What's the Status of Remote Jobs in the UK?
Did you know that at least 56% of companies offer remote work?
From that number, an impressive 16% of those companies are set up to be fully remote with no headquarters, allowing staff to work from home, a coffee shop, a coworking space, an exotic beach, or wherever else they may feel most productive. Wherever there is wifi, remote workers are able to put in their office hours without ever needing to set foot in an office.
The remaining 40% of companies that offer remote work are actually hybrid companies, which means they hire for both in-office and remote positions. Some companies even allow their employees to freely switch between working remotely and coming in to the office. More and more companies are seeing the rising trend of remote workers, and are altering company structure to accommodate for this changing work environment.
How Popular Is Remote Work Across the UK?
In 2012, 4.2 million people in the UK worked from home, either full- or part-time. In 2018, 4.4% of the entire workforce in the UK, from ages 15-64, was working remotely. Remote work is becoming increasingly popular year after year, and it is easy to understand why.
Staff members are happier with the increased freedom to set their own schedule and maintain a work life balance, not to mention the cost and time savings from eliminating the daily commute. Surprisingly, a work-life balance is not the main reason people choose to work remotely. Productivity is the most popular reason people choose remote work. Happy employees are more productive and efficient about their work, as they can choose the best hours and environment for their work styles. The popularity of remote work is increasing so quickly, that half of the UK workforce is expected to work remotely by 2020.
Why do UK companies prefer to hire remotely?
Companies benefit from hiring remotely by having team members who work efficiently, because workers can choose their most productive hours. Hiring remotely gives companies a better chance of hiring the best candidate for the job, not simply the best in the area near the office. Remote workers have a much bigger talent pool to choose from.
Overhead costs for the company are also much lower due to less office space and office equipment being required. Productive and happy staff members and lowered costs make hiring remotely a smart business move for companies to consider. The higher morale leads to significantly improved staff retention, decreasing the need to spend time and funding on constant hiring and onboarding efforts.
From small startup companies to huge enterprises, there are many companies across the UK that are fully remote or are offering remote positions. Whether you are seeking remote work in marketing, education, IT, sales, app development, or something else, there are a lot of UK companies currently looking to hire remote workers. Have a look through the list below for some of the best remote-based UK companies. Happy job hunting!

3 in-demand freelance jobs that you can do from home—one can pay $500 for a few hours of work
More Americans are experimenting with freelancing, either as a side hustle or a full-time career.
The number of professionals freelancing in the U.S. hit an all-time high in 2023, increasing to 64 million people, or 38% of the U.S. workforce, from 60 million the year earlier, according to recent research from Upwork.
Businesses are increasingly relying on freelancers to save on headcount and real estate expenses, Yoav Hornung, head of verticals and innovation at Fiverr, tells CNBC Make It .
But the services businesses are hiring independent contractors for are constantly changing, Hornung says. For example: In recent months, Fiverr has seen a marked increase in requests for AI professionals, including video editors and prompt engineers, who can help businesses leverage AI technologies to be more efficient or profitable.
In addition to AI services, here are three of the most in-demand freelance services for 2024, according to Fiverr , including what professionals on the platform are charging for them. All of these gigs can be done from home and pay over $100 per project:
Video editing
Video editors work in post-production, assembling raw footage into finished packages using different software applications. Two kinds of video editing have seen "huge demand" as of late, according to Hornung: AI video editing and social media video editing.
Between January and July 2023, searches for AI video editors increased by more than 625% on Fiverr. These creators leverage AI to customize video backgrounds, generate voiceovers and enhance audio and visual elements, among other services.
Video editing for short-form content is another in-demand skill. "The increasing popularity of 'snackable' content in the form of Reels, Shorts and TikTok has spiked demand for freelancers who can make snappy, engaging content for brands," Hornung says.
Video editors on Fiverr typically charge at least $100 per project.
Social media management and content creation
Social media managers and specialists develop, edit and promote content across different channels for a client or organization to engage with and grow their audience.
The value of a strong online presence for brands and businesses has "never been higher," says Hornung, as more people — especially younger consumers — shop on social media platforms.
One skill that will be "especially valuable" for freelance social media managers to possess in 2024, he adds, is the ability to create content that feels "authentic and genuine" for clients as more consumers demand authenticity and transparency from the brands they support.
