35 Place Value Games To Play In Your Classroom

June 1, 2023 //  by  Suzanne Bucknam

Place value can be one of the more challenging, but basic concepts for kids to understand, which is why it’s important to introduce it in order from concrete to abstract – and in a variety of fun ways.

Place value games are games that introduce and/or reinforce a child’s understanding that a digit’s place in a number affects its value. For example, the digit “2” in the number 325 represents 20, not 2.

Playing educational games is the most effective way to help students understand how to arrive at the correct answer. Interactive games are great for reinforcing a child’s knowledge of the place-value concept and hands-on place value activities are great for independent learning.

Here are some fun and creative place value games that will help students enhance their math skills to understand this concept in a meaningful way and make learning place value a less confusing concept.

Kindergarten Math: Place Value

Teaching Place Value is an essential concept for students to understand and master. When students successfully understand place value (the value of digits), they are able to use this skill to compose and decompose numbers. Competency with place value is the foundation for harder concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In order for students to build a concrete understanding of place value, they need hands-on and authentic opportunities to practice this mathematical skill. In Unit 7 of the Math Made Fun Curriculum, the place value activities will allow students to better understand how numbers can be broken apart, put together and rearranged to build a foundation with numbers of 11-19.

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?

I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins , because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me.  However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.

Easy way to organize your classroom math centers!

The Best Place Value Activities

In this blog post, I will share the best activities to teach place value to kindergarten and first-grade students. These activities are hands-on and fun! Students will practice place value using drawings, base ten blocks, and ten frames.

Place value is one of the most critical math units we cover in first grade and kindergarten. The way that we write numbers, add and subtract, and even compare numbers are all based on understanding   place value concepts .

Must-have Place Value item: Base Ten Blocks

These vibrant and colorful base ten blocks are a classroom staple. We use them for developing number sense and place value.

place value activities kindergarten

Providing students with MANY opportunities to explore place value by using drawings, diagrams, or base 10 blocks will help them visualize and make connections!

Understanding place value is not only significant; it can be fun when you incorporate hands-on activities.

Hands-on Learning Activities

During centers, we use engaging hands-on activities to help solidify our learning. Here are three activities that you can use in the classroom.

Place Value Bingo

When we begin learning about place value, one of the first lessons I teach is about tens and ones. We spend a lot of time on vocabulary words such as tens place, ones place, and digits. We play fun games like Place Value Bingo, where they count the ten frames and say how many tens and ones they have. They then cover the amount on their board. The first person to get three in a row wins. This activity will teach students that 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones – called a “ten.”

Place Value Bingo

Roll and Build

Students practice building tens and ones using base ten blocks or quick tens and ones (drawing). What I like about this center is that it’s a board game, and students can play with a partner. They practice social skills like taking turns, talking about math, and other learning behaviors.

Tens and Ones Mat

Tens and Ones Mat can be used for students to represent numbers in more than one way. You can also easily differentiate instruction by extending or limiting the number range. For this activity, students pick a card and build the number. They can use base ten blocks or a drawing. Last, they complete the statement.

Place Value Kindergarten Activities

place value activities kindergarten

Place value is such a critical understanding for young mathematicians – it is a basic building block for future math problems. Place value can be very challenging for young children because it is so abstract. As teachers we need to find ways to help make the abstract concrete. I have previously written about creating deep understanding of place value throughout the year . This post will focus more on the specific activities I do in a place value unit. All of these activities can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store .

Place Value Starts with Teen Numbers

place value activities kindergarten

When working on place value with kindergarteners, we must start with teen numbers. In fact, the math standards on place value for kindergarten only put the focus on understanding that teen numbers can be made up into a group of 10 and ones.

Before children are able to fully understand place value of teen numbers, they must have a solid foundation of number relationships for teen numbers. I love to play hide and seek where the students work to build a number line of teen numbers and then we take turns hiding one number. Students then have to figure out, by looking at the surrounding numbers, which number is missing.

place value activities kindergarten

Ten frames are really helpful for understanding place value of teen numbers, because it so clearly shows a full group of ten and some extras. I love include ten frames in all of my place value games to see the visuals of the tens and ones. For example, I have my students pick a teen number card and then have them fill in the ten frame with that many cubes. I like to include an equation so that students can start to have practice with ten plus how many extra.

