of two federal plans funded by IDEA and Section 504: an individualized education program (IEP) or a 504 Plan.

What are the main differences between the two Plans?

IEPs provide individualized special education services to meet the unique needs of the child.

A 504 Plan provides services and changes to the learning environment to meet the needs of the child as adequately as other students. 3

Accommodations

IEP and 504 Plans can offer accommodations for students to help them manage their ADHD, including:

  • Extra time on tests;
  • Instruction and assignments tailored to the child;
  • Positive reinforcement and feedback;
  • Using technology to assist with tasks;
  • Allowing breaks or time to move around;
  • Changes to the environment to limit distraction; and
  • Extra help with staying organized.

Parents of children with ADHD report receiving more services through an IEP than through a 504 plan. 2

There is limited information about which types of accommodations are effective for children with ADHD. 3 However, there is evidence that setting clear expectations, providing immediate positive feedback, and communicating daily with parents through a daily report card can help. 4

What Teachers Can Do To Help

For teachers, helping children manage their ADHD symptoms can present a challenge. Most children with ADHD are not enrolled in special education classes, but do need extra assistance on a daily basis. The National Resource Center on ADHD provides information for teachers from experts on how to help students with ADHD.

Here are some tips for classroom success.

Communication

  • Give frequent feedback and attention to positive behavior;
  • Be sensitive to the influence of ADHD on emotions, such as self-esteem issues or difficulty regulating feelings;
  • Provide extra warnings before transitions and changes in routines; and
  • Understand that children with ADHD may become deeply absorbed in activities that interest them (hyper-focus) and may need extra assistance shifting their attention.

Assignments and Tasks

  • Make assignments clear—check with the student to see if they understand what they need to do;
  • Provide choices to show mastery (for example, let the student choose among written essay, oral report, online quiz, or hands-on project;
  • Make sure assignments are not long and repetitive. Shorter assignments that provide a little challenge without being too hard may work well;
  • Allow breaks—for children with ADHD, paying attention takes extra effort and can be very tiring;
  • Allow time to move and exercise;
  • Minimize distractions in the classroom; and
  • Use organizational tools, such as a homework folder, to limit the number of things the child has to track.

Develop a Plan That Fits the Child

  • Observe and talk with the student about what helps or distracts them (for example, fidget tools, limiting eye contact when listening, background music, or moving while learning can be beneficial or distracting depending on the child);
  • Communicate with parents on a regular basis; and
  • Involve the school counselor or psychologist.

Close collaboration between the school, parents, and healthcare providers will help ensure the child gets the right support.

CDC funds the National Resource Center on ADHD (NRC), a program of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). The NRC provides resources, information, and advice for parents on how to help their child. Learn more about their services.

How to best advocate for your child

  • Understand your child’s diagnosis, how it impacts their education, and what can be done at home to help.
  • Understand your child’s IEP. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Speak with your child’s teacher.
  • When possible, obtain written documentation from teachers, administrators, or other professionals working with your child.
  • Know your rights.
  • Play an active role in preparing your child’s IEP or 504 Plan.
  • Keep careful records, including written documentation, communication between home and school, progress reports, and evaluations.
  • Try to maintain a good working relationship with the school while being a strong advocate for your child.
  • Communicate any concerns you may have about your child’s progress or IEP or 504 Plan.
  • Encourage your child every day, and work with your child to create a system to help with homework and other school projects. 5

  • School support and services are regulated by laws. Every autumn, thousands of students move away from the structure and safety of home to the freedoms of college life. While it's an exciting time filled with many possibilities for learning and growth, it can also be challenging academically and socially—especially for college students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Learn some of the challenges that college students with ADHD face, as well as strategies that can be used to overcome these obstacles. This includes learning how to study with ADHD and taking certain actions to foster friendships with other students.

Sarah D. Wright , ADHD coach and author of "Fidget to Focus: Outwit Your Boredom—Sensory Strategies for Living with ADD," explains that successful students usually have four qualities that help them achieve their goals:

  • Sticking with things even when the going gets tough (perseverance)
  • Ability to delay gratification and focus on the big picture
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Striking the right balance between fun and work

These particular skills, however, don’t come easily to people with ADHD. One of the hallmarks of this mental health condition is impaired executive functioning . This means that students with ADHD may struggle with staying organized, sticking to a plan, and managing time effectively.

How ADHD Affects College Students

College students often face more responsibilities, less structured time, increased distractions, and new social situations—all while lacking access to many of the support systems they had in high school. Impaired executive functioning can make handling these changes a bit harder for students with ADHD, resulting in:

  • Poor academic performance and achievement : Students with ADHD frequently report feeling dissatisfied with their grades. They may struggle in their classes due to difficulties starting and completing tasks, disorganization, problems remembering assignments, difficulty memorizing facts, and trouble working on lengthy papers or complex math problems .
  • Troubles with time management : Students with ADHD often have irregular lifestyles that result from poor time management. This can create problems with being on time, preparing and planning for the future, and prioritizing tasks.
  • Difficulty regulating and managing emotions : Students with ADHD also often struggle with social issues, negative thoughts, and poor self-esteem. Some ADHD symptoms can make friendships and other relationships more challenging while worrying about these issues contributes to poor self-image.

The good news is that these areas of executive function can be improved. For most college students with ADHD, the problem isn’t in knowing what to do, it's getting it done. Developing strategies that focus on this goal can lead to positive academic and social effects.

