Phonics: Consonant Digraphs (ch, th, sh, and wh)

A consonant digraph, also known as a consonant phoneme, is a pair of consonants that make a single sound. Ch , th , sh , and wh are the most common consonant digraphs.

This page has links to our sections with phonics digraph worksheets.

Help your students learn to read and write words with the wh digraph. Words include which, whale, white, whistle, and wheel.

This page contains worksheets, card games, and learning centers for teaching students about words that end in consonant digraph ck .

th Digraph Worksheets for Kindergartners

posted on February 14, 2019

Kids learn th phonics in Kindergarten. Typically, kids learn short vowels first:

a_ as in apple

e_ as in elephant

i_ as in igloo

o_ as in octopus

u_ as in up

Then, kids move on to learn consonant digraphs. Reading Elephant books introduces consonant digraphs in the following order:

sh as in wish

th as in bath

th as in then

ch as in chop

_tch as in batch

_ck as in deck

_ing as in king

_ng as in long

_ang as in sang

wh_ as in when

FREE th digraph worksheets

By mid-Kindergarten, kids can read words like bath, math, then…etc. Notice how the middle vowel is short. First kids master short vowel th words like math before learning long vowel th words like wreath . For the FREE th digraph worksheets, click the following links. The first th worksheet includes the flight path of a bird. Kids can follow the path, color each word, and practice th phonics.

th Worksheet

Next, check out our free th book called Math in the Bath .

Voiced and voiceless th

th makes 2 sounds: th as in bath and th as in then . The th as in bath is voiceless: you don’t use your voice. You simply breathe out. The th in then is voiced: you use your voice. Place your hand near your voice box. Say each sound. Notice how your throat vibrates for the voiced th sound. Do this activity with your students who struggle. That way, they can distinguish between the 2 th sounds.

th words for Kindergarten

Since Reading Elephant uses systematic phonics instruction , there are only so many words I advocate using in those first th lessons. For example, kids have not learned ir yet, so don’t use words like third in your lesson. There are many words that are off limits for early th lessons. To get started, here is a list of th words that only contain short vowels: bath, path, math, hath, Seth, Beth, moth, thick, thin . Here are some voiced th words that only contain short vowels: that, then, them, this .

I hope your student enjoys the th digraph worksheets!

  • Phonics derives from the Greek word “phono”, which means sound or voice. Therefore, phonics is teaching students about the relationship between the sound of a letter (also known as a phoneme), and the letter or groups of letters  of a written language that represent it (these are called graphemes).
  • Phonics can be taught by learning individual sounds and their corresponding letters, or by learning the sounds of groups of letters.
  • Learning groups of letters involves rimes (which are vowel and consonant pairs like “at” or “ed”), and consonant clusters, which are pairs of consonants like “bl” or “sh”.
  • Once these groups are established, syllables, or groups of groups can be taught to blend, such as ch + op = chop

Phonics TH Worksheets

This phonics pack forms part of a larger series on the English language and encompasses the Roman alphabet letters TH . When using this worksheet pack , students will be able to match the sounds with individual letters or groups of letters.

Voiced TH Reading Paragraphs

Mother's day gifts.

It was Mother's day. I did not have a gift for my mother. Neither did my brother. So we went to my father and asked him if he would take us to the store to look for a gift. He said he hadn't bothered to get one yet either so we all went in the car together.

The weather was bad and the smog in the city made it hard to breathe. But in the end our trip was worth it because we found the most perfect gifts for mother.

There were some salts to help you bathe, some lotion for smooth skin, and some feather pillows to help you relax. All of those sounded very soothing to me.

My brother found some rubber, squishy toys. I told him they were for babies who are teething.

My father found a lathe and a leather belt for mother. I told him that she would absolutely loathe them. They trusted me and put their gifts back. They helped me buy the soothing gifts I found and we drove home together.

I was happy because my mother was going to love them much better than the gifts my father and brother had chosen. And I learned something. People often pick out what they want for themselves instead of thinking of what the other person would want. Don't you think that's silly?

Teething Baby

Look at that! I said to my mother. I pointed at my baby brother's mouth. It was red and I could see something tiny and white poking up.

"That is a tooth," my mother replied. "He is teething. Those are called his gums and that little white part is the top of his tooth. Poor guy. Babies don't feel good when they teethe."

My brother started crying. His nose was runny and it made it hard for him to breathe. His eyes were watery and not shiny blue like usual. I felt bad for him. I could tell that he did not feel well and those teeth coming up were worse than having a cold.

My mother and I worked together to help him feel better. We bathed him and clothed him. Then we wrapped him in his favorite blanket which he loved more than anything else. It seemed to soothe him for a little while, but then he started crying again. Poor guy.

"This is going to be a very long day!" sighed mother. "It will be so good when your father gets home!"

I am an Artist

It was time for the art show. My art was on display over by the back door. It was bigger than all the others so it had to be in back. Otherwise, you couldn't see the others' artwork. That was okay though because I loved my art.

It had feathers all over it. They were painted larger than life and each had its own pattern. There were many colors from gold to silver to fuchsia to violet. The patterns ranged from dots to stripes to stars to crazy splatters. Some looked smooth. Others looked rough. They all looked good together. I could never tell which one of them was my favorite. All that I knew was every time I looked at that beautiful painting, I couldn't breathe.

My father, mother, and brother said so too. I knew these were the days that were going to make me who I am. I am an artist!

This list of functional words was professionally selected to be the most useful for a child or adult who has difficulty with producing the "Voiced TH" sound.

We encourage you to use this list when practicing at home.

Doing home practice will help your child make much faster progress toward correct production.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are only able to see students/clients 30-60 mins (or less) per week.

This is not enough time  for your child to overcome an articulation disorder with the "Voiced TH" sound. But with high caseloads...

...it's all SLPs can do.

There's  only so much time  in the day.

Every day that your child goes without practice  it becomes more and more difficult  to correct an "Voiced TH" error because he/she continues to say it incorrectly.

Practice 5-10 minutes whenever you can, but try to do it on a consistent basis (daily).

Please, please, please use this list to practice.

It will be a great benefit to you and your loved one's progress.

How to teach Reading Comprehension

Using this Thelma and Theo TH Phonics Reading Comprehension Worksheet, students build their reading comprehension and phonics skills while reading words featuring TH.

Your students need lots of practice reading words that have beginning and ending blends in them. This worksheet gives your students practice reading words that focus on the TH blend.

First, students read the questions. Then, read the passage. As you read, underline or circle key words or phrases in the passage that are key details. After reading, use the passage to help you find the answers to aligned questions.

Other resources to use with this Thelma and Theo TH Phonics Reading Comprehension Worksheet

If your students are using this worksheet, they are probably learning about blends.

Check out this Blends, Digraphs, and Trigraphs Activity as an additional resource for your students.

Introduce this worksheet by having students share words that they know that have TH in them. Next, review different reading strategies that students should use as they read (marking the text, reading questions first, etc). Then, have students work independently or with a partner to use the passage to find the answers to aligned questions. After reading, have students share answers to the questions and provide supporting using details from the text.