I also like to have them draw this out in a teen number book. The book then asks them to write how many groups of tens and how many ones. It’s the introduction to tens and ones in a more concrete and visual way.

Once my students have a chance to build teen numbers on ten frames, I want to help them start quickly subitize a group of ten and the ones. I love to do a “Tell Me Fast” warm up where I quickly show them teen numbers on a ten frame. There is a previous blog post on subitizing if you want to learn more .

place value activities kindergarten

I also like to play the game Cover It and Bingo where students have to see the ten frames to figure out what number they need to cover up. This is a great practice for skip counting groups of tens and then switching to ones.

Place Value Kindergarten Activities

Concrete to Abstract Place Value Understandings

Place value is so tricky for young students because of how abstract it is. We need to find ways to start with the concrete and then expand to the abstract. Starting with teen numbers and ten frames is a great way to do that. Once you are ready to start moving on to larger numbers, you should find lots of different ways for your children to build the numbers.

Place Value Kindergarten Activity Tools

I know growing up and when I taught first grade we use base ten blocks a lot. I really don’t think they are a good tool for students first attempting place value work. Students really need to build the groups of tens themselves before they can understand that the stick of ten cubes is a group of ten. I also don’t like using bundles of popsicle sticks. Yes, the children can be in charge of grouping the popsicle sticks into groups of tens, but once they are in groups it is hard to visually see that it is ten and it can be too abstract to look at the bundle and skip count by tens.

free place value activity

I like to have my students use unifix cubes (or connecting cubes) to count out the number they need. Then they take those cubes and make groups of tens and then whatever is leftover is the ones. They can physically count and see the ten cubes in each stick of ten and the extras. Another way to do this (or to introduce this) is to have students count large quantities of counters and have them make piles of ten. Then they can skip count those tens and the extras. If they want, they can turn those piles into sticks of tens or they can leave them as piles of ten, either way, they are practicing building groups of tens and then counting the extras.

Abstract Place Value Kindergarten Activities

Once they have had lots of practice building groups of tens, then we can move on to the more abstract practice of seeing a number and knowing how many tens and how many ones. I like to use these puzzles for that because children can still count the ten frames to determine what number it is, but there is a connection to the abstract number of tens and ones.

place value activities kindergarten

Place value kindergarten activities offer a critical understanding for young mathematicians, but we cannot expect them to understand this abstract concept without having concrete practice first.

How do you like to give your students concrete place value practice?

Place Value Activities for Kids

In this set of activities adaptable for grades K-3, parents and educators will find ideas for teaching about place value. These activities are designed to complement the BrainPOP Jr.  Place Value  topic page, which includes a movie, quizzes, online games, printable activities, and more.

Classroom Activities for Teaching Place Value

Place Value Bingo Make bingo cards using different numbers. You may want students to make their own bingo cards using one-, two-, or three-digit numbers and then have them swap cards with other students. Then call out different numbers or clues such as “any number with 3 in the ones place” or “any number with no tens.” The first person to get bingo can call out numbers in the next round.

Bean Bag Number Toss

Take 10 separate pieces of paper and label them each from 0 to 9. Then give a student one, two, or three bean bags to throw at different numbers to create a number. For example, if a student throws bags on a 2 and a 3, he or she forms the number 23. Write the number on the board and have students say the number out loud and model the number using manipulatives. Have students take turn throwing bean bags.

Number Clues

Model a number story for your students, such as “There are 7 tens, 1 one, and 9 hundreds.” Then have students write their answers. Divide the students into small groups and have them write or tell each other their own number stories. You may want them to use place value charts to help them solve.