Tips for Succeeding in College With ADHD

There are several strategies you can use to help stay on track if you are a college student with ADHD. Here are seven that Wright suggests.

1. Take Steps to Start the Day on Time

There are three main factors that contribute to being late in the morning: Getting up late, getting sidetracked, and being disorganized.

If Getting Up Late Is an Issue

Set two alarms to go off in sequence. Put the first alarm across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Put the second where you know it will bother your roommates, increasing the consequences if you don’t get out of bed and turn it off. Set both alarms to go off early so you can take your time getting ready.

If Getting Sidetracked Is an Issue

If certain actions tend to derail you, like checking your email or reading the news, make it a rule that those activities must wait until later in the day so you can stay on task . Also, figure out how much time you need to dress, eat, and get organized, then set alarms or other reminders to cue these tasks.

Three options are:

  • Use a music mix as a timer . If you have 30 minutes to get ready, the schedule might look like this: wash and dress to songs 1 to 3, eat breakfast to songs 4 to 6, get your stuff together during song 7, and walk out the door by song 8. This option works best if you use the same mix every morning.
  • Use your phone or buy a programmable reminder watch so your alarms are always nearby.
  • Put a big wall clock in your room where you can easily see it . If your room is part of a suite with a common room and bathroom, put wall clocks in those spaces as well.

If Being Disorganized Is the Issue

Create a "launch pad" by your door. Collect all of the things you’ll need the next day the night before (like your backpack and keys), and put them on the pad so you can grab them and go. Include a note to help you remember important events for the day, such as an appointment or quiz.

2. Work With Your Urge to Procrastinate

Though it may sound counterproductive, if you feel the urge to procrastinate , go with it. When you have ADHD, sometimes things only get done right before they're due. At that point, nothing has higher priority, increasing the urgency and consequences if you don’t do them now. These qualities are what can finally make a task doable, so work with them.

If you plan to procrastinate, it's important to stack the deck so you can pull it off. For example, if you have to write a paper, make sure you’ve done the reading or research in advance and have some idea of what you want to write. Next, figure out how many hours you’ll need, block those hours out in your schedule, and then, with the deadline in sight, sit down and do it.

Understanding your tendency to procrastinate with ADHD can help you plan ahead so you won't be left scrambling to finish projects at the last minute.

3. Study Smarter, Not Harder

Boredom and working memory issues can make studying a bit more challenging for students with ADHD. Rather than trying harder to force the information into your head, get creative with the learning process.

If you're wondering how to study with ADHD, research shows that multi-modal learning or learning via a variety of different methods can be helpful. Ideas include:

  • Highlight text with different-colored pens.
  • Make doodles when taking notes.
  • Record notes as voice memos and listen to them as you walk across campus.
  • Use mnemonics to create funny ways to remember facts.
  • Stand up while you study.
  • Read assignments aloud using an expressive (not boring) voice.
  • If you can, get the audio version of a book you need to read and listen to it while you take notes and/or exercise.
  • Work with a study buddy.

These won't all work for every person, but try mixing up your strategies and see what happens. Taking study breaks every couple of hours and getting enough sleep are also part of studying smarter, not harder.

Sleep impacts learning in two main ways. First, sleep deprivation has a negative impact on  short-term memory , which is what you use to learn the materials when you study. Second, sleep is needed to move short-term memories into long-term memory, which is what you rely on when it's time to take the test.

Sleep is important for both short- and long-term memory, making it critical for both learning new material and recalling what you've learned.

4. Schedule Your Study Time

Many students with ADHD are highly intelligent. They can pull off a passing grade, or even a good one, in high school by cramming their studies in the night before a test.

This strategy doesn't work as well in college since cramming reduces your ability to retain what you've learned long-term . This can make it harder to remember what you need to know once you enter your field of choice.

One good rule of thumb for college students is to study two to two-and-a-half hours per week for every course credit hour. Put this time into your schedule to make sure you have it.

5. Plan and Prioritize Your Time

It may sound strange, but it's important to plan time to plan. If you don’t develop this habit, you may find yourself always being reactive with your day rather than proactive—the latter of which can help you take more control over your schedule .

Set aside time on Monday mornings to develop a high-level plan for the week, using Friday mornings to plan for the weekend. In addition, do a daily review of your plan over breakfast—possibly adding pertinent details—to make sure you know what’s coming your way that day.

When making your plans, differentiate between what you need to do and everything that can or should be done. Prioritize what needs to be done first, taking care of these items before moving on to lower-priority tasks on your list.

6. Implement Strategies to Stick to Your Plan

With ADHD, sticking to a plan is often difficult. If you like rewards, use them to assist with this. For instance, you might tell yourself, "I’ll read for two hours, then go to the coffee house." Having something to look forward to can make it easier to muster through your studies.

If you’re competitive, use this personality trait instead. Pick another student in your class whom you want to do better than and go for it. If you know that you respond to social pressure, make plans to study with classmates so you won’t let them down. Or hire a tutor so you have structured study time.

Research suggests that focusing on skills related to time management , target planning, goal setting, organization, and problem-solving can all be helpful for students with ADHD.

Hiring a coach can also be beneficial. There is growing evidence, both research-based and anecdotal, that supports ADHD coaching as a vital strategy in helping students learn to plan, prioritize, and persist in following their plans.