Social media managers and specialists charge at least $150 per project.
Mobile app development
Mobile app developers are software engineers who create apps for smartphones, tablets, computers and other devices. These professionals typically work alongside graphic designers and data scientists.
Globally, people recorded nearly 77 billion mobile app downloads during the first half of 2023, up 3% from 2022, according to data.ai , a data analytics tool.
Hornung points out that, on Fiverr, searches for "app development" have seen a consistent increase since the start of 2023. He explains that more brands are adopting mobile-first strategies to meet consumers' growing preference for interacting with businesses through their phones versus computers or in person.
Mobile app developers charge at least $500 per project.
If you're considering a freelance career or side hustle in any of these fields, it's not enough to learn the technical skills you'll need to do the job — what sets the most successful freelancers apart, says Hornung, is their soft skills and endorsements.
"Trust is king," he says. "Investing in soft skills such as communication and organization, and proof of how you've used these skills, can go a long way in establishing trust between freelance professionals and their clientele base."
Clarification: This story has been updated to reflect project-based payments for each freelance role.

The risk of working from home
If you want to dodge the next round of layoffs, head into the office.
Employers and employees have spent the past few years engaged in an arm-wrestling match of sorts over the return to offices. For a while, the odds were in workers’ favor. A white-hot labor market gave workers a lot of leverage, including the ability to dictate their own work-from-home schedule. The tides, however, are shifting. Employers are clawing back power , and some companies are using that power to compel workers back to their desks — or face some consequences.
If your company is doing layoffs , whether you work from home is probably not going to be the sole factor in deciding whether you get cut. But many large companies that have recently let people go have made it known that employees who, in the eyes of the higher-ups, exist mostly as faceless beings on a computer screen have a greater chance of getting a pink slip. The risk is a frustrating, if foreseeable, one for workers: out of sight, out of mind, out the door.
Executives at the online furniture retailer Wayfair told its staff in January that remote workers were likelier to be hit in its latest round of job cuts. IBM similarly warned its US managers they needed to start reporting to the office at least three days a week or leave. This month, Snap said its layoffs were meant to, in part, “promote in-person collaboration,” and Reuters reported the tech company’s cuts seemed to affect remote workers more than officegoers. Dell is telling workers it looks forward to seeing them around more, too.
This isn’t a brand-new development — big names, from Google to Amazon to Goldman Sachs , have been ratcheting up the return-to-office pressure for months. But we're in a moment where headlines about high-profile layoffs are basically a daily occurrence. Add in long-term trends, like the decline in loyalty between employers and employees , and it's no wonder remote workers feel anxious about cuts.
“It’s not too surprising,” Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the Wharton School who has never been a big fan of remote work, said. “We might say it’s not fair, and they could both be true. There are lots of things that aren’t fair that nevertheless are predictable.”
There isn’t an extensive amount of research on whether working from home hugely increases the risk of layoffs, but it’s “quite possible” that’s the case, Nick Bloom, a Stanford economist and expert on remote work, said. It makes sense, given the research that is out there — and human nature. “Proximity bias is alive and well,” Bloom said. He pointed to a pair of experiments he ran on remote work and promotions. They found that working from home two days a week had no impact on promotion rates, but working from home four days a week halved them.
We might say it’s not fair, and they could both be true. There are lots of things that aren’t fair that nevertheless are predictable.
Emily Dickens, the head of public affairs at the Society for Human Resource Management, told me her research found that 42% of supervisors forgot about employees working remotely when assigning tasks, and nearly three-quarters said they preferred their direct reports to be in the office. “That is something remote workers should be thinking about as they’re engaging with supervisors,” she said. Remote workers aren’t doomed to the unemployment line, but they may want to try a little extra to get noticed. “Knowing is half the battle that you probably have to do some more work proactively to make sure that you remain top of mind,” she said.
It’s fair to note that these risks probably won’t dramatically shift the nature of the US job market. The remote-work phenomenon mainly applies to white-collar workers, and even a small proportion of that group remains fully remote. Stanford’s work-from-home survey found that 12% of full-time employees were fully remote by fall 2023, while 58% were full time on-site and 30% were hybrid. Office occupancy rates have been ticking up . “A large chunk of companies have found a decent rhythm,” Prithwiraj Choudhury, a Harvard Business School professor who specializes in the future of work, said.