Roll to 100

Students work in pairs to play this collaborative game. They take turns rolling one or two dice and then showing the total of their roll with interlocking cubes or base-ten blocks. They keep rolling and amassing more cubes or blocks and when they have a group of 10 ones, they can swap it for a rod of 10. They can keep track of how many cubes they have by lining them up on or next to a hundred chart. When they have collected 100 cubes they can play again.

Family and Homeschool Activities for Teaching Place Value

Number hunt.

Take a walk with your child around the neighborhood. Look for one-, two-, three-digit numbers and have your child read them out loud. You may want your child to record the numbers that he or she sees. Discuss each number and ask how many ones, tens, or hundreds are in the number. What is the largest number you can find? What is the smallest number?

Write the numbers 0 through 9 on separate index cards or scraps of paper and place them in a hat. Have your child draw one, two, or three cards out of the hat. He or she can make different numbers. For example, if your child pulls the numbers 3, 6, and 9, he or she can make 3, 6, 9, 36, 39, 396, 693, etc. Challenge your child to make as many numbers as possible using the cards. What is the smallest number your child can make? What is the largest number? Help your child compare numbers by looking at the largest place values.

Base Ten Strips

Make your own manipulatives with your child at home. On one-inch graph paper have your child color 20 single boxes and then color 20 strips of 10. Help your child cut out the strips and singles. Then you can keep them in a zip-top bag and use them to make numbers that you pick out of a hat or play other number games with them. Your child can even build his or her own 100 chart by gluing 10 strips of 10 onto a poster board and labeling the numbers.

Each digit holds a different place value, which is determined by its position relative to the decimal point. So, two same digits in different positions within a number have different place values. For example, in the number 212, the place value of the rightmost digit 2 is 2, whereas the place value of the leftmost digit 2 is 200.

The rightmost digit represents the ones place (units place), followed by tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on, as you move left. Each place value is ten times greater than the one to its right. Each digit's place value contributes to the overall value of the number.

What Is the Place Value Chart?

A place value chart is a visual representation of place values of digits within a number. It consists of columns representing different place values, such as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. Each column is labeled with the corresponding place value.

In the International place value system, we have three periods: ones, thousands, and millions, for the nine places from right to left. Each period contains three places.

Note: Each place-value is 10 times the place-value to its immediate right.

What Is the Place Value Chart for Decimals?

If a decimal number has two parts — a whole number part and a fractional part, separated by the decimal point. So, the place value chart of decimals has some extra columns to accommodate the places after the decimal point.

The first section before the decimal point denotes the whole number part, and the section after the decimal point denotes the fractional or decimal part.

Note: Here, the place value of the hundredths place is \(\frac{1}{10}\) times the place value of the tenths place, the place value of the thousandths place is \(\frac{1}{10}\) times the place value of the  hundredths place, and so on.

How To Find Place Values

The place value chart makes it easy to find the place values of a number. The digits of a number are written in the appropriate column, indicating their value based on their position. The chart helps in understanding the magnitude of numbers.

To understand how to calculate place values, we have to understand the pattern followed by the different place values in the place value chart.

Place Values for the Whole Number Part

  • Ones/ Units place: It represents the first digit from the right or the rightmost digit. To find the place value of the digit at the “ones” place, multiply the digit with 1.
  • Tens place: It is the second digit from the right. The digit at the “tens” place denotes the number of “tens” in any number. To find the place value, multiply the digit at the tens place by 10.
  • Hundreds place: It is the third digit from the right. The digit at the “hundreds” place denotes the number of “hundreds” in any number. By multiplying the digit with 100, the place value is determined.

Similarly, as you move further to the left, each place value is 10 times bigger than the place value to its immediate right.

Example: 375 = three hundreds, seven tens, and five ones

Place value of 3 = 300

Place value of 7 = 70

Place value of 5 = 5

Here are some more examples of place values in whole numbers:

Place Values for the Decimal Number Part

  • Tenths place : It is the first place to the right of the decimal point. To find the place value of a digit at the tenths place, multiply the digit with \(\frac{1}{10}\).
  • Hundredths place : It is the second place to the right of the decimal point. To find the place value of a digit at the hundredths place, multiply the digit with \(\frac{1}{100}\).
  • Thousandths place : It is the third place to the right of the decimal point. To find the place value of a digit at the thousandths place, multiply the digit with \(\frac{1}{1000}\).