This type of coaching is sometimes described as a form of life coaching influenced by cognitive behavioral-type therapy , which helps people develop behaviors, skills, and strategies to better deal with ADHD symptoms. It can lead to greater self-determination and direction, reduced feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, and increased self-confidence and self-sufficiency.

7. Manage Your Medication

One study found that only around 53% of college students with ADHD adhere to their medication plan. Poor medication adherence can have serious consequences, contributing to poor academic performance and decreased graduation rates. 

Steps you can take to stay on top of your ADHD medications include:

  • Find a local healthcare provider : Regularly monitoring your medications helps ensure that you are at the best dosage for you. If you're going to school a long way from home, find a local healthcare provider to meet with regularly. You can also schedule regular visits with your university's health services.
  • Find a local pharmacy : Determine where you'll order and pick up your medication. Set reminders on your phone so you know when to refill your prescription. You may also be able to sign up for text reminders.
  • Store medications safely : Abuse of ADHD medications is on the rise on college campuses, even though this can result in high blood pressure, increased feelings of anger and distrust, trouble sleeping, and even strokes. Keep your ADHD medications in a safe location and never share them with others. 
  • Set reminders to take your medication : If you are struggling to take your medication as prescribed, consider using a reminder app or setting reminders on your phone.

Research points to medication as the most effective and available ADHD treatment option. However, it's important to talk to your care provider to decide the best treatment approach for your individual situation and needs.

Social Strategies for Students With ADHD

Interpersonal challenges are also common for college students with ADHD. While being out on your own for the first time can be exciting, this mental health condition can lead to difficulties in building and maintaining friendships .

CHADD—which stands for Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, an organization funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—offers these tips:

  • Remember that you aren't the only one who feels the way you do . Other students may be feeling just as excited (and overwhelmed) as you. During orientation, help them feel more comfortable by being friendly and listening when they share their concerns.
  • Look for opportunities to meet and interact with others . You might make new friends in class, in your dorm, at the school cafeteria, or at other places on campus. View each of these locations as an opportunity to expand your social network .
  • Find activities or clubs to join. Colleges and universities are great places to explore hobbies and meet people who share your interests. Check out bulletin boards on campus or look at your school's website to learn more about the options that are available. 
  • Stay in contact with your current friends . Don't let your high school friendships fade into the background just because you're at college. While you're busy with new things and might not see each other every day, stay in touch by phone, text, social media, or email. Your current friends can be great sources of social support .

15 Tips for Reducing Homework Stress & Completion Time

For students with adhd, consistency is key when it comes to handing in homework on time. here, solutions for succeeding at home and in the classroom..

Addressing homework problems is critical, since they are major reasons children with attention deficit disorder (ADHD or ADD) fail in school. Almost every parent of a student with ADHD has been on the front lines of homework battles. Keep in mind that homework doesn’t have to be exhaustive to be effective.

The National Education Association and the Parent Teacher Association recommend 10 minutes of homework per subject per day. In other words, a sixth-grader would spend roughly 60 minutes per evening on homework. If teachers seem to be piling it on, have a friendly discussion with them. In the meantime, these strategies can help.

How to Focus on Homework with ADHD

Solutions: in the classroom.

  • Post assignments on the board. Write the homework assignment in the same place on the board each day. Posting assignments to the school’s website is also helpful. Teachers and schools can also use Remind.com, which allows educators to send the assignment to parents and students, so there’s no doubt at home.
  • Set aside time each day for students to copy homework assignments in their planners. If attention or language deficits make copying hard for a student, ask another student to write the assignment and discreetly give it to the child. Consider allowing students to take a picture of the board using their cell phones, or e-mailing and texting parents the assignments, too.
  • Appoint “row captains” Many of our children have trouble keeping assignment books, so have another student check his work. My favorite is to appoint a row captain for each row in your classroom. At the beginning of class, these designated “leaders” should collect completed homework. At the end of class, they should check to see that homework assignments have been written down by each student in their row.

  • Develop a plan which ensures that completed homework returns to school. Talk with the parents of those students who consistently forget to bring their homework to school, and help them develop a plan for getting it there. Suggest that they purchase color-coded folders for all completed work. They can check to make sure homework is completed, is put in the appropriate folder, and is packed in the book bag for the next day.
  • Assign the right amount of homework. Some students with ADD work slowly and become easily frustrated. Assigning only the odd-numbered math problems lets a child demonstrate what he has learned without pushing him too hard. By assigning homework that is neither too difficult nor too time-consuming, teachers increase the likelihood that it will be completed.
  • Send parents a list of suggestions for productive homework sessions. Parents want to help their child but sometimes don’t know what to do. Two strategies you might mention: 1) establish a set homework time with input from the student; 2) find a quiet location that has good lighting and a clear work space with access to paper, pencils, and a computer.

Solutions: at Home

  • Make a plan for tracking homework assignments . Encourage your child to write every assignment in his daily planner. One high school senior wrote his assignments on 3 x 5 cards, pre-printed with the names of his courses, that he stored in his jeans pocket.As a backup, see whether assignments are also posted on a school website or app. Get contact information for a student in each class who would know the assignments.

