Reading Grade 3 Poetry Worksheets
Related ela standard: rf.3.4.b.
Poetry is fun for kids. The stories energize kids because they are free to write whatever they can dream up and rhyme too. Teachers should always start to expose students to poetry by example. I often read a poem of the day for a month before I even attempt to have students write their own poetry. This way students have a good idea of what a poem is and isn't. From there I have students write poems as a class a few times, before I set them loose on their own. The worksheets you will find below are fun worksheets that engage students in the process of poetry writing.
Grade 3 Poetry Worksheets:
A Riddle Poem – This worksheet displays how poems can have a cadence.
A Comic Poem – This is a really fun poem.
Little Things – We sometimes don't take time to enjoy our day as much as we should.
Patterns in Poems – You got to love a poem about Yo-yoing.
The Land of Counterpane – This is a very creative poem for you to work with.
Strike! – This worksheet tries to demonstrate the pacing of reading poems.
Identifying Feet in Poetry – Read the poem out loud twice. The second time as you read, draw lines between the feet in the lines of the poem, like in the example above.
Parts of a Poem – Then identify each part in the poem below by writing the letter of the correct part on the line.
Cat on a Swing – Write your own brief poem using free verse. Take turns reading your poems out loud to the class.
The Violet – Read the poem out loud. Underline the words or syllables that you stressed in each line.
The Brook – This poem really flows, if you get my drift.
The Limerick – See if you can hear the meter. Circle the poem that is NOT a limerick.
A JUNGLE SONG – As the student reads aloud, mark the text below to indicate miscues.
Bed in Summer – Read the comprehension questions to the student. Indicate whether or not they answered correctly.
The Bedtime BLUES – What does the speaker in the poem want?
What Elementary Students Should Know About Poetry?
Poetry makes up an essential place in English curriculum. It is taught in elementary classes to promote listening, reading and writing capabilities in elementary students. Poetry can be used to express your feelings for any celebration, project, theme and event. Let's delve into finding out more about poetry.
What is Poetry?
A work of poetry is a write-up to express emotions or stir the reader's imagination; it falls in the category of literature or artistic writing piece. The person who writes the poetry is known as the poet. The poet constructs an artistic piece of poetry with carefully arranging and choosing the words as per their meanings, rhythms and sounds.
Poems are of different types which include nursery rhymes as humorous and simple. Others refer to having life lessons or morals. Some may honor God or express to tell a story. Poetry exists in many styles and formats, but the essential elements remain the same which include:
Rhythms are the main purpose of the poetry. The poet uses different patterns of words which produces various effects forming proper rhythm. There are some words or syllabus used in the poetic lines which automatically pose more stress than others.
For instance, "Hedges and Ditches" in these words "Hedge and Ditch" have more stress thus forming rhythm.
Poem also includes two or more words that end with the similar sound. The similar words produce patterns of sounds that rhyme together.
For instance, As high as a kite. Here -"i" sound is repeated to produce similar sound pattern.
As said earlier, poems are of different types. Poems are structured on the basis of sounds, rhythms, length and meter. From categories to actual division, poems are of several types.
For instance, a sonnet which constitute of 14 lines having 10 syllabi each. Sonnet follows the rhythm and rhyme patterns. Whereas, Haiku is popularly known as three lines poetry. It has 5 syllabi in the first and third lines, and 7 syllabi in the second line.

If you’re a teacher or parent looking for printable and digital poetry resources, look no further. TPT has an extensive collection of resources, created by other teachers, that are designed to help with any need across grade levels.
If you want to make poets out of younger students in elementary grades, then acrostic poems or fill in the blank poems are the perfect place to start. (In fact, many poetry resources on TPT include templates so your students can easily get started producing their own poetry, whether it’s a haiku, or limerick.) For older students in middle and high school, you can find an array of resources to teach them about everything from iambic pentameter, figurative language, to famous poets from history. With plenty of TPT resources at your fingertips, you can sharpen your students’ poetry skills in no time.

Teaching students about poetry can be an engaging and creative experience. Here are a few ideas for poetry activities that you can find on TPT to help you introduce and explore the world of poetry with your students:
Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt
Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.
Poetry Analysis Jigsaw
Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.
Poetry Slam or Performance
Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.
Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives
Ask students to write a poem from the perspective of an inanimate object or an animal to foster empathy and encourage creative, out-of-the-box thinking.
Creating Found Poetry
Provide magazines, newspapers, or online articles. Have students cut out interesting words and phrases, and use them to create their own unique poems.
These (and other!) activities can help deepen your students’ appreciation for poetry and enhance their creative writing skills.

Poetry Worksheets
While many students moan over the study of poetry, few realize they listen to it often in the form of music lyrics. Poetry is rhythmic composition that uses imagery and rhythm to express feelings or thoughts. Poems don’t have to rhyme, although many do. Instead, the rhythm of the text is what distinguishes it from prose. The poetry worksheets below are free for you to use in a classroom or at home. The details are viewable by clicking the title.

Poetry is a rich source of figurative language. Though there are examples of figurative language to be found in all genres of literature, perhaps none more than in poetry. Good poets pack worlds of meaning into tiny little lines. These lines evoke emotions, thoughts, and at times social change. One of the ways that poets perform these linguistic miracles is with the use of figurative language. This page contains a selection of poems that I find to be rich with figurative language .
Each poem also includes a sampling of comprehension, inference, review, and discussion questions, so that they are ready for classroom use. Learn more about how I study figurative language in the classroom with my figurative language lesson and unit plans .

I am very grateful that this resource is here and free. Whenever I become stuck, wondering what direction I might take, I look at your sheets and see things which either fit the bill or inspire me to try something new. So few teachers have money to spend on the very things we need to improve. Your help is gratefully appreciated.
Mr. Morton, Thank you for such a wonderful and resourceful site. I have used your materials for a number of years, and my students always do well on their state tests.
You offer such a wide variety and large number of activities on the same topic that I am able to use many as instructional and practice materials and still have several worksheets or activities to use as review just prior to the spring tests.
I hope you know how much you are appreciated! I just can’t say enough good things about you and this site.