But even if the macroeconomic implications of remote workers’ precarity are muted, debate around working from home can be a heated one, with factions dug in on both sides. The state of work is still in flux as the country gets to whatever a “new normal” is in the wake of the pandemic. Employers and employees are working out what the reasonable expectations are, what’s going to revert to how it was, and what is forever changed. Making matters worse is that the data on productivity and working from home is a choose-your-own-adventure situation , and a lot depends on how workplaces approach the issue. Working from home can make life much better for many workers; for some, it makes it worse. Employers that insist workers come back to the office may lose valuable talent if that talent can go elsewhere, meaning the risk here is two-sided.
Workers at all levels over the course of history had lots of ideas about how their jobs could be made easier and more productive and more pleasant. And many of those ideas are valid, but many of them are unrealistic.
Through the lens of layoffs, questions of what the most correct, impartial system is for figuring out whom to let go aren’t always central to the discussion. It would be great if layoff decisions were only ever based on quantitative metrics, but they often aren’t. It would be wonderful if everything at work were fair and equitable and everyone got the same perks; this is not reality.
“Workers at all levels over the course of history had lots of ideas about how their jobs could be made easier and more productive and more pleasant. And many of those ideas are valid, but many of them are unrealistic,” Joseph Fuller, a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School, said. Many workers have a point that they can work from home fine. That doesn’t mean that their boss will or even should go for it, or that it won’t play a role when staffing decisions are made down the line.
There’s no surefire way to make sure that if and when the time for layoffs comes, you won’t be on the chopping block. (But if you have discovered a way, let me know.) Staff cuts often seem like they’re done with little rhyme or reason, but it may not be a bad idea to put in a little face time now and then with the decision-makers — maybe they’ll at least feel a little pang of guilt as they cross your name off the staff list.

UK care firm charged workers from Africa thousands more than cost of visa
Zimbabweans say they paid large sums to Gloriavd Health Care but got far less work than expected and were squalidly housed
A care company serving NHS patients has been charging migrant workers from Africa thousands of pounds to work in the UK when the cost of a visa is only a few hundred pounds, the Guardian has learned.
Care workers from Zimbabwe were told to pay the sums to Gloriavd Health Care Ltd in return for arranging social care jobs in and around Leeds and Bath.
They also claimed they were given far less paid work than they had been led to expect, were housed in overcrowded rooms and faced a threat that their conduct could be reported to the Home Office, leading them to fear deportation if they complained.
One woman alleged she sold her home in rural South Africa to pay £6,500 in fees to the company operated by Gloria Van Dunem only to find she and her colleagues had so little work they had to rely on food banks.
“She took all that I had,” said Winnet Mushaninga, 40, a qualified care worker from Zimbabwe who has been living near Durban. “The trauma and suffering was too much. We paid a lot of money. It’s just painful.”
The allegations come after the Home Office added care workers to the UK’s shortage occupation list in 2022 to help fill 165,000 vacancies in care homes and domiciliary care. There has been rising concern about the exploitation of the immigration route by some social care and employment agencies.
Mushaninga told the Guardian she was recruited directly from Africa by Gloriavd and understood the fee would cover the cost of the visa and the certificate of sponsorship as well as two months’ accommodation and access to a full-time job. The Guardian has seen evidence of bank transfers on her behalf to the company’s bank account totalling £5,500.
But on arrival in Britain last April, Mushaninga alleged she had to live squeezed four to a room with mattresses on the floor, earned just £20 a day, and ended up feeding herself from a church food bank.
The Home Office charges no more than £551 for a visa for care workers and the cost of a sponsor licence for a small company to bring in foreign care workers is £536.
Gloriavd Health Care Ltd was set up by Gloria Van Dunem in 2020 and is registered with the Care Quality Commission, which rates it as “requires improvement”. The NHS Integrated Care Board in Leeds said it has awarded the firm two consecutive contracts making it an approved provider to deliver care in people’s homes.
Mushaninga is among several care workers in Yorkshire being supported by the Leeds branch of Acorn, a community union that is running a Carers Fight Back campaign “not only to win back justice, compensation and job security for our members that have worked for Gloriavd, but for every worker across the UK that is experiencing this injustice,” said Rohan Prasad-Weitz, branch secretary.