  • Establish time for homework. Some children need a break after classes. Others work best while still in “school mode.” If after-school activities make a regular schedule impossible, post a weekly calendar that lists homework start and finish times.
  • Ask the teacher about assignment routines. The math teacher may say, “I assign algebra homework four nights a week, and give a test at the end of each chapter — roughly every two weeks.” This tells you that something is amiss if your child says he doesn’t have any math homework two nights in a row.
  • Schedule a five-minute break for every 20 minutes of work. Short, frequent breaks help children with ADHD recharge.
  • Respect your child’s “saturation point.” If he’s too tired or frustrated to finish his homework, let him stop. Write a note to the teacher explaining that he did as much as he could. If he has problems focusing, writes slowly, or needs extra time to understand concepts, assignments will consistently take longer than they should.
  • Talk with the teacher. If homework sessions are often emotionally exhausting, work with the teacher” to determine whether assignments are too long or are too difficult for your child.
  • Consider medication for homework time. Talk with your doctor about a short-acting medication, like Ritalin, which lasts three to four hours. Taking the medication between 3 and 5 p.m. shouldn’t interfere with sleep. Most medications given earlier in the day have worn off by late afternoon. When medications are working, students stay focused, complete homework quicker, and are more likely to remember the material they studied.
  • Monitor your child’s progress with a daily or weekly report. Daily and weekly reports from a teacher warn parents when their child is in danger of failing and in need of more supervision at home. The reports help you and your child identify missing homework assignments, so you can find them and get them to the teacher. Younger children need more frequent feedback, so a daily report may be best for them. In some cases, weekly reports may be sufficient for students in high school.
  • Request an extra textbook to use at home. Students with ADHD often leave their books at school. Having access to a textbook every night is essential. Once a student with ADHD falls behind, it is difficult to catch up. Since many schools have only one set of books for each student, you may have to purchase extra copies.

How to Concentrate on Your Homework

Focusing on homework can be tough, especially when you’d rather be doing anything else. Maybe your attention keeps wandering back to your phone, your stomach is growling, or you just want to put your head down and take a nap. The good news is that you can beat these distractions and get back on track with a few easy changes to your study routine.

Move around or stretch while you work.

Science shows that you learn and think better when you move.

  • Try sitting on an exercise ball or wobbly chair when you’re doing your homework. The movement may help you stay focused.

Fuel up with water and healthy snacks.

It’s really hard to concentrate and learn if you’re hungry or thirsty.

  • Apple slices with peanut butter
  • Nuts, especially almonds
  • Greek yogurt
  • Fruit salad
  • Dark chocolate

Put away anything that might make it hard to concentrate.

If you can’t stop looking at your phone, put it out of reach.

  • Some people actually concentrate better with a little noise in the background. If it helps you to have some quiet music on, that’s totally fine! But if you find that it distracts you, turn it off.

Block distracting apps and websites on your computer or tablet.

If you have to do homework on a device, focusing can be hard.

  • For example, you might need to block apps or websites like Facebook or YouTube while you’re working.
  • If you get alerts or notifications on your device, turn them off so they won’t distract you. The last thing you need is your tablet blowing up with Facebook notifications while you’re trying to work!

Work on one assignment at a time.

Multitasking will actually make you less productive.

  • Don’t try to text your friends or have a conversation with a family member while you’re doing homework, either.

Break your assignments into smaller tasks.

Focusing on one task at a time makes the work easier.

  • For example, if you’re supposed to read a book chapter and write a report, start by skimming the chapter headings for important points. Then, read the whole chapter and take notes. Next, make an outline for your report. After that, write the report, and finish up by checking it for mistakes.
  • If you have more than one assignment to work on, make a to-do list and put the hardest or most important projects first.

Redirect your attention if you notice your mind wandering.

Getting distracted is totally natural.

  • It can help to pick a specific thing to focus on to bring yourself back to the present. For example, pay attention to your breathing or to any sounds you can hear around you.
  • If you’re working with a friend or family member, ask them to help you stay on track. They can say something like, “Are you focused?” or tap you on the shoulder if they notice you getting distracted. Fidget with something to help you focus.

Some people concentrate better if they have something in their hands.

  • Fidgets are great concentration aids for some people, but are distracting for others. Don’t keep using a fidget if it’s taking your mind off your work.

Turn your homework into a game to make it more fun.

Pretend you’re on your own personal quiz show.

  • You can also turn it into a game with a friend or family member. For example, take turns quizzing each other and give points for each right answer. Whoever gets the most points wins the game.
  • Or, if you’d rather not play a structured game, try making up a story about what you’re doing. For instance, if you’re studying history, imagine yourself living in the time period you’re learning about.

Try working with a study buddy.

Choose someone who works hard and won’t distract you.

  • You could even get together with a small group. Trade notes, quiz each other, or just hang out quietly while you all do homework together.

Take a break at least once an hour.

Set a timer if you have trouble remembering to stop.

  • You can also use a timer to make sure your breaks don’t go on too long. Remember, the sooner you get back to work, the sooner you can get it done!
  • If you’re feeling really restless, frustrated, or distracted, it’s okay to take a break ahead of schedule. Give yourself a few minutes to unwind, then try again.

Pick a time when you feel awake and rested if possible.

You’ll focus better when you’re at your best.

  • You can’t always choose the perfect time to do your homework, but having a routine can still help you get in the zone when it’s time to work! Once you pick a time, try to stick to it.

Study in a quiet, comfortable spot.

Try to find a space with lots of light and room to spread out.