Similarly, as you move further to the right, each place value is \(\frac{1}{10}\) times bigger than the place value to its immediate left.

Example: Let’s write all the digits of the decimal number 123.456 and their respective place values in the place value chart.

Thus, 123.456 =  100 + 20 + 3 + 0.4 + 0.05 + 0.006

What Is the Expanded Form of Numbers?

Expanded form is a way of representing a number by breaking it down into the sum of its individual place values. Each digit in the number is written separately, multiplied by its corresponding place value, and then summed together.

Examples :

i) 436 = 400 + 30 + 6

ii) 99.64 = 90 +9+0.6+0.04

This representation emphasizes the value of each digit in relation to its place within the number. Expanded form is a useful tool for understanding the composition of numbers and can aid in various mathematical operations such as addition and subtraction.

Playful Learning: Hands-on Tools for Teaching Place Values

1. Counters

Counters are colorful discs with markings that help build upon the basic counting skills learned in kindergarten. These discs, representing unit ones, tens, and hundreds, are used to decompose a number according to its place value, visually representing each digit.

For example, the number 8, 46 and 372 using counters are represented as:

Representation of different numbers using place-value counters/discs

2. Base-ten blocks (base-10 blocks)

Similar to counters, base-10 blocks provide an effective and easy-to-understand introduction to the place-value system. Beginning with the unit block representing "1," these blocks are designed as "tens" and "hundreds" to visually demonstrate the concept of place value.

Example: Observe the given image of different base-10 blocks.

Each orange block represents thousands.

Each green block represents hundreds.

Each blue block represents tens.

Each pink block represents ones.

Leaves Are Falling

  • Number line (with numbers 2” apart) or number squares numbered
  • 1-10 drawn with chalk

Math Objectives that Meet Standards:

Children will:

  • Count by multiples of 1, 2, 5, and 10.
  • Practice one-to-one correspondence.

Tune: Are you Sleeping?

Leaves are falling,

One, two, three,

From the tree.

Four, five, six,

Falling to the ground.

Seven, eight, nine,

Ten leaves falling down,

Covering the ground.

How to Do It

  • This song teaches numeration and number sense. All you need is children and leaves!
  • Bring the children outside. Choose 10 children and ask them to collect one leaf each from the ground. (If no leaves are available, use construction paper cutouts).
  • When the children have their leaves, ask them to put the leaves together in a pile, counting in order as they place them in the pile, so they understand that the pile contains 10 leaves.
  • After making the pile, ask the children to pick up their leaves and stand on one of the numbers on the number line.
  • Ask them to count off, 1-10, so it is clear each child knows the number on which she is standing.

Instructions

l Label one basket "Green" and the other "Orange, Red, Yellow, and Brown." What to Do 1. Talk about the colors of leaves in the fall. 2. Show children the real or paper leaves and ask what they notice about the colors. 3. Tell the children that they are going to make the fall leaves fall! Show them the baskets and explain that after the leaves fall, they are going to sort them by color and place them in the appropriate basket. 4. Put the baskets on opposite sides of the circle. 5. Have children stand around the large cloth and hold onto the edges. Pile the leaves onto the top of the cloth and help the children lift the cloth up and down to toss the leaves into the air. 6. While they are tossing the leaves, ask children to call out colors they see. 7. Say, "When I count to three, we are going to let go of the cloth. When the cloth falls to the ground, collect the leaves one at a time and take them to the basket that matches their color." 8. Count to three and help the children drop the cloth and sort the leaves. 9. When all of the leaves are collected, consider looking through the collected leaves or repeating the activity. Assessment To assess the children's learning, consider the following: l Can each child identify the main colors on three leaves? Can they match the leaves to baskets of the same colors?