Van Dunem’s lawyer told the Guardian “she did not accept money from care workers in exchange for facilitating their relocation to the UK”.
“No money was taken by our client for the immigration skill charge and for assigning certificates of sponsorship from the employees,” the lawyer said, adding they had seen evidence that the matters put to their client were “wholly inaccurate” and lacked “any basis in truth”.
In correspondence seen by the Guardian, Van Dunem apparently told another worker she needed to pay £2,900 and she required no less than half of that “before we would be able to issue the sponsorship visa, the official job offer and all other supporting documentation”.
An offer of employment letter from Van Dunem, also seen by the Guardian, said “you will be working 39.0 a week and salary will be £20,480 gross per annum … Accommodation and maintenance will be provided”.
Mushaninga alleged that on arrival, she found she was only allocated two hours of paid work a day over four 30-minute visits spread out from 7am to 8.30pm – no more than £100 a week.
She claims that she and her fellow care workers would wait for hours for their next appointments in parks and bus stations.
On occasion they got soaked in the rain. They didn’t have a car so travelled by bus between appointments. “We ended up going to food banks”.
Shelly Roe, the granddaughter of another client, told the Guardian “there were quite a few red flags” about the care workers the agency sent out to her grandfather’s home in a Leeds suburb.
“They were walking,” she recalled. “They said they had driving licences but they didn’t drive. They were catching buses. But they were polite, well-trusted and very good.”
Mushaninga said she challenged Van Dunem about the quality of the accommodation saying it was not appropriate for adult living. But “she would say: ‘I will just call the Home Office and they will deport you back home.’ She knew I had nowhere to stay back home, so she knew I would keep quiet.”
A WhatsApp message to workers from Van Dunem’s number seen by the Guardian stated: “As per Monday, Gloriavd will be starting reporting to the home office every activity for all workers. I will [be] reporting shift cancel, working for another company …holidays, absence, not attending training, company trying to reach out for work not responding, refusing to assign documents such as tenancy agreements”.
The range of issues appears to extend beyond what the Home Office tells visa sponsors they need to report. Guidance lists reporting duties including when a worker is absent without permission for more than 10 consecutive working days or is absent without pay or on reduced pay for more than four weeks in a year. It says the Home Office does not need to know if a sponsored worker temporarily leaves the UK, for example, on holiday.
Van Dunem’s lawyer said: “Our client being a sponsor licensee has record-keeping and reporting duties,” and “matters such as working for another company, holidays, absences, and unauthorised absences are within the purview of reporting duties under certain circumstances.”
“In some instances, employers may report their sponsored migrant’s circumstances to the Home Office as part of best practice,” the lawyer said and that “should not be construed as a threat of deportation”.
Another Zimbabwean, Benedict Musavengan, 36, told the Guardian he came to work for Gloriavd in January 2023 after paying £1,700 in fees. He said he was assigned only a few hours and was accommodated four to a room in a flat above a takeaway in Beeston, which didn’t have heating.
He was not able to provide documentary evidence for his claims, but said: “It was so, so cold. There was no cooking stove. There was no washing machine. There was no work for us.”
“The way she treated me hurt me a lot,” he said. “It put me in a bad place. My family was expecting me to send something to them. I have a wife and kids … My hope was to work for five years, create something back home so I could sustain myself and my family.”

Google’s Gemini is now in everything. Here’s how you can try it out.
Gmail, Docs, and more will now come with Gemini baked in. But Europeans will have to wait before they can download the app.
- Will Douglas Heaven archive page
In the biggest mass-market AI launch yet, Google is rolling out Gemini , its family of large language models, across almost all its products, from Android to the iOS Google app to Gmail to Docs and more. You can also now get your hands on Gemini Ultra, the most powerful version of the model, for the first time.
With this launch, Google is sunsetting Bard , the company's answer to ChatGPT. Bard, which has been powered by a version of Gemini since December, will now be known as Gemini too.
ChatGPT , released by Microsoft-backed OpenAI just 14 months ago, changed people’s expectations of what computers could do. Google, which has been racing to catch up ever since, unveiled its Gemini family of models in December. They are multimodal large language models that can interact with you via voice, image, and text. Google claimed that its own benchmarking showed that Gemini could outperform OpenAI's multimodal model, GPT-4, on a range of standard tests. But the margins were slim.