  • If you’re studying at home with your family, ask them to keep it down while you work.
  • Be careful studying in your room—if you use a space where you usually sleep or relax, it’ll be hard to get into homework mode! Set aside a spot just for homework, and don’t do your work in bed. [18] X Research source
  • Finding a good study space can be tough, especially if there are other people around. If you can’t find a quiet spot, put on some noise-canceling headphones. Listen to white noise or peaceful music without vocals to help you tune out background sounds.

Organize your study supplies.

It’s easier to focus when your stuff is easy to find.

  • If you like to nibble while you study, set your snacks out before you get started.
  • If there’s stuff in your study space that you don’t need, take a few minutes to clean it up or put it away before you start working. Put completed assignments in their folders and throw away any trash.

Move to a new study spot if you’re feeling bored.

A change of scenery can wake up your brain and help you refocus.

  • Even changing your usual study space a little can help. For example, put up some new decorations or move to the other side of the dining table.
  • It seems weird, but just the right amount of background noise can actually help you concentrate! That’s one reason some people work better in coffee shops or study halls.

Reward yourself with something fun when you’re done.

Pick something good so you’ll be motivated to finish.

  • For example, you could watch an episode of your favorite TV show, play a game you like, or call up a friend.

  • Take detailed notes in class to help you. If you are able to, type on the computer rather than handwrite (it won't make your hand ache, and it's faster, so long as you don't get distracted). Also, don't wear your most casual clothes for homework, as this will relax you and will make you focus less. Don't look at how much more you have to do; look at what you've done already, as this will make your assignments seem less daunting.
  • I used to have some trouble focusing on homework because I would always try to watch YouTube while doing it. It helped me to set a timer for 20 or so minutes and work on homework. Then I would take a 10 minute break. It helped me do homework without frying my brain.
  • When rewarding yourself, don't reward yourself with television or games. Sometimes it'll turn into procrastination. Instead, reward yourself with small stretches or a favorite snack.
  • If you need to use the bathroom or anything while you are working, assign a number of questions that you have to finish to use the bathroom. This will make you want to work harder!
  • Put your phone on airplane mode. This will mute your phone and you will have to manually put it back to regular mode. Only switch it off when you're done with all your work.
  • If you have something that you seriously don't want to do, take small 5-minute breaks between steps. This will calm your stress and help you concentrate more.

Health | ‘A horrible, perfect storm’: Frustrations rise as shortage of Adderall, other ADHD medication continues

All Jennifer Howell wanted was to find medication for her son. Instead, she was caught in a maze of desperate phone calls to pharmacies and physicians.

Her son, Linus, had been diagnosed with ADHD in 2021 during the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of his behavioral traits — restlessness, impulsivity, difficulty focusing — suddenly made sense. When he was first prescribed medication, its effects were instantaneous.

“It was something that changed him within 24 hours,” said Howell, a Lincoln Square resident. “It was enough for us to cry, saying, ‘Oh God, I wish we had known.’”

Howell recalled how Linus, now 10 years old, described how he felt: “When my neurons are working, I’m basically a genius.”

The relief was short-lived. In October 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration formally announced a nationwide Adderall shortage, leaving millions scrambling to obtain prescription stimulant medication. Over a year later, there’s no end in sight, and a tangled network of causes has made for no clear solution.

“It’s the single biggest crisis right now in clinical mental health,” said Greg Mattingly, president of the American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders and an associate clinical professor at Washington University in St. Louis. “It touches everyone.”

ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in the U.S. An estimated 9.8% of children aged 3 to 17, or about 6 million adolescents, have been diagnosed, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Stimulant medications like Adderall mitigate its symptoms by increasing dopamine levels in the brain.

Access to prescription stimulant medications first began to unravel at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Physicians started reporting a significant jump in ADHD diagnoses. Research compiled by FDA-affiliated scholars indicated that prescriptions for stimulant medications among people aged 20 to 29 rose 30% from April 2018 to March 2022. There are multiple theories on why that’s the case, including the ease of telehealth, increased ADHD awareness and the added stressors of remote work, experts say.

“There’s some suspicion that working virtually seemed to really challenge individuals who had ADHD,” said Julie Carbray, a clinical professor of psychiatry and nursing at the University of Illinois Chicago. “Along with that was the recognition that ADHD can be diagnosed in adulthood, which is sort of a newer concept.”

Meanwhile, a major drugmaker began to experience an Adderall manufacturing delay, according to the FDA. When patients turned to alternative prescription stimulant medications, those too became scarce. Although the manufacturing delay has since been resolved, its long-lasting effects are exacerbated by unprecedented demand. Many pharmacies nationwide still have unpredictable inventory.

“It was just a horrible, perfect storm that really has trapped our patients from getting what they need to work, to perform at school, to be able to live their lives,” Carbray said.

Another hurdle: Because stimulant medication is a controlled substance, most people with ADHD can obtain only a 30-day supply at a time. It also means individual pharmacies can’t share where the drugs are available elsewhere — parents and patients have to contact each location, one by one.

When Linus’ Adderall runs out each month, Howell and her husband divide up a list of 20 pharmacies to call. The process can take hours. It takes even more time to drive to distant pharmacies.

Linus now only takes medication on school days to ration his supply.

“This is very real, and cognitively how he functions is dependent upon this medication being available to him,” Howell said. “It makes us feel like this system is not set up to accommodate people who are neurodivergent.”

It’s difficult to pinpoint a solution. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency closely regulates controlled substances due to a high potential for abuse and addiction, imposing quotas on manufacturers to curb production.

In 2022, manufacturers of amphetamine medications, which includes Adderall, only sold about 70% of their allotted quota, FDA and DEA officials said. That means about a billion doses were never made or shipped.

However, because drug manufacturers are private companies, neither agency can mandate increased production.

“We (DEA and the FDA) have called on manufacturers to confirm they are working to increase production to meet their allotted quota amount,” the agencies said in a joint statement in August.

The FDA told the Tribune that it can’t disclose specific production data because it’s considered confidential commercial information.

“The public should rest assured the FDA is working closely with numerous manufacturers and others in the supply chain to understand, mitigate and prevent or reduce the impact of intermittent or reduced availability of certain products,” FDA spokesperson Chanapa Tantibanchachai said in a statement.

The decreased production is likely also tied to the opioid crisis and the resulting backlash faced by manufacturers, Mattingly said. Many Big Pharma companies and some of the nation’s largest pharmacy chains faced a slew of lawsuits in recent years related to the handling of drugs and their role in the epidemic.

“In the background was the opioid crisis, and I think what happened is a number of the manufacturers, in particular generic manufacturers, became skittish about making short-acting stimulants,” Mattingly said.

Twenty-one-year-old Drew Goodman was diagnosed with ADHD in second grade. He started taking Concerta, another prescription stimulant, about two years later. Without it, he’s unable to manage his time, usually hyperfocusing on a singular activity.

“It’s just near impossible to stop doing whatever I’m doing,” said Goodman, a DePaul University student. “It makes it difficult just for day-to-day life.”

For a decade, he had no issues filling his prescription. Then, in 2021, it was out of stock at his usual pharmacy. It was the beginning of a monthly routine of tedious phone calls. There’s no alternative, he added — he needs his medication.

“It’s genuinely kind of dangerous,” Goodman said. “I’m not exaggerating, especially if I’m driving somewhere, I genuinely need it. It’s dangerous to drive without it.”

Kathryn Gray, a clinical pharmacist at the University of Chicago, is part of a team of physicians dedicated to medication access. A large portion of her work now revolves around locating drugs that treat patients’ ADHD. If the hospital pharmacy doesn’t have medication in stock, she’ll assist with the lengthy process of contacting individual stores.

“It’s been challenging to get adequate supplies of certain medications at any given time of the year,” Gray said.

The back order has also exacerbated health care inequality. Many patients aren’t able to drive to faraway pharmacies. Others have to pay hundreds out of pocket when they switch to an available medication that’s not insured.

“The general trend is most patients are very frustrated, very exhausted trying to deal with all of this,” Gray said.

Most psychiatrists now spend “one hour a day, a few times a week” trying to locate drugs like Adderall for their patients, according to Royce Lee, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Chicago.

“I would say every single one of my patients on Adderall and its derivatives will come across this problem,” Lee said. “It’s a very time-consuming process for everybody.”

It’s an added layer of stress on an already difficult disorder to navigate, said Rebecca Kiel, a Buffalo Grove-based therapist specializing in ADHD. Kiel has seen dozens of patients affected professionally, academically, socially and financially by the shortage.

“You’ve got people who are already struggling,” Kiel said. “Medical professionals prescribe medication as this tool, now take the tool away, and you have people struggling again with this anxiety, panic or worry because they don’t have the thing that they know was helping them.”

The crisis doesn’t appear to be abating soon. Even if Adderall was available, government agencies are wary of rapid influxes of Adderall and other prescription stimulant medications due to drug abuse, experts said.

The FDA added that it’s working to assist manufacturers with increasing production by expediting the review process. Additional supply of Adderall is expected to return in the coming months, the agency said. In October, the DEA also increased the production quota for ADHD medications with methylphenidate, which includes drugs like Concerta.

Physicians can continue to shift ADHD patients’ prescriptions to more readily available medication, though those in turn can experience shortages. Alternative treatment may also be more expensive for patients.

“It really is stressing the health care system,” Lee said. “This isn’t sustainable.”

For now, ADHD patients and parents like Howell must simply hope for the best each month as they scramble to obtain essential medication.

“It just makes me sad, and it gives me horrible anxiety to think about,” Howell said. “It’s just part and parcel of being one of the many parents with family members who have ADHD and can’t find medication.”

Buffy’s Reboot Must Revive Tara

Spike’s Past Is Perfect Reboot Material

While Faith’s life before the series has a lot of potential, there is another antihero whose backstory Buffy the Vampire Slayer viewers never got to know. Spike’s time as a young poet in 1800s London could offer a totally unexpected new setting for the series, uprooting the show from its original California setting and turning the robot into a period piece. This would make the new show feel much less like the original series, discourage negative comparisons as a result, and breathe new life into the franchise.

Buffy’s Reboot Can Borrow Giles’ Unmade Ripper Story

The canceled Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Ripper , a proposed Giles-centric extension of the show's universe, would have seen the character encountering traditional dark ghost stories in his lonely Britain home each week. The new reboot could keep this premise, turning the series into more of an anthology show than a serial. Giles’s role could even potentially be replaced by Buffy herself, with Gellar’s returning character narrating each spooky outing.