By baking Gemini into its ubiquitous products, Google is hoping to make up lost ground. “Every launch is big, but this one is the biggest yet,” Sissie Hsiao, Google vice president and general manager of Google Assistant and Bard (now Gemini), said in a press conference yesterday. “We think this is one of the most profound ways that we’re going to advance our company’s mission.”
But some will have to wait longer than others to play with Google’s new toys. The company has announced rollouts in the US and East Asia but said nothing about when the Android and iOS apps will come to the UK or the rest of Europe. This may be because the company is waiting for the EU’s new AI Act to be set in stone, says Dragoș Tudorache, a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament, who was a key negotiator on the law.
“We’re working with local regulators to make sure that we’re abiding by local regime requirements before we can expand,” Hsiao said. “Rest assured, we are absolutely working on it and I hope we’ll be able to announce expansion very, very soon.”
How can you get it? Gemini Pro, Google’s middle-tier model that has been available via Bard since December, will continue to be available for free on the web at gemini.google.com (rather than bard.google.com). But now there is a mobile app as well.
If you have an Android device, you can either download the Gemini app or opt in to an upgrade in Google Assistant. This will let you call up Gemini in the same way that you use Google Assistant: by pressing the power button, swiping from the corner of the screen, or saying “Hey, Google!” iOS users can download the Google app, which will now include Gemini.
Gemini will pop up as an overlay on your screen, where you can ask it questions or give it instructions about whatever’s on your phone at the time, such as summarizing an article or generating a caption for a photo.
Finally, Google is launching a paid-for service called Gemini Advanced. This comes bundled in a subscription costing $19.99 a month that the company is calling the Google One Premium AI Plan. It combines the perks of the existing Google One Premium Plan, such as 2TB of extra storage, with access to Google's most powerful model, Gemini Ultra, for the first time. This will compete with OpenAI’s paid-for service, ChatGPT Plus, which buys you access to the more powerful GPT-4 (rather than the default GPT-3.5) for $20 a month.
At some point soon (Google didn't say exactly when) this subscription will also unlock Gemini across Google’s Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, where it works as a smart assistant similar to the GPT-4-powered Copilot that Microsoft is trialing in Office 365.
When can you get it? The free Gemini app (powered by Gemini Pro) is available from today in English in the US. Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it across the Asia Pacific region in English and in Japanese and Korean. But there is no word on when the app will come to the UK, countries in the EU, or Switzerland.
Gemini Advanced (the paid-for service that gives access to Gemini Ultra) is available in English in more than 150 countries, including the UK and EU (but not France). Google says it is analyzing local requirements and fine-tuning Gemini for cultural nuance in different countries. But the company promises that more languages and regions are coming.
What can you do with it? Google says it has developed its Gemini products with the help of more than 100 testers and power users. At the press conference yesterday, Google execs outlined a handful of use cases, such as getting Gemini to help write a cover letter for a job application. “This can help you come across as more professional and increase your relevance to recruiters,” said Google’s vice president for product management, Kristina Behr.
Or you could take a picture of your flat tire and ask Gemini how to fix it. A more elaborate example involved Gemini managing a snack rota for the parents of kids on a soccer team. Gemini would come up with a schedule for who should bring snacks and when, help you email other parents, and then field their replies. In future versions, Gemini will be able to draw on data in your Google Drive that could help manage carpooling around game schedules, Behr said.
But we should expect people to come up with a lot more uses themselves. “I’m really excited to see how people around the world are going to push the envelope on this AI,” Hsaio said.
Is it safe? Google has been working hard to make sure its products are safe to use. But no amount of testing can anticipate all the ways that tech will get used and misused once it is released. In the last few months, Meta saw people use its image-making app to produce pictures of Mickey Mouse with guns and SpongeBob SquarePants flying a jet into two towers. Others used Microsoft’s image-making software to create fake pornographic images of Taylor Swift .
The AI Act aims to mitigate some—but not all—of these problems. For example, it requires the makers of powerful AI like Gemini to build in safeguards, such as watermarking for generated images and steps to avoid reproducing copyrighted material. Google says that all images generated by its products will include its SynthID watermarks.
Like most companies, Google was knocked onto the back foot when ChatGPT arrived. Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI has given it a boost over its old rival. But with Gemini, Google has come back strong: this is the slickest packaging of this generation’s tech yet.