How do you add New Teams (Work or School) to the Desktop and Start Menu for all users

I am trying to add the New Teams (Work or School) application to the desktop and start menu for all our employees so I need to be able to do this for all user profiles on a machine. I can do this with the Teams Classic app, but we are wanting to switch over to the New Teams application and I am not able to get it done for all users profiles without opening Run>Shell:AppsFolder> and creating a shortcut to the public desktop. I am looking for a way that this could be done by default or by a script so it could be added to our image to make deployments a bit easier and less room for error.

The evidentiary hearing in Georgia over whether to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has concluded for the time being, a judge said Friday.

The attorneys will likely have to return in the next few weeks to discuss outstanding issues, including whether Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor Willis hired to lead the case, can still assert attorney-client privilege over some testimony and evidence from his former law partner and divorce attorney, Terrence Bradley.

Both defense attorneys and prosecutors also will have the opportunity to file additional legal briefs as they see fit.

The evidentiary hearing included a tumultuous two days of testimony, including from Willis herself. Before the hearing concluded, the district attorney’s office sought to undermine Bradley’s credibility, including by raising an allegation of sexual assault by an employee of his former law firm. Bradley denied the allegation.

Bradley testified earlier Friday that he left the firm following a “disagreement,” but said the details of the disagreement were privileged. During cross examination, Bradley was pressed on whether he left because of a disagreement over a sexual assault allegation made against him.

“That is not correct,” Bradley said, but confirmed that he was accused of sexually assaulting a member of the firm.

The judge presiding over the case, Scott McAfee, questioned whether Bradley had been properly interpreting the privilege he had previously asserted over communications with Wade, given his testimony on the allegation.

Wade’s former lawyer acknowledged reviewing motion to dismiss Willis and said it looked "good"

Defense attorneys have continued to try to get information from Nathan Wade’s former law partner and one-time attorney about Wade’s relationship with District Attorney Fani Willis — specifically over the timing of when their relationship began. 

Terrence Bradley, Wade’s former divorce attorney, has repeatedly asserted attorney-client privilege when asked about information he learned from Wade. The judge presiding over the case has acknowledged the privilege exists and has limited what attorneys can question Bradley about.

Bradley did, however, acknowledge that defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant sent him a copy of her motion to dismiss Willis days before she filed it in January. The filing leveled allegations that Willis and Wade engaged in an improper romantic relationship from which Willis financially benefitted.

“I said, ‘looks good,’” Bradley said of his response via text to Merchant regarding her motion, adding that his answer was based on privileged communication with Wade.

Bradley had split from the law firm where he and Wade were partners, saying it was over a “disagreement.” When pressed on what the disagreement was about, Bradley said it was also privileged information and that “the disagreement is mine to know.”

The hearing has now wrapped up for the day.

Several prominent Georgia Democrats and local political heavyweights have been present in the Fulton County courtroom over the last two days to support District Attorney Fani Willis as she faces potential disqualification in former President Donald Trump's election interference case.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, a Democrat, was sitting close to the front row behind the DA's team Friday morning. “After seeing some of coverage last evening, the Mayor felt compelled to walk over to the Courthouse in a show of solidarity and have a presence there," Dickens’ press secretary said in a statement to CNN. 

At a news conference from City Hall after the hearing took a lunch break, Dickens said, “Women are under attack across this country, and she does not need to feel like she is alone.”

"We know who’s on trial, and it’s not her. It’s Donald Trump for attempting to steal an election," Dickens said. 

Asked if he believes that Willis has the support of Fulton County after her Thursday testimony, Dickens told CNN: “Yes. And certainly the City of Atlanta.”

Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, the first woman to hold the post, and Charlie Bailey, a 2022 candidate for Lt. Governor, also have attended the court proceedings.

African Methodist Episcopal Bishop Reginald Jackson, a spiritual adviser of Willis and head of an historic black church in the Atlanta area, also was seen in court on Friday, as was Gerald Griggs, president of the Georgia NAACP.

Judge limits testimony of prosecutor’s former law partner in Georgia hearing

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee has ruled that defense attorneys in the Georgia election subversion case can’t ask Nathan Wade’s former law partner, Terrence Bradley, about what Wade told him about his relationship with District Attorney Fani Willis.

McAfee said he would go over those conversations with Bradley, the former law partner who also represented Wade in his divorce, in a closed-door hearing without prosecutors or defense lawyers present. 

Defense attorneys had been trying to overcome Bradley’s claims of attorney-client privilege. Ashleigh Merchant, a defense attorney, wanted to introduce into evidence texts she exchanged with Bradley in 2023 about the relationship between Willis and Wade.

At one point, Merchant asked Bradley about a September text in which he declined to help her find someone who could provide a sworn statement about the relationship.

“Did I text you asking you if you knew who I could get an affidavit from about the affair and you responded, ‘No. No one would freely burn that bridge.’”  “Yes, I do see that,” Bradley replied when Merchant showed him the texts.

Bradley testified that he has “no personal knowledge of when” Willis and Wade began their relationship outside of direct communications with Wade.

Analysis: Focus on Georgia prosecutors could help Trump in jury pool

Donald Trump may be winning politically in Georgia this week by shifting attention to the personal lives of prosecutors pursuing the criminal case against him in Fulton County.

But his lawyers have also looked for opportunities like these in the criminal cases he faces to plant the seeds for a legal win later on by damaging prosecutors’ credibility enough to help him before a jury.

Trump has repeatedly tried to claim publicly, including in remarks outside of a Manhattan courtroom Thursday, that he is the victim of a Biden administration conspiracy. Defense teams sometimes aim for these types of smears of prosecutors to help them by seeping into the public consciousness. When it comes time to pick jurors, distrust in the justice system or prosecutors could help Trump if even one selected juror wants to acquit because of feelings the case wasn’t fair.

It’s called jury nullification — and it’s a flaw in the justice system that courts strenuously try to avoid in the courtroom. However, a nullified jury — unwilling to vote based on the facts of the case before them — can pop up sometimes, especially in high-profile or controversial cases.

It still remains to be seen, however, if the most immediate fallout of the Fani Willis and Nathan Wade situation is the top prosecutors’ removal from the Trump case, which could potentially derail a trial indefinitely.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis reemerged in the spotlight last year after her office  charged 19 co-defendants , including Donald Trump, regarding efforts by the former president and his allies to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

She campaigned on the premise of restoring integrity to the Fulton County district attorney’s office, was elected after ousting six-term incumbent Paul Howard and inherited a stack of backlogged cases.

Within a month, her office was firing off letters to Georgia officials asking them to preserve documents related to attempts to influence the state’s 2020 election.

Besides leading the election subversion probe, Willis has also brought anti-corruption indictments against Grammy-winning rapper  Young Thug  and his associates. The district attorney has spoken fondly of RICO – the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act – and has used it in unorthodox ways to bring charges against school officials and musicians, including Young Thug.

From California by way of Washington, DC, Willis obtained her undergraduate degree from Howard University in 1992 and graduated from Emory School of Law in 1996,  according to her biography . Her name, Fani, is Swahili and means “prosperous,” and her father was a lawyer and Black Panther.

According to a  South Atlanta Magazine  profile, she worked in the private sector for five years before becoming assistant district attorney for Fulton County in 2001.

Willis kept location of her home secret due to threats, her father testifies

John Floyd, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' father, testified on Friday that he and his daughter experienced "nightmarish threats" after she was sworn in as district attorney.

Floyd began his testimony by discussing how Willis was forced to move from her home after a group of people harassed her and sent her death threats.

"The South Fulton police brought a man with a dog, because there were so many death threats," he said passionately. "They said they were going to blow up the house, they said they were going to kill her, kill me, kill her grandchildren."

Once Willis moved, she kept the location of her new home secret from her father due to the threats, he testified.

They have seen each other rarely since, only "13 times" since she left her original home, and for no more than three hours each time, due to the danger.

"It's hard for me to talk about," Floyd said. 

Willis' father says he told the district attorney to have "six months of cash always"

John Floyd, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ father, testified Friday that he taught his daughter to “hide cash” in case she needed it.

Defense attorneys had pushed Willis over why she would keep a prevalence of cash in her home, which she said used to pay Nathan Wade back for various expenses. Floyd’s testimony corroborates Willis’ statements that she was taught to always have cash handy.

“Maybe, and excuse me your honor, I’m not trying to be racist, but it’s a black thing,” Floyd said. “I was trained, and most black folks, they hide cash or they keep cash, and I was trained you always keep some cash.”

“I gave my daughter her first cash box and told her, ‘always keep some cash,’” Floyd said.

Floyd referenced a time he had trouble paying for his meal at a restaurant several years ago to Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“I had a American Express credit card and maybe a Visa,” Floyd said, as well as “a lot of what they call traveler’s checks.”

Sheridan Smith says ADHD diagnosis helped her ‘make sense of a lot of things’

Actor and TV personality, 42, said diagnosis helped her understand her ‘brain’s background noise’

Sheridan Smith has spoken about how a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has helped her “make sense of a lot of things” in her life.

The Olivier award-winner, who will star in the musical Opening Night at the Gielgud Theatre next month, told Vogue “I never know what to say and I overthink”, adding that she found herself constantly “overanalysing” little things, such as the “mums’ WhatsApp group” for her son’s school.

She said: “[I’m called] Shadow Sheridan because all I do is lurk.”

ADHD includes symptoms such as being restless, having trouble concentrating, and acting on impulse. Symptoms tend to be noticed at an early age, though they can sometimes be diagnosed in adults.

Smith, 42, said her diagnosis had helped her understand her “brain’s background noise”.

The actor and TV personality’s breakout acting role was as Antony’s girlfriend, Emma, in The Royle Family. She later joined the main cast of the hit comedy Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, and starred in stage productions of Legally Blonde, Little Shop of Horrors and Funny Girl.

In her 2020 documentary Becoming Mum , she opened up about her mental health issues and concerns that they would resurface after the birth of her son, Billy.

Smith will next take on the role of Myrtle in Opening Night , which is based on the 1977 film of the same name. It follows “a theatre company’s preparations to stage a new play on Broadway”, according to the synopsis. “But drama ignites backstage when their leading lady is rocked by tragedy, and her personal turmoil forces everyone to deliver the performances of their lives.”

It is estimated that 2.6 million people in the UK have ADHD, and in recent years an increasing number of public figures have opened up about their experience with the condition. They include the reality TV personality Sam Thompson, who spoke about being diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 30 during his appearance on the latest season of I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here.

“It’s weird nobody really spotted it beforehand at school because if you look at all my report cards, every single one is the same. It says: ‘Likable enough guy but lacks focus.’ It’s like staring you in the face,” Thompson said.

“If I had known as a kid, not much would have changed, but how you feel about yourself probably changes. I remember crying into my textbooks because I was like, I can’t understand the words that are going into my head.”
